Shelina's magical journey across Bali and Lombok highlights the joys of travelling with little adventurers. We also follow Chantal as she heads to her roots in Jamaica and discovers the country on a very special retreat.

This architectural work of art is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tonnes.

The mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.

Thailand raises the halal bar Thailand has been ranked the second most Muslimfriendly travel destination among destinations under the non-Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Mastercard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2018, which covers 130 destinations, saw Malaysia retain the premier spot in the overall rankings (including both OIC and non-OIC nations) while Indonesia's year-onyear growth saw it move up to joint second with the United Arab Emirates. Among non-OIC destinations, Thailand retained its second position behind Singapore as the most Muslim-friendly destination for travellers.

Japan and Taiwan surged into the top five for the first time since the GMTI was released. "We are now starting to see the impact of investment and commitment by destinations across the world into the Muslim travel market which is reaping rewards including a real shift in the rankings" said Fazal Bahardeen, chief executive officer of Crescent Rating & HalalTrip.

DISCOVER YOUR BALI One of the hardest parts of traveling with kids – especially as a previously hardened independent traveller - is finding time to organise the trips, choose the hotels, make sure we do the right activities. So on this trip I tried out something new: curated travel.

I opened the french doors of our bedroom and dipped my toe into the pool right outside. Our villa was perched at the very top of the cliffs, and sunlight was rising across the crashing waves below. It was the perfect honeymoon moment, in the perfect paradise destination of Bali. Until my two year old raced into the room clutching her arm bands, followed by the six year old already in her swimsuit at 7am.

“So much for rekindling romance” I laughed to my husband who was standing beside me holding my hand.

So on this trip I tried out something new: curated travel. I’d always thought that was for people who didn’t really care about travel.

In between work meetings and conference calls, I’d picked up the phone to call Nabeel, who runs such a service, and which is growing rapidly in size as more and more people want expert guidance in wading through the vast amount of travel choice. Fifteen minutes later he knew our dates, what we love to do and our constraints – beautiful scenery, good food and a touch of the unexpected, but all adventures must be suitable for two small children.

From that moment on, I had no worries. We were picked up, sent guides and chaperoned to lovely restaurants.

We were given an app to manage our itinerary and online chat for any questions we had. It turned out to be the trip I didn’t know I could have, without any of the stress.

The kids had never seen a volcano before, so our first day trip was to see Mount Kintamani.

Although the distances across Bali look small on the map, the long narrow single file roads take much longer to traverse than expected.

Many of Bali’s tourist destinations lie in the centre or northern half of the island. It’s therefore worth planning a two centre trip to save on multiple commutes, with your first half in the centre of the island for adventure and your second on one of the beach resorts.

Kintamani is just one of the volcanoes on Bali.

“Do you think it will explode?” asked my daughter. It’s a reasonable question; until last month the larger Mount Agung was active and travel into Bali was deemed unsafe. With the restrictions now lifted, it’s the perfect time to visit.

In fact, the Indonesian government has been doing a huge amount to increase tourism to the island with campaigns aimed specifically at the Middle East. Last year King Salman of Saudi Arabi brought his entourage as a way of generating PR.

On our return from Kintamani, we got stuck in traffic on the narrow lanes. The children fidgeted. And then, like an ephemera, a long parade passed our car and we wound down the windows, letting out the cool air conditioned air and letting in the local culture and experience that I’d been craving. We were in the midst of Kuningan day, when the spirits of the ancestors are believed to return to heaven after the Galungan celebrations. It’s a festival unique to Bali that takes place every 210 days.

People carried trays of offerings, the children were dressed up and traditional yellow fabric festooned the decorations. The six year old grabbed her pink kid’s camera and started filming the extraordinary procession. She still makes me watch the video clip now we’re home.

The next day we visited the Cegakin Rice fields, perhaps one of the most iconic spots in Bali. The mountains are cut away with curved terraces of bright green. The kids climbed the huge steps despite the humidity, their cheeks bright red from the heat, but even the two year old demanded to keep climbing until we reached the peak.

During our remaining days in Bali, we bypassed the visit to the tourist beach of Nusa Dua, skipped over the zoo and the whitewater rapids. Older children might enjoy the Monkey Forest, but I wasn’t taking any chances for a face off between my two year old and one of the cheeky creatures that are well known for jumping on top of people, stealing their possessions and occasionally inflicting damage.

Instead we visited Tanah Lot temple, where the black sand beach offsets the sparkling sea, and allowed the littles ones to squelch about. We also saw Uluwatu temple on the southern most tip of the island. The temples themselves are a disappointment. There’s little by way of architecture and history. For those, you need to visit Yogyakarta’s Borobudur and Prambanan. But the views, oh the views. And the sunset colours.

The secret to Bali is its neighbouring island of Lombok, a short half an hour flight away, or a boat ride if you’re feeling adventurous. Local women in coloured headscarves zoomed past on motorcycles. The roads change from wide carriageways to dusty tracks. The mosques punctuate the fields with unexpected cone shaped domes. Instead of the common day trip to Gill Trawangan, our guides took us instead to the islands in the south west. Tumbling out of the car after an hour’s drive south along the coast, the children were fitted for flip flops and snorkelling masks. We were then shepherded onto a long thin traditional fishing boat which raced across the sea, making us feel giddy with delight.

Twenty minutes later at Gill Nanngu we had to wade out of the boat through the sea and up onto the white sand. Little wooden gazebos dotted the beach and we changed into our swimming gear.

The guide showed us how to snorkel, something none of us had done before. The two year old watched the schools of yellow fish whoosh past in the still clear water. “I like the fishes, hello cute fishes!” Another five minute boat trip and we were at the even smaller island of Gill Sudak. Our guide led us up the stairs of a wooden villa and sat us on the platform, like a king and queen.

Inside we had our own private bedroom and bathroom, an unexpected and helpful convenience with the children. The chefs brought up a bamboo tray with freshly grilled fish wrapped in a banana leaf and fresh juice.

My six year old looked out at the water and the green mountains beyond and declared, “This was the best day of my life!” You know what, I completely believe her.

For years Emirates have been impressing us with their faultless service. Now and again, they come up with something even more special that changes the way we fly, or expect to fly.

Their ICE entertainment system was cutting edge when it was released, and is still hands down one of the best in the skies. With personal lighting and temperature controllers, reclining seats that can be set to ‘zero gravity’ (I never thought I would need to have NASA inspired tech on a plane!) and up to 40 square feet of personal space in each suite, privacy, comfort and luxury has never been this good.

The fully-enclosed private suites are laid out in a 1-1-1 configuration allowing each guest the space and privacy they seek without having to see a fellow passenger (although we recommend being social!). While comfort is essential when flying First Class, so are the views. Even in the middle suite, you can enjoy the breath-taking views throughout your flight from the comfort of your seat. How? Well your virtual window provides high definition projections of the outside world, and in addition to avoiding cabin fever, you no longer need to about grabbing a window seat. Other amenities in the First Class Cabin are Hydra Active pyjamas and Bulgari amenity kits, something very simple yet ultra-luxurious.

As a Muslim of Jamaican heritage, I sometimes feel out of place back home. Local residents commonly assume I’m visiting from an exotic, distant land and not just another New Yorker visiting my folks for the holiday. Though Islam’s roots in the Caribbean date back to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (if not earlier), Jamaica does not yet have a highly visible Muslim community. The halal food selection is often limited to vegetarian or seafood, and it’s hard to find a mosque when you’re out and about. But, Islam is growing and I’ve recently discovered new opportunities for Muslim travelers in Jamaica.

Burgundy Roots, formerly known as Sip of Love Retreats, has been shuttling visitors to Jamaica in a totally new way. The mixed Jamaican and Canadian team promises an immersive travel experience that is Muslim-friendly with halal meals and mosque visits. But they inclusively invite all seekers of adventure and culture with a sustainable and community-supported approach to tourism.

Connecting with my own travel ethic, I leapt at the opportunity to spend a few days with Burgundy NOMADIC | 24 Roots as my host before connecting with my kin in Kingston.

After flying into Montego Bay, we were whisked out of the city and through the country roads by our driver and chef, Leon.

Our flight delay meant we wouldn’t arrive in time to taste his award-winning cooking for dinner, but he knew where to find the best ital stew to assuage our appetites. An overlooked stand along an unlit road served a soup so rich that I could taste every earthen ingredient from red beans to groundnuts. With much further to go, I bobbed in and out of sleep until meeting Burgundy Roots founder, Wafa Aouchiche, at our private villa in Treasure Beach. She led us to a spacious room furnished with fine woodwork, high, cozy beds and air conditioning. My earliest memories of summertime on the island are filled with sleepless, sweaty nights under mosquito nets and fans, so the AC was a welcome relief. Wafa brought cool water, showed us the prayer direction, and left us to sleep peacefully for the night.

Stirring with my children after sunrise, the aroma of fresh thyme, curry, and sweet coconut milk brought me to full consciousness. Chef Leon is no stranger to meatless cooking and whips up a pumpkin katari stew alongside lightly steamed seasonal vegetables effortlessly. While waiting to set out, we slipped over to Treasure Beach to greet the wild waves and prepare to meet a Muslim beekeeper in the countryside and visit Masjid as-Salaam in St. Elizabeth.

Venturing upward to the North Coast, we slowed our pace to traverse the bumpiest road I’ve felt in a while.

Carefully, we climbed up to meet Chris who took us to Free Hill where he grew up before migrating to Canada.

After taking in the mountaintop view, we rode a few bumps back down and turned into an organic oasis better known as STUSH in the BUSH. 15 acres of fertile land support the farm-to-table restaurant, food delivery service, and product line that Chris and his wife, Lisa, own and operate. Living as free as their hill promises, they work, rest, and thrive in a rustic dwelling, surrounded by lush greenery, crisp mountain air, and enough modernity to remain on ‘the grid.’

Chefs Lisa and Taylor served homemade plantain chips and yam croquettes, accompanied by guacamole and Blow Fyah pepper sauce,as we talked about life and the land that supports it. On our farm tour, we tasted tree-ripened jackfruit and tangerines, then had a pop quiz about the vegetables and herbs we could identify. Our night concluded with a stunning sunset and curated five-course meal that included STUSH in the BUSH’s signature Zionites Farm Green Salad, Black Bean Soup, Fire-Roasted Pizza, handmade pasta and Lemon Pound Cake. They’ve grown accustomed to Muslim visitors and respectfully offer a place to pray before bidding us farewell.

Venturing to the Blue Mountains above Kingston, we perched at Mount Edge Guest House for the night. We drifted into slumber basking in the cool breeze and rose with the birds for morning prayer.

Once the rising sun evaporated the morning mist, we were greeted by the panoramic view of endless green mountains that fade into shades of blue in the distance. Our delicious farm-fresh breakfast began with the internationally known Blue Mountain coffee and freshly blended fruit punch, followed by plantain and banana flambé, stewed ackee, boiled green bananas and dumplings. We went on to hike in the nearby National Park to behold an unobstructed vista of the bustling capital beneath us.

This retreat was a much-needed change of routine for me. I had grown so accustomed to the same places and faces that Jamaica had lost its enchantment to me. I’m frustrated by the crime and poverty in the city centers but forgot the gracious hospitality that abounds from the capital to the countryside. Having a Muslim host arrange the transportation, accommodation and itinerary allowed me to relish in the experience and see my homeland through a refreshed set of eyes. I have a renewed appreciation for the island’s beauty but also for the entrepreneurs who are etching their mark and creating a new future for the land we love. I’m fortunate to be in touch with what the emerging sustainable tourism market is serving and look forward to planning another adventure with Burgundy Roots once again.

CHECKLIST: THE CARRY ON

Packing for your travels isn’t always as easy as you want it to be. Many people spend hours debating what to take and what to leave at home. Despite knowing what the most important items are, we tend to forget that many of the items we consider important to us aren’t necessarily travel essentials. Packing your carry-on luggage is a completely different story from packing your check in luggage. Your carry-on luggage will physically be with you throughout your journey, meaning it should contain your most valuable belongings, your most important documents or items, and of course, the carry-on essentials to make your flight and landing a breath of fresh air.

RECHARGE WITH SNACKS There’s no doubt about it, airplane food isn’t always the best, and it’s not for everyone. If you're flying short-haul, then you'll probably manage but more and more longhaul flights are limiting their onboard snacks. Bring enough to keep you and your stomach happy during the flight, but not too much that is takes up too much room in your bag.

GIVE YOUR FEET A BREAK

DON'T ALWAYS RELY ON THE ENTERTAINMENT

With a lot of walking and standing about lined up for you at the airport, wearing comfortable footwear is a must, especially if you don’t want your feet to suffer! However, being comfortable in the airport and comfortable on your flight are two very different types of ‘comfortable’. Take an extra pair of slippers or flip flops to look after your feet on board.

While airplanes do have entertainment such as movies, music and games, it’s always a good idea to pack your own personal entertainment. Imagine flying four long flights with the same selection to choose from. You're going to run out of movies to watch! Don’t forget to consider using the airplane’s Wi-Fi! Nothing beats tweeting or updating your Instagram profile from up in the air!

ARRIVE IN STYLE: CHANGE OF CLOTHING After spending hours sitting down doing nothing but trying to sleep, you’ll probably notice you have the typical ‘airplane’ look. Packing a change of clothes with you is the easiest way to prevent arriving feeling like you've flown for 15 hours. Alternatively, take a pair of pyjamas to change into on overnight flights. Maybe avoid the onesie though!

Thai land Landing in Bangkok was a sensory overload. I'm not talking about the main airport; that was like any other airport I find in South East Asia, clean and modern. A popular holiday destination for many Brits, Spain is much more than simply sun, sea and sand. With hundreds of years of history and a strong Islamic connection, the region of Andalusia in particular should be on all our must visit lists. Well connected by air to all the main UK cities, and with excellent roads and rail networks within Andalusia itself, one can easily combine the historical touring with a beach stay all within a week’s trip.

With direct flights from both Manchester and London, Granada is an excellent place to start your Spain exploration. Granada is a year-round destination, with skiing on offer in the winter and the nearest beaches only an hour away by road. Two days in this lovely city are ideal to visit the breath-taking Al Hambra and explore the surrounding area of Albaycin. One of the most popular attractions in Spain, the Al Hambra is on everyone’s list when visiting Granada and with sales opening months in advance, tickets can get booked up quickly. An audio guide is recommended to learn more about the history and the many stories as you explore the complex at your own pace.

Spain has an excellent rail network connecting all the major cities in the country. Adventurous travellers can begin their tour in Barcelona before heading south and ending in Malaga, with stops on the way. Due to ongoing works, Granada is best connected by road and so self-driving part of the trip would be the best option.

Hiring a car is easy in Spain and is an excellent way to tour the region. Even if you are only hiring the car for a portion of the trip, many companies offer rail station pickups and drop-offs, making it a much easier option.

After Granada, head south to the coast by road towards Malaga to spend a few days in a villa in the mountains or a beachside apartment. Day trips to the nearby Ronda Valley and Marbella allow you to explore more of the region and see more of the Moorish history.

The city of Malaga is great for walks along the long promenade whilst looking out across the Mediterranean shoreline. A favourite for all visitors, expect to see the beaches full in the summer throughout the famed Costa del Sol. There are numerous halal outlets in the city serving a range of cuisine from Middle Eastern menus to even dishes from the subcontinent. The outdoor mall Muello Uno is a lovely place to spend an afternoon, with a variety of restaurants and ice cream parlours which all overlook a small marina.

By high-speed rail, Cordoba is only an hour away from Malaga. Its excellent location allows for an easy day trip from Seville or a longer stay too. The key site is of course the Moorish Mezquita, now the Catholic Cathedral. Such is the similarity of the two, marvelling at the design and symmetry of the columns one is almost transported to the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. Unfortunately, the current day Mezquita used by locals is rather small and although it has a lovely location within a park, one should arrive early if intending to perform Jummah prayers.

The last stop on the tour is Seville, the capital of Andalusia and the centre of Muslim rule in the region throughout the dynasties. The incredible Alcazar of Seville gives a fascinating insight into how the rulers lived during the period, with its vast gardens, fruit orchards and ornate interiors.

One of the most beautiful palaces on the peninsula, its intricately designed domes and mosaic tiles are a must see, with the centrepiece being the expansive courtyard gardens and orchards.

The Giralda is another excellent piece of Moorish architecture in the city. Now part of the Cathedral, the Giralda was built as minaret for the adjacent mosque that was later converted into a church. It was cleverly built with ramps instead of stairs so that a mueddin on horseback could ride up the tower and give the call to prayer. Visitors who’ve travelled to Marrakech can see the striking resemblance to the Koutoubia Mosque in the city, which served as a model for the design of the Giralda.

Andalusia is the largest of Spain’s regions and so whilst these are the most common cities visited, there are others too which are ideal for a short stay. Andalucia is a region with much to see and do and, with excellent connectivity to the UK, it’s perfect if you're after a relaxing villa stay or for the more adventurous amongst us, touring the region and learning about its fascinating history.

Choco Craze When I found out there was a city that has a museum dedicated to chocolate, well, I just had to take some time out of my busy schedule to find out more. So after a short Eurostar journey, I was in Brussels, the home of the dark gold.

The Le Musée du Cacao et du Chocolat is a three storey house serving as a shop, demonstration kitchen and two floors of museum exhibition. Upon entering, you can watch the chocolate making demonstrations and then explore the exhibits, but I wanted to head out and sample the really good stuff.
