Can you share a bit about your background and how you got into designing equestrian facilities?
When I was a child, my parents bought an old, abandoned farm on the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin On the weekends as I was growing up, our family would drive from Milwaukee and stay and work on this property, which I absolutely loved The facilities were crude, very much turn of the century with potbellied stoves; no central heating, no plumbing There were also numerous dilapidated farm buildings on the property where I played; they were perfect for a kid to explore My family used or repurposed all the structures in some fashion, nothing went to waste I credit the farm for sparking my fascination with generational compounds and the beauty of utilitarian architecture, including those dedicated to equestrian purposes Years later, when opportunities came up to build and restore equestrian facilities as part of our residential projects, I was always very interested Word definitely got around and we continued to receive commissions for properties with an equestrian focus We delight in creating spaces specifically for horses and the people who love them
What is your approach to understanding the specific needs of both the client and the horses when you start a project?
It completely depends on the client’s dream and specific equestrian interest The design of any equestrian facility begins with the lifestyle of the owner We ask a lot of questions Is their focus on sporting events? Or is the desire to create an idealistic landscape with horses in the background? If the vision is specific to hunting and jumping, dressage, or steeplechase, among others, the owners not only have specific types of horses, they also have dedicated, specialized staff The people involved, the kind of horse, and how many are to be housed and cared for are the questions at the heart of our interview process We need to understand the size of the facility intended Is it just for personal use or is it for boarding? Do they travel to competitions on weekends? Do they go to a number of shows during the year? Do they have family members who are involved? We must thoroughly understand all the objectives before launching into a masterplan or design
How do you balance functionality with aesthetics in equestrian architecture?
We typically start with aesthetics; the vision and style for a given place guides the decisions to follow regarding functionality Any requirement can be accommodated with the specific outfitting of that building and those facilities What is the feed situation? What is the storage situation? How many animals are they accommodating? Are retired animals involved? What is the purpose of the facility? Barns need to accommodate human use as well as the animals Are owner suites and gathering places required? Do the owners socialize with their equestrian staff? We've worked on facilities where breeding was involved, which adds a commercial aspect Needless to say, any facility has a number of stakeholders involved and we need to talk with them all A good equestrian building is only as good as the sum of its required parts Each is unique
COLLABORATION AND CHALLENGES
How do you involve clients in the design process, and how do you ensure their vision aligns with practical and sustainable solutions?
We utilize an extensive questionnaire to begin the process, which gives the owner a wonderful way to articulate their ideas and overall program to us We also interview all the people who are involved in the day-to-day management of the farm who may have very specific needs to function effectively We talk to the barn manager, farm manager, and groundskeeper, the groomsmen and the support staff, the travel staff, the horse trainer, and of course, the client All the various interests are then prioritized and brought into the program Some take priority over others But once that program is established, and the barn's primary functions are worked out, we start looking at the infrastructure
VISION AND INNOVATION
What are the key features you prioritize when designing for equestrian use, and have they evolved over time?
The overall barn layout and how it is programmed is critical We consider the equine spaces, human spaces, maintenance spaces, and storage spaces Once we look at all those major components in a big picture way, we can move on to details like ventilation, natural light, a healthy environment, and choice of materials to support it all It is an evolution as we go; we take all those elements and explore aesthetic possibilities We make or recommend choices that reinforce the composition of the property, which leads to the aesthetic and functional success of the facility
How do you see the future of equestrian architecture evolving? There are technological advances every day specific to the different equestrian sports and regarding facility maintenance
We are mindful that our designs and planning for facilities need to be adaptable to advancements, and also future expansion or renovation Wastewater management comes to mind as an evolving element How is the water runoff from the barn handled? Is it put into a municipal system or does there need to be a way to treat that water on the property? Exercising equipment has increasingly become more sophisticated and we get to work out ways to incorporate the new mechanics into a building For instance, does it need to be in a pit? Does the pit have to be drained? How are the utilities coming onto it and how
are those accommodated? I think there will always be exciting new advancements to keep your horse competitive and in top physical shape Expansion for the next new thing is certainly discussed and always brought into the scope
What role does landscaping play in your designs, and how does it enhance the functionality or aesthetic of the space?
Landscape architecture is a huge component of every project that we do Consideration for the natural environment, the views, grounds, outdoor entertainment areas, privacy, and the entry sequence among other details helps establish the identity and functionality of a given property On the practical side, we make sure that the infrastructure is sustainable and supports the owner ’ s requirements
The entire complex, including how buildings related to each other, was informed by local tradition.

DESIGNING IN GERMANY
Could you describe the equestrian project you worked on in Germany?
Our client purchased a significant property to establish a horse breeding facility He also aspired to host his own Grand Prix on the grounds There was nothing historic on the site except for the trees and pastures and access points, so this was a project conceived entirely from the ground up The client's desired aesthetic was that of a traditional old farm typical to the region Our firm initially served as the aesthetic consultant but ended up designing the entire property before turning it over to a local architect of record and contractor to build To understand the regional environment and landscape, we traveled to Germany to explore the vernacular barns and farm buildings and identified reoccurring architectural themes and building materials, which led not only the design of the new purposebuilt structures, but the adjacent courtyards and barnyard spaces The entire complex, including how buildings related to each other, was informed by local tradition The result looks as if it has always been there and the farm functions precisely as the client desired
What unique challenges did you face in designing or building in Germany whether due to regulations, climate, or local architectural styles?
What comes immediately to mind was not actually as much of a challenge as a revelation! Storm water treatment through small personal treatment facilities are commonplace in Germany and are a very interesting solution In the United States, treatment of stormwater is handled by a municipal facility and properties are required to have access points to hold the water or sewers that lead to a town or city plant This is unnecessary in Germany, which is pretty nice It was also easy to implement as the advancement in technology was already in place
How did the German project influence your approach to future equestrian designs?
In some ways this project spoiled us a bit We were very fortunate to work on such a large-scale facility with wonderful building materials and extremely skilled craftspeople at our disposal We had unprecedented access to reclaimed materials and artisans who took pride in realizing the clay tile roof, the brick and timber details, and
custom windows and hardware This is normal building practice in Germany but atypical in our experience That said, it does raise the bar for future designs so that’s exciting to us!
REFLECTION
What has been the most fulfilling part of designing these spaces, knowing they serve both people and animals?
All our architectural commissions are gratifying because we fulfill dreams, often on a magnificent scale, and our clients, including their horses, love and use the properties fully Our projects are beautifully executed, purposeful, and are intended to serve as a legacy for many generations Our interest and expertise in equestrian architecture comes from designing barns and stables and supporting spaces as a significant component of a larger estate Often, the utility of the equestrian buildings define the character of a place and a lifestyle, which interests us tremendously We are uniquely prepared and excited for every opportunity to provide the superb design, building materials, and craftsmanship that comprise iconic, heirloom estates

THE EVOLUTION OF AMERICAN STALLS
ByLindsayHunter
CEOYashBalasariaon
Craftsmanship,Innovation,andLegacy
In the world of equestrian excellence, American Stalls has carved a niche for itself, evolving from a functional horse stall provider into a premier luxury brand At the helm of this transformation is Yash Balasaria, a visionary entrepreneur with a deep-rooted passion for quality craftsmanship, innovation, and customer experience In this exclusive interview, Yash takes us through the journey of American Stalls how it all began, the pivotal moments that shaped its evolution, and the unwavering commitment to building world-class stabling solutions From leveraging his family’s expertise in the steel industry to redefining equestrian luxury, Yash shares the lessons, challenges, and insights that have driven American Stalls to become a leader in the industry
Can you take us back to the beginning? How did American Stalls start, and what was the initial vision?
My family has been in the global steel industry for 35 years We specialize in heavyindustrial products for the steel making, mining, construction, fencing, and agricultural industries worldwide American Stalls was founded in 2005 as the equestrian division of our family business when we wanted to explore other verticals for our steel products In 2005, we won an RFP to build 1,500 horse stalls for HITS Horse Shows in Saugerties, New York In the beginning days, we focused our efforts in “high-volume” opportunities instead of smaller, boutique projects This was consistent with how we manufactured for our heavy industrial clients which is why we chose to focus on expo-stall equipment – servicing horse shows, fairgrounds, expo centers, and other commercial equestrian facilities
What inspired you to focus on temporary stall solutions in the early days?
We were often appalled by the lack of quality, safety, and mindfulness in the horse stalls when we walked through horse shows We naturally saw a need for a very high-quality portable horse stall product in the market That means high-quality raw materials, safe design, and functional hardware Additionally, our family business’s strength lies in our supply chain expertise, which is only unlocked when we manufacture in scale That is why temporary stall solutions made sense for us to focus and specialize in Over the years, we ’ re very proud of the amazing temporary horse stalls we ’ ve built for amazing facilities across the United States
At what point did you see an opportunity to transition from temporary stalls to high-end, luxury designs?
As we gained enough footing in the industry, the “high-end” market became a more natural extension of myself and our firm In the rest of our family business, we specialize in being industry leaders in niche, highly engineered products We then back our products up with our extremely personable, warm, and authentic service These two factors made the custom, high-end space a natural opportunity as it aligned with our product and client philosophies
"We naturally saw a need for a very highquality portable horse stall product in the market. That means high-quality raw materials, safe design, and functional hardware."
Yash Balasaria
Temporarystallsin2005
BUILDING A LUXURY BRAND
What was the biggest challenge in shifting the company’s image from functional, temporary stalls to a premium luxury brand?
At the time in 2019, we undertook a complete brand refresh, practically overnight We invested a lot of resources, time, and energy to get the rebrand “right ” If we were to do a reband in 2025, it would be a lot more challenging than it was for us back in 2019 Mainly because we were a bit of an unknown brand in 2019 to the broader equestrian community –only known by the decision makers of large facilities For this reason, our only real challenge during the rebrand was to begin building our portfolio of work
What were the key steps you took in rebranding American Stalls? Did you change your marketing, design, or messaging strategy?
In simple terms, we went from positioning ourselves as a Toyota to a Bentley or a Casio to a Patek Philippe Our product design spoke for itself as we used the finest raw materials, dialed in our design philosophy, and our choice in hardware However, it was vital that we communicated the right way to the community This included ensuring our digital presence was consistent, high-quality, and synonymous with what our clients are used to in other parts of their lives I’m a nerd for high-end marketing as I’m a watch collector, motor enthusiast, and hospitality nerd For that reason, I’ve always immersed myself in the marketing done by Porsche, Patek Philippe, Four Seasons, Singita, etc We ensured our digital, print, and physical marketing language was consistent Most importantly, we made sure that the new team we built was comprised of team members who had the hospitality DNA, where they naturally craved to deliver a surreal experience That is the best form of marketing –warm, authentic service from the heart
How did you educate your customers on the transformation and build trust in the new luxury positioning?
We build trust the minute our clients would engage with our brand –whether it was digitally or over the phone Digitally, our marketing and messaging was all about value, lifestyle, and education We deeply want to ensure our clients are well informed in their stabling equipment decisions
as they’re large investments in their horses, farm, and their daily experience You will find that is the case with the slew of educational materials found across our website, blog, podcasts, social media, but most importantly, when you speak to an American Stalls team member Each sales team member is an avid equestrian who has experience in showing, breeding, or simply having their own horses We built trust by deeply caring for our clients, their horses, and consulting them on what’s best for them
LEADERSHIP & VISION
As a young entrepreneur, what were some of the biggest lessons you learned while growing the company?
So many lessons and still learning every day! My biggest lessons are:
Relationships are everything Whether it is with our clients, their team of trainers, our fellow builder and architect relationships, our vendors, and the list goes on When we invest in deep, long-term relationships, we will win long-term We are a family business that will be here 100 years from now We are confident that many of those relationships will also stand the test of time
Our people are our greatest strength Our American Stalls culture is incredibly infectious in the best way possible We are a team of fanatics deeply passionate about building fine products and immersing ourselves in our clients’ projects We are obsessed with making sure our clients enjoy the entire process whether they are redoing their flooring or building a completely new barn from scratch We invest in our people and in our culture, which then takes care of the rest
We make our own standard Lots of people and companies look outward and then do things in their companies However, we don’t often pay attention to our competition We are confident in our approach, philosophy, and culture at American Stalls We have learned to make our own path by building the highest quality products in the industry – even if, sometimes, we outprice ourselves
We build the best and do the best work in the industry – we are confident the rest will follow
RELATIONSHIPS ARE EVERYTHING. WHETHER IT IS WITH OUR CLIENTS, THEIR TEAM OF TRAINERS, OUR FELLOW BUILDER AND ARCHITECT RELATIONSHIPS, OUR VENDORS, AND THE LIST GOES ON. WHEN WE INVEST IN DEEP, LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS, WE WILL WIN LONG-TERM.
YASH BALASARIA, CEO
You’re known for building strong relationships How do you approach partnerships and client relationships differently from others in the industry?
Similar to what I mentioned above, we are a family business group that has lived the American Dream and been here for 35 years It is my family’s and my legacy and desire to be around 100 years from now As a result, we are long-term thinkers and doers Everything from our relationship with our team members, how we invest our capital, to how we think about partnerships Everything is thought about through the lens of longevity If we do a project with a client, we always think that there is a high likelihood that we’ll help them with future, beautiful projects The same goes for our professional partnerships with architects, builders, designers, owners representatives, and more Each project is the seed for a multi-generational relationship where we get work together with high levels of trust, fun, and professional execution
American Stalls is now known for impeccable craftsmanship and design How do you maintain such high quality in a competitive market?
The simple benchmark is, “would I accept this in my own barn?” That is a very high bar as the product must be safe for the horse, first and foremost The product, craftsmanship, and design must be timeless, functional, and perfectly crafted This approach naturally flows top down and bottom up Each person in our organization takes tremendous pride in our craft and we view it as a reflection of ourselves
What’s your leadership philosophy? How do you inspire your team to keep innovating and delivering excellence?
My leadership philosophy is servant leadership As a leader, there is a time and necessity for results and performance That is nonnegotiable However, our team innovates, delivers excellence, and works tirelessly because we deeply care for each other I don’t view it as my team works for me, it often is the other way around – I work for and with them I don’t ask for anything to be done that I wouldn’t do myself We deeply care for our team members by investing in their lives, their personal and professional growth, and building meaningful relationships in our small business This, in turn, I believe allows our team members to feel safe, prideful, and confident in the firm they represent
THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN STALLS

EQUIVONT
Jessica@equivont com Equivont com
Born and raised in California on the back of a horse, Jessica had the opportunity to move across the country As a working amateur, she began researching options for bringing her horse along with her Where to board? Who to train with? What farrier options were there? Who transports horses across the country?
After spending hours searching on the web, she became frustrated with the outdated, irrelevant information available Existing directories provided a name and a phone number at best and there was no way of telling if this professional was even in business any more After leaving countless voicemails that went unreturned and thumbing through archaic websites, it was obvious there is a huge disconnect between riders and the professionals
In any other service-related industry consumers search online to find out what their options are Whether it be a restaurant, a plumber, or buying a car Why wouldn’t horse people adopt a similar approach?
This experience powered the concept of Equivont Jessica teamed up with Jacki to bring this word-of-mouth industry up to the digital era
Equivont partners with reputable and relevant businesses and professionals who WANT TO BE FOUND by the equestrians who are searching for them

LANE CLARKE
Mastering Horsemanship and the Art of Training
By Lindsay Hunter
As we gear up for our highly anticipated spring event, featuring a panel discussion with some of the top equestrian professionals, we had the opportunity to sit down with Grand Prix show jumper Lane Clarke A respected rider and trainer, Clarke has made a name for himself in the sport with his expertise in developing young horses and his deep understanding of horsemanship Before he joins us for our event, we wanted to learn more about his training philosophy, his approach to working with horses, and his insights into facility design and horse management
A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH TO TRAINING
Clarke’s philosophy revolves around understanding a horse’s individual limits “Every horse has a threshold,” he explains “The amount of pressure they can handle depends on their training and temperament The key is finding that threshold and working within it ” He likens this to children what seems overwhelming at one stage of life becomes manageable as they grow Clarke focuses on exposing horses to challenges in a way that builds trust and resilience, whether that means working near a spooky object or engaging them in strenuous tasks before allowing them to relax near something they fear
His approach with the talented yet initially difficult Venom is a testament to this method “Venom was beyond spooky He wouldn’t even jump poles on the ground,” Clarke recalls Through patience and carefully designed training, Venom transformed into a top competitor, winning numerous high-stakes classes
FACILITY DESIGN: A KEY TO SUCCESS
While Clarke is not a facility designer, he understands the importance of welldesigned spaces in developing both young and seasoned horses “A good facility provides options,” he says Essential elements include:
Varied arena sizes: Smaller arenas help with collection, while larger ones allow horses to stretch and move freely He also values arenas with and without rails, as open spaces can challenge a horse’s rideability in different ways
Safe, grippy footing: Good footing is critical to prevent injuries and support optimal performance Clarke prefers a firm yet slightly forgiving surface, such as a blend of sand and synthetic fibers, which provides traction while minimizing impact on joints However, he emphasizes that footing choices should be tailored to the specific discipline what works for jumpers, who need stability for takeoff and landing, differs from dressage horses, who require a surface with more cushion for collection, or reiners, who need footing that allows for controlled sliding stops
Turnout spaces: Different pasture sizes allow for gradual reintegration of recovering horses Small paddocks help limit movement for horses coming back from injury, while large pastures provide room for mental and physical relaxation Proper spacing between paddocks enables horses to interact socially while preventing biting or injury
Gallop tracks and obstacle areas: Having a designated gallop track allows horses to fully extend their stride, promoting cardiovascular fitness Clarke also finds value in incorporating natural and artificial obstacles such as small ditches, bridges, and water elements to expose horses to various challenges
Jump chute areas: Jump chutes allow young horses to develop confidence over fences without a rider Clarke prefers chutes that also function as training spaces, where horses can observe before participating Euro walker and lunge areas: He highlights the importance of a walker, which allows horses to move without being tied up, improving fitness and mobility
Well-designed stalls with attached runs: Clarke believes in spacious stalls with run-outs, giving horses the ability to move naturally throughout the day
Additionally, weather control features such as misting systems for cooling in hot climates and heated wash racks for colder areas help maintain horses’ comfort year-round Clarke also points out that well-placed, non-slip footing around barns and pathways is often overlooked but critical for safety
Beyond functionality, he values human-focused amenities, such as comfortable viewing lounges, office spaces, and even small apartments for staff, ensuring that the people caring for the horses have an optimal work environment as well
Clarke highlights the need for great stall design, high-quality watering systems, and technology like stall cameras for monitoring sick or pregnant horses “Even small details, like well-designed tack rooms and comfortable viewing areas, contribute to the success of a training operation,” he notes
A LIFELONG DEDICATION TO THE SPORT
Coming from five generations of horsemen, Clarke’s deep connection to the sport is evident in his training methods and horse care He blends practical wisdom with patience and adaptability, ensuring that both his horses and his clients receive top-tier training Whether refining a young horse’s confidence or optimizing their daily environment, Clarke’s approach underscores the importance of understanding, trust, and proper management in equestrian sports www haydenandclarkesporthorses com
