The Sturm Glow-Up

Don’t expect to book an appointment with German orthopedic surgeon-turnedskin-specialist Dr. Barbara Sturm anytime soon.

The aesthetics doctor and founder of her eponymous skincare line is busy tending to famous faces like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, to name a few. However, the skincare guru isn’t shy on revealing her top tips, even if you can’t snag a coveted treatment. Sturm is known for her science-backed, anti-inflammatory approach to skincare using innovative, active and surprising ingredients. Case in point: She is responsible for the viral “vampire facial” Kardashian once posted to Instagram, as well as the “Sturm Glow.” “I began my medical practice in anti-aging orthopedics, with a focus on anti-inflammatory treatments,” she says. “My entire skincare regimen aims to reduce inflammation, reactivate the cells’ functions, and lock in the body’s natural moisture reserves by protecting the skin’s barrier function.”

Her products range from cleanser to moisturizer and everything in between, from glow drops to supplements, as well as specific lines for certain types of skin. Ask any beauty editor, makeup artist or skincare enthusiast, and they will provide a resounding “yes” when asked if Sturm’s products are worth the hype. While she says we are leaving the “one-size-fits-all era of skincare,” there are some general guiding principles when it comes to basic skincare, especially as we transition seasons.

“The core of your skincare routine can stay the same but adjusting or adding products is essential when the seasons change,” she says. “In the summer your

skin tends to be a little oilier, so you don’t want to use rich or oily products. It’s also the time when our skin looks great but is in fact at its most damaged. There are two main factors we should watch out for, which are UVA and UVB exposure and heat damage. Sun exposure without the proper protection can photo-age the skin and cause inflammation and dysfunction. Heat can cause skin to produce more oil as well as heat rashes and sweat, which increases trans-epidermal water loss from the body, leading to dehydration, irritation and breakouts. The key is using lighter textured products that don’t overload your skin with moisture.”

She recommends a lightweight moisturizer, like her Face Cream Light; an SPF, like her best-selling Sun Drops with an SPF 50; anti-pollution drops to protect skin from free radicals from urban and digital pollution; and a hydrating mist for on-the-go refreshing. Dr. Sturm is constantly launching new products and collaborations, like her upcoming Microbiotic Collection designed for teenage and young adult skin, and a foot spray with Aquazzura. However, if she could choose her favorite product from her skincare line, it would be the Super AntiAging Face Cream.

“It’s my ultimate one-stop-shop if I’m on-the-go because it provides hydration, protection, and antiaging properties based on advanced science and years of development.”

Sturm’s products are available online, and treatments can be booked at her studios in Düsseldorf, London, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
