Furnishings today have evolved a long way in the last few years . The level of quality is either of the very best calibre and finish or it is of the lowest grade and coming from off shore companies. This is where the consumer requires education of what they are buying and why the pricing reflects such differences. We are finding our clients to be wanting to look at furnishings as a investment in -- both in long term use and the willingness to pay a premium for value. Branding has become even more important than ever.

Home furnishing of todays residences have taken on a whole new dimension. The impact of the economic times has changed how people look at interior design and their home furnishing purchases . We have seen both our retail and interior design clients we work with want a much higher level of information before they make their decisions. Working with clients now has become actually better as they are willing to listen and be educated and want research done

In what other ways has the world of furnishing evolved in the past few years?

What kind of range of product design and style are you seeing nowadays?

As for product range of design and style .... it has exploded with new ideas and products designs. The selection coming from all over the world lets the retailer show such a broad scope of design concepts to the consumer.

It is very exciting with all the new furnishings and lighting and accessories that we have arriving for spring .... never seen before in this city . And the reaction by the consumer has been overwhelming !! They are doing their research and looking for all the latest ideas. How is business today - what impact has all this change had on your sales? The increase in consumer response to home furnishings this year has been incredible . Sales are increasing at a four time level over the last few year to year dates. People are excited to work on their homes and create a environment and lifestyle that fits todays well traveled and busy schedule. The year 2012 and moving forward promises to be a very exciting year .

Channels Artistic Talent at ACAD


F2 Furnishings offers a refreshing change to the typical furniture store experience. Boasting 7,000 square feet of space at 1210 11th Avenue SW in Calgary’s Design District, F2 opened in 2010 and invites visitors into its “design centre and gallery,” as interior designer Stephen Wade calls it. Respect for craftsmanship is fundamental at F2, which specializes in modern ‘super furniture’ like the Barcelona chair and Noguchi table as well as Canadian made furniture and modern customization, offering in-house design that can be produced in 6-8 weeks. With 22 years of experience in a plethora of art forms (including work as a cobbler, seamstress/tailor, diamond cutter, even robotics designer), Wade spearheaded the partnership with the Alberta College of Art + Design 2 ½ months ago on behalf of F2. His vision was to create a gallery comprised of original art replacing the more static giclée art offered by mainstream furniture outlets, in turn, complimenting the furnishings. According to the designer, “Currently 55% of our in-store artwork is by ACAD students, a total of 8 artists, and we hope to house 85% of ACAD student and faculty artwork by the fall.” Wade and owners, who opened F2 in 2010, feel enthusiastic

about showcasing local art. “Artists have no idea what to do after they graduate. It is expensive to afford a studio and they don’t have enough experience to gain gallery representation so many start working the 40 hour week and gradually let go of their art,” says Wade. These works, including paintings, ceramics and glass, are used to stage each vignette in its showroom. Contemporary imagery and palettes at F2 create a fresh and exciting interface with visitors. Who wouldn’t look twice at a larger-than-life nude John Wayne figure in wood by Luke Mohr, delicate blown glass depicting birds by Tyson Isted, and abstract high gloss multimedia panels by Ashley Courtepatte (all ACAD student artists)? Wade has even approached Calgary-based fabric designer Lorraine Cooper to produce bedding for F2 and shows ACAD phenom Greg Abra’s celestial works in glass, collected by Elton John.

“Setting the stage is important when establishing personal attachments,” shares Wade who offers free, in-home consultations for customers who seek his advice. “Give me 45 minutes in a home and I’ll show up with my painters tape and a truck full of accessories to demonstrate how I can transform the space with the correct furnishings.” Chatting with Wade is an education. In minutes, he explains how a room has weight and flow, how it needs a direction line with impact points and how glass, metal and wood are neutrals and every home should have elements of each for balance. He demonstrates by swiftly dismantling a sectional sofa, which pulls apart into 3 pieces. Art openings are often regarded as soirees of snobbery where aesthetes expound flowery descriptions about brush strokes and visual metaphors while sipping wine. Refreshingly, this was not the case at the opening of The Art Gallery of Calgary’s recent exhibition opening of Carl White’s Pentimento and Mary Kavanagh’s Atomic Suite held on April 20th. Except, of course, for the part about the wine! The evening celebrated the opening of exhibitions by Calgary-based artist, Carl White, and University of Lethbridge Faculty of Art Chair, Mary Kavanagh, in what was a vibrant and relaxed gathering. Well-attended by members of the general public along with the art community including curators, artists, academics, art dealers and collectors, the opening was jovial in its embrace of local talent. Carl White’s solo exhibition Pentimento greets the visitor with 8 monumental works, which evoke a sense of awe as if one is stepping into the Louvre or Uffizi Gallery. White’s paintings are firmly embedded in figurative and representational styles, touching on portraiture and landscape, along with interior and still life compositions. His subject matter borrows from staples used in paintings throughout art history such as (in this show) horses, the nude and tall ships communicated with fluidity via spontaneous brushwork and staccato mark-making, which breathe freshness onto each canvas. Along with narrative and classical painting, metaphor is a regular device used in White’s oeuvre. Told through a tranquil palette of ochre, ultramarine blue and raw sienna, the compositions appeal to an innate definition of beauty. For those who appreciate the old Masters and long for representation

in contemporary art, White’s work is ideally suited. Articulate and well-read, White commented, “the imagery I use is deeply intentional while the act of the painting is not pre-meditated, it happens over time spontaneously.” There is a dialogue in White’s work that flows between the ancient and modern worlds, a type of push and pull, which he compares to the act of surfing in the way that it evolves and cannot by pre-determined. Born in Liverpool, England and educated at the Alberta College of Art + Design, White has a long-standing history of solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States and abroad. Pentimento presents a loyal progression of White’s 20-year career as a full-time artist in both subject and painterly approach, securing his role as an increasingly prominent talent in Calgary. Succeeding in what few artists do, White’s art is desirable to hang on your wall and conceptual enough to satisfy critics.

Mary Kavanagh’s multimedia project Atomic Suite investigates the topic of nuclear and atomic history, asserting her opinion about the aftermath of such military action. Kavanagh spent 3 years researching and recording military protocol at the restricted military base in Wendover, Utah inspired by her residency there in 2010 at the Centre for Land Use Interpretation. Atomic Suite includes photography, film, conceptual drawing, and performance-based elements bound together by a thoughtful reflection of the complexities and construction of warfare.


Kavanagh, who has been practicing art for 15 years, shared that she approached this project as a feminist, a Canadian and an artist, therefore occupying three unfamiliar roles in relation to the norms associated with U.S. military personnel. She said these combined identities contributed to the soldiers viewing her as nonthreatening, which in turn, allowed her to gain a wider access to the base. A major part of Atomic Suite

includes 72 photographs hung in grid formation, where the viewer comes face to face with the artist’s documentation of military culture: bomb parachute





hardware and soldiers in everyday activities. By capturing solitary moments over the course of her stay, Kavanagh allows the viewer to reflect on the nature of the military base. Across from this series, hang 32 drawings stemming from the artist’s research, which are broken down to depictions of animals used as test subjects to assess the impact of bombing, symbols of air hangers, canon fire, shock waves and drawings pointing to the aboriginal culture of the Hopi Natives who inhabit the area. Kavanagh’s skilled draughtsmanship
