COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF

Today’s kitchen serves many roles, from entertaining hub to daily gathering place, but its culinary function remains paramount. For designer Martha Dayton’s recent clients, that priority guided every goal. “The husband is an avid cook, so having his cookbooks close at hand was a top priority,” she notes.

Working with Rehkamp Larson Architects, Dayton’s team designed two freestanding anchor walls—one for refrigeration, the other for cooking— that define the space without blocking lake views. Those vistas inspired the material palette as well: custom cabinetry in a serene blue and limestone countertops that echo the shoreline. “The appliances also serve to define the shape and flow of the space,” Dayton adds. Collaboration between architect, builder, tradespeople and client produced a suite tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. A Sub-Zero Designer Series refrigerator and freezer column combo, 48-inch Wolf range, convection steam oven and custom copper hood deliver both exceptional function and distinctive style.

A DEFINING SUITE For many design pros, certain manufacturers simply speak their language. For Amy Storm, that brand is Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. After visiting a factory and witnessing U.S.-based production firsthand, she became a devoted fan. Her enthusiasm is clear in a recent project, where the refrigerator, range, hood, double ovens and dishwasher all hail from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Design options made an impact, too. “This client came with a well-defined personal design DNA, consistent across clothing, travel, pursuits—and even food management,” Storm explains. That vision shines through the glass-front Sub-Zero refrigerator, reflecting the homeowner’s passion for nutrition and organization. “Looking over to the range, the red knobs were perfect for these purists, complementing the veining in the marble tops and backsplash.” Beyond the main kitchen, Storm placed a Cove dishwasher in both kitchen and pantry, with an extra Wolf oven and microwave tucked into the latter to ease the visual load.

BACKDROP TO LIFE Ah, the heart of the home. Designer Whitney Ray breathes fresh life into the phrase: “A kitchen is a core part of lifestyle, and, as such, it reflects who someone really is—practical or playful, classic or adventurous.” For the new owners of a Linda MacArthur-designed masterpiece, that identity centered on two essentials: showcasing art and accommodating dogs and children. Ray and her Wyeth Ray Interiors team crafted a home that balances exquisite display with livable ease. The kitchen embodies timeless brightness while delivering drama through a 48-inch Wolf range and pewter hood. “Sleek lighting and modern furnishings kept the aesthetic from feeling too traditional, while integrated Sub-Zero columns perfected the look,” Ray notes. Having specified Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove for nearly 15 years, she praises their reliability. A favorite addition? The plumbed Wolf convection steam oven, which she loves because there is “no fussing with water trays like other models.”

W H O L LY I N T E G R AT E D “For us, a space isn’t complete until it feels impossible to replicate.” That belief guides Stacy and Traci Richardson of Paul + Jo Studio, whose work is defined by individuality. Their latest kitchen proves the point: baseboard-to-ceiling walnut paneling, a gleaming gold range hood with coordinating hardware and striking imported Italian Viola marble, which is even inset into the custom Wolf cooktop. Structural limitations prevented expanding the footprint, so the designers shifted focus.

“We emphasized sculptural presence and flow instead of size,” Stacy explains. The result is a kitchen that maximizes space while exuding artistry. For function, the choice was easy. “Our love affair with Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove began with Wolf’s performance,” Traci shares. “Living with these appliances daily showed us they are what our clients deserve.” With Sub-Zero’s preservation, Wolf’s precision and Cove’s whisper-quiet innovation, the wow factor is matched by lasting performance.

RICH WITH PERSONALITY

At the center of timeless design lies one factor: personality. In the kitchen, this often takes the form of choreography—how homeowners live, cook and host. For Amy Aidinis Hirsch and her team, capturing a client’s voice is paramount. Designing her own kitchen, Hirsch showcased her ethos.

“I did not want what everyone else in New England has,” she says. The resulting space features 200-year-old reclaimed beams, a walnut island and a suite of Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances. “At the center, a 42-inch French-door refrigerator sits seamlessly paneled with oversize custom walnut and blackened-steel handles, making a sculptural statement,” she notes. To the left, Wolf M Series wall ovens promise holiday meals made simpler, while a 48-inch cooktop range delivers Michelin-level performance. A hidden pantry holds a wine refrigerator, refrigeration drawers and a microwave. Hirsch enthuses, “With Italian heritage and my grandmother’s cooking at heart, the kitchen is sacred.”

PERFORMANCE + PRESENCE When a design firm sets its mission as “fusing styles, time periods and cultures to create interiors that defy the cliché,” something extraordinary is inevitable. Such is the hallmark of Benjamin Johnston and his team, known for unexpected aesthetic storytelling. In one recent culinary showpiece, a modern take on Hollywood Regency contrasts the home’s classical moldings, archways and ornamental details, oozing moody glamour. “Symmetry was a key influence, both visually and functionally,” Johnston explains. Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer columns on one side mirror wine columns on the other, framing a Wolf range with eight burners and brushed-brass knobs beneath a custom patinaed brass hood. Material choices like Nero Marquina marble, brass cabinetry and vintage Murano sconces extend the sense of warmth, age and quiet drama. “They are essential to the architecture of the room, where every decision supports both presence and performance.”

S O M M E L I E R ’ S H AV E N Many residential designs draw from their surroundings, especially when nestled in landscapes as striking as Sonoma Valley. Designer Lindsay Gerber embraced this approach in a 7,085-square-foot, 5-acre renovation conceived as a weekend retreat for a young San Francisco family. Central to her vision was showcasing nature. “The old kitchen was heavy with ornamental French country millwork, and vineyard views were hidden behind a wall,” Gerber recalls. “We opened everything up, connecting the space not only to the views but also two dining areas and a formal living room.” With the structure reimagined, she pursued a palette echoing olive trees and vineyard hillsides. Appliance selection proved the easiest decision. “Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove are what I have at home, and everyone knows they’re the best,” Gerber says. This Wine Country stunner features a Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and, naturally, a wine refrigerator—an essential in the region.

Known for her signature balance of comfort and elegance, she recently unveiled a fiveyear, whole-home project featuring three custom kitchens. The common thread? Her trusted partner, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. “With two sons in sports constantly raiding my own refrigerator, I know the performance and panache of these brands firsthand,” she shares. “They offer reliability you can trust in timeless, refined design.” In the main kitchen, a panel-ready refrigerator and dishwasher integrate seamlessly into a palette of custom cabinetry with brass hardware, a striking stone that wraps countertops, backsplash and hood in continuous flow, and accents of green beloved by the homeowners. Such was the case for Kaitlyn Wolfe, tasked with creating a Balinese-inspired retreat of tranquility, moody color, indoor-outdoor flow and smart technology. In the kitchen, fulfilling that vision hinged on Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Wolfe’s connection to the brand deepened after visiting its headquarters.

“I learned their history, saw their craftsmanship and experienced their farm-to-table ethos,” she shares.

It all served as inspiration in one of her latest projects: a kitchen wrapped with large-format porcelain tile, stone-like finishes and shou sugi ban veneer. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances integrate seamlessly into the millwork, complementing the warmth and depth of the materials. They also complement a principle by which Wolfe designs. “Sustainability is embedded into how we build and specify,” she adds. “These products are designed to perform for decades, not just a season.”

For one such household, designer Allison Lind proved a game-changing hire. “As designers, we’ve already waded through the options and identified the brands that stand out,” she explains. For this project, she envisioned a palette that felt creamy, bright, warm and modern, while ensuring functionality drove every decision—especially in the kitchen. The design includes a walk-in pantry with a grocery unloading zone, a hidden coffee bar and a cozy breakfast nook. For appliances, Lind recommended her trusted partner: Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. This magazine is about more than beautiful rooms; it’s also a celebration of the people behind them. Not only do we champion the designers, architects, builders and landscape architects who create the homes we publish, we also focus on the artisans and brands that bring them to life. It’s our honor to amplify their work and share it with an audience that truly values home design.

I also want to take a moment to thank our team. It requires enormous passion to tackle the Herculean task of producing thousands of pages of original content for every issue. From the discerning eyes of our editorial staff to the relationships of every regional team member, I am deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication. Of course, we are here thanks to the vision of our CEO and founder Adam Sandow and the work of founding editor-in-chief Pam Jaccarino, and we are all grateful for their inspiration and efforts.

It’s fitting that we end our year of anniversary celebration with a special feature, The Story of Home, honoring design visionaries. CRAFTSMANSHIP HAS ALWAYS BEEN at the heart of timeless design. In a world where

machine-made, mass-produced imports dominate the market, few companies remain committed to the artistry of hand-forged creation. Ashore Lighting, founded in Dallas in 1990 and led today

by CEO Kash Ashore, is one of those rare firms. What began as a small table-making business has evolved into a nationally recognized lighting brand, celebrated for its third-generation blacksmithing heritage and dedication to American-made quality. “Our philosophy is to create our products in the United States and stay true to handmade rather than mass production,” Ashore explains. Drawing inspiration from nature—tree branches, mountainsides and old European design—the company crafts chandeliers and fixtures that function as both illumination and art.

As they celebrate their 35th anniversary alongside Luxe’s 20th, Ashore notes, “The fact that we still build our products the same way they did 50 years ago is what separates us from the rest.”

Talk about your company’s origins. We began in Dallas, Texas, in 1990 as a small table-making business. Over time, we evolved into a full lighting company, officially launching that arm in 2001.

Today, we remain a third-generation blacksmithing family, hand-forging wrought iron lighting and accessories that stay true to our roots.

What sets your work apart in the marketplace? The industry has largely shifted to machine-made, mass-produced imports, and hand-forged production has nearly vanished in the U.S. Our commitment to building pieces one at a time—crafted like they were 50 years ago— makes us unique. Recently, we’ve also begun combining iron with onyx and quartz sourced from Brazil and Mexico, creating lighting that feels organic and truly one-of-a-kind.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Nature plays a central role in our designs. We look at tree branches, mountain textures and organic patterns, blending them with old European influences to form chandeliers and fixtures that are both timeless and original.

How do you see your company’s role in today’s design industry? We believe being a U.S.-made manufacturer is increasingly important. By creating products by hand, as artisans have always done, we preserve a tradition of craftsmanship that resonates deeply with clients seeking authenticity.

What legacy do you hope to leave? Lighting should not only serve a function but also act as a piece of art. We want our legacy to be a portfolio of designs that illuminate spaces while reflecting the enduring value of craftsmanship.

Ann Sacks has tapped longtime collaborators interior designer Kelly Wearstler and artist Andy Fleishman to expand their tile collections with new textural designs that bring a bold dimensionality to surfaces.

Wearstler’s latest collection, Made Billow, offers two styles, one muted and one smooth, each in square and rectangular shapes, that cleverly play up light and shadow. The L.A.-based designer has also added 10 new saturated color options to her handmade, ombre-glazed stoneware collection, Fade, including Sunset, a peachy pink, and Shadow, a wash of navy blue over claret. Both collections are made in Portland, Oregon, where Ann Sacks was founded in 1981. Meanwhile, Fleishman's Pillowed Leather collection marks his fifth collaboration with the company. Produced in his North Carolina studio, the 6x6-inch tiles are crafted to resemble leather, with realistic graining, subtle color variations and a curved surface that gives them an “upholstered” look. Venerable textile design firm Schumacher is no stranger to partnering with outside artists and designers. In fact, its first collaboration was with French fashion designer Paul Poiret—in 1930. “Collaborations bring a different point of view,” says the brand’s chief creative officer, Dara Caponigro. “They allow us to explore sensibilities that we might not otherwise on our own.” Two of their recent artist collaborations offer very different looks, but both weave in Schumacher’s distinct DNA. The first, with Colette Cosentino, came about when Caponigro discovered the artist’s painted canvases covering huge swaths of chain-link fence at the under-construction botanical garden Lotusland in Montecito. “My work is not loud; it whispers the imaginary,” Cosentino says. “I get to play like a child—spontaneously painting gardens, rivers, trees and birds.” Those charming scenes of flora and fauna are now represented in a line of ethereal wallcoverings. Upstate New York artist Richard Saja reached out to Schumacher when he was working on a solo show for the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in France to ask for toile he could embroider. Soon, La Liberté Americaine was underway. “Every single inch is embroidered by hand and completely one of a kind,” Saja says of the fabric. “I wanted to capture, in the most color-saturated way possible, the full range of diversity inherent in the American spirit.” schumacher.com

If walls could talk, they would surely be buzzing about the new Wolf-Gordon showroom, which made its debut at The Mart this summer. The American surface design brand’s growing assortment of wallcoverings, wall protections, upholsteries, draperies, paints and even dry-erase coatings are now on display in the 2,400-square-foot space. “This was our first true opportunity to create a showroom in Chicago that fully embodies our brand at Wolf-Gordon. We’re playful, we take risks and we have a deep love of color, pattern and scale,” says Marybeth Shaw, chief creative officer of marketing and design. “To bring that vision to life, I reached out to Sarah Dunn and Martin Felsen at UrbanLab—the perfect architectural team to design a space that not only captures our spirit but accommodates the many product categories we’ve expanded into over the years.” The vibrant showroom lures visitors inside with its bold design, where features such as columns of stacked cushions showcasing their upholstery collection encourage exploration. A circular lounge-like area spotlights the brand’s newest product category: drapery.

There, upholstered stools are surrounded by a selection of draperies, ranging from blackouts to sheers to velvets.

TEXTILE TELL-ALL After graduating from design school, Kathryn Faull founded Maresca Textiles, where she creates luxurious printed linens, wallpapers and outdoor fabrics available to the trade.

“I thought I would study fashion design but realized that textiles were my true passion,” she says. The studio, now based in Chicago after six years in Georgia, recently launched the Andrews Collection with four new prints.

Here, Faull talks to LUXE about her process and aesthetic sensibility. marescatextiles.com How do you approach your work? My intention is to always maintain the artisanal feel of my brand. All my designs start from marks made on paper using various techniques that display and highlight the hand at work. My prints are designed with purpose, referencing architecture, nature and my Southern heritage. Take the Andrews Collection: The colorways adopt the quirks of the Lowcountry and evoke nostalgic memories of home.

Designed through a modern lens, the traditionally inspired motifs and layouts are transformed into a collection of contemporary textiles and wallpapers that live in the present but honor the past and its influences.

Can you give us some insight into your process? I use many different mark-making techniques, from pen-and-ink drawing to watercolor. Each method has its own visual language, and I like to use them together to tell a story. Keeping the handmade look in the end product is important and sets the designs apart from others on the market. I want clients to love their textiles for years to come, which means keeping the designs classic and using the highest quality pigments, dyes, and ground fabrics and papers.

You’re from South Carolina and started your company in Georgia. How has living in the Midwest influenced your work? While living in Savannah, I had time and space to get started, but it took relocating to a bigger city to get my business off the ground. We live in Riverside, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

It’s one of the oldest suburban communities in the country and is rich in historical architecture. Victorian mansions sit next to craftsman bungalows, and there are even a few Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Architecture has always influenced my work, so I’m grateful to be surrounded by these gems.

Doug Van Tress, a Michigan native who opened his first shop in Chicago in 1989, embarks on trips to source vintage pieces and antiques as well as contemporary goods from Asia and Europe. The West Town shop is a treasure trove, where artful vignettes display club chairs, midcentury coffee tables, sideboards and all manner of lighting in over 10,000 square feet. The store also hosts special exhibitions, such as the current display of Indian Art Deco furniture running through November. “We have an ancient and modern aesthetic that mixes pieces from different periods and places into a coherent whole,” Van Tress notes. “We also have an atelier-workshop where we do restoration and custom fabrication. Q&A IN CONVERSATION Hinkley has such a rich history. How has the brand evolved over the decades? We began in 1922 as an outdoor lantern company, offering traditional and contemporary collections to bring style and craftsmanship to the exterior of the home. Over the decades, Hinkley has expanded into landscape lighting, ceiling fans and decorative indoor collections. Each new category was thoughtfully added to meet changing lifestyles and to extend our reach into every area of the home.

What distinguishes Hinkley from others in the industry? We pride ourselves on being a complete solution provider. As outdoor living has grown, we’ve introduced chandeliers, fans and wet-rated fixtures to bring cohesion and comfort to patios, pool areas and beyond. today’s haute homes, with designers taking the opportunity to turn an entertaining amenity into a moment of drama and glamour. “I always say the best bars are part utility, part theatre,” muses Eddie Maestri, the creative mastermind behind this chic exemplar, whose design cocktail calls for mirrored surfaces, standout lighting fixtures and a moody palette.

Functionally, a great bar needs to work hard, with artfully concealed storage, refrigeration and the prerequisite prep sink, but aesthetically, it’s a place to take risks, says the designer.

What challenges have shaped your path?

Convincing the trade and homeowners that manufacturing processes can meet design aspirations has been ongoing. A Four Seasons Nashville penthouse project pushed our manufacturers to re-engineer their processes, ultimately proving that high design and engineered quality can coexist.

What’s next for the firm? We’re celebrating 30 years by introducing Modulnova, an inventive Italian cabinetry line, and expanding our custom offerings. Pairing Italian craftsmanship with stonework typically reserved for luxury yachts, we’re bringing something entirely new to Chicago.

Q&A Where do you find inspiration? I behave like a sponge when I travel, immersing myself in the sights, sounds, smells, architecture, patterns, etc. I log these things in my brain (and phone!) and pull them out when the time is right. I cannot emphasize enough how many times I’ve been able to say, ‘I understand how to detail this,’ ‘I saw something similar on this building’ or ‘let’s use the pattern we saw in Paris.’ And Italy, well, she’s my favorite. I lived and studied design there so will forever be smitten with all things Italian.

Are there any exciting projects or new directions on the horizon? We have projects all over the country from Maryland to Florida, Nebraska to Montana and everywhere in between.

We are especially excited about a project about to wrap up in Utah late this fall. The house sits on top of a mountain in Victory Ranch. With windows that span both sides of the long, wide, stone-clad residence, you can walk up to the front door and see the fields and mountains in the distance.

Looking back now, what advice would give yourself and to emerging pros looking to make it in this field? I’d say take all the jobs, learn all the things and work some stuff out while you’re still a smaller firm, before you bring others into the mix. Then, hire outside help! No one person was created to do all the things required to run a design firm. That’s a pride issue for many of us, especially Type A personalities, but the win is that it’s done so much better when we release some of the grip to trusted individuals.

Having like-minded staff that loves to learn, is eager to grow and wants to keep clients happy is our secret sauce.

CRAFTING A VISION HAVING THE ABILITY to see possibilities and opportunities that others might overlook

and possessing the courage and creativity to bring them to life defines a visionary. Anees Jaber has that vision, ability and courage. As Founder and Owner of Anees Furniture—his award-winning, Chicago-based custom furniture company—he leads a forward-thinking team that is celebrated for excellence. “The core philosophy that drives my work is a passion for challenges and constant innovation,” Jaber says. “I enjoy pushing boundaries, exploring new techniques and continuously creating unique pieces.” With that said, Jaber knows that having a solid base from which to create is what allows him to build something exciting and new. What sparked your love of design and craftsmanship? While visiting an industrial arts school early in my youth, I was captivated by the smell of wood and the process of shaping it—there was something beautiful and artistic about transforming raw material into a form.

Share a milestone project. Our first project was the design of a sofa and three lounge chairs that were featured in our initial showroom representation in San Francisco. What started as a small opportunity quickly evolved into something much bigger. That moment perfectly captured my vision: creating timeless, customizable pieces with a strong focus on craftsmanship and detail. By listening to designers and delivering consistent quality, we built trust and momentum that’s led to a full collection of over 200 pieces and representation in 13 additional showrooms.

What’s new? We recently expanded our workshop to 120,000 square feet, which will allow us to grow our production capabilities, while maintaining our commitment to quality. On the creative side, I’ve been working on a unique new collection that we’re excited to share very soon.

Q&A DESIGN DIALOGUE Share a project that put your firm on the map. It was a luxury vacation home and rental property overlooking both a championship golf course and the Caribbean Sea. It was an ambitious international undertaking that required blending global design trends with local craftsmanship, while navigating shipping, logistics and cultural nuances. What made this project extraordinary was the opportunity to design a retreat that was not only breathtaking in its sophistication but also a functional investment property. What’s new and next for you and your firm? Growth on a global scale. Q&A DEFINING PLACES What sets you apart as visionaries in your field? Cohen: From my earliest days as a student of Colin Rowe at Cornell, I learned that every building has an obligation to its larger context: the town, city or landscape. That idea has guided our work from the beginning, particularly at a time when many architects emphasize the singularity of a building over its relationship to its surroundings.

How would you describe your core philosophy? Hacker: Our architecture is grounded in both physical and cultural context.

Stuart’s 1974 essay in Oppositions introduced the idea that architecture should respond not only to its locale but also to the history of buildings in a specific place. That remains a touchstone for us more than 40 years later.

Where do you find inspiration? Hacker: We study the history of 19th- and 20th-century residential architecture—not as forms to copy, but as principles to reinterpret. This allows us to weave together continuous modern space with traditional architectural detail.

What challenges have you faced in your careers? Cohen: Building a practice that could weather economic forces and shifting stylistic trends required discipline. Our unwavering commitment to design values and ethical principles has sustained us through decades of change.

How do sustainability and innovation play into your work? Hacker: Much of our focus is on repurposing existing homes rather than tearing them down. Remodeling and transforming older structures is both sustainable and culturally meaningful, allowing us to keep heritage alive while making homes livable in contemporary terms.

In addition to residences, it now encompasses hospitality and commercial interiors, as well as the interior design of high-end model apartments, consulting on unit finish packages and overseeing the interior architecture and design of common areas and amenity spaces.

Q&A CULTURAL OMNIVORES Define what makes someone visionary in your eyes. A visionary looks beyond trends to create something meaningful and lasting. It’s not derivative, but rather a rhythm between thoughtful engagement and intuition that results in work with enduring relevance.

What project best reflects your design ethos? Our Lake Geneva residence encapsulates our vision. Originally completed in 2005, it connected multiple pavilions within the landscape.

When the next generation inherited it in 2018, we expanded the home into a multi-generational retreat. While it now sleeps 24, the renovation preserved intimacy, scale and the home’s original connection to light, lake and land.

What moment clarified your purpose as an architect? Eighteen years ago, we completed a vacation home for friends in Northern Michigan.

At dinner there, I watched the family enjoy the spaces we had designed. Seeing them interact with the architecture and the landscape made me realize the true value of our work.

As a master potter, Frances Palmer has long intertwined her love for ceramics and florals. “Flowers have always been a part of my work, as I’m usually creating vases with certain blooms in mind,” the artist explains. For her second tome, Life With Flowers, Palmer focuses on floral gardening and arranging, particularly with the many species she grows on her Connecticut property.

“Even in the winter, I go out and use what’s blooming,” she notes. Whether it’s a gently curved Kimberly Denman sofa or a glowing Jonathan Browning pendant, each piece has room to express itself.

“Our curated settings have enough negative space to realize a maker’s vision,” Hughes explains. Another distinction is the showroom’s focus on craftspeople, many of them locals. “We home in on the smaller manufacturers—the people who are in their studios, pen to paper,” De Sousa notes.

LOS ANGELES Entering Harbinger is like being let loose in a treasure trove, where a kaleidoscopic array of fabrics, furnishings, wallcoverings and objects vie for attention—yet each vignette feels harmoniously arranged. That “curated chaos” is exactly what designer and owner Joe Lucas is after. “Harbinger isn’t a calm, minimalistic showroom; I mix the lines we carry like I would in a residential project— only more wildly,” he explains. The retail space is an arm of his firm, Lucas Studio, Inc., and an idea factory. He might cover a vintage chair in an unexpected fabric, display it beside a contrasting wallcovering, and pepper in European-sourced curiosities.

Fresh finds enter the showroom regularly, but Lucas is also loyal to the creatives he’s handpicked, like the Lucie de Moyencourt ceramic shells he’s carried since 2020. My strength lies in bridging vision and execution.

By blending creative and analytical thinking, I design spaces that are functional and timeless, elegant yet deeply personal. Clear communication and collaboration with clients, builders and craftspeople ensures every project moves seamlessly from concept to completion, with each detail thoughtfully managed.

Talk about a notable project that helped put you on the map. Last year, we completed a custom home that marked a defining moment for our firm. The design showcased our love of texture and form, where a modern framework was layered with traditional details for a timeless balance.

Rich woods and creamy tiles paired with crown moldings and intricate millwork gave the home depth and character while preserving a minimalist warmth. This project reflects our ability to blend modern design with classic character, creating refined yet livable spaces.

How do you include the client in your creative process? By listening closely to each client’s story, experiences and aspirations, we craft spaces that feel deeply personal and authentic. Every design decision is intentional, aligned with functional needs and resonates with clients both visually and emotionally.

LIGHT ON WHITE DESIGN STUDIO For a sprawling sun-drenched penthouse in downtown Miami, interior designer Alizee Brion kept to a soothing, neutral palette with accents of blue and green peppered throughout. But for the residence’s two powder rooms, she took a different approach, deploying what she calls “a concentrated expression of color” inspired by the Biscayne Bay views. With the alluring colors of the water serving as muse, Brion succeeded in creating spaces with “wow factor.” Take the blue-swathed bath (previous page), the crown jewel of which is a striking vanity carved from blue agate. The windowless space led Brion to embrace an overall moody vibe, explaining that “in the context of a Miami condo, which is always flooded with natural light, it’s an unexpected contrast.”

In a separate powder room (shown right), Brion selected a Calacatta green marble for the pedestal sink. A side-mount faucet keeps the vanity contemporary and minimal, while a plaster wall finish provides a resilient surface. “Plaster is extremely practical in a bathroom because of its waterproof qualities,” says the designer. “It allowed us to forgo a backsplash and provided a texture with depth and movement that has a hand-crafted quality, which we love to incorporate in our designs.” lightonwhite.com

NATURAL SELECTION THE WISEMAN GROUP “In this bathroom, it’s all about the stone,” says Megan Munoz, associate design director at The Wiseman Group. After walking past this semi-precious quartzite at IRG Stone many times before, hoping to find the perfect client for it one day, the opportunity to use it finally presented itself with the owners of this Palo Alto residence. Imagined for the home’s lower level, where entertainingoriented spaces like a media and billiard room are located, the powder room takes on an apropos club-like feel. With dramatic contrast and veining, the dynamic blue-green stone covers two walls and was also used to create a floating sink and lower storage shelf. The surrounding design elements, including a floor-to-ceiling mirrored backsplash, further enhance the stone’s presence. Michael Miller, Founder and Principal of CI DESIGN + BUILD launched his firm 15 years ago to provide a solution to an issue he identified in the field of Chicago construction. Since launching her Chicago-based firm in 2001, she’s brought a dynamic touch to residential and commercial spaces alike. “We focus on the impactful use of color, pattern and texture,” Jonlich explains, “and we love reimagining existing elements to create maximum interest.” Her early work in model home merchandising taught her to design quickly and strategically—skills she still draws on today. Community service also plays a part in this legacy, as Jonlich gives back by serving on municipal advisory boards and consulting on the renovation of historically significant structures.

Her advice? “Just start! “On two recent projects in Pennsylvania, we partnered with an Amish millworker in Ohio,” Bessenaire explains. “With phone and email communications off the table, we had to lean on meticulous documentation to communicate our design intent. What could have been a barrier became an opportunity to refine our process— and the partnership thrived because of it.”

he mighty pairing of brick and mortar carries within it centuries of building tradition. So, it’s perhaps no surprise that when interior designer Randy Heller was brought in to reimagine this circa-1890s dwelling enveloped in exposed Chicagostyle brick, she and residential designer Jenna Edelmayer were determined to honor its history and make the most of its beautiful bones.

Popularized after the Great Chicago Fire, Chicago Common bricks are known for their weathered surface and irregularities, as well as their color—ranging from salmon to ruddy buff. The clients, a young family of four, loved the brick in its natural, native state, so with the help of general contractor David Freeley, Edelmayer maintained, sealed and insulated it. Given the force of the brick’s visual presence, Heller coordinated a color palette to recede alongside the masonry. She began by “analyzing its many undertones, then explored various wood tones for the floors to see how those options changed throughout the day.” Then, she adds, “We selected coordinating wood stains and finishes that would complement the brick and the French white oak we’d chosen for the floors.” The palette she ultimately devised mixes cool and warm shades in organic hues (such as blacks, tobaccos and browns) and family-friendly yet sophisticated natural fabrics like wool and linen.

A previous renovation had imbued the home with a loft-like feel, but the owners desired a few changes to make it more livable.

“The circulation was the largest architectural challenge,” recalls Edelmayer, who worked alongside architect Michael Abraham.

Their solution? A gut renovation that added an elevator, new curved stair and repositioned the existing staircases.

With the open kitchen seamlessly connected to the dining, family and living rooms, Heller envisioned a cooking space that wouldn’t look like one. This family hub is “more like a room with hidden cabinets than a ‘cook’s’ kitchen with stainless steel

appliances,” she describes. “By paneling the appliances and using concealed hinges, they disappear into the custom cabinetry.” The space’s adjacency to the dining room and the family’s desire for a kitchen table for everyday meals presented the designer with a kind of Doublemint challenge: two of everything furnishings-wise in essentially one space. To keep things visually interesting, Heller dreamed up a combined island-table with two surface heights that blend the dual functions into one composition and lit it from above with a simple, linear fixture. In the dining room proper, a classic trestle table and midcentury-inspired chairs live beneath a more dramatic cluster of pendants.

Heller built the living room’s unadorned fireplace into a focal point with an asymmetrical, curvilinear cream-veined black marble surround. Here, she says, she “kept the furniture purposely very low against this very high ceiling,” and used accessories such as large antique Turkish vessels in various natural patinas and finishes to add nuance and surprise into the narrative.

The second floor’s existing light-drenched office—a colonnaded brick-sheathed volume—captivated all. Though they were loath to close in the expanse, the couple needed dual workspaces with acoustical privacy. Cue custom steel-and-glass doors between the columns, dividing the spaces while leaving them visually connected.

The built-in storage features a constructivist composition of open and closed geometries, while a mix of vintage and bespoke pieces—for instance, her 1960s-era desk and his made-to-measure counterpart—offer balance.

In the primary bedroom, an architectural envelope of creamy plaster walls with applied moldings adds an elegance to the white-painted brick behind the fireplace. Heller created an inviting seating area by the hearth and populated the window bay with a handcrafted three-legged chair and Spanish writing desk. “I didn’t want anything to feel too traditional or too modern,” she explains, “so we strategically combined the two.” The results here, as in the rest of the home, bridge centuries: the brick bones intact, but the spirit unmistakably of this moment.

ives evolve and so do the spaces that hold them.

For example, a home that’s perfect for a large family might feel a bit empty once the children grow up and take wing. That was the situation designer Bruce Fox’s clients faced, leaving them eager for a nest that felt more vibrant than vacant.

Their solution? Trading their traditional, suburban place for something entirely different: a condo in a sleek tower overlooking the glimmering span of Lake Michigan.

“The building is beautiful, and it was designed by architect Robert A.M. Stern,” says Fox, who worked on the project with general contractor Dimitri Kourkouvis. “It was lovely to begin with, but the clients requested adjustments to make it match the vision they had for how they want to live now.” Not only did the designer inherit good architectural bones, but he was also gifted with something else: an incredible landscape visible through the large windows. On one side of the abode are unobstructed vistas of the long horizon created where lake meets sky; on the other is the Windy City equivalent of a mountain range—a look to the tall buildings that sprout along the broad ribbon of Lake Shore Drive. “During the day, the lake is mesmerizing; it can be Caribbean blue, a moody green or muted gray—sometimes all of those in the space of several hours. But at night, it’s simply black, and that’s when the city lights sparkle,” the designer notes. “My job was not to detract from the view.”

Living nearby, Fox knows all about the allure—and the limits— of such vistas. “At first, you can’t look away, but after a time, you become accustomed to what’s outside the windows, and that’s when your focus turns inward,” he says. With that in mind, he set about creating an interior that is refined enough to stand beside the scenery without overshadowing it.

The couple’s incredible blue-chip art collection and meaningful antique pieces became an anchor for the project, giving the rooms drama, interest, and even determining dimensions and flow. “Bruce carefully listened to our vision,” says one of the owners. “The art placement went hand-in-hand with the furniture layout. In one case, we even extended a wall to accommodate a beloved Richard Misrach photograph.” That piece and others like it gave the rooms another defining trait: a distinctive color narrative. “I’m often associated with the use of color,” the designer notes. “But my client’s involvement in the art world draws her to a mostly white, gallery-like palette.

I introduced notes of blue into the rooms by borrowing shades from their collection.” The hue runs throughout in elements such as the cobalt glass light fixture hanging above the dining table, the living room’s dark-blue ottomans and accent pillows, sky-colored upholstered chairs in the breakfast nook, and pastel blue walls in the wife’s office.

Though starting anew, the couple still brought along some treasured furnishings from their previous residence. A tall grandmother floor clock stands sentry in the dining room, while the primary bedroom is home to a more ornate grandfather model. The dark wood and traditional molding of these timekeepers might at first seem out of place in a modern dwelling, but the new context lends the antiques a sculptural, contemporary nature. Elsewhere, pieces such as the petite accent table in the breakfast nook inject additional moments of classicism into the modern environment.

Ultimately, the new home is as artful as its owners. “It suits them, and they are happily living their new lives,” Fox says.

“I’m just so pleased I got to help them author it.”

I

t is rare for a stoic greystone to blush. But this one— perched in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood since 1905 and recently reimagined by designer Dan Rak—proves that a bit of flushed pink can be a powerful move. Rak tempered the hue with wine red, French blue and wood tones that, together, lasso the bold color into something that feels distinctly like home for this family, who were determined to nurture the house back to a state of warmth and livability. While an early-2000s gut remodel gave the residence updated systems, the rooms were left mute in the detail department. Rak and the homeowners sought to layer in wellconsidered flourishes such as millwork, a new staircase and intricate fireplace surrounds to bring back the missing sense of classic tradition—filtered through a spirited, contemporary lens.

Long before purchasing the greystone, the homeowners found themselves captivated by the peony-pink front door of Villa Sierra, a midcentury house in Palm Springs, California, and hoped to recreate it for themselves one day. In a stroke of kismet, their greystone’s original stained-glass bay window, which remarkably survived over a century of renovations, is tinted with pink and green, making a balletblush door a natural fit and setting the tone for the interior palette.

Inside, walls drenched in a burgundy-aubergine envelop the entry and living room. In the latter, Rak designed a new surround for the fireplace that weaves in branch and rosette motifs plucked from the home’s stone façade, and also refashioned the front bay into a window seat large enough for the entire family to cuddle up in while reading.

“In our very first conversation,” the homeowner explains, “we talked about how we needed everything to be very family friendly.” At the same time, Rak and the clients ran every idea through a simple filter: Could it plausibly have been here in 1905? The result is furnishings that look timeless, never precious (case in point: the cerused coffee table, which can, and frequently does, withstand coloring sessions).

Planted into the dining room’s new millwork by general contractor Roman Patro is a boldly scaled floral wallcovering that helps establish the room’s decorative palette. The space also has the bonus of a bay window, which allows for a round table and cozy upholstered chairs intended for lingering. “Whenever we can use round tables, we do,” Rak notes. “They create such a great space for conversation.”

The house divides neatly between public spaces at the front and family life at the back, where Rak’s sleight of hand unlocked a beverage center, walk-in pantry and new island to transform the kitchen into a hyper-efficient hub with a family room and breakfast nook. “One of the things I really like about this arrangement is it separates the color schemes so the moody is in the front, and the bright and fresh is in the back,” the homeowner says. The French-blue cabinetry in the cooking space gives it a sense of cheer, while the streamlined walnut-and-brass hood provides a focal point with a historical reference. The combination plays beautifully with the adjacent breakfast area, where a bubble chandelier practically effervesces above the coral banquette.

As for the primary bedroom, the homeowners preferred it serene, with enough neutrality to flex with their evolving tastes.

“Furnishings like the paired-but-not-matched nightstands infuse a collected-over-time vibe impelled as much by the room’s dimensions as aesthetics,” the designer notes.

What makes it all sing is Rak’s calibration, straddling the line between too much and not enough. The house is now undeniably of its century but also expressive of the family who lives here.

“Overall, we’ve embraced what we’re drawn to, rather than what’s of the moment,” the homeowner says—a choice that never goes out of style, in any color.

He expands, “It was the fourth home we designed for a longtime client and the trust established allowed us to take risks and dive deep into our creative toolkit. This is one of my favorite projects.”
