For any purveyor offering specialized products that contribute to the creation of a home, building strong relationships with both clients and trade partners is crucial. At Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, this goal is at the heart of a process all about priorities and preferences. "By starting with the right questions, we uncover the client’s aspirations," says Joy Pedroza, Wide Plank Specialist. "Discovery is vital; without knowing the client, creating a space that fits their lifestyle is impossible. I learn about their family, the furry ones included, and how they live. Knowing this helps us make the best flooring recommendations." Indeed, Carlisle is known for its vast inventory and smooth selection process. In Dallas, an updated showroom is also the talk of the industry. It has served the market well since 2018, and now the transformed space will be open five days a week
and offer top-selling product, a sample room and a focal wall of heirloomgrade planks. "It also creates greater opportunity to collaborate with our clients," says Kathy McBrayer, Wide Plank Specialist. "An educated client equals a satisfied client, so teaching has become part of our mission."

Scott Cook, Director of Central USA, shares his perspective on what’s trending. "Lighter, more modern finishes have been trendy, although interest in warmer, natural tones and dark woods, specifically American walnut, is picking up too," he says. He points to Casual Collection’s Weathered Windmill as a popular option. "White oak is by far the most sought-after wood, as its grain and versatility blend effortlessly with various styles, from minimalistic to rustic chic."

With their latest collection, Icons II, Donghia taps its extraordinary archive once more to create updated iterations of founder Angelo Donghia’s original designs. The Crescent Chair and Ottoman, newly arrived in the company’s showrooms, is a celebration of his mastery of scale, tailoring, comfort and elegance. “The two-tier slipper chair became a staple in Angelo’s own decor as well as his clients’ homes,” explains Doug Garfinkle, who was named creative director shortly after the company
was purchased by Kravet in 2020. (Donghia founded his company in 1968 and was renowned as much for his business acumen as for his interiors, which brought such clients as Halston and Ralph Lauren.)

MK WORKSHOP
Tucked inside South Austin’s historic Penn Field, interior design firm MK Workshop’s eponymous new showroom boasts a mix of vintage, custom and imported furnishings, textiles and lighting. The team considers the setting an extension of their craft, integrating a peaceful, timeless style. “We want to create spaces that let people pause, relax and resign from what’s going on outside,” shares Petra McKenzie, co-owner with Jonah Kilday. Visitors can find a thoughtful selection of vintage pieces alongside custom creations by MK Workshop. The firm’s Origami coffee table, for instance, was originally inspired by a piece of bent metal and features soapstone atop angled wood legs. Woven fabrics and custom rugs—including the studio’s Geometry rug line, made using sustainable materials like wool, nettle, silk and linen—are intended to make the showroom feel like a home. “Versatile and overstuffed, it came to embody and identify his style as luxurious, relaxed and distinctly American,” Garfinkle adds of the iconic design. This newly released model honors archival forms but has been updated for today. “The Crescent Chair embraces patterns and a playful spirit,” Garfinkle continues. “Its function and casual nature invite a relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, yet the tailoring remains second to none. As part of the third generation in a home furnishings family, brother-andsister team Tanner Moussa and Mackenzie Lewis naturally created their own furniture brand, Dallas-based Mous. Their debut collection, Narrative Arc, arrived in 2022 with stylish riffs on old-world techniques for modern living. Narrative Arc: Volume II builds on this foundation with a few novel touches. “Volume II is truly an extension of the design language we’ve developed,” says Lewis, noting how the team has delved even further into materiality for the new collection. Eggshell, for instance, feels fresh when hand-placed onto dark chocolate lacquer on the Culvert Cube. “These pieces are somewhat ethereal in shape and design,” Moussa explains, “but in every decision we make, we think about functionality.” The duo also seek out artisans around the world, many of whom likewise are multigenerational, to handcraft each item. mousstudio.com

KYLE BUNTING
For the first time in 23 years of creating gorgeous hides, Kyle Bunting is now expanding his lush rug offerings with two new materials: wool and silk. “It’s not a line as much as it is a capability,” Bunting observes. “Everything that our clients know Kyle Bunting for can now be specified in wool, silk and hide.” The designer knew he wanted to translate his expertise to the new material options, going beyond conventional flat carpets. “We thought that our take on wool and silk should embrace the fundamental lines found in our hides,” he muses. “We wanted to do more of what we love.” This vision comes to life in the details: Seams are emphasized, and heights vary in artful patterns, creating a play of texture and light. The company, which has a whopping 150 different colors used in hide, has expanded its palette to more than 300 hues for the new materials. In addition, Bunting’s team has been testing its mastery by making wool and silk prototypes of iconic designs from the brand’s archives. “We have about eight collections that we’ll be releasing over the next 12 to 18 months,” the designer teases. Having placed works in esteemed collections worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Guggenheim Museum, art advisor Sarah Calodney is on a mission to help create impressive and emotive portfolios. Below, the founder of Calodney Advisory, with locations in Dallas, New York and Aspen, shares her insights on curating a personal collection. @calodney_advisory
What do you look for in new artwork? I look for three things: One, the quality of the work—does the artist have mastery of their talent? Two, what does the artist have to say that is different than what has already been said? And three, does it make an emotional impact on me? This is the most critical—if I feel this, I can forget the other rules.
How do you encourage clients to “feel” art? Don’t just look at the art when you stand in front of it. You should have an emotional reaction to any work of art you are thinking of acquiring. If not, buying it is the equivalent of buying a book in a language you can’t read.
Which artists are you watching? I am in love with N. Dash, Rita Ackermann, Marina Perez Simão, Sarah Miska and Andrea Büttner.
How can collectors support the artistic community? Art collectors can buy from local galleries and support institutions, like Dallas Contemporary, that have a mandate to show local artists alongside international well-known artists.

GALA DESIGN-STUDIO
Presenting an immersive experience with sought-after kitchen, closet and bathroom furnishings, Gala Design-Studio recently opened a 10,000-square-foot showroom in Houston. The space was inspired by president and CEO Renee Galang’s travels, which she says “exposed me to the timeless elegance of European and Italian design, from iconic furniture to cutting-edge innovations.” The entire ground floor, for instance, is dedicated to the first and largest showcase in the region for 90-year-old Italian furnishing brand Boffi and sister brands, De Padova and ADL. On the second level, peruse a wide selection of accent options, from indoor and outdoor furniture to lighting, partition walls and exterior cladding. The space is meant to be functional and versatile, with elements like a working kitchen designed for gatherings. “As we continue to grow, Gala aims to become a hub for the creative community, hosting engaging talks and intimate previews that set the standard for modern, adaptable design,” Galang explains. galadesign-studio.com

Beloved for her neutral, tonal, collected interiors, Atlanta-based designer Beth Webb is a master craftswoman of peaceful environs, whether seaside, mountain top or in the heart of a city. And in no space is fostering a tranquil visual language more important than the bedroom—a cocooning place of retreat that’s squarely top of mind during this season of hibernation.
Webb’s distinct brand of quiet luxury is on proud display in her muchanticipated monograph, Embracing Beauty: Serene Spaces for Living (Rizzoli, February 2025), which promenades 14 magnificent homes from Florida to the Grand Tetons. Within its glossy pages, the designer subtly divulges the elements that, for her, compose a restful bedroom: soft palettes, gracious canopy beds trimmed with diaphanous drapery, richly textured
wall treatments, crisp Italian linens and a perch with patina to take in the views out the window.
Below, in an unpublished passage adapted exclusively for the pages of LUXE, the designer expounds on capturing the feeling of white (rather than the hue itself), and on the fundamentals that together make a home a sanctuary. Take a page from her design philosophy playbook in reimagining your own boudoir for a long winter’s nap.
The snowfall outside the window in Paris makes the city white in its body, white in its quiet. I wake early and sit in the lamplight, watching. This white. This quiet. How do we inhabit it? How do we maintain, in Stieglitz’s words, this “great white stillness?”
This is what I’m seeking: to enable us to live inside this sheltering. Sanctuary,

refuge—there are many names. “Embrace” speaks to this intimacy—to being sheltered and protected. When you are held by light, by space, by music, by a beloved, there can be a luminosity to embrace. There is an aura of refuge.
I studied fine art at university and, early in my career, visited the Florence Academy of Art, where they still taught in the tradition of 19th-century École des
Beaux-Arts academicians. They drew from life, down to the bones. They studied: line, material, proportion, placement, negative space, composition. My intention to this day is to apply that visual language of art to interiors. A room is an immersive composition. A key tool is light. In each of our projects, we start sculpting space with light. Our palette is quiet but always subtly tailored to the qualities of light in that landscape. East and west, mountain and coast, there is an intimacy of the interaction between light and color that we are very attentive to. At its best, it enables dissolution into quiet and contentment.
Within these serene interiors, detail enables discovery over time—all is not immediately revealed. When you study painting, you learn the value of negative space, of absence, of what is withheld. Like the work of the symbolist poets, it’s about allusion, not explication. “The ‘blanks’ indeed take on importance,” writes Mallarmé. It’s only upon closer
attention that one discovers the subtle shadings, the refinements, the textures. From the way the local light interacts with a palette—and how the subtlest difference in shade can transform the feeling of a space—to the touch of a textile so soft that it elicits an immediate sense of calm, a deeply attentive choreography of these elements enables the whole to be much more than the sum of its parts. It creates atmosphere. It creates sanctuary. And sanctuary is a form of embrace. When you imbue a home with warmth, welcome, charm and ease, it holds you in return—a room becomes a refuge, a house, a haven. As a designer, it is my life’s work to achieve this with each and every room. Materials Matter
It’s essential that the mattress companies I work with use natural materials. Spending eight hours a night with your face in something that’s full of harmful chemicals is not ideal. Lighting into the future is creative director Schuyler Sweet, a fourth-generation Boyd family member. The company was founded in San Francisco in 1921 and has more than a century of legacy under its belt, including creating the fixtures for the city’s famous Opera House in the ’30s. Since then, it has navigated changing design movements—Beaux Arts, Art Deco, midcentury modern—and countless innovations. That’s where Sweet comes in, with one eye on the past and one on the
future, with a goal to distill and finesse the Boyd DNA. “Every generation has their own philosophy,” he says. “My ethos is to bring Boyd back to its classic modern roots and add a levity to the brand.”
Boyd is now headquartered in Colorado, where everything is handmade to order. At the intersection of its aesthetic are materials like brass, bronze and copper— nonferrous, nonrusting materials that will stand the test of time—in silhouettes and shapes devoid of extraneous details. “Part of the challenge is making a really simple design,” says Sweet. “There’s elegance in simplicity.” The Ovalo pendant above embodies these principles: unadorned, hand-finished brass loops are suspended from the ceiling and illuminated by an LED light source. As for what’s to come this year, Schuyler hints at a move towards
femininity and softness, with glass having a noticeable presence. “Design is allowed to change with the times and reflect what is going on in the world—it’s a dialogue, a visual language.” boydlighting.com

Forging Ahead
HUBBARDTON FORGE
“When I first started at Hubbardton Forge 13 years ago, I didn’t have a job title,” says Andy Morter. “I was given a long leash to explore and tinker with materials and LEDs, which were changing the lighting landscape at the time.” Fast-forward to present day, and Morter, now design developer under the direction of VP of Design David Kitts, continues to experiment and take creative liberties, resulting in provocative creations like the Snaps collection, shown here and launching early this year.
The system’s leather straps, connecting LED modules that sit within alabaster discs, are fully customizable, giving interior designers the freedom to play with the configuration and positioning to create unique and bold installations. The fluid design is not necessarily inspired by a place or thing or era, but rather by the raw materials at hand. “It’s about the exploration of parts and pieces and bringing these materials and new technologies together,” says Morter.
The Vermont company’s goal is to build upon its storied foundation for everything created, from the newest leather Snaps collection to its iconic metal offerings. “I’m definitely the orchestra leader in our opera of sorts,” Robert True Ogden says of RTO Lighting, the company he founded 20 years ago and which has since grown to some 60 people. Departments dedicated to woodworking, ceramics and metalworking are filled with talented makers working alongside employees in logistics and prototyping to create pieces that sing.
At the beginning of Ogden’s career, crafting lights was a creative side gig that didn’t have the limitations of his day job, but he soon realized pursuing it full-time was far more fulfilling. Today, RTO Lighting is a craft-first company whose products are all handmade in its Philadelphia workshop, something Ogden feels immensely proud of as he oversees the artisans who put together each item.
“My hope is that, in having outstanding quality, these designs will be collected and passed down through generations,” he says.
Most recently, Ogden has come together with designer and owner of Fair showroom Brad Ford to launch their first lighting collaboration, the Alina Collection, comprising table, floor and pendant lights with beautiful hair-on-hide shades. Ogden was inspired after reading an article about leather tanning and some of the toxicities caused by the process, instead wanting to embrace the natural product as is. The makers love how the product turned out—cowlicks and all—with the RTO Lighting founder noting, “There’s a simplicity to the designs that celebrates form, function and materiality”. rtolighting.com; fair-design.com

Expert Opinion
When it comes to color and its effect on wellbeing, textile designer Lori Weitzner, a true expert on the subject, sums it up in two words: It’s personal. What feels calming or exhilarating to one individual might have the opposite eff ect for another. In her book Ode to Color , Weitzner has developed a test (which is also available online) that readers can take to learn which hues are best suited for them. The results are one of 10 unique “color worlds” composed of nuanced palettes for nuanced needs. Of the over 100,000 completed tests, the leading outcome is Fragrant Woods—the shades of an ancient forest like mossy greens and dark woods that, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, feel “grounding, rooting and nurturing,” explains Weitzner. “I’m known for creating ‘breathe out’ houses, and for me, greens are an amazingly calming tool,” says Connecticut-based designer Michelle Morgan Harrison. With this philosophy in mind, Morgan Harrison looked to floor coverings in gentle variations of the hue to anchor her clients’ Greenwich

The Wood Stone pizza oven is surrounded by Mutual Materials brick tile, and Woodbridge Furniture counter stools pull up to the island.

When remodeling this Washington home, designer Lisa Staton worked hard to ensure it didn’t read as “new,” channeling the old-world European charm her clients fell in love with during their travels. That aesthetic became the cornerstone for an update that created timeless rooms for work, play and relaxation. We asked Staton how she shaped some of the most significant spaces in the abode. lisastaton.com
How did you approach the kitchen? This part of the house is important because she is a cookbook author and wanted a beautiful place to work and photograph her culinary creations, and he enjoys roasting and brewing coffee. Residential designer Adair Orr of Armadillo Design Lab and I relocated the kitchen to the other side of the house to take advantage of the views. It is a workhorse room— cooking implements hang over the range within arm’s reach—but is also styled as an extension of the living spaces. Most of the appliances are hidden in the pantry, which keeps things airy and allows room to display items like serveware, plants and candlesticks. Perimeter cabinets are a soft white, the island is a natural wood tone, and both have traditional trim and marble counters.
Northwest Woodslayer fabricated the cabinets; the brass hardware and curved faucets are by Devol. A Thermador range is backed by custom vintage-looking tile the clients found in Portugal. Staton discovered the pair of antique pendants at Obsolete in Los Angeles.

Tell us about the coffee bar between the kitchen and dining room. My java-loving client wanted to make coffee while enjoying the sunshine in the kitchen, but we couldn’t find the right spot. Instead, we established a coffee bar in the passage between the two rooms and then surrounded it with interior windows that allow for plenty of light. The location is perfect for entertaining, as it permits him to easily serve guests a cup no matter where they are sitting. This dining room color is dreamy! We wanted it to be differentiated from the lighter colors in the kitchen. When you enter the dining room, there is this sense of reaching a retreat or destination as you are surrounded by inky color painted on paneled walls. How did you decide on the mix of pieces here? The clients owned this table but requested fully upholstered chairs to surround it, so we gave them comfortable seats covered in an old-school plaid textile. Scalloped bone-china shades on the pendants are new and add a fresh note. The wall sconces and the rug are vintage—older pieces add emotion to a room. Although we occasionally use online sources, I insist on visiting local and East Coast brick-and-mortar shops for antique and vintage pieces. It’s a practice that provides the kind of organic discovery an algorithm just can’t feed you.

What was the goal with this laundry room? Since the owners will be in this room a lot, why not make it as enjoyable as it is functional? We kept the original cabinetry but painted it a soft blush color. Adding butcher-block countertops was key, because the material is durable and attractive. I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house. You could say the same for the vintage-inspired laundry rack and step stool. All these elements help the very modern washer and dryer live comfortably in a more traditional environment. The deep-green wall tile reflects the gorgeous Pacific Northwest colors you see outside the window and gives the space a relaxing feeling.

What were the considerations for the primary bathroom? One of the notable features in this room is the killer view. In order to not block the scenery more than necessary, we installed sweet café curtains that provide privacy but allow a look at the water, trees and distant mountains. The homeowner loves a soak, so a stand-alone tub was a necessity, and a pair of marble shelves provides a space for toiletries and candles. Their brackets, like the tub ller and taps, are unlacquered brass that will patina over time. Is the oor brick? This room seemed to call for a unique oor, something with an aged appearance. Brick was brie y
considered, but we opted for a tumbled marble eld tile the client discovered. It has a rosy hue, and it was masonry-like without being porous. When laid in a herringbone pattern, it certainly resembles brick. Tell us about hanging multiple light xtures over the tub. I was looking for something a bit more unexpected than a chandelier above the tub. The clients couldn’t pick just a single style of these handmade xtures, so we opted to use one of each, hung in a row at staggered heights. It’s something like a deconstructed chandelier, and you can appreciate their shapes as they dangle in front of a wall of simple white-hued tile.

When it comes to bringing a custom home together, the art of combining and complementing various elements is key. The interior design must complement the architecture, and the architecture should be bolstered by its surrounding landscape design, and so on. Enter, Fran DeLeo and Mark Fletcher. The interior designer duo believes in collaboratively influencing the architecture and being inspired by it in turn. “We help with planning the scale of rooms, meticulously selecting fixtures, materials and finishes that will suit the vision,” DeLeo says. “We coordinate all elements to create a unified whole, working closely with each client and team of colleagues on a project to reflect the lifestyle and personality of the homeowner.” Known for its work on luxury residential homes throughout the Dallas metroplex and beyond—with projects in Montana, Colorado and Martha’s Vineyard, to name a few—the pair’s firm, DeLeo & Fletcher Design, is beloved for its client-centric approach.

Discuss emerging trends in your industry. What are your clients excited about?
Fletcher : Many of our homes are featuring spaces designed to support wellness and longevity, such as infrared saunas, massage, cold plunge and exercise areas—the latter including fully equipped gyms, climbing walls and courts for pickleball, basketball and volleyball.
How has sustainability influenced your approach?
DeLeo: We are working on projects and communities that will be installing Tesla glass solar roofs and Powerwalls that allow clients to monitor and optimize energy production.
What’s next for the firm?
DeLeo: We are designing the interiors for the new Texas coastal contemporary community in Whitecap North Padre Island. We’ll be creating the luxury homes, as well as the amenities and unique development touch points.

Share an inspiration that influences your designs?
We love designing a room around a statement piece of art. Conversely, the perfect work of art can serve as the final, essential element that brings a space together. It’s like finding that last piece of the puzzle—it completes a room and elevates it to something truly special.
How do you include the client in your creative process?
We start by understanding each client’s stories, preferences and lifestyle. We then hold regular meetings throughout the process to review specifics and present materials. Additionally, we use detailed mood boards to lay out all design elements, ensuring everything is approved before being finalized. Whether the client is hands-on or more relaxed, we tailor our process to fit their level of engagement, while ensuring their vision is fully realized.

What communities do you primarily work in?
Hebb: Westlake and Southlake. Specifically, Vaquero, Quail Hollow and now Westlake Ranch. We build all over the metroplex with projects as far west as Possum Kingdom Lake and east as White Rock Lake.
Talk about a notable project that exemplifies your strengths as a firm. Hebb: Each project we build is, we feel, another “rung in the ladder” that keeps taking us to new heights. Our most recent notable endeavor was 2207 Vaquero Estates Boulevard, which we feel showcases our attention to detail in both construction and the understanding of architecture.

Where do you find inspiration?
Travel, without a doubt. Exploring new cultures sparks endless ideas. I also love flipping through magazines and browsing estate sales for hidden gems. Restaurant designs and hotels are constant sources of inspiration too— there’s creativity around every corner.

Bold, statement-making designs that are rich in detail. We’re unafraid of color and embrace layers, textures and thoughtful accessories to ensure every project is polished and full of personality.
What type of project would you love to take on?
I thrive on designing unique, unconventional spaces. We’ve tackled everything from yachts to media rooms and even a ladies’ parlor. I’m always up for a challenge and love to dive into anything that’s a little out of the box.

While commercial design presents its own fascinating set of challenges and rewards, there often comes a time when the interior designers of that niche crave a foray into the residential side of things. This is precisely how Staci Steidley came to found Studio Steidley. “I wanted to focus on the creative and personal experiences that accompany residential interior design,” she shares. “I had worked with notable commercial firms for 17 years and, while I loved that line of work, I was ready for a change.” It wasn’t long after she was crafting whole-home concepts and working alongside her clients and colleagues from the architectural drawings onward. “I love the process of collaborating with architects, builders, contractors and clients to develop a synergy within the team,” Steidley says. “We work closely from the beginning, meeting to ask questions and send inspiration images back and forth throughout the journey. A space is very much about how you

feel when you are in it, and hopefully if we have listened well, they will feel happy, productive, relaxed and whatever else they want to experience.” Speaking of inspiration, Steidley points to the architecture and design of Europe as a central source. In fact, learning about the cathedrals of this region as a child is what drove her to design.

Talk about a notable project you’re excited to take on. We are honored and elated to be chosen as one of the designers for the first annual Round Top Designer Showhouse. Ten designers from across Texas were chosen, and each will design a room within the house. It will be open for viewing during the spring fair in March. We will be creating a “chic Texas cowgirl” bedroom concept. We love designing bedrooms because we are experts at the small details that make a difference. As a longtime Round Top attendee and antique lover, this is the perfect project for me and our team.

When one sets out to follow a dream, there is certainly a sense of overwhelming hope that it can all begin on the right footing. For Jason Osterberger, that is precisely how the story goes. “My very first project still holds a special place in my heart,” he shares. “It was for a family from Mississippi who were building their dream home in Preston Hollow. That initial project turned into three more homes with them over the years, and with each one, we’ve been able to shift styles and create spaces that grow with their evolving family. My very first client is still with me to this day, and it’s relationships like those that make this journey so meaningful.” While this being the first endeavor Osterberger took on as the Founder and Principal Designer of Osterberger Design Group adds a special significance, it isn’t an outlier when it comes to project success.

Talk about your design ethos.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever received was from a professor in my plant identification class. He told us, “A weed is just a misplaced plant,” and that has stuck with me ever since. In every project, we carefully curate plant palettes to ensure they complement not only the home and the space but also the other plants around them. Every design decision we make has a purpose. If a detail doesn’t contribute to the overall story of the space, it’s a weed, and it doesn’t belong.
How has sustainability influenced your approach?
In addition to smarter plant choices, we’re also focusing on eco-friendly solutions like synthetic turf to reduce water use and minimize the need for chemical treatments. Water-conscious practices are a must in Texas, so we design spaces that maximize irrigation efficiency and make the most of every drop.

When a Houston couple found a gorgeous lot populated with towering pines in the city’s Memorial neighborhood, they knew two things: One, it was the location of their future home, and two, they wanted to capitalize on the property’s outstanding trees by creating a seamless connection inside and out.
“The clients were inspired by California living and the notion of indoor-outdoor spaces,” designer Benjamin Johnston explains. Working with builder Iraj Taghi, he installed as many north- and southfacing windows as possible to embrace the ample sunlight. Using huge expanses of glass helped to visually dissolve the separation between the interiors and their surroundings. “During the day, the light changes, and you have such a dynamic effect throughout the home,” the designer observes.
With architect Greg Roffino and interior designer Rajani Alvarado, Johnston approached the project holistically as part of his firm’s recent architecture program. “We have a lot of really exciting projects, some of which we are the interior designer for, some of which we are the architect for, but this was one of our first projects where we did both,” he notes.
Having the opportunity to complete the architecture and interiors hand in hand elevated the level of cohesion, from the floor plan to the final decorative touches. Each aspect was designated with a clear intention, beginning with the overall layout. The long, deep lot runs east to west, so the designer structured the abode as a long and rambling home that took advantage of its site. “The family knew they wanted privacy from the front,” Johnston says, so the study was placed near the entry to create a buffer for the more private living spaces toward the rear.
Exterior materials were selected for their ability to blend with the outdoors, then pulled inside. The living room’s limestone wall surrounding the fireplace matches the façade, and the plaster was painstakingly narrowed to a shade that visually harmonizes with the stone. In the adjacent kitchen, cabinets of white oak veneer reflect the natural light. “Much of
the color palette was pulled from the clients’ preferences, incorporating neutrals and their love of green,” Johnston adds. The latter infuses the home in various iterations, from a plush olive armchair in the bar to pops of avocado in a bold and sophisticated playroom upstairs.
Similarly, the ceilings tell a story that guides you through the house. A double-height living room and atrium create an air of grandeur, the entry made more dramatic by a sculptural floating staircase. Its railing is artfully enclosed in plaster and lined in LED lighting to create a sheltered, secure feel. In the family-oriented spaces, the overhead height drops to encourage an intimate tone: The kitchen’s wood-clad ceiling presents a cloud-like plaster feature that hovers over an expansive island, and in the primary bedroom, the white oak paneled ceiling wraps the retreat in richness and warmth. Both elements hide recessed lighting, a divergence from the statement fixtures that live in the entertaining spaces.
“We really desired the notion that the lighting itself had an identity—they were sisters, but not twins,” Johnston muses. “We didn’t want anything to feel redundant, so we explored themes with the lighting that all seemed to flow with each other but didn’t compete with one another.” A notably orbicular aesthetic is reflected in the living room’s winged fixtures, the galaxy-like chandelier above the dining table and the globes on the study’s otherwise linear pendant. It also repeats in a mounted milk-glass installation in the kitchen’s breakfast nook, intended to play on this same theme while straying from the obvious. “Instead of adding a pendant light, we thought it would be fun to use these little globes to define that space while also challenging the idea of placing light fixtures above a breakfast table,” Johnston explains. Covered in a custom green plaster, the nook has quickly become a favorite space for the family to dine, a special corner thoughtfully carved out by a unified team.
“We always like there to be an intention to the selection of products and furnishings,” Johnston shares. “We love the way it turned out, and we love that our clients allowed us to realize our vision for their home all the way through to its completion.”

The first time architect Patrick Taylor Winn visited his clients’ property in Johnson City, he was struck by its elemental beauty. Spanning hundreds of acres of central Texas shrubland, the parcel encompasses the owners’ cattle ranch and a lengthy stretch of the Pedernales River. Hearty grasses, craggy boulders and scrubby bushes layer the terrain in a riot of tones that evolve with each season. For the couple, the acreage held a cache of memories because they used to take their children to the property for camping and cookouts. With their kids now grown with families of their own, the pair was ready to build the ultimate haven for their retirement.
According to Winn, living on the river was a lifelong wish for the husband. For the wife, a modern, concrete, glass-and-steel house had always been on her bucket list. Combining the two wishes, the architect designed a riverfront residence with a straightforward plan: two bedrooms (one on either end of the east-west axis) with an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area in between. An upstairs loft is the wife’s office, and two elevated outbuildings, accessed via a custom steel bridge, contain a workout room and a party pavilion complete with a bar and hot tub. “It’s quite a simple layout,” Winn says. “The design is intended to facilitate fun for the family within this clean, modern aesthetic.”
To bring additional personality to the home, interior designer Sara Oswalt led the plan for art, furnishings and finishes. She had worked with the clients before, on an apartment in downtown Austin, so she was familiar with their style and the way they wanted to live. “The wife doesn’t want anything that takes too much care,” Oswalt describes. “She’s very utilitarian; she wants it to be practical.”
The minimalist, industrial materials—steel frame, slick-form concrete walls and floor—are softened by the blond fir ceiling, which brings a sense of warmth to the interiors. Furnishings were kept simple, focusing on functionality: places to sit, sleep and eat. Certain items—a large dining table crafted by a woodworker in Argentina, an heirloom
entryway painting, the lamps in the office—were brought over from previous homes and updated with fresh coats of paint. “The wife would take me to their storage space, and we would brainstorm ideas of how to reuse pieces,” the designer recalls. For instance, granite counters from their old residence became the tops of four bedside tables.
In choosing the palette, Oswalt was mindful of the surrounding landscape, highly visible through sweeping windows in nearly every room. The eyecatching, primary colors the clients were drawn to ended up working well. “The landscape provides a softness to the modern scheme because you see it in the background all the time,” Oswalt observes. “It enabled us to do some bold things but without them feeling too harsh.”
The living room is the strongest example of this, with a two-sided sofa in a rich yellow and chairs upholstered in cherry-red velvet. The designer also painted the frame of a vintage oil artwork in an electric blue to add a punch of color and make it feel contemporary. The kitchen and dining area are more muted: The former features the custom Argentinean table, repainted in a deep emerald green, while the latter is done up in white oak, blackened oak and soapstone.
In the primary bedroom, the wall behind the bed is made of rolled steel, so to edge out the harshness, Oswalt implemented soft fabrics, such as wool on the bed and velvet for the rug. “The client had these vintage armchairs she wanted to use,” the designer shares, “and we reupholstered them in a geometric fabric to make them modern.”
Additional swaths of color—a yellow epoxy floor in the upstairs office, mustard-colored curtains in the guest suite—take cues from the late architect Luis Barragán’s Mexico City house, where color blocking makes a significant impact. “We wanted to use it in a big way, so it is very intentional,” Oswalt notes.
The couple still gather with their children on the property, congregating on the patio or around the expansive dining table with views of the sprawling outdoors through floor-to-ceiling glass. It’s come a long way since open-air campfires, but on this ranch, connecting with family and friends will always be at the heart of the home.
In the parking court, architect
used poured-in-place cement sections separated by stone-filled channels. The house’s concrete, steel and glass construction echoes the rugged landscape beyond.

Built by Alpha Woodworks LLC, the custom kitchen cabinetry combines white oak push-front doors with black-stained oak borders, complemented by Taj Mahal leathered quartzite countertops. Above the island and vintage Arthur Umanoff counter stools hang a pair of Lambert & Fils pendants.

The primary bedroom blends antique pieces with modernist sensibilities. Vintage Italian chairs are updated in Schumacher fabric, tempering the rolled-steel wall behind the Lulu and Georgia bed. The scone and lamp are Le Klint.

After becoming empty nesters, a Dallas couple embark on a long-awaited renovation that keeps cherished memories intact.

Everyone’s design language changes over the years,” interior designer Bryan Yates says, “and these clients wanted a home that reflects who they are now, and in a very thoughtful way.” The owners bought their house in Dallas in the late 1990s, and over the years there were dreams of renovations—in fact, the wife had compiled seven binders’ worth of magazine clippings—but life was busy. When their children fledged the nest, the time presented itself. They looked at several new builds but ultimately decided to stay put and refresh the abode where so many wonderful memories were made.
“The goal was to bring in more natural light and create a more contemporary feel,” Bryan explains. Partnering with architect David Copenhaver, the two reworked the home within its existing envelope. “We removed a tall gable and formal cast-stone details from the façade and replaced them with a parapet wall, four new windows and a metal awning that make the house distinctly minimalist,” recalls the architect, who collaborated with his lead designer, Mike Penrose, and builder Rob Grasso on the project. Inside, his main challenges were reimagining the entryway and devising an atrium-like stairwell. “The original staircase was domineering,” the wife shares. “The light is so cool now. Our cat loves to bask in the sunshine, and the moonlight pours through at night.”
At the couple’s request, the team—which included designer Georgina Valenzuela and Bryan’s husband and firm partner, lighting specialist Mike Yates—also rethought the flow of the rooms for improved functionality. The dining room remained on one side of the entryway, with its de Gournay panel reflecting the garden views. The formal living room became the husband’s office, giving him ample daylight and room for a lounge. This new space, painted dark gray, connects to his former office, which is now a music room that leads directly to the main living area at the back of the house. “It’s more open, and you can see through the spaces,” Copenhaver observes, noting how the dining room’s interior glass doors help the atrium’s light fill the home.
“The homeowners were especially thoughtful about materiality and low maintenance,” Bryan adds, “so we went with a Scandinavian style where less is more, and the beauty of the honeycolored millwork warms everything up.” Walking into the glazed living area and eat-in kitchen, one immediately sees the leafy backyard, also newly refreshed by the designer, who first studied landscape architecture. “Like the old staircase, I never really loved the kitchen,” the wife admits. But over the years, she had imagined her dream cook space and knew exactly how she wanted it to function and look. “I created the design based on her list of ideas,” Bryan says, pointing to the double islands, one with seating and one for baking. “This is a real cooking kitchen, but it also needed to look pristine,” he explains.
In the living area, meanwhile, he focused on a bluish-gray palette that runs across the house, opting for performance fabrics for ease and longevity. “We keep our things forever and take care of them, so we really wanted new pieces that would stand the test of time,” the wife shares. Bryan is quick to add that finding a piece that you want to keep forever is an act of sustainability, an idea that resonated with the couple, who felt strongly about repurposing objects and held a salvage sale before demolition.
Upstairs, Bryan redesigned the guest rooms and couple’s suite with his clean-lined approach but invigorated the palette with colorful moments, like the salmon chaise in the primary bedroom window.
To heighten the contemporary air of the “new” home, the owners worked with art advisor Jennifer Klos to find pieces that would augment their existing collection. Now, works by artists including Otis Jones and Tom Orr hang in the public spaces, with pieces by Carrie Marill, David Morrison and Lawrence Lee adorning the bedrooms.
“It’s important to define what’s important to you, and these clients did that through so many years in this residence,” Bryan says. For the family, it represents a move forward while retaining the spirit of the life they’ve built together. “We brought our youngest child home to this house, we raised our kids here—it’s two decades of memories,” the wife reflects. “This is a beautiful new version of our home, and it’s so special that we could transform it.”
The longtime home of a Dallas family received an exterior update, including stonework by Renaissance Precast and windows from Kolbe Windows & Doors to refresh the brick façade. The Dutch door, flanked by RH sconces, is from Simpson Door Company.
