You’ve already spotted our new look on the cover, where images are larger and our logo—which has long been lowercase—is now writ in con dent capital letters signifying strength and endurance. It also re ects excitement and enthusiasm about our mission of showcasing the visionaries who create the beautiful homes we feature.

As for celebration, I’m proud to tell you that this year, LUXEis marking its 20th anniversary. A lot has changed over the last two decades, and with that, we are embarking on a year-long journey to refresh LUXE, bringing you more of the design excellence and inspiration you look for  in our pages, on luxesource.com, @luxemagazine on Instagram and in our design-obsessed communities across the country. With each issue, new ideas will be revealed.

Anniversaries are, in part, a time for remembering, and we honor our past. But my personal motto is “Always Looking Forward.”

With their latest collection, Icons II, Donghia taps its extraordinary archive once more to create updated iterations of founder Angelo Donghia’s original designs. The Crescent Chair and Ottoman, newly arrived in the company’s showrooms, is a celebration of his mastery of scale, tailoring, comfort and elegance. “The two-tier slipper chair became a staple in Angelo’s own decor as well as his clients’ homes,” explains Doug Garfinkle, who was named creative director shortly after the company

When curating State of the Arts Gallery, housed in an expansive space in Sarasota’s historic downtown district, owner Tre Michel says she treats it as a narrative. “We think of each piece installed in a client’s home as a story to share with guests—and that translates into a home full of stories, not just a showplace,” she explains. Michel concentrates on a variety of mediums, from large-scale paintings and graffiti to textiles and sculptures. She represents artists from Argentina, Poland, Montréal and the Czech Republic. “We focus on a collection of pieces that you haven’t seen anywhere else,” Michel says. “Each work is selected because it is innovative, fresh or mysterious in some way.” What’s on tap for 2025: “This year is all about adventures in bold choices,” she notes. sarasotafineart.com

How It Started. My dad was a woodworker. The greatest thing he taught me was causeand-effect thinking: If this piece goes here, that part can go there. With that mindset, I was always making and remaking things,

and furniture became an inevitable pathway. I officially started in 2011 working for Dale Reiki, but I’ve been making sawdust since I was a kid.

Creative Process. The starting point for every piece is to understand the space it will live in and what its intended function will be. I then endeavor to build something that meets those requirements yet hasn’t been seen before. I do this for my own artistic fulfillment as much as I do for my clients’ needs.

Proud Moment. I recently built a figured cherry makeup vanity, which was by far my most challenging and, ultimately, most rewarding piece of work. I began by laminating thin strips of cherry together and gluing them in forms that matched the irregular shape of the wall. To make the templates, I had to build a replica of the client’s space in my shop. I then sculpted the vanity to reflect the home’s architecture. The piece was delivered nearly 18 months after the initial commission.

Beloved for her neutral, tonal, collected interiors, Atlanta-based designer Beth Webb is a master craftswoman of peaceful environs, whether seaside, mountain top or in the heart of a city. And in no space is fostering a tranquil visual language more important than the bedroom—a cocooning place of retreat that’s squarely top of mind during this season of hibernation.

Webb’s distinct brand of quiet luxury is on proud display in her muchanticipated monograph, Embracing Beauty: Serene Spaces for Living (Rizzoli, February 2025), which promenades 14 magnificent homes from Florida to the Grand Tetons. Within its glossy pages, the designer subtly divulges the elements that, for her, compose a restful bedroom: soft palettes, gracious canopy beds trimmed with diaphanous drapery, richly textured

wall treatments, crisp Italian linens and a perch with patina to take in the views out the window.

Below, in an unpublished passage adapted exclusively for the pages of LUXE, the designer expounds on capturing the feeling of white (rather than the hue itself), and on the fundamentals that together make a home a sanctuary. Take a page from her design philosophy playbook in reimagining your own boudoir for a long winter’s nap.

The snowfall outside the window in Paris makes the city white in its body, white in its quiet. I wake early and sit in the lamplight, watching. This white. This quiet. How do we inhabit it? How do we maintain, in Stieglitz’s words, this “great white stillness?”

refuge—there are many names. “Embrace” speaks to this intimacy—to being sheltered and protected. When you are held by light, by space, by music, by a beloved, there can be a luminosity to embrace. There is an aura of refuge.

I studied fine art at university and, early in my career, visited the Florence Academy of Art, where they still taught in the tradition of 19th-century École des

Beaux-Arts academicians. They drew from life, down to the bones. They studied: line, material, proportion, placement, negative space, composition. My intention to this day is to apply that visual language of art to interiors. A room is an immersive composition. A key tool is light. In each of our projects, we start sculpting space with light. Our palette is quiet but always subtly tailored to the qualities of light in that landscape. East and west, mountain and coast, there is an intimacy of the interaction between light and color that we are very attentive to. At its best, it enables dissolution into quiet and contentment.

Within these serene interiors, detail enables discovery over time—all is not immediately revealed. When you study painting, you learn the value of negative space, of absence, of what is withheld. Like the work of the symbolist poets, it’s about allusion, not explication. “The ‘blanks’ indeed take on importance,” writes Mallarmé. It’s only upon closer

attention that one discovers the subtle shadings, the refinements, the textures. From the way the local light interacts with a palette—and how the subtlest difference in shade can transform the feeling of a space—to the touch of a textile so soft that it elicits an immediate sense of calm, a deeply attentive choreography of these elements enables the whole to be much more than the sum of its parts. It creates atmosphere. It creates sanctuary. And sanctuary is a form of embrace. When you imbue a home with warmth, welcome, charm and ease, it holds you in return—a room becomes a refuge, a house, a haven. As a designer, it is my life’s work to achieve this with each and every room. Materials Matter

Lighting into the future is creative director Schuyler Sweet, a fourth-generation Boyd family member. The company was founded in San Francisco in 1921 and has more than a century of legacy under its belt, including creating the fixtures for the city’s famous Opera House in the ’30s. Since then, it has navigated changing design movements—Beaux Arts, Art Deco, midcentury modern—and countless innovations. That’s where Sweet comes in, with one eye on the past and one on the

future, with a goal to distill and finesse the Boyd DNA. “Every generation has their own philosophy,” he says. “My ethos is to bring Boyd back to its classic modern roots and add a levity to the brand.”

Boyd is now headquartered in Colorado, where everything is handmade to order. At the intersection of its aesthetic are materials like brass, bronze and copper— nonferrous, nonrusting materials that will stand the test of time—in silhouettes and shapes devoid of extraneous details. “Part of the challenge is making a really simple design,” says Sweet. “There’s elegance in simplicity.” The Ovalo pendant above embodies these principles: unadorned, hand-finished brass loops are suspended from the ceiling and illuminated by an LED light source. As for what’s to come this year, Schuyler hints at a move towards

femininity and softness, with glass having a noticeable presence. “Design is allowed to change with the times and reflect what is going on in the world—it’s a dialogue, a visual language.” boydlighting.com

Forging Ahead

HUBBARDTON FORGE

“When I first started at Hubbardton Forge 13 years ago, I didn’t have a job title,” says Andy Morter. “I was given a long leash to explore and tinker with materials and LEDs, which were changing the lighting landscape at the time.” Fast-forward to present day, and Morter, now design developer under the direction of VP of Design David Kitts, continues to experiment and take creative liberties, resulting in provocative creations like the Snaps collection, shown here and launching early this year.

The system’s leather straps, connecting LED modules that sit within alabaster discs, are fully customizable, giving interior designers the freedom to play with the configuration and positioning to create unique and bold installations. The fluid design is not necessarily inspired by a place or thing or era, but rather by the raw materials at hand. “It’s about the exploration of parts and pieces and bringing these materials and new technologies together,” says Morter.

The Vermont company’s goal is to build upon its storied foundation for everything created, from the newest leather Snaps collection to its iconic metal offerings. RTO LIGHTING

“I’m definitely the orchestra leader in our opera of sorts,” Robert True Ogden says of RTO Lighting, the company he founded 20 years ago and which has since grown to some 60 people. Departments dedicated to woodworking, ceramics and metalworking are filled with talented makers working alongside employees in logistics and prototyping to create pieces that sing.

At the beginning of Ogden’s career, crafting lights was a creative side gig that didn’t have the limitations of his day job, but he soon realized pursuing it full-time was far more fulfilling. Today, RTO Lighting is a craft-first company whose products are all handmade in its Philadelphia workshop, something Ogden feels immensely proud of as he oversees the artisans who put together each item.

“My hope is that, in having outstanding quality, these designs will be collected and passed down through generations,” he says.

Most recently, Ogden has come together with designer and owner of Fair showroom Brad Ford to launch their first lighting collaboration, the Alina Collection, comprising table, floor and pendant lights with beautiful hair-on-hide shades. Ogden was inspired after reading an article about leather tanning and some of the toxicities caused by the process, instead wanting to embrace the natural product as is. The makers love how the product turned out—cowlicks and all—with the RTO Lighting founder noting, “There’s a simplicity to the designs that celebrates form, function and materiality”. rtolighting.com; fair-design.com

Expert Opinion

When it comes to color and its effect on wellbeing, textile designer Lori Weitzner, a true expert on the subject, sums it up in two words: It’s personal. What feels calming or exhilarating to one individual might have the opposite eff ect for another. In her book Ode to Color , Weitzner has developed a test (which is also available online) that readers can take to learn which hues are best suited for them. The results are one of 10 unique “color worlds” composed of nuanced palettes for nuanced needs. How do you build hurricane-resilient homes?

Historically, our homes outperformed our area’s challenging coastal conditions, including the recent impacts of hurricanes Helene and Milton. When remodeling this Washington home, designer Lisa Staton worked hard to ensure it didn’t read as “new,” channeling the old-world European charm her clients fell in love with during their travels. How did you approach the kitchen? This part of the house is important because she is a cookbook author and wanted a beautiful place to work and photograph her culinary creations, and he enjoys roasting and brewing coffee. Residential designer Adair Orr of Armadillo Design Lab and I relocated the kitchen to the other side of the house to take advantage of the views. It is a workhorse room—cooking implements hang over the range within arm’s reach—but is also styled as an extension of the living spaces. Most of the appliances are hidden in the pantry, which keeps things airy and allows room to display items like serveware, plants and candlesticks. Tell us about the coffee bar between the kitchen and dining room. My java-loving client wanted to make coffee while enjoying the sunshine in the kitchen, but we couldn’t find the right spot. Instead, we established a coffee bar in the passage between the two rooms and then surrounded it with interior windows that allow for plenty of light. The location is perfect for entertaining, as it permits him to easily serve guests a cup no matter where they are sitting. This dining room color is dreamy! We wanted it to be differentiated from the lighter colors in the kitchen. When you enter the dining room, there is this sense of reaching a retreat or destination as you are surrounded by inky color painted on paneled walls. How did you decide on the mix of pieces here? The clients owned this table but requested fully upholstered chairs to surround it, so we gave them comfortable seats covered in an old-school plaid textile. Scalloped bone-china shades on the pendants are new and add a fresh note. The wall sconces and the rug are vintage—older pieces add emotion to a room. Although we occasionally use online sources, I insist on visiting local and East Coast brick-and-mortar shops for antique and vintage pieces. It’s a practice that provides the kind of organic discovery an algorithm just can’t feed you.

What was the goal with this laundry room? Since the owners will be in this room a lot, why not make it as enjoyable as it is functional? We kept the original cabinetry but painted it a soft blush color. Adding butcher-block countertops was key, because the material is durable and attractive. I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house. You could say the same for the vintage-inspired laundry rack and step stool. All these elements help the very modern washer and dryer live comfortably in a more traditional environment. The deep-green wall tile reflects the gorgeous Pacific Northwest colors you see outside the window and gives the space a relaxing feeling.

What were the considerations for the primary bathroom? One of the notable features in this room is the killer view. In order to not block the scenery more than necessary, we installed sweet café curtains that provide privacy but allow a look at the water, trees and distant mountains. The homeowner loves a soak, so a stand-alone tub was a necessity, and a pair of marble shelves provides a space for toiletries and candles. Their brackets, like the tub ller and taps, are unlacquered brass that will patina over time. Is the oor brick? This room seemed to call for a unique oor, something with an aged appearance. Brick was brie y

considered, but we opted for a tumbled marble eld tile the client discovered. It has a rosy hue, and it was masonry-like without being porous. When laid in a herringbone pattern, it certainly resembles brick. Tell us about hanging multiple light xtures over the tub. I was looking for something a bit more unexpected than a chandelier above the tub. The clients couldn’t pick just a single style of these handmade xtures, so we opted to use one of each, hung in a row at staggered heights. It’s something like a deconstructed chandelier, and you can appreciate their shapes as they dangle in front of a wall of simple white-hued tile.

Some people love the majesty of the mountains. Others, the striking beauty of the desert. Then there are “water people,” as designer Andrea Goldman describes them. Be it lake or ocean, river or canal, they will always be drawn to the aquatic. Such was the case for a pair of Chicagoans who sought to create a waterside oasis in Naples. To fulfill their vision, who better to turn to than Goldman, along with designers Maize JacobsBrichford and Rachel Patek? The team had, after all, done just that for the couple’s home along the shores of Lake Michigan.

For their Florida retreat, the clients had purchased a lot overlooking a canal in a historic area. They wanted the abode to be at one with the surrounding homes, so they turned to residential designer Falconer Jones III and builder Maggie Canada, who had both left their mark on the neighborhood. “I’ve done quite a bit of preservation work here, so we started with that as a concept,” Jones explains. “But we incorporated features people look for in a modern home.” Think: an indoor-outdoor design, an open main living space and an elevated office. “The owners wanted it to be fun and nod to Old Naples without feeling dated,” Goldman describes.

Consummate entertainers, the couple wanted to host a plethora of friends and family, but it was imperative to proceed with caution in creating the home’s social spaces. “One mistake people make with an open concept is that it can become too open,” emphasizes Jones, who used elements like small headers and crown moldings as transitions between spaces. “You want to avoid that gymnasium feel. The rooms should communicate with each other visually, so everyone feels like they’re together, but they also need to resolve themselves.”

The same principle applies in connecting the built and natural environments. “The clients love indoor-outdoor living,” Patek says, “so we wanted the exterior and interior furniture to play off each other.” The team had to thread a needle between harmonizing the two while still making each area stand on its own. “We spent a lot of time figuring

out how to design two spaces that relate to one another but don’t have the same layout,” JacobsBrichford explains. Paying attention to scale and using materials such as wood, rope and durable upholstery ensured a cohesive look when the living area’s retractable doors are open, connecting the space to the terrace. “You can go from the pool to watching TV to eating dinner,” Goldman observes.

When it came to decor, the designers used light fixtures as the jumping-off point for a relaxed vacation feel. “The wife loves lighting,” Goldman explains, “so it was a natural place to start.” It was also an ideal way to bring in quirky details that reflect the waterfront locale, like the living area’s wood ceiling piece that emulates shells and the kitchen’s nautical-leaning globe pendants, which the team customized in a delicate shade of blue.

In terms of hues, each was carefully chosen to exude joie de vivre. “The wife wanted happy greens, happy blues, happy yellows,” Jacobs-Brichford describes. “And because we knew her aesthetic so well, we not only could give her what she wanted but also knew where to push her.” Case in point: the living area’s bold blue-and-white, lion-print curtains. “She liked the pattern, but it was out of her comfort zone,” Jacobs-Brichford recalls. It took some convincing, but the risk paid off—the unexpected motif mingles playfully with other upholstery in shades of azure, periwinkle, lime and pistachio. The color scheme carries through into the adjoining kitchen, where counter stools are upholstered in blue and green and sea-colored glass tiles serve as a backsplash. At other times, art acts as the color conduit, like the entry’s large-scale photograph of palm trees reflected in water.

The walls throughout the home also wear these tones, as in the subtly textured vinyl coverings in the bedrooms and a bold navy sisal in the husband’s office. The latter veers away from the sunny vibe into a moodier, more masculine one with warm touches of nutmeg and plaid. “The wife wanted to be sure the husband’s office was comfortable and inviting for him,” Jacobs-Brichford says.

This concept of living life to the fullest is reflected throughout the abode. Every room invites laughter and relaxation, capturing the essence of a waterside retreat. “This home is joyful,” JacobsBrichford muses. “It’s a place of casual comfort.”

Tracee Murphy understands the power of a memorable encounter. When general contractor Grant Castilow introduced the interior designer to the new owners of a Sarasota condo, “We all just kind of fell in love,” she recalls.

“Sometimes there’s a great synergy with clients, and this was one of those times. We all understood each other.”

Homeowners Al and Carol Hogan had experienced a similar captivating feeling when they first toured the residence. A blank slate just waiting to be decorated, the waterfront unit offered ample space, 13-foot-tall ceilings and a vast deck offering sunset views over Sarasota Bay. “You could immediately see out onto the harbor,” Carol remembers. “It was a real eye-catcher.”

This was the kind of stunning impact the Hogans craved every time they stepped inside. The couple envisioned a home unlike anything else around— a chic, contemporary and comfortable city condo that relates to the bay surroundings without typical coastal styling. “They wanted to open the door and feel something special,” Murphy describes.

So, the entry is exactly where she established the first unforgettable moment in the abode, transforming the white-walled foyer hall into a more striking introduction. “The entry was dark, because there’s no natural light there,” the interior designer points out. “It had a tunnel feeling.” To add flair, she wrapped the passage in a three-dimensional white oak trim studded with integrated LED ambient lighting. “Now, it’s like you’re walking into a highend hotel,” Castilow observes. “It’s amazing.”

The lengthy corridor leads to the living area, a lofty space with grand windows and a white fireplace that extended halfway up a wall. This, Murphy recognized, was another opportunity to drop jaws. “We wanted it to make a dramatic statement,” she says. Her answer: a wall of blackand-white porcelain slabs in a book-matched pattern that stretches to the ceiling, turning the fireplace into a showstopper. The feature is now a focal point for a seating area with a capacious sectional and a pair of armchairs that can face the flames or swivel to admire the outdoor view.

Throughout the rest of the spacious room are “pockets of function and beauty,” the interior designer describes—each with a particular purpose. One such area is the lounge, a corner nook to the left of the fireplace that was previously an empty niche. “The goal was to make it a destination,” she muses. Against the backdrop of a custom built-in, Murphy reached for playful textures like blush bouclé on twin armchairs, leather fringe on a gray ottoman and an ebony wood-framed mirror. “You can sit there and have a martini or cup of coffee and still be involved with what’s happening in the kitchen or communicate with somebody who’s hanging out in the living area,” she notes.

The lounge’s tones are among the punches of cheery pigments the Hogans requested amid a primarily watery palette. “It was important to them to bring in bold splashes of color—and to not be shy about it,” the interior designer says. “We intended to embrace the setting without feeling like you’re walking into a coastal home.” The residence’s range of carefully selected blues includes a turquoise vinyl wallpaper in the dining area— a bold transformation, as the wall originally contained a window that looked out to a nearby building. “I knew from the first time I walked in there, I would close in that window,” Murphy states. “The wallcovering is cool and comforting, and the texture gives movement and light reflection.” Instead of offering a view of a concrete structure, the space now exhibits colorful artwork, dalmatianprint chairs and a wall-to-wall refrigerated buffet with a reeded exterior.

More ribbed texture appears in the primary bedroom, where the interior designer warmed a curved wall using floor-to-ceiling slatted wood. Malachite green nightstands pop against the room’s neutral tones and call to the putting green on the adjoining balcony, one of the multiple outdoor entertaining opportunities. The main terrace boasts a grill area, dining for six, a lounge space and a bench that curves around a fire pit. Connected to the living area, it forms an extraordinary place to gather. “We wanted to make the condo cohesive from the inside out, so everything can flow nicely— and to make it all fun and a little punchy,” Murphy says. And that leaves quite the lasting impression.

When executed correctly, building a home feels like carving a sculpture from unmarked stone—chiseling wellhoned personality into every corner. A pair of Chicago empty nesters wanted nothing less for their custom forever abode along the canals of Bird Key in Sarasota Bay. “We wanted to make sure our house was not cookiecutter,” the wife shares. While embracing the surrounding tropical landscape, any place of theirs would be molded by the same curatorial character that shapes their impressive art collection: contemporary, bold and always joyful.

This vision became concrete in the hands of architect Clifford M. Scholz and residential designer Richard D. Oswald, with designer Christiana Engert carefully shaping the interiors. The project proved creatively tantalizing for the team. “We definitely were thinking outside the box,” Engert says. “Being able to play with their art pieces allowed us to be more playful overall.”

The architecture first bucked conventions. Instead of the coastal styles so endemic to the area, Oswald and Scholz reinterpreted a Northeastern foursquare farmhouse with steeply pitched gables and bay windows. But these classic details are executed with clean, minimalist symmetry refined by smooth white stucco walls, a pale limestone base, dark cement roof tiles and black aluminum-framed glass. “We wanted to marry the modern to the traditional,” Oswald explains. “We coined it ‘tuxedo style,’ with crisp lines and a straightforward black-and-white palette.”

Inside, daring finishes enliven the main floor’s great room, which flows to 40-foot-wide sliding glass doors that open to a sprawling lanai overlooking the canal. Off-white walls and pale chevron hardwood floors provide a neutral foundation for the interior’s dramatic stone slabs, lacquered cabinetry and metallic accents. “We never painted with a broad brush,” observes general contractor Michael Voigt, who worked with builder James Murphy as project manager. “There’s something unique every time you turn a corner.”

The eclectic decadence of designer Kelly Wearstler became a helpful shorthand for this fearless mosaic of materials, especially after Engert and the wife toured one of Wearstler’s Miami projects. “It offered

an element of inspiration on the use of masculine finishes and bold scale,” Engert points out. See the kitchen’s black cabinets, Dolomite marble waterfall island and glinting brass fixtures. In the living area, highlighting a neon-tinged Ashley Longshore portrait of Theodore Roosevelt is a monumental Nero Marquina marble fireplace. “That art piece needed something strong to support its scale, color and intensity,” Engert notes.

So much of the interior design contours around the couple’s treasured artworks. An abstract diptych dictates the elongated scale of the dining area, complemented by equally grand elements like a draped chandelier resembling a string of pearls. Other spaces borrowed hues from the art, such as the breakfast room’s velvet armchairs cushioned in a blue splash similar to the one on an adjacent painting. The study, meanwhile, channeled the pop art frivolity of the room’s Nelson De La Nuez mixedmedia work. Originally envisioned as an office before the husband retired, the space now features metallic grass cloth shimmering on the walls and vaulted ceiling, a mirrored lacquered bar, fringed leather ottomans and layered graphic prints.

When not referencing the couple’s art collection, Engert celebrated their love of nature through clever touches like trompe l’oeil. “My clients were drawn to the idea of incorporating Florida’s native elements,” she says. A hand-painted mural surrounds the couple’s bedroom with local flora and fauna, parrots flitting among swaying royal palm trees. “We liked the idea of keeping it native to Sarasota—to the birds, trees and flowering plants they can see in their backyard,” the designer says.

These botanical flourishes precede the poolside oasis waiting outside, adorned with chaise lounges and striped tasseled umbrellas evoking “a European resort feel with a vintage flavor,” Engert muses. Landscape architect Michael A. Gilkey Jr. nestled the refuge in a flurry of coconut, areca and bottle palm trees alongside floral bursts of Ixora Nora Grant and heliconia. “They create that laid-back tropical feel while providing privacy,” he notes.

With the couple’s home now fully composed, life is far from still, their colorful rooms constantly filled with visiting loved ones. But the owners enjoy moments of pause. “As the sun is going down, sitting on the lanai with our friends and family is pretty terrific,” the husband shares. It’s a beautiful tableau of everything they love.
