IN THE STUDIO MARISSA VOYTENKO

As a lover of history, it’s no surprise that artist Marissa Voytenko is enamored with the medium of encaustic. With roots in ancient Greece, encaustic is made from a combination of beeswax, resin and pigment. The effect leaves a waxy surface that can be polished to a smooth, glassy texture, mimicking that of glazed tiles. “I learned about encaustic in graduate school via the works of Hiro Yokose and Joanne Mattera, but it wasn’t until after graduation that I began experimenting with the medium,” Voytenko says. Using a flat brush made of sheep hair, she applies layer after layer of encaustic to wood panels before fusing them all together with a blow torch. She then reaches for a stylus to etch lines and other details into the wax, particularly grids and various shapes that give her paintings a meditative quality. “My work is informed by the geometric abstraction movement as well as architecture, both ancient and modern,” the artist says. “I am interested in bringing these influences together by presenting images that are difficult to categorize as belonging to any one era.” marissavoytenko.com

INSPIRING MIND Modernism can get a bad rap. It’s often construed as cold and unapproachable, but architect Celeste Robbins has taken it upon herself to dispel this perception. Her contemporary residential projects exude a comforting, inviting spirit, as seen in her book, The Meaningful Modern Home: Soulful Architecture and Interiors. Read on for Robbins’ take on local architecture and the warm side of modernism. robbins-architecture.com Tell us your thoughts on the state of residential architecture in Chicago. Chicagoans are increasingly seeking a sense of serenity for their primary residences that was once associated only with vacation homes, and architects are answering the call. While other states may be pulling homeowners to escape winter, we are designing dwellings that celebrate

LUXESOURCE.COM

Lake Michigan, Midwestern summers and leisure in our own backyards. Many shy away from modern design thinking it’s too cold and sterile. How do you inject projects with warmth? For me, modern principles are warm when done well. Modernism relies on proportion and balance instead of symmetry. This flexibility allows a home to be sculpted in a way that authentically reflects those residing within. For example, some walls may be left simple to allow light and shadow to dance, while others celebrate craft and materiality. I also strive to create a strong connection to the landscape by using large expanses of glass that bring in the beauty of the outdoors. Modernism is not an alienating style for only those who get it. Instead, it welcomes artistry, nature and each person’s vision of home.

Bill Dlugokienski and Adam Kruse have always been inclined to seek out handmade artisan pieces while on trips or mine local fairs for special items. After selling houseplants and ceramic planters out of a booth at a Chicago market as a side hustle during the pandemic, the couple quickly realized they could combine their passion for sourcing interesting objects with their business acumen. Enter Vase & Vessel, their recently opened shop in Andersonville, offering a curated line of home goods and flora. “Part of our dream was to incorporate the work of local artists, particularly ceramics, at the shop,” Dlugokienski says. The couple personally meet with artists whose work they’re drawn to and handpick only the best pieces. “Our area is fortunate to have so many gifted makers,” Dlugokienski adds. At Vase & Vessel, shoppers can peruse vases, jewelry dishes, wall hangings, baskets, ceramics, and self-care items like scented candles, soaps and cashmere blankets. All are created by emerging or career artists. “We want our customers to recognize the beauty that handmade items can bring into daily life,” Dlugokienski says. “We’re the store for the kind of person who collects interesting items while traveling—we just allow people to find those pieces without leaving Chicago.” vaseandvessel.com

JEN TALBOT In 2021, the principal of Jen Talbot Design tapped into her experience as a product designer and installation artist to launch a collection of furnishings, accessories and more. Here, the LUXE Next In Design 99 honoree delves into all things Studio Line. What was the inspiration behind Studio Line? Throughout the years in the luxury interior design arena, I found pieces often lacked a unique perspective. Studio Line was launched as an evolving collection of products born of innovation and modernism, made-to-order and produced in collaboration with local artisans and workshops. Tell us which pieces you’re loving right now. We have two new favorites: the Box Vase (far left), a rectangular version of our popular Bubble Vase (left), and our Perforated Cube Side Table, a rift-cut white oak piece with circle cut-outs and a tinted brown plexiglass top. What’s coming up next? We’re adding two new patterns to our wallpaper collaboration with ceramic artist Polly Yates based on the sketches she draws before creating her 3D sculptures. jentalbotdesign.com

ELIZABETH MOLLEN At her firm, Stone Textile Studio, this LUXE Next In Design 99 talent not only crafts stunning interiors but also bold fabrics, wallpapers, tiles and now rugs. Produced in collaboration with Fayette Studio, Mollen shares more about her venture into floor coverings. How did the collaboration come to be? We developed a mutual appreciation for each other’s aesthetics after working together on client projects. The collection was inspired by archived Stone Textile Studio wallpapers. Tell us how you applied those patterns to rugs. We spent a lot of time playing with scale. Kyra Schulhof of Fayette Studio knows rugs and was able to explain why certain patterns would not translate from the wall to the floor. We used a few from the wallpaper collection and dissected others to create new patterns better suited for rugs. Any favorites? If I had to pick, the Mosaic or Asymmetrical Border (right) rug—they’d make a statement in an entryway. stonetextilestudio.com See our Next In Design 99

FIELD TRIP

THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE X MINDCURATE

SCENE

DESIGN

Doug Van Tress, co-owner of popular shopping destination The Golden Triangle, has taken his design knowledge on the road with curated retreats. Hosted in collaboration with MindCurate, the trips offer meditation and mindfulness mixed with cultural exploration, sightseeing, shopping and dining, ideal for design lovers and wellness enthusiasts alike. Here, Van Tress chats about this latest endeavor. goldentriangle.biz; mindcurate.com Why and how did you start these retreats? It was somewhat random—I was at a party with Vanessa Palmer of MindCurate and I mentioned that we also have a store in Thailand. She suggested the idea of a retreat to Chang Mai. I agreed, but I thought I was writing a check that would never be presented to my bank to cash. Vanessa and her partner Nora Schneider are very persistent though. They kept clearing the path, removing all obstacles. What do participants do on these trips? Each day begins with mindful meditation and yoga, then my part starts. I lead the exploring from an insider’s perspective, visiting famous sites as well as obscure ones, with great food, history, culture and, of course, plenty of opportunity for shopping and shipping back.

TABLE TALK A self-professed Francophile, Bill Borman visits France four times a year—but not just for recreation. Borman shops the entire country for vintage copper cookware and tableware that he then often restores before selling through his business, Piggy Kitchen, both at antique fairs in the U.S. and online. “Our antique copper always seems to get the most attention, but we also sell antique French stemware, linens, cutting boards and anything kitchen related,” Borman says. The shopkeeper started 25 years ago when he bought his first set of five vintage copper saucepans at the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market in Paris. “Antique French cookware has an almost universal appeal, even here in heavily midcentury modern-focused Chicago,” Borman says. “It’s intriguing to see or use a newly restored copper stockpot that’s over 100 years old and think about how many meals it has cooked over its lifetime.” He adds that living with antiques provides a link to humanity on a daily basis. “I’d like to think we’re the antidote to the unused trophy kitchen,” Borman says. “Our business speaks to and advocates a more authentic way of living.” thepiggykitchen.com

STATE OF THE ART KATHERINE RATAY AT CKS COLLECTIVE

At CKS Collective, showroom owner Christina Karvelas Stavropolous represents and collaborates with the design industry’s top talents to offer everything from light fixtures and sofas to accessories and artwork. On February 23, Stavropolous will be exhibiting the works of somebody much closer to her—artist Katherine Ratay, who is also her sister. “I am one of three sisters who are all creatives,” Ratay says, citing her own interest in art, Stavropolous’ pursuit of design, and fashion designer sister Maria Patrinos’ recently opened boutique in Hinsdale. “Growing up, we were überexpressive,” she adds, which is evident in her abstract works. Ratay paints what she wants to see. She starts with an image or scene that she’d like to convey, “but the painting itself quickly takes over and pretty much dictates what I do next,” she says. “I’m definitely in the category of abstract expressionism. I move around quite a bit while I paint. I splash, smear and scrape. It’s emotional, and it’s a workout.” ckscollective.com

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com

ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

SIDE-BY-SIDE

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT

FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com

ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com

Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org

DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Chevron Comeback Arguably an overdone go-to of the early aughts, New York City designer Nick Olsen implores design buffs to recall chevron’s posh uses—think Emilio Terry chairs, 18th century Georgian doors, and those memorable floors by Albert Hadley. “I keep going back to chevron because you can tweak the proportions, add embellishments and color, and, voila, it feels fresh all over again,” he raves. Case in point: this Olsen-designed Bedford, New York, dining room. nickolsenstyle.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

A DDUCCI A NECDO T E “I have always been in the creative realm,” Adducci shares. “After many years as a pastry chef, I wanted to find a new creative outlet. Design was always of high interest, so I dove in head first. When I began immersing myself in kitchen design, it was a turning point in my life. It has been over 20 years, and I’ve never looked back.”

“No two clients are alike, and we take the time to understand the individual. For some, storage is the primary concern. For others, it’s all about entertaining.”

Top For a long-time Snaidero enthusiast, this kitchen features the brand’s designs alongside a customized, moving backsplash for sleek storage. The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

BATH + KITCHEN

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

photos: brian wetzel.

LIVING

Gage selected classic elements for the kitchen, including a fluted apronfront sink from Signature Hardware and ceramic scalloped pendants by Regina Andrew. The countertops are Caesarstone’s White Attica.

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

MORGANTE WILSON ARCHITECTS

“WE LOVE ENGAGING WITH PEOPLE WHO THINK ABOUT DESIGN IN A HOLISTIC SENSE, RESULTING IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL HOME POSSIBLE.”

W

hen it comes to crafting bespoke architecture, a team needs to be on the same page—or blueprint, as it were. Happily for clients of Morgante Wilson Architects, this is exactly how one could describe the working relationship between Elissa Morgante and Fred Wilson. With a shared love for all things design, the duo passionately leads the 36-year-old, respected firm. The secret to their success? “The relationships we’ve developed with clients, consultants and our team are key,” Morgante says. “These are the reasons so many of our clients work with us time and again.” Regarded for their whole-home approach, Morgante and Wilson draw from clients’ goals, but always with respect for the wider world. Hence, ecologically friendly building and energy-efficient options are often on the table. “We capture our clients’ aesthetic and enhance the way they live,” Wilson explains. Not surprisingly, they accomplish this through a collaborative effort: Morgante thinks of a home from the inside out,

while Wilson looks at it from the outside in. It’s a perfect blend for the husbandand-wife team. Asked to share the latest wins from their firm, they point not to the drafting table but the charitable agenda: “We’ve had another successful year of fundraising for affordable housing, and that is rewarding.”

Can you share some key milestones in the way of your company’s success? Our interior design division has grown to become a huge part of our business, expanding the richness and scope of the firm’s portfolio, while providing a valuable add-on service to clients. In addition to residences, it now encompasses hospitality and commercial interiors, as well as the interior design of high-end model apartments, consulting on unit finish packages, and overseeing the interior architecture and design of common areas and amenity spaces. What do you feel has been your greatest success? 36 years in practice; 36 years of marriage; and three great kids.

“WE ARE SKILLED IN OUR DESIGN CRAFT, BUT WE ARE ALSO THOUGHTFUL AND PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE DO EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.”

F

or so many creatives, recognition and success came from a single project “going viral,” as one might say today. Enter, Mia Rao, Robyn Swanson and the Hyde Park Victorian that put them on the map. “It was a rehab project and the first one we saw published,” says Rao, who leads her namesake firm, Mia Rao Design, alongside Swanson. “We collaborated with Kathryn Quinn Architects, and the resulting home was a vintage environment with modern, funky interiors.” It brought the design duo and their team a new level of exposure, and they’ve been winning awards, gracing covers and delighting clients ever since. While the homeowner’s preferences guide every element of their process, they are beloved for their unique take on design. “Our aesthetic is varied and eclectic,” Swanson shares. “Clients like our mix of modern, traditional and everything in between, and we are known for bringing energy, soul, balance and texture to a space.” Whether for a Chicago apartment, suburban estate or vacation

miaraodesign.com 312.850.4841 miaraodesign residence near or far, the homes Mia Rao Design crafts for its clients exude personality, warmth and undeniable elegance. As for what Rao hopes comes next, she says, “I want to continue working on projects with collaborative clients who are willing to take risks and trust our vision and process.”

Name influences and inspirations that inform your work and approach to it. Rao: We draw inspiration from the world around us—nature, music, art, architecture, food and culture. What type of project would you love to take on? Rao: We would love to design an island project in an exotic location or a mountain home. I love Telluride, Colorado, so that would be a pretty sweet location for an upcoming project! What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Swanson: We have landed large projects from our Instagram page, so that platform has become mission critical. It has evolved into a secondary portfolio and a way for clients to get to know our approach and personality as a firm.

A

s relocations go, moving to a house across the street sounds like a simple proposition. And it might have been for Joseph Brown and Kimberly Deeb—who undertook such a change— had the residence in question not been a multifamily dwelling inhabited by college undergrads who cared nothing for their 114-year-old greystone’s pedigree. The house was, as designer Michael Stornello puts it, “kind of a mess.” The sort that would require all his and partner Tom Konopiots’ design skills—along with the help of architect of record Dennis Kulak and builders Josue Sabillon and Jim Schueller—to transform the place into an entertaining hub. “When we first laid eyes on the residence, it was three apartments that were on the small side,” Stornello says. “The ceiling heights weren’t great, and in the lower level, they were just 6 feet high; it was truly cellar-like.” First, the team needed to reconfigure the multiflat layout into a single-family home that would suit their clients and a constant parade of houseguests. Walls came down, allowing the eye to travel the full length of the main floor—through the foyer, living and dining rooms, kitchen and a new family room addition—to the backyard. The latter, a “dirt patch,” Konopiots recalls, was transformed into a two-level outdoor living space that can accommodate 60 friends for cocktails. The original narrow stairway was jettisoned and a grand new staircase with one continuous handrail was inserted in the bay on the opposite side of the house. “We added skylights up top so, at certain times of day, the sun will flow all the way down to the lower level,” Stornello says. “It was a way to bring in light while introducing a sculptural element for the eye to rest upon.” Interior floor heights were also manipulated to achieve taller ceilings, a move that required the careful modification of the existing window openings on the home’s limestone façade. “Although we changed the front entry’s stairs, railing, canopy and columns—and added a standing-seam metal overhang roof to complement the mix of architecture on the street—it was all done with an eye toward making it look as seamless and original as possible,” Konopiots says.

178

LUXESOURCE.COM

When furnishing the reimagined rooms, however, Konopiots and Stornello sought to strike a balance between old and new. Against the living room’s demure abaca wallcovering and beneath crown molding trimmed with studded leather tape is a framed Brendan Murphy painting aswirl with graffiti-like symbols and Day-Glo hues. Next to the artwork is a window wall softened by draperies in a graphic print. “The abstract geometry of the pattern brought an up-to-date feel to the space,” Konopiots says. In the adjacent dining room, the designers granted Joseph and Kimberly’s wish for a “statement booth,” building a custom banquette against a steel-and-glass partition wall, then pairing the sleek creation with classic shield-back chairs dressed in a shimmering textile. “We liked the play of a traditional form with a more modern fabric,” Konopiots says of the seats. “It feels current but not too in the moment.” The kitchen, in turn, gives English country house vibes with its forest-green cabinetry, leather-trimmed brass hardware and countertop of crosscut walnut. Its dual-zone layout, however, which encourages cooks and guests to engage in conversation from opposite sides of the long island, is thoroughly modern. A few steps away in the family room, another contemporary convenience awaits in the form of a large sectional—U-shaped, “because everyone loves to have a corner for that cozy curl-up,” Stornello says. Saturated colors in a spectrum that ranges from earthy to jewel-toned emphasize the sense of comfort in every room: dark petrol on the living room sofa and millwork; burnt sienna on the dining room banquette; cinnamon red on the family room’s swivel chairs; deep rust in the basement bar; and soft evergreens on the primary suite’s upholstered bed and walls. “There are bouclés, silks, velvets and nubby rugs, which pair so well with jewel tones,” Konopiots says. “In the evenings,” Stornello adds, “the light bounces off those textures so beautifully. We’re touchers, and we both really like the tactile quality of the decor in this house.” Which is why now, when the designers are invited back as guests, “we tend to go around fluffing pillows,” Stornello laughs. “It’s so convivial, warm and embracing there; it’s something we can’t help doing.”

With its terrazzo flooring from The Fine Line and banquette upholstered in a Great Plains fabric by Holly Hunt, the foyer announces the home’s mix of historical references and modern finishes. Millwork coated in Crisp Khaki complements walls in Cream Fleece, both by Benjamin Moore.

With a touch of Parisian glamour, a 1930s Tudor enters the modern era.

COOL & COLLECTED

Interior Design: Amy Carman, Amy Carman Design Home Builder: Dave LaBonte and Pete Jendrzejek, LaBonte Construction

W

hen it comes to charm, a classic Tudor has it in spades. Which is why Dan and Irene Bozich adored the 1930s abode they purchased in River Hills, Wisconsin. There were beautiful moldings, marble fireplaces and many sets of French doors. But with all these lovely historical accents also came circuitous layouts, low ceilings and small rooms that didn’t make sense for contemporary living. With a young child, and one on the way, the couple knew it wouldn’t be conducive to raising a family. “We wanted to maintain that history,” Irene says, “but update it with a more functional floor plan and a modern style that reflects us.” The couple turned to designer Amy Carman to do just that, starting with fixing the awkward layout that consisted of three adjoining living rooms proceeding from the front of the dwelling through to the dining room. Beyond that surplus of spaces sat the kitchen, which, for Irene—an avid foodie and cook—was the most important room of the house. But in the original floor plan, it was positioned as an afterthought and felt very closed off. “We needed to rethink how this chain of rooms worked together,” Carman says. Her solution was to flip-flop the dining room with the third living space and transform the former dining area into a family room that opens to the kitchen. Carman brought on general contractor Dave LaBonte and senior project manager Pete Jendrzejek to take down the dividing wall between the new family room and cooking area, remove columns, add box beams and expand the kitchen window to bring in views of the backyard. The kitchen itself was divided into several small spaces, so much so that Carman and her team lovingly dubbed it the “Hansel and Gretel” kitchen. It was imperative to transform this oddly laid-out room into a space large enough to accommodate all of Irene’s cooking tools and gadgets. “When I thought about my dream home, it was always focused on the kitchen and what

192

that would include,” she says. Per Irene’s wish list, the new expanded space includes plenty of cabinetry, a large quartzite-topped island, a walk-in pantry and brass-and-wood shelving for displaying cookbooks and bakeware. As one might expect from food lovers, the couple frequently entertain. So, Carman conjured a bar room out of a dated, inefficient wine room. With its yew tree-inspired wallcovering and brass cabinetry, the new jewel-box cocktail area is the perfect finishing touch upon an abode geared toward hosting. “The house is a communal space where, whether you’re having one friend over for lunch or 30 over for a Super Bowl party, it’s functional,” Dan says. “You feel like you have space to move around. From the backyard to the family room to the dining room, it just flows.” Tapping into Irene’s preference for a comfortable but elevated design that doesn’t shy away from color—along with the existing high ceilings, ornate moldings and French doors—Carman envisaged an aesthetic akin to a European pied-à-terre. “We wanted to make it seem like this collected Parisian apartment,” she explains, “something you can stroll into that feels really casual, but every object is interesting and has a story, and it looks very fabulous, layered and interesting.” Instead of the traditional grays and blues of French interiors, Carman was a little more adventurous with color, opting for earthier tones. The dark olive kitchen cabinetry harmonizes with a terra-cotta-hued sofa in the family room and the greenery of the yard outside. Though every item is new, the varied textures— brushed metals, rustic zellige tiles, cane dining chairs—work together to foster a collected, livedin feel. Impressive light fixtures in the dining room, primary bedroom and family room add a pop of glamour. Carman takes great pleasure in seeing the family enjoy the renovated residence. “I want to create spaces that suit our clients,” she says. “Irene and her daughter both have the most beautiful red hair. When I see them running through their new green kitchen, I think, ‘Well, don’t you guys just look like models for this room?’ They seem perfectly at home.”

Designer Amy Carman used a variety of textures to give the family room a collected vibe. She paired a marble-and-brass end table and slate-topped coffee table—both by Four Hands—with a Lee Industries velvet sectional and Maiden Home shearling chair.

Mixed-media artist Sarah Leuchtner creates a connection point between craft and industry. W R I T T E N BY D E B O R A H B I S H O P | P H O T O G R A P H Y BY S A N DY N O T O

arah Leuchtner is not an artist who has ever limited herself to one medium. Ever since she was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she has roamed freely between the disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture and fiber art. For her recent series of two-sided works made of zip ties woven through chicken wire and framed by copper pipes, Leuchtner draws from all these modes of expression—and more. “At school there was a free area where you could both donate and take supplies,” shares Leuchtner of how the series began. She foraged a batch of zip ties, but they sat dormant in her studio for a couple of years. “I always keep a surplus of materials ready even if I don’t know what I’ll do with them,” the artist explains. It was when she looked at some chicken wire she also had on hand that the idea came to her. “The work took off from there,” she says. Created by threading individual ties through the mesh and zipping them closed, the compositions are smooth to the touch on one side, shaggy and tactile on the other. “The chicken wire provides a strong graphic presence that I can then layer,” says Leuchtner, who considers both sides simultaneously as she weaves. “I love using it as a structure. There isn’t really a front and back for me.” Not limited to prefab colors, Leuchtner painstakingly dyes her zip ties using the same pigments she does for her other works, including large-scale collages and paintings. She then plans out her composition in a small watercolor, her sole reference. While the crisp side has a pixelated aspect reminiscent of vintage video art, there is also a nod to homespun handicrafts. “It’s a cross between needlepoint and something more technological,” she says. “I like that the tactility humanizes technology.” While the compositions blur the line between figurative and abstract, they are evocative of the industrial Chicago cityscape that surrounds Leuchtner’s East Garfield Park studio—buildings, scaffolding, exposed pipes and beams, and the glowing neon sun as seen through her window. Many of the shapes that compel Leuchtner, which she pulls from vintage signage and iconography, also appear in her pieces. “I’m trying to create a language with these symbols,” she says. “I don’t want it to be as blatant as a smiley face emoji. I want a gray area to have the viewer question what they’re looking at.”

Artist Sarah Leuchtner creates watercolor works (left) as a jumping-off point for her large-scale collages (below) and woven zip tie sculptures (bottom, left). She dyes the plastic by hand to create the various colors seen in her work. “It’s an ongoing process of layering and building up the composition and depth,” she says.

Architecture: Garrett Harabedian, Northworks Architects + Planners Interior Design: Steve Somogyi and Filip Malyszko, Steve + Filip Design Home Builder: Steven Cordero, Giant Construction Group

O

ver time, well-loved homes become like characters in a novel. Each room turns a fresh page, revealing the personality quirks and precious memories imprinted by its occupants. New construction on the other hand, however beautiful, risks feeling blank, unmarked with any idiosyncrasies. For a Chicago couple planning to build a family house from scratch on a rare double lot in the tree-lined North Center neighborhood, it was important that this not be the case for their new residence. Their life was far too buoyant and colorful, overflowing with live piano music, bountiful dinners, and three children running indoors and out. Interior designers Steve Somogyi and Filip Malyszko understood the family’s wants intimately. Since meeting as neighbors in the same loft building 15 years ago, “they’ve become our longest-standing clients,” Malyszko says. As their fourth project together, this latest abode needed to transcend its new construction and “feel like it had been collected over time,” Somogyi adds. “We wanted to make sure that the house was representative of this young, happy family.” The designers found a like-minded partner in architect Garrett Harabedian, who understands that just because something is new doesn’t mean it can’t have soul. “We’re setting a stage for a story,” Harabedian muses, “creating a place where people live out their lives.” Joined by builder Steven Cordero and landscape architect Phil Rosborough, the team focused on inscribing warmth into every corner. Harabedian situated the dwelling toward the north side of the property, exposing the interior to abundant southern sunlight and giving Rosborough enough room to carve out ample stretches of grass for the children to play. The home itself has a “traditional form with a crisp, modern sensibility,” the architect says, pointing to the sloped gabled roofline, dormer windows, brick chimneys and cement board siding. Personal touches abound upon walking through the front door, where a hand-fabricated stained glass address bar by Drehobl Art Glass Co.—a century-old local workshop—marks the threshold. The generous foyer and elongated hallway introduce many of the materials and

206

hues that mark the vocabulary of the abode: knotted white oak floors, colorful runners and wood planks stained to recall silvered barnwood on the ceiling. “And instead of painting the trim a conventional crisp white, we chose an almond color, which gives the home a more historic, aged appearance,” Malyszko says. Eschewing fussy formalities, the layout branches off into spaces built for the family’s specific lifestyle. “It was really important that they have rooms they would actually use,” Somogyi explains. There’s a dedicated music room wrapped in an acoustic-softening wallcovering where the family gathers around the piano. The husband’s office doubles as a listening lounge, featuring custom built-in shelving for his expansive vinyl record collection. In the basement, the team abandoned plans for a conventional rumpus room in favor of a small skate park for the kids. The great room serves as the entertaining hub, where guests can casually circulate through the combined kitchen, dining and living areas while enjoying food and conversation. Each space is grounded with solid, substantial furniture made for sharing, from the living room’s deep-seated sectional to the dining table long enough to accommodate any surprise visitors who may appear. Layers of natural textiles, as seen in the vintage wool rugs, linen drapery and plush upholstery, swaddle the home in comfort. An eclectic mix of patterns and artisanal materials tie everything together. See the many hand-painted and hand-glazed tiles lining the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. The abundance of botanical wallpaper, from the mudroom’s climbing vines to the powder room’s blooming florals, nods to the wife’s enduring love of nature. The designers also incorporated heritage plaid fabrics for a cozy nostalgia. These diverse patterns live side by side, as “we didn’t want it to feel so color coordinated or prescribed,” Malyszko says. “We were big on the prints and colors being like second cousins rather than brother and sister.” The palette in turn feels rich but lived-in: sage greens, denim blues and earthy ochre yellows. All together, the home feels like a fully fleshedout protagonist. And for the designers, there is no greater pleasure than helping clients chronicle their lives. “It’s about their personal connections and their connection with their cherished items,” says Somogyi of their driving inspiration. “We wanted to tell their story in their environment.”
