urday May 19th, 2018, Prince Harry will marry Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel. Each invitation has been printed in gold and black using American ink on English card, then burnished and gilded. The cake will be lemon and elderflower incorporating the flavors of spring, but the biggest fashion statement remains a mystery, ….the dress. Taking inspiration from the wedding, Luxe Lifestyle Magazine’s, Allison Parker chats with Charleston wedding designer Emily Kowarski and Susannah Pask shares the top 2018 wedding dresses on the runway. We chat with the experts from We Tie the Knots on the details and planning of a wedding, and get expert advice from Hadley Perry on antique engagement rings. good reads BERNICE ABBOTT: A LIFE IN PHOTOGRAPHY Tulia Van Haaften

From celebrities in Roaring Twenties Paris to rapidly changing 1930s New York to key scientific moments in the 1950s, Berenice Abbott made images that shaped how we still see her world. Photography curator Van Haaften’s biography of Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) rightly positions her as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Raised by a single mother, Abbot experienced an unhappy childhood. She moved to New York City to study sculpture and was drawn to the subcultures and bohemian literary figures of Greenwich Village. Living in Paris, she discovered photography and worked as Man Ray’s assistant; she also met the documentary photographer Eugène Atget shortly before his death in 1925 and spent the next several years promoting his work. Abbott returned to New York and began a long-term documentary project on Manhattan, culminating in 1939’s Changing New York. Van Haaften spent several years interviewing Abbott in her Maine home; the result is an intimate view of Abbott’s approach to photography as well as her personal life, including her 30-year relationship with art critic Elizabeth McCausland.

MOTHER AND CHILD CLAIBORNE SWANSON FRANK Assouline

In the latest body of work by author and photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank, the artist set out to explore what modern motherhood means in the 21st century. Turning her lens on 70 iconic families of mothers and children from such celebrated names as Delfina Figueras, Carolina Herrera, Lauren Santo Domingo, Anne Vyalitsyna, Aerin Lauder, and Patti Hansen, Swanson Frank’s stunning portraits capture the emotional bonds and beauty that frame the primal relationship of a mother and her child. Complementing her work is a series of questions-and-answers, in which Swanson Frank delicately tasks each mother to look within themselves and express what being a mother truly means to them. Their answers, while exceedingly thoughtful and introspective, are also amusing, fascinating, and moving. Each one of these deeply intimate and stunning portraits will captivate and inspire readers as they embark on this profound journey that reminds us all of the power of motherhood and the great gift of love.

Wedding Etiquette in the

W

Digital Age By Sharon Schweitzer

edding etiquette has certainly evolved since your parents tied the knot. For those living in the digital age, it raises a number of questions regarding so-

cial media, online presence, and modern-day communication. While certain traditions stand the test of time, online wedding etiquette is a whole new set of modern manners for both the happy couple and their guests. Whether you’re planning your perfect day, or are an honored attendee, these five modern manners will help you navigate the new rules of wedding etiquette in today’s digital age.

Leave picture taking to the photographer during the ceremony, and focus on the beautiful bride, the groom’s smile, and the joy of two families becoming one. Remember to stay out of the photographer’s way when they’re trying to capture a certain angle or special moment, as they’re the one the couple has paid to record their special day. Taking photos at the reception is fine, but make sure that you’re not spending every moment snapchatting the event instead of enjoying the celebration.

Destination Weddings: Destination weddings are a wonderful getaway for the couple and their guests. They come with a host of questions regarding when and where to ship wedding gifts and whether the travel budget cuts into gift spending. Couples, make it clear on your wedding website where and when guests may ship any gifts to alleviate undue stress. An Offering For Your Beloved by Leslie Green

What do all of these questions have in common? What cures insomnia? Why trust at all? What do people want in life more than anything else? What one thing do I wish most for my children? What one thing do I wish most for anyone I love?

20

May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Drumroll please…. Answer: Inner Peace! What?? Not sexy enough for you? Not exciting enough? Maybe not even exciting enough to warrant an “!” Or earth shattering enough to wake you in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, screaming, “I need more peace in my life!” No. That’s not how peace rolls. Peace is one of those things that falls in the “out of sight – out of mind” category, similar to the foundation of your house. But without it, well, your house won’t last very long as the strong, stable structure you’ve grown to rely on to support your outer needs. Peace, my friends, is what supports your inner-most needs. And for that reason, I find it sexy and exciting as hell, regardless of its knack for subtlety.

Here’s What I Know about Inner Peace: peace is a present-moment-thing, it occurs in the here and now therefore, don’t go chasing after peace, it isn’t a good idea since it’s not a future event similarly, you may have had peace in your past, but if you don’t feel it now, in your present, there’s no use longing or lamenting, you’re just wasting your time when you feel peace in your present, acknowledge it, honor it — find ways to celebrate it the more you trust yourself, the more you will experience peace my belief that the Divine lives within each of us, allows me to trust with all of my heart and mind — bringing more inner peace in my life. This can work for you, too. peace and inner conflict cannot exist simultaneously peace does not necessarily mean quiet once I learned how trust works, peace entered my life, and the insomnia I battled off and on for nearly 20 years exited my life.

Peace Can Look Different For Each of Us So what exactly does peace look like? Feel like? I’m sure you’ve felt it before. But to describe it, I’d say for me: Looking deeply into my eyes in the mirror and seeing someone who has learned to appreciate her outer beauty, as well as her inner beauty feels like peace. Sipping my cuppa tea with a still mind, I feel peace. Being gentle with myself, especially since I would never invite someone back into my life who spoke as harshly to me as I sometimes speak to myself. When I get it right, and am gentle with myself, I feel peace. Observing the rise and fall of my boys’ torsos as they sleep, and realizing I’ve unconsciously been matching their breathing, feels like peace. The expression on my yellow Lab’s face 99.9% of the time looks like peace. Ultimately, inner peace feels like a calming in your heart. That’s what I know about peace. That’s how peace looks and feels to me. Desirous, grounding, alive, freeing, and yes, even sexy and exciting, all at the same time. How about you? What do you know about peace? How does it look and feel in your life? If you’re running low on examples, and this article has brought to your attention that you very seldom feel peace in your life, start small: maybe sit still and watch the rise and fall of your abdomen, and do nothing else, think nothing else. Simply observe the rise and fall for 60 seconds. You, yes you, as busy as you are, have 1 minute.

Love yourself enough to support your inner-most needs by offering your Beloved (YOU) 60 seconds of inner peace right now. May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

ith Miles of sparkling shoreline, world class spas and lush green

fairways, Ponte Vedra, Florida’s Historic Coast caters to the cultured traveler. Luxury is defined in many ways and Ponte Vedra is sure to fill them. Nestled along the Atlantic Ocean and a short drive from Jacksonville you’ll find the Sawgrass Marriot Golf Resort & Spa. Also, home to The Players Championship - TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach is a must visit for any golf enthusiast and their family. Nearly three dozen Tour players— including stars such as Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk and Fred Funk—make their homes in the area. This means that on any given day any number of them could be spotted here. It is the only public or resort golf course where this can happen and truly unique . TPC Sawgrass partnership with the Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa allows guests to stay at the home of THE PLAYERS Championship. The Sawgrass Golf Resort and Spa offers a full-service luxury experience just steps from one of the most noted golf courses in the world.

Experience what it is like to walk in the shoes of a PGA player. Play two championship courses, including the famed Stadium course, with the use of a personal locker in the TOUR Player locker room. The impressive practice range, spreads across twenty acres. It includes a two-sided all-grass range, three shortgame areas, four putting greens manicured to near-Tour standards, and a state-of-the-art learning center called the Tour Academy. Although the resident pros hit balls primarily at the back end of the range, which is reserved for

them, they sometimes move up to the front to practice. When visitors arrive at the range, they’re greeted by TPC staff members, who hand them fresh towels, bottles of water, and introduce them to their caddies. They also offer to use rangefinders to measure yardages to various target flags. It’s a memorable experience. If you prefer to spend the day at the spa, The Sawgrass Spa offers an oasis of wellness. Surrounded by 15 acres of winding lagoons and lush landscaping, the relaxing environment offers a full menu of treatments. You will truly feel refreshed.

For Beautiful Skin A Body Brushing Workout that Works by Teresa Tapp - creator of T-Tapp

6. Increased metabolic function 7. Improved body shaping inch loss 8. Helped decrease inflammation 9. Improved skin’s ability to tighten, even with extreme weight loss And it seemed like everyone who tried it received visible, lasting results. Dry body brushing has been promoted for decades all over the world and offers multiple benefits such as: 1. Stimulate blood and lymph circulation.

4. Make you feel energized 5. Improve skin texture to help you look younger When I learned about body brushing in Europe, while working in the high fashion industry, I was amazed at what a difference it made for my skin but wondered “what if” I combined my method of full fiber muscle and fascia activation at the same time? My theory was it could improve the skin’s ability to tighten, as well as accelerate the body’s ability to reshape and eliminate toxins. Well.... the combination of maximizing muscle and fascia activation, along with focus on body alignment and weight distribution while brushing

in a different sequence, delivered even more results as follows: 32

hormones, as well as anyone looking to lose a lot of weight without saggy skin ... it worked. Why? Because they were “exercising” their skin!

Nutrients In — Trash Out Basically doing repetitive brushing strokes increases blood flow to the surface of your skin, which in addition to removing dead cells, increases the availability of necessary nutrients so it can repair and rebuild. And since you are using T-Tapp techniques to maintain muscle and fascia activation while brushing, you are also optimizing your body’s ability to take the “trash” out (ie - eliminate toxins)

No need for supplements either Although I believe that supplementation with Premium Blended Alfalfa and Fibertox can help accelerate skin tightening results, they are not necessary! For example take a look at this picture of Lisa Miller and I. It’s hard to imagine, but she lost 100 lbs and doesn’t have any saggy skin. Not bad for a mom who gave birth 6 times and has 3 grandchildren! Her picture easily shows how fit and smooth her skin is but take a look at this recent interview of her wearing a bikini with confidence. She accomplished this by doing T-Tapp Total and CRT body brushing workouts on a daily basis without supplements due to allergies. Best of all, she has kept it off for 18 years and although she no longer does complete T-Tapp workouts every day, she never misses the opportunity to do the CRT body brushing workout every morning because “it just feels so good”. Similar results happened for Linda Osmond too. As a mom of 5 with hypothyroid issues- grandmother of 3, she lost 75 lbs and went from size 16 to size 4 without saggy skin by

doing T-Tapp Total and CRT body brushing workouts. Plus she has kept it off for over 10 years and this picture of her in a bikini was taken in July 2017 at age 54. She also gives credit to the combination for helping her abdominal stretch marks greatly diminish.

3. It improves fascia fitness without any trauma to tissue (no bruising) 4. It increases aerobic heart rate while brushing which can improve oxygenation 5. It stimulates left brain-right brain coordination Basic Outline for the CRT Skin Tightening Supreme Sequence: 1. Start brushing the palm of your left hand, up your arm, through the arm pit and across your chest towards your heart 2. Your weight should be shifted into your heels while brushing 3. Your opposite knee, of side being brushed, should maintain a constant shift outward to create full fiber activation of all muscles that attach from your knee-to-ankle and knee-to-hip 4. Once you finish brushing your left upper body, repeat the same sequence on the right 5. Then start brushing the sole of your left foot (elevated is best), work up your leg, through your left groin and finish around your left hip and buttocks 6. In addition to adding “jazz toes” on your left foot while brushing the left leg, make sure to shift and maintain your right knee outward and tailbone tucked as best possible for optimal results. 7. Once you finish brushing your left leg, repeat the same sequence on the right 8. Finish with abdominal strokes up towards your heart, at angles and around your waist. 9. Then repeat strokes on areas of concern, as desired.

SHOWSTOPPERS. In July 2017, on the occasion of its fourth Grand Exhibition, Patek Philippe launched the world premiere of the 5531R World Time Minute Repeater, a limited series of 10 watches. Today, this model forms an integral part of the brand’s collection. It combines two grandes complications dear to Patek Philippe: the minute repeater and world time. As a result, this new timepiece boasts a world time minute repeater that always chimes the local time wherever you are, unlike other watches of this type, which chime the time in your home country. Equipped with the new R 27 HU caliber, entirely manufactured in-house, the wearer of this masterpiece can set the hour strike to the nearest second, using the 24-hour display of the world time mechanism. Beyond the sheer watchmaking achievement, the process itself has been patented. And for the first time on a Patek Philippe minute repeater, the gongs are affixed to the case middle, not to the movement plate, resulting in incomparable acoustic quality.

Giberg Haute Horlogerie was founded in Biel by Andreas Altmann, and designs refined timepieces that combine luxury watchmaking technique with sculptural art. The Swiss designer revealed his first timekeeping piece at Baselworld, an elegant ode to femininity with a delicate, Russian-inspired name: Niura. The unveiling of this design is the first chapter in the history of the Giberg Haute Horlogerie brand. The focal point of this miniature artwork is the manufacture calibre created especially for, and by, the brand. This double-barrel flying tourbillon ensures unwavering time-keeping precision. Encrusted with 2,156 diamonds, this dazzling watch is a nod to a glorious age in which jewellery fused both art and breath-taking beauty, mirroring the lifestyles of the times. This timepiece draws on high-end jewellery to infuse the act of time-keeping with a sense of poetic whimsy.

A spring breeze is blowing through Harry Winston. Novel color combinations and fresh design elements are captivating a new generation of women who value not only the everyday practicality of a trusted timepiece but also the extraordinary diamonds that define Harry Winston’s iconic jewelry collections. The latest Harry Winston Emerald timepiece is an ode to femininity, with a dainty 18K white gold case and sophisticated double tour soft pink strap. Four pink sapphires and 108 brilliant-cut diamonds are set against mother-of-pearl in a timepiece that glows with the utmost fire and light. May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

Feathers, bows, capes, cut outs, netting, illusion bodices, dramatic backs and intricate beadwork? Designers at the 2018 New York Bridal Markets show how far the simple white wedding dress has come. designed by Monique Huillier

S

omething has happened to the simple white wedding sheath – and it has led to revolutionary changes in the wedding dress design busi-

ness. Far from boring, wedding dresses have taken on a “designer” look, becoming not just a wear-it-for-oneday-and-store-it-away affair, but a style statement, a reflection of the bride’s personal taste; a dress that, yes, may actually be adapted for future use. Who knew? The wedding dress has turned into a designer’s dream. With dramatic looks, overlays, beading, feathers and sexy illusion fabrics, the bride can express herself in true contemporary designer style. Forget the 7th Avenue mass-produced sea of me-too white wedding dresses that all look alike. Some of the “hautest” of haute couturiers now have a wedding collection, as they dress their clients from teen years through marriage in custom-made couture to make them look special as they walk down the aisle. The 2018 New York Spring and Fall Bridal Markets were no exception as designers continued to push the design envelope by marrying designer runway looks with bridal tradition – or in some cases, not at all. While May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

many showed sheer capes with beading, Elisabetta Polignano stuck to her Italian haute couture roots with elegant, ruffled netting and highly structured silhouettes, giving her brides a look of sophisticated royalty. Monique Lhuillier, on the other hand, kept things simpler but dressed her gowns in a flurry of feathers or net overlays for extra visual interest. As did many other designers, she also showed dresses in non-traditional colors like lattes, blush tones and all-over florals. Who says a wedding dress has to be white? After all, Chrissy Teigen wore red to her wedding, Liberty Ross wore black and Cynthia Nixon wore green. Designer Hayley Paige’s dresses are all about freshness and femininity. She’s become one of the designer darlings of the long-running TV hit show, “Say Yes to The Dress” and her frequent appearances have given her dresses new star status. One of the highlights of her Spring 2018 collection, “Mercury” is a flowing tulle with textural warped embroidery, jewel neckline and open keyhole back. It has a cascading embroidered skirt with horsehair trim. “Andi” is an ivory Mikado and tulle ball gown with a spaghetti strap deep sweetheart neckline, ivory net side cut out and

a cascading banded tulle skirt. Her look is new and young without being overdone or visually demanding. It was all about the back for many designers. After all, that’s what your guests will be looking at as you walk down the aisle and say your vows. With more than a touch of drama, excitement, beading and clever draping, the back of the wedding dress has become as important as the front. Maybe more so. You also want to look at structural integrity when purchasing an antique or vintage ring. Make sure there aren’t cracks in the shank, and that the diamonds are not loose. D

ancing with the Stars of Charlotte to Benefit the Pink House—which took place at Knight Theater to a sold-out house—had a lot going for it: excitement, glitz, fancy footwork AND an important cause. And now, an additional claim this fundraiser boasts is that it is one of the fastest-growing fundraising events in the city, having gone

from an audience of 440 in 2016 to selling out the entire Knight Theater of 1100 seats the same day they went on sale. This year’s event raised a record $682,743. That’s roughly $250,000 more than last year’s event and brings the total donations in 3 years to $1.55 million. The show is modeled after the popular Dancing with the Stars television show. Local stars, paired with professional dancers, each learn and perform a ballroom dance routine that is scored by world class judges from the competitive dance world while audience members vote for their favorite Star by making donations to Carolina Breast Friends. Each dollar donated is equivalent to one vote. WBTV’s Molly Grantham and former NFL star DeAngelo Williams—both of whom have lost close family members to breast cancer—masterfully emcee the show. At the end of the night, a mirror ball trophy is given to the top fundraiser, the biggest crowd pleaser, and the highest-scoring dancer. Another special feature of the event is that each year it is held in memory of someone the city has lost to breast cancer. This year’s event was dedicated to Elizabeth Ratcliffe Rayburn, a dynamic wife and mother who lost her life to breast cancer at the age of 56. Her son, Joe Rayburn, danced in her honor as one of this year’s Stars. Said one audience member, “I love that in addition to this being a knock-out show, you never forget that it’s about an important cause and need. It’s in memory of someone who died of breast cancer, and it’s about supporting the needs of so many people still struggling through the cancer journey.”

She Said Yes,

AM I LOSING MY SON by Debra Kennedy

T

o say the Mother/Son relationship is a beautiful union is an understatement until he meets his “Forever Loveʼ and you share (actually take a back seat ) in your sonʼs life now. From this moment on, his special moments, decisions and life

changes are all couple discussions and three is a crowd. You know the saying, “A Son is a Son until He Takes a Wife.” Fortunately, we absolutely adore his bride-to-be, Katie and her parents. Yes, there are horror stories out there on this very topic and I do know how fortunate we are. Not only does Katie complete Austin, our families vacation together, hang out and spend holidays together. The million dollar question is: Will that be true during the end moments of the planning process?

WHAT IS A MOG TO DO I must admit that being Mother of the Groom is a difficult role. My mother always called me a leader however my family calls me bossy which means I have a dominant personality. I was fully prepared to take a back seat to all wedding decisions, plans, and lifetime moments during

OUR ONE BIG DUTY – PLAN THE REHEARSAL DINNER On the bright side, the role of MOB is effortless and magical. Wait, I have a Groomzilla who wants to be involved in every single detail. Austin wants his rehearsal dinner to be spectacular, and I am expected to read his mind on what exactly “spectacular” means. He is very quick to point out what he does not like and way too busy to send pictures or ideas of what his vision acMay/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

tually is. For those Moms out there that have sons, you will understand that they often times grunt and we are expected to understand the meaning of these grunts? I remind myself daily that I am his Super MOG and my role is to interpret the grunts with an optimistic smile. After countless venue visits, we selected the location for the big night before the Royal Event. The most important piece of advice here is know your budget. Equally important is being comfortable with the Sales and Catering Manager or Event Planner. DO NOT be embarrassed to say, “that is out of my budget” and have a few alternative suggestions offered. I was on top of this and had everything nailed down 9 months early. All was perfect until the final details meeting. The venue Space is perfect for ambiance, food, and the overall tone for Austinʼs vision and not so perfect for speeches and privacy. How did I let this slip through the cracks? I am responsible for one task and I cannot fail. Super MOG takes over (after many many yoga breaths,) we discuss options. Options “always” mean extra funding and sticking to the budget is always the challenge. How did I handle this situation? You will find out in the “Big Reveal.”

66

May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

MY ONE BIG SPECIAL MOMENT WITH AUSTIN Austin and I would dance around the house to Mustang Sally when he was a little boy as he would put his little feet on top of mine and we would glide around forever. I was elated when he reached out to me for my suggestions on what song we would dance to. Too mushy Mom, Too slow Mom, Too Sad Mom. Isnʼt this about the words of the song meaning something? Isnʼt this about that special bond that will never be broken between a mother and her son? No, actually it is about whatever Austin wants to dance to because the moment belongs to him. What song did we choose? Yes, you will find out in the “Big Reveal.”

WHAT IS A GIRL TO WEAR As protocol would have it, the Mother of Bride selects her dress first and then and only then can I start to look for my dress. Once again I must brag that my bestie Mother of the Bride was a jewel and wanted me to wear whatever

I wanted. Honestly, she is a beauty and looks amazing in everything she wears. Should I have started working out with a personal trainer 6 months ago? Should I have started my clean eating plan 9 months ago? Well, I did not and everything that I loved was sleeveless which does not work if you do not do the above 2 important steps. I did find a dress I love and at a “Steal of a Deal.” Honestly, I was more concerned with the perfect timing of getting injections and laser treatments because at a certain age the camera does not lie, and I can angle the way I stand in pictures to look smaller. Feeling and looking younger will certainly make the dress perfect! Yes, gotta wait for the “Big Reveal.”

DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS At the end of the day, it really comes down to details. Being organized, finding out what the bride and groom really want and what is important to them for the rehearsal dinner and making it all happen with a loving smile. That is how a Super MOG rolls. Yes, there are lots of details and I will share all of them with you in the “Big Reveal” but knowing Austin and Katie love each other more than life, and I am gaining a daughter that I absolutely adore, makes everything perfect, just as it should be.

Interesting sandwich options include the Calabash Chicken (you thought I was going to say shrimp, didn’t you?), the Chicago-ish Fried Bologna (with Chicago hot dog style condiments such as celery salt and mustard), and one I am definitely going to try the next time: the Lobster Roll. There are only a few places in the Charlotte area to even get a lobster roll but some of the restaurants that serve it don’t quite capture that great New England flavor. Next time my buttery friend, next time. Moving to the main course Hello, Sailor makes good on its name by having predominately seafood options, though, there seem to always be a couple non-seafood choices, in this case Baby Back Pork Ribs with a mustard BBQ sauce and a Bone-In Kansas City Strip Steak with parsley and a horseradish sauce. For those who want more of a surf and turf kind of experience, Hello Sailor does have a platter that might work for you – It is the No. 2 platter (there is a Number 1 but that one is all seafood) and it consists of Baby Back Pork Ribs and Carolina Calabash Shrimp served with two sides. What we chose were the Whole Flounder and the King Crab Broiled with Ghee and Chili Salt for me.

Savor

Two make-ahead breakfast dishes that are equally impressive as they are flavorful. by Jessica Bently

A sweet Mother’s Day breakfast

OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS: • 1 loaf French Bread torn into 1 inch pieces, about 5 cups • 5 Eggs • 1 cup Milk • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract • 2/3 cup Brown Sugar • 1 tsp. Cinnamon • Dash of Nutmeg • Fresh Berries & Syrup, for topping • Powdered Sugar, for topping (optional) • Syrup, for topping (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1.

Prepare a large, greased baking dish.

2. Tear the French Bread into small pieces. Note: This recipe goes from a 9 to a glorious 10 when you let the bread sit out for a few days to get crusty. If you don’t have a few days, pop it in a 350F oven for 10 minutes so it develops a nice crunch on the exterior. Then let cool and pull apart into pieces. 3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the Eggs, Milk, and Vanilla Extract. 4. In a small mixing bowl, stir together the Brown Sugar, Cinnamon and dash of Nutmeg. 5. On the bottom of the greased baking dish, sprinkle half of the Brown Sugar mixture. (this creates a gooey, awesome crust on the bottom).

6. Cover with torn French Bread and then sprinkle with the remaining Brown Sugar mixture. 7. Pour over the Milk mixture and cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. 8. In the morning, preheat oven to 350F. 9. Bake, covered, for 30 minutes. 10. As the French Toast is baking, wash the fresh fruit and set in a serving bowl. 11. Uncover, and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until browned. 12. Serve immediately with fresh fruit, powdered sugar and syrup.

Wedding Dress Bliss: An Appointment with

Emily Kotarski By Allison Parker

“Your dress should be one of a kind as no two brides are ever the same”- Emily Kotarski The designer knows how special the wedding dress is to a bride. Brides are coming to know that an appointment with Emily Kotarski is the first, very important step in making their wedding dress visions a reality. She is proud that brides are discovering her talents. “I’ve had brides come to see me from locally in Charleston to as far away as Houston, Texas. “Her dedication to personalization and individuality for each bride is impeccable and the word is spreading fast. Talented and flexible, Emily can accommodate the unpredictable as well. She shares, “I try to schedule my appointments within a reasonable timeframe to allow for production timing and spacing, but I’ve had situations where a bride was in town for only 24 hours and desperately wanted to meet me for a custom dress- we found a way to work it out and make it happen. I was able to get her in at 5 PM and we worked through a 1 ½ hour appointment.”

couture hand sewing details. The schooling allowed her to make invaluable connections in the fashion world that she utilizes today in her business. For example, she was able to make contacts for the best factory operations such as the one she favors in Atlanta. As well, she was able to discover sources for her embellishments and materials such as silks and satins used in her dress de-signs. Her embellishments are sourced from Israel, France and Italy. She proudly explains, “I only use 100% silk; some others may say ‘silk’ but they are actually using a blended polyester type material.”

Emily’s interest in fashion and wedding dresses started with her schooling in New York. she studied at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York City. Emily had the opportunity to hone in on her passion for creating one of a kind articles of clothing. Emily’s background showcases internships at Anna Sui as well as Fabiola Arias – here she apprenticed in the ma-nipulation of fabric treatments including such techniques as beading, applique and May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com

We always allow time for this as well and a bit of room in fabric if the opposite happens and the dress needs let out a bit.” Emily’s studio is very open and inviting to brides to be. There is a beautiful bar area for cham-pagne to sip on while perusing the various sample pieces and collections. As well, the studio includes the actual work room where actual work pieces are laid out and worked on for custom-ers. Emily’s work is as unique as the brides themselves. She creates a dress to fit with whatever genre the bride has planned for her special day. There are no confines or limits to the possibili-ties. When asked about some of the different styles she has created, Emily shares, “I’ve done many eclectic requests such as a bride who was eloping and

An appointment with Emily starts with a phone call or email to set the initial meeting time. Emily likes to get to know her customers beyond just the dress. She likes to embrace their personali-ties and interests and wrap it all together in their dress desires. Typically, Emily uses a ‘mock up’ of the dress in muslin to get the basic style and shape tailored. She has various pieces and samples within the show room to use as demos. You may mix or match different skirts with varying style tops or bodices to give complete artistic freedom. There can be several fittings be-fore the final style is sent to the factory to be created in the actual silk, satin or other chosen ma-terial. Final embellishments such as lacing is done at the shop and by hand. Timing for a custom-made dress is typically 6-9 months, however, Emily notes “8-9

The dresses are finalized with lacing and more details than the Signature Collection. Emily describes a unique dress within her Precious Metals collection, “The dress is a blue “Jade”, a deep color, that is a showstopper, a beauty… it’s very popular and has been order in silver as well as white.” Emily’s third collection, Dreams, was inspired by the 1970’s rock and roll culture. “I named it after the Fleetwood Mac song, “Dreams”, and it is edgy with more volume in the sleeves and various details beyond that in Precious Metals.

In this time, she has added an assistant, Sara. Sara joined Emily in October of 2017. Business has started moving quickly after she completed her first bridal dress design in the summer of 2017. Ron first met Secretariat in Florida, and the trainer Lucien Laurin asked him to ride Secretariat and tell him what he thought. He said it was a dream come true. Secretariat was a very smart horse and a very gentle kind horse. He learned quickly . Ron said he was the greatest horse he had ever seen. He could train like no other horse. He was strong and tough. Hollie Hughes who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1973 and had trained the winner of the 1916 Kentucky Derby told him before the Belmont “Son, you’re riding the greatest horse that ever lived. Believe me, I know. I’ve seen them all. Man o’ War has nothing over this horse. Finally, he said, “Don’t

The trainer was concerned he was doing too much, but Ron had a feeling that the horse could handle it. Secretariat was getting stronger and stronger all the time. Ron was so certain they were going to win he said if he got beat in the Belmont he was going to quit riding. When the gate opened at the Belmont I just took my time, letting Secretariat get his feet under him. When he saw the gap ahead closing I let the horse go. I, did not want to get trapped. He had control of the race and won by an astounding 31 lengths! Secretariat is still to this day the greatest horse that ever lived.

• Two weeks later, he broke another record at the Preakness stakes finishing in 1:53 flat. • The week before the Belmont, Secretariat was featured on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. • He won Belmont with another record time of 2:24 for 1.5 miles and defeated the other horses with a staggering 31 length lead. • In 1974 Secretariat was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, receiving many honors and distinctions. • When Secretariat passed a necropsy was performed in 1989 finding he had a heart weighing approximately 22 pounds. This is twice the size of an average horse.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he Players Championship held at the TPC Sawgrass is the first and most unique course to be built with the spectators and fans in mind. It is a unique lifestyle experience. Designed by the

then PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Berman on 415 acres of wooded wetlands that he purchased for a $1. The Players Stadium course debuted in 1982. The TPC Sawgrass was built and based on a few unique concepts. One it would be host to The Players Championship and be owned by the PGA Tour players. The course would be accessible to all golf fans. Prior to the construction most great tournaments were held at private clubs, making it difficult for an average fan to ever have the opportunity to play. The course would be a great design and be the first “stadium Course” for the fan experience. With this in mind key locations were designed around the 1st, 10th, 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th greens. These features would include large sloping mounds up to 30 feet high so for the first time thousands of fans would have unobstructed views of the player. Today that swampland is breathtaking. And what an experience it is. It is the place to see and be seen. It has evolved into a fabulous event for the whole family. There are mixologists on sight creating unique and exotic libations. There are celebrity Chef’s on hand for the epicurean. There is wine, beer and even a tailor on sight. May/June 2018 | www.LuxeLifestyleMag.com
