LAND OF ENDLESS LIGHT: LUXURY AND STILLNESS BENEATH ICELAND’S MIDNIGHT SUN

SCANDINAVIAN STILLNESS: SWEDISH WELLNESS UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN
When summer settles over Sweden, it doesn’t roar to life — it unfolds, softly and slowly. The midnight sun casts a golden light across forests and lakes, stretching the day into twilight and inviting you to linger longer, breathe deeper, and reconnect with yourself. In the country’s west and north, this light is not only a seasonal marvel but a mindset: a time to reset. While travelers chase fire and ice in nearby lands, Sweden whispers a different kind of magic — one steeped in stillness, ritual, and sublime simplicity.
Here, wellness is more than luxury; it is a heritage, quietly refined through centuries of nature-centric living. From the heritage bathhouses of Gothenburg to a silent hotel immersed in Arctic wilderness, Scandinavia’s answer to light-filled luxury is one of reflection, rejuvenation, and recalibration.

THE SWEDISH SPA RENAISSANCE: HAGABADET GROUP, GOTHENBURG
Hagabadet Haga
With roots dating back to 1876, Hagabadet Haga is a wellness sanctuary nestled within one of Gothenburg’s most iconic Art Nouveau buildings. From the moment you enter, the ornate details and soothing ambiance signal that you’re somewhere extraordinary. These historic baths feature a symphony of warm pools, dedicated swimming lanes, and traditional hot sauna experiences. Quiet relaxation areas with lounge and rocking chairs invite you to slow down and simply be.

The spa’s extensive treatment menu includes massages, facials, couples massages, and pregnancy-friendly therapies, offering options for every wellness need. Guests can also enjoy a lighter meal from the cozy garden café and join daily yoga and fitness classes. Whether you’re floating in warm water or centering yourself during a yoga flow, Hagabadet Haga offers a rare kind of calm — the kind that feels timeless.

Hagabadet Drottningtorget
In the heart of Gothenburg, Hagabadet Drottningtorget is a steamy city-centre oasis infused with mysticism and magic. Here, every detail is designed to awaken the senses and restore the body. Playful water features, softly lit ambiance, and restorative treatments come together to form an immersive wellness escape. With more than fifty weekly classes, the spa emphasizes movement and
mindfulness. Expect yoga fusion sessions that challenge and center, complemented by spa rituals like seaweed baths and therapies using Kerstin Florian products. Indoor pools and dedicated relaxation areas complete the experience. For travelers navigating the pulse of the city, this sanctuary offers a powerful reminder to pause, exhale, and recharge.

Hagabadet Älvstranden
Hagabadet Älvstranden is a serene escape that embodies Swedish wellness at its most tranquil. The spa’s architecture blends natural materials with clean design, creating a quiet space to reflect and reconnect. Guests can move at their own rhythm between warm swimming pools, jacuzzi baths, infrared saunas, and soothing rain showers.

Relaxation areas with comfortable lounge chairs encourage long, unhurried rest. With a holistic focus, the spa also offers a range of massages and guided yoga sessions designed to support a healthy and harmonious life. Whether visiting solo or with a loved one, Hagabadet Älvstranden invites you to experience the restorative power of presence in a space designed for renewal.

INTENTIONAL SILENCE: PEACE & QUIET HOTEL, JOKKMOKK
In the far north of Sweden, nestled within the wild beauty of Jokkmokk, Peace & Quiet Hotel offers guests a unique immersion in silence, nature, and reflection. Surrounded by ancient forests, shimmering lakes, and the occasional dance of the Northern Lights, this hotel is designed for those seeking total recalibration.
Rooms are minimalist and elegant, allowing the landscape to take center stage. Large windows frame uninterrupted views, while cozy interiors provide warmth and comfort. Each stay is

enriched by personalized hospitality and a curated list of seasonal experiences: cryotherapy, Siberian sauna tents, snowshoe walks, reindeer sled tours, and the culturally rich Sápmi Experience, which offers insight into the Indigenous Sámi traditions of the region.
Here, silence is not emptiness — it’s a sacred space for reconnection. Whether soaking in a hot sauna after a beautiful hike or capturing long-exposure photographs of the long summer Lights, guests are encouraged to slow down, listen, and feel.
MIDNIGHT MOMENTS: A RITUAL OF LIGHT
In the gentle arms of Sweden’s midnight sun, time stretches and slows. It is here that wellness returns to its roots — not in opulence, but in presence. Whether soaking in the healing waters of Gothenburg’s Hagabadet spas, or walking silently through the forests of Jokkmokk, Scandinavia invites you to reimagine what it means to feel well.
Let the light linger. Let the silence speak. Let these Nordic lands become your sanctuary — where the sun never truly sets, and wellness isn’t an indulgence, but a way of life.
NORTHERN LIGHT, LOCAL SOUL: A CONVERSATION WITH HELGA BJÖRK JÓSEFSDÓTTIR
GENERAL MANAGER OF ICELAND
PARLIAMENT HOTEL AND REYKJAVIK KONSULAT HOTEL, CURIO COLLECTION BY HILTON

In the land of fire and ice, where tradition meets innovation and nature takes center stage, luxury hospitality demands more than elegance—it calls for authenticity, resilience, and a deep connection to place. Few embody this spirit better than Helga Björk Jósefsdóttir, General Manager of both the Iceland Parliament Hotel and the Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton.
With a career shaped by passion for service and national pride, Helga leads two distinct yet complementary properties in the heart of Reykjavik. In this exclusive interview, she shares her path to leadership, the challenges of managing in a remote Nordic capital, and the powerful legacy of Icelandic culture that shapes every guest experience.
You’ve built an impressive leadership career within Iceland’s luxury hotel scene. Could you walk us through your path to becoming General Manager of two Curio Collection by Hilton properties?
My journey began with a deep passion for service and pride in Icelandic culture. I started in guest services and worked my way through various operational roles, always seeking to understand every aspect of hospitality. Over time, I had the opportunity to lead teams, develop innovative guest programs, and support training and quality control initiatives. When the chance came to lead both the Reykjavik Konsulat and Iceland Parliament Hotel under the Curio Collection by Hilton, it felt like the opportunity of a lifetime—bringing together everything I’ve learned with the exciting challenge of overseeing two distinct yet complementary properties.
Iceland is a land of dramatic contrasts. How do your hotels capture the essence of Icelandic beauty and resilience?
Both properties are deeply rooted in their surroundings. The Iceland Parliament Hotel celebrates the nation’s democratic spirit and architectural heritage, while the Reykjavik Konsulat honors a rich merchant history through design and storytelling. We highlight natural materials, local art, and thoughtful experiences—from spa rituals inspired by Icelandic elements to partnerships with local artisans—to ensure guests truly feel the spirit of the land.

What are some unique challenges and opportunities that come with managing two iconic properties in Reykjavik?
One of the main challenges is maintaining distinct identities for each hotel while ensuring consistency in service and team culture. Staffing and logistics can also be complex in a remote destination like Iceland. But the opportunity to craft two unique guest journeys—one rooted in political and cultural heritage, the other in historical luxury— makes the work incredibly rewarding. It allows us to attract diverse guests while building a unified, passionate team.
How does the Iceland Parliament Hotel reflect the spirit and history of its extraordinary location?
Located just steps from Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, the hotel is steeped in history We’ve integrated original architectural features, collaborated with local historians, and it is integral to the hotel that we have a local art collector that curated amazing local artwork from his private collection that reflects Iceland’s journey as a nation. The design honors the elegance of early 20th-century Reykjavik while delivering modern luxury. Guests often say staying here feels like stepping into a living part of Icelandic history.
Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel has a fascinating backstory. How do you weave that heritage into the modern guest experience?
The Konsulat Hotel was once the home of Consul Thomsen, a prominent 19th-century entrepreneur. We celebrate that legacy through curated artifacts, storytelling elements throughout the property, and a timeless design that blends vintage charm with contemporary comfort. Even the spa is modeled after traditional Icelandic public baths. Guests feel immersed in history, but never at the expense of comfort or modern convenience.

What leadership qualities do you believe are essential when managing properties in such a dynamic and remote destination?
Resilience is absolutely essential. In a place like Iceland—where nature is unpredictable, logistics can be challenging, and seasonality plays a major role—you have to be able to adapt quickly and stay calm under pressure. That resilience also needs to extend to the team: creating a culture where people feel supported, heard, and empowered to face challenges with confidence.
Alongside resilience, I believe empathy and clear communication are key. Understanding your team’s needs, building trust, and creating space for open dialogue helps foster a strong, united workplace. Finally, vision is critical— especially when leading two distinct properties. You need to keep your teams aligned

around a shared purpose while encouraging innovation and pride in delivering an exceptional, locally rooted guest experience.
What is one Icelandic tradition or cultural element you love sharing with international guests?
I love sharing Iceland’s history of fighting for equality and independence—it’s a cornerstone of who we are. Our journey from a small, isolated island to a modern, innovative nation speaks volumes about the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the Icelandic people.
One of the most meaningful stories I tell is actually from my own family. The Iceland Parliament Hotel now stands where the Old Ladies’ School once operated—a school that greatly improved the educational opportunities available to young Icelandic women. My greatgrandmother, Hólmfríður Þórðardóttir, traveled from
Svartárkot, a small farm in the Bárðardalur valley in Iceland’s remote highlands, all the way to Reykjavik in the early 1900s. She made the long journey with her father to attend the school—an extraordinary act for a young woman at that time. She walked the same halls our guests do today, becoming one of the first women in Iceland to receive a formal education with a structured curriculum. Not only that— she excelled: she was elevated a year, skipped a full grade, and finished at the top of her class.
I sadly never got to meet her, as she passed away exactly one year before I was born—but her story lives on through our hotel and through me. Sharing her journey is not only a tribute to her courage but also a reflection of the values Iceland continues to stand for: resilience, education, independence, and progress. I am so proud to be her great-granddaughter.
What’s your favorite hidden gem in Reykjavik you love recommending to guests?
One of my favorite hidden gems is the little footbath out by Grótta, on the tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula. It’s a peaceful spot where you can soak your feet in warm geothermal water while taking in views of the ocean, mountains, and often a stunning sunset—it’s simple, serene, and very Icelandic.
I also always tell guests: if you want to meet locals, go to the swimming pools. Places like Sundhöllin or Vesturbæjarlaug are where real community life happens—you’ll see friends catching up in the hot tubs, kids playing, and people of all ages enjoying the water, no matter the weather. And what makes Reykjavik so special is that you don’t have to go far to feel like you’re in the wild: drive just 20 minutes in almost any direction, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by nature—lava fields, mountains, geothermal areas. It’s the perfect balance of urban charm and natural beauty.
As a leader, how do you encourage innovation and creativity among your team?
For me, leadership starts with being personal. I make it a priority to truly know my team—understand who they are, what drives them, and where they want to go professionally. I want to see each individual succeed, and I see my role as someone who facilitates that journey. Whether it’s providing opportunities for growth, encouraging new ideas, or simply being available for support, I lead through service—that’s really at my core.
When people feel seen and supported, they’re more confident to take initiative, think creatively, and contribute beyond their job description. I believe innovation thrives in environments where people feel valued and trusted, and that’s the culture I work to create every day.
What is your vision for the future of luxury hospitality in Iceland?
Luxury in Iceland is increasingly about authenticity, sustainability, and meaningful experience. My vision is to lead in these areas—offering unforgettable stays that are environmentally responsible and culturally rich. We want to continue pushing boundaries while staying deeply connected to Icelandic values and nature.
In a land defined by extremes, Helga Björk Jósefsdóttir stands as a beacon of thoughtful leadership, blending Icelandic legacy with modern luxury. Her commitment to culture, innovation, and team empowerment elevates the experience at both the Iceland Parliament Hotel and Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel. Through every curated detail and heartfelt story, she invites travelers not just to visit Iceland—but to feel it.

SABI OMAKASE OSLO: WHERE PRECISION MEETS POETRY IN THE HEART OF NORWAY
In the heart of Oslo’s bustling urban scene, behind an unassuming door, lies one of the city’s most transformative culinary sanctuaries: Sabi Omakase. With just ten seats arranged around an elegant counter, this Michelin-starred restaurant offers more than dinner — it presents a ritual, a pause, a moment of clarity in a fastmoving world.
Guided by the philosophy of “omakase” — a Japanese phrase meaning “I leave it up to you” — the dining experience is entirely entrusted to Executive Chef and General Manager Airis Zapašnikas. His journey, which began in Kaunas, Lithuania, took a turn from medical school toward culinary mastery, eventually leading him to train under some of Norway’s finest sushi chefs and earn accreditation from the All Japan Sushi Association. Today, his passion and precision have culminated in one of the country’s most revered gastronomic addresses.
Each course — a delicate sequence of Tsumami, Sashimi, and Nigiri — is prepared using Norway’s freshest seasonal ingredients. Every dish is composed to preserve the innate character of the ingredients, with

textures, aromas, and flavors in perfect harmony. This is Edomae sushi tradition at its finest, where even the smallest detail is intentional, and each plate is both a celebration of nature and an act of devotion.
The culinary journey is complemented by a thoughtful beverage pairing menu curated by expert sommeliers, featuring sake, artisanal juices, fine wines, and teas. Whether you opt for the pairing or explore the extensive selection yourself — including champagne, whisky, and rare sakes — the result is a seamless symphony of taste.
In this space, time slows down. Seasonal flowers arranged with poetic imperfection sit alongside minimalist Japanese design, creating an atmosphere that feels sacred, rare, and deeply immersive. At Sabi Omakase, you don’t just eat — you connect. To flavor, to artistry, and to a fleeting, unforgettable moment of stillness.
Sabi Omakase Oslo is not just a destination; it is a dining memory that lingers long after the final bite.

UMI HOTEL: ICELAND’S TRANQUIL HIDEAWAY ON THE EDGE OF THE ELEMENTS
This spring, we had the pleasure of staying at UMI Hotel during our recent trip to Iceland — and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. Iceland’s natural wonders are awe-inspiring on their own, but UMI amplified the magic with its serene location, heartfelt hospitality, and refined atmosphere. Tucked between a windswept black sand beach and majestic mountain ranges, the hotel is a peaceful sanctuary that offers luxurious simplicity rooted in Iceland’s raw beauty.

ARRIVAL AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Our journey to UMI Hotel was a picturesque drive, filled with dramatic shifts in scenery. As we made our way through the rugged Icelandic landscape, we passed lava fields, vast stretches of greenery, ocean views, and the constant backdrop of towering mountains. After a day filled with exploration — including visits to iconic Icelandic sites like Gullfoss Waterfall, the Strokkur Geysers, and the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss — arriving at UMI felt like exhaling after a jam-packed day. Remote and peaceful, UMI greets guests with a quiet presence that immediately soothes the senses.
The hotel’s contemporary design blends effortlessly into its surroundings. With sweeping views of the open landscape and majestic mountains, the setting creates a powerful sense of peace — not immersed in nature, but surrounded by it. From the moment we arrived, we felt an intentional stillness that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS
Just a short turn off Route 1, UMI Hotel feels refreshingly secluded while remaining accessible. The landscape here is expansive — wide skies, crisp coastal air, and panoramic views that shift beautifully with the light.
A scenic 20-minute walk from the hotel leads to a private black sand beach, where the Atlantic stretches endlessly ahead. This secluded shoreline, free from crowds or commercial development, became one of our favourite spots for quiet reflection. Whether you’re watching the mist rise over distant mountains or simply letting the sea breeze clear your mind, UMI’s surroundings inspire connection — to the land, and to yourself.

ROOMS AND AMENITIES
Our room was another highlight of the stay, striking a perfect balance between Nordic minimalism and warm comfort. Soft lighting, natural tones, and large windows created an atmosphere that was both tranquil and inviting. Every detail — from the plush bedding to the high-end toiletries and thoughtfully placed coffee station — reflected a deep care for guest experience. It was the perfect space to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
One of the amenities we enjoyed most was the sauna, housed in a separate building with large windows that overlooked the natural landscape. The sauna was a wonderful way to relax after a day of exploring and warm up after a chilly beach walk. It perfectly blended modern comfort with traditional Icelandic wellness culture. We also enjoyed chatting with fellow travellers and comparing routes and experiences — a lovely reminder of how travel brings people together.

DINING EXPERIENCE
Dining at UMI Hotel was a memorable experience in itself. The hotel’s restaurant offered an intimate setting with large windows providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. While dining, we experienced the warmth of UMI’s hospitality, enjoying an insightful conversation with our waiter about Iceland’s culture and customs.
The menu featured a variety of dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, and we were particularly impressed by the quality and presentation. The Icelandic cod and Arctic char were standout dishes — both perfectly prepared and paired with seasonal vegetables. The flavours were simple yet rich, allowing the natural ingredients to shine.
Breakfast was just as lovely. The buffet included fresh pastries, smoked fish, cheeses, fruits, warm dishes, and more — all beautifully arranged and frequently replenished. We lingered over strong coffee and slow conversations as the light shifted across the room, making it a peaceful and grounding start to the day.

PERSONAL MOMENTS AND REFLECTIONS
One of the most memorable parts of our stay at UMI Hotel was the quiet, reflective time we had. After a long day of sightseeing, we took a peaceful walk on the private black sand beach. The beach was completely empty, and it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. The sound of waves crashing against the shore, coupled with the cold wind on our faces, made for a deeply calming and serene experience.
We also enjoyed time in the hotel’s cozy lounge area — the perfect spot to relax with a cup of hot cocoa or a glass of wine, while reading or simply soaking in the tranquil surroundings. The entire atmosphere of the property felt designed to encourage relaxation and reconnection, making it an ideal retreat for anyone seeking to unplug and unwind.
HOSPITALITY AND SERVICE
What truly set UMI Hotel apart was the level of hospitality we received. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like we were the only guests at the hotel. The check-in process was smooth and welcoming, and the reception staff gave us a thorough rundown of the property and local attractions. Throughout our stay, the team was always available for any questions or requests — present, but never intrusive.
One of the most thoughtful touches was the personalized recommendations we received for nearby hikes and excursions. It was clear the staff were passionate about ensuring guests had not just a great stay, but a meaningful experience in the region.

WHY WE’D RECOMMEND IT
We would highly recommend UMI Hotel to anyone looking for a peaceful, naturefilled getaway in Iceland. Whether you’re a couple on a romantic escape, a solo traveler seeking solitude, or a family looking to reconnect with nature, this hotel offers something special. The combination of stunning natural beauty, exceptional service, and top-notch amenities makes it a perfect destination for anyone looking to experience Iceland at its finest.
For those seeking adventure, the hotel is ideally located near major attractions, while still providing a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring. The experience at UMI Hotel allowed us to feel immersed in the beauty of Iceland, while also enjoying modern comforts and warmth. A STAY AT: ICELAND PARLIAMENT HOTEL –CURIO COLLECTION BY HILTON
In the heart of Reykjavík, where history whispers from parliament walls and modern design pulses through every street corner, the Iceland Parliament Hotel stands as a stylish, soulful sanctuary for the luxury traveler.
During our recent trip to Iceland, we had the pleasure of spending two nights here — and it was everything we hoped it would be, and more. Part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, this hotel blends modern architecture with a sense of history, creating a space that feels both sleek and full of character. After roughly 30 hours of travelling, arriving at the hotel, we were embraced by true, warm Icelandic hospitality.
The hotel is situated right next to the Icelandic Parliament and within walking distance of most major attractions. What immediately caught our attention was its unique exterior. It stands out in the city — striking, yet somehow still perfectly in tune with the surrounding area. Inside, the space is equally beautiful. There’s an understated elegance to it, with bold design elements and curated artwork throughout the hallways and public areas. It feels like a place where Icelandic culture and modern luxury meet in a quiet but confident way.
ARRIVAL AND CHECK-IN
Checking in was a breeze. The front desk staff were warm and helpful, and we really appreciated how attentive they were — especially considering the chaos of trying to figure out Reykjavík’s parking situation after such a long travel day. Driving in the city isn’t too difficult, but the parking system has a lot of zones, time restrictions, and pay areas, which can get confusing quickly. When we asked for help, the gentleman at reception kindly explained how the system worked and even pointed out a small nearby street that wasn’t yet zoned, meaning we could park there for free. That tip alone saved us a lot of stress. We also received information about attractions to explore in the city, along with a map.
ROOM
Our room was a King Junior Suite, and stepping over the threshold felt like entering a calming retreat. The corner room had plenty of space and light and offered views of the square and of Hallgrímskirkja — Reykjavík’s famous church — in the distance, which felt really special. The room was beautifully furnished, with a modern Scandinavian style that still managed to feel cozy and warm — including the comfiest armchair we’d gladly copy at home for a reading corner!
One of the highlights was the spacious, light-filled bathroom, featuring a double waterfall shower — perfect for soaking off the day. The water pressure, the layout, and even the lighting were just right. Getting ready early in the morning with the sunlight streaming in from the large windows was such a delight. The space felt like a little spa of its own — the kind of place you can indulge in while preparing for the day or unwinding after a crisp day of exploring the city and surroundings.
To make the experience even more memorable, we were welcomed with champagne upon arrival in our room — a thoughtful touch that really elevated our first impression. After a long day of travel, it was exactly what we needed to shift into holiday mode.

BREAKFAST
We had breakfast at the hotel both mornings, and it was consistently excellent. Guests can choose between a buffet and à la carte options, and we found both to be high-quality and delicious. The buffet was well-stocked with fresh fruits, pastries, yoghurts, eggs, and traditional Icelandic touches, while the menu had a few standout dishes we wouldn’t hesitate to order again. The setting was calm and elegant, and the staff were attentive without being intrusive.
Although we didn’t have lunch or dinner at the hotel, we did spend some time at the lobby bar. It has a warm, inviting atmosphere and was the perfect place to wind down with a drink. Whether you’re in the mood for a cocktail or something simple, the bar staff were friendly and knew what they were doing.
AMENITIES
The hotel also has a gym and spa onsite, which is a nice option for guests staying longer or wanting some downtime indoors. While we didn’t use those facilities ourselves, it was great to know they were available. What we did make use of, though, was the Residence Lounge. It’s a quiet space where guests can grab a coffee, take a meeting, or just relax. We found it particularly useful as a spot to regroup and plan out our days.
We packed a lot into our short time in Reykjavík — including a full-day trip to the Sky Lagoon and snorkeling at Þingvellir National Park — and coming back each evening to such a comfortable and calming hotel made a big difference. The Iceland Parliament Hotel provided the perfect contrast to the chilly, wind-blown adventures outdoors. It felt like a little bubble of peace in the center of the city.
In the end, we had a genuinely lovely experience. The service, design, location, and thoughtful touches throughout our stay all came together to create something really special. This hotel strikes the right balance between luxury and approachability — it’s stylish but not intimidating, high-end but still personal.
We would absolutely recommend the Iceland Parliament Hotel to couples looking for a refined yet relaxed base in Reykjavík, business travelers wanting comfort with access to great amenities, or anyone simply looking to treat themselves during their Icelandic adventure. It left a lasting impression, and we’d happily stay there again.
In a city where fire and ice define the landscape, the Iceland Parliament Hotel offers a calm, curated pause — and a stay we won’t soon forget.

ROOTED IN THE LAND, GUIDED BY HEART: A CONVERSATION WITH ANNA KRUCZEK OF UMI HOTEL
In a country defined by elemental power and tranquil stillness, UMI Hotel stands as a rare retreat—where luxury whispers rather than shouts, and hospitality is deeply personal. Located along Iceland’s majestic southern coast, UMI offers more than a place to stay; it offers a way to feel. At the heart of this philosophy is General Manager Anna Kruczek, whose global hospitality experience and deep love for Iceland’s rugged beauty have shaped UMI into a haven of authenticity, warmth, and thoughtful service. We sat down with Anna to learn more about her journey, her leadership, and her vision for boutique luxury at the edge of the world.
Every leader has a unique journey. What experiences shaped your career path and led you to your current role at UMI Hotel?
Our journey has been shaped by a combination of extensive travel and a deep-rooted passion for hospitality. Over the past 15 years, we’ve had the privilege of working in various roles across the hospitality industry, giving us a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to create exceptional guest experiences.
How does the landscape around UMI—glaciers, black sand beaches, volcanoes—inspire your property’s philosophy and service?
The stunning landscape around Umi Hotel, with its glaciers, black sand beaches, and volcanoes, deeply inspires our philosophy and service. We bring nature into our offerings by using locally sourced ingredients in our cuisine and providing guests the opportunity to do a cold plunge in the river behind our wellness area. This connection to the land enhances the authenticity and beauty of our guest experience.
How does being located away from the bustle of Reykjavik shape your approach to hospitality?
As a countryside hotel, our operations differ significantly from those in the capital area, especially during winter when snowstorms and road closures are common. We often begin our service well before guests arrive at Umi Hotel, providing them with updates on road conditions and potential closures. We are dedicated to ensuring our guests’ safe and comfortable travel to and from Umi Hotel. Our team works diligently to clear snow from the roads and assist with any vehicle issues, including towing cars that are stuck in the snow.
What makes UMI Hotel unique compared to other Icelandic accommodations?
It´s definitely our staff. We are always here for our guests, ready to assist with every small problem they might have. Whether it’s fixing a broken shoe or arranging a helicopter for the next morning, our team is dedicated to providing exceptional service and ensuring that every guest’s needs are met.
How do you integrate sustainability and respect for Iceland’s fragile environment into the hotel’s operations?
We prioritize using locally sourced ingredients in our cuisine to reduce our carbon footprint and support local farmers. Our hotel also implements energy-efficient practices and uses renewable energy sources to minimize environmental impact. Additionally, we encourage guests to engage in eco-friendly activities and provide information on how to explore the natural surroundings responsibly. This commitment to sustainability ensures that we protect the beautiful landscapes that make Iceland so unique.

What do you believe travelers are seeking today when they come to Iceland, and how does UMI deliver on those dreams?
Travelers today are craving meaningful connection—to nature, to stillness, and to authenticity. They come for isolation, northern lights, hiking, and hot springs— and at UMI, they find all of that. It’s a space to truly disconnect from the noise of daily life.
How do you create a sense of warmth and welcome amid the remote and wild surroundings?
From the first smile that greets guests as they enter the hotel, to taking their wet clothes to the drying room, we ensure their comfort. We ask about their day with genuine interest, and if they are cold, we offer them a warm tea with honey and lemon.
What is your personal connection to Iceland’s landscape and culture, and how does it influence your leadership?
After over a decade in Iceland, this land has become my second home. I’ve adapted to the local rhythm and values, which has positively influenced both my personal and professional life. It’s helped me create a leadership style rooted in resilience, respect, and genuine hospitality.
What has been your proudest achievement as GM of UMI Hotel so far?
My proudest achievement as the General Manager of Umi Hotel has been creating a dedicated and long-term staff. Despite the challenges of our remote location, where the nearest shop is an hour’s drive away, we have managed to foster a special atmosphere that our guests truly appreciate. This unique environment is

a direct result of our team’s commitment and loyalty, which has been instrumental in making UMI Hotel a memorable destination.
How do you see the future of boutique luxury evolving in remote destinations like southern Iceland?
While the potential for increased luxury in southern Iceland is undeniable, it’s crucial to balance development with preservation. The raw, untouched beauty of the region is what makes it unique and appealing. As boutique luxury evolves, it should focus on enhancing the guest experience without compromising the natural charm and limited accommodations that make the area special. Sustainable practices and thoughtful design will be key in maintaining the delicate balance between luxury and the pristine environment.
At UMI Hotel, luxury is not about opulence—it’s about authenticity, intimacy, and reverence for nature. Under Anna Kruczek’s leadership, this quiet sanctuary on Iceland’s southern coast has become a reflection of her values: resilience, care, and connection. In a land where light never fades in summer and silence speaks louder than words, UMI is more than a destination— it’s a feeling, and one that lingers long after you leave.
