ARCTIC TREEHOUSE HOTEL KATJA IKÄHEIMO-LÄNKINEN Founding partner

We had the honour of sitting down with the visionary founding partner of the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel, Katja Ikäheimo-Länkinen. We delve into the motivation behind establishing a high-end hotel in the Arctic Circle, the challenges faced, rewarding aspects, and the unique experiences and offerings that make the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel a standout destination in the Nordics. Can you share with us the inspiration behind the concept and design of The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel? The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel draws its inspiration from the enchanting Nordic nature and culture, as well as the magical world of SantaPark, resulting in a truly unique and immersive experience. The hotel’s concept was developed in close cooperation between innovative Studio Puisto and entrepreneurs Mr. Ilkka Länkinen and Mrs. Katja IkäheimoLänkinen, with a vision of creating a harmonious blend of nature and luxury. The individual accommodation buildings are thoughtfully placed within the natural surroundings, emphasizing the characteristics of the area and creating an optimal setting for guests to connect with nature and Arctic mysticism. The hotel’s design focuses on providing a contrast between the wild, untamed nature of Lapland and the safety and comfort of a nest-like space, offering guests a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Each accommodation unit features soft, warm materials in its interior design, enhancing the cozy and nest-like atmosphere that guests can enjoy.

The placement of the suites, either on top of the road with stair access or under the road for direct street entry, allows for flexibility and choice in the guest experience. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls in every accommodation unit maximize the unobstructed view of the breathtaking Lapland scenery, ensuring that guests are always connected to the natural beauty outside. The Arctic TreeHouse Suites incorporate nestbeds, which are standard-sized and a favourite among children, adding a touch of whimsy to the design. The Arctic GlassHouses, with their dark and atmospheric interiors, offer an ideal setting for families and feature private saunas with glass walls, providing guests with a spa-like experience in the heart of nature. The Arctic Scene Executive Suites take the experience to a deeper level, offering private spa areas and stunning views, creating a sense of relaxation and comfort. The hotel’s architecture and design embrace sustainability, with a commitment to minimizing its impact on the fragile Arctic environment, making it not only a luxurious retreat but also an eco-conscious destination for travellers seeking an unforgettable Lapland experience.

What motivated you to establish a high-end hotel in the Arctic Circle? Our decision to establish a highend hotel in the Arctic Circle was driven by a deep appreciation for the region’s unique natural beauty and a commitment to sustainable tourism. We recognized the Arctic Circle as an extraordinary location, offering unparalleled experiences with beautiful nature, including the Northern Lights, forest surroundings, and exciting activities. At the same time, we saw an opportunity to provide travelers with a luxury destination that not only showcased the Arctic’s natural wonders but also celebrated the rich local culture. We believe that luxury travel should not only be about lavish accommodations but also about immersing oneself in the authentic culture of the area. Our vision was to create a haven of high-end accommodation and service excellence within 18 l DECEMBER 2023 l Vol.25

this remote environment. By embracing and promoting the local culture and traditions, we aimed to offer our guests a holistic and enriching experience that combines luxury with a deep connection to the Arctic’s natural and cultural heritage.

and sustainability. It combines the innovative concept with meticulous attention to detail, utilizing high-quality natural materials in its interior design and offering an immersive dining experience at the Rakas Restaurant that showcases local cuisine and ingredients.

The hotel has gained attention for its exceptional concept and award-winning design. What aspects to you believe make Arctic TreeHouse Hotel stand out from other high-end hotels in the Nordics?

This harmonious blend of luxury, nature, and eco-consciousness creates an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking a unique and responsible escape in the Arctic Circle.

The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is truly exceptional among high-end hotels in the Nordics. Its unique concept and award-winning design set it apart, with individual accommodation buildings immersed in the Arctic nature, offering guests uninterrupted views of the stunning Lapland scenery, including the Northern Lights.

What aspects of the hotel are your personal favourites?

What truly distinguishes this hotel is its commitment to both luxury

My favorite aspects of the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel include the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that truly make you feel like a part of nature. They offer unparalleled views of the Arctic landscape, including the mesmerizing Northern Lights, creating a magical atmosphere that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. Additionally, the hotel’s

exceptional team deserves special mention. Their dedication and commitment to providing top-notch service enhance the overall experience for guests, making every stay truly memorable. One more favorite feature is the private dining experience in the traditional kota. It’s a unique opportunity to savor local cuisine in a cozy, traditional setting, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the Arctic experience. The combination of nature, outstanding service, and immersive dining truly sets the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel apart. Given the Hotels location in Finnish Lapland, how does the hotel integrate or showcase local culture and traditions? One of the ways we do this is through our use of locally sourced raw materials, such as pine wood, in the construction of our buildings. This not only reflects the natural beauty of Lapland but also supports the local economy, ensuring a strong connection to the land. Our dedication to sustainability extends to our culinary offerings, where we proudly utilize local ingredients in our cuisine. From berries and game meats to fresh fish from nearby waters, our menus showcase the flavours of Lapland, giving guests a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. In our boutique shop, we go beyond traditional souvenirs. We proudly feature local handicrafts that embody the craftsmanship and creativity of the area. Guests have the opportunity to take home unique, locally crafted items that reflect the rich artistic traditions of Finnish Lapland. Overall, the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel strives to be a respectful and responsible custodian of Lapland’s culture and environment. Through our use of local materials, celebration of local cuisine, and representation of local handicrafts, we aim to provide guests with an authentic and enriching experience that connects them with the heart and soul of this remarkable region.

Operating a unique hotel in the Arctic wilderness must come with its challenges. Can you share some of the challenges you’ve faced and how you’ve overcome them?

Operating a unique hotel in the Arctic wilderness has certainly come with its share of challenges, but we’ve embraced these challenges as opportunities to create an even more exceptional experience for our valued guests. Firstly, the extreme weather conditions of the Arctic could be perceived as a challenge, but we’ve transformed this into an advantage. By implementing cutting-edge insulation and heating systems, we’ve not only ensured our guests’ comfort but also allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking Arctic environment. The snowfall and cold temperatures have become an integral part of the magical winter wonderland experience we offer. Secondly, our remote location has led us to build strong relationships with local suppliers and establish a robust supply chain. This has enabled us to showcase the very best of Lapland. From incorporating locally sourced ingredients into our culinary creations to featuring the exquisite craftsmanship of local artisans in our boutique shop, we view our location as an opportunity to support the local economy and share the authentic flavours and culture of the region with our cherished guests. Lastly, sustainability is not a challenge but a core principle that guides our operation. Our commitment to eco-friendly technologies, including geothermal and solar thermal energy, harmonizes seamlessly with the pristine Arctic environment. It allows us to provide a luxurious experience while treading lightly on the Earth, achieving a perfect balance between opulence and responsible stewardship of this magnificent wilderness. In overcoming these challenges, we’ve not only created a unique and unforgettable experience for our guests but also cultivated a deeper connection to the Arctic environment and its rich culture. We’ve transformed challenges into opportunities, and it’s this spirit of innovation and adaptation that truly sets our Arctic TreeHouse Hotel apart. What are some of the most rewarding aspects of running Arctic TreeHouse Hotel? One of the most rewarding aspects of running the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel has been the opportunity to meet and host wonderful people from around the world. Witnessing the happiness and awe in the faces of our guests as they experience the magic of our place is truly heartwarming. It’s immensely Vol. 25 l DECEMBER 2023 l 19

fulfilling to know that we’ve been able to create an environment where people can make cherished memories and connect with the beauty of Lapland. Additionally, seeing how our dedicated team has grown and developed over time has been a source of pride. Our staff members are not just employees; they are passionate individuals who play a crucial role in creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. Witnessing their professional growth and personal development has been deeply rewarding and a testament to the positive and nurturing environment we’ve cultivated at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel. The hotel offers unique experiences such as nature walks, Santa Clause Secret Forest etc. For guests visiting during the Christmas season, what are your top recommendations for activities they can’t miss? For guests visiting during the magical Christmas season, we have a selection of unforgettable activities that truly capture the essence of Lapland’s winter wonderland. Private Visit to Santa Claus Secret Forest: A highlight of the Christmas season is a private visit to Santa Claus Secret Forest. This enchanting experience allows guests to meet Santa Claus himself in the heart of the Arctic wilderness. But that’s not all; you can also discover the Secret Command Center and peek into the Toy Factory. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share your wishes with the jolly old man, all while surrounded by the pristine beauty of the forest. Wool Sock Walk in the Forest: To fully embrace the cozy and warm spirit of Christmas, we recommend a wool sock walk in the forest. Our guided walk through the snow-covered woods, with the soft crunch of snow underfoot, is an immersive and serene way to connect with the natural beauty of Lapland. Husky Safari: Embark on an exhilarating husky safari through the snow-covered landscapes. Feel the excitement as these friendly and energetic huskies pull you through the Arctic wilderness. It’s a thrilling adventure that showcases the strong bond between humans and these amazing animals. Ice Floating: For a truly unique experience, we recommend ice floating. Guests can don a special thermal suit and float peacefully on the icy waters of a pristine Arctic lake, gazing up at the winter sky. 20 l DECEMBER 2023 l Vol.25

It’s a serene and meditative activity that provides a deeper connection to the Arctic’s tranquillity. Private Kota Dinner: To cap off your Christmas celebration, we invite guests to indulge in a private Kota dinner. Inside a traditional Lappish hut, you can savour a delectable meal prepared with local ingredients, all while basking in the warm glow of the open fire. It’s an intimate and cozy dining experience that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the season. These activities are just a glimpse of the unforgettable experiences awaiting our guests during the Christmas season at the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel. Each one is designed to create lasting memories and share the magic of Lapland’s winter wonderland. Are there any future expansions or plans for the hotel in 2024 that you can share? We’re excited to share that in December 2023, we will be opening our new luxury Villas, known as ‘Hidden Arctic Cloud.’ These exquisite accommodations will provide an even more enchanting and secluded experience for our discerning guests. Nestled amidst the pristine wilderness of Lapland, the ‘Hidden Arctic Cloud’ Villas redefine luxury, seclusion, and sustainability. Located just 20 minutes from the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel, these villas offer an unparalleled and exclusive escape for our discerning guests. Situated in a secluded lakeside area, the ‘Hidden Arctic Cloud’ Villas are a haven of tranquility, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic landscape. Each villa is thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, ensuring that guests feel immersed in the wilderness while enjoying the utmost comfort and luxury. Sustainability is at the core of our design philosophy. The villas are a shining example of eco-friendly architecture, featuring energy-efficient systems and sustainable materials that minimize their environmental footprint. Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a family retreat, or a gathering of friends, the ‘Hidden Arctic Cloud’ Villas offer a unique and unforgettable experience, allowing guests to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature.

Furthermore, we have ambitious plans on the horizon. We are currently in the planning stages for two additional hotel projects that will offer a unique Nordic Spa experience. These projects are a testament to our commitment to providing exceptional and immersive experiences in the heart of Lapland. As we continue to grow and evolve, our goal remains the same – to offer our guests the opportunity to discover the magic of Lapland while enjoying the utmost luxury and comfort. We look forward to sharing more details about these exciting developments in the near future.
