Faux Fur Timeless Fashion in an Ethical Way

Consumers today are more socially aware than ever when it comes to the latest fashions. By staying informed on unethical business practices, we can stay up to date on latest styles with a clear conscience, as well as a new wardrobe. This winter saw the rise in faux fur which has been a welcome trend, given the amount of controversy surrounding the use of real fur. With companies like Canada Goose making the news for the cruel treatment of animals in their supply chain, consumers have voiced their disdain for such practices, causing some companies to ditch the use of real fur in all their products. Versace, Gucci, and Michael Kors have all spoken out against the use of fur and are transitioning to exclusively using faux fur in their products. While faux fur looks just as real as animal fur, it’s supporting animal rights as this trend keeps growing. A great faux fur coat can and should be paired with a variety of garments. Because of how many different looks faux fur can be produced in, finding one that fits a unique personality and aesthetic should be quick and easy. As the centerpiece of an outfit, pairing a fur coat with complementary pieces is important to creating a balanced look that isn’t too over-the-top but garners just the right amount of attention. Mixing textiles in a fur-laden look helps to achieve that balance while staying fashionable. Because faux fur can be made in such eccentric color combinations, pairing a bright coat with a dark, or even black, pair of denim and a simple, modern top will give the coat a stage for which it can stand on and shine. For a more modern look, a faux fur bomber jacket worn over a sweater and a black pair of skinny jeans gives off a cool chic vibe straight off the runway. When donning a long fur coat for a more traditional classic look it’s important to pair with heels or platforms and well fitted pants to elongate the legs for a more proportionate fit, preventing the long coat from making the wearer look short and boxy.
With the faux fur trend coming in hot this season there are countless ways to wear a faux fur coat that will give a modern update to a classic look. Combining different textiles is what really elevates an outfit to the next level. Paying attention to the textures of different pieces and how they interact and play with one another will enable a faux fur coat to to stand out properly while not overwhelming, or being overwhelmed by the rest of the pieces at work. While the use of faux fur is great for animals, finding real fur or faux fur in a thrift shop is always better for the environment by reusing and recycling vintage clothing and reducing our impact on the world. A quality faux or real fur coat will likely last longer than the trend, but luckily enough, fur is a timeless fashion with roots buried deep in history and seen in almost all cultures around the world. Even after this trend gives way to another, returning to that faux or real fur coat each winter will set one apart from the others by demonstrating a knowledge and understanding of traditional fashion trends and the revitalization of a classic, enduring look.

The 21st century has been rife with the broken remains of constricting societal norms that once dictated what it means to be masculine. No longer is “manly” only associated with burly, lumberjack-esque men, rather, it has shifted to include the well put together, fashionable men that care about their appearance and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Once seen as effeminate behavior, men who conscientiously put themselves together each morning, from the wardrobe to the bathroom mirror are now commonly lauded for the effort that they clearly put into taking care of themselves, and see more success because of it. Today, the term, “The clothes make the man,” is more relevant than ever, but what does the smell of a man do? A good cologne is the cherry on top of a delicious ice cream sundae. The distinct, mysterious cologne a man wears will undoubtedly garner attention from potential love interests, coworkers, friends, and even strangers on the street. A great cologne does not come cheap, but the most expensive colognes aren’t necessarily the best. The main types of cologne come in eau de toilette and eau de parfum, The eu de parfum will always have a more concentrated scent than the eau de toilette, and typically runs at a higher price. Even though the eau de toilette is less concentrated, there are countless irresistible scents available at an affordable price. unique to each man and a scent that works on Chris Hemsworth may not work for you, and vice versa. Because smell is such an intensely emotional experience that alone can conjure up memories from a first date, a trip to Paris, the scent of a loved one, or anything in between, it’s important to choose a scent that calls out to you and is something you feel is an extension of your personality. A more mature man may be inclined to choose a subtle, woodsy scent with hints of bourbon, leather, or other natural fragrances. A younger man in the dating scene should perhaps choose a sexy, mysterious scent that is irresistible to women, such as Dior Sauvage or L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. If committing to a single scent doesn’t sounds appealing, trying many different samples will help to narrow down the vast selection of available colognes to only the ones that you are most drawn towards. There are many attractive scents available that will set a man apart from those who have not yet discovered the power of cologne. So ditch that body spray you’ve been using since middle school, invest in a decent quality cologne, then experience the attention you will start to gain as the people around you realize that they’ve never smelt such a great man before in their lives.

LUXE Magazine is a student run fashion editorial magazine at Washington State University under the Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Textiles Department. All of the content produced is entirely from students at Washington State University. LUXE focuses on fashion, lifestyle, and beauty that is seen from its producers. Inspiration is seen directly from the team here at LUXE and is interpreted from experience and education on the topics. Just last year, the magazine was re-branded as LUXE. In the future, LUXE will strive to grow its team and audience. LUXE will not just provide entertainment for the public but additionally provide applicable knowledge of fashion and lifestyle. Since the establishment of LUXE, the spring issue is always distributed by print. Moving forward, digital versions of both fall and spring issues will be available on our issuu page. Officially now its own student organization, featured content comes creators from with varying majors. Within the club, members study and learn the inner workings of an editorial fashion magazine. The different departments collaborate with one another to create quality and relevant content for its readers.
