Luther, Bach, and the Cantata Tradition at LSM

An able musician, Martin Luther (1483–1546) instinctively understood music’s role in proclamation, prayer, and teaching. He was an advocate for musical instruction in schools and churches; he also encouraged his colleagues and students to pursue their musical gifts.

For this reason, Lutherans have embraced varied forms of musical expressions in worship from plainsong and solo pieces to large choral and orchestral works, and everything in between. It was this context that allowed Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) to be trained and then later serve as a Lutheran cantor, or church musician

LSM has included one of Bach’s cantatas in a worship service each season since 1997. Today’s liturgy includes the cantata Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt (Just as the rain and snow fall from heaven), BWV 18, one of Bach’s earliest cantatas. It was chosen for its quotation of Isaiah 55, the appointed first reading for today. The cantata is sung in place of the psalm and second reading.

What are today’s readings about?

God’s word is like the rain that waters the earth and brings forth vegetation. It is also like the sower who scatters seed indiscriminately. Our lives are like seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to be little, dormant, or dead, God promises a harvest. At the Lord’s table we are fed with the bread of life, that we may bear fruit in the world.

How can I participate?

This liturgy uses materials from both the chocolate-colored Lutheran Service Book (abbreviated LSB) and the cranberry-colored Evangelical Lutheran Worship (abbreviated ELW). References to “page” numbers are found in the front of the book (look for the smaller numbers at the top or bottom of each page) while references to “Hymn” numbers are found in the main section (look for larger numbers next to hymn titles).

EUCHARIST 2

Loving God, in Christ we are accepted by grace and have peace with you. We know what is good and right, but we do what is hateful and evil. We fail to love our neighbors and fall short of your law of love. We do not share with those in need or extend hospitality to strangers. We ignore the groaning of creation and forget the hope of the gospel.

Forgive us, loving God. Pour your Spirit into our hearts, that we may live as those who are dead to sin and alive to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ neither death, nor life, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In the name of + Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thank be to God.

Just as the rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return again to it, rather moisten the earth and make it fruitful and growing, so that it gives seed for sowing and bread to eat:

wieder zu mir leer kommen, sondern tun, das mir gefället, und soll ihm gelingen, dazu ich’s sende.

Isaiah 55:10–11

O Herr, Herr, hilf! o Herr, laß wohlgelingen!

shall achieve the purpose for which I send it.

My God, here is my heart: I open it to you in my Jesus’ name; so cast your seed within as on a fertile soil. My God, here is my heart: May it bear such fruit, and hundred-fold. O Lord, Lord, help! O Lord, let it be accomplished!

That you would lend your spirit and power with your Word, Hear us, dear Lord God!

Only assure, true Father, assure, that neither I nor any Christians are perverted by the Devil’s deceit. His purpose is completely dedicated to robbing us of your word and all its blessedness.

That Satan be crushed under our feet. Hear us, dear Lord God!

Ah! Many deny word and faith and fall away like rotten fruit, if they suffer persecution. So they plunge into eternal suffering, in order to avoid a temporary woe.

That we, from the Enemy’s and Satan’s horrid murder and blasphemy, raging and fury, be fatherly protected. Hear us, dear Lord God!

SUNDAY, JULY 16 5

Another cares only for his belly; in the meantime totally forgetting his soul;

Mammon also has possessed many hearts. The Word by no means can triumph here

And how many souls are not held captive by lust?

So strongly the world tempts them, the world, that must take Heaven’s place for them, since from heaven they wander away.

That all erring and misled ones be brought back. Hear us, dear Lord God!

IV. Aria Mein Seelenschatz ist Gottes Wort;

My soul’s treasure is God’s word; Besides this all precious things are such webs woven by the world and Satan, to entice miserable souls. Away with all of them, away, away! My soul’s treasure is God’s word.

I pray, O Lord, from the bottom of my heart, that you will never take your holy Word from my mouth; so will I never be ashamed by my sin and guilt, for in your grace I place all my trust: whoever relies firmly upon this, will never look upon death.

An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. By vote of the LSM student body, today’s offering benefits No Kid Hungry, a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. After 25 years of successfully investing in local nonprofits and helping find the best approaches to eradicating poverty and hunger, Share Our Strength launched No Kid Hungry in 2010. As a child hunger organization, ending childhood hunger is their primary focus, though Share Our Strength continues to invest in and develop other campaigns. Offerings may be placed in the basket, or you can use the QR code at left. All offerings collected through the LSM website will be shared with these organizations.

HOLY COMMUNION AT LSM

All are welcome at the table of our Lord Jesus Christ, but no one is required to commune. As a Lutheran worshiping community, the heart of the meal of Holy Communion (also called Eucharist) is trust in the forgiveness of sins that follows repentance. We also affirm that the crucified and risen Christ is truly present in the Lord’s Supper, giving us his body and blood as food and drink.

You are welcome to come forward at the direction of an usher, following others up the right side to the table. The bread is gluten-free, and we offer both regular wine and alcohol-free wine. Receive the bread first with an open hand and eat immediately, followed by regular wine from a common cup or by individual cup from a pouring chalice of regular wine (first chalice) or alcohol-free wine (second chalice). All three stations around the altar offer both common cup and individual cup. Please approach any open station at the direction of an usher. There is also a station on the floor level, to your left as you approach the steps.

Please know that you are also welcome to come forward and receive a blessing from the presider, Chaplain Nathan: show this by crossing your arms and hands over your shoulders.

If your own church tradition or personal conviction would not have you commune with us, you are welcome to remain in your chair to sing and pray during the meal. In the spirit of the traditional Kyrie, may we all continue to pray “for the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all.” Music during communion includes
