Dear Friends,
We have much to celebrate together as we reflect on 2024 and eagerly anticipate all that 2025 has in store. Through these pages, you’ll experience the profound and deeply personal impact LSM has on students, alumni, supporters, event attendees, schools, congregations, and more.
As we reflect on 2024, we can be thankful for:
• Another year of capacity LSM enrollment
• Hundreds of donors who shared their love for LSM, resulting in a balanced budget and long-term sustainability for the program
• Nationally renowned faculty and staff who are dedicated to students and create the LSM experience
• A thriving alumni program that builds lifetime involvement for LSM alums
• Over 15,000 people who enjoyed concerts, recitals, and worship services in person or online this past summer
You have made all of this possible. You have supported scholarships, sponsored studios and events, underwritten concerts, nominated students, shared videos and content on social media or through email, and downloaded compositions. THANK YOU!
LSM is more than a summer community – it is all of us, connected across the country and beyond. It's our shared experiences, whether at the same moment together or even decades apart. It’s the promise of a bright future we share with the next generation of leaders. We have more than hope – we have tangible evidence that we see and hear. The future of the musical and liturgical traditions we hold so dear is strong and in excellent hands as they are being renewed by the young people thriving at LSM today.
In Gratitude,

Following its inaugural season in LSM 2023, The Eugene and Mary Sukup Church Music Program continued to flourish during LSM 2024. Hallmarks and highlights of the 2024 season included capacity enrollment in the LSM organ studio and enthusiastic participation in the area’s elective offerings—Church Music, Introduction to Pipe Organ, Chapel Choir, and Handbells.
The robust experience of this year’s talented and creative students was enhanced through residencies of Catherine Rodland (St. Olaf College), Jennaya Robison (National Lutheran Choir), and Joshua Hollman (Concordia University, St. Paul), as well as through connections with 200 members of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM) who joined the LSM community for their 2024 summer conference, Ponder Anew: Serving and Leading the Church’s Song. The collaboration with ALCM culminated in a performance of Bach’s St. John Passion featuring several LSM alumni, faculty, and staff alongside professional early-music practitioners under the direction of Christopher Cock.
Although the St. John Passion is a significant standalone performance in and of itself, the LSM 2024 community was immersed in this work throughout the season—singing chorales to harmonizations excerpted from the Passion and exploring its contexts and meanings during
the community’s annual Bach workshop. The scheduling of the Passion, too, fueled the creative potential of the “laboratory” approach to LSM worship planning, resulting in a “Festival of Hymns Eucharist” in place of the usual “Cantata Sunday.” This, in turn, created an opportunity for the performance of a cantata by Dieterich Buxtehude as part of evening prayer—enlivening the rich musical heritage of the Lutheran Vespers tradition for the LSM 2024 community.
The successful season concluded on Sunday, July 28, the church’s commemoration of musicians Bach, Schütz, and Handel, as well as the first of five Sundays centered around the “Bread of Life” narrative in John 6. Perhaps for these reasons, the strongest impressions of LSM 2024 seem to find their best expression in delightful food metaphors:
• The hunger of students who immerse themselves in the LSM experience, to squeeze every ounce of musical knowledge from faculty, fellows, and peers
• The eagerness of the community to try new musical recipes in large ensembles and, on a smaller scale, to “season” their solo and chamber pieces with new ideas, organ registrations, techniques, and more
• The nourishment and hope offered for ALCM colleagues who experienced firsthand how LSM students participate in and lead worship
• The long, broad table of the LSM experience—that stretches both before and beyond our own time—that is nourished by embracing tradition and received wisdom alongside innovation and fresh thought
Some LSM organ students have just begun their journey in the organ elective, while others study privately and help lead worship at LSM.

While there is always a distinctive Lutheran “accent” at LSM, the Bach Passion, Buxtehude cantata, and more leaned heavily into the foundations of Lutheran church music from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries—music that many of the students had never heard but in which they found great delight and passion. These satisfying “musical entrées” filled all of us with inspiration and, I hope, will sustain us until we meet again at LSM 2025.

Even though this community will no longer exist in the flesh, the gift of this community is yours forever. It will continue to be real—real in your memory, but even more, real in how you have been changed. You are now a better musician and better person because of LSM. And because you are a better musician and person, your calling now is to extend the same sense of peace and wholeness you have received here and share it with the other world out there.
2024 Carl Schalk
Honoree: Naomi from Grand Marais, MN
"LSM has given me the opportunity to “see how it’s done.” Here, I can feel the Holy Spirit stir around every evening and every morning, fight back tears, feel myself fall a little bit in love with everyone in the room—and see the genius musicians behind it all."
Peter Wessler Honoree: Nicolas from Palmetto
"It really felt like everyone belongs [at LSM]. I've met people with so many different personalities and views on the world, yet everyone respected each other in ways you wouldn't get anywhere else."

"The LSM community was there for me when I needed it most. I want whoever is in my position to feel the same joy that I did and to have that outlet, and that’s why I want to be a music teacher." – Francisco, LSM 2024
“My favorite part of LSM has to be evening prayer and the hashbrowns they serve in the morning. Both of them are wonderful to digest (emotionally)!”
– LSM 2024 student
“I understand that we make mistakes in learning new music and it’s okay so I can become better with the music... Being a part of the LSM community and taking part in the LSM program was like a family...”
– LSM 2024 student
“I’m from a very rural part of MN where it is difficult to find opportunities like this, so it meant a lot to me and was very inspiring. I learned so much even in four short weeks! We played some great repertoire which was challenging and sounded amazing!”
– LSM 2024 student
“I love that I can use my musical talents to glorify God. It is touching to sing and listen to everyone at LSM at evening prayer and morning announcements.”
– LSM 2024 student
“Words fail to express how intensely meaningful LSM is to me. From moments of deep peace during evening prayer to hearing my composition performed for the first time to organ lessons... I can feel this place and these people shaping my soul every day.”
– LSM 2024 student
“LSM is more than just a second home, it’s also my heaven on earth... There’s nowhere I’d rather be than surrounded by the three pillars of LSM: Music, Community, and Faith.”
– LSM 2024 student
“I love this community. I've never felt this happy!"
"Our support of LSM is a thank-you to the faculty and staff that I was blessed to encounter and to give students an opportunity to experience a very special environment in which to grow and nurture their faith — Soli Deo Gloria."
– Jill & Karl (LSM 1985–1986) Maurer

"I love this community. I’ve never felt this happy! I’ve grown so much musically, and I’ve seen that it’s okay to make mistakes."
– Donte, LSM 2024
Rev. Michael D Costello (LSM ‘93–’96)
Accepts 2024 Alumni Award
“Years from now, I am confident that like you and like me, current LSM students will look back and give thanks for this experience. They will give thanks for the faculty, staff, and friends who walked with them and showed them that they are equipped with spiritual and musical gifts unique to each. They will give thanks that their place in the body of Christ is affirmed and known and celebrated. They will know, above all else, that their voice is a part of the church’s song. I don’t know about you, but that is the greatest gift I have ever received.”
LSM students work with alumni composer Lawton Hall ('05–'06), the inaugural Alumni Composition Commission artist. His new work, "Gray Overtures", for brass quintet, is now freely available on LSM’s website.

First Lutheran Church,VA
“Our investment in sending students has yielded not only tremendous growth in their own personal character, faith, and musicianship but has also identified a new missional initiative for the ministry of music within our community.”
Kurt Schmidt (LSM 2000) Zion Lutheran Church, FL
“I know first-hand the formative, spiritual, professional, and lasting effects that being a part of the LSM community can have; why wouldn't I want other talented young people to have the same experience?"
Lori Boyer (LSM 1994–1998) Walther Christian Academy, IL
“Students return from LSM with not only greatly improved skill and musicality, but also a joyful confidence, excited to share the high quality of music-making they have experienced with their peers, and a desire to use their gifts in service to their school, church, and community. Their musicianship, professionalism and enthusiasm all develop at LSM, and inspire and encourage those around them when they return.”
Dozens of churches from around the country sponsored students to attend LSM 2024. Most Young Musicians Partners supported students within their churches, but a few raised funds for a student outside of their congregations. St. Luke Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, NM hosted a fundraiser concert for student Elijah. Fellowship Lutheran Church in Tulsa, OK, sponsored student Santiago (pictured above) from partner congregation, Comunidad de Esperanza. This generosity and outreach is inspiring!
"I give on purpose, for purpose..."
Erica Yaeger Thomas (LSM 2004–2008) I gained confidence, my musical ability grew, and my faith deepened. Each of my 5 summers at LSM was truly a gift that continues to follow me throughout my life and work. I am thrilled to support the class of 2024 as they embark on this beautiful journey!
Scott Rohr (LSM 1983–1985) I attended LSM in the early days, and what I experienced has stayed with me, even forty years later. I treasure what I learned, and the lifelong friendships I made. My support of LSM now is because I want young people today — growing up in a much changed world — to experience the transformative power of LSM. journey!
Brian Becker
I know that LSM is the finest faithbased music academy and festival in the country. I want to ensure that kids who have that aptitude receive that experience too. Congratulations
to Mark and Kathy Helge, this year’s recipients of the Dr. Carlos Messerli Service Award, for outstanding service to the mission of LSM and for their dedication to preserving the music of the church.
The Young Musicians Partnership (YMP) is a growing network of organizations who financially support young musicians to attend LSM. Any organization (such as churches, family foundations, rotary clubs, etc.) which contributes to a specific student’s tuition will be automatically recognized as a Young Musicians Partner. To honor this partnership, funds contributed by an organization are matched at 50% by LSM, up to $500.

Rebecca (Grupe) Burnett (LSM ‘02-’04)
I support LSM because I want more young people to have the opportunity to reside in a space where it is safe to nerd out about music, explore what faith means to them, and experience new things in the midst of a genuine and caring community.
The Christopher Family’s recent major gift has created eight new endowed faculty chairs, enriching the educational experience for students and nurturing musical talent for generations to come.
James & Sarah Klein
It has always been our wish to support LSM in any way that we can. It has truly changed my life and my teaching and our hope is that it continues to change the many lives of the next generation of students and faculty.
Much like Bach’s enduring influence over classical and sacred music and the Church, the J.S. Bach Society honors individuals who have committed to LSM’s long-term impact by including Lutheran Music Program in their will or estate plans. Thanks to these individuals for their dedication to the sustainability and influence of LSM on students, congregations, and our community.

Please contact Lisa Hartwig at lhartwig@lutheransummermusic.org with any questions. Thank you!
Rachel Handlin (LSM ‘86-’87, LSM Violin Faculty) I support LSM because I found my people here! We played in a quartet together, visited each other at college, attended weddings, celebrated our kids, and even worked together!
Jane Wilke
Giving "on purpose, for purpose" is important to me. When I see how life-changing this experience is, I consider it a worthy purpose with lasting impact. I value vocation, and I pray that these gifted young people will be moved to use music to serve God and others, now and for years to come.
Michael Hovland & Nancy Jones
We believe that good music feeds the human spirit, and that good church music enhances the worship experience—and enhances the Word of God.
