God’s Provision, Man’s Actions

I

magine yourself as a fisherman. A fisherman following a uniquely spiritual man, a man who claims to be the Son of God.

It’s been a long and tiring day. You’ve been dealing with throngs of people, demanding, difficult people, who have crowded and jostled and yelled and tripped, trying to get near the man you follow. And now the sun is setting. Looking about, you see a sea of faces. Young and old. Sick and healthy. Male and female. As a fisherman, you know what it would take to feed this crew. As a fisherman, you know this remote place doesn’t — well — it doesn’t have a prayer of meeting those needs. But the man you follow says: “You give them something to eat. How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” You scramble around and come up with a boy who has a few loaves of bread and a pair of fish. You shake your head. This will not end well. It can’t. It simply can’t. As the sun glides toward the hills, the Son of God calmly has you organize the crowd. He prays to heaven, simply and sincerely. And he begins to hand you bits of fish and bread to pass out to the thousands arrayed around you. Incredibly, this continues until “They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.”

Clarence Hemminger, a resident of The Manors in Saginaw, enjoys a summer day on the campus.

At Lutheran Homes of Michigan, we see God make the impossible possible every single day. We know that God’s power transforms reality. And like those disciples, God hands all of us the tools to get good things done, when we have faith, and when we remain faithful.
