Life has changed in ways nobody could have imagined in the last few months. Companies have been forced to adapt and technologies have had to evolve to suit the new ‘normal’.

Published by Signify – High Tech Campus 48, 5656 AE Eindhoven, The Netherlands www.signify.com/pioneersoflight

Signify is working on a number of different innovations to support people in these unprecedented times. In this edition, you can discover how we’re using UV-C lighting to combat the spread of viruses. June’s e-Luminous also brings valuable insights from the world of connected lighting, including the enormous potential of LiFi and some amazing examples of how responsive lighting displays are increasing citizen engagement around the globe. For each topic, you’ll find a direct link to Signify, Philips, Color Kinetics, or Interact web pages so you can get more information quickly and easily. As always, feel free to share e-Luminous with your agency and wider community. Enjoy reading. Anissa Abbou Head of Global Professional Specification, Signify

On the front line against viruses UV-C lighting The air we breathe and the surfaces we touch can greatly affect our health. We’re all at risk of contracting and spreading viruses and bacteria, especially in busy public areas like the office, store and on public transport. UV-C radiation is a proven and effective way to fight them. Recently Signify and Boston University have validated the effectiveness of Signify’s UV-C light sources on inactivating the virus that causes COVID-19. Read more about this exciting research here.

Responsive lighting display reacts to your speed

De Zwerm Underpass Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Designer, Frank Tjepkema, gave the installation a unique identity by making it look like a freeflowing flock of 728 birds – each made up of two LED lights.

That’s 1456 individually controlled nodes. The display creates the illusion of birds flying in and out of the tunnel. The software is developed to react to traffic frequency and temperature variations; the former influences light lines’ speed while the latter dictates the colors.

De Zwerm Underpass, located on Eindhoven’s Montgomery Lane, is home to a dynamic connected lighting display that changes colors depending the speed of cars, traffic flow and even the weather.

Iconic skyscraper mirrors the moon

QV1 Ring of Confidence Perth, WA, Australia

Projects

To counter increasing maintenance work and costs, the QV1 ownership group sourced a suitable replacement. After an independent review of the job

requirements by Arup engineers, Color Kinetics Graze Compact Powercore, IntelliHue was recommended as the most suitable luminaire for the job. Beginning at dusk with a color temperature of 2500 K and gradually transitioning to a temperature of 6500 K, the display mirrors the moons natural cycle and gives Perth’s skyline a unique identity.

QV1 is an iconic skyscraper on the Perth skyline, known for its luxury office space. Since 1988, the building has featured “The Ring of Confidence,” a halo-esque band of light near the tower’s rooftop.

3 factories 5 star lighting solutions Novozymes Denmark

Projects

Novozymes has three factories in which a large number of T8 neon tube light fittings needed replacing. Access conditions at all locations were generally difficult, making a traditional cable-based installation very time consuming. The plan therefore called for reuse of the existing cable installation, coupled with an intelligent solution to be able to control lighting levels as needed.

A total of 4,400 Pacific and GentleSpace LED fittings were installed, plus 1,200 sensors able to communicate wirelessly with these fittings. No further installation work was needed, as the wireless sensors can be relo cated when required.

A sustainable future

© Tomasz Majewski

A 15-minute drive east of Oslo, SNØ (SNOW) is Norway’s latest indoor winter sports attraction, featuring a 36,000 m² snow area that includes a 2 km cross-country trail and three 500 m slalom slopes. The entire structure is a marvel of modern technology, making connected LED lighting the natural choice.

Projects

The new lighting needed to be energy efficient, functional and durable, a considerable challenge given the sheer size of the project. One hundred ReachElite luminaires were used and, by using Interact Sports software, facility managers could also control the lighting through a simple dashboard configured specifically for recreational sports.
