Maximizing WELL points

Increase office well-being by applying melanopic lighting We have become the indoor generation. On average, we more than 90% of our time indoors, with 36% of that spent in the workplace. But the more time we spend indoors, the less we’re exposed to the beneficial effects of natural light. Melanopic light plays a major role in synchronizing the internal body clock in line with the non-visual effects of light. When you properly integrate melanopic lighting in your building, you’ll enjoy the benefits of natural daylight indoors whilst also enhancing visual comfort, well-being and performance. Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (melanopic-EDI) is the circadian metric adopted by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) — it describes the response of the non-visual photo receptors (ipRGCs) in our eyes. This response is indicative of how the body will respond and is a combination of both the spectrum of the light and the intensity. Download brochure

Workplace health and well-being

The importance of lighting in the WELL building standard The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) launched the WELL Building Standard — a global rating system designed to enhance health and well-being in the workplace — in 2014. V2, the second iteration of the rating system, was introduced in 2020, consolidating all previous variations and the v2 pilot into one WELL Building standard for all project types. WELL v2 responds to new evidence and changing public health concerns and is updated on a quarterly basis. Interact Office connected lighting systems, Philips luminaires, and NatureConnect by Signify are powerful solutions for meeting the design strategies of many preconditions and optimizations in WELL v2. Read the WELL Building Certification leaflet to learn more about how to achieve higher levels of certification. Download brochure

Solar lighting is efficient and cost effective Off-grid solar street lighting, aside from using free and renewable energy, has several other benefits. Not only does it support people with no access to the power grid, hybrid solar street lighting gives large populations the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint, thereby resulting in a greener and healthier world.

This system consists of luminaries, solar panels and batteries designed to operate autonomously without any connection to an electrical grid. The solar panels charge the batteries during the day and the stored energy powers the LEDs at night.

This system is just like the off-grid solar system, but is connected to a power grid. The solar panels charge the batteries during the day and the stored energy powers the LEDs at night. If the batteries run out of power, the LEDs are powered with energy drawn from the power grid.

How does it work?

Electrical energy from panel

When the sun shines during the day, the solar panel converts solar energy to electrical energy and stores it in the battery. During the night, the battery is discharged, releasing electrical energy to power the LED luminaire. If the battery is not adequately charged or it drains out during the night, solar hybrid input will kick in automatically.

Clean energy system helps to achieve climate objectives More than 75% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy production and use. This means the EU must decarbonize its energy system to reach its climate objectives.

• Solar and hybrid street lighting minimize emissions and scale up the use of renewables. • Hybrid-solar technology uses clean solar-powered electricity when there is sunlight, and the mains grid when there is not.

• 15 solar streetlights save enough electricity to power an electric car or a household for one year. • Infrastructure projects, such as connected street lighting retrofits, create on average 19 local

jobs for every €1 million spent, benefitting the environment and the economy and building the digital platforms needed to ensure a green future.

Outdoor luminaire portfolio Charge stations built into digital streetlights support the Green Deal’s goal of a million EV charging points in Europe by 2025. Savings from energy-efficiency renovations and LED and solar street lighting can power tens of thousands of EVs without extra power generation.

Leipsoi Island Leipsoi, Greece

Projects

Leipsoi Island Leipsoi, Greece As with any island in the Greek Dodecanese, imported energy is expensive. Introducing nighttime street and area lighting to the island’s communities was challenging, especially given electricity grid does not always follow the street layout.

© Signify

Locals wanted streetlights that would be aesthetically compatible with the natural landscape and, at the same time, a level of lighting that would improve visibility without overwhelming the beautiful night skies.

The installation of 28 solarpowered Philips SunStay autonomous LED luminaires provided what Mayor Fotis Mangos described as “a very effective, very functional, and highly aesthetically compatible” solution.

The solar luminaires have been fitted with Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors, which detect the approach of pedestrians or vehicles. This allows the light level to be increased automatically to the maximum 3,000 lumens from a background level of around 900 lumens.

It also means that the high efficiency (175 lumens/Watt) LEDs can operate for two full nights without receiving any solar energy, easing maintenance and optimising battery life. Watch the video ›

Infanta Elena Park Seville, Spain

Projects

Infanta Elena Park Seville, Spain Seville is the fourth largest city in Spain, with more than one and a half million inhabitants. The local neighbourhood community asked the city to make their park safe to enjoy at night.

© Signify

Seville City Council chose efficient and reliable Philips SunStay luminaires as the best option. The result? A brightly lit park that feels safe to be in 24 hours a day.

Projects

Infanta Elena Park Seville, Spain SunStay can be installed and ready in just 15 minutes, reducing installation time while promoting efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.

© Signify

The pilot project involved the installation of 20 SunStay luminaires around the perimeter of Infanta Elena Park, which now make it accessible to all users at any time of the day or night, free from the restrictions caused by lack of natural light.

Projects

Infanta Elena Park Seville, Spain The luminaire also incorporates a motion sensor that increases the level of light when movement is detected and reduces it to preserve battery life when there are no people present. The higher level of visibility increases the feeling of safety and security in and around the park. Watch the video ›
