The Education Sector
With energy prices at an all time high, many schools and colleges are finding that their budgets are tighter than ever and investment in the classroom can often pay the price. Government funding is now available and upgrading your lighting is one of the easiest ways you can reduce running costs and have a positive impact on learning.
Efficient Lighting Leads to Lower Bills
and Brighter Ideas
It is commonly accepted that improved lighting leads to improved learning. In fact, according to the California Energy Commission – higher levels of light increase Maths learning by 20% and Reading learning by 26%. Combine that with our project at a London 6th Form College who saw a projected £65,000 saving in their energy bills over 5 years and it becomes clear how improved lighting can dramatically improve performance in your organisation.
Why Upgrade your LED Lighting?
Cost Effectiveness – LED lighting is more efficient, meaning lower energy costs with improved performance. Also, government funding is now available meaning very little initial investment from your budget.
Maintenance – LED products last longer and all of our LED products come with simple, no-nonsense warranties, meaning less worry, less need to replace and more money saved.
Improved Learning – the right lighting can improve focus, clarity and mindset in the classroom, proven to increase results and support mental health.
Durability - LEDs are up to 30 times longer lasting than previous traditional lighting products. Throughout their lifespan, they continue to deliver consistent light.
Environment – LEDs have a dramatically reduced carbon emission compared to traditional lighting. They are better for your budget, as well as the environment.
In order to obtain the perfect lighting solution, you may require additional funding.
The government announced in December 2022 a share of £500million for educational institutions to spend on energy efficient upgrades. LED lighting is one of the best ways you can do this – improving performance and saving money year-on-year.

Inner City Sixth Form College
This project was in a large sixth form college, located in inner-city London. This college understood the importance of lighting in providing a comfortable, yet vibrant environment to support the concentration and general wellbeing of staff and pupils. Our key objectives were to improve the current lighting levels and reduce the college’s energy usage – without compromising comfort or concentration levels.

We installed over 650 luminaires across the site, all fitted with a variety of sensors and controls to maximise the energy saving. Our truSmart Battens and Troffers are equipped with daylight sensors, PIRs, and a Bluetooth mesh system as standard. The system is controlled via an app providing customisable light levels when needed, whilst allowing for the maximum energy savings to be felt throughout the key areas of this project.
This 6th Form College has reduced their energy consumption by nearly 87,000 KWh per year. At the time of installation, that meant a minimum five year saving of £65,000.

Results
• Higher light levels
• Lower energy consumption
• Lower energy bills
• More control with truSmart

Tytherington School
Macclesfield, Cheshire
Tytherington School asked Lumineux to carry out our free lighting design review, to produce a specification for their new site. The school was looking to switch all their lighting to LED, to reduce their energy costs, as well as their carbon footprint. Completed during the summer holidays, the project even included PIR sensors that turn off when no presence is detected, reducing unnecessary energy usage, and lowering energy bills.
The Tytherington project includes our Wraysbury 600 x 600 panels – a highly efficient light, perfect for classrooms due to its even light distribution and flicker free driver.

Delighted with the improvement in our lighting and the savings we are seeing year on year.

What is truSmart?
Control your lighting and reduce your energy bills.
The most efficient light is one that is turned off. The second most efficient light is one that is only on when it is needed.

Features and benefits
DAYLIGHT HARVESTING
truSmart enables you to save money with the most efficient use of your LED lighting. Only lighting rooms when people are in them and adjusting your lighting at brighter times of the day are just two of the features that let you control exactly when your lighting is used. Adjusts the luminaire output depending on the natural light entering the room – the more natural light, the less LED lighting needed – the more money saved.
PIR MOTION SENSING
No more lighting empty rooms. Luminaries will automatically dim and switch OFF when there is no presence in the room.
OCCUPANCY / VACANCY MODES
Occupancy mode automatically turns lights on when you enter a room and off when you leave, making this type of mode the most convenient. Vacancy mode also turns lights off when you leave the room, however, you will need to manually turn them on when you walk into a room. Vacancy sensing maximizes the energy savings from the sensor because it’s not always necessary to turn lights on when you’re in the room.
GROUPING
You can now group all luminaires for an easy setting, scene or schedule set-up. A group of luminaires will allow your room to light up if there’s any movement in either of the sensors.

HIGH / LOW END TRIM
Limit the minimum or maximum light output from each unit – maximizing efficiency in each light and unnecessary light wastage.

Allows the luminaires to stay OFF if there is sufficient light level in the room, even if movement is detected.

LUMINANCE THRESHOLD ZONING

Zoning is for controlling a floor space in a building. Each zone can be set as a different floor in a building, where you could have different groups for room controls.
INDIVIDUAL LUMINAIRE CONTROL SCHEDULE
You are now able to control an LED fitting individually even if it’s grouped. Last used settings will overwrite the group settings.
Make your lighting work around your needs. Having scheduled control will maximize energy savings and help provide safety and security of personnel. For example; automatically increasing the light level during cleaning hours by setting the scene for night.
SCENE CONTROL
Easy scene defining and selection, allowing the user to switch between scenes by the press of a single button.

CIRCADIAN (Human Centric) RHYTHM
Lighting isn’t just space illumination. It’s also a tool that can support well-being, ensure maximum comfort and boost productivity. The ‘rhythm’ allows you to change the output colour temperature through the span of the day, simulating natural daylight. This increases productivity and lowers fatigue caused by unnatural light through the day.
TUNABLE WHITE
Colour and Brightness adjustment from 3000K to 6500K controlled via app or wall controller.
