ZINE LUMI oscar edition

People’s favourite.
The Whale, a powerful but heartbreaking film that details love, loss and the effort to rekindle. It follows Charlie in Brendan Fraser’s nominated role, a man desperate to have a relationship with his daughter. Hong Chau in her nominated supporting role, plays Charlie’s close friend and nurse, a key figure in his life. It’s authentic in a way no film has been for a while and similar to it’s name, will have you swimming in your own tears afterwards.
The Menu, a stunning experience that didn’t seem to be the Academy’s piece of cake.
This clauphobic, thrilling film tells the story of couple Margot and Ted as they dine for the evening at a very executive restaurant with other very influential socialites. Imagine your families tense family lunch and then triple it as you are lead through a visual experience to sink your teeth into. Anya Taylor Joy’s character is amazing, a great but overlooked nomination for Best Lead Actress and makes a great pairing with Ralf
Fienne’s chef, to create an overall dish that is everyone but the Academy’s taste.

If teenage angst was an aesthetic you’ve got it. You and Ellie would star in a coming of age drama, that would definitely receive next Oscar’s nominations.
You like the simple things in life, a pint with your friends, a walk with a stick with a hook on it and that’s ok! You and Dominic would get on like a house on fire (sorry Colm).
Whether it’s a night of karaoke or some mock-tails by the pool, you’re always up for a good time and so is Sophie. Get ready to star in the summer comedy of the year.
You’re a foodie and you like the finer things in life, a trip to Paris is on the cards and you’re the star in the follow up to one of 2022’s best movies.
This could be the year of the comeback. Two of 2022’s most heartfelt performances have been delivered by actors returning from Hollywood exile to kick down the doors and say “I’m back!”. But Hollywood has always loved a comeback story, and the Oscars have been the setting of a few.
Sometimes self-parody can become selfactualisation. Jack Palance won huge at the 1992 Oscars when the ageing star of classic Westerns took home the gold for City Slickers, playing a parody of his classic roles. Not only did he become an Oscar winner at 70, but he dropped to the stage and started doing push ups.
Michael Keaton had similar success minus the callisthenics. Launching a career comeback decades after playing Batman, the ageing star received a nomination for meta-masterpiece Birdman
(do you get it?) and would be the top billed star in back to back Best Picture winners Birdman and Spotlight.
The Tarantino Effect
Quentin Tarantino has been the architect of two career resurrections, first with John Travolta’s nominated turn in Pulp Fiction then with Robert Forster’s winning performance in Jackie Brown. Both followed their nods with the best runs of their careers, a good sign for this year’s ‘Kids’.
Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser are the two most inspiring, and perhaps most worthy, nominees of the 2023 cycle. An 80’s child star and a 90’s heartthrob have returned to screens to cement themselves as not only renewed contenders but heavyweight talents as well. This pair have proven that if there’s any place for an underdog story, it’s at the movies.
