Carnival ROAD MARCH 2016 Soca Moca Survives Tragedy – Wins Carnival 2016, Jump St. Posse Wins Junior Category
Belize City, September 17, 2016 The Soca Moca Carnival Band defended its title as senior Carnival Road March champions for a second year, while the Jump Street Posse won the junior competition of the road march organized by the National Carnival Committee in Belize City on Saturday afternoon. Soca Moca had experience personal tragedy in their mas camp the night before carnival when a house already damaged by Hurricane Earl fell and injured 15 band members putting the final touches on their costumes designed on the theme: “From the Ridges of the Reef: the Mystical Rainforest and the Amazing Barrier Reef.” The worst injured, Debra Humes succumbed to her injuries at the KHMH. The surviving Soca Moca troupers chose to dedicate their Carnival performance to her memory and won the most points from the judges: 465. Tanisha Slusher in her costume “Queen Aquaria – Goddess of the Barrier Reef” led the first section. Their ‘King Foresio – Ruler of the Mystical Rain Forest’ led the second troupe of revellers. Second prize went to the Mother Nature’s Creations Band who brought up the rear of the parade; they won 454pts from the judges. Their “Queen Regalia” led dancers costumed on the theme: “Our Diverse Ancestry – Our Panoramic Culture – One People!’. Veteran trouper Leroy Green in his ‘King Afrique” led the second troupe. Third place went to the winners of the King and Queen competition, the Titans Mas Band. Fifth in the senior bands order, they tallied 432pts from the judges. Veteran trouper Kim Burgess in her “La Sirene” Queen costume led their dancers in costumes designed on the theme Secrets of the Sea, and Michael Middleton as “King Karkinus” led the second group. Jump Street Posse Band leader Marina Welcome was delighted when the judges announced that Jump St. tallied 436pts to win the Junior Road March. Their 65 dancers were led by King Fayah Bun and Queen Renata. Welcome said she was inspired by some of the natural disasters like a recent downtown fire and Hurricane Earl, and she felt her band had experienced a rebirth; so she had chosen the theme: “Burn to Emerge” for their costumes. Second junior prize went to the Collet Royal Revellers who brought up the rear of the junior bands section led by their Queen Polly and King Lionel, in costumes
based on the theme “Protection of Our Jewel.” They won 396pts from the judges. Third junior prize went to the Sunshine Masqueraders junior Mas band who led the road march with their Queen Gretel and King Hansel in costumes designed on the theme: “Candy Land”. They tallied 361pts from the judges. The Black Pearl band followed, led by Queen of Life and their King of Sorrow; the Trenchtown Masqueraders led by their “Queen Gia – Goddess of the Earth” and “King Belicenio”. Their costumes were designed on the theme: “Belize - our Tropical Paradise.” The Pickstock Carnival Band was the fifth junior band, led by their Queen Amara and King Aaron, in costumes on the theme: “A New Day’s Dawn.” The Evolution Mas Band was the first of the senior bands led by Queen Oona - Queen of the Fairies and Patrick Swasey in the costume of King Viper - the Venomous Dragon” with costumes designed on the theme: “Myths and Legends”. The Sunshine Masqueraders had chosen the Birds of Belize as their theme, led by Aisha Estrada in the costume of a scarlet macaw parrot – “Queen Ara” and King Pedro”. The Eternity Mas senior band was third in the road march, led by Melissa Williams in her “Queen Elizabeth II - Queen of Riches” costume and “King Neftuleh, King of Freedom.” Their dancers wore costumes designed on the theme: “Our Belize Land: So Free, So Rich and So Blessed.” The Fantasy Explosion Mas Band followed, led by Queen Issoria and King Papilion” in costumes on the theme: “Feisty Butterflies, Ferocious Beasts in the Land of Bacchanal.” The Oceana Wavemakers clean-up crew followed, doing their part to rid the parade route of the plastic trash and drinks containers discarded by those in front. The seventh senior band was the Belizean Jewels, led by “Queen Flora – Mistress of the Secret Garden” and “King Karibe,” with costumes designed on the theme: “The Love Story of Flora and Karibe in the Secrets of the Garden”. King Solear led the Belizeans United band, in costumes designed on the theme “Sacred Wings of Wonder”. Ashley Lucas in her “Queen Quenzel” costume led their second troupe of dancers. The penultimate senior band was the Mystical Version Mas band, led by Pauline Bradley in her costume: “Queen Pasithea – Goddess of Beauty and Rest” and “King Morpheus – God of Dreams” in costumes on the theme: “A Splash of Carnival Beauty”.
