Monday, 19 September 2016 This morning, on the occasion of National Service Day and after paying tribute to the Rt. Hon. George Price at a wreath-laying ceremony in Belize City, PUP Leader Hon. John Briceño and nine Parliamentarians headed to Belmopan to declare their assets at the Office of the Integrity Commission. Briceño had committed early on in his leadership that the PUP would give every support to good government and the restoration of integrity in politics and this morning demonstrated that the PUP is a Party of deeds, and not only words.

THOUSANDS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST CORRUPTION

Monday, 19 September 2016 Today, Monday, September 19, 2016 – two days before we celebrate the 35th anniversary of our Independence, more than 5000 brave teachers marched in protest of our government. They took to the streets of Belmopan, rallied at the Civic Center and stood at the steps of the National Assembly not because of the violation of their contract for salary adjustment. They stood strong against all odds because like the Opposition, the Churches, the privatesector and all right-thinking individuals not wearing red blinders, our teachers want to bring the corruption, maladministration and abuse of finances to an end.

Efforts by the Prime Minister to derail the demonstration were futile. The Education Minister resorted to threats, bullying and intimidation. He transformed himself from a teacher/protester eight years ago when not in government, to a ‘chancey’ low-down politician now that he is in government. Teachers ignored him and gathered in numbers in Belmopan.

No other Union supported them. This is a disappointing indictment of unionism in Belize and a failing grade for the leaders of the other Unions, especially the Senior Managers and public officers’ Union - particularly because these two formed part of the joint negotiating team along with the teachers in wringing the salary increase from the government. For the PSU and Senior Managers to vote to defer their own increase at the request of government while the teachers are holding out is equal to a betrayal. The least that could have been done was to wait and hold out with the teachers. What was the rush to sell out comrades? Their behaviour showed lack of leadership.

Belize is broke –financially. Our precious monies have been squandered in the quest for a third election win. The financial hell-hole that is opening up in Belize is immediate and damaging, if not downright dangerous. No country can pretend that its way of life and its quality of living are not affected when government has no money to provide services and cushion the future.

For Belizeans there is no longer any future.

It’s more of the same, except worse. Our health services are not up to standards.

Our education system is pitiful. Our law and order enforcement is wanting.

How could any Belizean not support those who are protesting for better gov-

ernment? Our government has let us down - let us down in the cruelest way.

Belize fell into a once in a lifetime luck – Venezuela placed at our disposal over three hundred and fifty million dollars. These monies were for us to use wisely to better the living conditions of Belizeans. The only person who has benefited is our Prime Minister. His over-arching ambition to win a third election in seven years has crushed everything else. It has now become a ‘turd’ election, with Belizeans getting the crappy end. Do we have better hospitals and health care? No. Do we have all our young people in primary schools, colleges and sixth form?

No. Do we have massive skill trainings and jobs programs? Absolutely not! What we have is more crime, and more criminals, more poverty, more unemployment, more uneducated youth, more social problems and more hopelessness.

The latest Auditor-General’s Report into one government department has highlighted the state of affairs of the government under which we suffer - three volumes - hundreds of pages chronicling wrongdoing, many clearly criminal, for the purpose of Ministers hustling money. That they are good at! But good governance for the people? Don’t give a damn!

The teachers have highlighted how weak our other institutions are. How could the public officers not want good governance? How could they abandon the very teachers who educate their children? There is a thing called principle. Sadly it is absent from those in charge of the Public Service Union.

Even the merchants whose kind were whipped out of the temple years ago by Jesus swallowed their pride and resisted the siren song of the Prime Minister to say they want good governance to start with a Senate Investigation into the Immigration scandals. Even the churches, frightened by the ease in which immorality has forced itself into our society, found the testicular fortitude to gather in Belmopan. These are conservative people. Yet they came out.

Belize is in trouble. Belize is not getting better. Everyone knows that. It has taken the humble, yet brave teachers to make the call. That call is for a better Belize. We cannot have a better Belize without good government. These teachers supported Dean Barrow back in 2005 and 2008 hoping he would do better. He has done worse.

DRUNK & DISORDERLY? Monday, 19 September 2016 As we go to press tonight there are credible reports that a group including very senior members of the United Democratic Party but excluding the Deputy Prime Minister, Patrick Faber, have planned a closed-door session to determine his fate. On Saturday, along the route of the Carnival Road March, the Deputy Prime Minister was observed in a highly intoxicated state. Sources say he was behaving improperly with multiple women in front of the popular UDP hangout, Brad’s on Central American Boulevard. Faber, who is also the Chair of the newly convened Public Morality Commission, was caught on camera kissing at least two separate women in front of shocked onlookers.

While Faber’s private behaviour is his own business, he has caught the attention of older heads in the UDP who say that he is too immature to be leader, or even Deputy Prime Minister, and that he has become a liability to the Party. Just weeks ago Faber was the center of a scandal in which his $130,000 government-SUV was immersed in the sea and destroyed. Credible sources say that Faber was drunk just prior to the incident, and Police sources tell us that before their investigation was squashed, they had determined that the incident was the result of a domestic dispute between Faber and one of his “companions.”

Faber has come to the attention of Police before, when his then girlfriend visited the Ladyville Police Station to report that he beat her in a drunken, jealous rage, breaking her phone and punching her in the face.

While that report was subsequently withdrawn, even Faber would not deny that there was a domestic altercation, and not his first.

The Deputy Prime Minister has also been in the media spotlight for damaging his then wife’s car during a drunken rage, throwing a cement block through the windshield, and for other incidents in which Police had to calm him down and get him out the area.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow has coddled Faber through all these ‘episodes,’ but reliable word to the Belize Times is that he has come under increased pressure in the Party to either control his Deputy Prime Minister or take the necessary action.

The Belize Times attempted to get a response from Faber via text, but not surprisingly, he did not respond.

every year, so the more likely reason for the UDP’s refusal to act is that Ministers would find it hard to explain how they became millionaires in the blink of a political eye.

The PUP has also pushed for the formation of a REAL Public Accounts Committee to replace the political version which serves no purpose except that of the government. The UDP has resisted that as well, since it would mean serious oversight of this administration’s actions. The PUP has supported the call for the 13th Senator and has committed to pushing, along with the social partners, for government to sign onto the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

All fifteen PUP Parliamentarians, Area Representatives and Senators, have committed to following the rules of the Integrity Commission. Former PUP Leader Francis Fonseca had already declared his assets, and four Parliamentarians who were unable to make it to Belmopan today will do so in the very near future. It is too much to hope that the UDP would have done so and led by example, and it is perhaps too much to hope that they will follow the example of the PUP set today. Unfortunately, it has been shown that integrity is not the forte of this UDP administration.

Monday, 19 September 2016 On the eve of the carnival road march, the Soca Moca Masquerade Band suffered shocking tragedy when the house they regularly use as their base of operations fell on top of about 15 revelers in the group. The homeowner is Marsha Smith, better known as the “Mud Lady,” who carefully prepares the mud which Jouvert goers smear all over themselves in that early morning event. 39 year-old Deborah Humes, who was an active part of the band, was working along with the other victims to finish up last-minute preparations for the Soca Moca band.

Marsha Smith’s home took a beating during Hurricane Earl and they were waiting for assistance to make repairs. Until then, the family and friends had to continue using the house as per normal. Unfortunately, on the evening of Friday, September 16, the house’s stilts gave way and it collapsed. The 15 or so revelers preparing costumes in the open space under it were trapped under it. It was a terrifying experience for those who suddenly had the entire weight of the building pinning them down. Humes suffered the most serious injuries when one of the crossbeams crushed her. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and extracted her as fast as they could.

She was rushed to the KHMH where the doctors tried to save her life but a few hours later she succumbed. It’s a terrible accident which has caused the residents of Dolphin Street and members of the Soca Moca Band to point fingers at the UDP Government, accusing them of neglect due to party politics, since Smith’s family is known to support the PUP. According to family members, they visited NEMO repeatedly to ask for assistance because of the damage the home sustained from Hurricane Earl, but six weeks after no assistance had been received. They feel they were ignored, or left for last, simply because of Party affiliation.

Whatever the reason, the entire neighbourhood is now mourning the loss of Deborah Humes, and they competed in the Carnival Road March as the defending champions with the pain of her death on their minds.

Questions to Ministers

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please say whether he has quietly and discreetly returned Dorian Pakeman to office despite telling the nation that Pakeman is on unpaid leave until the Office of the DPP instructs the Police if charges should be levied on him?

Would the Member for Queen Square and Prime Minister please say if he has been able to determine what his niece was doing in a known marijuana den when she was shot twice last week?

Would the Member for Collet and Deputy Prime Minister please say whether he thought it appropriate that he should be heavily intoxicated in the Carnival March, spanking passing women on their rears and even taking time to exchange sloppy kisses with at least two different women in front of the large crowd?

Would the Member for Collet and Deputy Prime Minister be willing to admit that he appears to have a serious drinking problem and it paints a very unpleasant image of the country that he is the DPM? Would the Member for Belmopan explain what he means when he says he is now going to ‘flex’ in that constituency, and also say why he has suddenly decided to reappear on the political scene after being on the down-low after the William Mason scandal?

Would the Member for Belmopan please say why his franchise the Belmopan Bandits, seems to be going through a serious financial crunch in the past couple months?

Could he further say whether this has anything to do with the fact that there is no more money being pumped into the team from William Mason?

Would the Member for Belmopan please say whether it is true that his US Visa and the US Visa of his sister, former Immigration CEO Candelaria Saldivar have been revoked?

On the eve of his passing, this great man must be turning in his grave to see what this UDP administration has done to his beloved country even as we get set to celebrate his legacy to all Belizeans, Independence. Dean Oliver likes to talk about things you can take to the bank and cash…well TEK DIS, DOB, you will never, ever, ever fit in the shoes of the Rt. Hon. George Price. He was a visionary, a builder, a worker, a leader and a servant of his people always.

You are a servant only to yourself and to power. When you leave office you will be remembered for your arrogance, the economic mess you left behind, your neglect and disregard of the Belizean people and the corruption and greed of your Ministers under YOUR watch. You are no George Price, Dean Oliver, not by a long shot…and THAT you can take to the bank and cash.

Lame Duck…

The Commissioner of Police is a lame duck. One talk-show host recently said it best – whenever something important happens in the country where the Police need to answer questions, the ComPol is either out fishing or hunting for gibnut. He never knows anything about anything, maybe because he says that he doesn’t watch news and doesn’t have internet or communication capabilities at his home.

Sheesh! But we just heard a lil shush that may explain why Whylie is so out of it. According to very credible sources, most of his family has left Belize to live in the US and he is only waiting for his papers to be processed before he leaves the jewel for good. Could that be why the ComPol in name only is only taking up space? We believe it is. If Dah Noh Soh! Dih Man Ketch F… Dih same talk show host weh tantalize mih po Commissioner also seh dat ih seem like dih man dah noh really ComPol cause he neva know nothing… dah like Broaster and Chester dah more ComPol cause they always know weh deh happen and deh be proactive and get dih news out. The Pakeman cocaine tampering Police cover-up thing is still as stink as hell. And now sources are telling this humble scribe that Dean Oliver’s proclamation that Pakeman has been sent home on unpaid leave pending a directive from the DPP was just a farce. The Press Office head was allegedly sneaked back into office last week, back at work with nobody the wiser. It’s a slap in the face for the family of the RTA victim who already have to deal with the revelations that somebody tampered with their loved one’s blood to make it look like he was piss drunk. And of course they have to deal with the revelation that the Police seem to have lost the lab certificate which revealed Pakeman had cocaine in his blood. This crap is heinous, serious, and nobody in the government really gives a damn. It’s just business as usual. If Dah Noh Soh! Flex…time to have SEX! I swear dih Ministah from Belmopan wah give mih heart palpitations. Dih man find dih spunks weh mih missing and jump pon Facebook fuh tell everybody dat he ready fuh flex now. EDITORIAL

A

Long Live Belize…

s we prepare to ‘celebrate’ the 35th birthday of our young nation, it is quite clear that there is little or nothing to celebrate, little or no euphoria and little or no September ‘spirit.’ We are a people going through the motions, waving our flags and running wild at Jouvert and taking over the streets for the Carnival…but is there really any sense of real pride and joy and happiness or contentment? With so many challenges facing our small country and facing each of us and our families, what exactly are we celebrating?

Even as I write this, it is in the wake of a terrible tragedy where a young woman was killed and several others badly injured when a house fell on top of them. She and members of the Soca Moca crew were working on costumes for the past weekend’s Road March. The house was leaning, damaged by Hurricane Earl which crossed our shores six weeks ago. Six weeks, and even though they repeatedly asked for assistance none was forthcoming from NEMO. You see, the home belongs to a family which is known to support the PUP. And this government is serious and committed to its mantra of UDP first, UDP second and PUP last.

We are currently in the midst of a serious economic crisis, even though the word recession has never crossed the Prime Minister’s lips. All our industries with the exception of tourism, at least so far, are declining. There is no more oil, and any real revenue from Petrocaribe has dried up. We are importing far more than we export, with the trade deficit widening every quarter. The economy has contracted for consecutive quarters. We are in trouble, more so because this administration appears clueless, even unconcerned.

Ironically, as we ‘celebrate’ Independence, we have recently been subjected by increased threat to our sovereignty from Guatemala. The reality is that we have been forced to cede ground in the Sarstoon where we are now only allowed at the whim and through the largesse of Guatemala. As a country we have been maligned at every turn by a hostile Guatemalan government, and the man entrusted to act on our behalf, our Foreign Minister, seems unsure of his own nationality – whether Belizean or Guatemalan.

Our Police Department, entrusted to protect us and enforce the rule of law, has been revealed as politically infiltrated and corrupt. The on-going William Danny Mason saga has provided a glimpse of that corruption, perhaps going all the way to the then top of the food chain in the former Ministry of National Security. Despite repeated demands, the people of Belize have gotten no justice. Instead the proverbial wagon has been circled to protect those named as having improper fiduciary connection to the man now accused of

heinous murder. As if that were not enough, the Pakeman matter has shown clearly that the Police cannot be trusted and our authorities are not beyond tampering with evidence to protect those connected to the UDP. The Barrow administration has been riddled by scandal after scandal revealing unprecedented corruption at the very highest levels of government. The Auditor-General’s special reports are proof positive that the UDP has institutionalized corruption. Never before has the nation been treated to such an unsavoury spectacle, and the Prime Minister seems to believe with every ounce of his conviction that it will all just blow away if he pretends that it does not exist. Rank, stinking corruption facilitated and perpetrated by members of Mr. Barrow’s Cabinet – but the only official response has been to attack the Auditor-General’s character while again circling those proverbial wagons.

There has been no rest for the Emperor, as his administration comes under fire from the Opposition, the Churches, the unions, the private sector and right thinking individuals all over the country. There is a concerted move to end corruption and to demand good governance at a time when ‘good governance’ has been turned into an oxymoron by this administration.

Thirty-five years of Independence and our systems are crumbling. That is the truth. Crime is again out of control and justice is so rarely served. The foulest murderers walk free because investigators were inept, or rules weren’t followed, or documents and evidence somehow disappeared, like the witnesses who do not trust the Police to protect them.

Thirty-five years of Independence and 43% of our people still live in real poverty. In the Southside many families live in swamps accessed through miles of London Bridges, with no running water and pigtail buckets for toilets. The so-called middle class is no more because so many of us live one shock, sickness or event away from destitution.

Thirty-five years of Independence and more children than ever before have been forced to drop out of schools because education has become so expensive. Many of them have to find work or their families don’t eat.

That is where we are, thirty-five years Independent, in a good country run by bad people. So as we ‘celebrate’ a milestone in our country’s history, it is good to ask ourselves if we have gone forward or if somehow, under this UDP administration, we may have lost more than we gained. I can only imagine that those heroes like the Father of the Nation George Price who fought so hard for Independence and for our country are turning in their graves right now to see what has been done to the nation they loved so passionately and so well.

Que Viva Belize. Long live Belize!

Moving Forward…

Building a Belize That Works Independence Day is an occasion when we as a nation, as a party and as individual citizens can pause and reflect on our past so that we can better understand the present and look with purpose to the future.

Although to many it may seem long ago, it was less than two decades past that the People’s United Party took office in 1998 on a massive wave of popular support, a clear manifestation of the people’s confidence in our Party.

The decade of PUP governance was one that saw Belize enjoy tremendous social and economic change. We carried out nationwide civil infrastructure expansion providing access to affordable, quality education and health care. We doubled the Belizean economy, spent hundreds of millions of dollars in social programs, spent millions in expansion of the University of Belize and in the poorest parts of our country; we spent on people-centered development. On the social side, we fostered meaningful partnerships with civil society, gave greater autonomy to village councils and spearheaded reforms like allowing for the Senate to have expanded representation and expanded power.

There is no doubt that the expansionary policies of the Musa Administration achieved a tremendous amount of good in transforming the Belizean social and economic landscape as well as our way of life for the better. Those policies set the stage for sustainable development.

Regrettably, we did not sufficiently measure up to the legitimate expectations of everyone and in 2008 in FREE and FAIR elections we were defeated. And so it should be in any true Democracy.

Indeed as a Party there were decisions made that were not always in the best interest of our nation and people and went beyond what Belizeans were willing to tolerate. But we have learnt lessons from that past, and today we are a Party which is rising stronger and more determined than ever to Build Belize. We did it between 1998 and 2008 and where our policies were good for Belize, we will do it again, clear in our minds that we must always do the right thing.

For this reason we used the occasion of National Service Day, a day which honours the memory of Mr. Price to present our Declaration of Assets to the National Assembly. It is regrettable that the Prime Minister and this UDP Administration has refused to set up the Integrity Commission, but we in the PUP will not shirk our responsibility and so on the Anniversary of the death of Mr. Price, the Father of our Nation, your 15 PUP Parliamentarians presented our declaration of our assets at the National Assembly. In so doing we fulfilled our commitment to good governance.

Today we have learnt from our past, we have done what we needed to do to accept responsibility for our wrongs and we are moving forward.

Yes, we admit that some of the past actions of the PUP were not all right but neither were they all wrong. As a Party we will continue to review and improve on those successful programs started by our former Prime Minister Said Musa which led to a strong partnership with the private sector and civil society, including reforms that resulted in greater transparency, growth and improvement in the quality of life for Belizeans. We will build upon his accomplishments in education and culture and we will restore a greater focus on uplifting the poor.

Today as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of our independence let us remember that our Peaceful Constructive Belizean revolution is a progressive one. Let us remember what Mr. Price taught us, that together we can build a society of free men and free institutions, where the dignity of the human person and the equal rights and freedoms of the individual must be upheld.

In the very spirit of our Party’s mission, which is to “Serve the People,” let us work together as one people and with the guidance of our Creator achieve that just objective to build a Belize that works for everyone.

Hacia Delante…

Construyendo un Belice que funciona El Día de la independencia es una ocasión cuando como nación, como partido y como ciudadanos podemos hacer una pausa y reflexionar sobre nuestro pasado, para podamos comprender mejor el presente y mirar con propósito hacia el futuro.

Aunque para muchos pueda parecer hace mucho tiempo, fue hace menos de dos décadas que el Partido Unido del Pueblo asumió el cargo en 1998 en una masiva ola de apoyo popular, una clara manifestación de la confianza de la gente en nuestro partido.

La década de gobierno del PUP fue uno que vio a Belice disfrutar de un tremendo cambio social y económico. Llevamos a cabo la expansión de la infraestructura civil a nivel nacional proveyendo acceso viable a una educación de calidad y servicios de salud. Se duplicó la economía beliceña, se invirtieron cientos de millones de dólares en programas sociales, se invirtieron millones en la expansión de la Universidad de Belice y en las zonas más pobres de nuestro país; invertimos en el desarrollo con énfasis en las personas. Por el lado social, se fomentaron alianzas significativas con la sociedad civil, se le dio mayor autonomía a los consejos aldeanos y se encabezaron reformas como la del Senado ampliando la representación y aumentándole los poderes.

No cabe duda de que las políticas de expansión de la administración de Musa produjeron cuantiosos logros positivos al transformar el panorama social y económico de Belice y que mejoraron también nuestra forma de vida. Esas políticas fijaron la plataforma para el desarrollo sostenible.

Lamentablemente, no estuvimos muy a la medida de las legítimas aspiraciones de todo Beliceño y en 2008 en elecciones libres y justas, fuimos derrotados. Y así debe ser en toda democracia verdadera.

De hecho como partido hubo decisiones que no siempre estuvieron en el mejor interés de nuestra nación y el pueblo y fue más allá de lo que los beliceños estaban dispuestos a tolerar. Pero hemos aprendido lecciones de ese pasado, y hoy somos un partido que crece más fuerte y más determinado que nunca a construir Belice. Lo hicimos entre 1998 y 2008 y donde nuestras políticas fueron buenas para Belice, lo haremos otra vez, está muy claro en nuestra mente que debemos hacer siempre lo correcto.

Por esto es que hemos utilizado la ocasión del día de servicio público nacional, un día que honra la memoria del Señor Price para presentar nuestra declaración de bienes a la Asamblea Nacional. Es lamentable que esta administración UDP y el Primer Ministro se ha negado a formalizar la Comisión de integridad, pero nosotros del PUP no vamos a eludir nuestra responsabilidad y así en el aniversario de la muerte del Señor Price, Padre de Nuestra Nación, vuestros 15 parlamentarios PUP presentamos .a declaración de nuestros activos en la Asamblea Nacional. Hoy hemos aprendido de nuestro pasado, hemos hecho lo que teníamos que hacer para aceptar la responsabilidad de nuestros errores y estamos avanzando. Sí, tenemos que admitir que algunas de las pasadas acciones del PUP no estaban del todo bien, pero tampoco estaban del todo equivocadas. Como Partido seguiremos revisando y mejorando los programas de éxito iniciados por el anterior Primer Ministro Said Musa, que condujeron a una fuerte alianza con el sector privado y la sociedad civil, incluidas las reformas que dieron lugar a una mayor transparencia, crecimiento y mejora en la calidad de vida de los Beliceños. Construiremos sobre sus logros en educación y cultura y vamos a restaurar un mayor enfoque en mejorar el nivel socio-económico de los pobres Hoy al celebrar el trigésimo quinto (35) aniversario de nuestra independencia, recordemos que nuestra revolución pacífica constructiva Beliceña es progresiva. Recordemos lo que el Sr. Price nos enseñó, que juntos podemos construir una sociedad de hombres libres y de instituciones libres, donde se debe mantener la dignidad de la persona humana y la igualdad de derechos y libertades del individuo.

Monday, 19 September 2016 On Friday John Saldivar went haywire on his Facebook page, posting that “here in Belmopan the PUP who can win this seat is not yet born. Time fu mek I start flex.”

The Belize Times found that post particularly hilarious in the wake of his waning fortunes as a politician, or even a credible individual in Belmopan lately. In fact, he is the only politician during this term of the UDP to have had his portfolio stripped as a direct result of his actions.

Disgraced former Minister of National Security John Saldivar was removed from that post on August 1, 2016 as a result of an allegedly improper relationship he maintained with William Danny Mason.

That relationship was brought under fiery public scrutiny after the head of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas was found in a vehicle belonging to Mason. When Mason was arrested, he was drinking with a man known to be Saldivar’s right hand in Belmopan, Jesus Castillo. It was also common knowledge at the time that there was a Police standoff in the Belmopan bar where Mason was located because the Saldivar-controlled Special Patrol Unit did not want to arrest him.

According to Prime Minister Barrow, when the shuffle was announced, “I don’t have any scientific evidence for saying this, but the optics make clear that the public perception is that it is untenable for Minister Saldivar to continue to head the Police ministry in the current circumstances.”

Also coming to light in the wake of Mason’s arrest for Kidnapping and Murder was information that quite a few Cabinet Ministers were friends and confidantes of Mason, with introductions made by Saldivar. High-ranking Police Officers who worked for Saldivar as Minister of Police were also uncomfortably close to Mason, creating a scandal, public unease and distrust of the Police which has not gone away with Mason’s arrest.

But Saldivar’s ill-fortunes were apparent long before the Mason debacle, revealed during his so-called ‘big deal’ days. Leading up to that UDP Deputy Party Leader convention, Saldivar displayed much of the same arrogance seen in his post on Friday. His people predicted victory for weeks leading up to the Convention, and pranced around on Convention day, only to disappear without a trace when Saldivar lost by a blowout to his opponent Patrick Faber. Not for money or love could Saldivar get the votes to make him Deputy Leader…

And now he wants to flex in Belmopan. It appears to us here at the Belize Times that Saldivar’s ego is immune to reality. We ask one favour – that he inform us, perhaps via his preferred Facebook, when he starts to ‘flex’ so we can be aware of it. Otherwise we may miss it.

These words remain powerful even today, 51 years after he spoke them in P.G. In fact today more Belizeans live in misery and humiliation and if we really think about it, this is because in many ways we have become more selfish and less generous. We have also become so busy worrying about our own lives that we have no time for others.

As I stand here today in the middle of this cemetery, I wonder what Mr. Price would say about the many graves holding the mortal remains of young Belizeans who have died violent deaths. In the past 5 years since his death more than 500 murders have occurred in this nation, and many of the victims are laid to rest just a few rows from here.

I believe if Mr. Price were alive he would be worried that we have lost faith with the idea that we are supposed to be each other’s keeper?

The Belize he envisioned was a place of great potential and possibility, but more so it was a place where our values were always supposed to be about love for each other. This is why we never stop telling people that our mission as PUP is to serve the People.

Each time we forget our mission, we pay a heavy price.

Instead of less poverty, we have more.

Instead of less violence, we have more.

Instead of more development, we have less opportunity and less progress.

We have to change this and we know that as PUP it is our mission to work for Progress for all Belizeans, especially those who are the poorest

and incompetence.

Every year we come here to remind ourselves of who we are as a Party.

We come here not because we believe Mr. Price is in this grave. We

2016 know he is not. He is with his God now. He did his part and because of his example, we come here to be reminded of what WE must now do. We must now build Belize.

And when we do that we will honor the memory of this man that was not only our leader and father of our nation, but a man who taught us never to forget that the greatest gift of all is for us to love one another.

PM’s Niece Shot at Known Weed Hangout Friday, September 16, 2016 Candace Anderson, the 31 year-old niece of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, continues to receive medical treatment after she was shot twice by unknown assailants.

Police investigations have determined that at around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, she was socializing with several persons at a yard on 7th Street in Belize City, in the King’s Park area. Two unknown men arrived nearby on a motorcycle and one of them immediately went into the yard. He was armed with a gun, and before anyone could react, he fired several shots at the group.

Anderson was most likely not the target, but she was injured by two of those bullets, one to the left leg and another in the abdomen.

She was immediately rushed to the Belize Medical Associates Hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment. Prime Minister Dean Barrow told the media that, “She had surgery and the prognosis is that she would make a full recovery, so we are very thankful for that.”

He said that that his sister, Denise “Sister B” Barrow, was like everyone else, very relieved to hear from the doctor that her daughter had a successful surgery. He doesn’t know, however, what Candace Anderson was doing in that area. Just 2 days before, officers of the Gang Suppression Unit arrested several men from that yard which they say is a base for marijuana peddling.

Whatever the reason for her being there, the fact remains that Anderson, who is a Central Bank employee, became an unfortunate victim of the type of gun violence which residents of the Belize

FIRE-LIGHTER TURNED FIRE-FIGHTER Monday, September 19, 2016 The Prime Minister has been - by his own admission - “seeking to put out fires” within his Government. He has had to bend to the will of the Church conservatives who are pushing for an appeal of the Chief Justice’s decision on Section 53 of the Criminal Code. He also had to pump the brakes and reverse course on the proposed and unconstitutional Joint Select Committee which he insisted should investigate the Auditor General’s Reports on the Immigration Department. His administration could not ignore the public pressure to inquire into those 3 reports which expose clear irregularities if not outright corruption in the way Belizean birthright was sold off by way of visas, nationality certificates, and passports.

Barrow was pushing for a bi-cameral investigation team made up of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, but seeing the dangerous influence that 13 current and former UDP ministers could and would have imposed on such an inquiry, the Opposition People’s United Party called them out and demanded that the investigation be done by the Senate only as is guided by the Constitution. The Unions, the Churches, and the business community all saw the wisdom in allowing the Senate to investigate these reports because it is the only constitutionally recognized body authorized to do so.

With the support of the social partners withdrawn, the Prime Minister had no choice but to back down and give in to the original call of the PUP in the Senate.

Readers should also realise that while he supports it ‘in principle now,’ the Government has yet to use the influence of its senate majority to trigger an urgent meeting of the Senate to tackle this matter. Nevertheless, the UDP Government has been backed into a corner to make concessions here and there for a little over a week, and even “Mr. Good Governance” Godwin Hulse is reportedly not going to be asked to serve on the Senate Committee to investigate the Immigration Department, since it comes under his ministerial portfolio.

Trying to appear suddenly tuned into the concerns of the working class, the Prime Minister called for meetings with the 3 unions representing employees of the 3 major utility companies.

The Belize Energy Workers Union, the Belize Communications Workers Union, and the Belize Water Services Workers Union were in support of the Evangelical Churches who had been demanding that Government appeal the Chief Justice’s ruling on Section 53. They announced that support within a few days of the judgment’s delivery. The Prime Minister met with them on Friday, September 16, eight days after his Government announced that it would appeal. So, the reason for that meeting may not have been much of a reason after all, but it gave the Prime Minister the perfect opportunity to talk to the leadership.

Barrow has conceded publicly that he is trying to ensure that their concerns don’t fuse with the concerns of their sister union, the Belize National Teachers Union, and possibly the PUP, into one collective thrust of civil unrest. That conversation with the utility unions lasted for over 3 hours, and in the afternoon, the Prime Minister still had energy for another round of meetings with the Belize National Teachers Union, the Public Service Union, and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers. His party’s operatives have used the national airwaves to make a big deal of the point that the BNTU have rejected Barrow’s request for a deferral of the last tranche of salary adjustment. They want their 3% increase, so the Prime Minister sat down with representation from all 3 unions to make a proposal. It has not been revealed publicly, so nobody but the unions and the Government representatives from that meeting know the exact content at this time.

Whatever it was, though, it was not enough to deter teachers from demonstrating in Belmopan, only the first of planned strategies including prolonged strike if the Government does not heed the call on the salary adjustment and an end to corruption in this UDP administration.

‘Miss Jane’ Honoured with Order of Distinction Belize City, September 15, 2016 Mrs. Jane Usher Ph.D., founder of the Holy Redeemer Credit Union, received the Order of Distinction when the Government of Belize honoured 20 Belizean patriots for meritorious service to the nation in the annual Tribute to Belizean Patriots awards ceremony at the Bliss Institute last Thursday evening.

‘Miss Jane’ partnered with her husband, Henry Charles Usher to help establish the H.R.C.U. in 1944. From the few thousands of dollars of savings pooled by the union’s early contributors, she and her husband grew the H.R.C.U. into a national institution with thousands of members and millions in assets, impacting the lives of tens of thousands of Belizeans with loans for business, education, housing and health. Miss Jane will celebrate her centenary next year but continues to play an active role in the management of the H.R.C.U! Usher pioneered the notion of women in politics by serving for two consecutive terms as the member for the Pickstock Division in the House of Representatives. The eldest sister of the Father of the Nation George Price, she was also President of the Senate and served as President of the National Women’s Commission during which time Belize adopted the United Nations’ Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). She led a movement to encourage women’s involvement in politics.

As Belize moved towards Independence, she also earned the distinction of becoming Belize’s equivalent of Betsy Ross who sewed the United States’ Stars and stripes, as Miss Jane embroidered the Coat of Arms on Belize’s first flag.

The Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan to Belize, His Excellency Benjamin Ho also received the Order of Distinction for helping to foster development partnerships between Belize and Taiwan in areas of agriculture, education, health and information and communications technology - since he became Ambassador in 2014, and also during his tenure as First Secretary at the Taiwanese Embassy from 1994 to 1998 before he was posted to London.

Meritorious service awards were also presented to 9 women and 10 men. These included Maria Elena Sylvestre, Dalila Norris, Mavis Felicia Nunez, received by Gretel Lashley; Beverly Swasey, Lottie Paulino Flores, received by Etheleen Gladden, Alicia Andrea Harrison, Sr. Josefina Alamilla, Vilma Bailey(RIP), received by Claudette Saragoza, and Geraldine Mai. Musician Bradford Pattico’s award was received by his son, Michael Pattico, while veteran seaman and pilot Captain Lester Gilbert Eiley still had the vigour to receive his award.

Others recipients included Albert Smith, Steven Humes, musician/composer Lucio Alcoser, Mario Muschamp Br. Karl Swift, S.J., Nelson Robinson and Pedro Guerra Mena (RIP) Tourism Police Special Constable Danny Conorquie, who died in the line of duty at the Caracol archaeological site, was also recognized. Carnival ROAD MARCH 2016 Soca Moca Survives Tragedy – Wins Carnival 2016, Jump St. Posse Wins Junior Category

Belize City, September 17, 2016 The Soca Moca Carnival Band defended its title as senior Carnival Road March champions for a second year, while the Jump Street Posse won the junior competition of the road march organized by the National Carnival Committee in Belize City on Saturday afternoon.

Soca Moca had experience personal tragedy in their mas camp the night before carnival when a house already damaged

by Hurricane Earl fell and injured 15 band members putting the final touches on their costumes designed on the theme: “From the Ridges of the Reef: the Mystical Rainforest and the Amazing Barrier Reef.” The worst injured, Debra Humes succumbed to her injuries at the KHMH. The surviving Soca Moca troupers chose to dedicate their Carnival performance to her memory and won the most points from the judges: 465.

Tanisha Slusher in her costume “Queen Aquaria – Goddess of the Barrier Reef” led the first section. Their ‘King Foresio – Ruler of the Mystical Rain Forest’ led the second troupe of revellers.

Second prize went to the Mother Nature’s Creations Band who brought up the rear of the parade; they won 454pts from the judges. Their “Queen Regalia” led dancers costumed on the theme: “Our Diverse Ancestry – Our Panoramic Culture – One People!’. Veteran trouper Leroy Green in his ‘King Afrique” led the second troupe.

Third place went to the winners of the King and Queen competition, the Titans Mas Band. Fifth in the senior bands order, they tallied 432pts from the judges.

Veteran trouper Kim Burgess in her “La Sirene” Queen costume led their dancers in costumes designed on the theme Secrets of the Sea, and Michael Middleton as “King Karkinus” led the second group.

Jump Street Posse Band leader Marina Welcome was delighted when the judges announced that Jump St. tallied 436pts to win the Junior Road March. Their 65 dancers were led by King Fayah Bun and Queen Renata. Welcome said she was inspired by some of the natural disasters like a recent downtown fire and Hurricane Earl, and she felt her band had experienced a rebirth; so she had chosen the theme: “Burn to Emerge” for their costumes.

Second junior prize went to the Collet Royal Revellers who brought up the rear of the junior bands section led by their Queen Polly and King Lionel, in costumes

based on the theme “Protection of Our Jewel.” They won 396pts from the judges.

Third junior prize went to the Sunshine Masqueraders junior Mas band who led the road march with their Queen Gretel and King Hansel in costumes designed on the theme: “Candy Land”. They tallied 361pts from the judges.

The Black Pearl band followed, led by Queen of Life and their King of Sorrow; the Trenchtown Masqueraders led by their “Queen Gia – Goddess of the Earth” and “King Belicenio”. Their costumes were designed on the theme: “Belize - our Tropical Paradise.”

The Pickstock Carnival Band was the fifth junior band, led by their Queen Amara and King Aaron, in costumes on the theme: “A New Day’s Dawn.” The Evolution Mas Band was the first of the senior bands led

by Queen Oona - Queen of the Fairies and Patrick Swasey in the costume of King Viper - the Venomous Dragon” with costumes designed on the theme: “Myths and Legends”.

The Sunshine Masqueraders had chosen the Birds of Belize as their theme, led by Aisha Estrada in the costume of a scarlet macaw parrot – “Queen Ara” and King Pedro”.

The Eternity Mas senior band was third in the road march, led by Melissa Williams in her “Queen Elizabeth II - Queen of Riches” costume and “King Neftuleh, King of Freedom.”

Their dancers wore costumes designed on the theme: “Our Belize Land: So Free, So Rich and So Blessed.”

The Fantasy Explosion Mas Band followed, led by Queen Issoria and King Papilion” in costumes on the theme: “Feisty Butterflies, Ferocious Beasts in the Land of Bacchanal.” The Oceana Wavemakers clean-up crew followed, doing their part to rid the parade route of the plastic trash and drinks containers discarded by those in front.

The seventh senior band was the Belizean Jewels, led by “Queen Flora – Mistress of the Secret Garden” and “King Karibe,” with costumes designed on the theme: “The Love Story of Flora and Karibe in the Secrets of the Garden”.

King Solear led the Belizeans United band, in costumes designed on the theme “Sacred Wings of Wonder”. Ashley Lucas in her “Queen Quenzel” costume led their second troupe of dancers.

IT’S FRIGHTENING!!

In the throes of the general election campaign of last year, an anonymous donor contributed to People’s United Party candidates one very large billboard each. These billboards were well structured and attractive, with all of us ‘representing’ in full blue and smiling as we endorsed our campaign slogan “Power To The People !!” The billboard for me was erected just in front of Geronimo Choc’s business place in downtown Ladyville at about Mile 9. In the photo, I was wearing a “PUP blue” long sleeved blouse. It was up only a few days when late one night someone took a machete and cut my entire visage out of the poster, badly defacing it. I learned that Ladyville Police had caught the culprit, but that reportedly a certain highrolling ex-senator got the Police to ‘stand down’ and allow the perpetrator to flee.

What is not in dispute, and I know this personally, is that the culprit later showed some friends of his the five blue notes which he received as payment, and he boasted of his misdeed.

The culprit is now dead, the victim of gang violence on Marage Road several months later.

I tell this brief tale, because there are suggestions that a certain ex-senator may have been somehow involved in the sordid tampering with evidence in the Pakeman case. Not only did the original certificate of findings on the testing of Mr. Pakeman’s blood disappear, but also some person or persons actually seem to have stupidly added alcohol to the victim’s blood sample. As rightfully pointed out by Mose Hyde and others, the level of corruption in our country is staggering.

It is permeating from top to bottom in our society, and lamentably appears to be throughout the Police Department. Political interference to protect and cover up for even relatively low level government and UDP operatives is incredible but true.

And, yes, it’s frightening !!

I cannot stop there. I also have to comment on the continuing efforts of Minister Godwin Hulse and his boss, the Prime Minister, to bob and weave and to roll around on the paramount issue of the den of iniquity that the Auditor General’s Report has shone the spotlight upon.

The Prime Minister continues to insist that it is fair for three UDP senators and only one PUP senator to sit on the Senate inquiry committee, along with the senators of the three social partners who are represented in the Senate. I must wonder what the complexion would be like if we now had the thirteenth senator, the appointment of whom the Prime Minister has summarily and unilaterally blocked. We look too at Mr. Hulse’s latest iterations, of course recalling that the then champion of truth and rectitude has morphed into the ultimate team player for the Barrow administration. I know not how he can even sleep at night !!

In a September 15th interview he asked the media rhetorically on what ground the unions and so many others are demanding his removal as Immigration and Police minister. Godwin well knows that there must not be even the suggestion of a conflict of interest or the hint of bias in investigating the cesspool of corruption that has been uncovered. He surely knows better, and is just playing the fool.

If he had any shred of decency left in his character he should step down right away. As a matter of fact he ought to have gone long ago. The question, Good Sir Godwin, is not that Belizeans are doubting your ability to oversee the Police department, as you suggest, but whether it is right and just for you to continue to pretend that you can head up both the Police and Immigration offices while both are under the intense scrutiny of the needed inquiry.

Nor is it a question of whether you personally have committed a wrongdoing or crime. Just as John Saldivar had to go as Police Minister, you must now resign or forever be condemned in the eyes of right-thinking citizens.

What part of “You cyan judge youself” do you not comprehend?

Indeed, it’s frightening!!

I could go on and on, but, as is my wont, I keep it brief in making my point. And, in wrapping up for this week, I refer to the comments of Minister Finnegan. He is convinced, and has said so publicly from outside of Cabinet last week, that nothing will come out of the necessary investigations into this cesspool of iniquity and corruption. It’s truly frightening!!!

On Stewardship, Patriotism & Penance!

By: Norris Hall Over the weekend, in most Christian churches all over the world, the scripture reading is taken from the gospel of Luke. It addresses the issue of stewardship. This means the management of property, money or other affairs on behalf of someone else. This includes the State and the responsibility of a government in a modern democracy.

In some churches, in many churches, it was the topic of sermons and homilies. But for some, especially those towing the political line in this country, they are unable to make the link between stewardship and corruption, and its implications for the common good.

This topic is so relevant on the eve of Belize’s 35th.anniversary of its Independence, after numerous years of a people’s struggle out of slavery and then an oppressive British colonial regime of systemic racism, exploitation and the reckless plundering of this nation’s wealth for the enrichment of a monarchy.

The struggles of the people under the leadership of the venerable George Price required commitment and unselfish dedication for the liberation of a people. It required numerous constitutional changes. These included adult suffrage and the eventual lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18, the attainment of self-government and the attainment of independence.

By extension it also meant the removal of the Union Jack, which is still regarded by many people in former British colonial territories as the ultimate symbol of oppression.

The gospel, according to Luke, does not only address the issue of bad stewardship and management but by extension corruption and its resulting evils of greed and poverty. This should be so relevant to all patriotic Belizeans at this time. It is a time when the leadership of the current government tries to create so many obstacles to accounting for its stewardship.

It includes their deliberate failure to re-constitute the Integrity Commission which requires all members of parliament to declare their assets. Next there is the politicizing of the work of the Public Accounts Committee. We also have a Prime Minister functioning in the role not of PM but more in a fulltime role as defence attorney on behalf of his corrupt Cabinet.

They have also tried to kill the messenger in the person of the Auditor General and her exposé on the rampant passport scandal in which the Prime Minister himself and his wife have been implicated. And then we have the most recent attempts by the government to derail in the Senate a constitutionally proper Senate inquiry into this rotten passport and visa hustle by Ministers of this government and a select handful of public officers.

This is all part and parcel of an ever mushrooming immigration scandal. The U.S. government has already revoked the Visas of certain Belize government officials. But they continue to be in their official posts.

Certain high priests of the religious community in Belize are equally unrighteous as they continue to play immoral footsie with this corrupt administration.

Recently they have worked along with the government in trying to create a distraction on the homosexuality debate and other pressing national issues, by working with the Prime Minister in the formation of a ridiculous “Morality Commission.”

Yet, as they preach from their lofty pulpits, they continue to fail to address the rampant corruption and the frightening levels of poverty that is plaguing the nation. It is as if they are not their brothers’ keeper - or not the least among them.

Instead, as was evident, they hold their fingers, not hardened by labour, in the wind and bend with their endorsements of any pronouncements made from the lofty nights of the messianic Prime Minister whether moral or immoral on national issues.

The nationally respected and formidable Belize National Teachers’ Union stood together and stood strong on Monday. In addition to their numerous gripes with the government, they are demonstrating to demand an accounting from this government for its poor stewardship and for the rampant corruption in the Barrow Administration-corruption once described by the Prime Minister as being simply distasteful.

The Prime Minister and his Minister of Education have criticized the BNTU for absenting themselves from the classroom at the expense of students. Is it that these politicians have become so self-centered, so myopic in their personal grip on power that they are failing to see the big picture and refuse to atone for their sins as kleptomaniacs? Throughout the history of this country and in 35 years of independence, no government, no administration has been so mired in corruption, in pilfering, in mismanagement, in scandal after scandal as this one.

What happened on Saturday at the Carnival Road March is just another of many symptoms of a very ill society, symptoms that have been manifesting themselves recently. We are already, as a people, feeling less than joyful because so much is wrong in our little Belize. And then at an event which should be a happy and safe place and time, bottles fly and gunshots ring out and there are reports of chaos, hundreds running for cover, children screaming and hurt in the rush for safety.

Just recently I heard Party Leader John Briceño use the term ‘moral recession,’ and I have to say that it describes perfectly what we as a nation face every day – even, or perhaps especially from our leaders who are to provide an example but instead seem to think that they are above the law. Don’t they understand that lawlessness at any level breeds lawlessness at every level?

There is a distinct malaise which has been gripping our country for some time now and it has overshadowed so much of what we do and so much of what we are. We are an independent nation, yes, but are we an independent people? Are our lives where we want them to be? Are we stable and secure? Have we been able to accomplish what we planned, to realize our goals? Do we feel safe in our little jewel?

Are we content? And here’s a big one – have we simply changed colonial rule and replaced it with a home-grown version which is even more oppressive?

My friends, just look at where we are today, that is all I ask. The simple truth of life in Belize today is that if you are not a UDP Minister or a highly connected official, family member, crony or political hack then your life isn’t where you want it to be. Under this UDP administration, only those who drink the red Koolaid are living well, privy to the perks. Look at John Saldivar’s sister – removed from office over a year ago but sitting at home collecting her CEO salary and all benefits for doing nothing.

Imagine that. How crazy is that?

Two weeks ago the PUP led the charge against corruption, with

thousands of Belizeans marching through Belize City streets to send the message that enough is enough. We as a people and as a country are being suffocated by the massive corruption at every level of this administration. And it is past time to take a stand and draw the line.

This week we will stand with our teachers in solidarity – not as a partisan political movement against the UDP, but as Belizeans. What the teachers are asking is just and fair, and it is a call which has been echoed by the private sector and the Churches and the unions. We know that political infiltration in all these bodies is alive and well. We know that the Prime Minister is an old hand well versed and adept with either a carrot or a stick.

We see the personal attacks and intimidation and attempts to divide and conquer.

But our teachers are not puppets. Like the cane-farmers of the north, the teachers know the meaning of real hard work and commitment. Even as they are being insulted and taunted and threatened by UDP thugs and the Ministry of Education they have taken the decision to stand and stand they will.

My friends, we have the opportunity right now to bring about real change in our communities and country and in the way we are being governed. We have a chance to bring an end to the corruption by forcing this UDP administration to appoint an Integrity Commission. We can play a role in ending corruption by forcing government to sign onto the UN anti-corruption convention. We can ensure that an impartial Senate Committee is appointed to look into the rampant corruption in Immigration.

What we do today will impact all our lives and those of generations to come.

So as we celebrate Independence in 2016, let’s do something more for our country than drink beer and rum and jump up and down behind a truck. Let us continue the movement and stand up for Belize. The time is now.

UNIONS ARE NOT UNITED Contributed United we stand, divided we fall! The meaning of this is clear.

If we stay together then nobody can defeat us. However, if we keep fighting among ourselves over trivial matters, then outsiders may take advantage of our internal weakness. The above statement is true both at micro and macro levels. A large nation can stay free and independent only if the citizens and states of the country stay united. It is said that unity is strength. Similarly, if the members within a family support each other and stand together at difficult times, then no outsider can put his evil eyes on the family.

We all know the story of the old man and his three sons.

When the old man was dying his sons began to quarrel. He asked them, one by one, to break a bundle of sticks tied together. They could not do it.

He ordered the bundle to be untied and then asked his sons to break each stick separately.

They did it easily. This was a lesson for the sons and they never afterwards quarrelled or forgot to stand united. Wealthy people have made themselves poor by quarrels and dissensions amongst themselves.

Millionaires came to grief when members of their families disagreed and set themselves against each other. This is true also of kingdoms and empires.

We know how Alexander of Macedon conquered the Punjab which was dived into several kingdoms. Alexander easily overcame them.

Many of the social, economic, political and environmental issues in our country can be solved if people would

be united as one entity and face the corruption that is haunting us. When our people develop a sense of unity among ourselves, the government that is presently slowly strangling our country with exorbitant debts can be made to get their act together so as to focus their energies on economic development and security of the nation.

The policy of mischief-makers has been to bring about disagreement among brothers in a family; and what is true of a family is equally true of a country. But man too often forgets the truth of the saying, ‘united we stand, divided we fall’.

The trade unions which at one point in our history had been the vanguard against corruption are now shells of their former selves. Gone are the days where the leaders would have had the welfare of their members at heart. Our present PSU leadership seems to be guided by personal decisions rather than the will of the people they are representing. Presently the only union fighting for its members is the Belize National Teachers Union.

Think about it: if the government decides to pay the teachers all or part of the increment, what excuses will the PSU come up with? They have already accepted the government’s proposal for the increment to be withheld until April 2017. If they decide to take industrial action after this, then the government will be on better legal footing. In the end, most of the union leaders are there for the perks and limelight. The workers they represent have now become a meaningless statistic.

COROZAL WELDER CRUSHED BY FLAGPOLE

pole suddenly fell on him.

Was his death preventable? Reliable reports to the BELIZE TIMES are that the Corozal Town Council had a role to play in the tragedy.

Mezquita and the work crew are employed by Ariel Botes Welding. The company was contracted by the Corozal Town Council to erect a large pole, measuring 75.6 feet. On the night of the incident, the team was working on the project, lifting the pole with fork lifts.

The pole was already up in the air, with a rope keeping it balanced, when the rope released and the pole went crashing down. Mezquita could not avoid the pole and it crushed him, killing him instantly.

Mezquita’s family has struggled to deal with this sudden loss. What makes the situation worse is that they are not getting answers for the many concerns that they have. The family believes Mezquita and his work crew did not have the proper equipment for the job which they were doing. The family questioned why the large pole was being erected with forklifts instead of a crane.

Mezquita’s employer Ariel Botes agreed that proper equipment was not in use, but he said that his company has carried out similar and in some instances more difficult work, many times before. He said he didn’t expect such an accident to take place.

Botes did not respond to reports that his company could not hire a crane because the Council refused to pay the higher cost of hiring such equipment.

Another concern from the family is that Botes and his work-crew were contracted by the Orange Walk Town Council. Yet, they had not heard from Mayor Hilberto Campos.

Mezquita was employed as a welder for some 18 years. He leaves behind a wife and two teenage children.

The Police have confirmed to us that they are investigating the possibility of Mezquita’s death being caused by careless conduct. They have prepared a file for review by the Director of Public Prosecution and will await advice on whether or not to lay charges.
