Lucía Santos es arquitecta habilitada en 2023 con MH. Ha estudiado en ETSAM, EPFL y ETSAS obteniendo excelentes resultados académicos. Durante sus estudios trabajó en en NOMOS Architects, Ginebra. Actualmente desempeña su ejercicio profesional por cuenta propia. Fernando de Juan es arquitecto habilitado por la ETSAB en 2023. Durante sus estudios trabajó en varios despachos de arquitectura (AIA, Alegre & Lloveras y Carlos Casanellas). En 2022 recibió el primer premio nacional Architecture Student Contest del grupo Saint Gobain. En 2023 ganó la beca Arquia en la modalidad de concurso. Actualmente desempeña su ejercicio profesional en estudio Herreros.

LAVAPIÉS is a neighborhood in the city of MADRID, an administrative fiction, within the wider neighborhood of Embajadores. It is characterized by being a space inhabited by very diverse social groups and its colorful and lively streets. A third of its population is foreign, “the Tower of Babel is now in Lavapiés”. These neighbors coexist with the punishments that previously populated these streets, as well as with dozens of young and new families of non-traditional structure who seek to grow in a multicultural environment of respect, sharing and solidarity. This population is what builds Lavapiés. These people and their ideals are the only identity of the neighborhood to protect.

A massive transformation for a much better and healthier daily life of citizens of Lavapies is made. Babel is a more self-suficient residential place which encourages self-organization, social relationships and culture of sharing spaces, functions and experiences.

I decided to use a hanging structure consisting of perforated metal beams held in cantilever from a large mast by means of ropes. These beams are separated 6m one from each other and are arranged alternately generating a variable section. Finally, the proposed siding for the space is a ventilated facade of cellular polycarbonate placed vertically alternating with glass surfaces playing with the transparencies according to the needs of the interior space.

Within the overall project, the research and production laboratory building has been developed thoroughly. The value of the project is found in the diversity of spatial situations that occur both in plant and in section. The space is always fluid and dynamic, within the building itself, but also in relation to the rest of the complex.
