specialties, as well as a gourmet kitchen awarded 16 GaultMillau points. The hotel's own nightclub GreenGo is known for legendary parties and its distinguished clientele. In the Palace Spa measuring 1800m2, guests have their senses pampered and an Olympic outdoor pool and four tennis courts are available to them in summer. With the Walig Hut, an alpine chalet dating from 1783, the Gstaad Palace sets standards for a totally new form of luxury. The Scherz family welcomes their guests for this winter season until March 12th, 2017.

With the hotel accounts still in the red, the board of directors dismisses Steudler and Pünter. Wilhelm Michel (1867– 1945), previously at the Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, takes over the management at the start of the winter season 1918/19. Following a share capital increase in 1921 the Palace AG’s financial health gradually improves. The annual results for 1923 show a profit for the first time since WWI.

The railway line from Montreux to Gstaad opens on 20 December 1904. Six months later the line is extended through to Zweisimmen. This marks the start of tourism in Gstaad.

During the second half of the 1920’s the Palace blossoms, along with all hotels across Switzerland. Over Christmas and New Year, the Palace is fully booked on a regular basis. Increased investment is made in summer activities, to spread the demand on the hotel’s capacities.

Already in 1905, the local secondary school teacher Robert Steffen (1878−1923) recognizes the potential for a grand hotel on the Oberbort, Gstaad and buys the first parcels of land. A large part of the necessary funding comes from Steffen’s future father-in-law.

The construction of a large outdoor pool and a first golf course are the joint projects of Gstaad’s hoteliers and tourist board. The pool and the golf course both open in July 1928. The main driving force is Wilhelm Michel, who is president of the tourist board from 1925 to 1931.

In 1911, Robert Steffen establishes contact with potential investors in the French speaking part of Switzerland. This leads to the founding of the “Royal-Hôtel & Winter Palace Gstaad” stock company in Lausanne on 15 December 1911. Steffen transfers the land he has acquired to the company, in return for an 18 percent stake. In April 1912 construction work for the Palace Hotel begins on the Oberbort. Designed by the two architects Adrien van Dorsser (1866– 1957) and Charles-François Bonjour (1870–1961), the project has a budget of 2.5 million Swiss francs, a very large investment.

The world economic crisis is felt across the hotel trade. The strong rise in the Swiss franc against foreign currencies leads to a fall in the number of bookings at the Palace. New attractions are planned to draw in more visitors. The sleigh lift, or “Funi”, up Wispile mountain opens during the winter season 1934/35.

The Palace Hotel opens on 8 December 1913, under the management of Albert Steudler and Hans Pünter. The hotel has 250 beds in 165 rooms, of which 70 have an ensuite bathroom. With a further 20 shared bathrooms, central heating and a hotel telegrapher the investors are aiming for luxury that will satisfy the highest demands. The first winter season is so successful that a decision is made in spring 1914 to extend the hotel. A ballroom (now Salle Baccarat) is added onto the ground floor and is opened in the autumn of 1916.

During the Second World War, the number of bookings falls by half. As a precaution, the Union Bank of Switzerland constructs an enormous vault and shelter under the terrace of the Palace Hotel. The bank’s management makes arrangements to relocate to the Palace if its business locations closer to the borders need to be abandoned. The vault serves to store gold, among other things.

During the First World War the number of guests decreases. The cost of coal for heating rises so sharply that the annual accounts for the war years are consistently in the red. In the summer of 1915 a tennis tournament is held in Gstaad for the first time. The aim is to attract additional visitors. The tournament eventually becomes the Tennis Open Gstaad.

To cover losses, the share capital of the Palace AG is reduced. A true improvement in the situation finally occurs when the Swiss franc is devalued in September 1936. This has a direct effect: The number of visitors rises again.

After the war, the number of bookings rises sharply and returns to pre-war levels as early as 1947. The central heating system is fully modernized and switched from coal to oil combustion. This allows the Palace to half its heating costs in one swoop. The founding congress of the Union parlementaire européenne, one of the most important forerunners of the Council of Europe, is held at the Palace in early September 1947. The congress is organised by Count Richard

Share relaxing moments together with another person in the Private Spa Suite. Sauna, steam bath, lounge corner, pool, two massage tables, shower and a private changing room are available for your private use. The Private Spa Suite is also available for single use.

A visit to the hammam at the Gstaad Palace is a unique experience offering a relaxing journey of approximately two hours. It consists of a harmonious sequence of seven steps over 130 m2. This special ritual begins with a soothing footbath followed by calm, soothing moments in the infinity room. Afterwards a cleansing soap foam body massage awaits the visitor, and subsequently the journey continues with a steam bath and a dip in the flotation pool (photo right) After a break in the private relaxation room, a hydrating oil massage completes this amazing experience.

Coudenhove-Kalergi. For age-related reasons, the longstanding chairman of the board Joseph Diémand (1876– 1952) sells his 45 percent stake in the Palace AG to the notorious speculator Kurt von Jahn, former owner of the Schlosshotel Hertenstein near Weggis. In Gstaad it is feared that the Palace might be closed down. With the support of Gstaad’s general practitioner Fritz Kaufmann (1892−1958) Ernst Scherz succeeds in raising enough capital to buy the shares back. Over the following years he repays all the investors, in order to fully acquire all shares. Following a renovation the ballroom is renamed Chez Maxim’s. During the first half of the 1950’s numerous investments are made: The hotel foyer, the entrance, the bar and the restaurant Le Grill are all redesigned. Henri Jolidon is hired as head chef. Together with Otto Schlegel, who has worked at the Palace as a chef since the winter season 1947/48, Jolidon brings about a significant rise in the gastronomic quality.

The former military shelter built during the Second World War is converted. The space is used to house La Fromagerie, which opens at the start of the winter season 1975/76. The film The Return of the Pink Panther, starring Peter Sellers and partly filmed at the Palace, celebrates its European premiere in Gstaad on 12 September 1975. The longstanding chefs de cuisine Henri Jolidon and Otto Schlegel retire in 1977 . Their successors, another duo, are Peter Wyss and Hugo Weibel. The new restaurant Le sans cravate opens at the end of 1979. With no strict dress code, this provides a more relaxed alternative to Le Grill. In the same year, the indoor pool is refurbished and more closely linked to the GreenGo to enable pool parties.

On 4 August 1957 the first Menuhin festival takes place in the Mauritius church in Saanen. The festival picks up on the tradition of the musical summer concerts, which were held in the Palace from 1942 to 1947, but which had to be abandoned for financial reasons. Gala dinners with international stars are the highlights of the winter seasons during the 1960’s. On 15 February 1964 Marlene Dietrich performs at one such event. “One of the most illustrious occasions in the history of the Palace”, states the annual report. The list of celebrity guests is long and includes names such as Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Ella Fitzgerald, Maurice Chevalier, Gilbert Bécaud, Dionne Warwick and Petula Clark. Soon, Ernst Andrea Scherz joins the hotel on a permanent basis. In 1969 he takes over the management role from his father. The indoor pool is built, along with outdoor facilities, a sauna and a “health centre”, as it was then called. Plans are also drawn up for a night club, to be housed in the same part of the building. This is intended to “confirm the Palace’s position as the centre of all cultural events in Gstaad”, the project concept states. The night club GreenGo officially opens on 22 January 1971. The original furnishings by Teo Jakob remain largely unaltered to the present day, despite several gentle renovations.

At the start of the winter season 1979/80 the first occupants move in to the 21-apartment complex La Résidence. The building is the result of a decade-long planning phase. The first project, launched in 1969, had to be shelved due to the crucial federal decrees relating to the economic downturn of 1972. In 1976 a redesigned version is given the go-ahead. Numerous building alterations are realised during the second half of the 1980’s, starting with the extension of the Grande Terasse and the construction of the conference room Salle Piero. The alterations are brought to a close in 1990 with the redesign of the forecourt and entrance, and an extension to the underground parking. The ballroom Chez Maxim’s is refurbished and renamed Salle Baccarat in readiness for the winter season 1991/92. Andrea Scherz begins work at the Palace in the summer season of 1996, initially as chef de réception. This heralds the start of the third generation’s involvement in the company. Les Chalets du Palace are completed in the same year. The first Gstaad-Symposium provides a framework for informal meetings with personalities such as Margaret Thatcher and Peter Ustinov. After the end of the cold war

49 50

At an extraordinary general meeting on 21 January 1974 the share capital of the Palace AG is restructured. In view of Ernst Scherz’s succession planning, voting shares are introduced to strengthen the family-owned character of the business. Ernst Andrea Scherz is made president of the alliance The Leading Hotels of the World. Under his leadership (to 1989) the consortium of leading luxury hotels expands to include numerous hotels outside Europe.

the series of talks – inspired by Spectator columnist Taki Theodoracopulos – reflects on the 20th century. Andrea Scherz takes on the role of general manager at the start of 2001. At the same time the long-standing director Hansruedi Schaerer retires after 43 years of service. In December 2000 the spectacular penthouse suite is completed, followed by the tower suite in December 2001. Thierry Scherz co-founds the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, which will enrich the winter season with concerts on an annual basis. In 2003, the restaurant Le sans cravate is renamed Gildo’s, after the long-standing maître d’hôtel Ermenegildo Bocchini (Gildo)and in 2007 The Spa is redesigned and vastly extended. The new wellness area comprises 1800 square metres. In 2008 the Palace is linked to the district heating network Saanen–Gstaad. As the network’s biggest consumer, the Palace is an important patron of the project. The hotel itself and four neighbouring buildings are heated with renewable energy from locally sourced wood. On July 1, 2014, Thierry Scherz dies unexpectedly. He leaves behind his wife Martina and his eigth- year-old twin daugthers. On October 1, 2016, Franz Faeh takes charge of the hotel kitchen, together with his sous chef Luca Gatti. After more than 30 years, this heralds a new culinary chapter at the Palace. For those who are passionate about jewellery, who like to travel, and are interested in access to exclusive events, here is a best-kept secret: Adventures in Art.

Skidmore College and studying History of Art in England, combining the two passions was a natural step.

It is beyond the promise of a trip to exciting places with like-minded people and in style; it is a unique experience. It feels like reuniting with friends who share the same passion, but instead of queuing up at must-see tourist attractions, your small group will be whisked off to private viewings around town and be granted the chance to meet with main players, experts and curators from the high jewellery scene. The day trips are entirely organised around a theme (the jewellery heritage of a city; the main art fairs or events on the jewellery calendar – Masterpiece London or Couture week in Paris), offering a rich programme of topical activities. Last but not least, you will stay in the best hotels, eat in the best restaurants, even at the home of a private jewellery collector from the city you are visiting. Past travels have included Rome Itinerary: From Etruscan Gold to Bulgari Gems, (June 2015) which among other interesting missions, included a visit to Bulgari headquarters to see the design centre and high jewellery gem selection with Lucia Silvestri, Bulgari Artistic Director; Jewels of India (January 2016) with an itinerary that reads like a mesmerising odyssey into maharaja land: Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Delhi; Jewels of Russia (May 2016) where highlights were an exclusive visit to the Diamond Fund (an astounding collection of jewels belonging to Russian monarchs begun in 1729 by Peter the Great); a visit to the Shuvalov Palace, (the newly opened Fabergé Museum featuring the Link of Times Foundation collection owned by Russian entrepreneur Viktor Vekselberg); and the Ilgitz Fazulzyanov 150-piece Retrospective Exhibition at the Assumption Belfrey, ‘Jewels Inspired by Nature’ and a visit to Fazulzyanov’s workshop under the guidance of the maestro himself. All of this is of course only possible because of the trustful connection built by the founder of Adventures in Art with jewellery insiders over the years. Her name is Karen Stone Talwar and the best description of what makes her the ideal travel companion is given on her website. It says: Based in New York City and Europe, Talwar has lived in London, Paris and Lausanne and has travelled extensively through Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Her passion for travel dates back to her early trips as a child. Each June her parents would take her to various parts of the world on education explorations! By the age of 18, she had seen 32 countries, including Jordan, Iran (as far down as Isfahan), Egypt, Russia, Turkey, the Iron Curtain countries and most of Europe. After graduating from

63 64

What it does not say is that Talwar is also friendly and caring, with great organisational skills and is inherently elegant; in other words she has all the attributes of the perfect hostess or the person you would like to be sat next to at a prestigious dinner. So, a serial globetrotter from a young age, what attracted Talwar to the jewellery world? How did she decide to combine the two? And most importantly how can one join this select camaraderie club? Talwar has kindly agreed to answer our many questions. Olivier Dupon - Would you please tell us a bit more about yourself (career path)? Karen Stone Talwar - I was born in Massachusetts and right after my schooling I immediately headed to NYC. My first career path was in the graphic design arena and eventually I moved to Paris to join a French perfume “bottle/ flacon” design company by the name of Raison Pure. There I worked on many assignments (marketing) and eventually opened up their USA office, working with Revlon, Estée Lauder and others in the beauty industry. In 1988 I went to London to do the Sotheby’s Decorative Art Course and this truly changed my life. As life would have it, I married an Indian man and India became a true focus for me since the year 2000. I have been going there every year since, and the past five years have been spent organizing art and jewellery trips to India. In 2011, I was asked to join the Asia Society as their Director of Patrons; this was also a life-changing event for me because I was asked to organize their Patron Travel programmes. My first assignment was South and North Korea and then Mongolia. It was this job that truly made me want to begin a company that specialised in travel and art. I saw how individuals enjoyed the company of like-minded people – travelling together and for a purpose. So I started Adventures in Art in 2011 and then Christie’s London asked me to move to London to create a department for them, Christie’s Travel, in association with Abercrombie and Kent. Sadly they closed the department and so I resumed Adventures in Art again in 2014.

I love to think of jewellery as an art expression and an art form. I often wear a great deal of black so jewellery is my decoration, my statement.

Throughout my adult life, I have had the great fortune to travel constantly and I have lived in NYC, Lausanne Switzerland, Paris and London. OD - What type of jewellery person are you? KST - I love jewellery and I have had the great fortune of spending time with many of the top jewellers of the world. I love to think of jewellery as an art expression and an art form. I often wear a great deal of black so jewellery is my decoration, my statement. I love to go to consignment shops – faux jewellers – Indian jewellers and now and then treat myself to a fine piece. OD – What is your favourite piece of jewellery? KST - My favourite piece is a ring that Lorenz Baümer designed for me about 10 years ago. It was my engagement diamond. I asked him to please put it in a form that I could wear both on the subway and to a black tie event. I brought him a silver ring I found in Santa Fe and told him I really liked this large form. He put the diamond in a hand carved rock crystal and added diamonds to the base. I met Lorenz years ago in NYC when he was just starting out; since then I have followed his work. OD - What personality traits do you have that have led you to where you are today? KST - I would say I’m meticulous and experience-driven. I have focus and want to create a trip experience that travellers could not get anywhere else ...so I guess competitive as well. OD - What sparked the idea for Adventures in Art? KST - It began when I was planning patron trips for the Asia Society… I saw how people enjoyed traveling with like-minded individuals. I had a passion for travel, new ventures, and new friendships, so it was born out of wanting to leave the corporate world and creating a career around my two passions: travel and art! OD - Described as a ‘boutique among boutiques’, how does Adventure in Art work? KST - I wanted to create a small exclusive “boutique” that would be a difficult area to recreate. It would be like wearing a couture dress – you could only have this if you went to this designer, you would be one of the few to experience this. I like to say that a hotel concierge could not create this experience since it is built on relationships. OD - Can anyone participate or is it restricted to connoisseurs / insiders only? KST - Hard question to answer! You would have to be on my mailing list to know about the trips, but if I receive an enquiry following a word-of-mouth referral or in response to an individual reading about Adventures in Art in the press, I do respond. On the other hand, when it comes to museum trustee/patron groups, the museum makes the decision on which patron group they offer the trip to. OD - Does Adventures in Art exclusively focus on antiques or do some include modern art as well? KST - We focus on art, jewellery, and architecture; for instance if we go to India for a jewellery trip – we focus on jewellery but, of course, visit architectural sites such as the

I believe that jewellery is an art form. More and more museums and art fairs are featuring jewellery in their collections and exhibits.

Taj Mahal. So in our Rome Jewellery Trip, we covered the range of jewellery from ancient times to Castellani and, of course, Bulgari, and ended the trip with the contemporary jeweller Princess Lucia Odescalchi. OD - How do you curate the programme for each trip? KST - I begin by thinking of the destination, then I try to evaluate if Adventures in Art can design a truly special trip studded with amazing “signature moments” – for example the Paris Biennale. Of course, you have museums that have some great jewellery, but I also need to be sure that I have collectors that would open their homes, jewellers that would bring out some of their creations, that I could offer venues that could only take place with private entrée’s. On other occasions I will design the trip around a great exhibit or an event like the Paris Biennale, Maastricht, Art Basel or the jewellery sales in Geneva. OD – In your view, what is the part played by high jewellery in the world of art and antiques? KST - I believe that jewellery is an art form. More and more museums and art fairs are featuring jewellery in their collections and exhibits. Look at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, JAR at The Metropolitan Museum in New York City and the wing of the Victoria and Albert. Also look at Maastricht and Masterpiece Art Fair. OD - What is Adventures in Art’s approach when it comes to high jewellery that is exhibited at art fairs: is it presented as a question of financial or rather emotional investment? KST - I would like to think great art falls into the hands of great collectors, that there is passion fuelling acquisition. So, yes, if it is a major purchase one needs to have done the homework on the financial quality, but at the end of the day it is an emotional investment that should hold its value. OD - In Adventures in Art’s approach to high jewellery, does craftsmanship precede creativity or the other way around? KST – A hard question to answer. Great creativity needs great craftsmanship. I refer to two jewellery designers, Wallace Chan and Hemmerle; their creations are just beautiful, but the craftsmanship has to be there to able to work on wood, unusual background, metals, carvings etc. OD – In your opinion, how do the antique fairs compare (Masterpiece London, La Biennale des Antiquaires Paris and TEFAF Maastricht, for instance)? KST - Overall, I have to say that I am thrilled that art fairs have jewellery exhibitors amongst the old masters, furniture, ceramic exhibitors. Each fair you mentioned is a top worldwide fair. Some of the jewellers show in 2 out of the 3 fairs. It is hard to compare the fairs as they are all attracting a worldwide collector base. Even now TEFAF Maastricht will open for the first time in NYC. So, a collector who cannot get to, or find accommodation in Maastricht, can now go to NYC. OD - What are your predictions about private luxury travel?

KST – I believe that people who can afford to travel well also want the education and in-depth experience to go with it. Anyone can book a five plus star hotel; however, what they cannot do is have dinner at the home of an artist, or see a jewellery atelier. So, distinctive and memorable experiences are being sought. Look at some of the luxury jet companies: they now offer around-the-world culinary jet experiences. OD - In a world that is so overly connected (it is indeed increasingly difficult to find a location that has not been ‘instagramed’), how do you preserve rarity and confidentiality for each Adventure(s) in Art? KT - If we are at a collector’s home or they are showing us some of their treasures, I always ask clients not to photograph/instagram/tweet about it. At the end of the day, my connections are built on years of building relationships. And on the other hand, collectors obviously care about security, as well as privacy.

OD - What is the best advice you would give someone when it comes to choosing his or her fine and high jewellery? KST - I would say research, research, research. Study and read about the period you are buying, know your stones, know jewellery makers’ marks, and study past auction catalogues. Go to the various jewellery boutiques, go to auctions, and go to jewellery exhibits. OD - How do you define “wearable art”? KST - All jewellery is wearable art because it expresses itself in an art form one can wear. We can also look at wonderful artists that have made jewellery specifically to wear, e.g. Picasso, Anish Kapoor, Dali, Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, etc. Many times those artists and dress designers are thinking outside of the box – so rather than a 2D object, a 3D object is created, one that you can wear. www.adventuresinart.com

OD - What would be a dream destination for your next edition of Adventures in Art? KST - I would love to do a trip to Iran to see Farah Diba’s Jewellery Collection and visit the historical sites of Tehran, Persepolis, etc. I just would have to be 100 percent certain it is secure. I had the great good fortune of visiting this destination when I was a young girl in 1974 and that trip will stay with me for a lifetime! OD - What is the best memory you associate with Adventures in Art so far? KST - My best memory is when I come home from a trip and begin to receive the thank you emails – “best trip ever”, “where is the next trip”, “can I organize a reunion in Paris at my home”, “Can I invite everyone in London to an opera evening”. To see like-minded people wanting to stay in touch and wanting to travel to new destinations with Adventures in Art is a blessing. OD - If you could own a piece of art, which one would it be? KST - I would want to own a Fabergé Egg. It holds such history; they are rare and beautiful jewel-like objects and, for me, a true art form. I could also travel with it. Ideally I would love it to be one of “the lost eggs” and be able to exhibit it for the world to see.

Finnair’s distinctive intercontinental Business Class menus have been globally awarded several times. Every meal is completed with a high-quality selection of beverages and award-winning wines.

Finland including restaurants such as Chez Dominique, Luomo, G.W. Sundmans and Olo. “Eero has fast become one of the best chefs in Scandinavia and we are very excited to offer our long-haul business class passengers with his exceptional food,” says Maarit Keränen, Head of In-Flight Service at Finnair. “With next year marking Finland’s centennial anniversary, it’s a great opportunity for us to collaborate with Finland’s candidate for the Bocuse d’Or competition. We’d like to wish Eero all the best as he sets his sights on the final preparations for the prestigious event in January.” “Throughout the past few years, I've been fortunate enough to have the chance to work with many top chefs and I’ve learned a wide variety of ways and views on food through these experiences,” says Eero Vottonen, Finland’s candidate for the 2017 Bocuse d’Or competition. “The philosophy I bring to cooking is actually quite simple, the flavor always comes first and I want to use quality ingredients that are sourced from nearby suppliers.”
On board the Finnair A350, business class passengers enjoy the A350 signature drink, Blue Sky, which is a mix of French champagne and Finnish blueberry liquor. The beverage pays homage to the pure Finnish nature and to Toulouse in France, which is the home of Airbus where the A350 was made.
Tableware and textiles specifically designed by iconic Finnish design house Marimekko for Finnair add a distinct and light Nordic touch to the cabin. Passengers benefit from noticeably cleaner and fresher cabin air thanks to the advanced air filtering system which changes the cabin air every 2-3 minutes. Draft-free air conditioning, adjustable temperature zones, and the cabin air pressure, which is closer to the sea level air pressure, adds to greater passenger well-being and comfort. In addition, passengers also enjoy a quieter flight than on previous aircrafts. New engines, created by Rolls Royce exclusively for Airbus, reduce noise both inside and outside the airplane, making it easier to rest onboard. London at Ten Trinity Square Nearly a century in the making, JH Travel visits the Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square, the global luxury hospitality leader’s second hotel in the city, and a prestigious addition to its collection of historic properties.
A Grade II-listed heritage building, Ten Trinity Square building covers a 1.2-hectare (three-acre) city block, forming a hollow square with The Rotunda in the centre. From the time of its original design as headquarters of the Port of London Authority, there was a focus on providing an abundance of light to the interiors, and that priority has continued with the present transformation into a Four Seasons hotel. In this international capital of business and culture, Four Seasons offers a remarkably central location, ideal for business travellers who need to be close to corporate headquarters in the City of London, and for leisure guests who want to be close to famous landmarks. Nearby sites include the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Globe Theatre. “In this landmark of power and prestige, we plan to introduce a more intimate, personalised experience for international travellers as well as local guests,” says General Manager Charlie Parker of this important building’s transformation into a luxury hotel and residence. “In the story of Ten Trinity Square, a new Four Seasons chapter in London is about to unfold.” Luxury Accommodations
