GREETINGS Salâm! (I learned how to say hello in Farsi at ICON) I hope you’re all having an absolutely fantastic summer! I know I am. I was lucky enough to go to International Convention in Washington, D.C. hosted by the Capital District and that was a remarkably wonderful experience. I hope that more of you are able to go next year; it’ll be a lot cheaper since it’s in Anaheim, CA hosted by the great California-Nevada-Hawaii District! Anyway, with summer already halfway over, Key Club work should be going into full swing with lots of summer service projects as well as planning for the upcoming school year. It makes me giddy inside to see pictures on Facebook of all of the cool service projects that you’re all participating in! Keep them coming! I am pleased to announce that Seattle Rally 2013 will be once again hosted by Division 32 at Hazen High School in Renton on August 12th, 2013. More information can be found in the newsletter on page 8. I hope to see all of you there! The DCM will be on July 19th, 2013 and there will be a Presidents Council Meeting preceding it to discuss club goals that should have already been made well in advance. If you have any questions regarding any of the new articles in this newsletter please contact me and I’ll gladly answer any questions you may have. In Love and Service,

Alan Yeh

Lieutenant Governor of Division 32

district project:

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally ter-minate MNT. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too. Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FUND WHAT IS THE YOF? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships.

Assist the Tijuana Project: three orphanages in Baja, Mexico. The club would take basic necessities such as shampoo, undergarments, soap, and other necessities for the orphans in three orphanages. They would also purchase toys and school supplies for the orphans and put them inside of backpacks and deliver them to the approximately 150 children in the three orphanages.

YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world. Key Clubs have applied for grant funds to support a variety of service projects

HOW TO APPLY YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 each year. Clubs may request funding assistance from $100 to $2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. Notification of the Key Club International Board’s decision will be mailed no later than January 15. Applications must be submitted to: Kiwanis International 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN USA, 46268 OR fax your application to 1-317-879-0204.

The YOF Grant application is included in the Downloads section of the Key Club Web site under Service. The guidelines for filing the application are in the Guidebook under Board Policies. Please review them before completing the application.

SEATTLE RALLY 2013: SERVIC

Division 32 is o It is with great pleasure that I invite you to Seattle Rally, 2013 on Monday, August 12th 2013! Division 32 is wholeheartedly honored to be able to host such a marvelous event. I hope you will join us in Renton and see what we have in store! The purpose of Seattle Rally is to first and foremost, train incoming officers and acquaint them with their responsibilities. Second, we want to encourage spirit and excitement for the great opportunities that Key Club has to offer. Lastly, we want to encourage and promote the great opportunities not only at the club level, but at the District and International level as well. Since Club officers play an essential role in leadership and service, we have selected former officers and current district board members to lead informative and entertaining workshops on the duties of the officer roles. Whether your members are a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, or Bulletin Editor, they will find an opportunity here to fulfill their goals. They will walk out more informed and ready for the upcoming school year. The possibilities are endless after they hear from our forum leaders of the greater Seattle area to create stronger and more involved leaders. Seattle Rally is an energetic bonding time for everyone in attendance, somewhat like a miniature District Convention. Get your entire division and club ready, and go all out on spirit gear! Your group might just be the most spirited of them all and could win the illustrious Seattle Rally spirit stick! Registration will be online and medical forms must be turned at the door. The early-bird registration fee is $5, regular registration is $6, and at the door is $7 for any registration after the regular registration deadline (TBD) See you then!

The convention itself was full of informative workships, new friends, and inspiring leaders. Good luck to all of the newly elected international board members and PNW’s very own Kelsie Hoppes. I can’t wait for ICON 2014 in Anaheim, California!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT DRAGON OF THE MONTH MORGAN LUCENA

CLUB: Lindbergh High School BIRTHDAY: February 4th, 1997 GRADUATING YEAR: 2015 FAVORITE COLOR: Pink and Purple FAVORITE BOOK: I love all the books on my bookshelf FAVORITE SONG: Basically anything KPOP FAVORITE FOOD: KBBQ and Sushi! FAVORITE QUOTE: “If you light yourself on fire with passion, people from miles away will watch you burn.” – Key Clubber who told this to Hakikat Bains GUILTY PLEASURES: Touching cute guys, obsessive fangirling over cute guys and male KPOP idols, and reading fluffy romcoms on AFF POSITIONS HELD: LHS President 2013-Present

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? My late grandfather, Honesto Almario, was an amazing leader and made a difference in his hometown. He was the Barangay Chairman in Quiapo, a district in the Philippines. I was very young when he passed so I never really got to build a close bond with him. I didn’t feel that sad when I first found out about his death, but now I cry whenever I think about him because I regret not being able to get to know him better. If I could spend a day with anybody, I would choose my Lolo Honest (what I called him) to bond, to talk, to laugh and to build the relationship I always wanted to have with him. What is your spirit animal and why? My spirit animal is a Pegasus. because I always wanted one as a pet so why not become your own pet? LOL I like them because they’re beautiful, graceful, majestic, powerful, and breath taking. Plus a Pegasus has wings and I want to be able to fly around and see the world’s beauty. Why do you love Key Club? I love Key Club for many reasons. I love how Key Club focuses on making a difference in people’s lives, be it through volunteer work or just plain encouragement and kind actions that can morph anybody into the most outgoing and caring citizens our world needs. I love how Key Club brings strangers together to make one gigantic family full of fearless leaders that share the passion of service. I love how Key Club is the home of the most caring and loving people who would drop whatever they’re doing just to lend a helping hand. I love how Key Club is the main way I get that warm feeling of happiness and accomplishment after a long day’s work of volunteering. But most of all, I love how Key Club has changed my entire life for the better. I truly love Key Club like no other.

12

Why Morgan? From the very beginning of her term, Morgan has showed profound commitment to her home-club, school, and community. Her continued dedication has been truly an asset to the success of her club; through service projects and summer meetings, Morgan and the rest of her club have maintained a good reputation in the city of Renton. Moreover, her passion for Key Club is inspiring as she strives to improve her club and do anything it takes to win the Dragon Cup for Lindbergh’s Key Club.
