GREETINGS Greetings my wonderful division! I hope the new school year has been treating you well and that you’re not feeling too overwhelmed by the simultaneous influx of school work and Key Club work. Stay on top of things. You can do it! I know you can! October is here and do you know what that means?! Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! If you ordered them in September, you should have received your UNICEF boxes by now. I hope all goes well with your fundraising. What are your club’s plans for UNICEF? Let me know! I’d love to hear some of your great ideas. Every year, Hazen High School does a jamfest during Friday lunch where students check out boxes perform like street musicians and onlookers can donate to whoever they wish. It’s a fun time, it really is. October also means the rush of club dues. Exciting, right? Treasurers, I know your brain is just titillating at the thought of inputting information and sending in money and your heart is just warmed by all of the wonderful new members that are joining. Cheesy, I know. To ensure the proper submission of dues information, I am holding a Dues Party at my house on October 19th. Treasurers and secretaries are invited to come over so we can all send in member information together! I’ll pop in a movie and we’ll party it up like Miley Cyrus (just kidding). Details like my address and the time will be released at a later time. Everyone! Please check out page 9 for information regarding a division-wide service project that I’d like to have. Turkey Baskets is a great service project especially with the oncoming holidays! I would love it if your club participated and contributed to this great cause. The October DCM will be a joint pumpkin carving party with Division 28. Perhaps there’ll be a competition, who knows? More information will be released soon. Until then, happy Key Clubbing!

In Love and Service,

Alan Yeh

Lieutenant Governor of Division 32

YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FUND WHAT IS THE YOF? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The fund also provides academic scholarships for higher education. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through a portion of your Key Club International dues and through the purchase of G. Harold Martin Fellowships.

Assist the Tijuana Project: three orphanages in Baja, Mexico. The club would take basic necessities such as shampoo, undergarments, soap, and other necessities for the orphans in three orphanages. They would also purchase toys and school supplies for the orphans and put them inside of backpacks and deliver them to the approximately 150 children in the three orphanages.

YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world. Key Clubs have applied for grant funds to support a variety of service projects

HOW TO APPLY The newly updated YOF Grant Application is finally out!

YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 each year. Clubs may request funding assistance from $100 to $2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. Applications can be submitted via email, mail, or fax. More information can be found on the application itself. district project:

What is the ELIMINATE Project? The Eliminate Project is a joint project with Kiwanis and UNICEF to internationally ter-minate MNT. What is MNT? In 30 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating– tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too. Who suffers from MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

TURKEY BASKETS

50 POINTS PER BASKET! The club with the most baskets will get 100 Dragon Cup Points! DUE: November 16th

LP A FAM E ! H ILY D IN NEE TURKEY BASKET CHECKLIST 2 boxes of stuffing 2 cans of cranberries 2 boxes of potato mix 2 packets of gravy mix 3 cans of fruit 3 cans of veggies 2 boxes of dessert mix $25 for turkey

As the holiday season is fast approaching and we are giving thanks for all of the things we have, we must consider that there are so many others within our very own communities that are much less fortunate than us. Students in our own schools and their families go without dinner on a daily basis. Imagine eating a moist, delicious turkey and hot apple pie on Thanksgiving; meanwhile, there are families in need, deprived of that same Thanksgiving dinner. Aware of this fact, every year, Hazen High School has a Thanksgiving “turkey basket” drive to give to impoverished families throughout the Greater Renton area. Last year alone, the school made about 207 turkey baskets. I’m requesting for each club to join in on this great service project. Set a goal and accomplish it! I will reward 50 Dragon Cup Points for each complete turkey basket. Think you can handle the challenge?

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT DRAGON OF THE MONTH LISA LAI

CLUB: Lindbergh High School BIRTHDAY: December 15, 1996 GRADUATING YEAR: 2015 FAVORITE COLOR: Light blue FAVORITE BOOK: The City of Bones (His Mortal Instruments Series) FAVORITE SONG: “Honeymoon Avenue” by Ariana Grande FAVORITE QUOTE: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” -Dr. Seuss GUILTY PLEASURES: Barking like a dog POSITIONS HELD: LHS Secretary 2013-Present

If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? I would spend it with Ariana Grande because she is my favorite singer and she is an inspriation to me. What is your spirit animal and why? Umm.. I would have to say a dog because I have an obsession with dogs as you can tell by my guilty pleasure. They are so fuffly and adorable. Why do you love Key Club? Key Club has taught me to give back to the community and to help out whenever I can. When I was a Freshmen, I was extremely shy and I only joined because of my friends. But as I volunteered throughout the year, I realized that I can make a difference in someone’s life. Their smiles on their face brightens up my day and that helps me gain confidence in myself. I believe that the world may not change within a day, but together we can change it one step at a time. That’s what I love about this organization; it brings students together from all over the world that have one thing in common: service. This organization has changed my life forever and I am proud to call myself a Key Clubber.

14

Why Lisa? Lisa works diligently and efficiently as LHS KC Secretary. She turns in everything on time and has every single detail written down. If I need to know something, Lisa will pull up the information for me in a flash. She never needs me to remind her to do her job and carries out her duties with a smile on her face. Lisa has attended most of our volunteer opportunities and has racked up a total of 121 hours since the first day of April, demonstrating exceptional leadership by setting an example for others to follow. Lindbergh’s Key Club will definitely not run as efficiently as it does without this amazing officer. Lisa is such a phenomenal, dedicated, and lovely person to be around.
