WELCOME TO THE 2024 DSC CONVENTION & SPORTING EXPO By Conor Harrison

Director of Communications

DSC

10 |

It’s back! The 2024 DSC Convention and Sporting Expo is once again set to take center stage in the hunting world over the next few days. And we are excited to welcome you to Dallas. What brought you here to this year’s convention? Is it to see the almost 900 exhibitors from around the world showcasing the best hunting and fishing adventures? Is it the huge lineup of live and silent auction offerings with everything from one-of-a-kind firearms, world-class art, furniture, clothing, worldwide trips and more? Is it to attend one or more of the banquets, Ladies’ Luncheon or Life Member Breakfast to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones? Is it to catch many of the industry-leading experts giving a seminar on the latest techniques, information or updates on current events in the outdoor industry? Maybe it’s just to get away for a few days with friends and family, enjoying all Dallas has to offer while visiting the world’s greatest hunting convention? Whatever the reason, we’re glad you’re here! Be sure to check out the new DSC Convention App presented by Silencer Central to help plan your adventure while at the convention. We are looking forward to hosting you at this year’s convention. Come by the DSC booth and say hello. We hope you have a wonderful time planning for upcoming adventures, spending time with friends and starting the year off right with Texas hospitality.

Lessons Carved from Ice By Connor Gabbott I can’t count the number of times I have sworn off winter goat hunting while shivering on the side of a white mountain. There is very little enjoyment to be had chasing late season mountain goats. The hunt is a test of will. It requires digging in your heels and patiently suffering the conditions in hopes that everything might align just right so you can accomplish what you set out to do. If I go out for winter goats again this season, it will mark my sixth journey into those mountains for more punishment. I say “if,” but at this point it’s almost a sure thing that I will go. No matter how much I despise those nights spent in an icicle-covered tent or sliding my feet into brittle, frozen boots in the morning, I know I will go back for more. Winter goat hunting in British Columbia isn’t a popular hunt. The general season takes place in a small coastal area on a fjord bordering Alaska. Because of the remote location and the ruggedness of the mountains, the season is long, running from August until the end of February. Due to snow conditions and avalanche danger, most hunters go as late as possible when the snowpack is more stable. Bad snow can make or break the hunt. I have tried accessing that country in every way I can think of: snowshoes, crampons, skis, pulk sleds and pack rafts. It is more mountaineering expedition than traditional hunt. Even with perfect conditions, you will have to fight excruciatingly hard for every inch of ground and foot of elevation to get into the zone the goats call home. Avalanches are a threat to both goats and hunters alike, and are not something to be taken lightly. I don’t like to admit it, but for my first couple of years hunting up there, I lacked proper avalanche training, nor did I carry any avalanche gear. I was extremely foolish, and I was lucky. I have since educated myself appropriately and carry myself into that country with the necessary respect it demands. The endless cold and shear effort involved in a hunt like this is brutal. Battling the constant hunger that eats away at you when frozen bars and dehydrated meals just don’t replace the calories you’ve burned is a slog. I’ve survived these things and then experienced the anguish of having my release freeze at full draw with a long-haired billy standing broadside at 35 yards. At its core, this hunt is the distillation of everything I crave from hunting taken to the Nth degree. There is no faking anything out there, no shortcuts to be found. It challenges my physical fitness, my mental stamina and my ability to learn, adapt and overcome. This yearly pilgrimage helps me understand what I am capable of.

PROFESSIONAL LAKE MANAGEMENT CUTS THE GUESSWORK A lake or pond is the centerpiece of a well-appointed rural retreat. But many ranch and farm owners learn the hard way that maintaining that body of water can seem deceptively simple. “It all starts with your goals for the lake, whether it’s swimming or boating or a fishing hotspot for family and friends to enjoy,” explained John Jones, owner of Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “Many property owners like some combination of all three and our team can turn that dream into a reality.” Lochow Ranch provides turnkey pond and lake management and maintenance services to landowners across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The company also works in partnership with its affiliated company, Shoreline Consulting, to design and build new lakes and expand or renovate existing ones. Some landowners think once a lake or pond has been built, it will naturally take care of itself with minimal maintenance. But that is simply not the case if you want a thriving fishery or a landscape water feature that will maximize the aesthetics and recreational possibilities for a property. “Pond and lake management is best not left to chance,” Jones explained. “A properly maintained pond or lake will grace your ranch or farm with natural

beauty and endless recreation options for generations to come.” Lochow Ranch’s certified team of biologists and water maintenance experts provide the full range of lake and pond management techniques, including water quality and clarity testing and improvement, vegetation control and removal of pond weeds, liming and fertilizing, algae control, erosion and sediment control, identification and control of predators and much more. If a fishery is your goal, Lochow Ranch’s experts bring state-of-the-art techniques and expertise to maximizing your environment for game fish to thrive. The team is known across the South for its electrofishing surveys that yield the most accurate inventory of a lake’s fish population. The company also provides fish stocking, including a full range of game and forage fish, as well as supplemental fish feeders that help spur growth. These professional techniques take the guesswork out of maintaining your body of water and ensure you can make faster progress toward your goals. “We can establish fundamental management practices,” Jones said. “Having that solid foundation can help your lake thrive despite seasonal disturbances and broader environmental

conditions.” For example, many landowners have faced lake management challenges with the recent drought conditions across the region. “These types of issues can create problems many lake or pond owners may not be aware of,” Jones said. “That’s when having a professional management service can become critical in anticipating and responding to the issues before they get out of hand and require more money to fix.” Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas. They manage more than 6,000 lakes across the

region. “Our aim is to help you reach your goals so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful body of water,” Jones said. “We will help you make a personal paradise for the whole family to enjoy for generations to come.”

PERFECTING THE VISION OF HEAT Fusion Thermal’s optics make the complex seem simple. The Avenger 55XR and Avenger 40 utilize the company’s T3 Three Button Control System, along with the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) menu. “It’s super easy to use,” said Ryan Warner, a factory rep, who is also an avid hog hunter. “The owner of the company helped design it after being frustrated with having to look down to focus or operate the thermal. The Avenger has a dark, raised middle button — you don’t have to look down and you always know where your fingers are.” Warner said the lens type and quality also make the Avenger models stand out. “They are incredibly clear, thanks to the use of the higher quality Germanium lens and a larger lens size with more curvature to maximize the amount of heat it picks up.” Warner has been using thermal optics for years while hog hunting. “I’ve used every thermal out there,” he said. “I used the Fusion product before I was a sales rep. It held up to everything I threw its way.” With any thermal product, heat is an issue. The Avenger series utilizes aircraftgrade aluminum housing, while most other brands use plastic. “Once you heat up a thermal, the performance goes down,” Warner said. “The aluminum housing allows it to escape, whereas plastic holds in the heat.” Thermal sensors require lots of power, and the Avenger Series has ample power with the 18650 battery design, run in parallel, providing an industry-leading, 8-hour run time. Angel Padilla, of Johnny’s Sport Shop in Eagle Lake, works full-time at the shop and also guides hog hunters at night with Sandy Creek Outfitters. “The units perform really well in humidity and fog, which a lot of other brands struggle with,” Padilla said. “You can still see the animals in high humidity. And I like the three-button system because you never have to look up to see where your fingers are.” Hunters like to record their nighttime hog hunts, and the Avenger series includes a full media package, including photo, video and audio capabilities, along with Fusion Thermal’s HeatSync App to make connectivity a snap. “The Avenger is by far the best bang for your buck,” Warner said. “I have a unit that was almost twice the price, and the Fusion outperforms it. It’s a great value. The Avenger 55XR costs less than $6,000 and the Avenger 40 is around $4,000.

Fusion Thermal Exclusive Features Micro Click Focus Leave the Collars to the Dogs

Getting your target into focus quickly and easily is a must, and you won’t find a better system than our Micro Click Focus. Our tactile focus knob is conveniently located on top of the front lens, and unlike the dog collar design used by our competitors you won’t need to perform a circus act just to focus your scope. Plus, you’ll always get your best shot as the micro click adjustments put you on the perfect focus point every time.

ARCLIGHT Ultra HD Germanium Lens High Purity for Maximum Energy

The single most expensive component of a well-crafted thermal is its germanium lens. If you skimp here, you’re not even in the game. Our high purity ArcLight Ultra HD Germanium Lens is the crowning jewel of our technology package. It perfects the task of collecting and funneling infrared energy into the thermal sensor unhindered by distortion. This clean transition results in an infrared energy dump that unleashes the full potential of our WAVE thermal sensor delivering a user experience well beyond expectations.

KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Menu Industry’s Easiest Menu System

We think you’re really going to like our menu; it uses words, English words. Written for Americans by Americans. That’s why we called it KISS. You’ve heard the phrase, and at Fusion Thermal it’s the reason we can make the industry’s boldest statement: Our operating system is so easy to use you’ll likely never read the instructions.

T3 Control System Don’t Let Your Fingers Get Lost in the Dark

Our highly intuitive three button control system with center tower makes using your scope simple and easy. Every command is at your fingertips, and the Center Tower evenly splits the control panel, so you’ll never be confused about what button you’re going to press. We thought this a particularly good idea since you’ll be using it in the dark most of the time.

WAVE Thermal Sensor Same Money, Better Performance

Is it possible for one thermal scope to dramatically outperform everything else in its class? Yes, so don’t make the mistake of shopping by specifications alone or you just might get burned. Our WAVE thermal sensors push the limit of what is technically possible and set the standard for image quality, ruggedness, and long life. So, before you plop down your hard-earned cash make sure you do a side-by-side to any similarly priced competitive alternative. We think you’ll find the difference to be clearly obvious.

XGEN Alloy Housing Plastic is for toys. Metal is for tools.

It’s a fact, thermals produce heat, and heat is the enemy of all thermal devices. If you don’t get the heat out operational performance will degrade, and long-term internal damage is a certainty. Our XGEN (Next Generation Alloy Body) shields your expensive investment in a metal clad of armor, and our high-end AL6082 Conductive Structural Alloy displaces heat at an astounding 71,900% better than plastic. You don’t think of your thermal as some cheap plastic toy. Why should it be built like one?

Moose madness adventure By Tony Vindell

For Lone Star Outdoor News

Tony Vindell

A moose hunting trip to British Columbia, Canada, is an experience that can only be described as one of a kind. Our eight-day trip included walking along narrow trails covered with stumps, downed pine trees and burnt logs left by recent or old forest fires, riding on an eight-wheeler Argo vehicle, and driving endless miles of curvy and hilly dirt roads on a pickup truck in search of game. At other times, the hunt required paddling around Swan Lake — a large body of water surrounded by a thick forest of tall yellow and green-colored trees. Chunks of the lake’s shoreline were covered with lily moss — a favorite moose snack, along with the yellow leaves of young willow shrubs. My son, Antonio and I arrived in early October at Prince George after a long layover in Vancouver, and drove nearly three hours to the Copper River Outfitters camp. As we drove around, a moose was spotted standing between two trees of the coniferous family at the end of a long draw. It was far away, making the large animal seem kind of small as viewed from the top of the road. The bull was staring straight at us for what seemed like a couple of minutes. I got out the vehicle, laid flat on a dirt mound and started putting the crosshairs on the motionless moose. After waiting and waiting for the bull to turn, our guide, Riley Hill, made several calls. The bull finally turned broadside. A bullet from the .30-06 hit the moose, but it did not go down. It hid between two slender trees about 350 yards away. As it moved out, it was hit again, then disappeared over a hill at the end of the draw. It was soon found lying perfectly camouflaged against two big dark-colored tree trunks. It was then when the real work started and, as can happen in the wilderness, nothing went as planned. We went back to camp, loaded the Argo, and headed to pick up the animal. But once we thought everything

was ready, the vehicle couldn’t get through the downed logs and stumps. Hill’s father, Brett, showed up later with a chainsaw in hand and started cutting a pathway for the eight-wheeler to get through. Once accomplished, the bull was loaded, but as the Argo started making headway, its fuel pump broke down, apparently from the weight of the 1,200-pound moose. A few hours later and with the help of Brett’s Jeep, two ropes and a pulley, the Argo was hauled all the way to the top of the road and winched onto a trailer. One striking aspect of the trip was the landscape in huge sections of the area. Some places resembled cemeteries of dead trees caused by old wildfires, others by fires this spring and summer that burned thousands of acres of forest, making it the biggest such disaster there since 2018. In contrast, other areas looked as green and yellow as if nothing had happened. The hunt also involved going to another camp miles away, only partly accessible by an Argo because of the narrow, snake-shaped trail. Once at the rustic camp, the lights came on after a generator was started, and a 16-foot aluminum boat was used to go around Swan Lake. The 2 1/2 hp motor broke down, leaving no choice but to use paddles to either go across the waters and go around the lake — all while Canada geese and a variety of ducks flew ahead of the boat. Leaving the water and walking along a muddy section of the trail, we spotted several bear tracks, including two left the night before by a grizzly. We spotted a few black bear in open fields, along with mule deer. Grouse were everywhere, either standing by the side of the roads or picking up pebbles. As we went by, the birds stood as if nothing bothered them, while a few flew into the lower parts of trees. Yes, the moose hunting trip turned out to be one of a kind.

IN HONOR OF HEMINGWAY’S BERETTA In 1949, Ernest Hemingway, who may be America’s most renowned author and a well-known hunter, purchased a Beretta shotgun — an SO3, serial number 5991 — which was Beretta’s top-of-the-line over-and-under at the time. Hemingway bought the 12-gauge shotgun to shoot ducks in the Venice, Italy, area. The gun’s journey included a trip to Africa where Hemingway hunted guinea fowl and to Cuba where he hunted pigeon. In 1963, a few years after Hemingway’s death and after spending years in Africa, the S03 was sold at auction by Abercrombie & Fitch. Beretta acquired the shotgun years later and it is currently on display at the Beretta Gallery on New York’s Madison Avenue. Ian Harrison, Beretta’s director of premium gun sales and the former manager of the Dallas Beretta Gallery, has designed a new shotgun in homage to Hemingway and his original Beretta gun. “It’s a historic-type piece,” Harrison said. “Last year, I designed and built a shotgun in what is now Beretta’s top-of-the-line over-and-under, the SO10. In the 1940s, the 12-gauge was the all-purpose gun used for wingshooters, but now it leans more toward the 20-gauge. The new gun is in 20 gauge with a 28-inch barrel, and it has a modernized version of the original engraving, including roses, little faces, and the historic Pietro Beretta logo on the bottom. The SO10, in homage to “Papa Hemingway,” will sell for $98,000.

THE BEST SOCKS AND GLOVES FROM THE AMERICAN BISON The American plains bison survives in some tough conditions, from blazing heat to minus-60-degree cold. How do they do it? It’s all about the undercoat in the animals’ fur. “Mother Nature has given them the perfect clothing to keep them comfortable year-round in all kinds of conditions,” said The Buffalo Wool Company owner Ron Miskin. “It’s because of the "down" or fine soft undercoat they grow out in winter and shed out in spring.” Each huge bison only has 6 to 8 ounces of the undercoat. “That’s all it takes to keep the bison completely comfortable,” Miskin said. “The downy fiber has a natural crimp to it that helps it trap more dead air than any other fiber. Dead air is a fantastic insulator and provides a great buffer against the cold.” Most people have seen photos of bison completely crusted over with ice and snow, and their body heat doesn't escape through the amazing insulation. Ron Miskin and his wife, Theresa, developed socks, gloves and much more from the bison undercoat, along with the difficult task of locating enough to produce in larger quantities, a decadelong process. “Our supply chain brings together bison ranchers, small independent mills and local manufacturers, Miskin said. “We

work with ranchers all over the U.S. to get their hair. You only get a few pair of socks off of one bison.” It only takes a few wears to realize these are the best socks and gloves made. “Bison wool is soft enough to wrap a baby in, and tough enough to keep a mountain man warm in a blizzard,” Miskin said. “The fiber has a micron count of about 15, comparable to a good cashmere.” Each pair is warm, lightweight and super-tough. Iditarod mushers who used to pack up to 25 pairs for the long journey, pack just five pair of Buffalo Wool socks. “The socks wick stronger,” Miskin said. “They keep you comfortable at real cold temps, and when it’s hot, they are better than cotton socks.” The Miskin family has been raising bison for decades, and the many styles of products, by-products of many ranchers raising bison for meat and all of which come with a 100-percent guarantee, have a greater purpose. “We believe that by working together, we can preserve America's national mammal,” Miskin said.

The Conklin Award was created to honor the memory of James E. Conklin, M.D., a superb hunter and stalwart conservationist. Dr. Conklin exhibited the highest degree ofethics in his extensive hunting career. Furthermore, he demonstrated a strong commitment to wildlife conservation. In this spirit, the mission statement for The Conklin Award was written: “The Conklin Award recognizes the world’s greatest active hunter who pursues game in the most difficult terms and conditions, while abiding by the highest standards of ethics and fair chase, and is a strong CONKLIN AWARD participant in wildlife conservation. SCULPTURE Sculpture by Rick Taylor

The Conklin Foundation Board is pleased to announce the 2024 winner of the Conklin award. Eduardo Negrete, is the 22nd winner of the “Tough Man” award, named after the late Dr. James Conklin, a Weatherby award winner, who liked to pursue difficult animal throughout the world. Eduardo, began his big game hunting in 2001 at the age of 33. Since then he has been on over 170 hunts throughout the world taking over 580 animals including 237 Conklin animals. This includes taking 65 sheep and 58 goats. Eduardo has been married for 28 years to Julia and has a son and a daughter. He lives in Mexico City and has a commercial real estate company. GETTING THE YOUTH OUTDOORS

The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth may have the most successful fundraiser and conservation group you’ve never heard of. The organization, which is dedicated to outdoor and wildlife charitable and educational activities, with an emphasis on serving area youth and youth organizations, was established in 1957. It doesn’t sell memberships, and it raises nearly all of its funds from the annual Wild Game Dinner, to be held Feb. 29 at Dickies Arena, where last year 1,100 people gathered to support the group — a far cry from the banquets years and decades ago at one of the area’s country clubs. The Club’s fundraising totals are mindblowing. “Now, we’ve set the bar pretty high.” said President Kyle Whitesell. "The banquet has become a real throw-down.” It sells out quickly, but Whitesell said there may be room to add up to 100 seats in the arena. Beyond conservation of wildlife, the Club’s mission also includes encouraging good sportsmanship, safety in hunting, fishing and related activities, and developing in youth an appreciation for enjoyment of wildlife and the outdoors. The list of organizations The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth supports includes:

We’ll be there again this year.” DSC attendees are encouraged to stop by the club’s booth to learn more.

NEW KUIU LINES FOR DEER, DUCK HUNTERS Two recent introductions from ultralight hunting gear company KUIU fit perfectly for the Texas hunter. “We introduced the Whitetail line in 2022 and the Waterfowl line in 2023,” said Vice President of Brand Marketing Kevin Wilkerson. “Now, current and new KUIU customers can feel confident knowing they are wearing the most innovative products on more of their hunts.” The brand was initially developed for sheep hunters who needed lightweight protection in extreme conditions. “Our customers let us know through our website and our stores that they were wanting the best products in other categories,” Wilkerson said. The Encounter System, designed for white-tailed deer hunters, is built for stationary hunting situations. Equipped with an ultra-quiet, low-sheen outer layer with a fleece interior for increased warmth, the jackets and pants provide warmth while maintaining optimal stretch, breathability and temperature regulation. The Waterfowl line covers the duck and goose hunter from head to toe. The line includes base and mid-layers, insulated vests, waterproof jackets, waders, rain gear and backpacks. The layering system is durable with optimal stretch and moisture regulation. The rain jacket is durable, abrasion and puncture resistant. KUIU partnered with Simms on the waders, built entirely with the duck hunter in mind. “We set the bar higher in performance and design,” Wilkerson said. “Customers told us they wanted it, and they have it.” In August 2023, KUIU opened its new Dallas store on Dallas Parkway, the company’s only brick-and-mortar store other than at its Dixon, California headquarters. “We’re excited to bring KUIU to Dallas,” Wilkerson said. “It really joins in nicely with the recent introductions. We’re looking to open multiple stores over the coming years and bring KUIU to new areas across the country.”

Ruger Celebrates 75th Anniversary

8,472± Acres Uvalde-Zavala Co. Nueces River Ranch

5,820± Acres Maverick Co. Dos Arroyos Ranch

In celebration of its 75th Anniversary, Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. is proud to announce the immediate availability of commemorative firearms from each of Ruger's firearm manufacturing facilities: a Mark IV Standard model, a pair of 10/22 Sporter models, and an LCP MAX. While each of these models is tastefully embellished with 75th Anniversary markings, pricing for each remains competitive and in keeping with Ruger's tradition of providing high-value firearms at modest prices. "Ruger has come a long way in 75 years," said Chief Executive Officer Chris Killoy. "From humble beginnings in the Red Barn in Connecticut to three powerhouse manufacturing operations in Arizona, New Hampshire, and North Carolina — and with more support facilities throughout the United States — Ruger has made its name by providing top-quality firearms that represent a great value to the shooting public. On behalf of our almost 2,000 dedicated associates, I thank our customers for making our first 75 years such a success!" From the Prescott, Arizona manufacturing facility, Ruger's 75th Anniversary is commemorated with a standard model of the iconic Mark Series pistol. Featuring a fully adjustable rear sight, an undercut patridge front sight, and a heavy tapered barrel, this attractive pistol balances well in the hand and retains the classic styling of the iconic Standard Pistol that launched the company in 1949. Additional details include a 75th Anniversary logo engraving on both the receiver and the bolt, and handsome, fully checkered grip panels. The Newport, New Hampshire manufacturing facility offers two 75th Anniversary models of the timeless 10/22 rimfire carbine. Each model features a stainless steel barrel, silver-finished receiver, polished bolt engraved with the 75th Anniversary logo, a match-sanded butt pad, and front and rear sling swivels. Model 31275 has a traditionally stained and checkered hardwood stock, while model 41275 has an unstained hardwood stock adorned with striking, dark checkering. Mayodan, North Carolina, the location of Ruger's newest manufacturing facility, offers a unique LCP MAX to celebrate the company's 75th Anniversary. While still amazingly compact, the LCP MAX is a double-stack, ten-round version of the enormously successful LCP. The anniversary model of the LCP MAX features a stainless steel slide adorned with an engraved 75th Anniversary logo and a silver-anodized aluminum trigger. Like all LCP MAX models, the 75th Anniversary LCP MAX features a highly visible tritium front sight, square-ledge, dove-tailed rear sight, and a reversible magazine release.

FIND, SELL YOUR RANCH WITH WHITETAIL PROPERTIES

WHITETAIL PROPERTIES/JACKIE WEBB

☎ (940) 549-2677 ✉ JACKIE.WEBB@WHITETAILPROPERTIES.COM

When it comes to buying or selling a ranch, nothing beats the team of a great, local broker combined with nationwide backing. In northern Texas, that local broker is Jackie Webb, with a seven-county territory spanning from Young to Stephens counties. “I started with Whitetail Properties almost 10 years ago,” Webb said. “I grew up in Graham and spent my life hunting and working in all of this area. I’ve been very blessed to build an extensive network of life-long friends and clients that call this special part of Texas home.” Potential buyers often aren’t aware of how to accomplish what they want on a new piece of property, and a local broker and hunter can be a lifesaver. “Many of my clients haven’t experienced purchasing land before,” Webb said. “We can walk them through the process and give local referrals for construction, water, electric, hunting stands/feeders and everything else they need.” Webb said there is a benefit to a local broker working with a national company, with brokers in 38 states. “Whitetail Properties is made of Land Specialists,” he said. “I’m a local 5th-generation Texan working

for a nationwide company. It’s a fabulous company founded by hunters and farmers that stands by its land specialists. We serve our clients and make sure the right thing is done at all times.” Webb has two new listings he is excited about. “One is a high-fenced operation south of Graham,” he said. “The other is a sportsman’s paradise in Shackelford County; it’s very diverse and offers tremendous income potential.” The overall market for rural property is still strong, Webb said. “Texas is always a seller’s market,” he said. “Economic factors will constantly change but the fact remains that demand for Texas land will always be there. With interest rate increases, there is a flight to quality for discerning buyers, but the demand for good quality land assets never waivers.” At the DSC Convention, Webb said the Whitetail Properties footprint is well established. “Our booth stays full all day long,” he said. “DSC is such a great event for us because we get client interaction on a level that is very hard to find at any other venue.”

HYBRID-ELECTRIC, THE NEW STANDARD In 2015, Ultimate Top Drives embarked on a mission to create a new class of hunting, safari and off-road vehicles founded on hybrid-electric drivetrains and clean sheet designs that emphasize performance, efficiency and safety. All of our vehicles are designed with a passion for hunting and the outdoors. From humble beginnings in the garage, to our new state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facility in San Antonio, UTD stands out among the rest. Combining eco-friendly designs with rugged reliability, no other top-drive vehicle can come close to the capability and quality found in Texas-made Ultimate Top Drives. The current operating model in the utility-terrain vehicle industry involves the use of loud, gaspowered modified vehicles that disturb nature and were not created to meet the needs of the modern outdoorsman. At Ultimate Top Drives, we custom engineer all of our vehicles to perform at the highest level in any off-road hunting context, and we're always looking to move the industry forward through new and innovative features like the patented articulating cab found on our flagship offering, The Cabra. And now we’re making room for even more people to enjoy the benefits of our vehicles with our latest UTV, The Cabrón, which boasts seating for up to 12 passengers. UTD takes pride in helping sportsmen enjoy the outdoors, while staying committed to protecting the environment we all love to explore. Our hybrid-electric drivetrains play a key role in reducing greenhouse emissions and harmful chemicals expelled by other field-sport vehicles. Their electric nature also helps our vehicles maintain the element of stealth in any off-road environment, allowing you and your passengers to get even closer to wildlife. Regardless of your passion, Ultimate Top Drives sets a new standard for all-terrain vehicles and redefines the hunting experience.

WORK HARD AND PLAY HARDER WITH KENZIE’S OPTICS Kenzie’s Optics is proud to say we have been an exhibitor with DSC since 2015. We are firmly devoted to firearm safety, protecting the freedom to hunt, sustaining wildlife conservation, and encouraging all forms of education — from face-to-face with customers, to the classroom, and into the great outdoors. Kenzie’s Optics, a veteran-owned, sporting goods retailer established in 2002 by Keith and Katie Smith, began after Keith’s time in the military which gave him the desire to build a one-stop shop of hard-to-find thermal and night vision equipment, while also stocking the top of the line riflescopes, red dot sights, apparel and everything in between. Throughout the year you can find us at trade shows across the U.S., with knowledgeable sales representatives who are happy to help you get exactly what you need for your next outdoor adventure. The Kenzie’s Optics storefront is located just north of Atlanta in Cartersville, Georgia. We have built over 85 remarkable relationships with every vendor we represent, and we personally believe in everything we sell. We are dedicated to our customers from the first question to purchase and find joy in outfitting them for their next range day, hunting trip or outdoor adventure. What we strive for is 100% customer satisfaction and maintaining a relationship to return to us time and time again — whether that is for a red dot sight, riflescope, apparel, thermal imaging or more. A full line of our products can be found at kenziesoptics.com. We look forward to seeing you at DSC!

We’ve all pondered what Heaven might look like. But Al Johnson is pretty sure he knows. It’s a place without concrete and traffic and commotion. A place that helps you find balance and peace.

So now, when Al wants to meet, we’re inclined to talk at his place rather than the office. Because, as Al told us, being out on the land is good for the soul.

When Al told us he’d found just such a place for sale, all of us here at Heritage Land Bank moved quickly to find him the perfect loan. A loan that worked within his budget, so the Johnson family could make this little bit of heaven their own.

JAMY TRAUT HUNTING SAFARIS, NAMIBIA’S PREMIER SAFARI COMPANY Most hunters spend a lifetime waiting to see their first African sunrise. A fortunate few have experienced it countless times, yet never gain their fill. No matter how grand your expectations or which species tops the list, Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is ready to host the safari of your dreams. There is no finer safari destination than Namibia. The size of Texas and Oklahoma combined with a population density similar to Montana, Namibia is a land of stunning landscapes, unspoiled hunting concessions and a staggering selection of freeranging plains game and big game species. Game numbers as well as trophy quality are outstanding and a proper infrastructure ensures that hunting Namibia is convenient and safe. A professional hunter with nearly 35 years of experience, Jamy Traut was born in Namibia and raised on a remote game-rich property near the Caprivi Strip. He grew up with a rifle over his shoulder and could never imagine becoming anything other than a professional hunter. Today, his namesake company remains a family-run operation with exclusive hunting rights on some of the most desirable private properties, national parks and conservancies in all of Africa. Bordering the West side of Etosha National Park, Kaokoland is Africa’s largest contiguous hunting concession. Essentially a wilderness area with but few residents, Kaokoland is a place where lions, elephant, eland and other major plains game species dominate the landscape. Waterberg Plateau National Park is quite possibly the finest trophy Cape buffalo concession in all of Africa. Moreover, it

offers superb leopard and eland hunting in a pristine natural environment. Jamy’s sprawling concession in the Kalahari Desert is the place for huge black-maned lions (currently importable to America), world-class gemsbok and outstanding trophy eland. Two concessions in the famed Caprivi Strip offer the opportunity for elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, croc, lechwe and several other plains game species, as well as sport fishing. Quite often, safaris begin or conclude with a few days at Panorama, Jamy’s private plains game haven that encompasses 55,000 acres with exclusive rights to another 250,000 adjoining acres. Jamy’s partner, Louw Lotter, and their families live on Panorama and have created a spectacular permanent lodge with chalets, luxury safari tents, swimming pool and a selection of activities and tours for nonhunters as well. A Panoramabased safari is a favorite of family groups and the possibilities for side trips throughout Namibia can easily be arranged. All hunting areas feature permanent chalets or luxury tents with en suite baths, superb dining and an unexpected level of comfort. Each camp is supported by a full-time staff and professional hunters manage each location as well as leading the hunts. Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is uniquely positioned to make your African safari dreams come true. Please drop by booth 450 at any time during the show and see for yourself!

THE FEEDER CONUNDRUM It’s time to seriously evaluate feeder performance, an overlooked issue in the industry. Many products have failed to meet any effective or efficient expectations. If you are not personally involved in this dynamic of your operation, your management will confirm! For all the investment made in your property, consider these significant effects every day. Wasted feed and time add up to “Big Bucks” in the wrong places. Serious questions in the dilemma are obviously answered by the Trophy Feeder, a UV Stabilized Poly product. The tough questions: • What are the effects of heat and rust on feed integrity? Is feed palatable? Are animals actually able to access the feed or is it clogged and stopped up? What feed percentage goes to nontarget species, i.e. raccoons? • Does the design offer antler and horn protection? • How many animals/species feed simultaneously? What about domination? Is there a visible feed line? • Would remote refill determination be beneficial? • What about feature customization of heights for smaller animals? What’s involved in the setup and relocation process? What is the longevity and value of your investment? The TROPHY FEEDER, with Maximum Antler Protection and Highest Nontarget Resistance, is the only unique answer to all these questions. It will efficiently and effectively feed generations of animals. Developed in West Texas more than 30 years ago, the originals are still in operation. It has been imitated many times but never duplicated. When you make the investment, be sure to update your will! It truly is the "BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK"

BUYING OR SELLING A RANCH? THINK RANCH INVESTMENTS Since 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million acres totaling nearly $1 billion in value have established our prominent place in the market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. During the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations, allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas. The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder operations as well as real estate development. In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied and unique including International hunting consultant, game ranch development, commercial hunting operations, rural land development, commercial real estate and mineral

production. Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition of working farms and ranches. And since 2008, a new set of benefits has become available to our customers. With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges) and real estate brokers we have the team of professionals to assist you in the sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years, resulting in a low cost basis, and the tax implications can be significant. We work to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income producing properties. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the firsttime landowner, whether someone seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property. After the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in taking an undeveloped piece of property and build lakes, roads, game fences, barns, houses, lodges and runways. Utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game and migratory

and upland game birds. For 42 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations, corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments will always be by your side.

A PROPERTY OF A LIFETIME west of DFW Imagine more than 3,000 acres and nearly 1.5 miles of river frontage, with prime deer habitat, sub-surface wells and half mineral rights —all within an hour of the DFW Metroplex. The dream can become a reality with a new property listed by Coalson Real Estate. The 3,116-acre property on the Brazos River is located 20 minutes southwest of Weatherford in Parker and Hood counties. “It’s less that 40 minutes west of Fort Worth,” said broker McAllen Coalson. “That’s unheard of. And it’s beautiful with rolling hills and lots of live oaks.” The listing has 7,488 feet (1.4 miles) of Brazos River frontage, along with 12,190 feet (2.3 miles) of the spring-fed Cottonwood Creek meandering through the west side. Red Bank Creek drains into the Brazos River. For duck hunters, there’s more, as the property includes 25-plus earthen ponds and two natural springs. And there’s plenty of potable water, as there are nine subsurface water wells and a Parker County Water Supply Co-op tap. “The property has a lot of great animals, a remodeled 3-bedroom, 2-bath brick home with a game room, and it’s far enough downriver so there isn’t river traffic,” Coalson said. “There is great habitat for deer, turkey, dove and ducks. It’s got it all — it’s extremely rare to find a property like this so close to the city.” Dave Carter, a Certified Wildlife Biologist, evaluated the property and its wildlife, noting deer, dove, hogs, turkey and numerous songbirds throughout the ranch, along with migratory waterfowl. “There is more than enough high-quality wildlife habitat to support a much larger population than currently residing on the property, Carter said. “No browse lines or overutilized areas were observed, and the deers’ body condition were well above average. The ranch, previously called Red Bank Ranch, is an exquisite property that, with continued habitat and wildlife management, shows endless opportunities.” Coalson, who has been in real estate for more than 32 years, works with his father, Mac, who has been in the business for 56 years. “Farms and ranches are all I sell,” he said. The ranch is reasonably priced at $13,975 per acre. “We had it appraised, and the price is under the appraisal amount,” Coalson said. “It’s a true find.

A matter of trust

By Conrad Evarts I completed my degree in journalism at the University of Montana at the end of two eras: 1. The switch from analog to digital. 2. The switch from journalist to celebrity influencer. The first had the potential to make journalism better. The second undid the gains of the first. When I walked away from news, I thought my degree was a waste. But a few years later, I met the most credible journalist I could have hoped to work with. The best part? We worked together on “Petersen’s’ HUNTING TV.” This meant our beat was hunting. Guinness World Records lists the longest journalism career holder as Don Alhart — 57 years. Craig Boddington clocked 50 years recently. Fifty years of meticulously walking a long and narrow tightrope, with many folks hoping for a fall. Celebrity influencers are disappearing because humans possess the ability to reason. Although reason is widely atrophied, it can be awakened when a person gets burned repeatedly by influencers. I’ve worked closely with Boddington for 20 years. We create intelligent episodes built on journalistic and fair chase ethics. The only area we deviate is adding music, historically that’s not allowed in TV journalism. Journalists were once thought to be objective. The trouble is, complete non-bias is impossible. We return with hours of video that needs to be edited to 22 minutes. Every edit, regardless of the medium, is an expression of one’s values. Craig and I share values regarding outdoor journalism. We tell the stories of conservation and ethical hunting. In today’s media, a person makes a choice — be true or be rich. We choose true daily. I see Boddington regularly decline revenue to stay true. Want to test this? Approach him during the convention and refer to him as a celebrity. Then watch his body language. Craig does endorse outfitters. As the marketplace moved online, it was clear this was essential for the good of hunting. Anyone that’s worked with as many outfitters as Craig has knows the good, the bad and the ugly of outfitting. He declines many requests for endorsement. He withdraws his endorsement if he confirms bad behavior. Most importantly, every outfit he endorses is thoroughly vetted. The vetting involves researching the outfit. If they survive that phase, one of us visits the outfit. We spend days ensuring their word is true. Craig Boddington Endorsed Outfitters is unlike anything in the hunting world. We don’t want hundreds of unvetted outfitters. Google already does that. The serious hunter wants a short list of outfitters that delivers, won’t get them killed, tarnish their reputation or squander their time and money. We want the 100 best worldwide. If you know an outfitter that deserves to be in CBEO, please share it with us.

AFRICA’S DANGEROUS SEVEN IN 40 DAYS WITH CHAPUNGU-KAMBAKO In these times it is seldom to hear of safaris longer than 14 days. After months of planning, Steve and Diane arrived in Johannesburg — ready and eager to start their African safari in search of the Dangerous Seven. Our first stop was Kalahari Oryx in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Steve managed to hunt a beautiful 51-inch buffalo, monster white rhino as well as a USFWS exportable wildmanaged lion, ticking off the first three of the Big Five. Diane shifted her focus to the endemic plains game of the Kalahari Desert and harvested a kudu, nyala, oryx, sable and zebra. After 10 days at Kalahari Oryx, the team, under the guidance of PH Nicolai Raubenheimer, travelled to the Nyati Wilderness in the Limpopo Province. The aim was to hunt hippo and crocodile, both very cunning species in the water. On day 3, Steve got on the sticks and shot his hippo bull at sunset. He also got another 53-inch buffalo, giraffe, impala and warthog, while Diane harvested an ancient klipspringer. We stalked a few crocodiles during the week but only found the right one nearing the end of the last day. Leaving South Africa behind, our next stop would be Tsholotsho South near the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. It is right before the summer rainfall season and the bush is at its driest. Elephants walk for miles to find water and every day we have been sitting at pockets of permanent pools to scout over hundreds of

elephants quenching their thirst. Steve harvested his bull on the fourth day, the heaviest tusk weighing in at 77 pounds, as well as a spotted hyena, while Diane shot her 79-pounder on the eighth day. It was time to take a breather from hunting for a few days, so we did some sightseeing at the world-renowned Victoria Falls and caught tigerfish on the Zambezi. Kambako camp in the Niassa Reserve, Mozambique, was our final destination. Leopard was still on the list to hunt as well as a few endemic species of the area. We had several leopard on bait which we monitored over the course of 14 days. With the help of local PH Darren, Steve manged to get his big tom on the eighth day. He also harvested a beautiful waterbuck and yellow baboon while Diane hunted a bushbuck, kudu, red duiker, common duiker and Sharpe’s grysbuck, ticking three more species off her Tiny Ten list. It has been 40 days, across three countries, hunting Africa’s Dangerous Seven while making endless memories. Steve and Diane were set on this being their last hunt in Africa, but now they are already planning their next trip with Chapungu-Kambako Safaris. There is truth in the words of Karen Blixen, Danish author of “Out of Africa”. “If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on safari once again…”

MULTI-PURPOSE THERMAL OPTICS Perhaps the greatest innovation in hog, predator and varmint hunting is the advent and evolution of thermal weapon sights and thermal monoculars. The ability to detect, view, and even shoot animals based on heat (without any visible light) is essentially a sixth sense for hunters. Thermal optics have historically been expensive. We’re seeing the technology continue to improve and prices starting to ease down, but we are also noticing an increase in the versatility of newer units. For example, the InfiRay Outdoor RICO MICRO (RH25) is a powerful, compact 640 thermal optic that can be used in a helmet-mounted configuration, used as a handheld scanner, used as a clip-on thermal in front of a low-power optic or even be used as a dedicated sight with multiple weapon or ammo profiles. Another notable introduction is the HYBRID 50mm, also from InfiRay Outdoor. Not only is this a really crisp 50mm 640 thermal weapon sight with optional laser rangefinding and ballistic calculation capability, the HYBRID can also be used as a rail-mounted thermal clip-on in front of a day scope up to 10x. This means the HYBRID could serve as a dedicated sight on your coyote rifle, but also move in front of a scope or dot sight on a larger caliber rifle to knock down big hogs tearing up the winter wheat. If you purchase a thermal optic this year, seriously consider one of these powerful units that can serve double duty and considerably increase your capabilities in the dark.

UNIQUE Technology IN ENGLISH SHOTGUNS AND PISTOLS It has been another remarkable year for English gun manufacturers, 'Longthorne,' who are proudly showcasing their offerings at Booth 4361 during this year's convention. Exciting news has surfaced as the company has secured approval to import their highly anticipated LHP pistol into the USA, and they are ready to take orders at the convention. The LHP pistol, which will be available in a medley of new design styles and adds yet another dimension to the product line, complementing their range of trigger plate and sidelock shotguns. Notably, these shotguns feature unique patented barrels crafted from a single block of highspecification steel or titanium. This innovative technology strikes a balance between strength and lightness, ensuring low felt recoil due to the rigidity of the barrels. Since January 2023 Longthorne has welcomed two further esteemed partners into its fold: Griffin & Howe in New Jersey and The Orvis Company. Both companies proudly stock Longthorne guns and offer demonstration models. Should they not have your desired model in stock, they are more than willing to place orders on your behalf. These companies join Pacific Sporting Arms (East and West) with whom Longthorne has an established relationship. In an effort to foster stronger relationships with U.S. dealers, Longthorne has enlisted the assistance of a U.S. Sales Manager, Jimmy Kern, who will be at the booth at DSC. Kern has a set of demonstration guns and is eager to share the unique attributes of Longthorne shotguns with interested parties, and if you would like to arrange a demonstration for your customers, he is the man to help. In the course of this year, Longthorne expanded its team to include Ian Andrews in the realm of business development. Ian brings with him a wealth of experience garnered from working with some of the most esteemed companies in the world, such as Christies, Bonhams, and William & Son, within the firearms industry. Longthorne also now officially sponsors top U.S. shooter, Todd Hitch, who is now shooting with a Longthorne shotgun and will also be at DSC, schedule permitting. Also in 2023, Longthorne discovered that iconic British rap duo 'Pete & Bas' had incorporated 'the Longthorne shotgun' into their latest rap, a performance that can be enjoyed on YouTube or viewed on Longthorne’s website. BERGARA, BANISH DEADLY COMBO By David J. Sams Lone Star Outdoor News

A light west wind was at my back as the rattling horns worked their magic. In seconds, there was movement to my left as a buck jumped out of his bed and into my view. The binoculars confirmed it was the big 8-pointer I had been hunting for three years. I wheeled around 90 degrees and shoved the safety off. When I found the sight picture, I only saw a white tail bouncing off. Everything worked perfect — it just wasn’t his day to die. Bergara sent one of their Ridge Carbon Wilderness rifles in .308 to test, as I was needing a management gun to thin out some deer on a ranch. I added a Silencer Central Banish to the end of the barrel. I shot the first box of ammo as fast as I could and then started to work on the targets. The gun shot a three-round group that was a half-inch and I was equally blown away with the suppressor and how much recoil the Banish reduced. This was all with subsonic Winchester 185-grain ammo. Then, I shot one round into a buck at 120 yards. It knocked him down, but he kicked himself out of sight. No more super quiet ammo for me. I gathered up some different ammo and hit the range again, as every gun shoots ammo differently. The Nosler 150-grain ballistic tip hunting ammunition shot the best and we saw 2,780 fps from the barrel at 100 yards. The 125-grain ballistic tip also did well with 2,903 fps and very little felt recoil. The 165-grain trophy-grade ammo were shooting about 3-inch groups. We tried Hornaday 168-grain ELD Match and the gun didn’t really like those, but it did shoot the 150-grain Superformance really well. Bergara sells this gun as a wilderness backpack gun, but it came in a bit heavy with the scope rings, sling and Banish suppressor at 8.84 pounds. I think that is a perfect weight for Texas truck and blind hunting. It feels great in your hand, the action is super-smooth and the oversized bolt is great. I even carried the gun for about 9 miles during some December rattling sessions and the Versacarry gun sling was comfortable throughout. A silencer is a game changer. For any new shooter, recoil is always an issue, and the sound is too. Even with my years of experience, I love the quiet and low recoil. Testing shows the Banish 30 reduces the report of a .308 by a whopping 34 decibels at a minimum. The swish sound of the bullet traveling downrange allows the report to be the loudest thing you hear. The titanium Banish 30 with eight baffles weighs 11.2 or 14.3 ounces and is 7 or 9 inches long. The shorter version is a tiny bit louder, they say, although I opted for the longer one. It is easy to shorten by simply removing the last 2 inches. It is worth the wait and the process was super-easy with awesome Midwest customer service. Back to the management deer, the last one was shot through both shoulders with four other bucks feeding nearby. He fell in his tracks with the Nosler 150s and, before I could get out of the blind, the other bucks were back out and heading back to the corn. A GREAT FIRST 75 YEARS Ever since Holmes Thurmond built the first Skeeter boat in 1948, the boat builders have led the industry in innovation. That first boat was made of molded marine plywood with a flat bottom. In the 1950s, Skeeter was the first to use fiberglass in boat construction. The Longview, Texas-based company with its manufacturing plant in nearby Kilgore, introduced the popular ZX Series of bass boats in the 1990s and changed tournament bass fishing forever. Then came Deep V boat for the northern walleye fishermen, and later the high-performance, center-console Bay Pro Series for saltwater anglers. All the while, Skeeter innovated and expanded its boat models in all categories to accommodate recreational and tournament anglers. From the FXR series bass boat, the smoothest in the industry, to the all-new fishing and family focused SX2550 bay boat also popular with guides, the largest bay boat it makes. All of the boats are fast and nimble. The Deep V hulls are built for maximum control in the harshest conditions. The bass boats dominate the industry. The Bay boats run shallow with full control. Equipped with Yamaha outboards, Skeeter Boats are engineered like no other.

ENHANCING YOUR RANCH WITH THE LAKE OF YOUR DREAMS One of the “must have” features of today’s ranch or farm properties is a private lake or pond. “There’s nothing quite like a lake to turn your rural retreat into something truly special,” said John Jones, president of Shoreline Consulting. “Considering the swimming, boating and fishing possibilities, a private body of water will become the recreational hotspot that your family and friends will love for decades.” Jones’ company provides comprehensive private lake and pond design, construction and renovation services across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. “There are the benefits of increased property value, improved aesthetics and sightlines. But a lake or pond also introduces a new range of recreational possibilities,” Jones said. “Whether your dream is a trophy fishery, a beautiful pond for enhancing the view or a boating and swimming paradise, we will turn your dream into reality.” With Shoreline’s lake design and construction experts, the work begins long before the first shovelful of dirt is moved. The team starts by carefully assessing your goals for the lake and analyzing the property and its unique characteristics. Shoreline’s experts measure rainfall and

the area’s watershed to determine ideal lake depth and proper slope, to plan the size and shape of the body of water. They evaluate building of dams, placing drains and liners, adding supplemental aeration and structural features, all considering whether you want swimming or water sports, or a trophy fishery, or some combination. Once the planning is final, Shoreline brings the most up-to-date excavation and earth-moving equipment and a team of certified professionals to build the lake. Because Shoreline offers a turnkey lake creation service, this relieves landowners of having to find and manage excavation contractors. “We do what your local earth movers do, just better because there is a specific purpose and design in place,” Jones said. “You end up with a better finished product for the same cost.” The Shoreline team also can renovate an existing lake that is not living up to its potential, addressing issues like leaks or water level problems, erosion, dam structural issues and other problems. Shoreline helps landowners not only with lake design and construction, it will work with architects and engineers designing your house, buildings and other ranch structures in order to maximize

sightlines and landscape aesthetics. “The ongoing drought conditions have created problems many landowners may not be aware of,” Jones said. “That’s when having our team on board can become critical in anticipating and responding to issues before they get out of hand and lead to unexpected costs down the road.” Shoreline’s affiliated company, Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, offers complete lake management services that can ensure the new body of water is the best it can be. The experts at Lochow

Ranch will help you maintain a crystal blue lake or a healthy fish population that meets your goals. “We’re proud of the many lakes we have built across the region,” Jones said. “And we are equally proud that we have won the trust of landowners who want to make the most of their treasured rural properties.” SHORELINE CONSULTING ☎ (979) 703-7988 SHORELINECONSULTINGINC.COM BOOTH 3123 Official Show Program

THE REMNANT OF THE HUNT — LOSING THE NEXT GENERATION The television commercial seemed pretty simple and kinda funny. A couple of boys in one parent’s car, their female dates with them. The scene is set on the side of a dark road, flat tire, trunk open, one boy with the jack handle in his hand. The other on the phone with his mom, “Hey mom, what do I do?” Neither boy knew what to do and he was calling mom for help. First of all, it’s not funny when it is real. If it was my daughter, that would be the last date with that young man. Or at least before I spent some good, quality man time with him. Today the next generation of young men are not being trained to do these simple tasks. The men who were once there to teach them are absent. Half of our boys today are growing up in a home without a father. Some communities that can be up to 90 percent. The training ground has no trainer. The health implications for inside kids are off the chart. Kids spend an average of 40 minutes a week outside, 70 hours a week in front of a screen. Those numbers were pre-Covid. If you have kids or grandkids, most likely you have seen this in a big way. The facts are easy to find. Kids who don’t play or adventure outside are less creative, more apt to be diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, angry, obese and the list goes on. The industry of the outdoors is struggling to recruit the next generation. During Covid there was a spike in hunting licenses sales only to drop again, below pre-Covid numbers. Several years ago I sat in the newly formed R-3 (recruitment, retention and reactivation) summit meetings. This seems to be the industry's effort to brainstorm and implement ways to get the next generation to embrace the lifestyle of hunting, fishing, and shooting sports. At that first summit, several years ago, they commented that it would be 10 years before we lost our rights to access and enjoy the outdoors as we do today. Their efforts have been slightly effective but we continue to fall dangerously behind. The clock is ticking. The truth of the matter is we are going to need an army of mentors. Mentors can’t be hired or assigned. A mentor operates from the heart. They want to pour into their student. They want a purpose, a mission that makes a difference. They need the ability to reach into the underserved communities. A mentor needs accountability and structure to be effective in their teaching. They need to be committed to regular meetings with those they are training. The old model of one-and-done, weekend hunt, week outdoor camp, community fish tank has long since failed. Training is a repetitive action. So where do you find that army of volunteers? One place is the local church. The program of KOZ, Kids Outdoor Zone, does all the above. The men of a church are trained how to mentor the fatherless and father/ sons in their community and church. They teach hunting, fishing, and outdoor adventure skills every month. They also include life lessons and moral values. Something most outdoors men and women learned in the field growing up. They were taught the way of this ancient trail by their fathers, and grandfathers, uncles, and close neighbors. They sat under their instruction at hunt camps and campfires, aluminum boats and farm ponds as they grew up. If we are looking for our kids, grandkids, and great grandkids to enjoy the beauty and wonder of the field. If we want them to know how to safely handle firearms, hunt and fish. If we are going to pass down the remnant that was so transforming in our lives, we must support those fighting for it. We can’t wait and hope they don’t get so far ahead we can’t turn them back. We must support the effective work being done. The remnant of our heart for the outdoors is up to us, the clock is ticking. TJ Greaney is a 30-year veteran outdoor communicator. He has two seminars at the DSC Convention in 2024. Visit the KOZ, Kids Outdoor Zone booth at DSC 2024 or find out more online at www.KidsOutdoorZone. com. He is available for speaking to your group, event or podcasts contact Angler@KidsOutdoorZone.com. He is also available for a cup of coffee at the ranch, any ranch.
