We thank you for your dedication to the true meaning of conservation, for by simply participating in an African safari, you have become one of the number of conservationists seldom recognized by the uneducated.
We welcome you to the ancient order of African hunters, people who understand what it takes to become an integral part of the circle of life, people who understand that moment, where, after years of planning, thousands of miles traveled, days of hunting which often entails hours and hours of stalking — the focus of your intention is finally in front of you. As your crosshairs steady, as you take a deep breath and squeeze the trigger, you become a significant part of that circle of life.
At Life-Form Taxidermy, we understand this and deeply appreciate what an honor it is to have the responsibility of creating something unique for you, something worthy of your memories and the effort that it took to capture them.
Since 1981, Life-Form has grown to be a world leader in the taxidermy field, servicing the museum industry and private collectors from all over the globe with a service and quality that is unmatched. We invite you to experience the “Life-Form way” and allow us to create some masterpieces of your own.
We, Life-Form Taxidermy, treat you and your memories with the excellence you deserve. Your safari may only last for a short while, but good taxidermy will last a lifetime.
Fabarm’s Infinite RS is the side-by-side target shotgun you always wanted — and it will be available this summer!
There are a number of side-by-side competition events around the country every year, but a lack of many modern double guns to use. Digging through classic guns to find one that might work is an exercise in frustration, so we decided to just make it.
Competitive and exhibition shooter Travis Mears said most shoots include a sideby-side event, but he struggled with finding a side-by-side he felt he could compete with.
“Fabarm’s modern way of making things better results in the tightest of tolerances,” he said. “The barrels are harder, stronger, and will hold up for the target shooter. It points like an over-and-under.”
Mears shot the Infinite RS at Defender Outdoors Clay Sports Ranch in Fort Worth.
“It shoots like a dream and is soft on the shoulder,” he said.
The Infinite RS is a modern four-lug design for the ultimate in durability. The production is done on new precision CNC machines to ensure reliability and immaculate fit and finish. The design provides all of the competition features of our top-of-the-line competition guns. The barrels feature TRIBORE HP tapered bores, EXIS HP hyperbolic chokes and a tapered aluminum rib to reduce weight for perfect balance. The competition stock features an adjustable comb and a pistol grip with palm swell and the tuned trigger is adjustable.
We know that is a lot to digest, but the competition features are almost, well, infinite.
The Infinite RS, in 30- or 32-inch barrels, has an MSRP of $5,495.

When DSC announced its annual convention wouldn’t be held in Dallas during the rebuilding years at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, thoughts turned to the Texans who wouldn’t be able to make the trip to Atlanta for the show.
The solution? A summer expo, held in conjunction with the DSC Foundation’s annual gala.
A summertime international hunting show is rare, but Texas hunting seasons aren’t in the way — a great way to plan those future trips and gear up for the season that’s coming soon. Don’t miss it!
The show
While the size might be slightly scaled down from the usual January convention, it’s definitely not small.
With 270 exhibitors filling 450 booths, the hall at the Gaylord Texan will have a similar feel, with some new faces and plenty of familiar ones.
The exhibit hall will be open 1-7 p.m. Thursday, July 17; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
On Friday, both exhibitors and attendees will enjoy a special treat, the Summer Fun Happy Hour, with beer and snacks to enjoy while you mingle and maybe decide to book that trip.
The events
Thursday, July 17
On Thursday night, Smoke & Spurs, DSC’s Summer Kickoff & Auction, will be held at the Gaylord’s Grapevine Ballroom, a lively banquet and thrilling auction celebrating conservation, community, and the spirit of DSC. This isn’t just a party, it’s a full-blown evening of gourmet Texas barbecue, live music, dancing, raffles, and an exciting live auction featuring exclusive gear, hunts, experiences, and more, including entertainment from the Big City Outlaws band.
Friday, July 18
Friday’s event is a don’t-miss brunch and auction for the ladies, with Wild in Bloom, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Gaylord’s stunning Glass Cactus. The event includes mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, appetizers, speaker Kelli Poole, a wildlife professional and hunting account manager at Global Rescue, a seated brunch, along with live and silent auctions, entertainment from the Inside Out Band, with dancing — all in support of
conservation, education and advocacy.
Saturday, July 19
DSC’s Life Member Breakfast & Auction will start off Saturday, from 7-10 a.m. at the Grapevine Ballroom. Life Members are the heart of DSC’s mission, leading the way in Conservation, Education, and Advocacy. This exclusive breakfast is open to Life Members and one guest interested in joining, featuring a delicious meal, mimosa and Bloody Mary bar, inspiring conservation speaker and award-winning chef and restauranteur Mike Robinson, and a thrilling live auction — all celebrating the impact of your support.
The grand finale is Saturday evening, with the DSC Foundation Gala & Auction, with speaker Michael Schneider, founder of Driftwood Outdoor Guide & Business Apprenticeship, exclusive auctions, open bar and exciting raffles — all in support of Conservation Through Hunting. Connect with fellow conservationists and help shape the future of wildlife conservation. The entertainment wraps everything up, from none other than country music superstar Craig Bowen, a Texas A&M graduate who also has been a wildlife biologist, hunting guide and land broker.

The sounds echoed through the New Zealand mountains.
“Lili,” “Lili,” Carson and I yelled back at the empty pickup truck where we’d left Lili in hot pursuit of a tremendous stag the last afternoon of the hunt. Suddenly, the adrenaline pulsing through us from the quick climb and exhilaration of the perfect shot transitioned seamlessly to concern over Lili’s whereabouts and failure to return our shouts. Where had she gone?
Then a small frame silhouetted on the hillside where, 30 minutes prior we laid prone to shoot the stag. It eased our anxiousness. Lili had climbed all the way up to join us in celebration after she watched the stag fall, amazingly in the same time it took us to walk down.
Her adrenaline, like ours, was pumping from the success, and it didn’t matter that I’d walked her up, down, and around almost every mountain between Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka that week in pursuit of stags. She was climbing one more to share in the excitement with her husband on his kill. During the whole trip with Glen Dene Hunting and Fishing, the Sams clan showed as much interest and enthusiasm in each others’ hunts as their
own, if not more. Both Adrienne and David harvested stags as early as possible so they were free to tag along on hunts with their daughters and sons-inlaw. The happiness and pride in David’s eyes, sharing in Lili’s success, was as great as I’d seen in any client with their own animal.
Through my years guiding, I have witnessed similar priorities in other families at times; people coming together from varying walks of life eager to share in one another’s hunts. This impressive selflessness and joy at others’ successes is inspiring.
In the Sams’ case, both adult daughters have their own lives, now in different places with their husbands. Lili and her husband, Carson, moved all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska to pursue more hunting opportunities. Still, the whole family was drawn together during their New Zealand stag hunt at Glen Dene.
It’s like the timeless question of the chicken or the egg. Who can say if it’s passion for hunting that binds these families together no matter their stage of life, or if it’s the love of family that draws its members to hunting as a way to connect? I’d say it’s probably a bit of both.
This passion manifested in the Sams clan from an early age. The girls, Lili and Mimi, grew up as part of the Dallas
Safari Club hunting community and started sharing in international family hunting trips as early as high school. When offered any type of vacation for their college graduations, both chose hunts in new places. The hunting community and hunting as a way to see the world was so engrained that as teenagers, unprovoked, they each promised their dad to marry a hunter so the family traditions would continue.
The Sams girls lived up to this promise. Mimi and her husband, Dean, even went to Argentina for their “Huntingmoon,” and Lili bought a hunt for her and her husband, Carson, to South Africa the week she got back from her hunt with us in New Zealand.
While these ladies will most certainly continue the hunting tradition in their own families, the timing of this trip was especially important for David and Adrienne, who viewed it as the last family trip with their girls before the dynamics changed. For David, it was reminiscent of his first international hunting trips with Lili and Mimi; trips he felt induced an increased awareness and understanding in his daughters, enhancing their confidence and self-reliance while underscoring their appreciation of others. This hunt in New Zealand had new challenges with the intense terrain and wary, high-strung
classic Otago, backcountry stags. Mimi and Dean considered it the most challenging hunt they’d partaken in yet. After hunting hard for Mimi’s stag in the high country, Dean continued the long hours in tough terrain for his stag. On the last day, his guide, Simon, refused to let him loosen his standards on a stag, but instead insisted on taking him out one more morning before driving him to meet the others at Queenstown himself during his slim spare time between clients. Their resolve to their quest paid off, and Dean carried out a backcountry stag of his dreams.
Impressive antlered heads on the wall always look spectacular. Yet, they mean even more to the ones who pushed themselves the extra vertical mile, not wavering from their goal despite easier routes and easier trophies.
Like other international hunts the family shared together, the experience at Glen Dene presented dramatic changes in Adrienne and David’s daughters and their husbands. It’s likely their next family hunting trip will center around their grandbabies, rather than their babies. Mimi climbed and hiked through the mountains, already with the next generation of the hunting family on the way.

Is your hunting gear heavy and bulky? Does it cause you to either shiver or sweat, depending on the conditions?
The solution? Head straight to the KUIU retail store in Dallas and enter the world of hightech hunting clothing and gear.
Originally developed for mountain hunting, KUIU has expanded into the whitetail, waterfowl, upland and everyday wear markets, with the most innovative and technologically advanced products covering you from head to toe.
KUIU’s pants, jackets and gear are ultra-quiet and lightweight. For whitetail hunters, the Super Down Haven Hooded Jacket and bib will equip you for extreme cold, and the Encounter Divide 2800 backpack will hold everything you need with ease.
Duck and goose hunters will appreciate the windproof and waterproof Paragon Storm Shell Parka & Bib, and the breathable Pro HD Flex Zip waders, the first breathable hunting wader designed with functional stretch from chest to boot, and the DeltaStorm 2200 Submersible Backpack will carry your gun and keep your shells and gear dry.
Other new gear includes everything from socks to rain gear, the HD Pro Mud Boot and, for the upland hunter, the Upland Field Vest in camo or blaze orange.
While the ultralight KUIU brand was initially developed for sheep hunters who needed lightweight protection in extreme conditions, those innovations are now adapted for all types of hunting situations.
“The expansion into these other lines allow hunters of all species to experience worldclass gear, designed to perform in the most extreme conditions,” said Vice President of Brand Marketing Kevin Wilkerson. “Now, people can wear KUIU brands on all of their hunts.”
It's time to think about replacing that old, heavy gear. Head to the Dallas KUIU store at 13846 Dallas Parkway, Ste. 100, where you can touch, feel and try on gear that will help you move like you’re 10 years younger. And in August of this year, another location will open in San Antonio’s Alamo Quarry Market!

Chris McCarthy is an unassuming Kiwi, slender and fit from hiking mountains almost daily, and who can carry huge animals up and down New Zealand’s Southern Alps. If you listen closely to the soft-spoken man, you can pick up the tremble in his voice when he talks about the majestic wild Otago stags he chases.
McCarthy, and hunting partner Gary Innis, have authored a book about the Otago red stag, a Scottish bloodline of wild red deer in New Zealand, thought to sport the most beautiful antlers of any wild red deer on earth.
The last of a line of legendary guides still doing the hard work of pursuing the wild stag, his book is an epic story of one man’s belief that guided free-range red stag hunts in New Zealand had a real value.
The book, “Otago Red Stags – Yesterday’s Trophies Today,” clearly comes from the heart and incredible memories of the long-time professional guide. The first section of the book explains McCarthy's life and the Otago red stag, while the remainder is a collection of hunting stories that will make you feel like you’re tagging along with each hunter and guide. You’ll read with amazement at how McCarthy can remember such vivid details of every hunt, especially after you learn he recalls each hunt, shot and each hunter purely from memory, with no notes.
You’ll find stories of rock-bottom setbacks, glassing wild country for miles, and the satisfaction of connecting a modern-day hunter with a bloodline of deer that once drew royalty and aristocrats from across the globe.
“I laughed and cried, felt my stomach lurch — all of it,” said Susie Gray Biehle, retired publisher at the Austin American-Statesman and former executive vice president at USA Today. “That’s what good storytelling does and you’ve nailed it.”
One hundred years ago, Otago red stags set the gold standard for antler beauty and symmetry.
Today, thanks to the tireless efforts of McCarthy and landowner David Emmerson, these stags are free-range and wild, and extremely tough to hunt.
The coffee table-sized book contains 120,000 words and 470 photographs, and is sure to become a collector’s item for any hunter who has dreamed of hunting wild red stags in the craggy Southern Alps of New Zealand.
McCarthy is currently the President of the New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides. He lives with his family of girls on acreage overlooking the town of Lake Hawea.
“Otago Red Stags – Yesterday’s Trophies Today” is available at McCarthy’s website, hawea-hunting.co.nz, with a current price of $295. Limited individually numbered and signed books also are available. McCarthy can be contacted directly at chris@hawea-hunting.co.nz.

From its award-winning wingshooting program to trophy whitetail and exotics, world-class bass fishing and our national champion sporting clays instructor, there is something for everyone at Greystone Castle.
The Gold Medal whitetail deer program offers an all-inclusive package based on the opportunity to hunt the opening weekend of the season. Not restricted by score, it is an exclusive chance to hunt for the whitetail of your dreams.
As evidenced by being named the Orvis 2015 Wingshooting Lodge of the Year, Greystone has mastered the art of bird hunting. The ever-popular mixed bag hunt includes quail, pheasant, chukar and Hungarian partridge. This upland walking hunt allows guests to experience great pointing dogs working over rolling terrain specially farmed for optimal bird habitat. The European pheasant hunt is a great way to get lots of shooting action and watch Labradors do what they do best — retrieve birds. The mallard hunts offer a great chance to improve your skills over water while the fast-flying dove hunts offer an adrenaline rush every hunter craves.
If you are looking for something different, you will find it in the exotic pasture full of animals from around the world. Species from Africa, Asia, South America and Europe roam the North Texas plains and thrive in the southern climate. Breeding herds of axis deer, aoudad, blackbuck antelope, sika and fallow deer mean there are plenty of trophies to be taken.
For those looking to relax and enjoy the water, Greystone offers more than 120 acres of stocked bass lakes. From small private lakes to the 80-acre
Thurber Lake, every type of fishing opportunity exists. From fly-fishing to spincasters or simple hook and bobber, there is a method for everyone. Kayaks and paddleboards let you go off on your own adventure or you can jump on a pontoon boat to sneak to the honey holes.
Two championship sporting clays courses, two 5-stands, a training course and a wobble deck challenge every level of shooter. Our new 400-yard rifle and pistol range offers steel targets at a variety of distances. Hone your skills on the new archery course featuring a tri-level static range and a three dimensional walking course. Or just enjoy the scenic hiking and biking trails.
What appeals to Greystone visitors is its top-of-theline accommodations and gourmet meals. Guests enjoy 26 private rooms, gourmet dining from an executive chef, conference facilities and a swimming pool with a hot tub and a steam room. Along with this is the 2,600 square-foot pavilion facility with a custom bar, large seating areas, 65-inch TVs, carved limestone fireplace, Laser Shot, billiards and an overlook terrace with a custom outdoor fire pit.
The ownership and staff are dedicated to creating one of the finest sporting experiences found anywhere in the world. Long-term habitat improvements and wildlife management have made Greystone an extraordinary hunting venue.

Pursuing peacock bass in the heart of the Amazon while enjoying five-star comfort is on many anglers’ bucket list. And it’s easier than you think.
From Miami, Florida, a 5-hour flight gets you to Manaus, Brazil, where you’re met by the Capt. Peacock crew. Seemingly minutes later, you’re aboard the certified luxury floating hotel, the 165-foot Rio Negro Queen, for a day-long, first-class voyage up the Rio Negro River.
From your deluxe stateroom to the available pool, solarium, gym, spa, bar/lounge and restaurant, you’re traveling in style. If your mind is still on the fishing, following the yacht is an armada of Tracker boats waiting to take you on your adventure.
The vision began in 2004 when Brazilian-born Leonardo Leao sought to create world-class fishing excursions in style.
After a day traveling the river, it’s time to go fishing. Peacock bass isn’t the only species to target, with arowana, rainbow bass, redtail catfish also in abundance. Aboard the new Tracker boats, you’ll use the best equipment, including Shimano reels.
And you’ll need them. The peacock bass are big and aggressive here, with a real chance at a 20-pounder.
Trips are customized to each angler’s preference—be it fly, baitcasting or spinning. Captain Peacock provides custom rods and gear, handpicked lures and English-speaking guides who know the fish, the waters, and the tactics needed to land trophies.
After a hard day of fishing, Capt. Peacock’s master chef prepares unforgettable meals. For those who need to stay in touch, unheard of in the Amazon — internet and satellite television are available at no extra charge. Even for those who don’t want to fish all the time, activities include jungle walks and cultural visits.
“You can fish hard and still have fun,” Leao said.
Five full days of fishing round out the trip, followed by an overnight trip back to Manaus before heading home.

It’s your first trip to Grapevine, other than regular stops at the nearby DFW International Airport. After exhibiting or attending the DSC Summer Expo all day, you have some free time. You were familiar with some Dallas spots, but not so much in this suburb.
What should we do?
If a glass of wine is your thing, consider checking out one of the town’s 11 wineries and wine tasting rooms, as the town has a healthy wine scene.
If you want to look around and stop along the way, walk the Historic Main Street District, just blocks away from the Gaylord. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars if your feet are already tired.
For dinner, there are plenty of options, from fancy steakhouses like Bob’s Steak & Chop House, to burger joints and coffee shops. For Mexican food, consider Esparza’s Restaurante Mexicano, it’s been in place since Grapevine was a small town and it’s close by. For a burger, Jake’s is worth a stop, or you could mix in Tolbert’s original chili recipe, called the Bowl of Red.
For a beer, head to Lone Star Outdoor News’ favorite spot in town, Wilhoite’s. It’s on Main Street, in a building constructed in 1914, and is a favorite hangout for hunters, fishermen, locals and even bikers. Tell owner Eric Parker we sent you and he might give you a free beer. If you’re real hungry, the buffet will definitely fill you up.
Most people think wearing bison socks in summer sounds insane. Wrong. Bison thrived in 100-degree prairie summers and in winters with temperatures down to minus 40.
Bison fiber regulates temperature both ways. When it's hot, the fiber creates airflow channels that cool you down, wicking moisture twice as fast as fine wool, all while staying naturally antimicrobial. This is why they're perfect for summer.
Synthetic "performance" socks are doing the opposite: trapping heat, breeding bacteria and shedding microplastics into your skin. They also smell bad. Our Casual Crew sock keeps you cool and odor-free even after days of wear.
At The Buffalo Wool Co., our yarn bases are always natural fibers, so everything touching your skin is bison fiber, merino wool, mulberry silk and other natural materials. We douse some nylon or polyester in the overall construction to make these socks durable, but none of that touches your skin.
“These socks have a great fit, are comfortable, wear well, but most amazing of all, they are odor free,” said customer Curtis S. “No joke, I have worn these socks regularly for three days at a time and up to five days with no smell. You won’t be disappointed.”
Try The Buffalo Wool Co.’s Casual Crew 2.0 Ultralight Gear Crew Socks and feel for yourself why bison is the best material for every season. Made from 34 percent American bison down, 33 percent Merino wool and 33 percent bamboo (base yarn), the socks cost $34.
To purchase these USA-made socks, order from thebuffalowoolco.com and qualify for free standard shipping on all orders over $100. In-stock orders placed before 10 a.m. will ship the same day. Satisfaction is 100-percent guaranteed.

There’s a lot going on under the surface of a lake or pond, and when the body of water is the centerpiece of your rural retreat, unseen changes can catch you off-guard.
Some think once a lake or pond has been built, it will naturally take care of itself. But that is simply not the case if you want a thriving fishery or a landscape water feature that will maximize the aesthetics and recreational possibilities for a property.
“Pond and lake management is best not left to chance,” said John Jones, president of Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “A properly maintained pond or lake will grace your ranch or farm with natural beauty and endless recreation options for generations to come.”
Lochow Ranch’s certified team of biologists and water maintenance experts provides the full range of lake and pond management techniques, including water quality and clarity testing and improvement, vegetation control, removal of pond weeds, liming, fertilizing, algae control, erosion, sediment control, identification and control of predators and much more.
If a fishery is your goal, Lochow Ranch’s experts bring state-of-the-art techniques and expertise to maximizing your environment for game fish to thrive. The team is known across the South for its electrofishing surveys that yield the most accurate inventory of a lake’s fish population. The company also provides
fish stocking, including a full range of game and forage fish, as well as supplemental fish feeders that help spur growth.
“We’re growing some really big fish,” Jones said.
New technologies and management techniques are at the forefront.
“We’re using drones to help analyze lakes and fisheries, and we’re constantly working toward solutions on otter deterrence and trapping — they can wipe out a lot of your best and biggest fish,” Jones said.
Everything starts with the property owners’ goals for the lake, whether swimming, boating, or a fishing hotspot for family and friends.
“Many property owners like some combination of all three,” Jones said.
Lochow Ranch provides turnkey pond and lake management and maintenance services to landowners across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The company also works in partnership with its affiliated company, Shoreline Consulting, to design and build new lakes and expand or renovate existing ones.
These professional techniques take the guesswork out of maintaining your body of water and ensure you can make faster progress toward your goals.
“We can establish fundamental management practices,” Jones said. “Having that solid foundation can help your lake
thrive despite seasonal disturbances and broader environmental conditions.”
Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas. They have consulted on more than 20,000 properties across the region — and they are offering their services into the southeastern states.
“Our aim is to help you reach your goals so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful body of water,” Jones said.
