BP OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS TO LSCPROCESS TECH STUDENTS

BP is partnering with the Lone Star College-Process Technology Center to offer thousand of dollars in scholarships to 15 students The oil and gas company awarded $8,000 per student to be paid per semester for four semesters. The recipients had to have above a 2.5 GPA and be open to participating in a BP internship experience.

The students will also have a chance to participate in a year-long internship program with BP. During the internship, graduates will get hands-on experience at various BP facilities

Jonathan Herrera is one of the student recipients. “When I saw that I was one of the choices for the internship, I really thought it could help me as someone with no process experience and no refinery, to get my foot in the door, it just opened a whole opportunity to starting my career. ”

The internships will take place in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and X divisions GOM is an offshore platform experience that introduces students to life on an offshore rig The GOM experience was a weeklong experience in March where they traveled to Houma, Louisiana, and learned the life of a Production Operator. X is an onshore experience in Shreveport, Louisiana. In conjunction with Shell, participants will spend a week this month learning about the life of a Process Operator.

Dr Roger Chambers, Dean of Instruction, thanked BP for offering this life-changing opportunity for students "These investments bring gravitas to our Process and Instrumentation Technology programs These gestures show students that opportunities do exist at the end of the collegiate journey.”

PHI THETA KAPPA AWARDS

Congrats to LSC-Kingwood’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for nabbing 18 awards at the 2024 Texas Regional Convention last month in Corpus Christi The Kingwood chapter, Alpha Lambda Xi, was named a Nancy Long Continued Excellence Award-winning chapter, which means it was recognized as a Texas Top Chapter for three consecutive years in the Texas region, which is the largest, with 92 chapters.

At the convention, the students were able to celebrate their work over the past year, attend sessions featuring nationally recognized speakers, attend workshops designed to develop as leaders for our campus and community, and the event culminated with an awards ceremony and gala.

Dr Jared Miller and Dr Matthew Newton are the advisors for the chapter Dr Newton thanked the college and its leadership for their continued support. “Though these awards are indicative of the incredible work that our officers, members, and collaborating students have done over this year, these accomplishments also owe a massive debt of gratitude to you all as well. Without the amazing support that our chapter receives from the administration, faculty, and staff here at Lone Star College-Kingwood, none of this would have been possible.”

THREE LSC-KINGWOOD STUDENTS SEMI-FINALISTS FOR JACK COOKE KENT SCHOLARSHIP

A huge accomplishment for three LSC-Kingwood students. Alana Aristimuno, Esbeidy Torres Ibarra, and Terrie Cook are all semifinalists for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. It is a highly selective scholarship for the nation’s top community college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities

Alana Aristimuno is an immigrant from Venezuela studying biomedical engineering. “The main purpose for my parents' decision of leaving everything behind was my education, being the reason why opportunities like this are essential for me to take. Being a semifinalist shows me that I was meant to be here and that my parents’ decision was not in vain.”

Esbeidy Torres Ibarra is majoring in criminal justice and hopes to pursue a career as a victim advocate in law enforcement. "I owe much of my success to the incredible support from everyone at LSC-Kingwood, and I am proud to call this campus my home. There are several myths surrounding community college, but the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is helping us overcome these stigmas by acknowledging the grit and talent of students like us."

Terrie Cook says being a semifinalist represents the pinnacle of her efforts in her college career “Being the first woman within my family to attend upper education and then being able to thrive within this realm is a life altering experience.” Cook has been accepted into the Texas Tech Honors College as a biochemistry major where she plans to transition to Texas Tech Hodges School of Pharmacy and obtain her Doctor of Pharmacy.

Cooke Scholars receive generous financial support up to $55,000 per year for two to three years—to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate school Being a semifinalist is itself an excellent recognition for the students upon transfer. Finalists will be announced in early April.

BEATLES SCHOLAR & FORMER KINGWOOD HS GRAD TO VISIT

LSC-KINGWOOD

World-renowned Beatles scholar and former Kingwood High School graduate Dr Kenneth Womack will visit Lone Star College-Kingwood this month to promote his new book

Dr. Womack is currently Professor of English and Popular Music at Monmouth University in New Jersey.

LSC-Kingwood History Professor Steve Davis says it’s an honor to have Womack speak “Ken has become one of the leading Beatles scholars in the world. It is a real point of pride that he grew up in Kingwood just as it is a source of enormous pride that LSC-Kingwood is one of a handful of colleges in the country that offers a semester-long course on the Beatles.”

Womack will be promoting his new book, “Living the Beatles Legend: The Untold Story of Mal Evans ”

“My latest book concerns Beatles roadie Mal Evans,” Womack says. “It’s a vital story because it assists folks in learning more about the band only from the inside out, as it were. Mal was arguably the most trusted member of their inner circle, and his stories are remarkable!”

Womack also has some advice for LSC-Kingwood students.

“They live in an amazing moment of creativity. I would urge them to harness their own artistry and technology to become the next big contentmakers! There’s no better guide than the pioneering sounds of the Beatles!”

Womack will speak on the topic “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah -- Why the Beatles Still Matter” during the Curious Minds lecture on Thursday April 10th at 12:30pm in CLA 112. The lecture is open to the community. Later he will do a book reading and signing at the Continental Club in Houston at 7:30pm Following that will be a performance by the Beatles cover band, Beetle, at 8:30pm.

You can purchase a copy of the book here.

COYOTE BASEBALL TEAM WELCOMES

FIRST FEMALE PLAYER IN 2024

The Coyotes Baseball Team welcomed its first female player of the season.

Keyla Martinez says she’s been playing softball as long as she can remember. She played for Kingwood Park High School’s Panthers team as well as many years of select softball. Keyla also played a season of softball for the Kilgore College Rangers softball team. When she came to LSC-Kingwood, she decided to give baseball a try

“Being the only woman on the baseball team can present some challenges at first. I was nervous about being underestimated by the guys. They treated me like I was one of them and surely didn't take it easy on me at practice, which really meant a lot to me that they had seen me as a teammate and player Not just being a girl.”

Coach Salvador Rico says Keyla has a great attitude and strong skills. “One thing for sure, offensively, Leyla can hold her own as she has demonstrated in recent simulated games at practice.”

As for other young athletes, Keyla urges them to be confident and unapologetically themselves.

“Embrace your uniqueness and strengths, and never let anyone make you feel like you don't belong in the world of sports. Remember that history is made by those who dare to challenge the status quo and break barriers. Your passion, hard work, and dedication can inspire others and pave the way for future generations of athletes.“

Keyla is also shattering stereotypes in her educational journey. She is currently enrolled in the Process Technology Program at the LSCProcess Technology Center.

An update on the Coyote baseball season: The team is currently 4-5. There are 4 more games left in the season The next game is LSCKingwood vs. Arlington Baptist, at the FTC Baseball Field (Home) at 4:30 p.m.
