CAREER CLOSET TRANSFORMED More than 40 volunteers from H-E-B descended on the Career Closet at LSC-Kingwood on April 11th to help transform the closet into a larger space. The build-out of the Career Closet, which is in the Career and Transfer (CAT) Center, was also made possible thanks to a community donation from H-E-B. The grocery chain provided $7,310 to the college to put toward rebuilding the space. The Career Closet provides professional clothing items for students who may not be able to afford them. They are then able to use the clothing for job interviews or career-related events or activities. The closet now also boasts a separate dressing room as well. A ribbon cutting will be held at a later date. More pics here.
Message from Dr. Melissa Gonzalez President LSC-Kingwood
Hello, Coyotes! We are in the final stretch before many of our students will walk across the stage and into the world with a new degree or certificate and hopefully on a path to new beginnings. But students don’t get to that point without incredible support from faculty, staff, and support systems at the college. It’s a team effort and we can’t wait to see it pay off! So, congrats, Grads, and we look forward to your continued success!
-- Go Coyotes!

PROCESS TECHNOLOGY CENTER TEAMS FACE OFF IN NATIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING SKILLS COMPETITION Two teams from the Lone Star College-Process Technology Center competed in the North American Process Technology Alliance’s Troubleshooting Skills Competition (TSC) earlier this month. Led by coach and Process Technology Instructor John Moody, the LSC teams, “MilliAmps” and “Dynamic Diagnostics,” were among the top 12 highest-scoring teams of the qualifying rounds of the TSC. The Troubleshooting Skills Competition was created to allow advanced Process Technology students to demonstrate their hands-on skills in real-time process problem solving. These skills are imperative for those in the industry to ensure understanding of the processes and keep workers safe. Teams from educational institutions from across the country competed for the “NAPTA Troubleshooting Champions” title. “It's very exciting,” shared Team Captain Delynn Hodges. “Even if we don't make it to number one, I'm still just very excited to get that experience, to be able to communicate with other people that have similar interests.” The teams competed in the National Competition on April 24th and 25th at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas. While they did not win, they had the chance to network with industry representatives and participate in team-building activities and hands-on exercises, gaining valuable experience in the field. “Going into this program, I really didn't know anything about this industry and really, anything at all about how this stuff works,” shared Cameron Franklin. “I remember my first class my first semester, I was like they’re speaking a different language in here, but I’ve learned a lot and it’s grown on me. It's a lot more interesting than I anticipated to be. I'm really excited for the future.”

LSC-KINGWOOD MUSIC DIRECTOR COMPOSES COLLEGE ALMA MATER An LSC-Kingwood Music Director is making his musical mark by composing Lone Star College’s first ever system-wide Alma Mater. Dr. Michael Johnson composed the music for the school song, English Professor Christopher Mandia from LSC-Cy-Fair wrote the lyrics, and on Saturday, April 5th, around 30 student vocalists came together at LSCMontgomery campus to record it. “Students from all over the LSC System were involved in forming this ‘allstar’ choir,” said Dr. Johnson. “Our Kingwood students represented our campus at the highest level. They were professional, collegial, and gave outstanding performances over and over as we sought to get the best recording we could.” Calli Walling was one of the students selected. She is a sophomore studying vocal performance and education at LSC-Kingwood. “From the beginning of his career at LSC-Kingwood, Dr. Johnson has made it very clear to all students and staff that he wishes nothing but success for each of us. He is always looking for opportunities for us. A few weeks ago, Dr. Johnson asked if we would be interested in recording an alma mater that he composed for the entire Lone Star College system. Who could say no to leaving your mark on your college’s history forever?” Dr. Johnson shared, “Once I heard it being performed by our ‘all-star’ choir of LSC students at the recording session, I still couldn’t really believe it. We had the goal of creating something that represents the core vision of Lone Star College, the challenges we face, and how we constantly overcome them. I really do think we achieved that.”

LSC-KINGWOOD STUDENT ART ON DISPLAY AT PEARL FINCHER MFA GALLERY IN SPRING Three LSC-Kingwood art students currently have their artwork on display at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring. Alexis Valladares Turcios, Victoria Munguia, and Mya Brandle were selected by their art professors to showcase pieces in the “Lone Star College Student Highlights” exhibit. Alexis, who is studying Fine Arts, says he felt on top of the world when he learned his piece, titled “Caliente,” was selected. “Since Andy Warhol is one of my favorite pop artists, and I mostly do pop art, I've decided to do a pop art painting that has my own design but also has that Andy Warhol style in the painting. This painting means a lot to me because it is my very first painting in an actual museum. This painting is trying to make the multifaceted nature of passion and intensity in a form of pop art.” The exhibit will be on display until May 10th. Admission to the museum is free. LSC-KINGWOOD ECONOMICS PROFESSOR STARS IN HISTORY CHANNEL SHOW LSC-Kingwood Economics Professor Shuang Xu is sharing his experience of appearing on the show “The Food That Built America” on the History Channel. The episode aired April 27th. “Initially, I agreed to participate in The Food That Built America to share my knowledge and passion for ramen. However, I was inspired to also highlight how the story of Chinese cuisine in America is deeply connected to the struggles and perseverance of Chinese immigrants.” Professor Xu says ramen was the first food he learned to cook and truly enjoyed. “Like many college students in America, my early years were filled with ramen. However, unlike the common perception in the U.S., where ramen is often seen as an inferior good, in many Asian cultures, ramen is considered a normal good—its consumption increases as income rises. It holds cultural value and is embraced across all socioeconomic levels.” Xu says after immigrating to the United States, his parents opened and operated two small Chinese restaurants — one in Alvin and the other in Houston. “I grew up in the restaurant environment, spending most of my free time outside of school helping with the family business. Like many Chinese families before us, the restaurant industry provided opportunities that helped us work toward and realize our version of the American Dream.” Professor Xu has an important message for students. “To my students who may be struggling with their cultural identity or uncertain about their future, I want to say this: your background, your story, and your roots are not something to hide—they are your foundation. Just like how Chinese food, once misunderstood and dismissed, became a beloved part of American culture through resilience and adaptation, you too can carve out your own space by embracing who you are. Let your heritage inspire your goals, and remember that challenges— whether cultural or personal—can be the very things that shape your success.” Professor Xu has lectured several times on the LSC-Kingwood campus. You can view his video on The History of Ramen here. His most recent talk on Tariffs, you can watch here.

INSPERITY WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM DONATES $20,000 TO LSC-KINGWOOD Students in Workforce programs at LSC-Kingwood are about to get some extra support, thanks to Insperity. The company is donating $20,000 to the college to put towards its workforce programs. “We deeply admire the impactful work your organization does in our community, and we are honored to support your efforts,” said Insperity Corporate Citizenship Specialist Dana Ledet. “We are eager to see the positive impact this funding will have and look forward to continuing our partnership.” LSC-Kingwood Continuing Education Director Pat Chandler said the funds will be used to help CE students complete one or more of the five Workforce Certificate Programs (Accounting Assistant, Certified Nurse Aide, Clinical Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant, and Electrocardiography Monitor Technician) offered at Lone Star College-Kingwood. “I am excited that we are going to be able to assist our students financially toward reaching their goals of completing one of our many Workforce Certificate Programs,” shared Chandler. “We have many students who apply and are not able to pay the total cost of the programs.” The donation came about through the partnership of LSC-Kingwood and Insperity’s Workforce Development Program. Scholarships will be awarded during the 2025 summer and fall semesters. The goals of Workforce Certificate Programs are to allow students to acquire new skills relevant to the job market, gain credentials or certifications to open doors for promotions at current jobs, and boost their earning capacity by moving into higher-skilled/higher paying jobs. These goals satisfy community needs by directly addressing gaps in employment and skills within the local economy.

WOMEN’S SOCCER WINS CHAMPIONSHIP The Women’s Soccer Team has brought home the Championship trophy, and we’re hearing from one of the players about her experience playing for the team. The final score was 1-0 and Nadia Merino scored the winning goal. Merino says playing club soccer pushed her not only to grow as a player but also as a person. “Being part of this team has really shown me what it means to stay committed, work hard, and support one another through the ups and downs of a season. Winning the championship was honestly one of the best moments of my life so far—it felt like the hard work, long practices, and challenging games finally paid off. Sharing that moment with my teammates, who have become like family, made it even more special. The support from coaches, teammates, and the community has really motivated me to continue pushing myself. I also want to thank the Men's soccer team; they have pushed many girls to keep going, and their support was out of this world.” Merino is working toward her associate degree in science, then plans to transfer to a university. She hopes to continue playing soccer while finishing her bachelor’s degree. “Lone Star has played a massive role in helping me see that path more clearly, and I’m excited about what’s ahead,” she said.

The last time the Coyotes were conference champions was in 2015. The team traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, May 3rd and 4th to battle it out to try and advance to the Conference at the NCBA World Series in Alton, Illinois. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the series. But they ended the season 17-5 and have much to be proud of. “This group of ball players this past year really came through with a great attitude,” said Coach Salvador Rico. ”But more importantly, we were on the same page where no one put themselves above the team. We all understood our roles and excelled with our talents collectively.” Several players will be moving on to the next level. Number one starter Blake Ward will be transferring to Brookhaven College (NJCCA) to pitch for their team. Relief pitcher Jose Chavez will be taking his talents to Florida National University (NAIA). Congrats again to the team and we look forward to next season!
