FOCUS ON EMPLOYMENT AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Build your LinkedIn profile LinkedIn is fast becoming the leading and most effective networking tool. It's a social network, but for professional, with the aim of helping you make connections, build your network and follow companies you are interested. You can search for jobs and opportunities, and showcase your skills and experience. Be honest. Just like a CV, don't put anything on your profile that you can't back up with proof. And be professional: LinkedIn is not like Instagram or Facebook. Keep focused, and don't post if it's not relevant to your future career aims. All work experiences and skills are valuable. LinkedIn is all about branding yourself in a professional way so list skills and accomplishments but keep the profile picture professional.

Relate skills to the line of work you want, even without work experience you have probably learnt the skills in college. It will take time to build up a network so start as soon as possible and build up slowly. Every connection can be useful and even if not in the industry you want to work, someone in their network may be. Have you been on a company visit? If so, find them on LinkedIn and follow them. Has the college had a visiting speaker? Why not send them a connection request. Use every connection to your advantage, and your network will begin to grow. You never know who you might 'meet'! Most professionals want to help the next generation succeed. What have you got to lose?

A

Pros Full-time job with training towards a qualification including a full degree. You will earn a wage and learn at the same time. No fees and no student debt! Full employment rights, holiday, sick pay and terms of employment. You will gain a recognised qualification at the end - and maybe even a permanent job. You may be able to work close to home - or spread your wings and start a new adventure. You will be building your professional network from the start. A University degree doesn't guarantee a job - an apprenticeship combines education with key skills, helping you to be more job-ready.

Cons You will be working and studying at the same time. It may involve a lot of evening and weekend study. It's not the easy option! You will not get the full University experience. It may take longer to gain the qualification. Competition - you may be one of 1000 applicants applying for 1 apprenticeship position. You may not be able to start at Degree Level - some require skills you may not have gained from your Level 3 studies and you may need to start as a Level 2 or 3 Apprentice and work your way up.

Dylan Kimberley

Dylan Kimberley Accounting Apprentice What are you doing since leaving Long Road? I started an apprenticeship in August 2021 at an Accountancy firm in Cambridge called PEM.

How does the apprenticeship work? Our apprenticeship functions by spending one day at college (an accountancy training centre on Hills Road) and the other four days at work, full time.

After no prior work experience in this industry, I did not know what to expect before starting here, however, the firm is very friendly and supportive of our progress. With an intake of 17 of us in August, spread over different ages around 18-25, I had a great network of like-minded colleagues/friends in a very similar position to me.

What is the qualification you are aiming to achieve? The qualification is called AAT, which is usually done by school leavers, such as myself. There is another qualification called ACA/ACCA which you can only do once you have qualified with the AAT or you have a degree from a university (which could be a degree on anything, no matter how similar it is to accountancy!). These students tend to do a whole week or two of college days at once, rather than a day a week spread out over a longer period. Once qualifying with ACA/ACCA you are known as a qualified accountant. This qualification is equivalent to a masters degree.

What type of work are you doing? The majority of us are in the audit sector, which is different to virtual finances (VFO), tax, corporate finance and private clients. We all have different job roles across these sectors yet we share a lot of the same training/studying.

How has the transition to work been for you? Working full time took a lot of getting used to, as I had begun this apprenticeship after a long 14 weeks of summer holiday, however, I believe it is a sensible route to go down instead of university as it means you can gain experience, a qualification and a salary all at the same time, while hopefully qualifying sooner, in a specific industry, than those at university. What support does PEM give you? We each have assigned mentors and appraisers that we can go to at any time for help or if we’re struggling with anything, as well as 6 monthly appraisals where we can talk over our progress at work and college to see how we’re doing. Are there any exams involved in your apprenticeship? At college after our modules, which for AAT last anywhere between 2 weeks at a time to 6 weeks at a time (one day a week), we have an exam which we can book ourselves whenever we feel ready. We have already had two since we started in August. These exams all lead to a final synoptic exam.

What else is involved in the qualification side of your apprenticeship? There is a lot of admin that comes with our apprenticeships, such as learning logs to show how many hours of our time is spent learning, development tasks and appraisal forms, all for our study provider and our employers. All of this, and the exams, help towards a grade our employer comes up with which is a reflector of how well we’re doing overall. What about the day to day work? In the workplace, straight away we were given actual work for actual clients, rather than any practice pieces, and if we got stuck we always had multiple people to go to to ask for help if needed. My first week was at a client's office and on my second day, I was talking to the client on my own and going through some accounting material. What are your plans for the future? I have enjoyed my first 4 / 5 months in the workplace and plan to go onto the ACA qualification once I have finished the AAT qualification in Spring 2023.
