It's that time of year when nervous students gather to sit exams. It's an age-old experience but for this generation of students, a unique one because most will be sitting exams for the first time having missed GCSEs during the Covid lockdown years. Thoughts inevitably turn to the future and the destinations of our Year 2 students who will be leaving soon to start the next stage of their life's journey. It was with that in mind that we organised a Jobs Fair for all students to which a wide range of employers were invited some looking to recruit urgently for summer jobs and apprenticeships. They ranged from the NHS to Grant Thornton, from agriculture to environmental services. What's clear is that there are many industries desperate to recruit and there are many opportunities available to our students. In our careers guidance work we are focusing on the importance of employability or transferable skills. These are the skills that everyone needs in every job and in a global economy in which jobs are being constantly invented and reinvented it is important that young people know what these skills are and how to acquire and develop them so they can adapt to this change. A career is no longer seen as a straight path of progression from entry to retirement. This is the age of the 'squiggly career' as Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis have described in their best selling book, in which the new norm is switching between careers and learning new skills all the time. This can seem daunting but we are confident that this generation of students who have lived through Covid won't be daunted and will take full advantage of the new world of opportunity that exists for them. No doubt there will be many more unexpected challenges to face in the future but with the right skills and a positive mindset, they will succeed and we're here to support them as much as possible. We wish all our students the best of luck in their exams.
