Legacy Terrace and Technology
Last school year, the Sixth grade team applied for and received a grant from the Michael Jordan Foundation for $2,500 based upon their volunteer work with the elderly at Legacy Terrace. Mrs. Steiner, one of the computer teachers, decided she would like to use the same volunteer work by the Sixth graders, and apply for a Technology grant. She wrote and applied for a state-wide grant called Technology Literacy Challenge Fund or just TechLit. Mrs.Steiner and the Sixth grade Team received part of a grant for $58,838 which is to establish a computer lab full of "imacs" and to acquire a variety of computer equipment, software and even a few "ibooks."
The Tech Lit grant was created by President Bill Clinton to help states focus on increasing the amount of technology used in the schools and to up-date the already existing computer labs. President Clinton allocated each state a sum of money for computers and other technological needs in the schools. From the money received through the grant, the Sixth Grade team is planning to use the new computer lab and the software to make individual student books on the cqmputer, called When You Were Young, When I Was Young. The team is also buying quilting supplie~ with the moq.ey so students can learn about the history of quilting and make quilts with the residents from Legacy Terrace. The quilts will then be raffled off and the proceeds given to the Charlie Brown kids and St. Elizabeth's hospital.
Because of the hard work by the Sixth grade teachers and by Mrs. Steiner, this year's sixth grade students have the opportunity to be part of an incredible experience. Not only will these students be the first to use the new Imac lab, but they will also create new friends with the residents at Legacy Terrace, collabarate and design a book based on those new friendships and the comparison of each others histories, and make and raffle off a piece of art, the quilts, for a good cause. All of this new technology and friendships because of a few teachers, who had an idea to create a sense of community and who were
not afraid of hard work.
