Not only was this a special year for Lefler students, but one our country will long remember. The 200th birthday of our Constitution will have long-reaching effects on our generation as we ponder our responsibilities to mankind and our own communities. The words of our f orefathers will continue to guide us throughout our educational years and as we enter the workforce. Perhaps we will be called upon to change the Constitution. Can we accept the challenge?
Lefler's 1987-88 year boring? Of course not! This ·year was all a scampering of f eet. There were no dull moments. The 7th graders were not the only ones who had to adjust, we all had to make a change for the new seven period day. Another difference this year was our Venture in Partnership (VIP) with Bryan Hospital, as our ' 7th graders visited the Health Fair. Creative juices ran through our 8th graders' minds as they created their childrens books. The veterans of Lefler did everything from dissecting pigs to P romotion; they definitely left their tracks!
From the sports point of view, the year was.filled with successes, no major dejeets. Select Choir stamped their footprints in the hearts of choral directors in Minneapolis, with the support of the January Jamboree.
We always welcome new neighbors, but this year we acquired one very special n e ighbor from the south. We joined forces with Bryan Hospital in Venture in Partnership (VIP). Groups from Select Choir to 7th graders to. Student. Council have associated with our new friends. Lefler looks forward to years of partnership with Bryan.
A s 9th graders leave, and new 7th graders come in, our experiences at Lefler will always be remembered.

We have left deep imprints among these pin_k-lockered walls; from running around the school in our old gym sneakers, to dancing the slow songs in our soft -soled shoes. We are.finally mature enough to handle page 117 in The D iary of Anne Frank, and yet we are foolish enough to oink along with ''The B easts of England''!!! We have set our footprints for others to follow, but now it is time for us to follow the tracks of our elders . . . up the stairway to high school.

Lefler Staff of 87-88 stepped up to greater heights. Many teachers attended summer school or workshops to enhance • their teaching skills. They have also been thinking about the middle school plan. The plan could come into effect within the next year. Lefler teachers have a mixture of feelings about changing Lefler to a middle school. Staff members definitely increased the size of their prints.

The 1987-88 Publications Class started the year with a study ofphotographic techniques and planning. An in-depth look at Hollywood stars and the history of the movie industry spanned the first quarter. Following the selection of staff members and the theme, class members scheduled pictures, learned the mechanics of the wheel and copy pencil, and frustrated over deadlines! Once all the copy was delivered to the printer, the class concentrated on the Literary Magazine. The greatest asset of this group was the friendship and closeness attained, especially under stress.

This year Peer Pals was a big success. Many people participated in this activity which taught students to ask better questions and to be better listeners. The students who participated became more aware of the different types of people who went to this school, and learned to accept all people. Hopefully, this successful program will be around next year for many more students to participate in.

''Just Say No'' is a new club which was developed to help students say no to drugs and alcohol. The first meeting, which was held in the library, featured a video which showed kids_ in certain ''pressure'' situations. Another point which the club is trying to make, is the influence students have on their peers. This is a very worthwhile club, which may help someone say no to drugs and alcohol, and yes to life.

onismith,
This y ear's basketball teams were su c cessful because of their dedication to the total program. The y were committed for three hours a day , five days a week. One hour each night was study hall and the next two hours practice time. Mr. Carroll, the coach of the varsity team, said , "/ was proud of this team because each one of them worked hard to improve their basketball skills. '' Both ninth grade teams started off the season as very good teams; the Varsity finished the season 8-0 and Reserves ended up 7-1. After winning the city championship, the Varsity went on to become the.first boy s team to win the tournament championship. The Reserves went on to win the tournament to avenge their only loss. The undefeated Varsity team also won the sportsmanship award. All-in-all, both teams showed great skill and talent. The seventh and eighth graders both had good seasons with the seventh graders going undefeated.
