Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace. Give me, amidst the day's confusion the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tension of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations.... slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to read a few lines from a good book. Remind me of the fable of the hare and the tortoise; that the race is not always to the swift; that there is more to life than measuring its speed. Let me look up at the branches of the towering oak and know that ... it grew slowly ... and well. Inspire me to send my own roots down deep into the soil of life's endearing values... that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny. This can be overwhelming, as well as being an exciting time of new beginnings. The changes require a deeper look at your needs and wants. A release from where you have come, to a shift into a new direction. Often we have outgrown furniture or accessories we are living with, but hold on without realizing. It›s an opportunity to honestly assess what pieces are broken, worn out or no longer fit your personality and lifestyle. Moving your life into a new environment creates a vision of your furniture and possessions seen with fresh eyes. You can evaluate what has served you in the past and redesign how you want to live going forward. Purging makes space for new and unexpected results.

Concerns about the cost to purchase new pieces are often unfounded. Many times you are afraid to get rid of something because of the high cost to replace it. Often you don›t need to replace it at all. Every area on the floor or space on a wall does not have to be filled. Less is more! An example of this is when beginning a design project remove pictures from small walls! Leave more empty space there and everywhere. Using larger pieces (in dimension, not necessarily scale) is a great design trick to create drama and spend less money. Repurpose! Every design choice needn’t be expensive. When carefully thought out you, will realize you have options. First consider the pieces you already have. Envision them used differently. Choose what to keep. Changing color, finish or adding a new detail such as hardware, lamp shade or pillow can add interesting focal points. Paint a piece of furniture an accent color and/or add molding, beads or metal accents. Thereby renewing the pieces you already own you have created a unique and personalized style.

The best way to see your furniture and accessories differently, is to place them in different rooms than they were previously. Don’t do the obvious. Think “out of the box” and have fun. Decorating is often taken too seriously. When you realize there are no “have to’s” in decorating you can relax and play with furniture placement. For example, turning a dining table just 45 degrees can change the flow of the area. Or move the dining room furniture into the family room or living room and the previous dining room or kitchen eating area can become a more intimate sitting room. After all where do family and guests hang out? Best advice to avoid interior design mistakes: • Live in your new home for at least a month before making any design decisions. • Before buying new furniture place your existing furniture to emulate the new look. • Don’t do everything at once. • Consider your life style, not what the rooms were intended for. • Explore using rooms differently. • Don’t duplicate function in rooms. • Don’t buy because something is on sale. • Most important, love everything you bring into your home. The way you live and choices you make can affect your happiness and wellbeing. Make sure your environment supports the lifestyle you want to live today. Remember, rooms have no feelings, YOU do!

2016 Tax Benefits for Charitable Donations

M

aking charitable contributions is a great way to give back to our community, and it makes us feel better as human beings. Well now charitable contributions in Arizona will net you larger tax credits beginning in 2016! Arizona has amended its tax code to increase the amount of tax credit for cash contributions made to qualifying charitable organizations and qualifying foster care organizations, and allows taxpayers to receive separate credits for both of these contributions.

Increases the tax credit for cash contributions to qualified charitable organizations from $200 to $400 for a single individual or a head of household, and from $400 to $800 for a married couple filing jointly.

Specifies that taxpayers are eligible to receive both of the following tax credits separately: a) A tax credit for contributions made to a qualifying charitable organization. b) A tax credit for contributions made to a qualifying foster care organization.

So a married couple filing a joint return could donate $800 to a qualified charitable organization and $1,000 to a foster care organization and claim both contributions for full credit on their 2016 Arizona Income Tax Return. Of course, these donations are still deductible on the Federal Income Tax Return as charitable contributions as part of your itemized deductions as well. Please consult with your income tax advisor to determine how the new rules will impact your tax situation.

he goal in designing great outdoor spaces is to create a seamless transition and strong visual connectivity from indoors to outdoors. When you realize that the square footage available outside can be in some cases as much or more than your interior square footage, it can be a tremendous loss of opportunity if that area is poorly planned. Very often we find in homes we are asked to remodel that the outdoor living and recreation areas are a series of miscellaneously arranged set of components that were not designed to integrate or complement one another. While all the requisite functions may be there, i.e. pool, spa, terrace areas, bbq, firepits, fountains, lawns, etc., all those parts often do not add up to a greater whole. When there is a well-conceived design of Indoor and Outdoor spaces, those spaces extend the interior living, maximize the usability of both, and enhance your daily living experience. Finding the Best Cooling Options for Hot Garages The best and worst ways to cool a hot garage

T

he garage is a haven for car enthusiasts and hobbyists like woodworkers—that is until the temperatures start to increase. Outdoor work spaces get hot fast when the mercury rises. Whether the garage is your man cave or where you work to make a living, don’t let the heat stop your productivity. There’s a variety of options that can help to keep garages comfortably cool so you can stay on track with your projects, but some are far more effective than others. Do your research and learn the pros and cons of each so you can select the best one for your needs.

Fans

Fans seem like a quick fix to hot garage troubles. Both oscillating and ceiling options are inexpensive and easy to install. The drawback: fans are minimally effective. Fans alone simply circulate stagnant, hot air throughout the space. What’s more, if the garage is large, the air circulation may not spread through the entire area.

AC units

Mobile air conditioners (AC) are more expensive than fans, but can be an effective way to cool garage spaces. Keep in mind, using an air conditioner does require the space to be closed off. Depending what the garage is being used for, this may be impossible for some people. If you have a window in the garage, a window AC unit may work well because it vents directly outside. For garages without windows—which is typically more common —installing AC can be problematic. The unit requires a place to ventilate the heat generated from the compressor. This not only limits the mobility of the unit, but also requires fixed-ductwork and adds another point of heat generation. Harsh refrigerants and energy consumption are other drawbacks. Refrigerants are an integral part of AC options to emit cool air, and running the unit uses a lot of energy which can cause energy bills to skyrocket.

Evaporative coolers

Evaporative cooling is gaining popularity due to its effectiveness and versatility. Portable evaporative coolers cool warm air and drop temperatures using tap water, a pump and a wetted surface to create the naturally occurring process of evaporation. When the air in the garage is pulled across the water, the temperature of that air naturally lowers. This effect is similar to the chill you get coming out of a pool or how the wind off the lake feels cooler. A garage enthusiast’s favorite is the Portacool Jestream 240 because it’s compact, portable and can be used with the garage door open to provide cooling throughout the space. Plus, it’s far more energy efficient than running an AC unit consistently. In fact, it pulls the same amount of electricity as a small household appliance so it won’t zap your energy bill. 7 Reminders for Remodeling & Building Often overlooked issues that can save homeowners tremendously

M

ost people think of concerns like budget, floor-plan, schedule and item selections when building or remodeling a home but there are some key items that many people overlook when building which could have a tremendous impact of if your project runs smoothly or becomes a disaster. These include: 1. Contract Issues First make sure you have a contract with your builder and architect with as much detail as possible prior to starting and then make sure you read and understand the complete contract. Often clients don’t understand their contracts until there is a dispute at which time it is too late to ask questions. 2. Ground Rules Have a meeting prior to starting to agree on ground rules for the project including what times of day can work begin and end, who to contact in case of emergencies, how to protect valuables left in the home or if they should be moved off-site during construction, can the worker’s use one of your bathrooms or will there need to be a rental toilet, how to access the house or job-site including is it acceptable to use a lockbox and an agreement on a plan to minimize dust and noise in your house during the project.

3. Completion Date Determine an estimated completion date with the understanding it may change due to issues like changes in the scope of the project and delays due to weather or materials not being available when needed. If there is an event when the project

needs to be completed like a graduation or wedding make sure this date is communicated prior to starting and allow time for delays to insure your home will be ready when needed. An experienced contractor will tell you if a job can be completed in time for your event or if you should wait to start until after the event. Don’t use another contractor just because they promise to get a project done quicker as you may end up with poor workmanship or get a contractor who tells you what you want to hear to be hired but who then doesn’t meet your timeline anyway. 4. Unexpected Construction Issues Many issues may come up that will not be apparent when a job begins. These may include things like finding mold or other environmental issues, unsafe electrical wiring or leaking or damaged plumbing found behind walls, difficult soil conditions or finding an existing house is not built the way the plans shows it was built. In the contract and your discussions prior to starting address how these types of situations will be resolved with your contractor. 5. Insurance Make sure your contractor is licensed and insured and that you have the proper insurance of your own to protect yourself including potentially a type of insurance called “Course of Construction Insurance” if required for your job. Always speak with your agent prior to starting a project. 6. Children and Pets Make sure you address all items relating to children and pets prior to starting a remodeling project including most importantly how they are going to be kept safe during the project. 7. Change orders and budget contingencies On most jobs owners add items to the scope of work or make more expensive selections then originally budgeted. Changes also may occur that need to be made in order to properly complete the job. Therefore, have a section in your contract addressing how change orders will be handled and keep a contingency fund for unexpected items of at least 15% of the total budget so you don’t run out of money during the project due to extras or unexpected items and so you can afford to purchase selections you want to make your project perfect for you. stable home network is more important than ever. As more devices are able to connect to the network, the better the infrastructure the less hassle for the homeowner. We have all experienced losing the connection to the network or even having the network go down leaving us stranded in our homes. The wireless network is the invisible backbone of the homes that we live in today. Here is a brief description of how this all works. The signal comes into your home from your ISP (Internet Service Provider) being transmitted over Cat5e, Cat6e wiring or coax cable. Once the signal gets into your home it is connected to the modem. From there the signal goes into a wireless router, which is broadcasted wirelessly (Wi-Fi) throughout the home.

A single, stable home network can provide a simple connection and internet access for all of the residents. You do not want to have multiple networks in the same home. Many of the devices that are connected to the network can only be connected to one network at a time. If you have multiple networks throughout the house you are going to have issues with your devices. For example, if you have a thermostat that is network enabled; you would set up the thermostat on one of the networks but would not be able to access the thermostat from the other network. Depending on the type of construction used to build your home, there are many factors that have a negative impact on the range of your wireless network. Concrete and steel are stronger barriers than traditional wood framing and drywall homes. Depending on the size of your home you might be able to use a single wireless router. If the wireless router can be centrally located in the home it will provide the best coverage. If the home is larger, more than 2500 square feet, you may need to install WAPs (wireless access points). These are hardwired with category cable back to the router or a switch that is connected to the router. WAPs extend the coverage geographically of your wireless network. WAPs are also made in an outdoor application for large backyards. If there is a dead spot in the home the addition of a WAP in that area will fix that problem. There are consumer grade and commercial grade network products. The commercial grade products tend to have a much higher output for better range and longer warranties. With proper design and installation, a stable network can truly simplify your life.

Get the Real Facts About LED Bulbs

L

ight-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs have transformed home lighting since coming on the market. Despite proven benefits that far outweigh older lighting options, like incandescent and compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, many people remain hesitant to make the switch. It’s time to finally dispel some common LED myths and get the real facts about these light bulbs so you can choose the best lighting for your home.

Compare the Difference

Myth: LED light bulbs aren’t worth the cost. Fact: LED light bulbs are now only a few dollars more than ordinary light bulbs; significant research and development from manufacturers like Philips Lighting has made LED light bulbs more affordable. Although the initial cost of an LED may be slightly higher than an incandescent light bulb, making the switch to LED lighting provides significant long-term savings. For example, the Philips A19 LED with a warm glow dimming effect has an average lifetime of 25,000 hours. This means if you have a light bulb on for three hours per day, then it will be

20 years before you need to change it. Plus, LEDs use up to 90 percent less energy than ordinary light bulbs; replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lighting will reduce your energy bill. Myth: LED light bulbs are not bright enough. Fact: LEDs can emit the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs while using far less energy. Many consumers look at the wattage of a light bulb to determine its level of brightness, but wattage only measures how much energy a bulb uses. Light levels are measured in lumens. When you compare lumens, a 9.5-watt Philips LED bulb with a warm glow effect is as bright as a 60-watt incandescent bulb - both emit approximately 800 lumens. Myth: LED light bulbs need time to warm up. Fact: It’s a big misunderstanding that LED bulbs need time to warm up before they reach full brightness. While fluorescent or CFL bulbs come on slowly, LEDs are “instantly on” and immediately shine with their full light output. Myth: LED lighting can’t be controlled and dimmed. Fact: Unlike many CFL bulbs, most LED light bulbs are designed to easily dim. Dimmable LEDs can provide the right lighting for any mood or room in your home. For instance, the warm glow dimmable light effect in the Philips A19 LED allows light levels to gradually go from everyday functional lighting to a cozy, relaxing warm glow, replicating the effect of an incandescent bulb when dimmed.
