Dear Friends of Loyola, As I look back over the first six months as president of Loyola High School, I have so many reasons to be proud of our students, faculty and staff, and those who have been generous with Loyola this past year. In this edition, you will read about our new sponsors for the Work Experience Program, our committed and dedicated staff, our championship-caliber football team, and our award-winning debate program. Amidst these accomplishments and so many others, our commitment to service gives me the most pride.

When visitors and Bulldogs alike roam the first floor hallway of our school building, they note and remark openly about the photos from our past Carron dinner and Tigers event. They ask questions about the football team and the sponsorship poster from the Chocolate milk producers showing our varsity players with their chocolate milk “mustaches.” They marvel at the wonderful artwork produced by current students and alums. They note our plaques of remembrance for deceased members of the Bulldog community. However, one aspect of what makes Loyola so special remains hard to capture on a bulletin board or in an article such as this.

Loyola received lots of great press this past semester. I admit to being a proud “poppa” when both our football team and our debate program received recognition in the press in the same week. I stood before the gathering at Morning Prayer and gushed over this accomplishment for all in attendance. I do my best to acknowledge all of the achievements of our staff and students.

I cannot say enough, though, about the service that our faculty and staff perform on behalf of our young men each and every day. I have seen first-hand the lengths to which our teachers will go to help our students continue on the path as life-long learners. Our staff arrives early and stays well past their scheduled end times to assist our students along the way. I have seen our parents pull together to support our young men and provide them with a quality of life that reflects how special they truly are.

On top of all of this, our young men have recognized in themselves the capacity to be “men for others.” This Landmark edition has snippets about a group of our young Rev. Mark W. Luedtke, S.J. men who pulled together a project to fight youth hunger—and they won an award for their efforts. Kathy Gross organized the student body to plant bulbs to honor our veterans—and the newspapers printed an article about the great work performed. Yet the students who do small, often uncelebrated acts of kindness and generosity, impact the Loyola family in quite profound ways. Our seniors continue to perform their Tuesday service projects, groups take time to make cookies and pillowcases for our troops, and individual students head to soup kitchens to serve those most in need.

I have nothing but pride for all the members of our Loyola community who “give and do not count the cost.” The students find ways to make a difference during their time on Pinehurst, and they will continue to make an impact on the lives of others after they graduate.

NEW MARKETING GOES VIRAL Marketing your product is the most intensive way to raise public awareness about your organization. Our young men do the best job of selling Loyola in the workplace, the hallways, and on the athletic fields. This year the Board of Directors added a marketing committee to expand the reach of Loyola into the city to enhance our brand and to help us tell our story.

At the Rev. Malcolm Carron Scholarship Dinner this past October, Marketing Committee Chair Ann Thomas announced the kick-off of our marketing campaign and revealed our new crest (at left) as well as our 20th Anniversary logo commemorating our success and our proud connection to the city of Detroit. We have placed the logo and crest prominently on our materials and spirit wear.

In addition, our “Meet and Greet” events continue. These intimate gatherings increase awareness and introduce new people to Loyola High School without asking anything more than attendance at the event. We provide information about the school, our students, and the career paths of our alumni. Early returns from the events include new people sharing our story, a new Board member, and a new Committee member. We welcome hosts for future events.

PLANTING SEEDS OF SERVICE Coming Together to Commemorate 9/11 The Loyola community, along with members of the military and veterans, planted 600 red, white, and blue bulbs in what will become a “Spring of Hope” garden this spring.

Freshmen and seniors wrote letters of appreciation, poems and prayers to military, military families, and veterans.

Seniors prepared and served a meal for people at the Cass Community Center.

Freshmen Focus on Youth Hunger World History & Geography students invited Brittney Lilly from Focus:HOPE and Cathy and Norm Schmitt from Gleaners Food Bank to learn about their work for the hungry in our community.

Students prepared a video presenting the statistics of child hunger in Detroit. Students created and completed two fundraisers to raise money for the organizations through a chicken dinner and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Baking Bulldogs give 100% For the Christmas holiday, the World History & Geography students baked 50 dozen Christmas cookies and the Debate Team baked stromboli for the Cass Corridor homeless.

Students also distributed 100 blankets, 100 pairs of socks, 100 hats and gloves, as well as 100 personal items to the Cass Corridor homeless on Christmas day.

Meals on Wheels from Men for Others Seven Bulldogs and their faithful leader arose early on a cold, Thanksgiving morning to deliver food to more than twenty senior citizens.

Working with Meals on Wheels, our students delivered boxes of hot meals and cold side dishes before the turkeys went in the oven around town.

With smiles on their faces and warmth in their heart, these Men for Others made a difference by ensuring that some of the city’s hungry would have several nice meals in the days ahead.

Super Service to Piquette Center Veterans Senior English students prepared and served a meal for the veterans at the Piquette Center. They then invited the veterans to share their stories and experiences – a great opportunity to learn “life lessons.” The veterans received journals to record poetry and letters that the students will publish in February.

Writing Letters World History & Geography students, as well as Senior English students, wrote letters of appreciation before Christmas to “First Responders” of the police and fire departments to thank them for their dedication to the community.

Running for Special Olympics Braving the cold, four students and Ms. Gross ran the New Years Eve Family Fun Run on Belle Isle to raise money for Special Olympics. Way to go and go and go!

DEBATE Well into another exciting season, the debate team has won trophies and speaker medals in the local Wright Dickinson Law Firm Debate, Detroit Urban Debate League (DUDL), as well as a multiple state tournament at Groves High School. As the team grows and develops in its third year, more engagements await including the Michigan State Spartan Classic, the Middletown (OH) Winter Classic, the Junior Varsity State competition, the Grand Valley State University Tournament, and the granddaddy of them all, the Harvard Tournament.

This year, the team will broaden its opportunity for success by not only competing in policy debate, where they have found great success, but also in extemporaneous debate. The team members include seniors Matthew Creer and Anthony Ward; juniors Jordan Officer, Demitrius Heard, Steven Lewis, Malik Burch, and Javon Williams; sophomores Travis McClendon, Jordan Bland, Mac-Rufus Umeokolo, Marcus Williams, Jakobi Lundy-Bass, and Ian McNeal; freshmen Clayborn Allen, Jalen McCrary and Okwioloso Umeokolo. Each one of them has contributed to the awards from every competition.

Recently, alums Kwaishon Bell and Victor Houze (2011 DUDL Champions) returned to judge the last DUDL tournament as volunteers for the league – what a great gift to the team.

In addition to tournament competition, team members showcased their talents against a team from Renaissance High School as part of the Michigan Organizing Collaborative.

Juniors Javon Williams, Jordan Officer, and Steven Lewis all presented public debates on Proposal 1 prior to the November election.

Loyola takes great pride in the debaters – they work long and hard for the trophies and medals they earn. None of this would happen without Ms. Kathy Gross, their coach, who puts in an incredible amount of time familiarizing herself with the materials, coaching the debaters, holding their hands, and transporting them to and from all debates, many times getting home in the wee hours of the morning after driving all over the city. Fortunately, she now has an assistant, Ms. Karen Hickman (Student Resource teacher), who also puts in untold hours providing our students with this wonderful, skill-building opportunity outside the classroom.

FR. MALCOLM CARRON SCHOLARSHIP DINNER

A Celebration of the past and a Look to the Future

The Fr. Malcolm Carron Scholarship Dinner truly was a celebration in this the 20th year for Loyola. Our loyal supporters, students, and staff gathered on Thursday, October 18, at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. A liturgy in the main chapel began the evening, with our new president, Fr. Mark, presiding. He was assisted by Jesuits Greg Hyde, Karl Kiser, Si Hendry, David Mastrangelo, and our first principal Ken Styles. Peggy Bartz once again performed lyrical magic with our ad hoc student choir. The gathering fell on the feast of St. Luke, and the psalm response really fit the event: “Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.”

Following the Mass, nearly 200 guests, staff, and students made their way into the festively decorated gymnasium for a social and dinner. The group of supporters included those quite familiar with Loyola, those who have been part of our community for many years, as well as some newcomers, including the parents and godparents of Fr. Mark. The guests raved about the true gem of Loyola: our young men.

Ann Thomas, Chair of the newly-formed Marketing Committee, spoke about the importance of getting the word out about the great things going on at Loyola. Following these remarks, Juniors Steven Lewis and Jalen Flewellen presented the Magis Award to Dr. Jesse Goodwin, long-time board member and friend of Loyola since its inception.

Alums Jonathon Clark ’97 and Wyatt Jones III ’98 provided a lively introduction for our keynote speaker, their former teacher, Fr. David Honoree Dr. Jesse Goodwin humbly Mastrangelo, S.J. Fr. Dave offered a look shares his appreciation and love for back over the twenty-year history of the Loyola school. In gratitude for his many years of service to Loyola and his deep love and care for students, staff, and benefactors alike, he was presented with a plaque that re-names the scholarship dinner as the Carron-Mastrangelo Legacy Dinner. Our beloved Fr. O’Reilly closed the evening by belting out the final benediction with his rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” We hope you will join us next year to honor Fr. Carron, Fr. Dave, and our young men.

Here at Loyola, we have enhanced our relationship with the Commonweal Foundation of Maryland and the Archdiocese of Detroit to support our work and to improve student learning and our performance as educators.

Loyola welcomes new Board members

Through a change grant received two years ago, the Commonweal Foundation enhances the work done by our teachers and staff. With a four-year Continuing School Improvement plan underway, Loyola receives significant funding to achieve our rigorous objectives. Our core team identified three major goals: Goal 1: Develop academic confidence for greater academic success Goal 2: Improve instruction for greater academic success, for a higher retention rate, and for further opportunities as 21st Century learners Goal 3: Educate the whole self (students)

The Archdiocese has retained the services of Massenburg and Associates, Farmington Hills, to provide Special Education services for those young men in need of additional assistance. These services include programs such as a social work services, mental health special services, testing and evaluations, speech and language assistance, and other resources. Students benefit greatly from the on-site assistance.

Dr. Ring coordinated a Saturday workshop in which several faculty learned how to use I-Pad applications, Apple TV, the I-Mac Notebook, and LCD projectors. All of the new technology was given to the school for educational use. Dr. Ring facilitated feedback sessions on teacher-to-teacher observations using the new technology and on processing testing scores to better understand how best to educate our young men.

Loyola remains committed to improving teaching and learning. We will continue to work through our current relationships and seek new opportunities for improvement both for our students and our staff.

ALUMNI Brandon Johnson-Baldwin ’07 transferred from Schoolcraft to Notre Dame College (OH), where he is on a full athletic scholarship to play Division 2 football for the Falcons beginning in the fall. He attended Schoolcraft College parttime and performed a year of service for City Year before taking this next big step – good luck!

David Benson ’01 earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Saginaw Valley State University and a master’s degree in Public Relations from Wayne State University. David currently resides in Dallas, TX, where he is an Academic Advisor for Grand Canyon University.

Jamar Ragland ’09 is on a full athletic scholarship at Wayne State University.

Following a red-shirt year, he currently ranks third on the team in rebounding for the season. Carrying a 3.5 GPA, Jamar is majoring in Kinesiology/Exercise Science with plans to become a physical therapist. Let’s get out and root for him!

Demetrius Ely ’04 attended John Carroll University, where he majored in business. Since 2008, Demetrius has been working as a Union Rep for the UAW local 909. He and his wife LaToya have one son and reside in Warren, MI. Send pictures!

Jevon Tinsley ’09 is a junior at Oakland University, where he majors in Sociology. This past summer, Jevon happily worked as an intern in the Disney College Program at Disney World in Orlando. TEN YEARS OF LWEP Celebrating its 10th year of providing a vibrant student work force to the Metro Detroit area, the Loyola Work Experience Program (LWEP) forms a vital part of the Loyola High School student formation. Junior and senior students gain valuable people skills and job experience that augments what faculty members teach in the classroom to enhance the overall learning environment of our school.

New Companies Find Value in the Work Experience Program This year the Loyola Work Experience Program added two new sponsors to its list of committed employers. The UAW–Ford National Programs Center, located next to Cobo Hall in the former Veterans Memorial Building, joined the Loyola sponsors through the efforts of Marty Mulloy, Vice President of Labor Affairs, Ford Motor Company, and a current member of the Loyola High School Board. Consisting of the UAW International Staff, Ford Human Resources Staff, and the National Program Center employees, a total of 179 employees work at the facility. Looks like lots of good mentoring opportunities for our young men!

Terry Barr Sales, LLC, located in Southfield also joined the LWEP sponsors. Originally founded in the 1950's by John Murtagh, the company was later incorporated as J.E. Murtagh Associates, Inc. After retiring from a football career with the Detroit Lions, and having worked parttime with John Murtagh in the off-season, Terry Barr joined the company full-time in 1965.

He purchased the business in 1971 and renamed it Terry Barr Sales Agency, Inc. It now operates under the name of Terry Barr Sales and has grown to become one the largest and most experienced automotive manufacturer's representative firms. Thanks especially to the younger Terry Barr, who made the connection with Fr. Mark, a classmate while at Georgetown University.

2012 Bulldogs Make History – Play in State Championship Game The best football season in the history of the school included bringing home the CD Catholic Championship, the Catholic League Prep Bowl Championship, and District and Regional Championships.

The Bulldogs brought a 13-0 record to Ford Field for the State Championship. The hard-fought game ended in a 20-14 loss to the Ishpeming Hemitites from the Upper Peninsula. In the closing minutes, deep in Ishpeming territory, Loyola missed its chance at a first down. Then Ishpeming gambled on a fourth down and was successful, giving them the field position needed to protect the win. Eight yards from glory, the Bulldogs could not punch it in for a score.

In spite of the heartbreaking loss that brought a good measure of tears, our players and coaching staff demonstrated praiseworthy sportsmanship. A number of individuals from the Ishpeming community sent communications expressing admiration for the “first-class character” demonstrated by Loyola coaches and players throughout the game and at the end. We were especially proud of our young men for the way they conducted themselves after a tough loss in the biggest game of their lives.

Congratulations to all our players for their outstanding efforts, excellent teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the season.

BULLDOG BYTES Merry Christmas, Loyola students! The Parent Club provided a magnificent luncheon for our young men on the last day of school before break.

They transformed the cafeteria into a beautiful, holiday dining room with red and green tablecloths, Christmas decorations, and a tree with a beautifully wrapped gift for every student underneath. The guys filled up on chicken, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, green beans, potatoes, salad, cake, cookies, pie – all the foods they love. What a wonderful way to show our young men how much they are loved!

Thanks to a generous donation from Larry and Crystal Davidson, all House members received striped ties during a kick-off ceremony on Monday, January 7th. The stripes reflect the colors in each of the House shields. The young men look very sharp in their new ties, which have quickly become prized possessions.

Victory for the Bulldogs! Congratulations to Joseph Webb ‘16, Jalen McCrary ‘16, Anthony Ward ‘13, Matthew Creer ‘13, Javon Williams ‘14, Blaine Woodland ‘16, and Travis McClendon ‘14 for winning the Red Wings S.H.O.T.S. (Students Helping Others Through Service) program for November. Dr. Darius (FM 107.5) interviewed the young men on his show on Monday, December 17th. For the second time in two years, Ms. Kathy Gross helped her students win this honor.

Robert Huth, Macomb County Municipal Attorney, became acquainted with Loyola through the 2010 NFL video clip about our school and wanted to help in some way.

And help he did! For the past two years, he and his family have prepared and served pre-game meals for our varsity players before every game. In addition, they provided all the food for our last two season-ending football banquets. Talk about being a “man for others!

The Commonweal Foundation held a Leadership Forum attended by Fr. Mark, Wyatt Jones, Joe Kidder, Karen Hickman, and Melissa Thatcher. Commonweal provides funds to Loyola through the Pathways program for student scholarships and through the Continuing School Improvement grant that brought us Scott Humphrey, Assistant Principal. The staff brought back an idea for a new “House” system to promote brotherhood as well as academic excellence and best behavior. Read on…

Loyola instituted a new “House” system on the first day back from Christmas break. Every day, each student attends his Study Hall period in a specific “House.” The houses compete with each other based on a point system for academic excellence and best behavior.

Each “House” has a shield that proudly bears the name of a former president or of the first principal of Loyola High School.

Which house will you root for: the House of Carron, the House of O’Reilly, the House of Evans, the House of Mastrangelo, or the House of Styles? Look for the new ties to help you decide.

LANDMARK • WINTER 2013

Two experienced wrestlers joined the Bulldogs this year: Alan Taylor ‘14 and Patrick Harbin ‘15. Thanks to Joe Kidder, our LWEP Director and Head Wrestling Coach at U of D Jesuit, these young men compete for Loyola while training at our brother school. With a few more wrestlers and some timely donations, Loyola might have another sports team next year.

The Loyola Student Senate has been busy this fall. Members planned their third annual Spirit Week competition to support our winning football team. The seniors came away victorious (again) winning several events. The sophomores came in a close second, with the juniors placing third, and the freshman left to hope for better things next year.

In recognition of being a state finalist, the varsity football team was rewarded with a trip to Lansing, where the Bulldogs received a special tribute signed by State Representative Thomas F. Stallworth III and State Senator Virgil Smith.

Rep. Stallworth visited Loyola in December. The guys (and chaperones Wyatt Jones III and Marion Tate) had a great time visiting the legislature and touring the capital.

Proving that there are lots of ways to support our young men, the McNish Foundation once again donated funds so that our young men can participate in the prestigious Harvard Debate Tournament. Some of the debate team members also receive scholarships from the McNish Foundation.
