Loyola High School of Detroit, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, nurtures a culture of hope and academic success for young men challenged by an urban environment and prepares them to be men of Christian love, justice, and service who act with integrity, compassion, and courage.

As the pictures on the cover reveal, excitement fills the campus of Loyola High School. From our new students to a new school year (our twenty-second year!), from our weight loft to our faculty lounge, from new faces to new programming for our students, newness affords all members of the Loyola community the promise of success as classes began again this fall.

This edition of Landmark focuses on new beginnings, appreciating what has made Loyola a special place over the years, understanding what we have and what we can do better, and communicating more effectively Rev. Mark W. Luedtke, S.J. who we are and what we are about here at the corner of Fenkell and Pinehurst. All beginnings imply a certain newness, but our progress this year, in the spirit of the magis (a Latin word meaning more or better, richer, fuller), has been built upon using our resources better, renewing spaces to make them more useful, and looking to new relationships to serve our students and support our staff more robustly.

As we look to the future, we have engaged an architect to sketch a master plan to help Loyola take solid steps into the future. We have partnered with agencies and LWEP sponsors to offset the rising costs of educating young people. And, we have worked hard to appreciate the needs of our families and our community to use our resources in the service of others.

All in all, we have focused on how we continue to support the mission of the school – to educate young men who have struggled in their education prior to high school, yet desire to do better both inside and outside the classroom. Our students deserve the best we have to offer as they themselves look to their new beginnings this year. Thanks for all that you can do in support of what we do.

On the cover: Loyola once again was the beneficiary of a summer grant that allowed us to have ten students working on campus to clean up and beautify the school. Through their efforts, we filled more than three dumpster loads of the "old" that allowed us to make way for the new. Come see the progress!

Left to Right: • Improvements in our cafeteria kitchen were needed to enter into a relationship with the Office of School Nutrition, our new providers of hot meals to the students at breakfast and lunch. This first phase of our cafeteria renovation gives the students a solid foundation for the school day.

• A donation from UAW - Ford provided the labor and the resources to renovate our faculty lounge and workroom. Work will soon be completed affording the staff a place of respite during the day in the lounge, and a space to plan and collaborate on lesson plans and shared learning experiences.

• The athletic facilities received a wonderful upgrade as well through the UAW - Ford donation.

Tradesmen cleaned, prepped, and painted the spaces our athletes use for weight training. When the spaces were ready, they brought in many new pieces of equipment that provides Loyola with one of the finer workout spaces around. The athletes and coaches are very impressed and very proud of this space - thanks UAW - Ford!

Dear Loyola Friends and Benefactors, Sometimes I think I’m in the smile business. The best smiles we get at Loyola are the result of your efforts, both directly and indirectly: the glow on a student’s face when he understands the idea a teacher has presented, the gleeful smile a student athlete has when he accomplishes his goal or the team wins the game, the feel-good smiles of a group of students returning from a service project knowing they helped someone, and the I-did-it smile of accomplishment at graduation as a student receives his diploma.

According to the U.S. Post Office over 40 million people move every year and not everyone lets the Post Office know their new address.

Over the years, Loyola has lost track of some of its alumni and we feel it’s important to stay in touch and connected. We’d like to let them know how the school is doing, share news about their fellow classmates, and encourage them to support Loyola’s current students through attendance at athletic events, Career Day, and graduation.

Does What I Am and Who I Am Matter?

Yes, of Course It Does!

During one of my child psychology classes in my undergraduate studies, I learned about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The man was a genius! He created a pyramid of human basic needs which starts with the most organic and builds to most mature level --beginning with the physiological DeLisa Jones and ending with self-actualization. Now I’m oversimplifying it a bit, but the bottom of the pyramid (physiological) represents our primal needs–air, shelter, water, food, sleep and sex.

What is Shared Time Teaching?

This school year, Loyola High School has entered into a shared time teaching agreement with Clarkston Community Schools. This agreement will benefit both schools financially, while having little to no impact on the day-to-day operations of Loyola.

State aid guidelines have provided for shared time since 1985, when the Michigan Supreme Court rendered a decision in support of shared time programming. From its origins, shared time teaching provided additional classes outside of the core courses (Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) in non-public schools. This agreement will assist Loyola in expanding its program while maintaining a balanced budget.

Key points: • All Loyola students remain Loyola students.

• All classroom rules, school rules, school discipline, curriculum, etc. will remain the responsibility of Loyola.

• Clarkston Community Schools claims Loyola students for State funding and uses 50% of that funding to pay the teachers and buy supplies for shared time classes.

• Loyola teachers participating in the shared time teaching program remain employees of Loyola, and they will follow the policies and procedures of Loyola, especially regarding the Catholic and Jesuit identity of Loyola.

• Loyola sets salaries and compensation for its teachers.

• Loyola benefits by being able to provide a more robust curriculum for its students.

• Loyola benefits by being able to offset the rising costs of insurance, healthcare, and operating expenses.

Clarkston Community Schools extends its gratitude to Loyola for partnering with them and looks forward to a fantastic school year for staff and students alike at Loyola High School.

spontaneity. Somewhere between our most basic needs and our more sophisticated, mature needs are the stages of needs of our students. For a school like Loyola, it is our responsibility to support the development of our students’ psychological needs and safeguard these in-between-of stages of life. We are tasked with ensuring the healthy development and growth of these in-between-needs: safety and security, social needs (friendships and family) and esteem (self-esteem, confidence, and achievement).

Why am I offering this to you? Knowing all of this helps one to understand the basis of our daily work and care for our students. A very mature senior trying to grow up and make sense of life, once asked me: “Does what I am and who I am matter?” If I remember correctly, I emphatically answered “Yes!” You see, everyone of our young men matters, and who they are and who they are becoming is essential to forming our work with our students. It is our mission to ensure that everything from our food program, to our instructional programs, to our extra-curricular programs, to our work-study program, and to, of course, our religious programs, positively and deeply connects to our students and produces a level of success that will make them proud of their achievements while providing the foundation needed to live well and productively.

I’ve always taken education seriously; I am honored to work with others who feel the same. Our faculty and staff provide for our students the care, concern, and dedication that it takes to give our young men a superb high school experience. Our alums often come back and remark on their appreciation of all that Loyola had done for them. It is our tradition to care about who our students are and who they will become.

Yearly, we meet as a faculty and staff and administrative team to discuss and make positive improvements to our safety procedures, upgrade our technology, plan for and implement building renovations, schedule social activities and school events, update our curriculum and instructional methods, as well as come up with new ways to motivate, encourage and celebrate our students achievements. All the while, we invite our families, donors, and community members to work with us on our efforts. We all have our students’ best interest in mind because we know who they are and what they are does matter. It matters, to God, their families, our communities, our world, and of course to them.

Therefore, as we move into this new school year filled with inspiration, excitement, and high expectations, we will keep the most basic human needs in mind as we prepare the young men of Loyola for an outstanding year of learning and growing together.

Summer Mission trip

Another Summer Experience for our Bulldogs Loyola students Demitrius Heard, Mac-Rufus Umeokolo, Walter Adams, Cortez Franklin, Ricardo Murry, Joseph Webb, Christopher Turner, Gregory Hudgens, and Donovan Stanberry, joined Ms. Gross (English and Geography teacher) and Mr. Clark (Assistant LWEP Director) on a Summer Mission Trip to Habitat for Humanity in Manistique, Michigan. Funded by the Commonweal Foundation, the Loyola volunteers repaired and improved facilities for families throughout the community learning new skills and exploring Michigan’s upper peninsula.

Chris Turner ’17 had this to say about the trip: “This mission trip experience really opened my eyes because I finally saw how good it is to help others.”

Donovan Stanberry ‘17 agreed with Chris: “It was a life changing experience. I learned to paint and provided a better appearance for the community while exploring new parts of Michigan.”

The Loyola team received a warm welcome.

Mac-Rufus Umeokolo ’15 found the trip very rewarding: “We provided more living space for the poor people in the community and reduced the number of abandoned buildings by repairing them and improving their appearance. I learned how to remodel a home, and it impacted my life through the lessons I learned and the people I met.”

Demitrius Heard ’14 shared Mac-Rufus’s feelings: “I feel that the mission trip will advance the community because it helps those who need it and creates a story for the volunteers to tell. That story is what will make other people join in on the project and provide further help for the community.”

Cortez Franklin ’15 concurred: “I enjoy working hard and seeing progress in a community. Helping families enjoy their own space and feeling good in their neighborhood benefits everyone as a whole. I am not a handy man and did not know how to use many tools, but learned to paint well and the meaning of patience.”

Our graduation ceremonies once again sent our young men into the world beyond Loyola, diplomas in hand, ready to engage the next step on their journeys as life-long learners. Our two-fold graduation celebration—the graduation Mass, held in the Loyola High School Chapel on June 4, and the graduation ceremony, held in St. Peter Claver Church on June 5—also sent the young men off with some new traditions Fr. Mark celebrates the Mass. and some new Loyola trinkets: dog tags and t-shirts. At a breakfast gathering before graduation practice, several alums gathered with the graduates to share food and camaraderie and a little of life’s wisdom. Alum Donald Rudd ‘10 spoke to the graduates and encouraged them to draw on their Loyola experiences as they go out into the world.

The graduation Mass marked the last time that the Class of 2014 would pray together, as they did every day at Loyola. Graduates, families, friends, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of these young men before looking to the future. Fr. Mark Luedtke, S.J., President , celebrated the Mass with the students reading the scriptures, petitions, and the Loyola High School Prayer, which has been read every school day at Morning Prayer since the school opened. Pianist Peggy Bartz and vocalist Adia Dobbins (daughter of Loyola faculty member Karen Hickman) provided beautiful, uplifting music that made it easy to get into a prayerful and celebratory mood.

In his homily, Fr. Mark talked to the almost-graduates about how they were brought together as Bulldogs and how they did their part to build up the foundation for future Bulldogs – For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land (Ezekiel 36:22-28). They have come together as Bulldogs for Life and bonded together as a class. Fr. Mark reminded them that while they did not always make it easy, the staff have loved them every day – So that they may be one just as we are one (John 17:21) – and that they should go forth and be “men for others” – As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world (John 17:18).Fr. Mark kept up his tradition of sharing personal comments about each of them (many worrying about what he would say next). The evening culminated with a scrumptious meal served by the junior class and their parents in the Gathering Space.

On the big day, St. Peter Claver, a good-sized church (formerly Precious Blood), was filled to capacity with proud, enthusiastic families, friends, faculty and staff, and, of course, our soon-to-be alumni – the foundation for the future. All of the young men who finished junior year together made it all the way to the graduation stage – together – a great class accomplishment.

Graduation speaker Tyree Guyton, an urban environmental artist known for his work on the Heidelberg Project, held up his artistic clock and prompted the graduates with the question: What time is it? Initially caught off guard, by the end of his speech, the graduates gave a hearty response: “Our time!”

Indeed, as this class of Bulldogs heads off to college and other vocational opportunities, it is their time to leave their mark on the world – Best wishes!

Loyola & the Tigers

Tigers Event: Fun And Successful!

Despite Mother Nature’s huffing and puffing, the sun shined brightly on Loyola High School’s 18th Annual Tigers Fundraiser. Over 800 Loyola friends, old and new, joined staff and students at the newly remodeled Detroit Athletic Club Pavilion on Friday, June 13, 2014, for a rousing pre-game party.

Guests had a chance to bid on over 72 items during the Silent Auction. There was something for everything including golf with Fr. Luedtke at Oakland Hills, vacation getaways to Hilton Head, Fr. Mark warms up the crowd. Florida and Vermillion, Ohio, restaurant certificates, Tiger Suites, wine, sports memorabilia, Pewabic Pottery tour, football, hockey and baseball tickets, and a very unique rocking Vegetabull. Spirited bidding certainly added to the festive mood and the overall success of the event.

The DAC did a terrific job once again as guests enjoyed the burgers, dogs, and other savory cookout items along with their favorite beverages. Paws, all decked out in his Polish garb, added to the fun delighting both young and old Bulldog/Tiger fans.

New this year was the Coin Toss. Participants purchased a special Loyola coin, and the crowd cheered on the participants as Fr. Luedtke called out, “Heads” or “Tails.” With each round, the participants were winnowed down to two finalists. Joe Cornillie was the last person standing and the winner of the Apple Ipad.

After warming up the crowd with the Coin Toss, Fr. Luedtke moved on to the Scholarship Auction. The action was fast and furious and, when the dust settled, Loyola students were the beneficiaries of $7,300 in scholarship aid.

The Tiger Suite Auction was next on the list, and once again the bidding went up quickly with Jim Padilla ending up as the winning bidder.

Students Jacobi Lundy-Bass ’15, Okwuolisa Umeokolo ’16, Ron Secrest ’15, and Anthony Muse ’15 greet guests with their winning smiles.

The Ticket Raffle drawing was the final event of the pre-game party. This year’s Raffle raised over $18,750. Michael Flynn and Crystal Davidson were lucky winners, and James Banyai was the grand prize winner.

Fr. Luedtke thanked Co-Chairs Crystal Davidson, Mike Madison, Mike Nolan, Matt Shell and Mark Van Faussien and the other members of the Tigers Committee, along with the DAC and the Tigers Organization, for their hard work and support. The crowd then made its way across the street to Comerica Park to watch the Tigers take on the Twins.

The event was once again a huge success thanks to all those who participated. Plans are already under way for next year—we hope you will join us and bring a friend!

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Summer Enrichment 2014 a Smashing Success Once again the crop of incoming freshmen at Loyola took a great step toward a successful school year.

Thanks to Summer Enrichment 2014, funded by the Commonweal Foundation and coordinated by Ms. Karen Hickman, resource teacher, the 28 students were very engaged, working hard in the classroom, playing hard in the Wayne State University gym, and learning a lot about themselves.

With the help of 10 peer tutors, up from 6 last year, we were able to extend the Wayne State University Ropes Course training to all freshmen enrichment students.

Tutors, who had undergone the ropes program just two weeks prior, were extremely helpful assistant facilitators of all the activities, which gave them the chance to bond with the freshmen even more. The students displayed confidence in themselves when they stepped out of their comfort zones to try something they never thought they would do. It was personally rewarding for all who experienced it.

Lots of challenges to overcome

The students experienced team building through a problem solving game challenging them to figure out how to utilize each member of a four-member team to retrieve a pencil from the middle of the floor when none of them could use their feet, was fun to watch. Bragging rights went to the first team to complete the task.

Another activity called “The Mafia” directed students to focus on the consequences of assumptions, rumors and going with the “status quo” as they problem-solved through a series of strange occurrences. Dean Wyatt Jones, who helped chaperone the group, said, “I really like how this activity gets to what’s so wrong about accusations and making Good coaching and tutoring led to some assumptions about others great achievements. without solid facts or credible information. I think I’ll use it at football practice tonight.”

By the time students got to climbing the High Ropes in the afternoon they were a well-seasoned group who cheered each other on and exhibited patience, encouragement, and support even for those who could not make it to the top.

This program is a tremendous way to build team spirit, leadership, and problem solving skills. It helps provide some valuable insight into how we individually resolve conflict, critically think through solutions, and interact with others when we’re outside of our own zones of comfort.

Pathways to Success

Pathways Students Get a Taste of College This past summer, nineteen Pathways to Success students traveled to various campuses across the country to participate in Pre-College Summer Programming funded by the Commonweal Foundation.

Each student had the opportunity to get a taste of college life for a week or two. Four freshman made the trip to the University of Virginia, seven sophomores and two juniors flew to UCLA, two juniors and one senior went to UCSD. One freshman attended the Envision Medical Careers Seminar in The entire UCSD summer family! State academic computer camp, and one senior was able to attend a 4-week bridge program at his intended school of study, Texas Southern University. A great variety of opportunities to be sure.

The students experienced what it was like to attend college classes. They also spent time sightseeing and going on fun field trips. As evidenced by the student reflections and photos, these students fully intend to take advantage of this opportunity again next summer!

Terry Harris ’17: My trip to Chicago was one of the best experiences of my life. The med camp by Envisions gave me a real-world understanding of college and medical school. There I made new friends, which allowed me to open up and express myself more. I was also introduced to the challenges that med students face daily. This opportunity made me even more certain that I want to go into the medical field when I graduate from Loyola. We went to seminars, classes, and field trips. We learned how to suture and check vitals.

We also explored dissected cadavers. It was overall a wonderful experience, and I would like to thank Pathways and the Commonweal Foundation for funding my trip, along with everyone else behind the scenes that made it possible for me to take this trip.

Richard Gold ’14: I got to spend one week at UCSD and one week at UCLA. I had a really good time doing all of the events planned every day. The dorms were beautiful and the food was good. The atmosphere of the whole surroundings was just breathtaking. I got really lucky because the staff at UCLA let me take a few days to visit my aunt and grandma, whom I hadn’t seen since I was 5!

My two weeks with the Blueprint program just showed me that there are lots of priorities and responsibilities to take care of once you get to college. It is WAY different than high school! We didn’t really have homework, but it was my responsibility to get up every day and make it to class by 9 a.m. That’s pretty different from mom coming in and waking me up every day. I had a cinema class at UCLA and that was great—we learned to edit and cut movies. All in all I loved it. I wish I could go back!

Michael Tyson Joins Loyola Board Loyola High School welcomes Michael Tyson as its newest Board member.

Michael’s career path is marked by more than 20 years of demonstrated success in the financial sector. Michael is now President and CEO of NEW, which focuses on delivering quality products and services to the nonprofit community. Before joining NEW, Michael held several executive level positions with J.P. Morgan Chase, where he directed strategic planning, budget management, and the sales and service activities of more than 2,000 employees in Southeast Michigan financial centers. He also directed the national policy, risk, and compliance activities of ATM operations in Dallas, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Phoenix and served as the CEO of a residential building company in the city of Detroit for 12 years.

Michael is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and was awarded a fellowship to Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management. Michael has held leadership positions with several nonprofit boards including the Detroit Advisory Board of the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Warren Conner Development Coalition, The Parade Company, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, and the Jewish Fund.

Aaron Fields is our new ACT Prep instructor.

He is a ’06 graduate of U of D Jesuit. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Wright State University. He then spent two years in the Cleveland Indians organization after which he worked as a baseball scout and ran a baseball instruction business. Since October of 2013 Aaron has been employed by Optiminds, a company which specializes in ACT prep, tutoring and brain training. Aaron is looking forward to giving Loyola students the tools they need to improve their ACT scores and get into the college of their choice.

Pam Oejniczak is our new English teacher. She is a graduate of Rochester Adams High School.

She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Central Michigan University and her Master’s Degree from Saginaw Valley State University. This is Pam’s 19th year of teaching, 11 in Michigan and seven in North Carolina. Last year she taught at U of D Jesuit where she learned about the Jesuit way of proceeding. The motto of “Men for Others” and the magis are important to Pam, and she looks forward to making a difference at Loyola.

Kim Rakestraw is our new math teacher. She graduated from Osborne High School in Detroit.

Kim obtained a B.S. in Finance from UDM and a Master’s Degree in Education and Math from Marygrove College. She was employed for six years with Catapult Learning, spending the last two years at Loyola. Kim loves the mission of Loyola, and wants to help her students have a better understanding and love of math. She feels that teaching is a job where you give back every day, and is very excited to be starting a new chapter at Loyola as a math teacher.

Alycia Schoof is our new Spanish teacher. She attended West Bloomfield High School, then went on to the University of Michigan in the Honors College where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Spanish. Alycia received her Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Education from Wayne State University.

She also attended the Naturopathic School of the Healing Arts in Ann Arbor. Alycia is very grateful for the opportunity to work with such small groups of students and to be able to use creativity as an approach to learning.

Alumni Update

Tyrone Finnie ’97 lives in Detroit. For the last fourteen years, Ty has been working as an automotive worker on the Chrysler assembly line at the Jefferson plant. Having been a star basketball player for the Bulldogs, Tyrone enjoys playing pick up basketball in his spare time.

Edward Owens ’02 has been serving in the United States Marine Corps since 2007. He has been deployed twice, once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan.

Edward is now stationed in San Diego, where he lives with his wife and son.

Kevin Johnson-Durant ’09 is currently residing in Pontiac, MI, where he works as a car salesman at Glassman Automotive Group.

Kevin is also enrolled at Oakland Community College and is majoring in Computer Information Technology.

Donald Rudd ’11 earned an Associates Degree in Information Technology from ITT Tech in 2013. He uses his skills and freelances as an IT manager for multiple small businesses in metro Detroit. Donald also works for Chrysler on the assembly line at the Warren plant and is working towards his Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology at Wayne State University. Not much free time for Donald!

Stefon Johnson ’11 is a senior at Siena Heights University majoring in Crimnal Justice.

Stefon is a member of the track team and expects to graduate in December. After graduation, Stefon is planning to pursue a career in US Government law enforcement.

Amos Houston ’12 is in his third year of a full athletic scholarship at Eastern Michigan University, where he is majoring in Physical Therapy. He plays strong safety for the Eagles football team and is delighted to be mentoring his new/former teammate Ka’John Armstrong ’14, who is also on a full athletic scholarship.

Michael Harrington ‘03 After only four years of service with the Detroit Police Department, Michael Harrington was selected Officer of the Year 2013 for District 4.

Following are excerpts from the Official Publication of the Detroit Police Officers Association: Officer Michael Harrington has already proved a valuable asset to his District and the 12th Precinct thanks to developing himself combined with an intrinsic skill at his job. Nominated for his character, demeanor toward the citizen, humbleness, and work ethics, he won the Officer of the Month in August 2012, but continued to work on his skills to become a proficient report writer while performing at a top level for his 12-hour shifts. His patience and keen eye are making the city a safer place.

Harrington is undeterred by dangerous circumstances, and his sense of what is happening and how to react rationally and calmly assures that he keeps not only himself and his partner safe, but also the public. His work with the Department is exemplary for his pursuit of justice and his ability to quickly assess a situation to assure that he protects everyone who does not deserve to be in the way of harm.

Loyola Work Experience program (LWEP)

Work Experience Seminar Week During the first two weeks of August, summer came to an abrupt end for our LWEP Juniors.

Summer training was an intense five days of instruction provided by several of our sponsors. The LWEP students and staff would like to thank these sponsor companies for providing excellent speakers and presenters.

Returning presenter Marc Bland Students enjoy on-the-job training at from IHS Automotive spoke Andiamo’s on the Riverfront. about how appearance makes the first impression on people. Also from IHS Automotive was Ms. Shelia Crosby. Her presentation covered appropriate phone skills, taking messages, and why it’s important to give a good impression on the phone. Students then had the opportunity to role play and practice.

Mr. Kidder covered several topics including the importance of appropriate behavior at work because of different types of harassment issues and what it means to have the proper attitude while on the job.

Representatives from Ford Motor Company provided information on personal finances that included banking, credit, credit scores, major purchases, and a number of practical issues that students struggle with upon entering college.

Mr. James Tate, Detroit City Council, presented a section on public speaking. Bodman representative, Nancy Davis, presented an important piece about ethical behavior in the workplace. Ms. Karen Grey from Dykema discussed how accuracy and detail is important on the job.

To cap off the week, students were provided with Etiquette Training. Ms. Elise Edwards from G.U. T. S. spoke to students about manners, table settings at restaurants, and some important things to remember while out in the public eye. Students then put their etiquette training into practice with lunch at Andiamo’s on the Riverfront.

Debate Team has another Successful Year The Loyola Debate Team concluded its fourth year with Mac-Rufus Umeokolo ‘15 and his brother Okwuolisa ‘16 winning seven rounds of the Detroit Urban Debate League Novice Championship, and Christopher Turner ‘17 winning a top speaker award.

Travis McClendon ‘15 and Jordan Bland’15 attended the Hoosier Debate Camp at Indiana University this past summer, and Jakobi Lundy-Bass ‘15, attended Xylum Debate Camp at the University of Iowa.

Once again, Loyola’s Debate Team was invited to Yale’s National Tournament in September with the trip being funded through the generosity of the McNish Foundation. Additionally, The debaters jump for joy after a successful season. thanks to the McNish Foundation, the Debate Team was able to join the Catholic Forensic League and participate in Public Forum Debate this past year.

We bid a fond farewell to two of our top debaters, Demitrius Heard ‘14 and Jordan Officer ‘14, both of whom have begun their studies at Michigan State University. They have promised to keep in touch and cheer us on as we begin a new year.

IN MEMORIAM With deep sadness, Loyola announced the passing of Fr. Michael A. Evans, S.J., past president of Loyola High School. Fr. Evans died on Monday, September 1, 2014.

Fr. O’Reilly celebrates 70 years as a Jesuit!

On June 22, 2014, many friends and relatives of Fr. Jim O’Reilly, S.J., gathered at St. Peter Claver Catholic Community to joyfully celebrate his 70th Jubilee as a Jesuit. Mass was followed by a delicious lunch (Fr. O had requested that hot dogs and macaroni be served, but was outvoted by the planning committee).

Born June 12, 1926, in Toledo, OH, Fr. O’Reilly entered the Jesuits on June 10, 1944. He was ordained a priest June 19, 1957. Fr. O’s many years of service include ministries as teacher, counselor, coach, administrator, pastor, and spiritual director. Currently 88 years young, Fr. O is a Loyola counselor and Pastor of St. Peter Claver Catholic Community. Here at Loyola we describe him as “saint” and “Energizer Bunny”—he just keeps on going, leaving behind a trail of good works.

A few years back, when one of our young Jesuit volunteers was asked if he knew where Fr. O’Reilly was, he quickly replied, “Wherever there is injustice.” That’s a fitting description of our Fr. O! May he continue to serve, in his humble way, for many years to come.

Dear Friends of Loyola, On August 12, I had the privilege of presiding at a special funeral Mass with my family and friends. About a dozen of my Jesuit brothers, along with a longtime diocesan priest-friend (who helped keep the Jesuits in line), joined me around the altar. The occasion was the “homegoing” of Dovelia “Dee” Mastrangelo, mother of my brother, Bob, sister, Diane, and me. After suffering for many years from dementia, which basically took her out of our common world into her own, she passed away, loved and at peace, just 2 months shy of her 90th birthday. (Amazing fact: all 5 of her bridesmaids—average age the same—were present!)

At the Mass we heard these words from the Book of Wisdom, which seemed written with Mom in mind: “Those who trust in God shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.”

Fr. Mastrangelo served at Loyola as teacher, principal, and president from 1993-2012 and is now Director of Mission and Jesuit Identity at Christ the King Jesuit College Prep in Chicago.

May God bless Dee, her husband, Joe, and all our loved ones who, as we prayed at Mass, “have gone before us, marked with the sign of faith,” as they experience the eternal joy and the infinite love that awaits us all.

Fr. Evans was born on August 20, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 6, 1975, at Loyola House in Berkley, Michigan and was ordained June 18, 1983.

Before entering the Society, Mike earned Bachelor of Arts Degrees in English and History from the University of Detroit Mercy. Education was a passion for Mike and, after novitiate, he went on to earn a Master's Degree in Philosophy, a Master's of Divinity, a Master's of Theological Studies, a Master's of Arts in International Relations and Development, a Ph.D. in Economic Development and Social Ethics, and a Ph.D. in Economic Development and Social Ethics.

In 1991, Mike became the regional director of Eastern Africa Jesuit Refugee Services in Nairobi from 1991-1996. At the request of the Provincial, he returned to Detroit to serve as president of Loyola High School for the next four years. Accomplishing his mission to get Loyola on a solid financial footing, he then returned to the Eastern Africa Province where he took on the responsibilities of treasurer and development director. Returning to the United States in October 2010, he served as the national director of the USA Jesuit Refugee Service in Washington D.C. until 2012, when he returned home to deal with health issues. Fr. Evans was a blessing for Loyola and truly lived his life as a “man for others.” May he rest in peace.

Track Team Sprints to the Finish The Loyola track team, led by Head Coach Sherman Flake ’97 and Assistant Coach Lawsonja Robinson (alumnus parent), came in 3rd in the Catholic League and Regionals. The Bulldogs had a good chance of finishing first and winning its 3rd Championship, but injuries held them back.

Loyola qualified in ten events for the State meet, with Corey Hewitt ’15 finishing 6th in the 110 High Hurdles. We had a lot of individual champions. With a young nucleus, we hope the entire team returns next year

Loyola Summer Madness If this summer play is any indication of what’s to come, the Loyola Bulldogs should have a great basketball season. The Bulldogs posted a record of 34-8 over the summer, playing against mostly Class A and B teams. The basketball program seems to be building toward great things. Loyola is becoming a powerhouse not only in the Catholic League (3 straight Division titles) but also in the city of the Detroit and statewide, having been ranked #3 most of last season. Coach John “Rocky” Buscemi has been preparing himself for the long hours it takes to get his team ready for the upcoming season. Hours in the newly renovated weight room, personal workouts, and numerous drills are raising hopes for a trip to the Breslin Center for a Class C Championship in March.

Bulldog Bytes Senior Mac-Rufus Umeokolo participated as a student leader in a 3-day Youth Service & Philanthropy Camp this summer at Central Michigan University. Over 500 students and teachers from four states attended the camp and provided services to several organizations. Chosen as a committee member for the year, Mac-Rufus presented simple service projects for students and teachers alike; everyone loved his gregarious personality. The student has become the teacher. Good job, Mac-Rufus!

June graduate Demitrius Heard was selected as a finalist for the State of Michigan Governor’s Service Award. Demitrius performed over 1,500 hours of community service during his four years at Loyola and earned numerous awards and recognitions, including the Catholic Lawyers Essay Contest.

Ms. Kathryn Gross, English and Geography teacher, was invited to be a panelist on the Governor’s Education Summit, where she will present the topic Can Innovation Be Taught?

(The Governor sure is hearing a lot about Loyola.)

Senior Jordan Bland coordinated an urban garden in a vacant lot across the street from Loyola High School. The garden supplied the neighbors with fresh vegetables throughout the summer and fall. The total student population contributed to tilling the soil, planting the seeds and seedlings, and maintaining the garden throughout the season. Extra food was canned for the food pantry. Grants were awarded to Loyola thanks to volunteer Crystal Davidson and teacher Kathryn Gross by the Michigan Non-Profit Association, The League Michigan, Youth Service America, and the Disney Foundation, to fund the equipment and materials needed for the project. Hard work and healthy produce—a good season for all!

The Loyola Chapter of the National Honor Society focused their spring service project on raising money to buy netting for families in Africa. The donation was made to the United Nations Nothing but Nets program. Through a school-wide barbecue, the NHS raised enough money to provide netting for 24 families. Malaria is still the number one killer of children in the world, and this was a very simple but meaningful way to save lives.

Senior Jakobi Lundy-Bass took second place in the statewide Shakespeare competition. Portraying King Lear, Jakobi received overwhelming praise from the judges, along with college scholarship offers for drama. In addition to the award, he was presented with a $400 cash prize to further his studies of Shakespeare. Congratulations to Jakobi for working diligently over spring break and many evenings to perfect his monologue!

This year students will have the opportunity to attend Shakespeare’s Midsummer’s Night’s Dream in Stratford, Ontario due to the generosity of Mrs. Arlene Lewis. As members of Stratford, the Lewis family’s generosity will provide transportation and tickets for Loyola students in October—a wonderful opportunity for our students!

Teacher Kathryn Gross received the League Michigan Teacher of the Year Award for 2014. Based on her commitment to community service Ms. Gross was awarded this honor at the Youth Service & Philanthropy Camp in this past June— recognition well deserved.

Kathryn Gross also received a fellowship from The Henry Ford (THF) this year for designing a curriculum for teachers around the country, which will be implemented through THF. Ms. Gross collaborated and developed programs with seven other teachers selected for this project.

Once again Loyola received a 9/11 Day of Service Grant from the Michigan Community Service Commission, Michigan Non-Profit, and League Michigan to provide support for first responders and active duty U.S. Military. Students and volunteers will prepare apple pies and chocolate chip cookies with letters of appreciation for each of the 47 firehouses and 12 police precincts in the City of Detroit, as well as send letters and homemade Michigan jams to Michigan military in Afghanistan. Ms. Gross’s World History & Geography classes will lead the project, sharing a commitment to make positive history each day.

Ms. Elaine Frazier, Business Manager at Loyola, is a member of the “Grace Riders”, a bike riding club at her church, Greater Grace Temple. In addition to other club-sponsored rides, the Grace Riders participate in the weekly Monday night “Slow Roll,” a massive bike ride centered in downtown Detroit.

Bikers also ride on the third Thursday and the fourth Friday each month. A fun way to exercise!

Fr. Mark Luedtke participated in the bi-province pilgrimmage to the historic sites of St. Ignatius Loyola in Spain and Rome.

Along with fellow Jesuit RJ Fichtinger, Loyola Board member, Fr. Karl Kiser, President of U of D Jesuit, and 30 other educators in Jesuit high schools, the pilgrims gained insight into Ignatius and made valuable connections with others who uphold the Jesuit mission of secondary education.

During the summer, ten Loyola students toiled tirelessly under the firm but affectionate supervision of Roderick Holifield, Loyola Security Officer, to help spiffy up and make better use of the school building and grounds. Filling five dumpsters with broken, retired items, the school now has more storage space and room for a fitness area. Once again, Loyola received a grant to pay their salaries from Growing Detroit’s Young Talent.

David Mastrangelo, S.J., who served Loyola for 19 years Throughout their long careers of serving in Detroit, both Fr. Carron and Fr. Mastrangelo were passionate about helping promising students afford a Catholic education. All proceeds from this evening provide need-based financial assistance for our families.
