Loyola High School of Detroit, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, nurtures a culture of hope and academic success for young men challenged by an urban environment and prepares them to be men of Christian love, justice, and service who act with integrity, compassion, and courage.

As the end of the school year approached, and I prepared for the June Board meeting and my retreat, I was filled with gratitude for all the graces of the school year. Onboarding a new Leadership team, watching them settle in and take ownership of their roles, setting plans for the future, and fine-tuning a five-year Business Plan all reassured me that Loyola was on a solid foundation to build for the future.

As we get further into this new school year, I am grateful for the grace of that foundation.

Wyatt Jones ‘98, our Prinicpal, Bill McGrail, our Director of Advancement, and now Therese Marz, our new Business Manager, provide both me and Loyola with a passionate and skillful leadership team that not only buoyed us through a summer of transition but kept us pointed on a trajectory towards future success for our young men and our school. Our dedicated staff and faculty pulled together and even offered to try new positions to help Loyola get stronger. Who knew that English teacher Kathy Gross was certified in science and excited to work with our upper level science teacher, Dan Geoghagen? Or that Michael Black, our new Dean of Student Formation, would have an immediate impact on both the new and returning students (and staff). The magis – the fuller, the deeper, the richer, the more espoused by St. Ignatius Loyola – invites us to be open to new opportunities and new people to help move the mission of Loyola forward.

We have begun planning for our 25th year by building up the solid foundation of our alumni.

Beginning with a series of special Rev. Mark W. Luedtke, S.J. gatherings, as well as maintaining better contact with them through our Transitions Coordinator, we hope to engage our most valuable resource as mentors and support for future generations of Bulldogs. Advancement Dear Friends, Family, and Alumni of Loyola, As we open the doors for our 24th year this Fall, it’s an excellent opportunity for the Loyola community to pause for a minute, take a step back, and look at where we came from and where we are headed and dwell on some of the remarkable achievements along the way.

I am sure many of you can still remember picking up the phone years ago with Fr. Malcolm Carron on the other end telling you about the wonderful vision he had for Loyola Academy (as we were called in our founding year). As part of my own settling in here, I’ve dug through the archives, particularly from the founding years, which are full of comments, hopes, and aspirations from some of the founding members. Cardinal Maida described Loyola as a school with a “special, more specific vision”. Fr. Joe Daoust, S.J. clarified our founding as “responding to the Jesuit goal of serving the poor and going where the need is greatest.” My personal favorite (and I can faintly hear his voice) was Fr. Carron noting that the “future of Loyola gives me a great thrill.”

I am proud to report the vision that Fr. Carron had for Loyola is not only alive and well 24 years later, it is growing and thriving and would certainly give him more than a thrill.

• For the sixth straight year, 100% of our seniors were accepted into two- and four-colleges, and we are on track to extend that to 7 straight.

• Last year’s graduating class received over $1 million in scholarship awards for the institutions they planned on attending.

• We now boast almost 600 alums who were impacted by their years at Loyola and who have gone on to be “Men for Others” in their communities.

I would argue that out of those worthy accomplishments, perhaps the one that would bring the biggest smile to Fr. Carron’s face would be the almost 600 young men that have graduated from Loyola. I cannot imagine the power of the vision that he had to see Loyola moving from a thought in his mind to what it is today.

Our alums are our greatest proof of success. While we only have our young men for 4 years, our mission and our goal is to “prepare them to be men of Christian love, justice and service, who act with integrity, compassion and courage.” The success of our approach is ultimately proven in how our young men live beyond Loyola.

William (Bill) McGrail The Loyola community could not be more proud of our three alums who have come “full circle” and are now key members of our school administration. Featured on the cover of this edition of Landmark are Wyatt Jones III ‘98 (Principal), Michael Black ‘01 (Dean of Student Formation) and Paul Davis’11 (Director of Admissions). The stories of their journeys are featured in this edition (Page 8). These young men represent the truest fulfillment of Malcolm’s vision: graduation from Loyola, completion of their college degrees, and then back to Loyola to be “Men for Others” to give back, to guide, and mentor our next generation of Bulldogs. I cannot think of a more fitting example of the success of Loyola.

Regardless of how you may have become connected to our cause—whether you were part of the original vanguard of donors who “picked up the phone” when Malcolm called, or had your arm twisted (ever so gently) by Fr. Dave and Kitty Storen, or this is your first time reading our Landmark—know that our history is anchored and our future is bright because of your support. We cherish the ability to impact our young men’s lives and are grateful that you are a part of the Bulldog community.

Thank you for all that you do, and I look forward to continuing to move Loyola forward to great things.

Annual Appeal Hitting the Mail Soon!

Since our founding, Loyola has been committed to accepting every interested and qualified student, regardless of his family’s financial situation. As a result, paid tuition by Loyola families covers approximately 15% of our annual expenses, with the balance being covered by contributions from supporters, sponsors, events and our Work Experience Program. Our Annual Appeal is our single largest source of funding to ensure that we are able to continue to do what we do. Please keep our young men in your thoughts as you plan your giving for the year and know that your contribution is a direct investment in the futures of the young men that we serve.

Graduation!!

Loyola’s 20th Graduation a Joyous Event for All It’s hard to tell who gets more excited about graduation—students, parents, friends, or Loyola faculty and staff. When 100% of the senior class have been accepted into 2- or 4-year colleges, as was the case for the 6th straight year, this was truly a joyous occasion for all.

Fr. Mark offers some final words of encouragement.

In keeping with a tradition that was initiated three years ago, the graduation celebration began with the “Foundation Breakfast.” On June 8, alums joined the soon-to-be graduates for breakfast in our Gathering Space and shared their experiences, imparted words of wisdom, and reminded the young men that they are the foundation for the future of Loyola. That evening the Graduation Mass marked the last time that the Class of 2016 would pray together, as they had done every day since starting at Loyola. President Fr. Mark Luedtke, S.J. celebrated the liturgy with assistance from students who read scriptures, petitions, and the Loyola High School Prayer. In his homily, Fr. Mark kept his tradition alive by sharing personal comments about each of the graduates and an occasion imitation (creating a great deal of suspense among the young men). The evening culminated with a scrumptious meal served by the Junior class and their parents in the Gathering Space, a tradition that began with the first graduating class way back in 1997.

An enthusiastic group gathered the next evening at our new graduation home, the beautiful Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and greeted the graduates with thunderous applause as they proceded down the aisle. Selected by his classmates, Ernest Adams delivered a moving Salutatory Address. Because of his outstanding academic record, Treveon Vaughn was chosen Valedictorian and gave a heartfelt speech. Both young men reflected on their time at Loyola and acknowledged all those who were part of their journey.

This year’s Guest Speaker was Dr. Eddie M. Connor, Jr., professor, author, international speaker, and minister. And what a dynamic speaker he was! He commanded everyone’s attention with his down-to-earth wisdom about life after Loyola and was rewarded with a very hearty ovation.

The alum pinning ceremony is a new tradition.

The celebration ended with what will now become tradition—a special pinning ceremony. With alums lined up on the altar, each graduate came forward and was “pinned” by one of the alums with a handsome pin emblazoned with the Loyola “L” and the word “Alum.” These pins can (and should!) only be worn by our alums—sorry Fr. Mark. Indeed, as this class of Bulldogs heads off to follow the best path for them and their families, the world will resonate with their wonderful harmony – Best Wishes!

New Faces As we opened our doors this Fall to our new and returning students, we were joined by new faces on our staff. Please join us in welcoming them to our Bulldog family: Amy Costello, Director of Loyola Work Experience Program (LWEP)

I graduated from The New School (New York) in 2008, with a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology).

I then attained my Master’s Degree in Counseling from Michigan State University in 2010. Before coming to Loyola, I served for five years as Program Manager of Generation of Promise, a youth leadership development, diversity, and inclusion awareness organization housed at Focus: HOPE in Detroit. In that position, I got to know some of the Loyola young men who were in the program. When I heard through Fr. Mark that Loyola was looking for an LWEP Director, I decided to look into it. I’m finding the position to be very challenging—but it’s a very positive challenge.

Jennifer Fox, Art Teacher

I received my undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in Fine Arts, as well as a dual Master’s degree in Counseling and Art Therapy. I worked for five years as a research assistant at Karmanos Cancer Institute and then transitioned to art therapy at Children's Hospital of Michigan. There I developed the first art therapy program and worked primarily in the dialysis area. Although I loved my role at the hospital, the desire for change and challenge led me to the doorstep of Loyola. After 13 years at a small Catholic school growing up, I wanted the close-knit family setting usually found at such schools, and I have found that at Loyola. When I am not at Loyola, I spend time with my 4-year-old daughter, high-school-sweetheart husband, and our two dogs. I also run a small photography business. I am excited to share my passion for art and art therapy with the students and staff at Loyola and can't wait to see the amazing projects to come in the future!

Rhonda Morris, Coordinator of Student Programs

I take great pride and pleasure in my work.

Fr. Mark saw my potential and hired me to be the Head of Building Maintenance. I have many years of experience working in commercial buildings, along with the skills needed to maintain the building. I am dedicated to efficiency and organization. I work well with others or independently and will utilize resources to get the job done. I am excited to be working at Loyola High School and to be a mentor to the students we serve.

Therese Marz, Business Manager

I recently joined Loyola as the Business Manager after careers in both accounting and education. Following graduation from Wayne State University in 1981, I began work with the CPA firm now known as Deloitte. For twenty years, I held accounting positions with various Detroit-area organizations, eventually landing at Marygrove College where my lifelong interest in education was strengthened and prompted me to return to school for a teaching degree. In 2003, I began teaching elementary school in the Center Line Public Schools, which I enjoyed. However, over the last two years, I felt God calling me to do more for the struggling students and families I encountered in my classroom and community. So, strengthened by faith, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, I decided to end my teaching career and begin a new educational role with Loyola High School. I feel blessed to be a part of Loyola and look forward to working with the Loyola community for the greater glory of God!

Dennis Morey, Social Studies and Computers, Head Basketball Coach

I graduated with a Master of Science (Forensic Science) and Bachelor of Science (Interdisciplinary Studies in Mortuary Science) from Wayne State University. I worked 20+ years at Henry Ford Hospital in Intensive Care and as a funeral director for local funeral home. For the past five years, I have worked in the homecare industry. I love taking care of people regardless of their ages. I became involved with Loyola when my son, Stefon Johnson ’10, was enrolled here—I’m proud to say he is a graduate of Siena Heights University. To many of the students, I became that mother-away-from-home. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and mentoring kids. I also enjoy all sports, especially track and field, which I coach.

Joseph Jupiter, Head of Building Maintenance

After graduating from UD Jesuit in 2000, I attended U of D Mercy. During my five years there I served as a Student Assistant Coach under the legendary Coach Perry Watson and his staff. I graduated with a degree in Political Science with a certificate in Legal Studies. After graduating from U of D Mercy, I served in the Alumni Volunteer Corps at UD Jesuit and also began my coaching career in football and basketball. I have coached football for ten years, serving as an Assistant Coach at the Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels, and basketball for nine years, serving as the Head Coach for the UD Jesuit Academy and JV teams and as assistant coach at the Varsity level. While coaching, I went back to school to get a post graduate degree in Education. I ended up at Loyola in August after applying for the Head Basketball coaching position. I also teach Social Studies and Computers and am enjoying working with these young men in the classroom and with the staff of Loyola.

Joseph Rayles. Health and Physical Education Teacher

I came to Loyola after having taught for seventeen years at Brother Rice Catholic High School.

While at Brother Rice, I taught health and physical education, as well as advanced physical education. I was also the strength and conditioning coach for football, lacrosse, wrestling, and basketball; the moderator and co-moderator for Warriors for L.I.F.E.; the moderator for Warriors for Faith Bible Study; head and assistant junior varsity football coach; co-head of the Faculty Faith Formation Team; and Department Head. This is my first time teaching at Loyola, but I have been involved with the school as a football coach from 2007-2014. I felt it was time for a change, so I prayed a nine-day novena to St. Monica and within nine days, I went from being at Brother Rice to Loyola! Thank you St. Monica for your prayers and God for granting my petition! I will be teaching health and physical education. May the good Lord bless us all!

Nicholas Schultz, Math Teacher

I graduated from Michigan Technological University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Computer Science). I am certified by the State of Michigan to teach Mathematics and Computers. I also graduated from Madonna University where I earned an Master of Science degree (Education Leadership). I have been teaching for ten years. I am married and have one boy (expecting a second son in November) and two girls (ages 4 and 6). I enjoy spending time with my family and watching football.

I support Loyola's desire to make its young men strive for excellence and help them become the future leaders of society within the context of Christ.

A School can never have too many Jesuits!

The core of a Loyola education is centered in the Jesuit philosophy of educating the whole person to be a responsible, thoughtful and caring individual—a “man for others.” We are grateful to now have three Jesuits on our staff. In addition to Fr. Mark Luedtke, our President, Fr. Adam DeLeon joined our teaching faculty this fall, and we also welcomed Br. Denis Weber back from his recent tertianship experience in Africa.

Fr. Adam DeLeon, S.J., Theology Teacher, Campus Minister

Fr. DeLeon is our newest member of the Theology department and Campus Ministry team. He is a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland. He received a Bachelor of Arts (Religious Studies) from the College of the Holy Cross as well as a Master of Arts (Social Philosophy) from Loyola University of Chicago, a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, and a Master of Theology from Xavier University of Louisiana’s Institute for Black Catholic Studies. Fr. Adam has taught at Christ the King Jesuit College Prep in Chicago and spent the past year working at St. Columbanus Parish on the south side of Chicago. Working at Loyola has been Fr. Adam’s “dream job” ever since he was a novice living in Berkley, MI. Fr. Adam is excited to be back in the classroom and contribute to the wonderful mission of Loyola.

Br. Denis Weber, S.J., Social Worker

Br. Denis joined Loyola in August of 2012. In January of 2016 he was missioned to Kenya for his tertianship, the last stage of Jesuit formation prior to final vows. While in Tanzania, Br. Denis worked at an orphanage, did some farming, washed clothes by hand, slaughtered a cow, and worked alongside the sisters while teaching English to the children. He also taught Ignatian spirituality at St. Ignatius preparatory school. While involved in both ministries, he was able “to see the wonderful light of the African people and culture.” The light he describes has remained with him and has allowed him to savor the places, the culture, and the children of Africa. Returning to Loyola this past August, he has found that light in our students.

He sees “the many graces that our students are to each another, the faculty, and the light they carry to others outside the Loyola community.”

Fr. Theodore (Ted) Munz, S.J., Loyola Board of Directors

Loyola is also blessed to add Fr. Theodore Munz to our Board of Directors.

Fr. Munz joins our other Jesuit Board Members Fr. Michael Christiana, S.J., Fr. Fran Daly, S.J., Rev. Mr. R.J. Fichtinger, S.J., and Fr. James Prehn, S.J. helping to ensure that Jesuit charism is alive and well at Loyola.

Fr. Munz, President of UD Jesuit High School and Academy, joined the Loyola Board of Directors this Fall. Fr. Ted brings a wealth of knowledge about Jesuit education. Born and raised in the Cincinnati area, he attended St. Xavier High School, also a Jesuit school. He attended the University of Detroit, where he earned a Bachelor in Philosophy. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago and graduate degrees in Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, CA. Fr. Munz was the team leader for the founding of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago from 1994-1996.

He served as president of Loyola Academy in suburban Chicago from 1996-2009.

Later, he served as Treasurer of the Midwest Jesuits. Prior to his appointment as President of UD Jesuit, he served as Minister at the Jesuit Community at the University of Detroit Mercy.

After graduation in 2001, I enrolled at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. While there, I enlisted in the US Army in 2003 and served as an Infantry Scout Sniper stationed at Fort Drum, NY. I had combat deployments in both Afghanistan and Iraq and earned two purple hearts, as well as a bronze star with valor during my tours of duty. In May of 2006, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing.

In that same year, I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as Sergeant (E5). In August 2008, I returned to Loyola to begin work as the Director of Admissions, along with coaching basketball and other extra-curricular programs. Last June, I was named the Dean of Student Formation.

My return to Loyola as Director of Admissions brings a new beginning to a journey I began eight years ago as a Loyola student. After graduating in 2011, I attended Saginaw Valley State University, majoring in Arts and Behavioral Sciences with a focus on English Literature and Philosophy. While there, I worked as a research assistant in the department of Sociology and then became a journalist for the school newspaper, the Valley Vanguard.

Mrs. Reilly has a picture hanging in her office that was taken in 1994 of Trevor Lile ’97 and me at Loyola’s first orientation. She jokingly inserted callout boxes with Trevor saying, “You really think you’re going to be Dean here when you grow up?” and me responding, “Oh Yeah!”

I did indeed become the Dean, and I am now Principal—she’ll have to change Trevor’s callout box—but not mine!

My years at Loyola were some of the best of my life. I was able to find myself spiritually and gained an academic confidence I had never known. The connection I was able to make with the adults here was truly priceless. Without their guidance and wisdom, I probably would not have ended up in the position I am in today. I am forever grateful.

I have always loved the idea of giving back to a community that has done so much for me, and every day when I walk into my office, I pinch myself and say, “Wow! I can’t believe I’m the Dean of Students at Loyola High.” As I share my life experiences with our young men, I hope I can be the same blessing to them that so many were to me during my tenure as a student.

Nearing the completion of my bachelor’s degree, I reflected on what went toward reaching this milestone. In doing so, I was forced to look beyond my personal efforts.

Arriving at this point was not a feat accomplished by me alone. There were many pillars of support that empowered me to reach new heights, with Loyola High School contributing to my central foundation.

The students here are just beginning their journeys, focused on maturing, sharpening their skills, and preparing their talents for the world. It is not difficult to re-imagine myself in their shoes. In the six years between my departure and return, I have had invaluable experiences that allow me to address the students’ insecurities and expectations with better insight. Being in this position, I am excited to offer restrospective knowledge and assistance to these young men as they take progressive steps in their own journeys.

It is a blessing to be back in this space. Now that I am a part of the Administration, I feel even more in line with Loyola’s mission and look forward to helping in any way possible to continue pushing it further.

I had the distinct privilege (only appreciated after adulthood) of attending Loyola High School while my father served as the Dean of Students.

After graduating in 1998, I attended Allegheny College to study Communications Arts and History. I played four years of football and was the president of the Black Student Union. I then worked in Cleveland for a year and returned to Loyola in 2004 to serve as the Director of Admissions. I completed the Master of Educational Leadership at Madonna University in the winter of 2015.

In June of 2008, while my father was transitioning from this life, I was named Dean of Students, the position he had held when Loyola first opened its doors. I remember hurrying to my parents’ home, where my father was in hospice care, to tell him the great news. The next morning my father passed. This was confirmation for me that working at Loyola was not my job but my ministry. Loyola has watched me grow from a boy to a young man, and now into a leader. Will Loyola continue to strive for excellence under my watch? My response is, “Oh Yeah!”

And More Alums…

David Benson ‘01 David studied at Wayne State University and Saginaw Valley University. He currently works as a business project manager in the nonprofit sector in Washington D.C. He expresses gratitude to his Loyola family for pushing him toward greatness. His advice for Loyola students: Always remember to be of service to others—you never know when you or someone close to you may be that person in need.

David is a cancer survivor. Because surgery was not an option due to the proximity of the tumor to his heart, just 6 inches away, David has endured extensive chemotherapy and radiation, all with a deep faith and positive attitude. He is currently in remission and never misses an opportunity to share his survivor story with others who may be helped by his experience.

Lyrrad (Rod) Braceful ‘05 Lyrrad attended New England College and was a member of their hockey team. He continued to play league hockey after graduation. He is employed by a sports company called LEGACY Global Sports, where he works primarily in the hockey division assisting with the agency that represents NHL players like US Olympian James VanReimsdyk, Detroit Red Wing Luke Glendening, and also recent Stanley Cup Champion Alec Martinez.

He also helps coach spring and summer teams that play in top tournaments all over Europe & North America. One of his fondest memories of Loyola, besides Kairos, was the school spirit and camaraderie. No matter what was going on, there was someone in the school to support and motivate you. His advice for Loyola students: Once you graduate, give back to the school and be proud to say you graduated from Loyola.

Randell Nichols ‘08 A graduate of Michigan State University, Randell lives in East Lansing and is a sales and operations manager for United Rentals. His fondest memory of Loyola is how the student body and faculty supported his family after the loss of his sister during his senior year. He also recalls when almost every private school closed in the City of Detroit, the staff of Loyola weathered the storm and continued to develop young men. His advice for Loyola students: Never give up and never forget where you come from; money is important, but passion and purpose bring a feeling that is fulfilling and unmatched. Lastly, ALWAYS remember “Live the Fourth” (the motto for the 4th and last day of the Kairos retreat).

Juan Holliday ’11 & Antonio Vaughn ‘11 Juan and Antonio stopped for a “selfie” on their way to the stage to receive their diplomas from Lang College in Tennessee last May. Both received degrees in Business Marketing. Best buddies since their days at Loyola, their friendship is now long distance. Antonio lives in Nashville with his wife and son and works for a bank. Juan has since moved to Atlanta, GA where he was awarded an internship at Vital XII.

In Memoriam Ryan Lundy ‘04 About two dozen alums showed up to lay Ryan Lundy to rest.

Ryan tragically died in a motorcycle accident this past June.

Ryan, who served in the US Army for 10 years with multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, leaves behind two young daughters. His brother, Jamison Lundy ‘01, said the family was deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support they have received since Ryan passed, especially from the Loyola family. Ryan was buried holding his Kairos cross—Ryan’s parents said he considered the Kairos Retreat in his senior year to be the experience that shaped his life more than any other.

Extracurriculars Bulldog Football hanging tough Our Bulldog football program got off to a strong season again this year. Both teams rolled to some easy victories while gaining valuable experience in their defeats. Our JV team ended the season 6-2, D’Anthony Robinson ’19 finds a lane. finishing in second place in their league. The future is bright for our Bulldogs with over 12 young men being moved up to Varsity. Some JV standouts this year were: Tyreak Powell ’18 as tight end and linebacker, led the team in tackles; Omari Johnson ‘18 played running back and led the team in TDs; starting All-Catholic: quarterback Teon Cochran ’19 led Kailen Abrams ‘17 the team in overall rushing yards.

The Varsity team qualified for the State playoffs for the eighth straight year, racking up seven wins and two losses laying claim to the Catholic League AA Division title. While the team lost to Divine Child and released their seven-year hold on the Prep Bowl trophy, we hope for another deep playoff run for our Bulldogs. Cross-Country runners earn respect With a small but mighty squad, our cross country team has found success this year thanks to freshman Nicholas Mariani and senior Antonio Greene. Having never run cross country prior to starting at Loyola, Nicholas set personal-best after-personal-best, culminating in a strong finish at the Catholic League championship and a chance to run in the State meet. Antonio Greene placed 18th in the C-D Catholic League meet and was in first place with a mile to go at the State meet before a cramp limited him to 28th place. Debate Team continues to stockpile awards Congratulations to Kyle McBeth ’18 & Elijah Stringer ’18, qualifiers for the National Speech and Debate Association Tournament last summer in Salt Lake City, Utah.

With the support of Loyola High School and donor Garrette Motta and the McNish Family Foundation, the team was able to compete in this international competition with over 25,000 other debaters. This was the second year in a row that our great debaters participated in this prestigious event.

The 2016-2017 season started strong with Kyle McBeth ‘18 winning second place for our Varsity team in the Detroit Urban Debate League. Roger Walker ‘18 and Jeremiah Debrosse ‘18 won first place for the JV team, and the entire team took second place overall with the second most wins on the day despite being one of the smallest teams in the field.

The first statewide tournament at West Bloomfield High School had Kyle McBeth teamed with Roger Walker, and together they placed second in the Open Division, while Elijah Stinger won first-place speaker in the Public Forum, a new competition for the team this year.

Our Bulldog debate team welcomed a new member this year, Jonathan Mize, a junior at UD Jesuit. As the Cubs do not have a debate team this year, Jonathan will be “going maverick” and competing with the Bulldogs this year. Jonathan is off to a solid start as well, winning second place as a novice in the Pappas State Tournament. Yet another way that our two schools collaborate during the school year – AMDG!

Loyola Making News Across the Country Media outlets in Metro Detroit and beyond are interested in the unique educational model that is Loyola. Over the last several months, Loyola has been featured in several media channels ranging from local outlets such as The Detroit News and WXYZ TV to national programs such as National Public Radio and Black Enterprises.

Loyola High School had the privilege of hosting National Public Radio show’s Here & Now reporter Peter O’Dowd, who visited our school earlier this year to better understand who we are, the young men that we serve and Loyola’s mission. While Peter was here, he interviewed several students and faculty members about how Loyola’s young men are exceeding expectations and flourishing within the challenging surroundings of their community. The original airing of the program was carried by over 500 stations nationally.

Loyola hosted our first ever “Decision Day” last spring, where all of our seniors announced where they will be attending school in the fall. The event, which was featured in the Detroit News, was set up as a take-off on ESPN’s Signing Day, including a panel of “analysts” guessing where each of our young men would eventually go; however, instead of our seniors revealing where they would be playing sports at, they announced where they would be studying in the fall. The News article highlighted that it was the sixth straight year that 100% of our seniors have been accepted into a 2- or 4-year colleges or universities, that our graduating seniors compiled over $1 million in scholarship offers, and that the class also included 13 young men who are first-generation college students.

Over the summer, Loyola hosted a crew from History Now, which is the History Network’s on-line channel. The program produced and aired a piece on the challenges that our students face and how Loyola’s unique approach helps to make an impact on their lives. The program was featured on the History Now channel and broadcast across the country.

Loyola student Ellis Cox ’17 was featured on WXYZ’s “Spotlight on the News” program hosted by Chuck Stokes and was broadcast locally on channel 7. Ellis spent his summer vacation completing the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights 2016 WXYZ DETROIT Freedom Tour, a 10-day inspirational and educational journey with 24 other high school students from across Michigan. The tour visited historic sites from the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

Loyola was also featured in Black Enterprise, the leading business and personal finance magazine for AfricanAmerican entrepreneurs, professionals, and corporate executives. The article, written by Black Enterprise reporter Robin White Goode, focused on how Loyola uses faith and support to empower our students and how we have become a beacon of hope in Detroit.

The Michigan Catholic featured an article on our Resource Closet and the critical role that it holds in helping to ensure that the young men of Loyola are prepared for success.

Whether in helping to keep them in dress code compliance or perhaps helping to fill some other need such as a healthy snack or to help out with a need at home, the Resource Closet is an asset to our young men who may need a little extra support.

at Loyola TransitionsLife Coordinator Transitions Coordinator ––> Extending Our Reach To provide support for our young men beyond their years at Loyola, we have recently created the role of Transitions Coordinator to help our alums in their post-high school endeavors. As Lead Counselor and College Counselor, Angela Hunter has come to know our students well and is a natural for assuming this role. Through phone calls, texts, college visits, care packages, and social media, Angela reaches out to provide assistance where needed to make the transition successful.

Mrs. Hunter’s outreach brought updates on our 2016 grads: Romari Ennis is attending Adrian College and has begun playing college basketball.

Kadeem Hudgens was all set to go to Henry Ford College, but after helping his dad over the summer with computer classes, he decided to pursue a degree in computer science at Baker College.

Clayborn Allen and Ricardo Murry are at Bowling Green University. Clayborn is managing his time well, and Ricardo is enjoying college life and making new friends.

Loyola is well-represented at Michigan State.

James Edwards is keeping up with his studies at Wayne State University.

James Newman, although not overly excited about the ambiance of Dakota Community College, is committed to the football team and is glad to be getting playing time.

Christian Brown is taking six classes and is happy to be back down south at Savannah State University.

Advisors at Henry Ford College presented Joshua Stewart with the opportunity to earn a degree in automotive repair, a good path for someone who enjoys working on his own car.

Perhaps he, Ja’len McCrary, and Andre Hampton will pass each other in the halls.

James Edwards ’16 is clearly settling in well at Wayne State.

Siena Heights University awarded Blaine Woodland an athletic scholarship that is allowing him to fulfill his football dream and forcing him to keep up with his studies.

Anthony Fitzpatrick is gaining confidence in his collegiate abilities at Lansing Community College along with his roommate Zavian Harriday, who balances school with a night-shift factory job.

Ernest Adams has truly gone green as a Michigan State Spartan. East Lansing has seven more of our alumni: Joseph Webb is enjoying his job as a security green coat at MSU games; Okwulisa Umeokolo loves college life and is deep into his studies; Richard Jackson is mastering college Algebra; Teshani Hutch is on top of his studies with a 97% in math; Treveon Vaughn is studying hard with a commitment to win his battle with math; Walter King is kept very busy in the James Madison Honors program; and Darryl Jordan is doing well in his studies and making new friends.

Closer to home, Cameron Kincaid is quietly taking care of business at Rochester College.

Week of Respect

Week of Respect Loyola High School hosted its first “Week of Respect” last spring, which consisted of a week-long series of events highlighting and bringing attention to several important issues within our community. The activities were made possible in part by a Project Unify Grant from Special Olympics of Michigan and the dedicated students and staff of Loyola High School. The project kicked off with the entire Loyola community, students and staff, walking the neighborhood surrounding our campus to “Rally for Respect against Bullying & Violence.” We got lots of encouraging car honks and “thumbs up” signals as we traversed the neighborhood.

The week culminated with an event hosted Our Bulldogs pose with Detroit’s finest who accompanied them on the Walk.

by Loyola students for over 100 cognitively impaired (C.I.) students aged 6-14 years old from various Detroit Public Schools, including Durfree Elementary, A.L. Holmes Elementary and Moses Field. Loyola students transformed our gym into a “carnival” featuring games and challenges that were designed, constructed, and run by our young men to celebrate the abilities of the visiting C.I. students.

Our young guests were entertained by a wide range of games such as the Ring Toss and Pop-a-Shot. The highlight for most was Loyola’s version of “Angry Birds” in which the students took turns launching “Angry Birds” from an oversized slingshot into a structure of blocks and pigs—they loved it! Our young guests were hesitant and shy at first, but our guys were so amazing at engaging them that their teachers were able to sit on the sidelines and enjoy watching the fun.

That meant he was truly happy and felt a bond between that young man and himself—such a powerful and monumental moment for my student”…

“Please, please please consider doing this again.”

Our young men were great ambassadors of Loyola that day. It was a wonderful, heart-warming celebration for all involved. We definitely look forward to doing this again in the spring.

Resource Closet Resource Closet Expands

Listening to our young men’s discussions/complaints brought to light that several of our water fountains were not working well. Looking into water fountains became a priority for Mrs. Nittmann.

Proceeds from consigned clothing and other donations to the Resource Closet made it possible to install a new water fountain on the main floor complete with an infra-red bottle filler. Funds were also available to bring the other water fountains up to par. (What discussion/ complaint will be heard next?)

If you or someone you know has a gently used navy sport coat, please consider helping our young men look their best by donating to the Blue Blazer Project. All other clothing donations are accepted as well, especially belts and dress shirts.

What was once a few belts and ties in a box on Mrs. Reilly’s bookshelf has grown into a full-fledged, walk-in Resource Closet for our young men— a saving grace for many. Whether “the dog chewed up my belt” or “I left my shoes at Grandma’s” or “my baby sister spit up on my shirt and it’s yucky,” our no-excuses dress policy stands. The Resource Closet allows our Bulldogs to address the problem, fix it, and be on their way to class.

With a little help from Resource Closet Coordinator, Sheila Nittmann, the endeavor is run by students, who are learning skills such as sorting, washing, folding, ironing, creating and implementing an inventory system, and composing written acknowledgments to donors. They also get to be “men for others” by helping each other pick out color-coordinated outfits in the right size.

Loyola’s collection of clothing from the Fall and Spring Drives went beyond expectations. Donations have kept the guys very busy with sorting and cataloguing. We keep what can used by our young men, while women’s and children’s clothing and accessories are sent to a resale company on consignment, and what is left is donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Proceeds earned from consignment items, along with cash donations and gift cards, are used for re-stocking the closet with frequently needed items (new undershirts, dress socks, etc.).

Items that do not fall under the “borrow” category, such as school supplies, toiletries, fruit, and other healthy foodstuffs, are available as well.

Finding more than a few navy blazers while sorting through yet another generous donation, a vision popped into Mrs. Nittmann’s head of how our young men would look all decked out in blue blazers. How impressive our guys would look when serving as ambassadors of Loyola or going for job interviews! And . . . the Blue Blazer Project was born! Thanks to a generous outpouring of support, we now have over 60 blue blazers. Our goal is to outfit every student. To do so, many sizes are still needed, especially for the linemen on the football team, our biggest Bulldogs (sizes 50 and up!).

Loyola logo patches are being sewn on all blazers making them look even sharper!

Thanks to our donors, the young men are looking good, feeling good, and taking that positive energy into the classroom.
