Letter from the President Twenty years ago

Loyola High School of Detroit, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, nurtures a culture of hope and academic success for young men challenged by an urban environment and prepares them to be men of Christian love, justice, and service who act with integrity, compassion, and courage.

Twenty years ago, our first graduating class set out into the world. Their hopes and dreams were paired with the well wishes of family, friends, and Loyola staff members. After graduation, we never know how many will return to visit and how often. Each year the process repeats itself.

Some alums we never see or hear from again.

But many still find their way back to Loyola.

As we look ahead to our 25th anniversary next year, we have high hopes for all of our alumni, now almost 600 strong. Our highest hope is that each of them remains well and finds success in life. Another of our hopes is that they return to share their stories of comings and goings, their families, and their careers. They are the foundation for all of our students.

We are fortunate to see some alums daily.

In our last edition, we highlighted three that are on staff at Loyola: Wyatt Jones III ‘98, Principal, Michael Black ’01, Dean of Student Formation, and Paul Davis ’11, Director of Admissions. In addition, Assistant Track Coach Sherman Flake ‘97 appears almost every day in the spring to prepare our young men for their annual run at a State title. And then there is James Edwards ’16 with a whopping 25 visits this year. We certainly have not seen the last of him as he routinely finds his way back to our campus from Wayne State.

When we think about what connects us to our alma maters, a favorite teacher or staff person comes to mind. Most of our now older alums make sure to stop by Ms. Reilly’s office for a hug and a treat. Photos of many of them decorate her walls. More recent alums swing through Angela Hunter’s office— not surprising as she sends them care packages in her role as Transitions Coordinator.

On a recent visit, one alumnus, who had been away from campus for many years, remarked about how much the school building has changed. Recent renovations and reconfigurations of spaces into student-directed resource rooms have indeed made the school look different, but it still feels like home to returning alums and current students as well.

We always look forward to our alums sharing their stories – past and present – with students and staff. We are pleased to share some of those stories with you in this edition.

We also connect from time to time with alums of the former St. Francis De Sales Catholic School, the building that Loyola now occupies.

It is uplifting to hear them sing their fight song in the hallways and reminisce about their high school days. Some of them see in Loyola a place to call their own.

Many of our donors no longer have a school to visit or current students to support. If you know someone who wishes to support Catholic education, urban education, or a fine group of young men, please come see what makes Loyola special. Our family, our brotherhood, and our community grow with each new class of Bulldogs, with parents who entrust their sons to us, and with donors and benefactors who support the great work we do with and for our young men—all for the greater honor and glory of God. #AMDG Bulldog Proud,

Advancement It’s all about the boys...

I can tell you that I have pages and pages of answers and thoughts to each of those queries. Loyola is a lot of things:

It’s a place where the huge gap between the charged tuition and what it actually costs to educate a young man is covered by generous and dedicated benefactors committed to giving these young men the opportunity for a Loyola education.

It’s a place where parents send their boys to become the young men that they know are inside of them, but need some help getting out.

Loyola is all of these things, and much more. At the end of the day, however, it’s all about the boys.

It’s a place where faculty and staff toil and sweat, encourage and discipline, laugh and cry and sometimes bang their heads against the wall as they go above and beyond to keep our boys moving forward – to help them name themselves and find their way.

They enter Loyola as boys (some as big boys), and the entire Loyola community shares in the mission of helping them become Men for Others by the time they leave. We walk with them on the path to becoming the young men we know they are capable of becoming. We encourage them to self-define and not be limited by whom society may think they should be.

We guide them as they find their own unique paths and develop their inner compasses to lead them on their way through the rest of their lives.

As you may imagine, in my role as Director of Advancement, I spend a lot of time thinking about the answers to questions such as “What is Loyola? What makes Loyola different – the “special sauce” – that makes this place continue to thrive after 24 years?”

For almost 25 years now, Loyola has been committed to accepting every interested and qualified student, regardless of his family’s financial situation. Thanks to contributions from supporters, sponsors, events and our Work Experience Program, we have been able to make a Loyola education a reality for our families.

We are certainly proud of achieving our 7th straight year of 100% college acceptance by our seniors. We are proud of the $1,000,000 in scholarships our graduating seniors have garnered for the schools they will attend. We are proud of the continued athletic and academic success of our sports and debate teams. In the end, we are most proud of the almost 600 alums who have walked across our graduation stage and of their individual journeys from boys who entered our halls to the young men who went on to become a husband, father, teacher, lawyer, engineer, police officer, baker, chef or maybe even the principal of a high school.

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our first graduating class, we know that many of you in your own way have had a hand in our success. Whether you have been with us since our earliest days or you have only recently become part of the Bulldog community, please know that our almost 600 alums have benefitted in some way thanks to your support.

We appreciate all that you do for Loyola, and I look forward to celebrating our 25th year with you and the entire Loyola family beginning this fall!

LIFE AT LOYOLA

Archbishop Visit Loyola was blessed to host both Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Brian Paulson, S.J., Provincial of the Midwest Jesuits, on March 14th. Archbishop Vigneron presided at our all-school mass with Jesuit concelebrants Frs. Brian Paulson, Mark Luedtke, and Adam DeLeon, as well as Fr. Pullis from the Archdiocese. The Loyola senior class spent time with the Archbishop sharing with him what it means to be a Loyola man and receiving his words of wisdom to take with them to college and to their lives beyond Loyola.

As we look forward to celebrating our 25th year, the entire Loyola community extends its gratitude to both the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Midwest Jesuits for their dedicated support of our mission over the years.

Breakfast with a Bulldog At our first ever “Breakfast with a Bulldog,” Loyola welcomed over 200 parents, grandparents, and siblings who joined us for Morning Prayer and breakfast with their “Bulldog” scholars. While feasting on fresh fruit, eggs, Fr. Mark, preparing French toast, tries to keep Students enjoy breakfast with their families in French toast, sausage, and the gathering space by the chapel. Smiles all up with the demand of the hungry crowd, peach cobbler prepared around! and served by Loyola staff, Bulldog family members shared stories of their youth and gave their best advice for our young men growing up in the City of Detroit. The morning was a wonderful gathering of Bulldog families, friends, and staff—we look forward to hosting our 2nd Annual Breakfast next year, and the 3rd the year after, etc., etc., etc. Definitely a new Loyola tradition!

College Signing Day

Student Cafe

On May 1st, Loyola held its second annual, college “Signing Day” event, where each of our 31 graduating seniors announced the colleges they will attend this fall. For the seventh straight year, 100 percent of Loyola’s graduating class has been accepted into a two-year or four-year college. The class of 2017 also exceeded $1 million in scholarships awarded.

It began as a dream for Loyola Principal Wyatt Jones: a space for students to relax during the day, to come together in a casual space, and to be incentivized to earn better grades. The dream evolved into a senior elective class, Entrepreneurship, with a group of 11 young men charged with creating a cafe that their fellow students could enjoy and which become the legacy of the Class of 2017.

Our “Signing Day” program featured a replica of ESPN’s College GameDay program with a panel of Loyola staff members speculating on the final decision by each collegebound senior. With Hunter Harris ’17 lets the world know more than 150 ache’s headed to Fordham in the fall. ceptances to choose from, Loyola seniors selected from Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), including Morehouse College and North Carolina A&T, as well as public universities closer to home, like Michigan State. Jesuit schools were also in the mix, including Fordham University and University of Detroit Mercy.

Loyola was also honored to host Lisa Howze, Chief Government Affairs Officer to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. Howze spoke about the importance of a college education and the roles that our young men can play in Detroit’s future. The event was widely covered by the media with articles in the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News, as well as Principal Wyatt Jones ’98 being a guest on the Mitch Albom radio show.

Signing Day was wonderful celebration in recognition of the great accomplishments of our young men as they continue to prepare themselves for their years beyond Loyola.

BEFORE...

Early in the year, the group studied basic business principles, and local entrepreneurs visited the class to teach the students first-hand about the business world. Armed with some basic business knowledge, the students pooled their individual ...AFTER talents and ideas to create a vision for the student cafe. Decisions were made collaboratively on elements such as the name of the café, the design of the space, and the logo and motto.

The young men visited classrooms speaking with students of all grades to determine what menu items to offer. Armed with these results, the students researched online and by phone to find the best sources for menu items. After discussing pricing, they prepared sample budgets. To design the actual space, students put together comprehensive proposals, and each student presented his proposal to the larger group. The proposals were discussed and then voted on to make the final determination.

Teacher Alycia Schoof helped to find furniture donations, and one memorable afternoon, students, Principal Jones, Coach Tjuan Flowers, and Art Teacher Jennifer Fox picked up various couches, end tables, armchairs, and a large blue-and-gray bar that will serve as the centerpiece of the cafe.

Students were all set to paint the room themselves, but UAW-Ford stepped in like Cinderella’s fairy godmother, and transformed the space (the former Prayer Room on the third floor) with Bulldog blue walls and white trim. With carpet on one side and laminate on the other, it will be the perfect place to study, converse, and have snacks. The seniors of the Class of 2017 are proud of the gift they will be leaving to future classes.

Service

Jenna-Thon Freshmen Ian Mayers and Camron Baker joined Loyola faculty member Kathy Gross in the Jenna-Thon 5k race to support the Jenna Kast Believe in Miracles Foundation that enriches the lives of Michigan children suffering from life threatening medical conditions. All proceeds from the event go toward buying gifts and bringing joy and hope to their worlds.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Polar Plunge

Elijah Stringer ’18 once again hosted Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help raise funds to defeat childhood cancer.

Elijah and students across the country sold brownies and lemonade throughout the day at stands in their schools, raising over $1 million in funds to support childhood cancer programs.

Some of our “braver” Bulldogs kept up the now-annual tradition of jumping into a tub of ice cold water at the Lansing Polar Bear Plunge earlier this year.

Sophomores Damany O’Neal, Jaden Graham, and Logan Warren each made the chilly leap raising over $300 for Special Olympics.

While the water was cold, Damany convinced Logan to go a second time—brrrr.

Special Olympics As part of our mission of forming Men for Others and through a grant from Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI), several students participated in the Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games as chaperones and partners with athletes from SOMI. The State Summer Games is the largest SOMI event in Michigan with over 2,600 athletes participating.

This year the games were hosted at Central Michigan University from June 1-3, with over 3.400 coaches, volunteers, chaperones, and family members helping to make the event a huge success. Each year student chaperones are partnered up with SOMI athletes to compete in various sports competitions.

Loyola chaperones and their athletic partners competed in the bocce ball games. Jordan Copeland ‘20 and Elijah Stringer ’18 each won a gold medal in the “High Divison.” Freshmen Cameron Cason, Camron Baker, Timmy McDonald, and Antwuan Powell brought home silver. The Loyola team was lead by Head Coach and Project Director Kathy Gross. Great work Bulldogs!

Loyola Cooks Up a Storm!

Stemming from our 12th grade Christian Service Project, the young men of Loyola recently started a collaborative cooking and nutrition program in partnership with St. Christine’s Food Pantry, located in the Brightmoor district of Detroit. Thanks to Ms. Molly Sanford, St. Christine’s Food Pantry Director, the after-school extra-curricular has been incorporated into the Resource Elective class and offers ideas for healthier food options, cooking experiences, recipe creations, Ms. Molly Sanford joins seniors Ricky Hayes, Torrin Evans, Aaron business planning, and the opportunity to build Dorsey, and Jordan Carter packing eggs for distribution to the needy. neighborhood relationships with those serving others in our community at-large and helping them become Men for Others.

Our students learn about food, nutrition, kitchen safety, and will also have the opportunity to create a “free farmers market,” which will be accessible to the physically handicapped and/or neighbors with transit limitations. Not only is learning about food and health important in reaching out to others, but these adult skills help our students as they go home and care for themselves and their own families, as well as putting them on a path to a lifestyle of good nutrition.

Cooking has also been part of the 9th grade Science and 12th grade Resource Class curriculum, with students recently preparing and freezing meals for an elderly couple in need. Taste-testing was a must (quality control!) and all students agreed that the beef stew and apple cobbler tasted great. Quinoa and squash soup... not so much!

Week of Respect Loyola held its second annual Week of Respect in April. The week kicked off with a walk to “Rally for Respect Against Bullying & Violence.” Starting on our campus, the entire Loyola community, students and staff alike, walked the neighborhood surrounding Loyola to raise awareness about bullying and violence.

The week culminated with a student-run Carnival in the gym for over 100 cognitively impaired young boys and girls from Durfee Elementary and Bates Academy. Our young guests were treated to a variety of games, including Ring Toss, Pop-a-Shot, and the ever-popular Angry Birds, all of which had been designed and constructed by our students. Squeals of delight could be heard as our guests received prizes and rewards for their efforts.

A great time was had by all, and the Men for Others spirit of our young men came shining through big time. It was totally heartwarming to see the smiles and hear the laughter of our guests as they engaged with our young men.

On the Cover From the very beginning, it has always been about the boys Like almost all great ideas, Loyola began with a conversation and a simple question…

“What do you think about….” And the rest, as they say, is history…

The “who” engaged in that early conversation were the Archdiocese of Detroit (Cardinal Maida) and the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus (Rev. Joe Daoust, S.J.).

The “what” were young, urban males in Bulldog graduates were both joyful and prayful on their big day.

Detroit and the challenges and obstacles they faced (and continue to face) that limited and derailed their path to achieving their fullest potential.

The “where” took some time and some resources to develop, but Loyola High School eventually settled on the former site of St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in northwest Detroit. The school building was a shell of its former self and needed at least a year of refurbishing. So Loyola “launched” its first year at the former St. Francis Home for Boys and moved down the street the following year to its present location.

Founding Dean Wyatt Jones, Jr. sang “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” which became a graduation tradition until his death in 2008.

The “how” was probably the most difficult one to answer, but all agreed, in true Ignatian spirit, to “go forth” and figure it out day-by-day. With the Loyola brain trust hard at work, things just kept coming together until…

The first day of school in the fall of 1993 – place yourself in that moment if you can – everything and everyone is new. Forty young men show up as incoming freshmen to a temporary building that looked like anything but a high school. The staff, as you can imagine, kept their fingers crossed that everything would work out. Day 1 became Day 2, Day 2 became Day 3, and so on (yes, God must have kept saying, “It is good!”). The wheels did not fall off, the building Cardinal remained standing, and the young men and staff continued to Archbishop show up every day (at least most days…). Eventually, Day 1 Maida was became Year 1 … and with a collective sigh from all involved, thrilled to be part of the first came the realization that this gem we call Loyola might just work out after all. graduation.

This coming school year, we will celebrate our 25th year. Before we do, we want to take this opportunity to honor our first graduating class that celebrated its 20th reunion this past June. These young men were the vanguard of Loyola, the foundation for future alumni. They and their families were the ones who took a leap of faith and walked into the St. Francis Home for Boys in the fall of 1993 looking for an alternate path that would help them to be better men—Men for Others. These same young men, as sophomores, got things started right here on Pinehurst, even as more renovations were still underway. These same young men walked across the stage at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church to receive their diplomas in June of 1997—the first of 19 classes yet to come behind them—the first to be called alumni of Loyola.

Jonathon Clark ‘97 definitely made his presence known daily while a student at Loyola with both his sense of humor and outgoing personality. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army, where he spent the next eight years. During this time, Loyola still felt his presence through his almost weekly phone calls to the school to find out what was going on. After his discharge from the Army, Jonathon moved back to Detroit to be near his family, and he started working at Loyola in 2007 as Assistant Director of the Loyola Work Experience Program. He left Loyola in 2015 to take classes and become more involved in community outreach. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Brightmoor Alliance and Brightmoor SOUP, where the community helps to fund neighborhood projects. He most recently became President of 482Forward. a citywide education-organizing network in Detroit that is committed to ensuring that all Detroit children have access to an excellent education regardless of race or socioeconomic status. He is also a leader and mentor at Mission City, a community hub located in the Brightmoor neighborhood.

Jonathon credits a turn for the better in his life to his wife Dawn Wilson-Clark, whom

he married in 2013. Together they have “the 7 greatest children any parent could be blessed with.” Jonathan credits Loyola for planting in him the desire to be a Man for Others in his community and city and to change the world for the better.

An outstanding student during his years at Loyola, Tyrone Finnie ’97 was valedictorian of the first graduating class. Since 2000, Tyrone has been working on the assembly line at Ford Motor Co. Always full of pep and energy on the Bulldog basketball court, Tyrone has stayed in shape and continues to play pick-up basketball in his spare time.

Recalling the day he sat down with Fr. David Mastrangelo, SJ, and Coach Robert Brown to discuss his possible enrollment at Loyola, Tyrone was not at all enthused about going to an all-boy school. After four years, however, he felt it was the best educational decision he ever made.

As he puts it, “That little school nobody knew about that sits in the middle of the ‘hood’ changed my life. Loyola made me into a man, scholar, and athlete. I am grateful for the teachers and staff for their patience and understanding in dealing with so many different personalities and situations. Go Loyola Bulldogs!”

After graduation, as a newly-minted Bulldog alum, Sherman Flake ’97 stayed on the path of Jesuit education by enrolling at the University of Detroit Mercy. After two years of study, Sherman took a different route and began a two-year program at the Michigan Institute of Aeronautics. Upon receiving his certification, he worked as a mechanic for Kitty Hawk at Willow Run Airport for one year. He was then hired by Avflight Detroit City and has been there ever since, now serving as General Manager.

He is now starting an internship program for Detroit kids who are interested in aviation and is hoping to hire a few Loyola students this summer.

Voted Outstanding Athlete of the Class of 1997, Sherman has coached our track team for the last 17 years—some days it seems like Sherman never left. Sherman is married and has two sons, ages 7 and 11.

Sherman’s fondest memories of Loyola are the Kairos Retreat, which affected him deeply, and hearing Dean Jones (founding dean and father of Principal Wyatt Jones ’98) singing uplifting songs up and down the hallways of the school each day.

In Memorium Al-Muqaddim Muhammad ‘97 (May 14, 1978 – June 9, 2017) The Loyola Community is very saddened by the death of Al (Mookie) Muhammed ’97. Al embodied the spirit of Loyola with his caring ways, readiness to lend a helping hand, and support of all things Loyola. As a Bulldog, he was on the varsity football team and was a faithful fan at all the other sporting events. He continued to cheer on the Bulldogs after his graduation attending games whenever he could. After graduating from Loyola, he played football at the college level at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA for two years. He returned to Detroit and worked for Frito Lay before taking a job with DDOT in 2005, becoming a member of Local 26 ATU. It was refreshing to hear Al talk about his job as a Detroit bus driver—he loved it. With his outgoing personality, he engaged his passengers in conversation, listening to their stories, and lending a helping hand where possible. He never tired of it.

Al accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of West Side Unity Church. Al and his wife Sarah were blessed with four beautiful children to whom he was totally devoted. Family was the highlight of his life, and he was always giving fatherly advice to not only his children, but to nephews, nieces and anyone else who would listen. Al died a peaceful death in his sleep on June 9th. He will be missed by a host of family and friends.

On the Cover After graduating from Loyola, Anthony Halley ’97 completed an Associate Business Management degree at Wayne County Community College. He then went on to earn a BA degree from Dallas Baptist University and is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity at Southwestern Seminary. Anthony is married and has been the pastor of True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas since 2015. Accepting his call to ministry at the early age of 14, Anthony’s skills in preaching the Word of God were obvious to students and staff at Loyola.

Because of this, he was asked to speak to the graduates, families, friends, and staff at Loyola’s first Baccalaureate Mass. Those in attendance will never forget his talk. At the time, his fellow graduates were sensitive about being labeled “at risk.” So there were some gasps when Anthony began his talk by saying, “It is said that we are ‘at risk’—and we are—all of us!” Then he continued, “We are at risk of becoming doctors, at risk of becoming lawyers, teachers, policemen …” He brought the house down.

Anthony describes Loyola as an exceptional place and credits the Kairos Retreat as being “one of the most pivotal times of my life—it transformed me and the way I thought about ministry.” Having previously worked as a youth pastor. Anthony has implemented programs for children and young adults at his church. Many new members have joined and former members have restored their memberships. Rev. Halley is a gifted Man for Others.

Trevor Lile ’97 moved to Paris after graduation to begin the process of becoming a priest. After a year, however, he decided this was not the path for him and returned to Detroit. Three days after his return, Trevor met the woman who was soon to become his wife. They have two children: Nicole, 20, and Trevor Jr., 14.

Trevor has worked for several companies over the years.

He was at HAP for seven years and Habitat for Humanity in Detroit and Oakland Counties for nine years, where he worked in the retail division helping to start and establish several new locations. He is now a property manager for a firm in Auburn Hills, where he manages Home Owners Associations and Condos in 26 communities with over 3,100 homes. Earning a Culinary Arts Degree from Henry Ford Community College, he has had his own catering/ personal chef company for over ten years. While a student at Loyola, Trevor was a real go-getter, always trying to come up with ways to raise money for Loyola—he even succeeded one year with his special Loyola calendars.

Trevor credits Loyola for teaching him what a man, a spouse, and a father is supposed to be. Now he wants his son to walk in the same footsteps and has enrolled him in Loyola—Trevor Jr. will become a Bulldog in the fall.

Amos Houston ’12 recently graduated from Eastern Michigan with a BA in Communications.

While on a football scholarship at Eastern, he was a three-year starting linebacker for the EMU Eagles. Amos has been accepted into the master’s program and will begin working on his MA in the fall. You may remember Amos from the NFL Films documentary from a few years ago.

Donovan Jackson ’12 recently graduated from Austin Peay State University with a BA in Communications. While at APSU, he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and has been a three-year starter for the Governors football team, Donovan has one season left of eligibility that he will use while pursuing a master’s degree. He hopes to one day play in the NFL. Keep following your dreams Donovan…

Antonio Kessler ’14 has spent the last 3 years at Central Michigan University. One of his favorite and proudest moments at Loyola was when he and Mrs. Hunter called CMU to see if he had been accepted, and the answer was “yes.”

Although he was doing well there, last spring Antonio had a calling to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He will complete boot camp June 24. Kevin is currently working as a Manufacturing Specialist at Texas Instruments at the Dallas, TX HQ. In his free time, he is busy studying for the GRE exam with plans to apply for graduate admissions at Jackson State University. “Attending Loyola entered me into a lifetime brotherhood of the Men for Others, establishing positive virtues that still guide my decisions to this day. I still have lasting friendships with the young men I graduated with, and I practice the St. Ignatius Prayer for Generosity that we diligently listened to at the end of every day.” We’re proud of you, Kevin.

Ian McNeal ’14 is preparing to enter his senior year at Tuskegee University, where he majors in architecture and plays fullback on the football team. Transition to College Made Easy (Easier) To provide support for our young men beyond Loyola, Transitions Coordinator Angela Hunter keeps in touch with our alums in their post-high school endeavors. As Lead Counselor and College Counselor, Mrs. Hunter knows our students well and is a natural in this role. Through phone calls, texts, college visits, care packages, and social media, Mrs. Hunter reaches out to provide support and assistance where needed.

Following is her update on the Class of 2016: • Clayborn Allen and Ricardo Murry have both made good adjustments to college life and will be returning to Bowling Green University in the fall.

• Demetrius Berry is continuing his studies at Oakland Community College.

• Christian Brown has left Savannah State University to serve in the Army.

• Maurice Darling started the year strong but fizzled a bit at the end.

He will be taking classes over the summer and return to Leland College in the fall.

• Ernest Adams, Teshani Hutch, Richard Jackson, Darryl Jordan, Walter King, Okwulisa Umeoko, Treveon Vaughn, and Joseph Webb will all be returning to MSU and are looking forward to welcoming two Bulldogs from the Class of 2017 to the campus.

• Ari Washington is transferring from Schoolcraft Community College to Lansing Community College in the hopes of playing basketball while continuing his academics.

• Leon Wilkerson is returning to Western Michigan University and is looking forward to showing the seven Bulldogs from the class of 2017 the ropes.

Optimists Club

Choir Earlier this year, Jason Allen ’19 and Elijah Stringer ’18 placed 1st and 3rd respectively in a scholarship essay contest sponsored by The Detroit Optimist Club. The theme of the essay contest focused on “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.”

The Loyola choir is small but mighty…and growing. We have been blessed to have as our Director, Joe Balistreri, who is the Director of Music for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Joe takes time out of his busy schedule to come to Loyola once a week during Academic Seminar to work with our young men. In March, the choir proudly sang at a mass celebrated by Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Jesuit Provincial Brian Paulson, S.J. Order My Steps, Perfect Praise, and Taste and See are now a permanent part of their expanding repertoire. Look for our Bulldog Choir to sing at future events.

Kyle McBeth ’18 and Camron Baker ’20 also fared very well in the Optimists’ Oratorical Championships with their presentations on “What the World Gains from Optimism.”

Camron came in 3rd place at the event, and Kyle presented the winning oration, qualifying him for a spot in the District Finals.

Looks like we have quite the Optimists roaming the halls of Loyola!

Excellence in Teaching: Kathy Gross On June 5, the Catholic High School League and the Archdiocese of Detroit Office of Catholic Schools held their 42nd annual Catholic Schools Scholar Athlete & Teacher Recognition Dinner at DeCarlo’s Banquet and Conference Center in Warren. Our very own Kathy Gross received the Excellence in Teaching Award for 2016-2017.

Ms. Gross was honored for her almost 30 years of teaching – 19 of those at Loyola – and her profound influence on the young men that she teaches. She has taught almost every subject Loyola has to offer, including English, Geography, World History and Science, a subject she transitioned to this year with two new course loads. She introduced her students to a range of creative lab experiments and hands-on learning that young men prefer. Ms. Gross also continues in her role as coach of our Debate team, guiding our young men to multiple league championships and trips to Nationals.

Kathy’s commitment to her students both inside and outside of the classroom is beyond compare – organizing service trips to foreign countries, chaperoning and coaching our young men on various trips around the country, as well as organizing service projects and events throughout the year, even during school breaks.

We are blessed to have her on our staff and to benefit from her example, her leadership, and all her good work. The entire Bulldog community applauds Ms. Gross on her well-deserved recognition as one of the best teachers around. We especially thank her for her dedication to Loyola and our young men.

Debate “Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.”

Desmond Tutu Members of the Loyola Bulldog Debate Team have learned the wisdom of that advice. They recently wrapped up another impressive season, which included travelling the country collecting trophies and speaker awards at each stop.

For the first time in school history, our debaters were invited to participate in the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) hosted in Washington D.C. at Georgetown University. Our young men represented Nigeria and competed against 5,000 students gathered from around the world. Each of our debaters gave at least one speech in front of individual committee sessions ranging from 80-300 students. It was truly an incredible experience for all of them. Many thanks to the the McNish Family Foundation and Georgetown University for helping to make the trip possible for our young men.

The team ended its regular debate league season on a high note as well. In the final league championships at Wayne State University, juniors Kyle McBeth and Roger Walker secured the top finishing spots, qualifying them for the National Urban Debate League championships in Chicago. Competing against teams from around the country, Kyle and Roger made a strong showing in Chicago, advancing to the 3rd round of the competition by knocking off teams from Dallas and Los Angeles in the first two rounds, including another Loyola High School Congratulations to Ms. Gross and her squad on another great season!

a l o y o L t a t Ar While many people know that Loyola has a strong athletic program and an incredibly successful Debate team, not so well known is our rich tradition of students and graduates with tremendous talent in art and design. We are thrilled that this tradition remains in good hands and flourishes under our new Art teacher, Jenny Fox, who has done a fantastic job of tapping into our Bulldogs’ talents and showcasing their work around the building.

One great example is the “Mask” project Mrs. Fox worked on with her students. Utilizing her background in Art Therapy, Mrs. Fox had each of her students create papier mâché masks of their own faces. Each student then had to use words and collages to decorate their individual masks.

Words and phrases of how they think society sees them were placed on the outside of the masks. On the inside, they placed words and phrases depicting how they think people they know well would describe them.

Earlier this spring, Loyola hosted an exhibit from the Michigan Roundtable organization entitled “We Don’t Want Them,” an exhibit centered on historical housing segregation issues. Mrs. Fox brought in local artists to help our young men create art pieces about their interactions with the exhibit, which were then displayed at our first “Community Art Night” on March 7th, when we opened our doors to students, families, and supporters for an evening of art and celebration.

Sports Bulldog Football Builds on a Great Foundation The Bulldogs put forth another tremendous season as they made it to the State Finals for the fourth time in five years—way to go Bulldogs!

After a dismal loss in the Semi-final game last year when they were snowed under by Pewamo-Westphalia (weatherwise and scorewise), the two teams met in the State final with the Bulldogs looking to avenge that loss.

Regrettably the Pirates vanquished Loyola by a score of 28-14 to win their first State championship. The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses – not too shabby...

The offseason brought about a major change in the coaching ranks. John 2016/2017 Varsity Football Team and Coaches represented Loyola well this year Callahan resigned after eight seasons as head coach of the Varsity football team, directing the Bulldogs to 1 State championship (2014), 4 trips to the State finals, 5 Regional championships, and 6 District championships. Coach Cal accepted the position of Head Football Coach at New Haven High School.

Our new coach, William Tandy, M.S.W, Ed. S, made an immediate impact on our young men, appearing on campus and encouraging the Bulldogs in the classroom and in the gym. Coach Tandy understands that the team has found recent success and has big plans for the future: “I am looking forward to working with Loyola in order to develop a championship culture while continuing the Loyola mission of developing men for others.” Over the past 23 years, Coach Tandy was the head coach for the Westside Cubs varsity football team, winning 15 championships in 18 appearances. His team motto “God, Books and Ball” has inspired his players to become successful and responsible young men, who have gone on to become engineers, councilman, ministers, college presidents, mayors, NFL players and parents.

We look forward to another great season and the good work that Coach Tandy, his fellow coaches, and our players will do together next season – onward!

Loyola Sprinter Captures Indoor Track Title Congratulations to Loyola senior Hunter Harris who won State titles in both the 400m dash and the 4x200m relay at the Michigan Indoor Track League. Hunter was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that finished 2nd at the indoor State finals.

Hunter signed a letter of intent to play football at Fordam University in the fall, where he has received a full athletic scholarship. The entire Bulldog Community congratulates Hunter on these remarkable accomplishments!

Basketball Begins a New Era At the end of the last school year, long-time basketball coach and science teacher John Buscemi accepted a teaching/coaching position at the high school in Corunna to be closer to family. After an extensive search, Loyola welcomed Coach Dennis Morey to the program. Coach Morey, who also teaches Social Studies, joined us from the UDJ Cubs where he was the assistant Varsity basketball coach for the state championship team.

Coach Morey led the Varsity squad to their 6th straight Catholic Division title, posting an overall 12-9 record before falling in the state district finals against Cornerstone.

The JV Bulldog team placed second in their Division and the Freshmen won their Division with a 12-5 record.

Loyola Rugby Football Club Kicks Off Inaugural Season This spring saw the Bulldogs take to the rugby field for the first time in school history. Under the guidance of coaches Fr. Adam DeLeon, SJ, Ron Cornell, and Zac Pelton, the team enthusiastically joined the Eastern Conference of Michigan Rugby. Not really knowing what rugby was, the Bulldogs watched videos and ran plays at practice. Soon they could not get enough of rugby!

Teron Johnson ’17 was voted Team MVP, as well as All-Conference. Jimmie Chappell ’18 was voted Backline MVP and also received All-Conference honors. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 1-4 record, but are looking to improve next season with a talented, young team.

Bulldog Football Players Sign on the Dotted Line In February, Loyola hosted a National Football Signing Day event where six of our seniors signed commitment letters to play college football. Be on the lookout for our Bulldogs playing football this fall at Adrian College, Central State University, Ferris State University, Fordham University, Garden City Community College, and Lakeland University.

The highlight of the event was senior Hunter Harris accepting a full athletic scholarship to Fordham University to continue at a Jesuit school! #AMDG! The stage is set for our football starts to make their commitments

Bulldog Bowling The Bulldog Varsity Bowling Team completed its third successful year in the Catholic League with a record of 5-4. Jaron Taylor ‘18 earned All-Catholic honors by coming in fourth out of 60 bowlers in the Catholic League Championship. D’Anthony Robinson ‘19 earned All-League and Antwaun Powell ‘20 earned All-Academic honors. Davion Brinkley, D’Anthony’s older brother, was a welcome addition this year as our practice coach. Every Sunday during the December-February season, the team met at Renaissance Bowling for practice and competed once or twice a week all over the tri-county area.

Next year’s goal is to reach the State finals.

Loyola Work Experience program (LWEP) LWEP Appreciation Luncheon Celebrates Seniors and Sponsors In April, we held our annual LWEP Appreciation Luncheon at the University of Detroit Mercy to highlight the dedication of our amazing sponsors as well as to honor our graduating seniors.

Welcoming remarks were given by Amy Costello, Director of LWEP, Loyola President Fr. Mark Luedtke, SJ, and Joseph Eisenhauer, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Business and Administration.

While guests enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by UDM Catering, Jimmy Settles, President of UAW-Ford National Programs, gave the keynote address and spoke about the importance of LWEP in the development of our young men and shared his personal experiences with our students who work in the UAW-Ford offices. The event was capped off with seniors Malcolm Mayes, Price Watkins, and Anthony Zuniga talking about their LWEP “on the job” experiences.

To enhance students’ potential for success as adults, Loyola offers its students the Loyola Work Experience Program (LWEP), the first program of its kind in the metro Detroit area. As a component of our academic program, LWEP, now in its 14th year, gives each student the opportunity to learn personal and professional skills in a real-world workplace environment while assuming part of the financial responsibility for their own education. Juniors and seniors work one day each week plus one Friday per month in entry-level positions at law and accounting firms, manufacturing companies, health-care providers, and other service providers.

Loyola senior valedictorian, Lavell Massey, completed his second LWEP year working at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He reflects: “Working at Beaumont has been a great experience for me because I want to be a doctor. It’s helped me to further explore the medical field, and I’ve learned how to deal with patients on a regular basis who have an array of personalities. I’ve also learned how to be more social with others. I hope to leave my mark at Beaumont and be remembered as hardworking, relatable and dedicated.”

Blue Blazer Project (BBP) Update What to do when 100+ navy sport coats make their way into the Resource Closet? Why, design a patch, have them sewn on each blazer, and create an inventory system to account for all of them, of course…Whew! The Resource Class has been busy!

While we appreciate every blue blazer donation, we would be remiss not to mention three groups that have gone above and beyond our wildest dreams in making this project successful. First, Joanna, Walt, and the folks at St. Philomena Catholic Parish in Detroit (where Fr. Mark often celebrates weekend Mass) who really helped us get this project off the ground—we cannot thank them enough!

Next is Mike Maher, a frequent visitor to the Resource Closet who read about the BBP in our Landmark and decided to make it a team effort with friends and family. Mike and his “Catholic Leaguer” cronies (all hailing from Br. Rice, Catholic Central, Shrine, and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) have made finding blue blazers a priority, especially those hard-to-find football-offensive-line sizes. Joining the effort is Mike’s wife, Jeanette, who sews the Loyola patches onto the blazers that Mike and his friends procure. Thank you to Mike and the ‘Catholic Leaguers’ for being on the hunt and to Jeanette for sharing her talents to benefit the young men of Loyola!

Finally, a huge shout-out of appreciation goes to Heidi Kapousis and her staff at The Stitch Alterations in Shelby Township, MI. With assistance from our partnership with the Ford Diversity Council, we connected with The Stitch who donated its services by sewing the patches onto our blazers. Over 100 sport coats later (and one dog sweater), The Stitch has sewn its way into the Loyola family, and we could not be more grateful. The Stitch’s service to BBP is ongoing, so keep those blazers coming!

Loyola Remembers…

Harry Lomason

Harry was part of the Loyola family from the early days, serving on our Board from 1993 to 2015.

He supported the school in many ways including cheering on our Bulldogs no matter what the weather.

With his trusty golf umbrella, a big, warm blanket, and his bright-yellow-Kettering cushion, Harry could be seen sitting alongside his good buddy, Dan Kehoe (who also sat on a comfy Kettering cushion, compliments of Harry). Harry was so very proud when the Bulldogs won their first State championship in 2014. A lasting memory of Harry is the lifelike bulldog he and his wife Mary Alice purchased for former president, Fr. Dave Mastrangelo, SJ, that to this day still startles visitors to the Office of the President.

Tom McNamara

Tom knew a good thing when he saw it and gave it his all. In the later years of his life, Tom came to love Loyola High School and our young men.

Through the Welch Memorial Dinner, Tom and his friends and family directed resources to Loyola and to the Detroit-Mercy women’s athletic teams.

During a visit to Loyola, Tom found a way to honor his beloved wife Arvie, someone who loved gathering people together, especially in the kitchen.

With a gift from Tom in his wife’s memory, we will begin renovating our cafeteria and expanding our kitchen to serve many generations of Bulldogs to come.

Harvey Rouleau

Harvey Rouleau, a graduate of the class of 1944 from St. Francis de Sales Catholic School (where Loyola now resides), connected with Loyola late in his life. Through an invitation to one of his daughters, Harve showed up at the school with his wife, four daughters (of nine children), and one grandson for a tour. Harve was able to fill Fr. Mark in on a good chunk of history about the school and the neighborhood. After graduating from St. Francis, he entered the military and then graduated from the University of Detroit on the GI Bill. As a gift to Loyola, his nine children pitched in to freshen up the Loyola courtyard by providing us with a new bench and picnic table—we thank the Rouleau family (and the cookies!) for all of their support.

Al Buchanan

Al had a passion for Loyola that he shared with his wife Judy. They were faithful supporters of the Loyola mission for many years. Former residents of Grosse Pointe Park, they relocated to Bonita Springs, FL, where they kept up with Loyola when Fr. Mark made his yearly jaunt to Florida. Always in attendance at the mass and brunch, Al and Judy were quick to inquire about the young men of Loyola and to encourage Fr. Mark to keep those Bulldogs moving forward.

Patricia Donaldson

Even during her time in hospice, Pat continued to be interested in the young men of Loyola. At her last visit to Loyola, she enjoyed a Big Mac (her request) with Chris, the most recent student she sponsored through the Rev. Joseph O. Schell, S.J., Scholarship. Pat established that scholarship to support a young man each year who showed great promise as a student and as a person, while carrying on the legacy of excellence in education espoused

by Fr. Schell. Pat and her husband Bruce had an enthusiasm for the mission of Loyola that grew out of their many Jesuit connections, especially at John Carroll University, and their interest in helping others who in turn would reach out to those in need.

Cheryl Montgomery

After her three sons graduated from Loyola, Cheryl joined our staff and then proceeded to mother many a Bulldog (as well as staff members). If you needed something to get done at Loyola, Cheryl certainly was a good person to ask…but you had to let her do it her way—things got done, and they got done right.

From coordinating the student raffle at the Walkathon, to concessions at many a Bulldog athletic event, to keeping things moving in the Business Office, and coordinating meals for staff meetings, Cheryl could be counted on day in and day out. We just had to remember not leave dishes in the sink or there would be more than a note coming our way! Cheryl, we miss you every day!
