about the grand opening

As we celebrate the completion of Loyola’s $75 million Second Century Campaign—–and soon, the Fall 2022 opening of our new Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Leemputte Family Theater, we will also be marking another significant milestone: a change in Loyola’s leadership. My Jesuit brother, Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, will take over as Loyola’s ninth president this July. I am so grateful to our families, faculty and staff, alumni, benefactors and board members. Together, we have built on the great legacies of those who came before us and accomplished so much over the past 13 years. We have worked diligently to transform Loyola Academy into a vibrant faith and education center for the 21st century and strengthen the Catholic and Jesuit identity of the school by enhancing the formation of our students, faculty and staff and parents in our faith tradition. Our benefactors have contributed more than $117.2 million dollars to support our mission of educating young people. Thanks to their generosity, we have turned priorities in our strategic vision into realities. We have upgraded our science labs, built the new John D. Norcross ’54 Aquatic Center and the Mary and L. Robert ’62 Pasquesi Piazza. Loyola’s Second Century Campaign has exceeded its fundraising goal of $75 million by nearly $1 million,

and we have awarded $51.9 million in tuition assistance to 6,759 students. During the global pandemic, thanks to our 46-member COVID-19 recovery team, the commitment of our faculty and staff and the support of our students and their families, we have successfully charted a path forward to ensure uninterrupted learning at Loyola Academy. And soon, the Loyola community will celebrate the grand opening of a new center for the performing arts. Loyola Academy will reap the myriad benefits of your commitment to Jesuit education for years and decades to come. I am excited about the next turn in my pilgrimage as the next pastor of Old St. Patrick’s Church, which I will begin this summer. But, I will miss my daily dose of energy from our students and the faculty and staff who show them in their actions and deeds what it means to be women and men for others in the Jesuit educational tradition. Know that you are, and always will be, in my prayers.

PRESIDENT’S Message

THE YEAR 2022 is sure to go down in Loyola Academy history as a momentous one.

In Christ,

Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ President

‘‘

I am tremendously excited to join Loyola Academy in its mission of serving Chicagoland and the world.

‘‘

Father Ostdiek, a native of Dayton, Ohio, and ever the lifelong learner, holds several advanced degrees. After studying mechanical engineering and English as an undergraduate at the University of Dayton, he earned graduate degrees in English from Pennsylvania State University, philosophy from Fordham University, theology and scripture from Boston College of Theology and Ministry, educational policy and management from Harvard Graduate School of Education and, most recently, an MPA from Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He entered the Jesuits in 2008, teaching physics, coaching and moderating ministry activities and clubs at several Jesuit schools, including Loyola. He was ordained in 2019. He has served as a parish priest and prison minister. Currently, he is an administrator at Brebeuf Jesuit in Indianapolis and serves on the Boards of Loyola Academy and St. Xavier in Cincinnati. Prior to joining the Jesuits, Father Ostdiek was a member of the United States Navy for 12 years, where he served on a variety of ships, including as a navigation instructor; a reactor training assistant responsible for the training of a 450-person department on a nuclear power plant; and an executive officer and navigator second in command overseeing an 80-person crew that was deployed twice to the Arabian Gulf. “I am tremendously excited to join Loyola Academy in its mission of serving Chicagoland and the world,” states Father Ostdiek. “Loyola is a school with incredible students, a tremendously talented and caring faculty and staff who show daily their dedication to the school’s mission of forming women and men for others in service to the Church and the world and an amazing community. I am humbled and honored to be chosen to serve them in turn.” 4

President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, celebrates with Mr. and Mrs. L. Robert Pasquesi ’62 at the blessing of the Pasquesi Piazza in June 2021. The Pasquesis contributed major gifts to Loyola’s new Center for the Performing Arts Center to name the piazza.

Loyola Academy Changed My Life Mary and L. Robert Pasquesi ’62 Name the Pasquesi Piazza

W

HEN L. Robert Pasquesi ’62 became a Rambler, he knew his life would never be the same. “From the moment I stepped foot on campus, my eyes were opened to academics, responsibility, discipline and care for others,” Bob shared. Bob and Mary’s extended family have a rich history with Loyola. Many members from both of their families can be counted as alumni, and one of the Pasquesis’ cousins was even a physics teacher at Loyola for over 20 years. They were very proud to pass on the Loyola tradition to their sons, Robert J. Pasquesi ’94 and James Pasquesi ’00. In addition, Bob was a member of the Board of Trustees for six years. So it was no surprise that Bob and Mary decided to

make a transformative gift to name the recently built piazza, “The Mary and L. Robert ’62 Pasquesi Piazza.” This gift has the added impact of significantly supporting the Leemputte Family Theater currently under construction. “Supporting Loyola was an easy decision,” Bob said. “LA has always been a major influence in my life.” The Pasquesis chose to make their gift over several years combined with a bequest. “The process was very simple,” Bob said. “For decades, we have been generous supporters of Loyola. What started when I was a student has stayed with me ever since. I hope our gift will not only help the school but also change the lives of students in need. There is nothing more satisfying. After all, Loyola changed my life.” 4

Loyola Academy Unveils Fallen Soldiers’ and Veterans’ Memorial Honoring alumni who gave their lives in service to their country

L

OYOLA ACADEMY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE the installation of its Fallen Soldiers’ and Veterans’ Memorial dedicated to the memory of the over 50 Rambler alumni, from the Classes of 1915 to 1968, who died in service to their country during WWI, WW2 and the Vietnam War. The memorial is located prominently in the Foley-O’Donnell Athletic Commons, across from the concession stand in Sachs Stadium. “This initiative will bring to the forefront the bravery of Loyola Academy’s alumni service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” notes Vice President of Advancement Robert O. Miller. “This space pays tribute and honors the alumni whose lives truly embody what it means to be women and men for others.” An unveiling event with a memorial blessing is planned for May 2022. Watch your email for details. 4 SPRING 2022
