When I was asked to write a forward to this new brochure celebrating Folk and Roots music at Lowther Pavilion my mind was taken back to how important this style of music has been in the whole development of talent over the last sixty years. From Bob Dylan’s electrification of Folk at the now famous concert in Manchester to modern folk heroes such as Passenger, Frank Turner and Laura Marling.

At one time the British Folk scene saw musicians travel the UK from town to town composing as they went. An example of this was Paul Simon’s Homeward Bound written at Widnes railway station. So by Lowther developing itself as part of the touring circuit we are wanting to be in the centre of a growing resurgence.

Some of the artists booked you will instantly recognise and hum along to tunes regularly played on the radio, but there are also emerging talents who you will have the opportunity of seeing before they become a household name. All we ask is that you immerse yourself in the experience of Live music and join us on this journey.

I look forward to welcoming you to Lowther and seeing you at our Live music events.

Emily Portman is the 2013 holder of the BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best

Original Song; an accolade which reflects her power to lure listeners into a complex and darkly surreal netherworld, conjuring a dark and brooding realm. Her ethereal voice belies a world of dark storytelling, cruel deeds and sordid city landscapes, part inspired by traditional balladry and part by rich literary sources, from the myth of Leda and the Swan to the magical realism of Angela Carter.

Emily’s most recent album Coracle is her most ambitious yet, scaling new creative heights. Moving deftly between bare-boned tales of metamorphosis and songs brimful with fragile life, Coracle reinforces Emily’s growing reputation as a dazzlingly original singer and songwriter. Her first entirely self-penned album, Coracle, subtly weaves together themes from myth and folklore with personal reflections on motherhood and bereavement.

“Entrancing and unsettling. A marvelous, original work.”

- Observer

“A tribute to her powerful imagination.”

- Living Tradition

“Spooky and surreal.”

- Guardian

Described by Folk Radio UK as “weaving an especially compelling magic”, and “showing British acoustic music in its best possible light”, Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie make music that is animated by lyrical songwriting, fine fingerstyle guitar playing, multi-instrumental musicianship and “the glorious tones of their blood harmony” (Sam Lee).

Brothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. The music comes to them most strongly when walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments which remains a regular practice for them. This spirit is channeled into their live performances which have a rare and intimate energy, both ethereal and earthy, romantic and radical.

“Anyone who has seen the brothers live will surely attest that it is an experience that will stay with you. There is a feeling of warmth that exudes from them and affects everyone in the room”

- Folk London

Maddy and Rose-Ellen have taught vocal technique and song together for over fifteen years, leading weekend-long courses throughout the year at their voice studio retreat Stones Barn in Cumberland. They love to sing harmony together and so have re-imagined some of their own compositions, especially those originally created for voices, into four parts for the band to perform.

The band's sound is based around their four part harmony along with virtuosic viola playing which goes from dream-like wistfulness all the way through to thick, textured rhythmic crunch. This works in a powerful tandem with Andrew's extraordinarily intuitive guitar skills, creating wide landscapes of drone, arpeggio and full-tilt riffs.

The themes they most often gravitate towards are three-fold. Firstly, Border Ballads and songs about the Border Reivers based on stories and traditions from the areas they live in Cumberland. Secondly, songs from a female perspective, often focusing on encouraging and giving voice to those movements which chime for equality. Thirdly, a universal topic; the human condition. Songs that we can all relate to aspects of, about love, family and our world.
