Emily Portman is the 2013 holder of the BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Original Song; an accolade which reflects her power to lure listeners into a complex and darkly surreal netherworld, conjuring a dark and brooding realm. Her ethereal voice belies a world of dark storytelling, cruel deeds and sordid city landscapes, part inspired by traditional balladry and part by rich literary sources. Her first entirely self-penned album, Coracle, subtly weaves together themes from myth and folklore with personal reflections on motherhood and bereavement. ‘Entrancing and unsettling. A marvellous, original work.’ -Observer

MONDAY 11 MARCH AT 7.30PM

Brothers James and Sam Gillespie found their sound growing up in the fells and valleys of Northumberland, their songs often describing relationships with wild places and the experience of finding oneself in a world alive with soul. Described by Folk Radio UK as ‘weaving an especially compelling magic’, and 'showing British acoustic music in its best possible light’, Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie make music that is animated by lyrical songwriting, fine fingerstyle guitar playing, multi-instrumental musicianship and ‘the glorious tones of their blood harmony’ -Sam Lee

Maddy Prior and Rose-Ellen Kemp (her daughter and fellow singing teacher) are embarking on some shows around the UK joined by musicians Andrew Sinclair (Steeleye Span guitarist) and Ruth Elder (viola and piano). The band's sound is based around their four part harmony along with virtuosic viola playing which goes from dream-like wistfulness all the way through to thick, textured rhythmic crunch. The performance is all at once harmonically impressive and challenging, entertaining, uplifting and light-hearted, thoughtful and eclectic.

Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements. ‘One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.’ -RnR Magazine

SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER AT 7.30PM
