what’s new?

Dear readers, friends and partners, We are very happy and proud to present to you this edition of our newspaper under the new title of what’s new?.

So, what is new? That is the question we often ask ourselves at the Innovationsdorf Bern and to our partners to get a sense of what is growing and emerging in ourselves and in our teams, companies and communities. What do we mean by new? The new in our lives and businesses can be an expression of life, like a flower or a tree that is growing and sprouting leaves, blossoms, fruits and new branches.

We are interested in the new because we see it as a way of celebrating the hunger of growing towards the light. We want to create teams and organizations that are strong and healthy, so we can promote sustainable whole services and products to our partners.

What’s new? We want to create a new sharing platform for your stories and our stories. Stories of the new things that make us feel e ­ xcited, vital and enthusiastic for what is growing and what we are growing every day.

I see it as a gardeners’ journal where we give each other updates on new shifts and growth. The ­garden here is our world and our lives in relation with all the living beings in this Universe. What wants to emerge now – in businesses, in education, in communities, in all aspects of society? What is each of us seeing? How do we see this is bringing newness and innovation as well as inviting combinations of already existing things? How can we learn from other disciplines and fields of life for our own growth and s­ uccess? How can we collaborate in new ways that feel inspiring to you and to me?

And what are the things we want to shift and change?

Our intention with “what’s new?” is to initiate more conversation and networking activity around what we believe is meaningful in this life right now. What do we need and want? What are we hungry for?

Sometimes, we may also recognize that “what’s new?” will help us to re-discover something old, to see an ancient wisdom or to re-use something that we have created earlier. With “what’s new?” we want to foster our own curiosity to see what we feel is meaningful, powerful, what is bringing more balance and wholeness, more vitality and health to all aspects of our lives. Where is the life force?

What are the dreams we can see at this moment in time? What do we want to grow on our journey? “what’s new?” is also a playground for all of us. On paper and online. What is new for you? What is new for your partners? Are you up for the adventure of sharing and exploring more and with us?

We are.

• Adam & Eva, eine Clown- und Theatergruppe.

• Council Guides FL Switzerland bietet als Verein eine gut 2-jährige Weiterbildung an, um von uraltem Wissen der Natur aus Nordamerika mit WhiteEagle Woman aus New Mexico/USA zu lernen, wie wir Entscheidungen als ganzer Stamm treffen können, ohne dass jemand andere dominiert.

Erzähl uns, was du heute hier machst?

Ich mache Videoproduktionen, meist für Firmen und Organisationen, die einen Webauftritt planen oder den bestehenden aufpeppen wollen. Mein Job ist es, die Firma, ihre Produkte und Ideen vorzustellen und leicht verständlich zu erklären. Daneben dokumentiere ich auch oft Events und Konferenzen, mache Interviews und schaffe so eine Zusammenfassung für wichtige Anlässe.

Was machst du heute gerade?

Ich setze gestalterische Projekte um. Das heisst, ich suche Projekte und PartnerInnen, gleise ein Projekt auf und realisiere es. Zum Beispiel habe ich gerade 4 intensive Tage mit Ed zusammen eine 3-D-Visualisierung einer Uhr für eine Uhren­firma gemacht. Mit unserer Visualisierung kann die Unternehmung ihr Produkt nun leichter anpreisen und verkaufen. Ich arbeite oft am Weekend hier, weil ich dann Ruhe habe und den Kopf frei für neue Ideen.

Was hat dich hier ins Innovationsdorf gebracht?

Die coolen Leute, die Atmosphäre und der Austausch unter­ einander. Ok, vielleicht könnte ich statt cool auch ­sagen: die kreativen und innovativen Leute (grinst).

Wovon träumst du?

Von einem coolen Media-Kollektiv, einem inspirierenden Team zum Zusammenarbeiten. Dazu suche ich interes­ sierte GrafikerInnen, WebpublisherInnen, FotografInnen, Werbe-Menschen, TexterInnen und TontechnikerInnen.

Welches deiner Filmprojekte hat dir am meisten Spass ­gemacht?

Im 2014 der Werbeclip für die swisstopo. Dieser vermischt Film und Animation, das finde ich immer besonders spannend. Und natürlich meinen 50min Spielfilm “Fritz Blitz”, den wir über Jahre hinweg gedreht und bearbeitet haben.

Vor 2 Jahren war die Première. Das war ein Highlight!

Was hat dich hierher gebracht oder gezogen?

Eigentlich kam das via changels, als ich meine letzte Anstellung aufhörte und mich nach neuen Optionen umschaute.

Da gab mir jemand den Tipp, mich doch mal bei changels zu melden. Auf der Webseite sah ich dann, dass sie hier ein Innovationsdorf mit co-working lancieren und meldete mich sofort. Bereits als mir Anja unten die Türe öffnete, wusste ich: GENAU SO habe ich mir das vorgestellt und ich bin hier goldrichtig. Das Innovationsdorf ist für mich sehr inspirierend. Es erinnert mich stark an die Kunsti Luzern, die mir sehr gefallen hat. Und ich komme auch gerne hierher, wenn ich weiter an Ideen herumspinnen will. Das kann ich hier mit all diesen Freigeistern sehr gut. Ich liebe es, dass ich hier herausgefordert werde und dass wir ein starkes Miteinander-Gefühl entwickeln und zusammenarbeiten. So profitiere ich sehr von der Zusammenarbeit hier im Haus.

Es gibt keine Ellbogen-Konkurrenz hier.

Wovon träumst du?

Ich freue mich, wenn meine Firma nun wächst. Nach dem Start als One-Woman-Show möchte ich nun weiterkommen, mehr und kontinuierlich mit andern zusammenarbeiten, grosser warden und hier bleiben.

Workshop-Raum im Innovationsdorf

Lora Slovak, Geschäftsführerin Verein Drops Community Progress Was machst du heute gerade?

Heute mache ich gerade die Buchhaltung für Drops Libanon, zusammen mit meiner Kollegin aus Libanon – und hier kommt das Spannende: Das tägliche Miteinander und auch Konfrontation mit einer andern Kultur. Verstehen wir einander? Was meinst du? Siehst du, was ich meine?

Brauchen Sie einen schönen, angenehmen und inspirie­ renden Workshop-Raum für eine Sitzung mit dem Vorstand, ein Seminar mit KundInnen oder ein Training für Ihre Mitarbeitenden?

Im Libanon organisieren wir Berufsausbildungen für Jugend­liche aus zwei palästinensischen Flüchtlingslagern.

Nach einem Jahr Ausbildung finden sie in der Regel dann Arbeit. Wir schaffen also eigentlich Perspektiven. Wir ­machen auch Diversity Trainings hier in der Schweiz und natürlich im Libanon für die jungen Berufsleute, die wir ausbilden. Dabei geht es um die Fähigkeiten, mit Konflikten in der Kommunikation gut umzugehen. Aber auch psychologische Betreuung ist Teil unseres Angebots: Die Herausforderung mit Menschen zu arbeiten, die ich noch nicht physisch gesehen habe, und dass wir uns trotzdem nach Jahren sehr gut verstehen.

Was hat dich hierher gebracht?

Mir gefällt die Atmosphäre hier, sie entspricht mir sehr. Ich liebe das Chaos und diesen Raum für Kreativität, den wir hier automatisch bekommen. Und die Menschen hier gefallen mir. Ich arbeite nun bereits seit 3,5 Jahren im coworking mit changels und dem Innovationsdorf zusammen. Andere Büros habe ich oft als steril erlebt, hier ist es lebendig. Und ich erhalte hier auch sehr viele Impulse von ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen mit ganz verschiedenen Berufshintergründen. Zum Beispiel habe ich von meinen Kollegen hier Photoshop kennengelernt. Und ich fühle mich hier JUNG – dies vor allem dank den StudentInnen der KaosPiloten, mit denen wir oft herumblödeln können.

Das macht Spass und ich kann auch fliegen ;-)

Dann könnten Sie bei uns changels im Innovationsdorf gut liegen. Wir haben verschiedene Sitzungs- und grössere Workshopräume, die wir Ihnen gern für Anlässe und Veranstaltungen vermieten. Als Moderatorinnen und Moderatoren von Trainings und Teamentwicklungs-Workshops wissen wir, dass ein ­ gutes Ambiente und Top-Material matchentscheidend für e ­ inen guten Anlass sind. Entsprechend haben wir unsere ­Räume eingerichtet: So richtig einladend zum Arbeiten mit v­ erschiedensten Flipcharts, Pinnwänden und Gruppen-­Arbeitsmöglichkeiten, und selbst­verständlich auch mit Tischtennis-Tisch, Kaffee-­Bistro und feiner Verpflegung. Wir sind gerne GastgeberInnen und freuen uns auf Sie und Ihre Gruppe!

What is

For those who have known us over the last few years, it may have looked like we changels put all our energy into the KaosPilots, the Council Guide Training in Switzerland and the building up of the Innovationsdorf Bern. And to some degree that is true: We have been putting a lot of attention, time and resources into giving birth to these ­ three big babies here in Bern.

After the redesign of our company in 2009 and 2010, with Ursula Maerz and Martina Straub, my younger sister, ­taking over the steering of changels during my 9 months of ­sabbatical, the start of the KaosPilots has brought a lot of shifts and changes into our days. And when the first 15 KaosPilot students started their studies in October 2012 the routines changed once again. With a start-up like this new and alternative business school for changemakers and responsible entrepreneurs in all fields, a new wind of internationality came into our lives.

From our experience as coaches, consultants and facilita­ tors, having our own projects where we can live our dreams of meeting people where they are at, establishing and co-­creating an atmosphere of deep trust and liveliness, of crea­tivity and the spirit of limitless potential, was and still is a great challenge. At the same time it is perfect: ­because we need to live all we believe in. Here is where the ­rubber hits the road. It demands all of us to be on our toes, ­creating clear intention, dreaming big even when the ­obstacles are great and moving in one direction as a flock of birds. Working so closely with young entrepreneurs and leaders is inspiring, it is fun and it is also tough.

Most of our team and our network partners have supported us in amazing ways in this pioneering adventure. To this day

there is little support from foundations or sponsors available, and the KaosPilots school is still on the way to make it as a financially profitable educational business. And the way is long, has ups and downs, twists and turns that are unexpected and beautifully surprising. While we now have 10 part time staff members we are still fighting for visas both for students from Non-Schengen countries, as well as getting a working permit for one of our colleagues from the US to be here with us. We have grown from being 5 people to being a learning and innovation community of 65 people within 2 years. And we are learning to communicate and move in these new ways together.

So what is new at changels? All that is in this newspaper AND we are growing our team and our garden. We are still coaching inspiring people in all areas of business and other organizations, schools, hospitals and from all angles of the hierarchical pyramids. Mostly it is about people who are eager to start living their own dreams – either in existing companies or more often outside. We encourage and guide people to explore all possibilities and then make bold moves to inspire themselves and the world around them.

We still facilitate large group conferences for example with Open Spaces, World Cafés, and for the last years more and more Wisdom Councils and Decision Making Councils, introducing the Delicate Lodge Teachings into the business world to create more wholeness and sustainable structures.

And we are asked to be sparring partners in leadership development, designing training programs, strengthening organizational cultures for better co-operation or to help resolve conflicts.

We have also started our own one year mastery program for responsible entrepreneurs, called NEW BUSINESS, with our first 7 participants in 2014. The second training course will start in May 2015 with an introduction module.

We want to keep trying things out… be that the Urban Safari, new formats for storytelling with KaosX and Open Door events, new partnerships with cities and organizations in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Bulgaria, Romania, the US and South Africa.

We have made it a habit to share the good stories we experience and hear. We are learning to come out of the mode of being very creative in short term advertisement for events and move into more long term planning with the initiatives we are working and playing with. We constantly want to become better and grow, as individuals and as a collective.

We are happy to welcome Trix Angst on board, both as coach and facilitator with her long experience in assessments, life- and career-coachings and communication strategies for internal change processes. Trix has been in our network since 2000 and supported our community develop­ment project in the Romanian small town of Covasna. She has now taken over the hat of Head of Communications for changels, the Innovationsdorf and the KaosPilots, as we can see that we need more integrative choreographing and enhancing of communication with being so many community members in here.

bei dir Matti Straub-Fischer?

Chief Changel, Coach, Moderator, Schulleiter Kaos­ Piloten Schweiz, Team Leader SUI1, Council ­ Guide, Helikopter­ pilot: Matti Straub-Fischer ist oft auf ­Achse, um seine diversen Funktionen, Aufgaben und Leidenschaften unter einen Hut zu bekommen. Das Gespräch zur Frage “What’s new bei dir, Matti?“ fand deshalb über Funk mit ihm statt.

und helfen nötige Klarheit für nächste Schritte zu schaffen. Diese intensiven Wochen mit unseren KaosPilotInnen sind für mich wichtige Zeitinseln, um bedeutsamen Fragen nachgehen, einander offen und ehrlich unsere Beobachtungen und Überlegungen mitzuteilen und individuell und gemeinsam Verantwortung für die nächsten Schritte zu übernehmen. Das fühlt sich stark an.

Tower an Pilot Matti: Wohin geht deine aktuelle Reise?

Matti an Tower: Zurzeit bin ich auf der Schweibenalp hoch über dem Brienzersee. Hier bereite ich gemeinsam mit zwei anderen Trainern und WhiteEagle Woman aus New Mexico, USA, die nächste Woche des Council Guide Trainings mit vielen KaosPiloten-Studierenden aus dem Team 2 vor.

Was ist neu dort?

Wir haben mit dem Council Guide Training ein uraltes Persönlichkeitsentwicklungs- und Führungstraining in die KaosPiloten-Ausbildung integriert. Das Council Guide ­Training hat seine Wurzeln in der Maya- und indianischen Kultur in Mittel- und Nordamerika. Leitfragen sind: Wie treffen wir Entscheidungen, hinter denen wir ALLE stehen können? Wie können wir Gespräche führen, ohne dass jemand andere dominiert? Obwohl wir in der Schweiz ein altes Verständnis von Demokratie haben, spüre ich immer wieder, dass diese Art, einander wirklich zuzuhören auch für uns Neuland ist. Es geht ums Zuhören, ohne bereits zu überlegen, was ich als nächstes sage oder wie ich k­ ontere oder wie ich recht haben kann. Das klingt sehr einfach, aber ich erlebe oft erstaunte Gesichter, wenn BesucherInnen an der KaosPiloten-Schule sehen, dass wir das wirklich leben und diese Gesprächsform mit changels auch in den Businesskontext transferieren.

Und was ist der Fokus dieser Woche auf der ­Schweibenalp?

Wie kann ich für mich wichtige Anliegen und Methoden an eine Gruppe von Menschen vermitteln, die zum ersten Mal in einem solchen Training ist? Wie nutze ich dazu alle ­meine Talente und Fähigkeiten? Wie arbeite ich dafür optimal mit meinem Team zusammen, damit das ganze Training in ­einem Fluss daherkommt? Dazu sind wir so viel wie möglich draussen in der Natur, sitzen am Feuer zusammen und reflektieren, was wir über die letzten Monate gelernt haben und welche Träume wir fürs nächste Jahr hören und sehen.

Ich freue mich jedes Mal wie ein kleines Kind, hier oben zu sein und gemeinsam wichtige Aspekte zu entdecken.

Gleichzeitig nähren diese Trainingswochen den Teamspirit

Und ich weiss nicht, ob das neu ist, aber wir merken ­unter uns selber, je länger wir nun diese Werkzeuge und

Metho­den für uns selber anwenden und leben, wie uns die Zusammen­arbeit immer leichter fällt, wie wir mehr E ­ rfolg haben, und auch knifflige Herausforderungen ­ meistern können. Und was mich besonders freut, nach einigen ­ ­Jahren sehe ich, wie die ganze Zusammenarbeit einfach viel mehr Spass macht und Energie gibt. Das ist neu.

Für welche Leute könnte das interessant sein?

Ich glaube, das ist für viele Leute in unserem Umfeld spannend − ob private FreundInnen, GeschäftspartnerInnen oder KundInnen. In den Coachings und Workshops, die ich für Unternehmen, Non-Profit-Organisationen und Verwaltungen moderiere, kommt meist sehr deutlich zum Ausdruck, dass vieles nicht mehr in Balance ist: auf der persönlichen Ebene, in den Beziehungen zu PartnerInnen, Kindern, Eltern, aber auch in den Beziehungen zu KundInnen und Vorgesetzten, Teams und Nachbarn. Es geht meistens um die Frage: Was brauche ich, um das Gefühl zu ­haben, hier was Sinnvolles beitragen zu können?

In den letzten Jahren gab es von den changels und von dir eine Neuerung nach der anderen. Bitte gib uns eine Zusam­ menfassung.

Wir changels sind seit meiner Auszeit in einer neuen Wachstumsphase. Mein neunmonatiges Sabbatical 2010 bot mir die Gelegenheit, nach 14 Jahren als Coach und Berater heraus­zufinden, wo ich künftig meine Energie investieren will. Daraufhin haben wir gemeinsam die Kaos­ Piloten-Schule in Bern lanciert und haben damit eine neue, international ausgerichtete dreijährige Vollzeitausbildung für Change­ makers geschaffen. Das ist ein spannendes Abenteuer für unsere Studierenden und für uns selber.

Im Rahmen des Schulstarts habe ich das Council Guide ­Training in die Schweiz geholt: alle KaosPiloten-Studierenden absolvieren diese zweieinhalbjährige berufsbegleitende Ausbildung. Sie steht auch anderen InteressentInnen ­offen. Im letzten Oktober haben die ersten 17 Personen das Council Guide Training erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

Wir sind aber auch als Netzwerk gewachsen. Wir changels haben ein Innovationsdorf in Bern gestartet, mit ­ einem attrak­tiven co-working-Raum für Firmen und UnternehmerInnen aus verschiedenen Bereichen. In den alten Fabrik­ räumen an der Wylerringstrasse 36 haben wir eine per­ fekte Basis zum Wachsen und Experimentieren gefunden und beleben diese Räume laufend neu.

Daneben haben wir einen neuen Lehrgang NEW BUSINESS aufgebaut: ein praxisorientiertes Mastertraining von 10 x 3 Tagen für UnternehmerInnen und Menschen, die ihre Geschäftsidee entwickeln und erfolgreich leben möchten. Unser Fokus liegt immer wieder darauf, Träume umzusetzen und unser Netzwerk zu erweitern. Projektpartnerschaften mit drei Städten in Bulgarien, unser externes Klassenzimmer in Kapstadt für die KaosPilotInnen und verschiedene weitere PartnerInnen gehören zu unserer lebendigen Community. Das Innovationsdorf Bern bietet einen inspirierenden Rahmen mit Support und Ping-PongPartnerInnen für alle, die dies brauchen.

Für Aussenstehende ist das Netzwerk nicht einfach zu überblicken. Was verbindet all diese Angebote? Gibt es ­einen inneren Zusammenhang?

Im Zentrum stehen sicher unsere eigenen Träume von einer starken Gemeinschaft: Wie können wir zusammenleben und -arbeiten, so dass wir unsere Talente wirklich nutzen, unsere Stimmen und Anliegen gehört werden, und wir gemeinsam Sinn stiften und neue Brücken zwischen Arbeit und unseren Familien und FreundInnen bauen? Wie können wir uns befreien von Glaubenssätzen und Dingen, die uns nicht mehr weiterwachsen lassen? Wie können wir Vielfalt leben und doch gemeinsam an einem Strick ziehen, um wirksam vorwärts zu kommen? Wir wollen eine Balance finden und einen Weg entwickeln, wie wir mit anderen Menschen und mit allen Lebewesen auf diesem Planeten friedlich und mit Lebenslust stark weiterwachsen können.

Dieses Lustvolle am Zusammenarbeiten und die Freude an der Vielfalt von Innovationen, von neuen essenziellen Entwicklungen, die ist wohl allen unserm Tun gemeinsam ... (schmunzelt).

Wenn du von dort oben, wo du gerade bist, auf dieses Netzwerk hinunter schaust: Was siehst du?

Was mich wohl am meisten freut, sind die Leute hier... unsere KaosPiloten, unser Team von rund zehn Mitarbeitenden bei den KaosPiloten und changels, unsere Innovationsdorf-MitbewohnerInnen, die NEW BUSINESS-Teilnehmenden und unsere PartnerInnen in Bern, in der Schweiz und weltweit. Zu erleben, wie jede und jeder immer wieder neu anpackt und sich einbringt, direkt und klar auch die schwierigen Themen der Zusammenarbeit und des Zusammenlebens anspricht, bringt mich jeden Tag zum Strahlen.

Zu sehen und zu spüren, wie Menschen hungrig danach sind, zu lernen und weiterzuwachsen, Unangenehmes anzu­sprechen, ohne zu verurteilen, sondern einfach, um gemeinsam weiterzukommen, freut mich. Wir wachsen langsam, Schritt für Schritt. Und ich sehe je länger, desto mehr den Wert dieser Langsamkeit, die − so g ­ laube ich − allen nachhaltigen Entwicklungen eigen ist.

Wir stehen aber auch vor Herausforderungen: finanzielle Unterstützung für unsere KaosPiloten-Schule zu finden, damit wir mehr Stipendien für Studierende aus Südafrika finanzieren können; mehr spannende Projektaufträge für unsere Studierendenteams zu finden; Visas zu organisieren für Studierende, die nicht aus dem Schengenraum kommen ... . Wir sind als Schule ein Start-up und vieles läuft noch harzig. Das bringt uns immer wieder in heikle finanzielle Situationen. Da braucht es viel Vertrauen, k­ lare Abmach­ ungen untereinander und immer wieder krea­tive Ideen, um uns diesen Herausforderungen zu stellen.

Was motiviert dich, dir immer wieder neue Angebote aus­ zudenken? Was treibt dich an?

Hmmm ... gute Frage. Ich bin einfach neugierig und hungrig drauf, Anliegen und Teams weiterzubringen. Ich habe grosse Freude an Durchbrüchen, wenn es uns gelingt, gemein­ sam neue Dinge zu entwickeln, Mutanfälle zu nutzen, um Varianten zu finden, die uns gemeinsam mehr Energie ­geben für die Zusammenarbeit und das Zusammenspiel

über bisherige Grenzen hinaus. Ich freue mich immer wieder zu erfahren, wo Menschen stehen, was sie brauchen und wovon sie träumen. Am liebsten wirke ich an gemeinsamen Träumen mit, um zusammen weiterzukommen und bessere Lösungen zu entwickeln, mehr Ruhe, mehr Flow und bessere, nachhaltige Resultate zu erreichen. Und immer, wenn ich Menschen um mich herum so richtig ­ strahlen sehe, dann weiss ich, dass wir auf Kurs sind.

Ist denn neu immer auch gleich besser?

Jein ... Oft entwickeln wir Lösungen und Angebote, die wir bald wieder verändern müssen, weil wir merken, dass ­diese Formen uns nicht wirklich in der gewünschten Art und Weise vorwärts bringen. Oder weil sie vielleicht vernünftig sind, aber keinen Spass machen. Es lohnt sich, sich immer wieder die Frage zu stellen: Was brauchen wir jetzt? ­Wohin wollen wir? Das Neue ist nicht prinzipiell besser, aber die Haltung, genau hinzuschauen und bewusst wahrzunehmen, was uns vorwärtsbringt, lohnt sich aus meiner Sicht immer. Oft sind frühere Rezepte gute Rezepte. Wir können wie DJs mit verschiedenen Musikstücken ­spielen. Denn egal, wann die Musik komponiert und gespielt ­wurde, die Frage ist: Was brauchen die jetzt hier anwesenden Menschen, um in gute Tanzstimmung zu kommen?

So wie wir dich kennen, hast du bestimmt schon wieder einige Ideen für neue Angebote. Stimmt’s?

Ja, wir designen gerade ein Online-Tool, mit dem nachhaltige Businesspläne einfacher geschrieben werden können.

Und wir planen diverse Wisdom Councils, wie wir sie im Council Guide Training lernen, für Firmen und Organisationen, Gemeinden und Städte in der Schweiz und im ­Ausland.

Mein persönliches Lieblingsprojekt wartet auf die Umsetzung: Nach Naturkatastrophen will ich mit meinem vierplätzigen Kleinhelikopter ­weltweit Support­einsätze fliegen. ­Damit ist man zum B ­ eispiel nach einem Erdbeben schneller in der Lage, Nahrungs­mittel, Medikamente und andere Hilfsmittel einzufliegen oder Fachpersonen an Einsatzorte zu bringen. Alles ist x-mal günstiger und umweltfreund­ licher als mit grossen Helikoptern, die aktuell in solchen Fällen zum Einsatz kommen. Wir nennen das Projekt “Support­Angels“ − und ich freue mich, bald Helikoptereinsätze ­dieser Art leisten zu ­können.

NEW BUSINESS is a mastery training program for sustain­able entrepreneurship by changels The first NEW BUSINESS training program is in full swing.

In September 2014, 6 courageous entrepreneurs and changemakers started this intense further education with Matti Straub-Fischer and Jørgen Smidstrup. Meeting for 3 days every month to share current challenges, learn new perspectives of how to create regenerative and sustainable business structures that are fun and refreshing for all involved and to design and plan next steps together, this brings the participants close together. Learning from the 8 directions of the Medicine Wheel has created a foundation for joyful growth and personal learning for each of the entre­preneurs. Learning to trust our own instincts and make use of all we have learnt so far in life, connecting the dots to create new meaning, has been an important part of the journey.

NEW BUSINESS #2 starts in May 2015 The next mastery training program by changels will start at the end of May with an intro-module of 3 days. Learning about the 8 directions and what they have to offer to ­create a sustainable and attractive NEW BUSINESS will be a deeper foundation for the decision to start the entire 9 x 3 days training program, beginning in September 2015. It is designed for people who want to change their world and either create their own business or transform the way collaboration looks like in their current environment.

NEW BUSINESS: Karin Ehrler

I am Thom, I’m an engineer, project leader, biker, alpinist and former software architect. My socialization took place in and around Berne, as a boy scout and with a mentally handicapped brother. I started my studies at ETH Zurich after and because of the nuclear disaster at Tschernobyl.

I am Karin, born and grown up in Switzerland. I love the variety life offers and see myself as a curious and playful treasure seeker. My career so far has been similarly colour­ ful, starting as a dental assistant, jobbing at the airport whilst running a fruit import business and then turning to a classic commercial career accompanied by part time studies in business administration. I have been working in various different industries and company sizes from IT to airline industry, to retail in food, furniture and the near food area, mainly in a procurement function for almost 12 years.

What is your NEW BUSINESS dream?

To make important projects happen, to be innovative as an entrepreneur, facilitator or project manager and bring in my whole personality for the good. I like new challenges, changes and producing great outcomes in an unconventional but sustainable way.

What has called you to the NEW BUSINESS mastery train­ ing program?

Probably my heart. I felt that I had a need to start over and do projects and business not in a over-structured and administrative way but by conviction. And I wanted to strengthen my abilities in that field. As an experienced IT project manager I know that projects are made by humans, may be (re-)defined successfully during their lifetime, and will always benefit from a vital cooperation during the project lifetime with its stakeholders.

What is your NEW BUSINESS dream?

Finding an occupation or perhaps several that are fulfilling and fun to work with. Getting to know new free-spirited methods of how I can establish change in stuck situations in my current position and also in other future occupations.

I want to create a light and experimental atmosphere, transporting my passion to others and using inspirational locations to invite people to join in and try it out.

How has this training helped you so far?

The NEW BUSINESS is a great space for me to get new tools, perspectives, and ideas, to profit from others, from the trainers, my classmates and the KaosPilots − and hopefully vice versa. And it is really a great space, making possible new experiences and motivating me to do, to try, to fail, to exercise and to succeed.

What has called you to the NEW BUSINESS mastery train­ ing program?

I was extremely curious about the model and philosophy of the KaosPilots. I heard about them for the first time about 20 years ago and ever since I have been searching for an opportunity to get in touch with that spirit in the structure of a part time study.

How has his training helped you so far?

The open atmosphere and active exchange with the other NEW BUSINESS members, the teachers and the Kaos­ Pilots have created a space for me, which has enabled me to bring my passions and dreams on a paper and create a first project out of it. The evolution from a daydreamer to a dreamer and then to an entrepreneur (one of the statements from one of our teachers).

What are you looking for now?

I am looking for new challenges and need partners and ­opportunities. Let me know!

What are you intending to offer now with your NEW ­BUSINESS? One of my projects is to build a community to facilitate the Energiewende in Wohlen and do innovative energy projects … will you join?

First of all, I have to take more time in order to realize the first project. I also feel that I need to improve my skills in ­using more of the social media tools – maybe someone could give me a crash course in learning to use them in exchange for support that I can provide?!

What are you intending to offer now with your NEW ­BUSINESS? I am offering cooking workshops for people looking for inspiration and who want to practice preparing their own food − quick, simple tasty and healthy − free from convenience. The philosophy is to touch and work with the food and experiment with tastes and ingredients and also to experience various possibilities from low carb to veggie to vegan. Most likely there are more ideas and projects to come, but I am also open to bring in my energy and life experience into other emerging businesses.

Inspiring New Business in the making NEW BUSINESS: Adrian Zimmermann

NEW BUSINESS: Roger Ziegler

Ich heisse Adrian Zimmermann und lebe mit meiner Frau und meiner Tochter in der Stadt Bern. Bern ist immer meine Heimat und mein Lebensmittelpunkt geblieben, auch wenn ich mehrfach im Ausland studiert und gearbeitet habe und immer gern und oft gereist bin. Ich habe Archäologie und Kunstgeschichte studiert. Nach der Promotion habe ich in der Archäologischen Sammlung der Universität Zürich gearbeitet. Dort betreute ich die umfangreiche Sammlung von Gipsabgüssen und wirkte in der Lehre und der Forschung mit. Als vor 16 Jahren unsere Tochter zur Welt kam, entschieden meine Frau und ich, die traditionelle Rollenteilung umzukehren. Ich wurde Hausmann.

Die Tochter so nah aufwachsen zu sehen und begleiten zu dürfen, ist etwas vom Grossartigsten, was ich in meinem Leben erfahren durfte. Dafür bin ich unendlich dankbar. Ich habe meinen Ausstieg aus der Archäologie nie bereut.

Ich heisse Roger Ziegler und wohne in Spiegel bei Bern.

Ich bin angeschwemmter Rheintaler. Ich habe eine Grundausbildung als Arzt in Humanmedizin; Weiterbildungen in Psychiatrie, Psychosomatik und Stressmedizin, Trainings und Ausbildungen in Philosophie, Mediation / Konfliktmanagement, Meditation und Kontemplation in verschiedenen ­Traditionen, Komplementärmedizin und Sterbebegleitung.

Ich arbeite aktuell als Arzt, Dozent und im Krisenmanagement von Einzelpersonen und Teams. Zudem bin ich Projektkoordinator für die Sterbebegleitung “Passing Aware”.

Wie sieht dein NEW BUSINESS Traum aus?

Ich will die Fotografie zu meinem Beruf machen und mir damit meinen Bubentraum verwirklichen. Rückblickend kann ich sagen, dass mich die Fotografie seit meiner Jugend immer und intensiv begleitet hat, gerade auch während meiner Zeit als Archäologe. In den letzten Jahren habe ich mich hin und wieder gefragt, warum ich eigentlich seinerzeit nicht Fotograf geworden bin.

Mein Traum? In einem PRESENCE_LAB – einer PräsenzWerkstatt – dieser Kunst der Begegnung auf die Spur kommen. Verschiedene Traditionen der Menschheitsgeschichte haben Wege entwickelt, diese innere Präsenz und diese angewandte Integrität stufenweise zu entfalten und im Alltag anwendbar zu machen. Ein PRESENCE_LAB will Raum anbieten, wo dieses Gewahrsein erlernt, geübt und in einen modernen Alltag übersetzt wird, wo intelligentes Gruppenarbeiten erforscht wird.

Was hat dir das Training bisher gebracht?

Natürlich haben wir in den Kursmodulen viel konkretes Wissen und hilfreiche Werkzeuge vermittelt bekommen.

Für mich ist aber wichtiger, dass durch die ganzheitliche Arbeits­ weise und den regelmässigen Austausch in der Gruppe und mit den KaospilotInnen ein Erfahrungsraum entstand, in dem ich auf spielerische Weise vieles klären und neu herausfinden konnte. Im ersten Modul hatte ich es noch kaum gewagt, meinen Berufstraum zu formulieren.

Heute habe ich angefangen, mich an den eigenen Talenten zu orientieren und mich von meinen Träumen leiten zu ­lassen.

Was hat dir das Training bisher gebracht?

Ich lerne eine Coaching-Methode kennen, die erfrischend anders ist als andere Tools, wende sie auf ein eigenes ­Projekt an und prüfe sie für mich. Wir arbeiten hier mit 8 Perspektiven, die miteinander jeden Aspekt eines lebendigen Prozesses beleuchten und somit ein organisches Wachstum einer NEW BUSINESS-Idee nachhaltig unterstützen. Wertvoll ist für mich auch die Mischung der ­Gruppe: alle kommen aus anderen Branchen, mit spannenden Erfahrungsrucksäcken. Jeder wächst und erfindet sich und ­seine Idee in eigenem Tempo, und dennoch ist es “Growth through sharing”.

Wonach suchst du gerade?

Im Moment beschäftigen mich vor allem: Wie kann ich meine reiche Bildersammlung besser strukturieren und professionell nutzbar machen? Und mit welchen BerufskollegInnen kann ich mich austauschen und vielleicht künftig bei grösseren Projekten zusammenarbeiten? Und natürlich suche ich KundInnen, mit denen ich tolle Projekte realisieren kann.

Was wirst du mit deinem NEW BUSINESS anbieten?

Fotografische Dienstleistungen, die geprägt sind von einem klaren und liebevollen Blick fürs Detail und für das, was unter der Oberfläche liegt. Wie sagte doch der Fuchs zum kleinen Prinzen: “Man sieht nur mit dem Herzen gut.“ Aufgrund meines archäologisch-kunsthistorischen Hintergrundes habe ich eine besondere Affinität zur Fotografie von Kunstobjekten, aber auch von Architektur, Interieurs und Landschaften. Es ist für mich immer wieder ein Erleb­ nis, mich im Gespräch und mit der Kamera behutsam einem Menschen zu nähern und sein Wesen zu erforschen. Ich bin für alles offen, was nicht mit einem übergrossen Material- oder Personalaufwand verbunden ist.

Wie sieht dein NEW BUSINESS Traum aus?

Sind es nicht vor allem Begegnungen mit Menschen, die uns zum Denken und Wachsen anstossen? In dem ­Moment, in dem ich jemandem ganz wach und offen begegne, gehe ich in die Bewährungsprobe. Warum haben gewisse Gespräche einen so tiefen Impact, und andere nicht? Seit Jahren fasziniert mich dieser Moment, wenn zwischen Menschen offener Austausch und Fluss stattfindet. Und genau danach suche ich: einen Moment von Präsenz zu erfahren, während dem sich diese zwischenmenschliche “Zone” öffnet und Innovation und Inspiration möglich wird.

Was wirst du mit deinem NEW BUSINESS anbieten?

Trainings- und Prozessmodule für Einzelpersonen oder Teams, wo Präsenz- und Intuitionskraft (Awareness in ­action) in modernem, schlichten Gewand, jedoch basierend auf jahrhundertelang bewährten Stufenwegen trainiert wird. So baut ein Mensch sich die “innere oder psychische Muskulatur” auf, die ihn oder sie eine Erkenntnis oder Idee organisch umsetzen und nachhaltig anwenden lässt. Diese neuen Techniken sollen nicht in einem Kurs erlernt werden, das gibt es genug. Sie sollen im Business-Meeting oder im Therapieraum erfahrbar werden und ihre Anwendbarkeit so unter Beweis stellen. “An idea or an insight has no value unless it is proven by appropriate action”, sagte ein Zenmeister.

NEW BUSINESS: Claudio Pacozzi

NEW BUSINESS: Fabian Leuthold

I’m Claudio Pacozzi. Presently I live in Boll, close to Bern.

I have been married for almost 29 years and am the ­father of two adult daughters. For almost 16 years I worked as an airline pilot. However, after about 12 years I strongly felt that it was time for a change. I had the chance to take three months unpaid leave and join the crew of a British yacht race team battling across the Atlantic ocean. After this great experience I took a degree as a Corporate Development Manager. Then I joined the Federal Office for Civil Aviation FOCA. Apart from being an inspector for flight crew training and commercial flight operations I also led the overall reorganization project of the federal office in order to become a purely process oriented organization. Finally, in 2007 I had the chance to take a management position as the manager of flight crew training at an international business aviation operator. Today I still fly a business jet and I act also as an instructor and check airman.

I am Fabian Leuthold and I live in Bern. In my teens I asked myself why all men were considered as offenders and all women as victims and why there was so much unfairness in the world. So I studied social anthropology, ecology and sociology at University of Bern, with a focus on gender studies and fair trade coffee concepts. I did an internship in institutional gender equality work and then engaged as a consultant for life domain balance in a private association.

Besides that I have been following my passion for coffee as a home roaster and certified barista, organising events and reflecting on fair trade coffee models.

What is your NEW BUSINESS dream?

My dream builds upon two visions, both of them rooted in my strong sense of justice. First I imagine a society based on diversity, where for example the categories of “men” and “women” have lost their normative significance and thus are no further source of inequalities. Second I see a future coffee value chain that is absolutely transparent and gives the farmers a chance to make a decent living. In my dream I bring my passions for consulting and for coffee together, following my visions and offering a refreshing ­ kind of services for both corporate and individual clients – with curiosity, empathy, creativity and fun!

What has called you to the NEW BUSINESS mastery ­training program?

When I met Matti, I was dreaming of a coffee roasting project and did not know how and where to begin. Some months after the first coaching session I quit my former job and headed for a professional reorientation. It then became clear that becoming self-employed was a valuable option for me, which led me to join the NEW BUSINESS program.

How has this training helped you so far?

I have fundamentally changed my perspective on what it means to create and run a successful business. NEW BUSINESS has offered me an alternative viewpoint to ­ common beliefs about “serious business” that I had ­ deeply internalised. The program has taught me to take my p ­ assions, potentials and dreams rather than limits and imagined deficits as my references. Our personal inter­ change in the group strongly supports me on my way and creates valuable new relationships.

What are you looking for now?

I am looking for consulting clients, companies intending to invest in their corporate development. I would also like to meet potential business partners. In the medium term I will need resources and partners to found a cooperative for fair trade coffee roasting.

What are you intending to offer now with your NEW ­BUSINESS? I offer consulting in corporate development, especially in terms of corporate culture. I organise coffee events to promote fair trade coffee. And I bring both worlds together, with the concept of “coffee break consulting”. Not only am I convinced that coffee breaks tell us a lot about corporate cultures but I also do believe that coffee in all its facets can add to consulting processes in creative ways.

What has called you to the NEW BUSINESS mastery ­training program?

I was looking for an alternative to regular business schools.

On top of the standard theoretical knowledge I was looking for practical learning and for personal development. I considered joining the KaosPilots for the regular training program. However, a full-time three year training was way beyond my possibilities. So when changels offered the ­ NEW BUSINESS mastery training, this was the perfect ­option for me. I experience a holistic approach to set up a business case which evolves from a – in my case – quite vague idea.

Further­more the modular structure of the mastery program ­allows me to make a living for my family and me in my “old business” while I have the opportunity to set up my vision of “new business”.

What are you looking for now?

In order to shift my main professional activities from being a pilot to becoming an entrepreneur, advisor and troubleshooter, I am now looking for companies I can assist. I’d also like to lead challenging projects inside and outside the aviation industry.

What are you intending to offer now with your NEW BUSI­ NESS? I’d love to assist companies in setting up lean and controllable processes and a robust structure in order to comply with the regulatory framework respecting the size and complexity of that individual company. Medizinrads

Wer glaubt, mit der Welt verbunden zu sein, nur weil das WLAN erstrahlt, der irrt: Einen echten Draht zur Umwelt erhält man erst durch die Verbindung zu sich selbst. White­ Eagle Woman, Keeperin der Delicate Lodge Teachings aus New Mexico, schöpft aus dem Wissen uralter Stammes­ tradition und lehrt praktische Tools, die helfen, sich selbst zu finden. Im Workshop “You Matter!“ zeigen uns ihre Schüler, was sie im Medizinrad gelernt haben.

In regelmässigen Abständen treffen sie sich auf der Schweibenalp im Berner Oberland. Der abgelegene, idyllische Ort bietet alles, was man für die Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst und der Natur braucht. Doch diese ­Etappe ihrer Ausbildung haben die jungen Frauen und Männer schon längst hinter sich. Sie stehen kurz vor dem Abschluss ihres “Council Guide Trainings“, eines zweieinhalbjährigen Ausbildungsprogramms im Rahmen der Delicate Lodge Teachings: Diese uralten Lehren stammen von den alten Völkern Mittel- und Noardamerikas und werden seit über 35’000 Jahren von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben. Das ist die Aufgabe der so genannten “Keeper”.

Zu ihnen gehört auch WhiteEagle Woman, die während 13 Jahren von den Ältesten in das Stammeswissen eingeführt wurde. Heute reist die sechzigjährige Südkalifornierin von Land zu Land, um Menschen am reichen Erfahrungsschatz ihrer Tradition teilhaben zu lassen. So auch die Schüler des Council Guide Trainings in der Schweiz. Damit sie Erfahrungen als zukünftige Coaches sammeln können, laden sie zum zweieinhalbtägigen Workshop auf die Schweibenalp ein.

Feuer und Rauch im Medizinrad Die angereisten Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer sind zwischen 18 und 65 Jahre alt und stammen aus allen Teilen der Schweiz und Europas. Nach der Begrüssung können wir unsere Erwartungen und Wünsche an die kommen-

den zwei Tage in die Runde geben. Doch das ungehemmte Sprechen vor rund 50 Menschen ist nicht jedermanns Sache. Manche geben den “Talking Stick” sehr schnell sehr gerne an ihre Sitznachbarn weiter. Beim gemeinsamen Abendessen lockert sich die Stimmung merklich. Am nächsten Morgen erklimmen wir den höchsten Punkt der Alp. Hier breitet sich ein riesiges Medizinrad vor uns aus: Mindestens fünfzig Baumstümpfe reihen sich im Kreis um ein stattliches Feuer. Farbige Flaggen kennzeichnen Norden, Süden, Osten und Westen sowie die vier Nebenhimmelsrichtungen. WhiteEagle Woman erklärt uns die Zeremonie des Räucherns mit weissem Salbei und fächert uns beim Betreten des Rades feinen Rauch ins Gesicht. Still und fast schon ehrfürchtig setzen wir uns auf die Baumstümpfe. Entgegen der Wetterprognose kämpfen sich wärmende Sonnenstrahlen durch die graue Wolkendecke. Wir hören gespannt zu, als WhiteEagleWoman und ihre Schüler uns die Bedeutung des Medizinrads erklären.

Karma Master und White Buffalo Woman Ihre Vorfahren kannten weit über 100 Medizinräder – jedes eine Landkarte für bestimmte Situationen und Herausforderungen. Es gibt praktisch ein Rad für jede Lebenslage.

Während die einen helfen, die richtige Entscheidung zu treffen, offenbaren die anderen, was im Leben fehlt. Und es gibt das Rad der Räder, den so genannten “Sacred 20 Count”. Es ordnet die Materie, die uns umgibt, in 20 präzise Begriffe: Karma Master beispielsweise beschreibt das mysteriöse Konzept, das dafür verantwortlich ist, dass unsere Handlungen unweigerlich auch eine Auswirkung auf uns selbst haben. Oder White Buffalo Woman, die Hüterin der Pflanzenwelt, stellt das kollektive Gedächtnis der Pflanzen dar. Obwohl die Begriffe und Namen, die das Medizinrad in sich trägt, teilweise fremd klingen, haben sie doch eine erfreuliche Wirkung: Sie bringen Ordnung in das Chaos.

Diese Namensgebung macht es auch viel einfacher, eine

Verbindung zu schaffen. Wie man die richtigen Entscheidungen trifft, indem man sich selbst die richtigen Fragen stellt, zeigen uns die Council Guides in Ausbildung in einer theaterreifen Vorführung. Jetzt sind wir an der Reihe: Mit Fragen, die wir aus dem “Wheel of Balance”-Medizinrad ableiten, geben wir uns die Antworten, die uns langsam aber sicher zum Kern unseres Selbst vordringen lassen.

Tief verwurzelte Weisheit Die Council Guides in Ausbildung machen ihre Sache gut.

Nur selten ergänzt WhiteEagle Woman mit einem Beispiel oder einer Geschichte. 3rd International Conference, April 22-26th, 2015 in the Swiss Alps – an Inspiration-Conference for ­Leaders, Managers, and Worker, for Council Guides, Kaos­Pilots, and ChangeMakers A conversation between WhiteEagle Woman and Matti Straub-Fischer aka DawnJaguar We are inviting participents to the 3rd International Con­ ference Moving from Pyramids to Circles. What have we learnt from the previous conferences?

In the first conference in 2013, we explored our understanding of leadership. How can we tap into and learn to use and trust tribal mind as a c­ ollective field? And how can the old tools be brought, translated and transformed into our ­modern world. The tools we have are ancient Medicine Wheels and protocols of the Delicate Lodge Teachings, that have been carried by many generations to promote healthy and whole communities.

In the second conference in 2014, we experienced many of the emotions that are perceived in our businesses and organizations today with pyramids of power, where some people’s voices seem to be worth more than others. We needed to break through resistances and old perceptions as individuals and as an entire group. And we did! We faced the different motivations why people joined our conference. And like in life and in companies, some feel that they really want to be here and learn, and others felt like they had to be here for one reason or another. And it was rich learning ground. The experience once again showed how important honest and transparent sharing of our emotions and seeings is to build trust and intimacy in a circle, a group, a company. The willingness to see and to explore the possibilities that are available to us right now and here and to create meaning together.

What are we dreaming about with this third conference?

We are looking for a group of people who recognize that the pyramidical business structures that exist today are not sustainable and not serving us anymore.

We are looking for a group of people who are interested in exploring more circular structures with us. Circles in which the voices of all the people in the organization have weight.

And circles that foster the work environment and the ­products in the world in a sustainable and regenerative way.

In this third conference of the exploration of the subject, we would value having people from all levels of the business structures from the workers to the CEO and everybody in between in order to harvest the emotional impact and learnings of the current structures with truth and courage.

We are inviting a co-creation in this conference in our exploration for each of you to bring your stories and your truth, so we can see together how we can take steps in the five days. If you can not be with us in person, we would still love to hear your story.

Our goal is to share each of our stories to remove separation between the different levels of the perceived ­structures, so

that as a people we can begin to dream the new regenerative businesses as extensions of our families and as joyful meaningful and inspiring places.

What questions do we want to explore in this third ­Conference?

We want to create time for storytelling to allow for the ­vulnerability, honesty, intimacy,… the foundation need to let go of separation. We have several questions which we want to explore. And we want to create a new sense of co-creation this time. So you and others can join us in designing the conference and we are invite you to bring your pieces and stories… to build and grow this exploration… with the idea to grow a circle that helps us find ways to build businesses and commerce that really work.

We are looking forward to explorations in the bigger c­ ircle and in smaller task forces. Here are some of our questions that we will dive into during these 5 days together on Schweiben­alp: How to deal with the moments when a person realizes that they are no longer in agreement with the dream that is in the center diamond of a company or community…

How do we move on from a tough experience that did not work for me or for us? How do take the power of the we e ­ xperience and leave the pain part behind… what did work? What have the Medicine Wheels and protocols to offer in such challenging moments?

How am I creating a sense of pyramid? How are we creating the war inside of us and in our organisations and companies? How can we understand how we got ourselves here?

What is our idea of success, and what is our idea of ­money?

How does money impact us? How does money impact success in the world and our different beliefs and culturizations around this topic?

How can we re-dream our businesses and our commerce in a sustainable and regenerative way?

We are looking for interested young people… facing career paths… and older people who look at the impact, and the people who feel successful or are in the middle of their experience…

Sometimes it is easier to get an overview about an area or a question if you have been into it for a long time. On the other hand if you haven’t been open and curious and following the latest scientific results, reflecting deeply and openly about its pros and cons you might get tunnel vision.

I have studied and taught in the area of leadership and nutrition for over 30 years now, and the area has become neither less interesting nor less important on a completely down to earth lifestyle level.

So in the following I would like to share with you in essence some of what is moving and happening in the areas of leadership, consciousness, nutrition and science, which also is what my institute, retreat and seminar place – The Eriksen Institute – is also about. And I want to emphasize that nutrition in this article is used in a broader sense, integrating also music, books, nature, family and friends, travelling, movies, meditation, partnerships, silence etc.

Ask your intelligent body We have for many years been bombarded with a lot of recommendations for diets. In my lecturing, teaching and book writing about leadership and nutrition I have often been asked what diets or eating styles I recommend. And when asked I have always emphasized the importance of asking your intelligent body, because it knows the answers long before your brain starts giving you signals about specific current needs, it’s do’s and don’ts. It is also a way of interacting with yourself, which starts building up a lot of self confidence and self worth because it will support you in changing your cognitive patterns and old basic beliefs and assumptions. After all it is your body. And it will turn out to come up with really helpful answers. The building up of a different kind of closeness with our body and the self-responsibility aspect it represents will transfer to many other aspects of our lives.

It may sound strange the first time you start reflecting about asking your body or consider doing it. Which is very natural, as this way of approaching a healthy lifestyle hasn’t till a few years ago become a accepted part of our western culture. These days you can hardly read an article about stress prevention or stress handling without also reading the words: listen to the signals from your body. And as part of reducing our own inner noise and preparing ourselves for our leadership of ourselves and others being as energy neutral as humanly possible, asking our own body about what is important for it to be nourished by, creates a very

good foundation to be nourished in a way, where your nutrition supports you in reducing your inner noise by balancing and vitalizing your biochemistry.

Because biochemistry becomes thoughts and feelings and vice versa. So from our nutrition we need as little noise as possible and as much balancing and building qualities as possible to make us robust and able to meet noise/dissonance/conflict/demands in the outside world, which is a natural part of being a leader. As it is pretty hard to understand a body’s full chemistry with our brains, we might as well ask the body, which knows it all. It knows which needs come first, what is most important to focus on. We’ve got it right at hand.

Train and use your intuitive intelligence and the whole brain We need to stay in close contact with our body intelligence which is yet another way of saying even more YES to training oneself to be whole-brained. And why would we want to develop our whole brain to a higher degree? Because the whole brain and its neural pathways in both hemispheres, both brain halves make up the infrastructure of our intuitive intelligence. And that intelligence is the one we need to persistently train, because our intuitive intelligence is the only intelligence enabling us to overview change and complexity and to innovatively envision what wants to emerge into new solutions, creations, co-operations etc. Our intuitive intelligence is determined by how whole-brained we are, by how many neural pathways we have developed in how many brain centers. And to what a degree we have developed BOTH hemispheres or brain halves – our left, more analyzing part of the brain and our right brain – makes us more able to see challenges and life in a wholeness perspective, making us able to envision new creations, and spotting new trends, products, and solutions that are needed in the world. By asking our highly intelligent body “what is important for it to be nourished by” we activate several brain centers at the same time and we support the brain’s neuroplasticity in building new neural pathways, adding to a more whole and thereby also more socially responsible brain. Why? Because brain means infrastructure for thinking, acting, seeing, envisioning, understanding. The whole brain is the infrastructure for our intuition and for our ability to see aspects in a larger perspective. When we develop a more whole brain neural infrastructure, we become more whole human beings, able to create still more whole organizations, societies and solutions.

Leadership, “nutrition” and lifestyle As leaders of tomorrow we need to stay curious, open to see new opportunities and able to intuitively sense what wants to emerge. Here some groundbreaking neuro-scientific news come in handy. Neuroplasticity has come to stay, changing our paradigm from: “you have the neurons in the brain that you were born with, and they will degenerate with age” – to: “hey no, it is not at all like that. Your brain is neuroplastic meaning it can develop new neurons and new neural pathways throughout your life depending on your lifestyle.” According to modern neuroscience you can increase your neuroplasticity by 1) focused attention: as e.g. a combination of presence, curio­sity, attitude: every time is a new beginning. A routine mind won’t help you build new neural pathways.

2) meditation: a Harvard study has shown convincingly that 20 minutes a day of meditation, 8 weeks in a row, builds grey matter in the brain.

3) fasting: will help your body start regenerating your brain with only 72 hours of fasting.

4) l owering your daily calorie intake from the recommended daily intake over a period of months has shown to improve your cognitive abilities.

Interesting scientific news, I think.

I took the freedom to test the above 4 practices a bit ­before science came up with these news as a fact, meditated some 30 years, fasted several times 5 days every year also over 30 years for the fun of it, tried periods of lowering my calorie intake, and trained various physical disciplines ­requiring focused attention as martial arts, yoga, gymnastics. And I can highly recommend all 4!

They are all four of them parts of ancient traditions from all over the globe and very valuable because they are simple, very effective, very preventive, and accessible for most people.

They may also sound like not so much fun. Which they definitely can be, depending on what attitude you approach them with. So let us remember that life is short. We ­better make sure to have a lot of fun and enjoy life while we are here, giving while growing – doing a lot of good for ourselves and others, while growing from it – always with a glimpse in the eye and a good bunch of humor. Never ­taking ourselves too seriously. That and humor is important nutrition for leadership too.

What’s new in

Cape Town South Africa?

South Africa was drawing a fair bit of media attention in 2014 for celebrating twenty years of peaceful democracy. In the realm of arts and culture, Cape Town proudly hosted the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design’s World Design Capital event that year – featuring “Cape Town’s accomplishments in attracting and promoting innovative design, as well as highlighting our success in urban revitalisation strategies”. A mere six weeks into 2015, however, our country made international headlines with pande­monium in parliament. The State of the Nation Address turned into an overt and ever so wry undermining of any interpretation of democracy. Or innovation or revitalisation, for that matter. Panic? Apocalypse? A testimony of what citizens have increasingly been campaigning against in the past few years? A perfect time to shift the paradigm?

Most definitely, the arts and culture landscape anno 2015 is not the same as when I settled in the Mother City nearly two decades ago. The 1996 White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage, a first of its kind, was at the time negotiated and received in true Madiba spirit: with goodwill, reconciliation, ubuntu and youthful energy. Cape Town soon spearheaded as the first South African city to adopt an Arts & Culture Policy to govern and serve its dispersed and divided artists. The energy was palpable. New galleries opened up, most self-respecting poets, theatre directors, visual artists or musicians organised themselves in so-called ­“Section 21”-companies, later to be turned into Not for Profit Companies, and donor monies started to trickle, then slowly flow. From abroad but also domestically – through new donor bodies such as the National Arts Council (1997), the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund (2000), ­local and provincial arts councils, discipline-specific foundations and private trusts. There was an honest drive to pull in historically disadvantaged communities as participants and audiences for the new, post-Resistance productions. And the world was hungry to see what emerged from this new African nation.

But galleries and NGOs have come and gone and fatigue regarding the Rainbow Nation set in. Across the board, and across cultures it has hardened some into a state of inflexibility and protectionism, from individual arts practitioners to the level of the Presidency. The minister for Arts & Culture toured the country with a draft of a revised White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage recently, which kind of jerked the arts out of their soft sector. It speaks for the first time of Cultural and Creative Industries – in alignment with international trends that germinated in Europe a few decades earlier. We had been shouting for acknowledgement of the sector contributing to and even sparking development, it is true. So the voices were heard, but taken as a cue to measure the impact of the arts grossly on hard economic indicators alone. Admittedly, there is no generally accepted set of evaluation methods and instruments for our sector, so approaches have been borrowed from social sciences all this time that we are trying to measure success. The revised White Paper, relying in numbers instead of on intangibles, attributes a key role to Arts & Culture for the creation of jobs and the growing of South Africa’s economy and ignores to a large extent the intrinsic values of art to advance human and social development.

With attributing a new role to the arts, the call has come for alignment across departments. In fact Cape Town’s own, new Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Policy, freshly approved, does exactly that too. In practical terms this could hail an improvement, recalling a recent controversy around a public sculpture on the Atlantic seaboard, where a curatorial decision got watered down beyond recognition after having passed one city department after another, the way standard city events get processed. But in combination with the second big change from one set of policy papers to the other, i.e. the move away from arms-length regulation to centralisation, geographically and administratively, artists must be on high alert. Imagine a world where a disgruntled minister for Arts and Culture takes down your

work, or where the director of an Art Fair, scared to upset one of his primary donors, removes yet another canvas?

Imagine a city official claiming not to use the term “township” anymore because of its negative connotations, whilst your project emanates from the very essence of the township and is seeking the city support that it deserves?

Doom and gloom then, for arts in the city? Living and working in Cape Town, on the contrary, doesn’t at all feel like the arts are in danger. Artists have an innate sense of survival in the face of bureaucracy and the threat of censorship. The industry is also flexible and playful at heart, able to adopt vernacular and concepts to stay on and actually spur on the bandwagon. So projects continue to sprout and they carry names like lab, incubator, innovation hub or pop up gallery. I have particularly good hopes for the ones that dare to liaise in clusters with like-minded organisations, like Open Streets, Open Design, First Thursdays, Museum Night, That Art Fair. What these projects share is a combination of entrepreneurship and strategic partnerships. They are built around formulas that incorporate self-generated income with a healthy diversity of donor partnerships. They are governed by the people that operate them, which is really important, and they are, above all, Open. Inclusive rather than exclusive. Easily movable. Transportable overseas in the worst case scenario....because only twenty years young and with its own unique set of characteristics, the South African arts scene is as attractive in international circles as it was when it first revealed itself.

Collaboration – the

New Creativity

Creative breakthroughs – in work, in design, in research – are rarely the work of a single lone genius; they are more often the result of collaboration between a group of people.

The group creative process and collaborative process map closely onto one another; hence the statement that “collaboration is the new creativity”.

Collaboration means that people are working together across boundaries of discipline, sector, cultures, and ­often languages and time zones. And where you get people, you get emotion. Creativity and collaboration are full of ­emotion. A deeply serious and senior scientific researcher told me that when a member of his lab team came in last week with a positive result they high-fived each other ­gleefully. When Archimedes had his moment of insight, the first thing he did was not to reach rationally and calmly for his tablet to work out his calculations: it was to leap out of his bath and run naked down the main street of Athens shouting “Eureka!”

The emotions of creativity and collaboration are many. They include frustration, excitement, anger, disruption and misalignment as well as enjoyment and positive mood tone.

A good productive collaboration is when a new ­product – which could be an artefact, the solution to a problem, a research output – is created by a community. The key is in the word ‘community’ where an atmosphere of trust and interaction are essential components, and where people and ideas can be nurtured. A senior manager in a multinational engineering company, his team distributed globally in 95 sites, talks of a “sense of family”. Creative collabora-

tions are strengthened where collaborators are consciously aware of, and acknowledge the need for, trust: the attribution of good intent .

serendipitous encounters, and build new collaborations; or sit quietly on their own with a cup of coffee observing the activity and reading their newspaper.

All collaborations happen within a physical as well as an emotional and cultural context. How do we design and configure the physical workplace so that the sense of family, of community and trust is engendered, supported and sustained? At a meta-level creative collaboration is stimulated, supported and sustained in two ways: firstly by engaging with other people, with ideas and with information – deliberately or by chance; and also by disengaging from our context or the task at hand, thinking our own thoughts or cutting off completely for a greater or lesser length of time.

We do both of these individually or in groups.

And why are the different kinds of places important? Emotion, of course! Taking one aspect of the metaphor above, the Plaza, and our calm enjoyment of its spaciousness, of being able to see what is going on around, without necess­arily becoming involved: spaciousness is important ­because it triggers ancient emotions in the brain. We don’t like feeling “closed in”. I complimented a client – the Manufacturing Director of an engineering company – on his very smart new office. “I hate it” he said. “I know my old office was smaller but it was further from the CEO and I could hear his footsteps coming down the corridor. It gave me a few moments warning. Now he’s in my office before I know it.” The CEO was a notorious bully.

This gives us a classic four-box model where the vertical axis is Engage – Disengage; and the horizontal axis is Individual – Group.

I have been playing with metaphors to ground the different physical spaces. The metaphor of workplace as town gives us: • The Den: Disengage individually • The Dwelling: Disengage as a group • The Bazaar: Engage individually • The Neighbourhood: Engage as a group all built round: • The Plaza where people interact, hang out, exchange ideas, enjoy

Researchers at the Max Plank Institute have been ­studying spaciousness for many years, and suggest that the awareness of spaciousness developed in our early human brains for survival. Tens of thousands of years ago it was vitally important to be able to sense how the landscape affected how much we could see, and how well we could move.

Or in other words, how could an early human scan the near and far distance for danger, and so be able to hide or flee from threats? One reason people feel uncomfortable in open plan offices is the sense of being looked at from ­behind, and the ancient threats that can evoke – is it a person, or a sabre-toothed CEO? “It takes so much energy ignoring other people’s gaze” says the senior editor of a national UK magazine.

Let’s ask the question: How does your workplace support the four quadrants of the model?

“what’s new?“ online This newspaper is the second edition of our newspaper. After the first print under the title “changels-news” in ­January 2014, we received much encouraging feedback asking us to continue with a next edition.

As we are sitting in the middle of the Inno­ vationsdorf, finding a new suitable title came surprisingly easy… Jørgen Smidstrup, our graphic designer, Trix Angst, our new head of communications at changels, the KaosPilots and the Innovationsdorf and Matti Straub-Fischer sat in a meeting in ­December and discussed the idea, content and the title of the new newspaper.

Sudden­ly it was in the air: Why don’t we call it “what’s new?” Click… it had landed in all of us. Cautiously we called it first a “working title” to test the resonance further. The good feeling unfolded nicely. We really are always looking for the new things in life, the new learnings in ourselves, the new angles and perspectives we discover together to see a situation differently and again harvest our learning to move into the next phase with a strong backpack. “what’s new?” feels like it could be a good way to interact with our partners and friends to keep exploring ­together what we see and where to pay attention.

We are very glad to have more guest writers from our network all over the ­

world who were enthusiastic to share their views on what they see, feel and sense as “what’s new?” in their neighbourhoods.

Helen E ­ riksen from ­ Denmark shares her research on how nutrition and leadership are connected; Mirjam Asmal explores Cape Town’s challenging development in a multicultural and very varied surrounding of creative entrepreneurship and how sustainability comes into the game; White­ Eagle Woman shares her vision and dream of people being free, coming together as a circle, an image that has reached out far and meets with other threads of the weave of life to co-create new forms for themselves and in their businesses. Or how Alison ­W illiam from Edinburgh is sharing how we seem to be taking better care of our spaces in our companies and our campuses… the fabric feels rich and inspiring, it encourages us to explore more ourselves, to reach out, to share our stories and to work together as much as we can. It is good news in powerful form.

We dream of a growing newspaper. And we dream of “what’s new?” online as an attractive digital newspaper for people who are interested in the new, the refreshing and the life-strengthening stories from all over our planet. A newspaper that can nurture our hunger for inspiring stories and growth that is sustainable and in balance with all of life. And a newspaper that brings us closer together, that makes us curious to travel and explore and that makes us smile because we feel a bigger connection to the entire hoop of life in our hearts.

Currently we produce “what’s new?” as a co-creation of changels, the KaosPilots and the Innovationsdorf together with Lower East from Berlin. We want to continue to bring this news out every six to twelve months, currently with an edition of 5000 papers. A pdf version will be available online.

Urban Safaris in Berlin & Bern

Do you remember this feeling when walking through a new city. Every corner feels fresh and the curious side in us always wants to explore even more.

We started Urban Safaris in Berlin when Jørgen Smidstrup invited me for a few days into his new hometown in June 2012. We were in the middle of planning the Kaos­ Pilots school launch and I was looking forward to some days offline, without the u ­ sual buzz of priorities and to-do-lists. ­Jørgen and his partner Helle welcomed me to their home and working space in one of the cosy corners of Kreuzberg. And after a welcome coffee, Jørgen simply said: Let’s go!

The next 2 days we were on the saddles of our bicycles and Jørgen guided me through amazing and inspiring corners, found the best cafés, showed me some inspiring shops, art galleries, new public spaces and gardens – I was blown away. Looking at new and old places with curious eyes made my thoughts run and grow into all sorts of directions. Suddenly, I was seeing solutions for questions I was juggling with back home in Bern, while biking in this maje­stic and impressive city up North. I was full of ideas, inspiration and good meetings, ­moments in cafés that felt very nurturing and grounding, and the conversations we had on bicycles and walking along the ­canals, were helping me to see many things much clearer than I thought was possible before.

And for those who know me a bit, this does not come as a surprise: When I am inspired

by something, I am immediately thinking “Could this be fun and giving for others?“ So we invited a first group to join us on our Urban Safari. Jørgen, Helle and myself ­always go and explore new places, projects and meet with different people for every Safari. Since November 2012, we have ­ been able to guide 5 groups thru Berlin, and every tour was a unique journey. And every tour is crowned with a Camillo’s Paladar.

And we do this as long as we are having fun ourselves. The next Urban Safaris are taking place here: Monday/Tuesday, June 1/2, 2015 in Berlin (together with the KaosPilots team SUI3).

Designed by Lower East This newspaper is designed by Lower East – a graphic design and communi­cation ­company based in Berlin, run by the ­Danish designers Helle Marietta Pedersen and ­Jørgen Smidstrup.

Lower East have for the last four-five years been working very close together with changels, Innovationsdorf and Kaos­ Pilots Switzerland. The designers has a long history with the Kaos­Pilots, they ­designed the very first visual identity for the school in Denmark back in 1991 and redesigned it in 2006.

Lower East ­operates mostly in the fields of art, culture, architecture, organizations and education – designing visual identities, websites, posters, campaigns, books, maga­ zines, art catalogues, graphics for ­exhibition ­spaces etc.

Lower East recently established ­ Lower East Lab in Berlin. Ich bin überzeugt, dass die Studentinnen und Studenten der KaosPilots ein Teil dieser Lösung sind. Deshalb helfe ich mit, ihnen die bestmögliche Ausbildung zu bieten. Was mich im Innovationsdorf immer aufs Neue begeistert, ist die positive und ermutigende Stimmung. Hier kommen Menschen zusammen, die nicht aus einer (Verlust-)Angst heraus handeln, sondern aus Überzeugung, die eigenen Talente für eine positive Veränderung einsetzen zu wollen. Things that make sense for him/her, but also brings positive change in his/her environment. This can even be at the KaosPilots school – the most unusual and positive school environment and the least formal learning process I have seen.

And that‘s what grabbed me. Aside from the positive team spirit. For me, learning practical things in a non-formal way makes the studying process the most interesting and inspiring adventure ever.

This scenario is exactly what changels do and what the KaosPilots are trained to co-create with their cooperation partners. That is why I work with them, simply because, here I have to quote a great man; we need to be the change, we want to see in this world. Changels and KaosPilots dream, innovate, envision new ways and perspectives AND take action sustainably, with edge and a relieving twist to it for the greater good.

Franziska Meyer Head of Sustainability I have been working in the pedagogical field for many years, and I have always been dreaming about schools that would enable their students to learn for life. Here at the KaosPilots, the students bring themselves to their limits, where learning takes place in the magic field of the newness and the using of our tools and skills. Learning about sustainable and 7-generational thinking is essential and brings a new enthusiasm.

Ursula Maerz Coach, Supervisorin und Trainerin Gerne habe ich die Füsse auf der Erde, den Kopf im Himmel und das Herz bei den Menschen. Mein Antreiber: Die Gewissheit, dass transparente Kommunikation Verständnis, Empathie und Erkenntnis ermöglicht. Mein Talent: Mit Heiterkeit den Ernst der Lage erkennen. Empowerment, damit die Herz-Bedürfnisse und Visionen umsetzbar werden. Meine Herausforderung: Nachhaltend heilen und alles, was lebt, zur natürlichen Grösse entfalten lassen. Mein Traumjob: Als Persönlichkeitstrainerin, Lehrerin, Coach und Supervisorin Einzelne und Gruppen stärken, damit sie das Leben nach ihrem inneren Rhythmus tanzen mögen.

Technik sei dank! Wir müssen uns nicht mehr die Hände wundscheuern beim Wäschewaschen. Heute ist dies ein Vorgang, der fast von alleine läuft. Wir müssten nicht mal mehr nach Farben sortieren (Farbpigmentaufsaugetücher), oft auch nicht selber waschen (Partner / Kinder) oder können es eh zu jeder Zeit tun (eigene Maschine). Trotz all dieser Erleichterungen fehlen uns Frauen die Waschtage der Vergangenheit. Neinnein, keine Angst, jetzt kommt nicht: Früher war alles besser ... und doch … damals konnte, nein, musste beim Waschen gesprochen, gesungen geklatscht werden. Alles, aber auch wirklich alles kam zur Sprache. Stolz und Leid mit den Kindern, Partnern, Schwiegermüttern. Schweres und Leichtes bei der Arbeit, im Leben. Preisschwankungen der Grundnahrungsmittel.

Haarpflegetipps. Neueste Trends in der Kleidung, Krankenpflege, Philosophie. Natürlich auch die Fragen, wer was mit wem, wann und weshalb. Politische Diskurse wurden geführt. Taktiken ausgeheckt, wie man etwas an den Mann bringt, trotz Widerstand desselben. Erfahrungen, Rezepte, Geheimnisse wurden ausgetauscht. Mitgefühl gegeben und Verständnis empfangen und Lebenserleichterndes erfunden. Es wurde lebendig, frei und themenübergreifend ausgetauscht. Ohne die Anforderung an ein vorzeigbares Resultat. Die Hände, der Körper waren beschäftigt, also konnte man den Gedanken und Gefühlen, Hypothesen und Tatsachen freien Lauf lassen. Nach so einem Waschtag war nicht bloss die Wäsche frisch und sauber in Schrank und Kommoden versorgt, sondern waren auch die Gedanken und Empfindungen neu sortiert, aufgefrischt und eingeordnet. Herrlich!

Wir changels-Frauen organisieren ca. 4x pro Jahr den ­plApéro – das feine Treffen von engagierten Frauen. Bei einem Snack-Znacht mit verschiedenen Getränken plau­ dern wir ungezwungen über das, was uns gerade beschäftigt und tauschen uns aus. Die Gruppe ist jedesmal anders zusammengesetzt, die Dynamik daher unvorhersehbar.

Mal stecken wir noch vor dem Anstossen in wilden Debatten, mal erzählen wir schön geordnet der Reihe nach, was wir alles in der Zeit seit dem letzten plApéro erlebt haben (zugegeben, eher selten), mal sind wir betroffen und r­ atlos, mal ist es ruhig-genüsslich, mal sind Lösungen gefragt, mal ist ein befreiendes Fröhlich-Durcheinander. Aber jedes Mal nehmen wir Anteil an dem, was die anderen bewegt.

Diese Freiheit und natürliche Achtsamkeit ermöglicht ein momentbezogenes, tiefes Miteinander – grad auch, weil sich der Kreis um 22 Uhr auflöst – bis zum nächsten Mal, wenn es wieder heisst: plApéro – die Frauenrunde.

We are looking for 35 KaosPilots for Team SUI4!

We KaosPilots have a dream... of a global school where creative leaders, responsible entrepreneurs and change makers meet and learn, practice and play, have fun and work together in teams whilst networking.

We dream of a school where the students can work with real world challenges. A place where partners, clients, visitors and friends join us regularly to look at questions and challenges together.

And we dream of a school that is a living organism with self-responsible human beings who cherish new ideas and work to strengthen life in all forms.

The KaosPilots school initiated in Denmark in 1991. We launched the KaosPilots school here in Bern in 2010 and in 2012 our first students of team SUI1 started their 3 years of intensive full time studies with us. Focussing on Creative Leadership Design, Creative Project Design, Creative Process Design and Creative Business Design.

We are currently 37 students in three teams (classes) and 10 staff members from Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Kosovo, Poland, Brasil, South Africa, and the United States of America. And with 75 guest-teachers, 25 coaches and mentors from all over the world and some 100

ambassadors who support us in our start-up and evolving as a new business and entrepreneurial school. Our students learn mostly here in Bern, in Aarhus/Denmark, in Berlin, in our external classroom that is currently established in Cape Town/South Africa and wherever the students choose to work and play all over the world.

In spring 2014, we started a collaboration with the Berner Fachhochschule (Bern University of Applied Sciences) and their Institute of Corporate Development. Over the last year we have been able to launch a variety of projects ­together and to use synergies in order to explore how we can best work together.

Currently our students are learning with real world project assignments from companies and organizations or communities about how to create projects and businesses that are sustainable and strong, attractive and fun for all involved.

Amongst our clients we can count smaller and larger organiza­tions: Alpines Museum Bern, Gruuna Agricultural ­Insurance, G ­ ermany, Märitladen Wabern, Oticon & Bern­afon (producing hearing aids) from Copenhagen and Bern, the initiative “Grips gewinnt!” from the German Joachim Herz and ­Robert Bosch foundations in Hamburg and ­Berlin, Intermundo umbrella organization for youth exchange Bern, the Innovationsdorf Bern, changels and Funk-Group ­insurance.

Our first 10 graduate students will be ready for take off

this July 15th, 2015. They are currently designing their own businesses and projects.

We at the KaosPilots are looking for new talents every year.

ANNA FRITSCHE, KAOSPILOT from Team SUI1. She grew up in the idyllic Black Forrest, Germany, travelled a lot, studied Social Sciences and Media Science, is a passionate vegan, worked as tattooer, left-winged radio moderator and Skateboard Designer.

RAFFAEL GFELLER, KAOSPILOT from Team SUI3, is born in Bern, Switzerland. Besides several travels and a short period of working at a Kitesurfschool in Egypt he has spent his life in Bern. Before he decided to come to the KaosPilots he was at an economical school, worked in an office and made different experiences as a construction worker.

WHAT DO THE KAOSPILOTS MEAN TO YOU? “In my eyes the Kaos­Pilot education is just awesome. It is a place where every­thing is possible. What I appreciate the most so far is the safe space and the support this school provides. Outpost

in Cape Town

On February 17th, 13 KaosPilot students from Team SUI2 travelled from Bern to Cape Town to bring all their skills, their know how and talents to work for 4 months with ­local partner and client organizations in the Western Cape.

Together with 34 KaosPilot students from Team 20 from the Danish KaosPilots school in Aarhus, they will experience one of their most intense learning and working time to­ gether in a foreign context that is full of colours and change. Why do we throw our students into cold South ­African water?

The KaosPilots have always tried to bring their students to new surroundings where they can apply their tools from the 3 semesters of working together. The concept of a temporary external classroom has been growing as a dream from Uffe Elbæk. Bringing learners to a place that feels new to everybody, wakes up all of our senses. It is an adventure to travel as a group of projectleaders to a place where you do not really know how people tick there. Still, it is our ambition as a school, that our students can bring their experience as projectleaders and process consultants, facilitators and guides and be helpful for local client organizations ­during 3 months of project work in a truly different culture.

Previous KaosPilots outposts were in San Francisco (starting in 1996 with Team 3), in Durban, in Bejing, in Vancouver, in Shanghai, in Havanna, in Bogota, and now since 2013 in Cape Town. Usually the school would set up these new external classrooms for 2 years and then move on to a new place where something interesting was happening.

Originally these outposts were 12 months long, then due to visa regulations and other restrictions, we reduced the durations to 3-4 months.

For the first time, in 2014, there were two teams of Kaos­ Pilots meeting and going on an outpost together: Team SUI1 from Bern and Team 19 from Aarhus. After a visit to the first outpost in Cape Town in May 2013, we as staff of both schools decided that we want to stay for 5-7 years in Cape Town, in order to create a more sustainable base for our schools, our students and the partnerships and projects we will establish in this time.

Why Cape Town? The city at the Southern tip of Africa ­offers an amazing melting pot of cultures, colours, interests, businesses, languages, faces, foods and challenges.

Still an attractive city for migrants to join, Cape Town is growing in all directions. The legacy of apartheid can still be felt, but also the new drive and hope to make this RainbowNation rise in new and beautiful ways.

A straightforward and unafraid colourful energy to express life-force in every corner and café, be that down-town ­under the Table Mountain or in the far reaching suburbs of Gugulethu or Mitchels Plains. Creative Design and recycling, upcycling and inspiring art creations are popping up every day and bring a fresh breeze into the more European old town.

Cape Town was World Capital of Design in 2014, and thanks to this initiative (or in opposition against such a big label) the region has brought forward an astounding range of initiatives of traditional and modern design and social change questions into the Cape region. Cape Town is home to several thousand Swiss and Scandinavian citizens, most coming to enjoy the beauty of this region, and some also to build bridges between different groups and cultures to create new realities.

For the first time, we will have two of our own South A ­ frican students returning to the Mother City as Cape Town is also respectfully called. Nonkululeko Mlangeni and Robyn Fisher will return to their home-turf with the external classroom. We are excited to see how this next round of evolution will grow and strengthen our entire school ­community.

Jeden Tag erleben wir hier in Bern innovative Unternehmen, die spannende Projekte starten. Restaurants und Bars, die mit immer neuen Kreationen die Sinne inspirieren, KünstlerInnen und Changemaker, die kribblige und erfrischende Projekte initiieren und umsetzen. In der Medienlandschaft und der Öffentlichkeit erfährt die Berner Innovationskraft jedoch noch nicht die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie aus unserer Sicht verdient. Das wollen wir mit den Berner Inspirationstagen ändern.

Während Zürich als Finanz- und Wirtschaftsmetropole, Basel als Pharma- und Genf als internationale Diplomatenstadt bekannt sind, wird Bern ausserhalb der Region meist als Beamten- und Verwaltungsstadt wahrgenommen. Mit den Berner Inspirationstagen wollen wir das innovative Bern mit einer branchen- und grenzüberschreitende Platt­ form stärken, die unsere Kreativität, Innovationskraft und Neugier hier sichtbar macht und fördert. Und natürlich geht es längst nicht nur um Bern. Denn wir können viel von­ einander lernen, von unseren NachbarInnen, von andern Orten auf diesem Planeten. Kopieren funktioniert meist nicht, inspirieren hingegen schon.

Die Berner Inspirationstage sind ein Anlass zum Mit­machen und Mitgestalten. Ein Ort, wo jede Stimme gehört wird und wo wir uns auf Augenhöhe begegnen.

Im November 2014 haben wir die ersten vier Inspiration Awards für beeindruckende Räume verliehen. Gleichzeitig fand im Rahmen der ersten Inspirationstage ein OpenSpace-Workshop zum Thema “Innovation in Bern” statt.

Rund 30 Personen haben dabei die aktuelle Situation ana-

lysiert, Ideen generiert und Projekte initiiert. Quer durch alle Stadtthemen, von Treffpunkten über neue Formen der Vernetzung von Menschen von ausserhalb und Menschen, die schon länger hier wohnen. Wo trifft man in Bern Menschen, dies sich für soziale, kulturelle, wirtschaftliche oder Bildungsprojekte und -initiativen interessieren? Moderiert wurde der Open Space von Studierenden der KaosPilots Team SUI2 und von Matti Straub-Fischer auf Deutsch und Englisch, da neben Bärner Modi u Giele auch diverse internationale Teilnehmende angereist waren.

Die ersten Inspirationstage haben grosse Lust gemacht auf mehr. Deshalb wollen wir auch in diesem Jahr das kreative Bern wieder zusammenbringen. Am 22. und 23. Oktober 2015 findet deshalb die zweite Ausgabe der Berner Inspirationstage statt.

Wir wollen damit eine Entwicklungs- und GesprächsPlattform für kreative und neugierige Bernerinnnen und Berner zu schaffen. Hier können sich KünstlerInnen und Kunstschaffende, Organisationen, Verwaltungen und Unter­­ nehmerinnen und Unternehmer, VisionärInnen und PraktikerInnen austauschen und gemeinsam neue Projekte konkretisieren.

Inspiration­ Awards Die KaosPilots

Am 27. November 2014 haben die KaosPilots in Bern ihre ersten Inspiration Awards verliehen. Und zwar für drei ­Arten von Räumen: für inspirierende Lernräume, für inspirierende Arbeits­ räume und für inspirierende öffent­ liche Räume. Aus über 30 Nominationen hat die Jury vier ­Projekte ausgewählt.

Wir lernen, arbeiten und bewegen uns tagtäglich in verschiedenen Räumen. Sind die Räume und Orte, die wir dazu nutzen, unterstützend, um lustvoll und mit Energie etwas zu studieren oder eine Dienstleistung zu erbringen oder an einem Produkt zu tüfteln? Wie fördern unsere ­Räume das Miteinander, das Gespräch auf gleicher Augenhöhe und das einander wirklich Sehen, um gemeinsam ­Dinge w ­ eiter oder neu entwickeln zu können? Diese Fragen stellen wir KaosPilotInnen uns oft, wenn wir für unsere KundInnen und PartnerInnen inspirierende Räume der Begegnung und des Schaffens kreieren wollen.

Seitdem wir im Oktober 2012 die KaosPilots-Schule für Unternehmerinnen und Unternehmer im Innovationsdorf Bern gegründet haben, experimentieren wir mir mit unseren eigenen Räumen in der ehemaligen Fabrik Wifag.

Wie können wir alte Industrieräume mit Einzelbüros zu einem kreativen Mit­ einander, einem Co-Working-Raum umgestalten? Wie können wir neue Formen entwickeln

und trotzdem Symbole der ehemaligen Wifag-Produktion und -Kultur bestehen lassen? Zum Beispiel Stempeluhren und Schliessmechanismen, Chefprivilegien mit Lavabos im schönen Büro und Weisungen, wer was betreten darf und was nicht.

Unsere eigene Auseinandersetzung mit einem Gebäude, das wir für einige Jahre zwischennutzen dürfen, liess uns neugierig werden. Wer hat auch noch Freude an diesen Fragen und diesen Entwicklungen – “sowohl innenarchitektonisch wie ausserhalb in der Quartiergestaltung?” Oft ist es nicht einfach, ohne Einladung oder Batch Arbeitsräume zu erleben. Google in Zürich wird immer wieder als spannendes Beispiel erwähnt. Aber wie kommen wir da rein?

Wie können wir uns von verschiedenen Beispielen inspirieren lassen? Und wie können diese Beispiele noch bekannter gemacht werden?

Mit den KaosPilots Inspiration Awards wollen wir belebende Beispiele von Lern-, Arbeits- und öffentlichen Räumen einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen.

GewinnerInnen der ersten KaosPilots Inspiration Awards von 2014 sind: • Uni-S, Gebäude der Universität Bern im Länggass-Quartier als inspirierender Lernraum mit anmächeliger Mensa

und schönem Ambiente zum Lernen und Austauschen.

• Der co-working-space “Hauptsitz” in Bern und “BrainGym” von Swisscom für einen kleinen und einen grossen Arbeitsraum.

• Bundesplatz Bern in der Kategorie öffentliche Räume für seine einladende, offene und multifunktionale Einfachheit und Atmosphäre.

Die Jury für die KaosPilots Inspiration Awards 2014 setzte sich zusammen aus: Alison Williams, Edinburgh, Lorenz Leuenberger, Architekt, Baudirektion Kt. Zürich, als Vertretende der Studierenden waren Robyn Fisher, KaosPilotin Team SUI2 und Radiomacherin aus Kapstadt, Südafrika, und Marc Segmüller, KaosPilot Team SUI2 und Informatiker, Bern, sowie als Vertretung der KaosPilots-Schule Cedric Zaugg, Teamleader und Projektleiter und Matti ­ Straub-Fischer, Headmaster KaosPilots.

ASANDA KAKA, KAOSPILOT from Team SUI3. She is from Cape Town, has worked in media and is a founder of art pro­ jects in South Africa. As a child, she was always i­nterested in the impact of storytelling and grew up being attracted to conversations with older people just to hear their amazing tales.

WHY THE KAOSPILOTS? “I have always struggled with s­ eeing where I fit in this world. I moved around different jobs because I never felt the need to stay where I was not happy. This gave me an opportunity to see how different groups of people do things. KaosPilots offers me a chance to play with all of this knowledge that I continue to receive, and create my own edu­ cation within an education while combining all of the learnings.”
