Dear readers, partners and friends, Our world is in a very polarized state. We fight for causes, and we oppose others. The world feels like it is ­being torn apart into two equally large pieces; two camps where there are people who want to protect what they have and what they believe is right, and people who see the need to move on, to explore new ways and new possibilities. Between the two camps there is war. Accusations surface and often the media increases the drama between the two camps, so we all feel like we are right, but we no longer have the willingness to ask questions to find out how things really are.

When we want innovation and transformation, we need to get free from these polarizations. We need to see the middle way that will lead us past the old obstacles onto new and higher ground with new perspectives for all of us.

At the Innovationsdorf, at the KaosPilots and at changels, we firmly believe that we need to let go of our ­attachments and simply be in that middle place. We see that we need to ask more questions again, and to keep searching and listening for that middle stance that will eventually help us move forward in a new and lifeaffirming way. We may need to let go of some beliefs we have come to love. Beliefs like “who are the good guys” and “who are the bad guys” in this world. Even beliefs of what gives us the energy and the will power to be here now and to fight for the things we believe are good and noble causes.

If we want to find that middle way (which by the way can not be a lame compromise between two opinions), we need to learn to listen to each other again. Deep listening allows us to listen without wanting to beat the other with a better argument, but to see the world from the other’s perspective. To take new information in, without assuming that we know everything already. And then to come back with our questions to understand more.

We believe that in this listening and talking on eye-level, there will be no more fights, but rather new understandings and questions that keep leading us to a higher ground.

We believe that the time for finding this middle way forward is emerging now. Are you interested in finding and walking this path with us?

Evolving

the KaosPilot curriculum

What is needed to become a visionary leader? How do we train ourselves to be responsible and mindful entrepreneurs and community builders? How can we best be the change we want to see in our world?

These are leading questions for the KaosPilots when evolving their curriculum for the 3 year full time ­ ­training program.

At the centre of the KaosPilots Switzerland is the dream to create a school that allows our students to grow and unfold their calling and their gifts and talents. The Being statement of our School articulates this dream: We, KaosPilots Switzerland, are life’s challenging training ground to unfold who we truly are.

We hold the understanding that each of our students is a unique human being with his or her own dreams and inspiration, strengths and talents. From experience we know that it is a long process to find out what our dreams really are. Most of us are experimenting and testing ourselves in different fields until we are about 50 years old, to then know where we want to make a difference and commit ourselves longer term.

So, what does this mean for an entrepreneurial education where the students are between 21 and 45 years of age?

It means that we need to have a double focus – that is on the individual dreams and callings, the gifts and talents that every student brings with him or her so they can figure out who they truly are and what they really want in life – and to have the focus on the collective: What wants to emerge when we come together as a community of hungry ­learners, KaosPilots and change makers? Because community is what makes any idea and business project fly.

Some KaosPilot students become entrepreneurs starting their own companies and organizations to bring inspiring services and innovation into the world, some become project leaders for complex and interdisciplinary change, ­others become community builders, peacemakers and still others love to fight for causes as activists in new collective ways. What they all have in common is the hunger to learn more about themselves and about each other, about how to live a balanced life and how to create sustainable structures for themselves and the people with whom they live and work.

KaosPilots need to become very good at the individual discipline to pursue a dream and at the same time they need to become strong team players, evocative leaders for flat structured and self-organizing teams and companies to create growth. This double focus is the back bone of our curriculum. It means that 5 of the 7 exams that every student needs to pass are group and team exams of different natures. First, they learn to work together in teams of 3 to 5 people, later, they learn to work together in and with groups of up to 50 people.

Our Danish KaosPilot partner school in Aarhus has 25 years of experience in this field from which we can benefit. Our own experience goes back four years so far, during which

21 Swiss KaosPilots have graduated. What we have learnt as a small business school is: • O ur students’ dreams and calling, their gifts and t­alents are key for their learning process. In our coaching, guidance and teachings as well as in the client project work, this needs to be in the foreground.

• We need more cross-team/class-collaboration.

This means more working and learning together among the different teams and together with the staff, the partners and teachers of our network.

This allows for more diversity and for learning from experienced people in particular fields as well as community building. We call this co-creation: Each and every member of our school tribe needs to live into their responsibilities, and pull their own weight to make the whole school work well and successfully.

• Maintaining the focus on project design and interdisciplinary collaboration, business planning, process leadership and facilitation as well as entre­ preneurship is a strong pathway for learning and training ourselves to get better at implementing our dreams.

• Moving and learning together as a tribe, ­keeping our school’s kitchen clean and bright, being mindful of the resources we are using, learning to address difficult issues in our community and how to deal with conflicts and challenges – these are essential aspects of our training to be the change makers who do not need hierarchy anymore, but who can evoke the strength of self-responsibility and selfauthorship in a business and a tribe where every voice matters.

• Creating daily practices that are crucial to stay on track with our dreams. How do we train our spirit, our body, our emotional powers and the courage of our heart to be bright and clear? How can we listen to the silence?

• Learning to be a strong tribe, how to build relationships, how to trust people who are very different from ourselves. When mistakes happen, how to come to new agreements with each other when that is needed… to find answers to these questions we make use of the power of the ancient wisdom of the Delicate Lodge Teachings from the old ­Mayan and Northern American tradition of people who lived in balance with the Earth.

We are adjusting our curriculum to become more meaningful, more powerful for the individuals and the collective.

We will keep on growing as edge walkers, learning about polarities in this world and seeking to find a new middle way between the extremes that we currently see fighting everywhere in the world.

Welcome Team SUI5 Team SUI5 has started their journey as KaosPilots in Bern.

Currently, nine students have taken up their s­ tudies. It’s ­Gideon Nielsen from Denmark, Melina Wälti from Switzerland, Siba Nkumbi and Sisa ­Ntshwaqela from South Africa, Ulrik Ploug Lorentzen from Denmark ­ ( behind), ­David Pipola and Mario Von Gunten from Switzerland, Tulani Charlie from South Africa (back row) and ­Domenica Zambrano from Ecuador (front row). They are still waiting for one more student: Mandisa Ngqulana from South ­Africa. She did not get her visa yet which unfortunately has become “business as usual” in the past years for us in dealing with immigration. Her team mates keep an empty chair for her in every lecture.

Looking for Team SUI6 We are looking for new talent for our Team SUI6. Courageous men and women from all over the world, who are hungry to learn about themselves and about each other and the world. A house for teenage refugees in Stockholm

Since early 2016, I have been involved with a project designing and working in a small refugee home for unaccompanied minors in Stockholm. The project has developed and grown over the year; today we are a company called Sapling founded by two colleagues and me.

It all started when a friend of mine found a house in Stockholm that was for rent from January 2016 to July 2017. Sweden is ­going through challenges with refugees and immi­gration, mainly due the situation in the Middle East. My friend, himself a secondgeneration immigrant, felt strong compassion for the refugees and thought the house could accommodate some of the children.

So, we made an offer to the municipality.

They would hire us to run the house while covering the rent and we would offer care and accommodation for five teenagers. ­Today, we have a full house with boys aged from 15 to 17. We have three staff teams with one female and one male co-worker each staying in the house together with the teenagers for 10 days and nights at a time.

All female co-workers are experienced mums. Two of them also speak the teen­ agers’ mother tongue. The male ­co-workers are all younger than their female colleagues, which makes the generational difference to the teenagers smaller.

We have established close relations with the social secretaries, legal guardians and other stakeholders as well as local schools,

sport clubs and various recreational associations. As a result of these relation­ships, all teenagers were enrolled with school and a spare time activity within a month or two from moving in to our house. Today, all the boys understand and speak Swedish. Some have been moved to school classes with only Swedish students and one of our teenagers recently won a bronze medal in the Swedish Wrestling Championship.

So, with great encouragement from the muni­cipality, we have decided to start our own company and continue working in this field. We just recently bought a house that we will open up in December. It has been a long journey to start the company with applications, rules and regulations to study and follow. The big­gest challenge however, was raising cash for the down payment of a house. It took 6 months of hard work, networking and negotiating.

The breakthrough created lots of energy but has also presented us with new obstacles that we need to solve before December: We need to get approved by the Health and Social Care Inspectorate to start a support home which meets all their requirements.

And we need to get the social services to place teenagers in our house.

With that said and with lots of challenges ahead, I look forward to dancing with whatever awaits around the corner. www.sapling.se

Baucontainer stehen herum, es wird gehämmert, geschraubt und gesägt. Laute Rufe und Staub erfüllen die Luft, es riecht nach Feuer und überall laufen Bauarbeiter mit gelben Helmen durch die Gegend. Es sieht aus wie auf einer richtigen Baustelle und doch ist etwas anders: Es sind nicht ­Erwachsene am Bauen, sondern Kinder.

Die Kinderbaustelle befindet sich auf einem Stück Brachland am Rande der Grossbau­ stelle “Gurzelen, Omega-Areal, Gygax-­A real“ im Herzen der Stadt Biel. Sie soll über mindestens 5 Jahre einen Platz am Rande dieser Grossbaustelle finden.

Das Projekt startete im Frühling 2015.

Die Kinderbaustelle ist ein kostenloses, partizipatives Ferien- und Freizeitangebot für Kinder ab der ersten Klasse. Für die Teilnahme ­ ­ bedarf es keiner Anmeldung, einzusteigen und mit­­­zubauen ist jederzeit möglich.

Beim Bauen und Gestalten mit unterschied­ lichen Baumaterialien lernen Kinder, sich handwerklich und kreativ im Freien zu betätigen. Spielend werden Sprachbar­rieren überwunden, neue Freundschaften geknüpft und die sozialen und motorischen Fähigkeiten der Kinder ­gefördert.

Ich gehöre zum achtköpfigen Kernteam der Kinderbaustelle. Als ich von der Projektidee hörte, war ich sofort begeistert. Ich arbeite gern mit diesen Projektmenschen und den Kindern zusammen.

Es war für mich eine gute Möglichkeit, bei einem Projekt mitzuwirken, das genau mei­ nen Interessen und Wünschen entsprach.

Getragen wird das Projekt vom Verein Kinderbaustelle Biel, realisiert wird es in Zusammenarbeit mit dem städtischen ­Bereich Jugend + Freizeit. Seit rund einem ­halben Jahr bin ich Präsident des Vereines. ­Gemeinsam mit Marion Ebert bin ich verantwortlich für die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Kommunikation der Kinderbaustelle, die Planung und Organisation des Betriebes.

Einmal pro Woche betreue ich die Kinder auf dem Platz.

Momentan sind wir mit dem so ­genannten Rückbau beschäftigt. Immer im Herbst reissen wir zusammen mit den Kindern alle Installationen ab, damit im nächstes Jahr wieder Neues entstehen kann. Mit Suppe, Würsten und einem grossen Feuer wird sich die Kinderbaustelle in den Winterschlaf verabschieden. Dies gilt jedoch nicht für das Kernteam. Für uns heisst es zurück zu blicken auf das Jahr und die Planung für die nächste Saison an die Hand zu nehmen – damit die Kinder in Biel auch 2017 eine Möglichkeit erhalten, Freiräume selb­ ständig zu gestalten. www.kinderbaustelle.ch

The Ninevites – to tell our stories with textiles

Since completing my studies at the Kaos­ Pilots this summer I have moved back to Johannes­burg where I am currently based.

I am working with a group of artisans and weavers from different parts of the ­SADEC region including Lesotho and Namibia where we make our textiles using local materials.

Since I graduated as a KaosPilot in summer 2015, I have been busy putting my life design into practice. The good news – I don’t work anymore; I am just busy doing what I love to do. The bad news – It took much more time and effort than expected to get there. However, it was worth every bit of it.

The Ninevites is a collaborative project and platform to explore under-told narratives of/from life in the South using textiles, ­images and design. It is a celebration of black aesthe­tics. We design textiles, curate events and keep pushing to tell our stories in ways that reflect their vast beauty and ­invention.

The name Ninevites originally refers to a gang of South African black men who longed to break free from the system of injustice in the late 19th century and establish a new way of living. They took their name from the biblical Ninevites. Although they had a different agenda, their courage inspired me to reflect on my current environment and what was happening in my world, and try creating a different reality for my peers and me.

Our textiles are featured as part of the Hand­ made Contemporary Design Fair which takes place in October 2016 and we will showcase at the upcoming design indaba in Cape Town in March 2017. We’ve also collaborated with some established textile galleries and there’s plenty of other exciting stuff in the pipeline.

One of the things I have started doing after prototyping for my final year project at the KaosPilots is to explore the idea of making my own natural yarn dyes because I found that the local weavers were using ­chemical dyes which I personally didn’t enjoy. So together with them we are experimenting with our own natural dyes using different local plants. The project has also created some employment for the artisans and in a way connected the different countries and people within the SADEC region.

The biggest challenge has been with finan­ ces. We did not have enough starting capital and support structures. It has been a bit of a struggle but we have taken it one day at a time and the KaosPilots tools that I have incorporated have come in handy in this ­regard.

My dream is to ultimately establish an annual Pan African textile symposium where we can connect artisans from the continent and beyond, exchange knowledge and share best practices. We also want to continue collaborating with other like-minded people, push boundaries and continue to preserve the tradition of textiles and fabric weaving.

In my final project at the school, I defined my life design, which was about how, what and why I want to live my life. Ever since, it has helped me to stay on track with my various activities. Whenever I doubted what I was doing or had to take a decision, I looked at the life design I had made and knew what to do.

In less than a year I started four new businesses. Rio Grande, a change ­agency, ­offers the best tools and methods for change processes. The Resilience Center Switzerland provides coaching, training and consulting services to develop resilience. The online shop smartdeco promotes and sells beautiful and fair products. And with funtastisch I organize dinner shows and work as a production manager for an opera project.

I started some of the businesses with business partners. We created partnerships with companies like the health insurance CSS. We won a four-year contract from the Swiss Federal Administration and have had the pleasure of working for a wide ­range of clients across many industries, e.g. ­Mobility, Ricola, Novartis, Endress + ­Hauser, Rotary, the Salvation Army and many more.

Looking back, it has been a very intense but good time since I left the KaosPilots. I have experienced that it is possible to do every­ thing I want to do if I really want it. I always thought, I should concentrate on one thing to make it successful. Today, I know I can do more than one project at a time and still be successful. It is all about planning, setting priorities, focus and of course the definition of success. For me, success means to be happy. When I go to bed and think it was a good day, I am happy. When I am doing what I like to do, I am happy. When I am able to pay my bills (which was always the case), I am happy.

Soon, I will move to my first own office and workshop location. It will be a major milestone for me and my business activities. I am very optimistic about the future and I am looking forward to see what wants to unfold next. 25 Jahre

KaosPiloten

Neue Lebendigkeit von Kapstadt bis zum Nordkap Von Matti Straub-Fischer, Headmaster KaosPilots Switzerland

Anfangs Oktober feierten die KaosPilotInnen in ­Aarhus, Dänemark ihr 25-jähriges Bestehen mit einer grossen Party. Rund 450 der 800 diplomierten Kaos­ Piloten kamen an diesem Wochenende zusammen.

Mit einem zweitägigen Lernfestival über zukunftsrelevante Ausbildungsfragen starteten die Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten.

Danach stellte die Schulleitung ihre Zukunftspläne vor: ­Unter anderem soll auf dem Hafengelände eine neue Ideen­ fabrik entstehen und es wurde ein Förderpreis geschaffen, mit dem Leute und Organisationen ausgezeichnet werden, die auf innovative Art neue Arbeitsplätze schaffen.

Der Preis entstand in Kooperation mit einer dänischen Personal­rekrutierungsunternehmung und wird jährlich mit umgerechnet rund 15’000 Franken dotiert.

Beeindruckend ist die Palette unterschiedlicher Projekte und Initiativen, die über das vergangene Vierteljahrhundert von KaosPilotinnen und KaosPiloten weltweit lanciert und umgesetzt wurden. Das geht von der Gründung der dänischen Kinderuniversität in Vesterbro, einem der leben­ digsten Multikulti-Quartiere von Kopenhagen, über die Gründung dutzender von Firmen im Dienstleistungs-, ­Beratungs- und Produktionsbereich, die Wiedergründung der Tibetischen Fussballnationalmannschaft durch ­Michael Nybrandt bis zur Unterstützung von Migrantinnen und ­Migranten in Berlin und andern Orten der Welt. Von Kapstadt bis zum Nordkap: Die KaosPilotInnen haben der Welt immer wieder etwas neue Lebendigkeit und Lebensfreude eingehaucht.

Die KaosPiloten-Schulen sind weltweit zu einem Inspirationsort für Lehrpersonen, UnternehmerInnen und Führungskräfte geworden, weil in ihnen immer wieder Dinge hinterfragt und ausprobiert werden, die mutige Entwick­ lungen ermöglichen. Der Bürgermeister von Aarhus hat seiner ­Freude über die KaosPiloten als farbenfrohe Impuls­ geber für seine Stadt klar Ausdruck verliehen. Die ­Werte der KaosPiloten seien mittlerweile zu den Werten der zweitgrössten Stadt in Dänemark geworden. Und der Bürger­ meister schmunzelte, als er dies der illustren Gästeschar aus der halben Welt erzählt.

Wir freuen uns, wenn die Berner KandidatInnen für das Stadtpräsidium diesen Spirit aufnehmen und sich die Kaos­ Piloten-Schule im Berner Wylerquartier zu Nutze m ­ achen, wenn es ums Lösen von kniffligen Stadtentwicklungs­ fragen geht oder um die Moderation von herausfordernden Gesprächen zwischen verschiedenen Gruppierungen, die wieder näher zusammenfinden sollen. www.kaospilot.dk www.kaospilots.ch

We KaosPilots live daily what we preach. And we will gladly share our learnings with you, with your manage­ment team or your entire company or organization. In addition to our inspirational speeches, you can now book one day Master classes with us and with your clients and partners!

In our world of entrepreneurial training, we know that the old recipes for success do not work anymore. And the new ones are not yet proven. Still there are people who constantly try new ways, experiment, learn and share their insights. The KaosPilots is one of these environments. Embedded in the Innovationsdorf Bern, we drive an innovative and u ­ nconventional business school.

As Organizational Development expert Jürg Krebs put it: “You guys are 20 years ahead of your time! What you are doing is absolutely amazing.” We appreciate the compliment and we believe that this is true. While the Kaos­Pilots school in Aarhus back in 1991 made a lot of noise in the media, we started in a different time and we focused on building a solid foundation with our teachings and our collaborations – both as staff team, and with our students since our first KaosPilots started studying with us in 2012.

At the KaosPilots Switzerland, we are often asked how we work and learn with our students, but also what has made us one of the most inspiring alternative business schools for change. Recently we have got more and more ­interest from companies in Austria to work with us on powerful ­topics and questions. We are asked to speak and teach about how to deal with chaos in a creative way, how to ­create self-organizing teams where the voice of every person matters and how we are living into the new educational paradigm of co-creation. Based on many requests, we have now created four ­inspiring Master classes for companies and organizations to participate in with us.

Master class 1: What is the new paradigm in education and business and how can you live into it?

The educational world is changing, so is the business world. How can you create attractive learning and working environments by combining new methods with ancient teachings from earthbound cultures? And how do you grow into success?

Master class 2: Inner Pilot – how to deal with chaos and order like a KaosPilot How do you move mindfully through chaotic times? What is needed to empower your people to navigate through challenging times? How can the old wisdom of the Delicate Lodge Teachings support you in growing strong and healthy relationships? How to deal with stress and tough situations?

Master class 3: Open innovation and healthy relationships in your business How can you foster collaboration and co-creation so that inno­vation and growth happen simultaneously in a company? How do you enable collaboration between people from different age groups and cultures? How do you build bridges and change old patterns in an organization?

Master class 4: Leading a company like a tribe – are you ready?

How to create a highly self-organizing and non-hierarchical, healthy and strong organization in which every voice matters? What does this demand from your people and your leaders?

Did I catch your interest? If so here is how it works: • E ach Master class can be booked for 1 or 1,5 days (for example a late afternoon and evening and the following day).

• W e offer our Master classes for groups of 8 to 250 participants.

• The Master class is facilitated by a KaosPilot staff member and supported by one, two or more Kaos­ Pilot students, depending on the topic and size of the client group.

• The staff member provides an inspirational speech.

• We work with a lot of humour, joy and we use creative and engaging ways to co-create new ideas and solutions with the participants.

• We invite you to come to our Innovationsdorf Bern and the KaosPilots school. As part of the Master class you get a tour through the Innovationsdorf, meet with the founders and have lunch with various entrepreneurs.

• We can also come to the venue of your choice for the Master class of your choice.

• Or we can hold the Master classes in our external classroom in Cape Town, South Africa or with our partner lab (The Lower East Lab) in Kreuzberg, ­Berlin.

Nach einem erfolgreichen Prototyp im letzten Jahr orga­ ni­ s ierten die KaosPilots Switzerland am 29.

Okto­­ ­ ber 2016 den ersten von drei KaosDays. Sie ­s tehen unter dem M ­ otto “Change”.

Was genau tun die KaosPiloten? Wie muss ich mir die Ausbildung vorstellen? Was ist Process Design? Als Antwort auf diese und andere Fragen haben wir im letzten Jahr die KaosDays ins Leben gerufen. Sie sollen Interessierten eine Super-Kurzversion der KaosPilot-Ausbildung bieten. Nachdem wir im letzten Jahr viel gelacht, gelernt und erlebt hatten, war schnell klar, dass wir auch in diesem Jahr wieder drei KaosDays durchführen wollen.

An den KaosDays können potenzielle Studierende, Geschäfts­­ partnerInnen, SponsorInnen und sonst neugierige Menschen die KaosPilots in Aktion erleben. Sie sehen, wie wir zusammenarbeiten, zusammen lernen und wie wir ­gemeinsam die Zukunft gestalten wollen. Für uns Kaos­Pilots sind die KaosDays eine Möglichkeit herauszufinden, was die Menschen in unserer Umgebung und in unserem Netzwerk ­beschäftigt, antreibt und wie wir von ihnen ­lernen können.

Wir lassen die KaosDays jeweils von den Studierenden des zweiten Jahres designen und moderieren. Das gibt ­ihnen die Möglichkeit, ihre Prozess- und Moderationsskills weiterzuentwickeln sowie in die Rolle von GastgeberInnen hineinzuwachsen, bevor sie im D ­ ezember an individuellen Projekten mit eigenen Kundinnen arbeiten werden.

Der Fokus der drei KaosDays 2016/17 ist “Change”. Das Thema wird gesellschaftlich immer relevanter und höchst unterschiedlich interpretiert und verstanden. Es beschäftigt uns KaosPilots auch intensiv: Wir interessieren uns ­dafür, wie wir Veränderungen erkennen und positiv für uns, ­unsere Communities und die nächsten Generationen nutzen und beeinflussen können.

Um herauszufinden, was wir denn eigentlich verändern wollen – im Grossen wie im Kleinen –, empfiehlt es sich, uns regelmässig mit unseren Träumen, Visionen und ­Zielen auseinanderzusetzen. Die Erfahrung zeigt, dass Menschen, die Grosses vollbracht und verändert haben, mit einer kraftvollen Vision angetreten sind und daraus einen starken Antrieb entwickelt haben, der ihnen die Energie gab, sich auch über scheinbar unüberwindbare Hindernisse hinwegzusetzen. Träume können unterschiedlichste Grössen und Dimensionen haben – das einzige wichtige Kriterium ist: sie müssen Sinn machen für die Person, die träumt.

Bei den KaosPilots beschäftigen wir uns regelmässig mit unseren Träumen und Visionen. Wir stellen uns zum Beispiel ganz konkret vor, wo wir in zehn Jahren sind, was wir dann tun und wie es sich anfühlt, das zu tun. Wir sind überzeugt, dass in unserer schnelllebigen Zeit Musse und Zeit für diese Art von Reflektion zu kurz kommen. Es ist verführerisch, von einem Projekt zum nächsten zu springen, ohne genau zu wissen, weshalb wir tun, was wir tun und wo wir damit hinwollen.

Wir halten es zudem für wichtig, über unsere Träume und Visionen zu sprechen. Viele scheuen sich davor, denn es macht uns verletzlich, wenn wir so etwas Persönliches mit anderen Menschen teilen. Über Träume zu sprechen hilft aller­dings, dass wir uns selber klarer werden über sie. Dabei entdecken wir vielleicht auch, dass wir Träume h ­ aben, die wir mit anderen teilen und wir uns zusammentun könnten, um sie umzusetzen. Und: Träume inspirieren – viel mehr als das Pläne und Zahlen jemals vermögen. Oder würde sich heute noch jemand an Martin Luther King erinnern, wenn er damals auf einer Bühne gestanden wäre und gerufen hätte: “Ich habe einen Plan!”

Wie weiter?

Träumen und Visionen zu haben, sich mit ihnen zu beschäftigen, führt noch nicht zwingend zu einer Veränderung. Als nächstes muss die Umsetzung der Vision in den ­Fokus ­rücken. Wie kann das gelingen? Wer kann mir dabei h ­ elfen?

In die Aktion gehen, auch wenn noch kein detaillierter Plan steht. Deshalb haben wir die beiden folgenden KaosDays der Umsetzung gewidmet: Am 19. November 2016 heisst es deshalb “Be the change!” und am 4. ­Februar 2017 “How to sustain the change?”.

Support a Kaospilot Our KaosPilot students all show tremendous courage by stepping into an education that is challenging for three entire years. They grow to become responsible entrepreneurs, peace makers, community builders creating sustainable change.

Southern Scholarship As a private school we need private funding to enable our students to study here. Currently we have 35 students in our training program. Eight of these are receiving a Southern Scholarship, covering their costs of living of CHF 18’000 per year, plus the training fee of CHF 16’000 per year.

Can you help support our scholarship students from Brazil, Kenya and South Africa with an amount of your choice?

These students otherwise do not have the financial possibilities to follow an education as social innovators with the KaosPilots Switzerland. However, they bring a tremendous dedication to learn and to be the change they want to see in the world.

Private loans for one of our students Several of our KaosPilot students need a private loan to make it through their three years of studies. Do you have CHF 10’000 to 25’000 on an account you may not need for the coming four to six years? Would you be willing to support one of our students by offering him or her a loan with an interest rate of 0 to 2%?

Project challenges and jobs Do you have a project challenge for one or several of our students? We are looking for assignments given to them from companies, NGOs or governmental institutions in the area of trend research, project or campaign development or business plan development. Or do you have a job or an ­internship for one of our students? Our students from abroad are allowed to work up to 15 hours per week in ­addition to their training at the KaosPilots.

Ambassadors and Sponsors for our school We are looking for people and companies or foundations who want to become our partners or ambassadors and sponsor an innovative education for young leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers. Jonas Beer

How Jonas funded CHF 18’000 Jonas Beer, one of the Swiss KaosPilots students, went online to get his tuition fees funded. He created a profile on www.splendit.ch, a Swiss start-up that connects ­students who need money with people who look for a sensible investment. Splendit works like an auction: The student states the amount he needs plus the time frame and the interest rate to pay it back. Ideally, the student starts with a maximum interest rate he is willing to pay per year, say 7%. Lenders can then invest in partial amounts towards the student’s education.

Jonas was looking for CHF 18’000 over 4 years to pay off his tuition fees for the third school year. He added his CV, a (clean) record of his debt enforcements and his (clean) ­police record to his profile to prove his reputation. He ­started off his auction with 8% and within three days there were 7 bids to complete the CHF 18’000 he was looking for, with some lenders partially outbidding others at a lower rate. On average Jonas managed to fund his studies at 7.5%.

Splendit does all the handling of the money on behalf of the students. They also take care of the encashment if needed.

The investors pay 2% of their investment in the first year to Splendit, the students pay CHF 10, as long as a loan ­remains outstanding. After the action had ended, Jonas was given a list with the addresses of the 7 people who wanted to invest in him. There was a surprise for him as one of the investors lives in Tokyo!

Florian Kübler, founder and member of the Board of ­Directors at Splendit, is happy about the first collaboration between his online platform and the KaosPilots. From the feedback he got from the investors, he knows that they were impressed by Jonas’ fresh and open way of communicating his dream and needs to become a social entrepreneur. Splendit is curious to see more support campaigns for KaosPilots.

Was brauchen Organisationen, um stark und erfreulich zu wachsen? Wie können Unternehmen die Art der Zusammenarbeit verbessern? Und wann brauchen Firmen und Teams Begleitung und Unterstützung von aussen, um echte Veränderung zu gestalten?

Wohin wir den Blick wenden, es ist überall ein ähnlicher Gegensatz zu beobachten: Einerseits wollen Unternehmen agiler und schneller werden, um erfolgreich am Markt zu sein. Andererseits rufen sie nach mehr Wertschätzung und Zeit, um einander besser zuzuhören und die wichtigen ­Aspekte der Zusammenarbeit auf gleicher Augenhöhe zu diskutieren und zu verändern.

gesund sind, wenn die Angestellten untereinander und mit ihren Kundinnen und Partnern gesunde Beziehungen aufbauen und unterhalten wollen und können – und das nicht nur in der euphorisierenden Phase des “Verliebtseins”.

Jeder einzelne Mitarbeiter und jede einzelne Mitarbeiterin muss starke Beziehungen leben und pflegen können. Und das heisst nicht nur nett zu sein. Das heisst: Abmach­ungen müssen klar sein, Vertrauen muss gestärkt werden, Konflikte müssen angesprochen und beigelegt werden. Nur gut verankerte und von allen getragene Veränderungen halten das System gesund. Und eine starke und leben­dige Zusammenarbeit erreicht nur, wer immer wieder genau hinschaut, Anpassungen und Verbesserungen vornimmt.

Viele Organisationen sind auf der Suche nach einem neuen Umgang mit Macht und Hierarchie. Denn die alten Machtpyramiden bröckeln nicht nur in der Politik. Vielerorts wird Selbstverantwortung gepredigt, aber sobald es weh zu tun und schwierig zu werden droht, ziehen sich die Beteiligten dann doch wieder in ihren Bereich zurück und machen Dienst nach Vorschrift. Viele Kundinnen und Kunden sagen uns, dass wohl vieles oszilliert, aber nichts vorwärtsgeht.

Im Zentrum unseres Ansatzes steht eine Überzeugung: Wer seine Firma weiterentwickeln will, muss sich persönlich weiterentwickeln. Es geht nicht anders. Veränderung steht und fällt mit der Veränderung der Individuen: Sie müssen sich und ihr Tun reflektieren, Erwartungen, Haltungen und Glaubenssätze überprüfen und nötigenfalls verändern. Das dauert die Zeit, die es dauert; es gibt keine Abkürzungen.

Was brauchen Unternehmen also in diesen Zeiten enormen Drucks auf Teams, Abteilungen und jede einzelne Person? Wie kann der Übergang von den Machtpyramiden zu mehr Selbstverantwortung, Respekt und Kommunikation auf Augenhöhe gelingen?

Jede Organisation muss ihre eigene, für sie passende Orga­nisations- und Zusammenarbeitsform finden. ­Ein­fach ein Konzept wie Holacracy (neue Organisationsform, bei der Mitarbeitende aller Stufen an Entscheidungen im Unter­nehmen beteiligt werden) zu übernehmen, funktioniert unserer Erfahrung nach oft nicht; Probleme zu igno­ rieren auch nicht. Was hingegen funktioniert: mit sich ­selber schonungslos ehrlich zu sein, um festzustellen, was

In what channels do you suggest to start to talk about fresh, new businesses?

I recommend that you start communicating in channels you already know how to use and you believe will fit with the message of your business; that can be sending emails, crea­ ting a simple website or blog, creating a Facebook page, establishing an Instagram account, making a business card or a little flyer – or as simple as arranging meetings and making phone calls. You could also arrange ­smaller events at your office or in your home, where you present your idea to a group of people who might be interested in supporting your idea. Start choosing two or three different ways, do that as well as you can, and carefully watch how people respond to your effort.

NEW BUSINESS #3 starts in May 2017 The next mastery training program by changels will start in the evening of March 9th and the day of March 10th, 2017 with an intro- module for interested participants. Learning about the 8 directions and what they have to offer to create a sustainable and attractive NEW BUSINESS will be a deeper foundation for the decision to start the entire 9 x 3 days training program, beginning on April 5th to 7th, 2017.

Unser Eingang nimmt Gestalt an Die neue Aussenbeschriftung ist montiert. Wir ­haben mit hellblau einen Farbakzent gesetzt, der unaufdringlich und trotzdem klar ist. Die beiden Eingänge sind gross kennzeichnet, alle Co-Workers sind an der Glasbox dazwischen angeschrieben. Anfang 2017 wird auch der Welcome Desk des Innovationsdorfs in der Glasbox eingerichtet. Mit dem Welcome Desk wollen wir für Gäste, BesucherInnen und Laufkundschaft sichtbar machen, was in diesem Haus läuft und ­heranwächst.

Neuer Guest Room zum Übernachten Bereits haben die ersten Gäste im neuen Guest Room in der ­Villa ­geschlafen. We Dialogue – eine ­ ganzheitlicher Ansatz Von Trix Angst, Kommunikationsverantwortliche Innovationsdorf

Seit einem guten Jahr ist Roger Ziegler im Innovations­ dorf als Unternehmer eingemietet. Der Arzt und Therapeut hat in der Villa einen Raum nach dem ande­ren renoviert. Was treibt ihn an?

Du führst ein sozial-medizinisches Zentrum, richtest dich an hochsensitive Menschen und betreibst ein Institut für Sterbe­begleitung. Was ist der rote Faden?

Die Idee hinter allem ist: eine wache und achtsame Begeg­ nung gestalten, denn Begegnung ist das wichtigste Heil­ mittel in Medizin, Pädagogik und Therapeutik. In der ­Präsenz zweier Menschen, die miteinander arbeiten, ­findet Transformation statt. So versuche in der psychiatrisch-psychosomatischen Praxis, im Konfliktmanagement, im Präsenz- und Meditationstraining, in der Sprechstunde für Hochsensitive oder in der Sterbebegleitung zu arbeiten.

Du hast westliche Medizin studiert, später auch ­chinesische und tibetische – wie kam es dazu?

Das Medizinstudium habe ich als Begrenzung erlebt. Als Assistenzarzt sass ich oft Menschen gegenüber, die mir Symptome beschrieben, auf die ich als westlich ausgebildeter Arzt keine Antwort hatte. Ich musste sie in meine westliche Schematik quetschen, anstatt ihrer Wirklichkeit gerecht werden zu können. Unfair. Die chinesische und die tibetische Medizin haben mein Spektrum erweitert. Mit der Psycho­ logie und der Spiritualität stehen mir weitere Linsen zur Verfügung, durch welche ich mein Gegenüber verstehen kann.

So werde ich als Therapeut nicht zum limitierenden Faktor für die Genesung des Patienten oder der Patientin.

Du arbeitest in interdisziplinären Teams?

Ja, das ist mir wichtig. Mit einen hochsensitiven Menschen z.B. suchen wir eine Beurteilung auf körperlicher, energetischer, psychologischer und spiritueller Ebene, um dann gemeinsam einen sinnvollen und machbaren Prozessweg zu zeichnen. Dieser Mensch kann sich dann mit der für sie geeignetsten Person begleiten lassen.

Dein nächstes Projekt ist Sterbebegleitung?

Ich begleite seit vielen Jahren sterbende Menschen und ihre Angehörigen. Mein nächstes Projekt ist es, eine moderne Sterbebegleitung auszugestalten. Mit einem tibetischen Lama übersetzen wir die Essenz der Tibetischen Sterbebegleitung und übersetzen sie in eine moderne, nicht religiöse Sprache. Das Ziel ist, das Sterben als Humane Wissenschaft und Anleitung zum sanften Hinübergehen zu betrachten. Ab April 2017 werde ich zusammen mit einem interdisziplinären Team eine Sterbebegleitungsausbildung für qualifizierte Laien anbieten, als neue Berufsrichtung.

Was brachte dich ins Innovationsdorf?

Ich habe NEW BUSINESS, die Weiterbildung von changels (siehe Seite 15), gemacht und war auf der Suche nach ­neuen Räumen. Die Villa hat eine ruhige Energie und ist v.a. kein medizinisches Umfeld. Die Fabrik-Ambience signa­ lisiert, dass hier ein zwischenmenschliches Handwerk und Präzisionsarbeit stattfindet. Ein spannender Ort für eine spannende Arbeit. www.we-dialogue.ch

The KaosPilots and Aikido

Aikido is part of the KaosPilots Switzerland curriculum.

Why is that? When we hear Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, say “ultimately, Aikido is love“, we jump right into the centre of this connection. Here’s why: How do you feel when you feel love – when you feel love for life, when you love what you sense, see and hear, when you love the people, the beings and everything else around you? Would you agree that it’s a kind of harmony, deep relaxation, joy and connectedness?

is strangling you. Very uncomfortable! Where does your ­focus go? Most of us focus on the hands around our neck, begin to panic, try to get these hands off. In Aikido, we learn to widen our attention to 360° – so we become aware of all the space, all the freedom our body still has to move.

With such a mindset we acknowledge the strangling as part of our present situation and move with it rather than against it. With a deep breath, relaxation and the attention on the free space, we move swiftly out of the situation.

This is where the Aikido path is pointing to. It is the practice in the dojo. We aim to relax and breathe during stressful s­ ituations or when under attack; in confusion we calm down, we maintain our balance and respond to what is.

This is going for unity, embracing what we usually call our adversary – expanding our love. It might still sound quite abstract to you. Here’s an example: Imagine someone

The same attitude that frees us from strangling, can free us from the stress and pain in our projects. One analogy is: the body might be your team and the strangling might be a date of delivery and the pressure it brings. As holistic thinkers, we aim for an attitude that can be applied in many if not all situations. And Aikido is one way to experience and embody such an attitude, through a physical practice.

Tango und Yoga im Innovationsdorf Jeweils am Mittwoch unterrichten Milevan und Martín

Die Aikido-Schule Bern feiert ihren 25. Geburtstag. Sie wurde 1991 von Renata und Dragisa Jocic gegründet. ­Beide tragen den 6. Dan Aikikai, Tokio. Dan ist die Fachbezeichnung für den Meistergrad in verschiedenen Kampfkünsten. Renata und Dragisa Jocic vereinen zusammen 80 Jahre Aikido-Erfahrung und bringen sie in ihr reichhaltiges Angebot ein. In ihrem Aikido arbeiten sie mit Prinzipien, welche stilübergreifend funktionieren und eine individuelle Entwicklung fördern, um so eigene Erfahrungen für kreative Prozesse zu benützen.

Spielraum21 – Revolution in der Schule

Seit Mitte August zieren Kreidemalereien den Eingang des Innovationsdorfs. Die Berner Innovationsschule Spielraum21 ist eingezogen und unterrichtet Kinder der Basisstufe: vom Kindergarten bis zur zweiten Klasse. Auszüge aus der Berichterstattung der Berner Zeitungen zum Schulstart.

“Drei Viertel ihres Wissens und ihrer Fertigkeiten lernen Kinder ausserhalb der Schule”, sagt Tamar Widmer, Initiantin der neuen Schule. Das zeige, dass unser Schulsystem kein optimales Lernumfeld biete. “Lernen ist dann effektiv, wenn es aus eigenem Interesse erfolgt”, sagt die Berufsschullehrerin. “Lernen muss mit Emotionen verbunden sein, damit das Gelernte bleibenden Wert hat.”

Das pädagogische Konzept hinter Spielraum21 basiert auf dem Grundsatz, dass Kinder durch Neugierde und Freude in kurzer Zeit viel lernen. “Viele Kinder verlieren im L ­ aufe der Schule ihre Verbindung zu ihren Talenten und ihrer natür­ lichen Lernfreude”, erklärt Tamar Widmer. “Dem Umstand, dass die individuelle Reife bei Schuleintritt bis zu vier Jahren beträgt und im Verlauf der Schulkarriere immer weiter zunimmt, werde zu wenig Sorge getragen. Des­wegen sollen die Schülerinnen und Schüler von Spielraum21 ihrem eigenen Rhythmus folgend lernen dürfen. “Bei uns lernen die Kinder, wozu sie reif und angeregt sind.“ Damit die Kinder trotzdem eine Bildung entsprechend dem Lehrplan 21 erhalten, werden einerseits Themenimpulse gemäss dem Lehrplan gegeben, andererseits werde die Entwicklung jedes Kindes protokolliert, damit es individuell gefördert werden kann. Talente und Interessen wollen erkannt und gefördert werden, die Kinder sollen ihr Potenzial entfalten.

Das Konzept basiere auf zeitgemässer Bildungs- und Hirnforschung, betonen die Schulgründerinnen und -gründer.

Moderne Landwirte hätten sich vom Industriezeitalter emanzipiert, setzten auf Vielfalt und Nachhaltigkeit. “Nun ist es auch in der Bildung Zeit für eine kleine Revolution, um das System aus dem letzten und dem vorletzten Jahrhundert über Bord zu werfen.“ Nach den Sommerferien ist Spielraum 21 mit einer Basis­ stufe gestartet. Dereinst soll die Schule Kindergarten bis 9.

Klasse umfassen, unterteilt in Basisstufe, 3. bis 6. ­Klasse sowie 7. bis 9. Klasse. Zu Beginn kostet das Schulgeld im Normalfall monatlich 1000 Franken. Der Schulort im Innovationsdorf Bern in ehemaligen Wifag-Räumen an der Wylerringstrasse 36, ist bewusst gewählt. Die Nachbarschaft zu den KaosPiloten, der “etwas anderen” Businessschule, auch.

Spielraum21 dockt auch an die Umgebung an: “Wir brechen die Mauern des Schulhauses nieder und bewegen uns viel draussen.“ Die Stadt Bern, das Gewerbe und die Natur hielten Angebote im Überfluss bereit. Durchlässigkeit gelte auch umgekehrt: Bei Bedarf holt Spielraum 21 Fachpersonen ins Haus.

Spielraum 21 sei “keine alternative Schule”, sondern stehe “in der Mitte der Gesellschaft”, suche den Austausch mit den schweizerischen Pädagogischen Hochschulen. Und man reklamiert für sich, junge Menschen besser als das traditionelle Bildungssystem auf die Ansprüche der modernen Wirtschaft vorzubereiten. Dafür sorgt ein interdisziplinäres Team, zu dem neben Pädagoginnen verschiedener Schulstufen auch ein Gastronom, ein KaosPilot, ein Projekt­ leiter, eine Modedesignerin, eine Psychologin und eine Yoga­lehrerin gehören. “Heute braucht es mehr als Schreiben, Lesen und Rechnen im Fremddiktat“, sagt Widmer.

“Gefragt sind Kreativität, eigenständiges Denken, Fähigkeit zur Teamarbeit.“

, choice and power

The Council Guide Training (CGT) is a pathway to wholeness for individuals, communities, businesses and educations. Sidsel Stausholm Andersen and Natalia Nowicka Gartmann who are Kaos­Pilots graduates and will be ­guides in CGT 5 in Switzerland, reflect on what CGT has brought to and changed in their lives.

Natalia: The last job I had before the Kaos­ Pilots ended in such a bad way. It was one of these re-organizations. I got a new boss, it was his first leadership position and it felt like he used it to degrade me. I was left with small assistant tasks. The thing that strikes me as I reflect back on this experience, is that I went into a big fight. I totally surrendered to the feeling of frustration and being overruled. I could just have looked for another job, so why did I cling so much to it? Well, because I could not see my choices and because I chose to entertain the drama. I ended up burning out. Having done CGT, I realize that I no longer go into unhealthy emotions so often and it is easier to see my choices clearly. I feel I am able to act and not just react to what is happening around me.

Sidsel: When I think about CGT, it comes down to three words: Freedom, choice and power. There is a part of me that somehow used to be very much tied to social images.

An image of how I should be has always existed in my life and I took this norm on.

Firstly, I needed to become aware of this

bond with the existing norms and secondly, I needed to find the strength and the tools to free myself from it. It is not self-evident that we look at our life and ourselves truthfully. We have to learn how to make a real introspection. When we do take time for it, we become aware, and this awareness creates part of the freedom. When I am free, I am a person with many more options. It is connected to what you just described. The experience that you were able to see your choice more freely, and see your choices without being so tied up in emotions. In the end, this brings a lot of power to life. I have the power to take full responsibility for my life.

and decide if the picture that we paint is the one we really like or not. The second part is about the personal work. The inner journey, where you really work with yourself, for yourself. The third part is the relat­ionship to nature and rituals… this was the part that took longest for me to connect with. Today, I understand how important rituals are for humans. I always had an uneasy relationship to spirituality. In CGT I realized that spirituality is not a religion, but that there is something to discover in the idea that there is not just us in this world, that there is something bigger.

Sidsel: I have heard that one can physically see it in our brains. That when we die and they open our brain they can see the patterns we have been thinking in. These habi­ tual ways of thinking can be traced… that is quite interesting.

Sidsel: Spirituality is a cool topic. I was working with it in an education project. I was looking into the benefit and the role of philosophy in education and what I realized is that there is a need to connect ­people to something bigger than themselves. We need places where we are not just in a conversation with our own emotions and ourselves when we define what the truth and the good is. I see a lot of selfishness being cultivated because we don’t learn to see the larger picture and don’t connect to a broader truth than the one in our own ­little world. Today the education system is putting too much focus on the individual journey.

Natalia: When I explain CGT to someone I always talk about three parts. The first part is about the tools and practices that help you work with groups and with individuals to look at one’s own life from a distance

My question is how do we keep the ability to learn about philosophy and to talk about something other than individual realities.

Let’s meet in this kind of shared space of truthfulness.

Natalia: I have always enjoyed spending time in nature… but it was on an unconscious level. Through CGT my contact with nature has become more conscious. I also like how in CGT we use nature to ­allow a different approach in how we think and ­reflect.

It helps to reshape thinking ­patterns.

No, it is not ok to comment on

my body

Every single week, grown-ups that are strangers to me make comments about my body size in a public space. I can rarely go for a run without anyone cheering at me. The first time it was fun. Then it became more and more humiliating, because this is underneath: It must be so hard for you, so I need to give you an energy boost on your way! I can, without major challenges, run 14 km. I don’t need anybody to make everyone aware that “the fat girl” has put on her running clothes. All I want is to run in peace, because I love to run.

I have always excused the comments by thinking that these people “are having a really hard time” and have tried to move on without taking it in. But I did take it in. Lately, for the first time in my life, I have shared some of these stories with some friends. First of all, they were deeply shocked that these things are happening. Secondly, they told me never to apologize for these things nor attempt to justify them. I have learned that I don’t deserve these things happening to me. I have reached the bullshit limit and I’m no longer quiet about this topic. What hurts the most is that so many people have seen and heard it without saying anything. That’s what makes me feel lonely.

Natalia: For me, this is the core of what CGT is about… you mentioned this shared space of truthfulness, and it is such a strong image. It really resonates with me.

It reminds me of the power we experience when sitting together in a circle. Not just in any circle but in a circle in which people are open and sharing their true voices.

Sidsel: There is a difference between friend­ ships and a CGT learning circle. I learned to expand the idea of friendships as I knew them. Friends are in fact people who I could spend my time with, feel acknow­ledged by and who often support me in staying the way I was. In a circle like CGT, people will support and challenge you. To accept the love that is connected with the challenge took time for me to see.

Natalia: Exactly… CGT is not just for you.

It is about looking at others, caring for ­others and supporting people in growing.

I guess we became guides because we want ­ others to grow, because we want each other to grow, and because we want to grow ourselves.

I have been working hard for the last two years to tell myself another story about who I am. It takes so much time and energy to break 25 years of stories from school, m ­ edia, society, family and friends about how I look. To overcome bullying from childhood is a battle, but the fact that grownups still haven’t learnt to respect others is a damn break in the faith of humanity. It hurts, it really does. Often I have the feeling: I will never fit in; I will never be beautiful enough to get a boyfriend; I will never fit all the nice clothes and so on. I am slowly learning that all this is not true. But it is a fight to tell yourself (better to change to “myself“) something else when so often you are (if change the “yourself” to “myself”, then change the “you are” to “I am”) told the old story again, both implicit and explicit.

All the work about learning to tell myself another story is paying off. Without having been on any silly diet even once, I have lost 30 kg in the past two years. I am eating what I want. I still have chubby proportions which I’m learning to

love every single day. But my measurement is no longer the number on the scale. Actually, I don’t think I have used a scale in 2016. My new measurement is how happy I am and how healthy I feel.

Last week, I entered a second hand store, because I ­needed a new pair of jeans. Buying jeans has always been a fearful process for me, but I managed to build up some courage and strength to deal with the many disappointments waiting for me. To my big surprise I could fit into a pair of normal­ jeans without a problem for the first time in many years. I felt like dancing out of the fitting room and yelling to the whole world that the jeans fitted me. A few moments later, I got so embarrassed with myself, because I’m still caught in the premise that the more sizes I move down, the more I would fit in the norm.

I need a daily dose of the hashtags #effyourbeautystandard and #bodypositivity to feel represented in the social media and I need public persons to tell me that I’m also beautiful.

I’m appreciating so much that this movement against body shaming has started because it helps me to build up the self-confidence that I need. It is not only about me building up self-confidence so other people’s comments won’t bother me anymore. It is even more about us all educating each other to treat each other fucking respectfully. No matter whether it is about body shaming, racism, sexism or homophobia. We all have a responsibility to react when we experience public humiliation of other people in public and private spaces, both the ‘victims’ and those who witness these phenomena.

Let’s teach each other that we are all beautiful in our own unique ways. I don’t wish anyone to have to spend 25 years thinking limiting thoughts about themselves. Enough is enough.

“I needed to find out where I want to move with this” Mona, what happened after you posted your text on Facebook?

It got shared and commented on by friends and family, then by so many people I didn‘t know. I received private messages from people who shared their stories about ­experiencing body shaming. A woman told me about how she has been body shamed by her gynaecologist; others by teachers, partners, parents... I was shocked. I was not alone.

How did you cope with that?

I really didn‘t expect that! So many people contacted me and suddenly I felt tired and overwhelmed by talking about my own and other people’s relationship to my body. At some point I also felt that others were trying to make their stories fit into mine. I had vulnerable conversations and got out of my comfort zone speaking about my body in public, not only on my private Facebook. It cost a lot of energy, presence, tears, and so on.

Then a newspaper published it, first in the paper edition and then online with a share on their Facebook. It was again shared, liked and commented wildly. That day, it was their most read article. Even more people wrote to me privately. Then two big news shows in Denmark contacted me, and I was invited to a live interview on prime time ­Danish ­national TV.

It feels important now to take a deep breath, go offline and figure out how I want to move with this. I would rather ­focus my work on creating the space for us to speak ­openly, ­honestly and vulnerably about what we are experiencing and how we are feeling. I‘m excited to see where this is going. For now, it is good for me not to know where it is taking me.

Walk the streets of

Berlin

Every year KaosPilots, participants from the NEW BUSINESS mastery training program and people from the Inno­vationsdorf Bern travel to Berlin; to discuss and work on their business ideas, to get inspiration from other projects, to meet like-minded people, to join an Urban Safari, to feel the vibe of this lovely city.

Most of them pass through the Lower East Lab in Kreuzberg. Here they find Helle Marietta and Jørgen Smidstrup. Here’s a report about their Berlin.

Walking the streets of Berlin we see a lot going on. Stuff happens on almost every corner, in every backyard. We are constantly getting inspiration from the walks and talks in the city. We love the city for the creativity that sprinkles down from the big startup cloud, love it for the diversity, the different colours, sizes, ages and intentions of the ­inhabitants. Love Berlin for what it does to our minds.

So what do we see while strollin’ around the many cobblestoned streets of Berlin?

Starting up. We see a lot of startups. Every week, new creative companies, businesses, projects and shops pop up, like dandelions that shoot up out of the pavement; it seems like nothing can keep them down. These years very much so in the neighbourhoods of Neükölln and Kreuzberg, but that can change and shift at any moment, and can ­extend to other fine parts of the city. You can walk the streets to see and follow it yourself, or you can read the countless number of blogs, articles in good magazines or follow the trends and tendencies on Facebook.

Teaming up. One very fine thing these days is the ‘habit of’ starting up with very interesting teams. We are skipping the lonely wolf period. Project makers team up with ­others that may have the same ambition, may have the same

­ unger for doing good business – but not necessarily the h exact same skills, nor the same background and nationality.

Internationalization. Another wonderful thing about these new teams is that people find each other “in mysterious ways”: creative and skilled Germans (Berliners) are teaming up with creative, skilled and ambitious people flocking to Berlin. Bakers from Italy, butchers from Poland, artists from Mexico, communication talents from ­Austria, baristas from Australia, actors from Spain, DJs from ­England, nerds from the US, project makers from ­Denmark and maybe from Switzerland… It looks like there is an openness to explore what diversity can bring to the team.

It seems like there is an invitation from the local Berliners to join the force, that the Berliners fancy the cooperation, have extra space in their team, and are just waiting for the right dude (men and women) to show up, perhaps with that good idea, or with the necessary skills, or even the missing link in his or her hand. Wonderful!

Work hard. Walk the extra mile. Startups in this city really work hard, many hours, many days per week. For these first 1, 2 or 3 years it takes a lot from you. We meet people standing at market after market with their new and fantastic bread, with their smoked meat, with their very special kimchi; we see architects and designers working late in the evening and early in the morning. And we see the beautiful smiles on the faces of those startups when they have succeeded, when they have achieved their first milestone and when they are able to write their first invoice.

What’s the next thing? The city has been flooded with coffee bars in recent years, and thank you for that, all you brave baristas! You needed that, Berlin! Ten years ago, it was hard finding a decent cup of coffee. But what will the next “coffee-thing“ be? What is that new finding, that

new wave in Berlin, that which is just obviously, somehow ­necessary – and at the same time simple to execute, not too hard to finance and easy to integrate? Will it be small (or big) places for stillness, popping up everywhere like walk-in meditation rooms? Or will it be new locations for having good talks in a new way, with all kinds of people, all kinds of nationalities? Or will it again be new places to eat or to drink – and drink what? We are looking forward to seeing what emerges, while still enjoying our damn good cup of espresso or flat white.

New way? The city is happily loaded with a lot of fine ­co-working spaces. Check them out if you want a place to work from, to start as soon as you arrive in Berlin, or when arriving at the point of wanting to begin your own journey as a startup. Also keep an eye out for a new version of how-to-work and where-to-work coming up. Can the ­co-working scene evolve into an improved form? How can the good from the open co-working environment be combined with the good from working in an intense, disciplined and perhaps silent setting? And how can you find the exact combination that suits you (and your team) perfectly?

Ask questions. Be curious. Be interested. There are tons of good stories out there, on the streets of Berlin. Stories about what drives people, for what reasons they have ­started up their businesses, why here, together with whom? Is it a family business, is it created together with good old friends, or did they meet their (future) business partner in a train, or at a bar – or at a co-working space in Berlin? Ask questions and listen to the answers: they might inspire you in many ways, on how to start and form your new business.

Keep on sharing. And when you are in business, ­remember to give something back to the big universe of stories, ­knowledge and experiences. Keep it open, both

during successful and problematic periods. Share your gained lessons, big or small, good or bad. Through the shared stories we can support and improve our common businesses. Share them with newcomers and welcome people who visit the city – Berlin can be a very inspiring place for those curious souls.

Spread the word. We see a lot of good and creative communication here in Berlin. Startups using all the new ­( social) media platforms in a lively, very strong, visual way, with easy-going, often witty texts and intros – combined with the good ol’ printed stuff, like postcards, flyers and posters, designed with passion and talent in a playful way.

We also see a domino effect happening here: when people succeed with their first thing in their new business, with their first move, suddenly the next invention and the next thing comes out way easier, like a totally natural thing.

It’s very inspiring to look for examples of where one idea ­nourishes the next.

Please come and walk the streets and look for yourself, find your own path in this lively city and enjoy your Berlin!

Andere sind allergisch auf ­ Baumnüsse, Kuhmilch oder Gluten, ich habe in 20 Jahren Journalismus eine Allergie gegen Networking-Anlässe entwickelt: Wo Menschen sich ihre berufliche Laufbahn schönreden und sich gegenseitig mit Visitenkarten eindecken, suche ich möglichst schnell das Weite. Zum Glück, sage ich mir jeweils nach gelungener Flucht, gehört es zu den Pflichten des Journalisten, Distanz zu wahren, Aussenstehender zu bleiben, sich nicht zu sehr vereinnahmen zu lassen. Und zum Glück hängen meine beruflichen Perspek­ tiven nicht davon ab, ob ich mich mit Herrn Müller oder Frau Huber gut stelle, möglichst viele Hände schüttle und mir Heldengeschichten fremder Leute anhöre.

Nun bin ich seit 5 Jahren nicht nur Journalist, sondern auch Unternehmer, s­chreibe nicht nur Interviews, Artikel und Bücher zu Berufsfragen, sondern halte auch Refe­ rate, biete Coachings an und führe viele ­Gespräche mit Menschen, die ihrer Berufung näher kommen möchten. Dabei hat sich gezeigt: Es fehlt den Meisten, die sich beruflich verändern möchten, nicht an Fleiss, Wissen oder guten Ratschlägen, sondern an passenden Austauschmöglichkeiten, an einem unterstützenden Netzwerk. Arbeitskollegen, Familie und Partnerinnen neigen bei beruflichen Veränderungen zum Bremsen und Warnen, Seminaranbieter versprechen zwar, alles sei möglich, wenn man nur fest daran glaube, müssen die Konse­ quenzen ihres platten positiven Denkens aber nicht selber tragen.

Und so kam es also, dass ich, der Networking-Anlässen wenn immer möglich fernbleibt, selber zum Veranstalter eines solchen wurde. Allein hätte ich diesen Schritt kaum gewagt, doch im Gespräch mit Matti Straub-Fischer von den changels v­ erkürzte

sich der Weg von einer vagen Idee zu einem konkreten Projekt drastisch: Wäh­ rend ich noch grundsätzliche Fragen und Bedenken erörterte, fragte er mich schon nach einem passenden Datum und empfahl darüber h ­ inaus, das Ganze als Experiment zu betrachten. So wurde das 1. BerufungsForum ausgeschrieben, ohne dass ich mir weiter den Kopf hätte zerbrechen können, und bereits eine Woche vor der ersten Durchführung waren wir mit 130 Anmeldungen komplett ausverkauft.

Als wir kurz vor Mitternacht nach der Première die Gläser und Flaschen im Innovationsdorf wegräumten, taten wir das in der schönen Gewissheit: Wenn sich Menschen in aller Offenheit über ihre Projekte und Träume austauschen, statt ihre Expertise unter Beweis stellen zu müssen, kann ein Networking-Anlass eine sehr k­raftvolle, inspirierende Sache sein. ”Das Leben ant­ wortet mit Zufällen, wenn ein Wunsch aufsteigt, der stark genug ist“, hat ­Hanna Schygulla erkannt. Solchen Wünschen Raum zu geben und somit dem Zufall ein wenig auf die Sprünge zu helfen, war eine sehr beglückende Erfahrung.
