As I reflect on the 2023–2024 school year, I am struck by the remarkable spirit of our Lowell School community. This year has been filled with both challenges and triumphs, and through it all, our students, faculty, families, and supporters have demonstrated resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to the values that define us.

Our classrooms have been alive with inquiry, discovery, and growth. From the youngest learners in our Discovery classroom to our oldest students preparing for the next steps in their educational journeys beyond 8th grade, we have witnessed incredible progress, both academically and personally. The dedication of our teachers, the curiosity of our students, and the support of our families and partners have allowed us to continue delivering an education that is both joyful and purposeful.

This year, we launched new programs, strengthened our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and deepened our focus on student well-being. These initiatives reflect our mission to nurture not only academic excellence but also the social and emotional growth of each

student, preparing them to become compassionate, engaged citizens of the world.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity and support of our donors. Your contributions have made a tangible difference in the lives of our students, from enhancing financial aid opportunities to investing in innovative classroom resources. Thanks to you, we continue to provide an environment where every child feels valued, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.

As we look ahead, I am excited about the future of Lowell School. We will continue to build on the strong foundation we’ve created together, always striving to ensure that our students receive the best possible education and opportunities.

Endowments & Major Restricted Gifts

Endowed funds provide critical, non-tuition revenue to help maintain and strengthen Lowell’s exceptional program while keeping it accessible to families with a wide range of financial resources. Gifts of any size to an existing fund are welcomed. They are a most appropriate way to honor and remember a member of the community or to further a cherished tradition or goal of the school. New donor designated funds and named funds may be created with a gift of $25,000 or more and the approval of the Gift Acceptance Committee. The following is a list of funds within the endowment.

UNRESTRICTED FUNDS

The Unrestricted Endowment for General Support offers Lowell the most flexibility to meet the present and future needs of the school.

The Debbie Gibbs Fund for Advancing Teaching and Learning is an unrestricted endowment fund for future leaders of Lowell to continue to advance Lowell’s mission.

The Gerald and Deana Stempler Fund, created in honor of their grandchildren Jacob and Benjamin Catt, provides funds for general support.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FUNDS

These funds support Lowell’s commitment to enabling students to attend regardless of their economic circumstances. Included under this category are a general fund and the following named funds.

The An-Bryce Endowment Fund was established to help families who lack financial resources but who have a desire for their children to benefit from the academic, physical, and social opportunities offered by Lowell School.

The DeVaughn Phillips Financial Aid Endowment was established in 1993 after the tragic death of a Pre-Primary School student. Earlier gifts made to the school in memory of former students Jed Nathanson and Kristoph Samborski are also part of this fund.

The Financial Assistance Fund helps Lowell meet its commitment to enable students to attend regardless of their economic circumstances.

The Financial Assistance Fund for Students of Color was established in 2017 by Elizabeth Mumford and Joe Gitchell to provide supplemental financial assistance to students of color.

The Gail Shandler Financial Aid Endowment honors Gail Shandler’s 23 years as Director of Lowell.

The John Wiebenson Campership Fund honors the life of John Wiebenson by providing financial assistance for children referred to Lowell’s summer program by social service organizations.

The Phillips-Murray Foundation Fund was established as part of the 30th Anniversary Campaign to provide financial assistance for students of color.

The Schear-Kaempfer Fund was established during the 2003–2004 academic year as part of the Campaign for Lowell: Strengthening Minds, Ensuring Equity, Honoring Individuality.

FACULTY AND STAFF SUPPORT FUNDS

These funds support professional development and competitive salaries for faculty and staff.

The Abigail Wiebenson Fund for Teacher Salaries honors Abigail’s 19 years as Director of Lowell.

The Founding Teachers’ Fund for Faculty Salaries supports faculty salaries and honors founding teachers Theresa Anderson, John Bijarney, and Dottie Podgorny

The Theresa Anderson Chair of Mathematics Fund honors a Lowell legend and helps ensure the school will be able to continue to offer a math program worthy of Theresa’s legacy of innovation.

The Theresa Anderson Faculty Enrichment Fund is for faculty personal growth and professional advancement opportunities.

INVESTMENT STATEMENT

Lowell’s Endowment is managed by the Investment Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Trustees, subject to Board-approved guidelines. It is diversified to ensure that adverse or unexpected results for one security class will not have an inordinate detrimental impact on the entire portfolio. Currently, 8.5% of the trailing three-year average of total assets is budgeted to fund operations of the school. The cumulative rate of return on our investment assets for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2024, is 13.09%.
