Lowell Alumni “Lead-let”

Issue No. 8 | Fall 2024

Traditions and Tributes

The school year is racing by with beloved traditions and new developments alike We began the Fall with an AllSchool Gathering, kicked off with welcoming remarks by Head of School Donna Lindner and the singing of school favorite “Open The Door”. Throughout the Fall, students have had the opportunity to connect with students across divisions in the Buddy system. Staring in Pre-Primary, Lowell students pair up with a buddy from another grade, and they meet regularly throughout the school year. They keep that same buddy until the older student graduates in 8th grade...and they graduate to being the buddies for the new class of Pre-Primary students. Practicing these leadership skills is an important part of our curriculum, showing students how to build and nurture relationships and impact their community.

On November 15, current families, members of the faculty, and staff gathered for the new scoreboard dedication in honor of beloved Doug Nowlin. Jesse Gaylord, Director of Athletics, and Donna Lindner, Head of School shared anecdotes honoring Doug’s legacy. Alumni Matthew Hurvitz (‘23), and current 5th graders Noa Fleischer and Elias Scherb shared memories about Doug and how Doug taught them to use the original scoreboard and some of the life lessons they learned from Doug. Alumni families are welcome to come see the scoreboard on their next visit to Lowell.

Milestones and Accomplishments

Shia Levitt (PP '82) is living in Brooklyn and has been a longtime public radio reporter/producer and editor (formerly at WAMU and freelance for NPR, Marketplace, etc.). She launched and currently directs a project that enlists college journalism students to help local newsrooms fill gaps in coverage of underreported communities. They train people on Solutions Journalism and a depolarization reporting strategy. She will be speaking on Monday, December 9 about depolarization reporting strategies called Complicating the Narratives, and journalists and storytellers are encouraged to register.

Fall Bazaar Fun

On October 19, 2024, the Lowell community enjoyed beautiful weather at the Fall Bazaar hosted by the Lowell Parent Community. Kids were delighted by the attractions and games, while families enjoyed the ice cream and All Set Food Trucks. Alumni could be spotted mingling with each other, in the potato sacks, in the B-CC Jazz Band Swing Set (Adam Slagle ‘22), and face painting (Elvy Engdahl ‘23). It is always wonderful to see our alumni back on campus at our school events.

He was a member of the After Care team, a fan-favorite summer camp counselor, and an occasional guest teacher in our Primary School, Carlos was a member of the Lowell community for most of his life.
