Review: The Crook Bar They say that ‘variety is the spice of life’, and that’s exactly why I love tapas! A little bit of ‘this’ and a little bit of ‘that’ brings a wide array of flavours, textures and smells to the table. So when I heard there was a new tapas bar in town, I just had to be one of the first through the door. The Crook Bar, in Bridge of Allan, opened its doors in early October 2016 when owners Tony and Chelsey brought a bit of Spain, along with fresh décor, family friendly fun and genuine warmth to the previous ‘Crooked Arms’. As a past resident of Bridge of Allan, I was worried that the poor reputation of the prior establishment had carried forward in some way, however I’m happy to say The Crook Bar is all new. With a clean, fresh and semi modern styled seating area accompanying the rustic wood and stone work surroundings, The Crook Bar is very inviting and to top it all – dogs are welcome too, with bowls, water and biscuits being provided free of charge! Tapas is sociable. Instead of tucking into

a full plate of food - perhaps not coming up for air - smaller portions, which are typically served to you at regular intervals rather than all at once, force you to pause, savour, chat and enjoy - not only the food, but the company you’re in too. Originating in Spain, Tapas was traditionally served to accompany drinks from a bar which is very in keeping with Tony and Chelsey’s philosophy as they host an open door policy to those who just seek a drink or two, as well as those who come to dine. From top quality sharing platters served with warm bread to hot and cold authentic dishes to choose from there is something for everyone including those with food allergies or vegetarian, vegan and gluten free preferences. Personally I recommend the goat’s milk cheese, and warm chorizo! For more information check out The Crook Bar online at thecrookbar.com, via Facebook @thecrookbar, or better still – pop in and share a selection. Enjoy!

Budget buster lentil soup by LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE At around 20p per serving, this soup will give you a hug when times are tight. INGREDIENTS: 200g/7oz red lentils 1 carrot (65g/2oz) 1 onion (120g/4oz) 1 ¼ litres/2 ½ pts vegetable stock Juice of half a lemon Salt, pepper, cumin powder and chilli powder, to taste

METHOD: 1. Peel and finely chop the onion and carrot. Put into a large saucepan with the stock and lentils. Simmer, covered, for 25 minutes until the lentils are disintegrating. Allow to cool, then liquidise. 2. Reheat to serve and adjust seasoning with lemon juice, salt, pepper, ground cumin and ground chilli. * Cook’s tip: It’s worth making double quantities and freezing this soup in small portions. Don’t miss out the lemon, it makes all the difference. Other vegetables could be chopped up and cooked with the lentils, but don’t include potatoes as they will tend to make the consistency gluey.

Accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes, bars, sporting facilities, shops and a golf course are all available in Dunblane, making it an excellent place to take a short break. The town also boasts many celebrated attractions including the popular Gold Postbox and stunning Dunblane Cathedral. Re-painted following Andy Murray’s first

Wimbledon victory in 2012, the Gold Postbox has become the number one selfie spot in town (be sure to post yours on the Discover Dunblane Facebook and Twitter pages). From the postbox, you can see the majestic Dunblane Cathedral. Dunblane Cathedral, built upon a site first established by St Blane around the year 600, is one of the few surviving medieval churches in Scotland. The building is largely 13th century in date, though it incorporates an originally free-standing bell-tower of 11th century date on its south side. This tower was increased in height in the 15th century, a change clearly visible in the colour of the stonework, and in the late gothic style of the upper storey's windows. The cathedral stands serenely amid a clutch of old-world buildings, among them the 17th century Dean's House, which houses Dunblane Museum. The unassuming exterior is dwarfed by the tardis

It's All Childs Play: January Blues by SUE GASCOYNE Picture a grey January day and kids going crazy from being cooped up indoors. Children it seems are immune to ‘bad weather’, but without sun or snow to tempt us out of our cosy centrally heated homes, we adults sometimes need a nudge. If you’re looking for some inspiration on those cold grey January days, then mother of two and author Sue Gascoyne is on hand with some tried and tested fun ideas for things to do outdoors: Make a mud pit as this is great for splashing in, mixing up hearty concoctions with old pots and pans and making mud pies. Go puddle jumping as there’s something irresistible about cracking the glass-like layer of ice on a puddle. Add powder paints for some fun welly printing! In Winter birds can really struggle to find enough food to eat so why not make bird

cakes and encourage an interest in bird spotting? Heat up some lard and carefully mix with bird seed. Children can create a tally to record and identify the winged diners or why not get involved in a national Birdwatch campaign. Fill an old ice cube tray with mud and leave outside overnight to freeze. Turn the mini bricks out for lots of building fun. Go on a family walk, armed with a list of things for you all to spot. Include a mix of unusual as well as unexpected things that will add challenge and excitement. One of the best things about getting cold outdoors is the pleasure of warming up afterwards with a cup of hot chocolate and a roaring fire. There’s nothing like the tingle of cold cheeks to make you feel alive, so what are you waiting for, the outdoors awaits!

The pain clinic is designed to determine how much your pet is suffering.

from injury or secondary to conditions like osteoarthritis. Muscular pain can be more painful than the primary condition. Post- Operative Pain Control can help speed up post-operative recovery and improve patient comfort. Trauma may include physical injury such as fractured bones or muscular strains. Working dogs or agility dogs can also present with muscle fatigue. Unknown Cause Of Pain - the integrated approach Sarah uses can help determine the source of pain and therefore look at treatment options.

What conditions can be treated? Osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions. The clinic can assess your pet and see if anything more can be done to help. Neuropathic pain arises from nerves or from abnormalities in central processing. Often behavioural changes can be an indication of this pain. Muscular pain can be debilitating and primarily occurs

Firpark Ski Centre

INTERVIEW WITH SKI INSTRUCTOR

Firpark Ski Centre at Firpark in Tillicoultry offers dry ski slopes with dendix matting and a Poma Button Tow designed to teach children and adults the techniques of skiing and snowboarding. The instruction team of over 25 instructors is led by Senior Instructor Sharon Crossan. We have asked Sharon a few questions about her job and her passion for ski. How did you first get introduced to skiing? I was introduced to skiing at Firpark Ski Centre when I was 14 years old. After a 5 year hiatus, when I started again at 23 skiing became an important part of my life and my career. What is it that has attracted you to skiing, what keeps you motivated? Initially I loved the excitement of sliding and going fast, and learning how to turn. What kept me motivated was the challenge of improving my skills, getting qualified as an instructor and eventually being a Trainer for the British Association of Snowsport Instructors and Snowsport Scotland. I love sharing my passion for skiing and introducing skiing to beginners and seeing them develop over years really is the best job ever! What is your role at Firpark Ski Centre? My role at Firpark Ski Centre is that of Senior Instructor, which involves planning and organizing all the programmes which Firpark offers, responding to customer enquiries and managing my ski instructors - a very important aspect to the smooth running of the Ski School.

How is skiing on plastic matting different from skiing on snow? Skiing on snow is always better than plastic matting however, the dry slope environment is the perfect opportunity to develop skiing skills to a high standard so that when you next ski on snow you can experience more challenging terrain and snow conditions. Not to mention a dry slope gives the enjoyment of skiing all year round, not just in winter. What can you tell readers about the activities at Firpark? We offer skiing and snowboarding lessons for all ages from 3 years up in different formats to suit our diverse range of clients. We run Learn to Ski classes during term times, Holiday Ski Schools in all the school holidays, Private Lessons as well as Individual Lets for groups who wish to ski with their own families and friends. Tubing is also offered for birthday parties and team building sessions - this is available on Saturday and Sunday evenings and other times on request. All lessons are delivered by highly qualified staff who are friendly, approachable, professional and enthusiastic, and who all love to share their passion for skiing with their learners.

Looking for something to boost your immune system; get your skin glowing; sort out your list of aches and pains and help you start the New Year feeling and looking great? We’ve just opened Stirling’s first purpose built hot yoga and suspension training studio, HEAT FITNESS, offering plenty of classes; changing rooms and showers; a chill out area; yoga clothing and weekend workshops. It’s the perfect time of year to start afresh and help your body get back some balance after a hectic festive season. Founders of Heat Fitness, Juliette Cassidy and Jack Paton said: ‘We remember our first ever Hot Yoga class; it was like nothing we’d ever done before! We took part in a Bikram yoga class, which includes 26 postures done twice, in a room heated to 40 degrees with 40% humidity. We walked out of class and just looked at each other! We were physically and mentally elated just to get to the end of class, but later as we chugged down some much needed coconut water and cooled down, we both said: ‘we can’t wait to do this again’. That was over five years ago and following hundreds of sweat inspired yoga sessions plus some intensive teacher training in Los Angeles and London, we’ve now brought hot yoga to Stirling. Coupled with TRX suspension training, our goal is to create a balanced and complete workout, where yoga and fitness runs alongside each other. At Heat, you have the opportunity to work on your strength, flexibility and cardio. Our introduction deal ‘20 days for £20’ allows you to take part in as many yoga

and TRX sessions as you like and really get a feel for what we are offering. Our background is in sport and fitness, but our journey led us to hot yoga, which helped us heal old injuries, release tension from our body and correct a few muscle imbalances and overuse irritations. An added side effect to all this hot yoga was a glowing skin, because, yes, you sweat a lot and it’s very detoxifying and addictive! The heat intensifies everything and your heart and lungs get a good workout, whilst you work every muscle in the body, stretching and strengthening. Initially for us, the training effect from both the heat and the postures made us go back week after week, but the real magic happened when we saw the benefits of a calmer and clearer mind, a stronger immune system and improved health and vitality. Our teachers are all hot yoga qualified and passionate about what they do. We offer three of the leading hot yoga sequences available across the world today: Bikram, Fiercegrace and Absolute Hot Yoga. Celebrities and sports stars love it and use it to their advantage and in fact both Andy Murray and Serena Williams have acknowledged how Bikram hot yoga has helped them in the past. If you’ve never tried hot yoga before, don’t worry, it’s perfect for beginners; in fact Bikram calls it the beginners’ series. For those who prefer a more gentle approach, we are also running warm gentle Hatha yoga classes and Yin restorative yoga sessions and in fact our monthly candlelit Yin with yoga nidra,

where we focus on stillness and softness, will be the perfect counterbalance for the yang (strength and fitness) in your life. Our TRX sessions are born out of a passion for helping our clients build a solid foundation for life, work and sport. We knew the minute we tried the TRX this was something we’d be doing forever! It was a ‘game changer’! We’ve spent the past 10 years running group TRX classes in Australia and training instructors to do the same and we are excited to be running these sessions in Stirling. We know that the TRX delivers tangible results for everyone, from post-natal mums looking to tone up and strengthen their pelvic floor to an athlete looking for an edge. We’ve worked with clients rehabbing their body following knee surgery and older adults working on

balance and stability and that’s the beauty of TRX, three generations can work safely and effectively alongside each other. We love it and we hope you will too! Alongside the Hot Yoga and TRX we also offer Jab boxing for fitness and circuit classes incorporating TRX, concept rowers, spin bikes, slam balls, kettle bells, battle ropes and more. Our boxing classes are low impact and high cardio and our circuit sessions are aimed at every fitness level. If you are looking to improve your cardio in a fun, safe and effective environment, these are the sessions for you. Jo Pudelko Jewellery Classes New jewellery classes are launching this January in the Victoria Hall in Dunblane. Why not treat yourself to a break from your busy schedule and take a class with the Central Scotland School of Jewellery? Learn to make rings, bangles, earrings and pendants in brass, copper or silver. The classes are suitable for complete beginners or for students with previous jewellery making experience who wish to build their skills.

The classes also make the perfect Christmas gift. Gift certificates are available for a block of classes, a weekend workshop or for a set amount. Upcoming weekend workshops include a stone setting and a stacking ring workshop. Please see www.centralscotlandschoolofjewellery. co.uk for more details or call Jo on 07775 843 872 if you have any questions.

Tutor Jo Pudelko has taught evening classes in Edinburgh for the past ten years and also teaches jewellery at Edinburgh College of Art. Jo says “It was an evening class in jewellery that sparked my own interest in the subject which led me to apply to Art College to study for a degree in Jewellery & Silversmithing. After working and teaching in Edinburgh for many years, I relocated my workshop to the local area and was so surprised to find out that there were no classes running here.” “Students find learning jewellery skills really rewarding – there is a steep learning curve but students are amazed at how quickly they can produce really professional looking pieces of jewellery. Making creative work is also a chance for people to take some time for themselves and really disconnect from a busy week.” “Using the creative part of your brain really does help you switch off from the stresses of daily life! I have students in my Edinburgh evening class who have been coming for more than five years. They have already mastered the skills they need to produce amazing work but they keep coming back as they really value having that time in their week that is devoted to creative making.” The inaugural term will run from 12th January to 30th March 2017 with a half term break on the 16th February. All tools, equipment and materials are provided with the exception of precious metal which can be purchased at the class. More importantly tea, coffee and cake will be provided!

Interview with Love Local Mag's 2017 Cover Photographer: David Robertson, Scot-Image.com We are delighted to feature David Robertson, photographer extraordinaire and Love Local Magazine’s Local Cover Photographer of the year. We have asked him a few questions to find out more about his passion for photography.

and exposure settings give me complete control over the image. Photoshop and Capture One are my main bits of software. But the best bit of kit I own is my eye!

How did you develop an interest in photography and do you have any formal training?

My favourite image is usually a recent one and I'm really happy with an image I took in Torridon this autumn. I spent a couple of hours looking at erratic boulders above Upper Loch Torridon on a cloudy afternoon, eventually finding this scene. After setting the camera up it was just a case of hoping and waiting for the light to develop. And it did! (Bealach-na-Gaoithe-Torridon image)

I bought my first camera to record my Munro bagging exploits and am entirely self-taught. My first published work was in photography magazines but the best advice and help I received was from the owners of The Still Moving Picture Company, a stock agency based in Edinburgh, now sadly closed. With their help I very quickly became a full time photographer. This was before the days of digital photography. What sort of work do you specialize in and how would you describe your style? Landscape photography is what I enjoy most. My style? Stock photography encourages taking images quickly and in quantity but I prefer a more relaxed method, setting up the tripod and waiting for the light, for that magic moment. What technology, software and camera gear do you use to help you achieve the best photographs? Digital cameras are great but soulless! I now use a Sony A7ii with medium format Mamiya and Pentax 645 lenses attached via tilt/shift adapters. A tripod, manual focus

30 | LOVE LOCAL

Among your works, which one is your favourite and why?

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started? The value of a really good tripod. What advice would you have for amateur photographers who want to up their game? I'm not keen on the "amateur" or "professional" tags. There are some amateurs out there producing some really fine images, as good as any professional. But I'd encourage anyone wanting to improve not to worry about having the latest gear but develop an eye for composition. If you would like to further admire David’s photography or order a print from his portfolio, please visit www.scot-image.com.

The Curious Thing The Curious Thing is Stirling’s newest social enterprise, offering a diverse range of evening classes for grown-ups to explore new passions, hobbies and skills. Its mission is to provide regular opportunities for adults to explore all kinds of fascinating topics, and to do so in a sociable, relaxed and – above all – a really fun environment. “I believe passionately that learning is an intrinsically positive thing – not only for giving the brain something to chew on, but also in terms of meeting new people, sharing thoughts and ideas and driving curiosity and concern for the world around us” – Kathryn Welch, Founder of The Curious Thing. As a social enterprise, all profits from The Curious Thing will be reinvested to provide free learning opportunities for adults who’ve struggled in formal education, working with local charities to make learning available to all.

Q&A with Kathryn Welch, Founder of The Curious Thing Where did the idea for The Curious Thing come from?

into the world from people with a real passion for sharing their knowledge. What makes The Curious Thing’s business model distinctive? As a social enterprise, all profits from The Curious Thing are reinvested to achieve social change. All profits are used to provide free classes for people who haven’t had a brilliant experience of formal education, and we’ll be working with local charities to make sure as many people as possible are supported to access these opportunities. Who’ll be teaching the classes? Classes at The Curious Thing are taught by all kinds of people with a passion for everything from fashion to fan belts. Our tutors are friendly, engaging and enthusiastic, and are able to share their knowledge in a really accessible and hands-on way. If you have a skill you’d like to share, please get in touch! What’s next?

The Curious Thing grew from a desire to create a much more exciting range of evening classes for grown-ups. In particular, I wanted to create sociable places for people to come together to learn from passionate, inspiring tutors, and to access all kinds of classes that are affordable, hands-on and genuinely fascinating.

The Curious Thing’s classes begin in March 2017, with more classes added to the website regularly. Join us on social media to keep up to date, book onto the classes via our website, and see you soon!

Traditional Building Health Check The Traditional Buildings Health Check Scheme (TBHC) is the first of its kind in Scotland, a 5-year pilot scheme open to all owners of traditional building types within the Stirling City boundary. The TBHC is a membership based service providing impartial and expert advice on the maintenance and repair of the external fabric of traditionally constructed buildings. By joining the scheme traditional buildings owners could save money, safeguard their building’s condition, be energy efficient, sustainable and support skills training and employment in the local area. The scheme is operated on a not-forprofit basis by registered charity the Stirling City Heritage Trust and funded by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Scotland. Opened to members in 2014 with over 150 members throughout the city from as central as King Street to as far out as Cambusbarron; the TBHC has seen considerable success in the Stirling City area. Most members have had a full comprehensive inspection carried out on their property allowing them to make informed decisions regarding repair work to their building. Members also have access to conservation experts in the TBHC team to discuss any issues regarding maintaining their traditional properties. In addition, once an inspection has been completed TBHC members have the opportunity to apply for the TBHC grant which Mr Cramb, a member of the scheme since May 2015 discusses below:

My wife and I joined the Traditional Buildings Health Scheme as we live in a house that is over 125 years old and we wanted to maintain it to standard so that it can continue to be here for another 125 years. We believed that the TBHC scheme could help us achieve these aims with their expertise and knowledge and they have not let us down. We had an inspection carried out which pointed out many things that needed to be done and we set out to have all of our sash and case windows repaired and we received a 50% grant to carry out this work which was a great help. We applied again and have been granted a second 50% grant to carry out work on our roof. Once this work has been completed, the house will be in much better condition and able to survive the elements. The expert advice and help provided by the TBHC, along with the grants are second to none and both my wife and I have nothing but praise for the TBHC scheme. We would advise anyone who is eligible for the TBHC Scheme to join as it can only help you improve your property and help preserve Stirling’s beautiful traditional buildings. With two years left of the pilot scheme, the main focus is for the TBHC scheme to reach as many new members as possible in this time. This will ensure the longevity of as many traditional buildings in Stirling as possible, in the hopes the TBHC can expand and continue into the future. For further information call the Traditional Building Health Check team on 01786 498463, email sara@scht.org.uk or go to www.traditionalbuildingshealthcheck.org

Home Improvements Now that the festivities are over many families’ thoughts turn to 2017 and the things that they didn’t manage to organise last year, for example that sunroom extension that helps connect the house to the garden and enhance those pleasant summer months.

and building warrant applications process can run concurrently, however even then you should allow several months for these statutory approvals to be put in place.

When undertaking a project such as this it is important to understand the timescales involved moving from your initial design ideas through to starting the works.

Once you have chosen your preferred builder there is often a further period of negotiation finalising those important details before the builder is then ready to start.

Now is the time to start planning your project for the summer. From the appointment of your architect you should allow two months to agree the design and submit for planning approval. Most families have busy lives and can only manage time at weekends to review design proposals, so it is very easy for the weeks to disappear. With good organisation the planning

Next you have the tender procedures, when the plans are sent out to several builders for pricing.

Overall it typically takes around six months from inception to starting to build. It is essential to determine your project ambitions and financial budget as early as possible when embarking on any construction project, big or small. Don’t hesitate to call your local chartered architect for a free design consultation to help develop your ideas.

Protect your home this Winter Winter is fully installed and although the festive season is over we are still facing a few months of cold weather. Maybe the quiet and cold time of the year is a good opportunity to assess how your home is faring against it. Waterproof Your Home There is nothing worse than damp at this time of year (ok, perhaps we can think of a few worse things) so make sure you inspect your roof and tackle any repairs it might need before they become an issue. Make sure you have a roofing professional inspect and repair any damage. Sort Plumbing Issues If plumbing in your home makes strange noises, it is probably the cold weather putting extra strain on them. This would be a good time to have a plumber around to check or replace any parts that have cracked to avoid the risk of flooding.

Service Your Central Heating During the cold months your central heating will be more used and it is known that boilers collapse on the coldest night of the year. It is best not to wait until then to have your central heating serviced by a professional, but having regular checks during the year. Add Extra Window Treatments One of the small improvements you could make at this time of year is to add extra warm window treatments to your home. You might find January sales handy for thicker, warmer curtains to keep the cold at bay. This might be a good time to assess your insulation and consider speaking to professional about options and grants, clean up your fireplace and hire a chimney sweep, as well as clearing up the garden from dead leaves and branches, plant bulbs in early February so that come Easter your garden will become a field of colour.

I’ve always liked the idea of New Year’s resolutions even if I wasn’t completely successful in keeping them. Taking stock of where you are and what you need to change; all with an eye to improvement or the realization of a goal or two. Here are a few suggested gardening goals for 2017:

Plant more herbs and use them in cooking. Herbs are beautiful and easy to grow. Try growing a few annual herbs such as basil or 'Fernleaf' dill; or a few perennial herbs such as sage or oregano. You will be amazed how much better the taste is compared to dried herbs.

Use more compost during planting to enrich the soil. Rather than relying on synthetic fertilizers to "feed" plants, use compost to "feed" the soil. Compost contains important plant nutrients, but also helps to improve soil structure and water retention.

Encourage the good bugs by planting appropriate flowers such as alyssum and asters. Insect predators and parasites are help in the battle of the bad bugs.

Be more realistic about the amount of time available for gardening and enlist

Enjoy gardening and appreciate your garden more. Sit in your garden every day. Ok, with our weather maybe every week... Ok, at least once a month!

Winter Safety Check £29.99 at Hardie Winter brings beautiful crisp mornings and frozen cars in our driveways. We scrape ice from our windscreens and drive in increasingly hazardous conditions. Even if your car’s service history is fully up to date, it’s always a good idea to get that extra reassurance. Here at Hardie of Stirling we recommend a 23-point Winter Safety Check. For £29.99 we’ll check your tyres, lighting, wipers, brakes, exhaust, steering, suspension, fluid levels and battery. Then top up 500ml of key fluids, such as engine oil, brake fluid, anti-freeze, screen wash and power steering fluid. As a gift you’ll receive a FREE Winter Safety Pack with ice scraper, LED torch, hi-visibility vest, nitrile-coated protective gloves and trigger spray de-icer. A Winter Safety Check can be carried out on all makes and models of cars as can an MOT at £39.99. Phone Service Reception on 01786 451616 to book. An appointment takes thirty minutes and can be carried out whilst you wait in our café area with a hot coffee. WARM REASSURANCE ON WINTER ROADS - Hardiemotorgroup.com

TYRES

• Check your tyre pressure every two weeks including the spare

48 | LOVE LOCAL

Top Tips

• Check the tread depth, look for cuts, cracks and other signs of damage • Replace your tyres when tread depth goes beneath 3mm (legal minimum is 1.6mm)

WIPER BLADES

• Check your wiper blades at least once a year • Use a good-quality additive in your screen wash to help wipers work well • Ineffective wipers fail MOTs and badly deteriorated wipers can scratch your windscreen

BRAKES

• Braking components wear over time so it’s important to have the braking system checked and maintained on a regular basis • Replace brake fluid every two years • Any braking system is only effective with shock absorbers and tyres that are in good condition • Check your brake fluid level – top the reservoir up to max if required - if topups are frequent there could be a leak or worn pads and shoes Hardie technicians are happy to check your tyres free of charge and fit wiper blades for only £27.
