Loaded Baby Potato Bites New potatoes make the perfect base for any number of delectable savoury nibbles. Here are three great topping ideas but use up any leftover ready cooked potatoes that you have. Each filling recipe makes enough for 24 tiny new potatoes. They can be made ahead of time and cooked from frozen. Time: 20 - 30 minutes

Skill Level: Advanced

Ingredients for a Turkey & Corn Topping: 250g cooked turkey, cut into small pieces 125g can of sweet corn 2 tablespoon cream cheese 25g grated strong hard cheese 3 spring onions, finely chopped Salt Ground black pepper Method 1. Boil, steam or roast the potatoes until just tender, drain and set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Halve and use the handle end of a teaspoon to make a little indentation into the flesh of the cooked potato. Save any scraps of potato to mix into the filling. 3. Mix together your chosen filling (see below) and use a teaspoon to top each potato with a little filling. 4. Preheat the oven to 200C (400F) mark 6. Place the potatoes in an oiled oven tray. Cook uncovered, for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and hot, remove and serve warm.

Ingredients For a Bacon & Cheese Topping: 150g bacon 25g butter 1 tablespoon mustard 50g strong hard cheese, grated (use whatever you have got in the fridge) 3 tablespoon sour cream or crème fraiche 2 spring onions, finely chopped Ground black pepper Turkey and Corn Topping: Combine the reserved potato flesh with the chopped turkey meat and remaining ingredients in a medium bowl. Spoon the filling onto the potatoes. Continue as instructed above. Bacon and Cheese Topping: Cook the bacon in a large frying pan until crisp, drain on kitchen paper and chop finely. Add the reserved potato flesh in a medium bowl with butter, mustard, half the cheese and sour cream; stir in bacon and spring onions. Season with black pepper. Spoon the filling onto the potatoes; sprinkle with the remaining grated cheese and a couple of pieces of bacon to garnish.

* 6 | LOVE LOCAL

Serving size: 24

To freeze ahead: Complete the recipe up to the end of step 3. Put onto a flat tray and freeze until solid. Gather the potatoes up and pack into an airtight container label and freeze for up to 3 months. To use: Cook the potatoes from frozen and complete the recipe from step 4. Allow 5 minutes extra cooking time.

OVER 20 DIFFEREN T TYPES OF SAUSAGE S

LOVE FOOD & DRINK

In Praise of Sausages by Rita Williams-Hall Nearly every part of the world has sausages of some type. The humble banger has been around for thousands of years and one of the first documented mentions of sausages was in Homer’s The Odyssey, around the 8th century BC. The word sausage is derived from the Latin for salt and they were originally made as a way of preserving lesser cuts of meat with herbs and spices. At first they were encased in animal intestine, but there are a variety of skins used now, including vegetarian and synthetic. You’re no longer limited to meat sausages either; vegetarian, seafood and cheese are all common fillings for sausages these days. Sausages are extremely versatile. They can be served at breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a snack. You can have them with chips, mashed potatoes, in toad-in-the-hole, on the barbecue, in pasta, wrapped in bacon at Christmas, hot or cold. And that’s just the standard variety! It is estimated the UK has around 400 varieties of sausage (compared to Germany with around 1200) from haggis to black pudding to the standard pork sausage. You can probably find around 10 different varieties on your supermarket shelves, and that’s not including international varieties. Even in the UK, you can get saveloys, chipolatas, hot dogs and so on. You have probably heard of the Cumberland and Lincolnshire sausages. But have you heard of the Manchester sausage (containing cloves, ginger, nutmeg, mace and white pepper)? Or the

Oxford one (sage, a touch of marjoram, lemon pork and veal)? There’s even a Marylebone one (mace, sage and ginger)! Pork and apple sausages are a favourite in the West Country, and what better to wash it down than a glass of scrumpy? The regional differences are down to the meat and blends of herbs and spices used, and you’re most likely to find them at specialist butchers in the relevant areas. The term ‘banger’ has been around since at least 1919, but became popular after World War II, when it is said that scarcity of meat led to added water in the sausage, which expanded against the tight skin on heating, and caused the sausage to explode with a loud bang! Sausages are experiencing a bit of a revival at the moment, with more exotic fillings and better quality meat. Smoked or continental type sausages such as chorizo, salami and pepperoni are becoming common ingredients in British cooking. Germany alone has 1200 varieties of sausage, you’re bound to find something you like! Premium sausages will have no less than 70% meat, and the other ingredients will be of the highest quality. No longer is a sausage destined just for mash and onion gravy though that’s still my favourite way of scoffing them!

Children's Activity: Paint an Autumn Leaf Tablecloth With the arrival of Autumn comes a rainbow of beautiful colours. Kids are guaranteed to get into the Autumn spirit as they use beautiful fall colors to paint and print leaves. The end result is a one-of-a-kind tablecloth, perfect for your next party. What You Need: Plain white cotton tablecloth Fabric paints Paintbrushes Leaves Scrap paper What You Do: 1. Head outdoors with your child and collect leaves from around your garden or neighbourhood. While you’re walking, see how many different colors your child can find in the falling leaves. 2. After you've collected a variety of leaves, head home and place the leaves on the work area with your tablecloth. Have your child think about their leaf tablecloth design. Do they want to cover the tablecloth with leaves, make a border of leaves, or just create a random design? 3. Take a look at the leaves and have your child name the main colours they see. Which colors do they think best represent Autumn? After they picks to best colours, help them choose matching paint colours and pour them onto paper plates.

5. Then, lift up the leaf and press it onto the white tablecloth, gently pressing over the top of the leaf with a clean piece of scrap paper (like a stamp.) 6. Help your child slowly lift the leaf, leaving a beautiful printed leaf picture! Encourage them to continue painting and printing until their desired design is complete. 7. Finally, follow the directions on the fabric paint to set the paint. 8. When the tablecloth is all done, put it on your table to get your house all ready for the Autumn season!

4. Next, have your child place the leaf on a piece of scrap paper and use a paintbrush to paint the leaf.

LOVE BUSINESS

What is Content Marketing? by KST MARKETING Content marketing is one of these buzz phrases that has been bouncing about in the industry with businesses big and small trying to grasp the concept and integrate it into their process flows or completely ignore and hope it will go away. At KST Marketing, we are huge believers in the benefits content marketing can bring to our clients and here we explain why.

More than that, content marketing helps you with artwork, images and all visuals that make social media so wildly successful and addictive. SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF VARIOUS DISCIPLINES

With content marketing you create awesome stuff that is meaningful to your clients while representing your brand and make sure you distribute it for maximum exposure. Easy peasy, right?!

Content marketing might not be a completely new and alien concept, as it integrates various well-known disciplines: communications and graphic design, search engine optimization and social media, email marketing and demand generation. The innovation lies in combining all these disciplines articulately and skillfully to bring you the best benefits.

HOW CONTENT MARKETING WORKS FOR YOU.

A MEASURABLE WAY TO SPEND YOUR MONEY

What this actually means for example is that organizing an event for your potential clients stops being just a one off event that will hopefully bring you some business but by cleverly using digital tools and classic PR tools - a full opportunity for conversation – before, during and after the event in a way that brings you the most value for money.

We believe content marketing is efficient and fun at the same time, not to mention measurable. We have tools to measure how your audiences grow and engage with your brand in a disciplined, purposeful way: we look at website traffic and bounce rates, at social media followers and engagement, at click rates and conversion rates.

It can also mean that your website or blog posts are not dry, boring words that emptily repeat your generic keywords, but actual articulate chances to educate, delight, entertain and not forget convert your potential clients while still achieving the desired SEO effect.

CONTENT MARKETING GROWS WITH YOUR BUSINESS

WHAT IS CONTENT MARKETING?

CONTENT MARKETING HELPS YOU FIND YOUR WORDS – THE RIGHT WORDS Content marketing starts with what your clients are about and matches that with what your brand has to offer in a seamless, subtle way. And that is why with content marketing working for you, you will never struggle to find things to say on your website, social media and emails, brochures and catalogues as content marketing can be the backbone of all communication, centered around your unique selling points but dressed for your potential clients to enjoy and engage with.

Last but not least, content marketing has the benefit of being scalable – so we can start small by creating conversations on one social media channel, or growing your website audience and scale up with your business needs.

Do you need help managing understanding and creating a content marketing strategy? Contact Karen at KST Marketing to find out more about our marketing packages.

Tips to avoid tooth loss. by TILLICOULTRY DENTAL CARE Your teeth are also one of the first things others notice. Healthy and functional teeth are important as they allow us to eat the foods we want, smile and speak to others with comfort and confidence. Thankfully the most common tooth problems can be prevented. Decay can be reduced by brushing twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, spitting out excess toothpaste but not rinsing afterwards. Reducing the amount of sugar consumed, especially the number of times sugar is taken in a day will also help. Also watch out for "hidden" sugars in your foods. Gum disease can be prevented with good brushing habits, including cleaning between your teeth. Regular hygienist visits are also important, you will be coached on your brushing techniques, and any long-standing plaque and tartar deposits removed.

Smoking increases the risk of gum disease. Stopping smoking, or cutting down, well help. Regular dental visits, normally every 6 months, help prevent problems through early detection. The Dentist will screen your mouth for gum disease, dental decay and oral cancer. Regular x-rays may also be taken to help catch problems early. We can help prevent tooth loss from trauma with well fitting mouth guards. Professionally made these work very well for a variety of contact sports. What happens if I lose a tooth? Fortunately, there are good treatments available. The most modern approach uses dental implants to replace teeth and return function and appearance to the mouth. It is also possible, in many situations, to have bridgework or dentures to replace one or more teeth as an alternative.

Improve your quality of life

Our teeth help us to live life to the full and to enjoy a diverse range of foods, speak and laugh with confidence and have an excellent quality of life. Teeth can be lost for many reasons including gum disease, tooth decay and accidents.

Dental Implants

A long-lasting solution to missing teeth Success rates of over 96% Successfully used in dentistry for decades Can be used to secure dentures Give you back function for chewing

However there is no reason why you should live without your teeth, as dental implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth.

Local Walk: Dollar to Tillicoultry on the Devon Way Route by www.walkhighlands.co.uk This popular section of the Devon Way runs along an old railway line and has good views of the Ochils, and the River Devon. Popular with families, cyclists and dog walkers, it can be done with baby buggies and it is possible to return by bus. DISTANCE: 5km / 3.25 miles

TIME: 1.25 hours

STAGE 1: From the centre of Dollar follow the Dollar Burn downstream. It doesn't matter which side of the water you choose but if on the east side, turn right over a pedestrian bridge just before the primary school and then turn left to continue down the street. At the end turn right along a short street which reaches Strathdevon Place, cross this to head downsteps onto the Devon Way. Head to the right along the old railway platform and then follow the level cyclepath as it leaves Dollar. STAGE 2: Continue passing under two bridges and through woodland. Soon the Devon Way reaches a short section of minor road, continue straight ahead here and after the next junction head up the rise to continue on the dedicated path/cycleway. The land to the left is being managed as flood plain for the River Devon as part of a flood prevention scheme which aims to use a more natural approach to this age old problem. STAGE 3: For a short section the path runs alongside the River Devon and there are also good views of the Ochils on the right, with King's Seat prominent from this point. The walled enclosure full of trees on the right is Tait's tomb. It is the burial place of John Tait, an Edinburgh lawyer who owned nearby Harviestoun Castle (now demolished) as a country house and who died in 1800. The old railway line passes through a small cutting and under a bridge and passes a couple of seats and a picnic bench when the river draws near again. Soon the outskirts of Tillicoultry are reached, with the large white Sterling furniture factory visible on the left. At the main road turn right to reach the High Street.

LOVE THINGS TO DO

All about our cover photo: Tullibody Auld Brig by Chris Calder—Chairperson Tullibody History Group & Heritage Centre The exact date of the building of this ancient bridge is unknown, but it is attributed to Robert Spittal, tailor to Margaret, Queen to James 1V, about the year 1535. It has no heraldic device or inscription on it (unlike its counterpart on Banchory Brae, Tullibody, which has the Abercromby coat of arms attached). It has over the centuries provided a public thoroughfare. We do know of its existence in the year 1559 when the French troops of the Queen Regent, Mary of Guise, spotted the English fleet sailing down the Forth. In trying to make a hasty retreat from Fife, they were stopped in their tracks at Tullibody Bridge. William Kirkaldy of Grange, a military commander in the Scottish army blew up the eastern span of the bridge in an effort to impede the French retreat to Leith, and eventually back to France. Not to be outdone, the French took the roof off the Tullibody Auld Kirk and repaired the damaged bridge, affording them the escape that they sought. John Knox, the reformer makes comment on it at that time. The next mention that seems to be available is extracts from the Stirling Archives, indicating that Thomas Bauchop, mason of Alloa, is instrumental in repairing the said bridge. This takes place in 1600, 1665 and then again in 1697. John, Earl of Mar and a Thomas Bauchop have an agreement to repair the bridge by constructing a new arch and pier. The tolls to be collected by the latter, until such time he has been paid “a hundred and nynteen pundis” as payment for his work.

© Eric Begb

ie

Little is known about the history of the bridge since that time, but it obviously was the only crossing over the river Devon, until Alexander Abercromby built the other bridge on the road to Menstrie in the 17th century. Mention is made in the 20th century of small repair works being carried out but the bridge seems to have fallen out of use, possibly when the iron bridge was built in the 1900s alongside. By 2001 the Auld brig was overgrown with vegetation and impassable, but in 2003 it was all cleared, and work was carried out to restore it to a pedestrian and cycle pathway. It is now used frequently, although we see some repair work is required once again. www.tullibody historygroup.com

Twinning Towns

Twin towns or sister cities are a form of legal or social agreement between towns, cities, counties, oblasts, prefectures, provinces, regions, states, and even countries in geographically and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties. The modern concept of town twinning, conceived after the Second World War in 1947, was intended to foster friendship and understanding between different cultures and between former foes as an act of peace and reconciliation, and to encourage trade and tourism. In recent times, town twinning has increasingly been used to form strategic international business links between member cities. Clackmannanshire Council have been twinned with Vendargues in the Languedoc Rousillon region of Southern France and Espartinas in the Andalucian region of southern Spain since 2007.

Dollar and La Ville aux Dames, France Last August a party of twenty two from both Dollar and other Hillfoots towns travelled to La Ville aux Dames, France on the outskirts of Tours, to celebrate the thirty fifth anniversary of their twinning. Hosted by local families, the visitors were treated to a number of outings and events, (including a theme park with nineteen attractions; a picnic near the shore of the Loire and a river cruise) the highlight of which was the inauguration of a British telephone box which the LVAD twinning committee had bought and which now stands in the town's main park.

Those who would like to get involved in twinning, either to use their French language (not essential) or enjoy mutual friendship with genuinely warm people, should contact Anne Reynolds (Chair) on 01259 742087 or Mike Walsh (Secretary) on 01259 742748. Furthermore, if you're able to provide accommodation between 29 July and 5 August however limited, then both the above would be delighted to hear from you.

Top Tips on Buying Carpets You don’t buy a carpet everyday, but you do walk on it everyday, so it is worth ensuring you buy something that is right for you. Here are our top tips to make that all important decision easier for you. WOOL OR SYNTHETIC CARPET? Carpets will be made from wool or synthetic fibres, or a combination of the two. Wool is the most expensive option, a high quality wool carpet will be soft, retain its pile well and will last longer than alternatives. More affordable than wool, are man-made fibres including polyester, acrylic and polypropylene which are durable and highly stain-resistant – a good choice for kids' bedrooms. THINK ABOUT A ROOM'S FOOTFALL When choosing a carpet, think about how much footfall that area will have. A bedroom carpet, for example will have far less wear and tear than a stair carpet, which will need a much heavier duty carpet. WHAT IS THE CARPET PILE? The pile simply describes the style of carpet. Long pile carpets like Shag and Saxony have a wonderfully soft, luxurious feel underfoot, while carpets with shorter pile, such as twist and loop, tend to wear better and are easier to care for.

to prolong the life of your carpet, but also increase sound and heat insulation and can help to reduce energy costs LATEST CARPET TRENDS Keeping to one colour of carpet throughout a home will create a harmonious, streamlined look and make rooms look bigger. Patterned carpets make a design statement and create interest in featureless rooms (patterns are also great for disguising stains.) Recently, striped carpets have been very popular to perk up hallways and staircases.

Chim-chim-cheree by DEBBIE SINGH-BHATTI

The term ‘Chimney sweep’ may conjure up images of small, Dickensian type characters covered in soot, scrambling up enormous chimneys, and we might ask ourselves if there is really a need for this ancient trade in today’s modern world with its gas fires and centrally heated properties. Well, the short answer to that is ‘Yes!’ Even chimneys serving gas fires need cleaning on a regular basis – and if you are one of the growing number of householders returning to the cosy, romantic comfort of a traditional coal or log fire, it is essential that you spend a little time and money ensuring that your fireplace is functioning both safely and efficiently. As a fire burns, it releases numerous gases up the chimney which escape into the atmosphere. As they pass through the chimney, soot - which contains a flammable substance called creosote begins to accumulate on the walls. Over time, these deposits can begin to obstruct and eventually completely block the chimney, which could lead to an inefficient and potentially unsafe fireplace and the risk of chimney fires. This is why regular cleaning of a chimney is essential. Although it is possible to clean the chimney yourself, you might prefer instead to hire a professional chimney sweep to do this tiring, messy job! In addition to cleaning the chimney, he or she will check for other problems which might lead

to chimney fires or inefficient burning, and will also inspect your chimney for potential problems from the roof. A chimney that serves an open fire should be swept at least once a year, after a period of prolonged disuse (for example at the end of the summer) , and also at the end of the heating season to ensure that it is clear of animal nests and is prepared for the idle period. Chimneys that are used frequently may need cleaning more often, whilst those serving gas fires less often. A visit to the National Association of Chimney Sweeps or Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps websites will help you locate a local, reliable chimney sweep. These two organisations have worked together over recent years to introduce a National Code of Practice for Chimney Sweeps, designed to protect the public from untrained or poorly trained sweeps. Sweeps meeting the Standard are required to issue an Industry Standard certificate (the Standard being printed on the reverse) and where necessary, an Industry Standard Warning Notice and Label. A sweep typically takes around 45 minutes and costs around £40 per chimney, though this can vary according to location and the difficulty of the job. Before employing anyone to carry out the work, please check that they have full public liability insurance.

Garden View: Take a Seat by RACHAEL LEVERTON This year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all. My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing

46 | LOVELOCAL

maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. If finances allow you can buy beautiful teak wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from longlasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, resistant, easy-care synthetic fibres, which absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

AHC Tools Recommended Tools of the month. New to our hire fleet, is the new ELIET MAJOR 4S wood chipper/shredder. This chipper is an appreciated tool by both the demanding private garden lover and the professional. This chipper is compact and light, which allows it to access the wood even when having to go through the smallest of rear gates. The wide feed in opening offers great comfort when introducing tick branches with lots of twigs attached measuring up to 55 mm.

Altrad Belle FC4000E Vibrating Plate. Heavyweight professional compaction plates with low HAV and very high performance compaction. Designed with a shorter baseplate to offer improved compaction, manoeuvrability and finish. Ideal for compacting sand, hardcore or gravel. 40cm wide with fold down handles make it easy to transport.
