GAME NOTES
STEW KID ON THE BLOCK: Sal Stewart, the third-ranked prospect in the Reds system, made his Triple-A debut this weekend after leading Double-A Chattanooga to a first half Southern League title. After singling in his first Louisville at bat on Friday, Stewart smashed his first Bats home run off Jose Ureña in his third at bat on Sunday. The homer exploded off Stewart's bat at 104.1 mph, traveling 416 feet to center field to get Louisville on the board against St. Paul. Stewart emphatically rounded the bases, pumping his fist and pounding his chest as he pumped himself up with his milestone blast. The 21-year-old infielder went 3-for-13 in his first weekend at Triple-A, while his partner in crime, fellow top prospect Hector Rodriguez, also made his debut on Friday and recorded three hits in his first three games.
GETTING IT DUNN: Over the past month, Bats outfielder Blake Dunn has found his groove. The 26-year-old from Michigan began this season on the Reds' Opening Day roster and struggled, batting just .150 over 30 games before being optioned to the Bats on 5/9. He struggled after being sent down, batting just .140 over 14 May games. He vastly improved in June, hitting .246 with a home run and 10 RBI in 23 games last month. Now, he's off to a hot start to July, hitting .404 (19-47) with a .525 OBP in 15 games. Last night, Blake Dunn's 36-game on-base streak, which he rode from 6/3 to 7/20, was snapped with an 0-for-5 in a 9-4 victory over the Iowa Cubs. The streak was the longest by a Bat since Alejo Lopez rode a 42-gamer from early June to mid August, 2023. During Dunn's scorching run, he tallied 36 hits and 25 walks for a .464 on-base percentage, walloping a grand slam and four doubles along the way. Dunn doubled his average from a measly .131 to .262 through the duration of his streak, becoming more of the hitter that Louisville had hoped to see in his second season at the Triple-A level.
CHALLENGE UPDATES: For the season, the Bats have been able to use their Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenges to their advantage, especially from behind the plate. Overall, the Bats are 93-for-179 (52%) through the seasons's first 97 games. Bats catchers have been very impactful with their use of challenges. Both catchers on the Bats roster, Will Banfield and P.J. Higgins, have strong success rates so far, combining to win 75% (33-44) of their challenges. Higgins challenged the most out of anyone on the team, winning 17 of 23 challenges (74%) while Banfield is 16-21 (76%). Offensively, Banfield (4-8) and Rece Hinds (4-5) are the only hitters on the current roster with five or more challenges this season to have at least a 50% success rate. On the other end, Louisville's opponents have just a 46% success rate (88-190).
TURNIN' TWO: After leading the International League with 146 double plays in 2024, the Bats have picked up right where they left off. Louisville fielders have turned 87 double plays in 97 games across the 2025 season, leading the International League and ranked 11th in all of Minor League Baseball. Louisville has turned multiple double plays in 20 games this season and the Bats have turned at least one double play in 61 games.
DOUBLES FOR DAYS: In addition to turning two on defense, the Bats have been strong at reaching second at the plate. To date, the Bats' 181 doubles are 2nd in the International League and 7th in all of Minor League Baseball. Hector Rodriguez became the 22nd different Bat to record a double this season when he posted his first Triple-A extra-base hit in his second Louisville game on Saturday night against the Saints. Of the 26 players to take an at-bat for the Bats this season, Sal Stewart, who made his Triple-A debut on 7/18, is the only non-rehab player without a double yet. Only rehabbers Jake Fraley (7 games), Austin Hays (3 games), and Connor Joe (3 games), didn't hit a two-base hit during their stint in Louisville. Earlier this season, the Bats recorded 26 doubles over a seven-game road trip against the I-Cubs from 6/10-15, posting four or more doubles in four of those games. Louisville's season-high in doubles is seven on 4/20 at Columbus. The franchise record for doubles in a game is 11, set on 5/3/10 at Buffalo. In 2025, the Bats have recorded at least one double in 81 of 97 games and have recorded multiple doubles in 53 games, including three in Saturday night's victory over the Saints.
A QUARTER CENTURY AT HOME: Throughout the 2025 season, the Bats are celebrating the 25th season at Louisville Slugger Field. On April 12, 2000, the Louisville Riverbats (now Bats) opened their new downtown home, Louisville Slugger Field against Norfolk. That first game was an 8-5 loss to the Norfolk Tides. While in Louisville on a rehab assignment from Cincinnati, Deion Sanders would score the first run in the ballpark's history, coming around to score on an RBI single from Chris Sexton in the first inning. Before the game, Governor Paul Patton, Louisville Mayor David Armstrong, and former Mayor Jerry Abramson all threw a ceremonial first pitch. More recently, the Bats won the 1,500th regular season game in ballpark history on 5/20/25 vs. Gwinnett, with Wade Miley throwing a rain-shortened complete game shutout in the 4-0 victory. Since the opening of Louisville Slugger Field, the Bats have welcomed 12,335,056 fans through the ballpark gates in 1,521 game dates for an average of 8,110 per game.
PROSPECT RANKINGS: The Bats current roster features six of the Reds' Top 30 prospects according to MLB.com. They are infielder Sal Stewart (No. 3), starter Chase Petty (No. 5), outfielder Héctor Rodríguez (No. 11), reliever Connor Phillips (No. 15), along with hard-throwing righties Luis Mey (No. 20) and Zach Maxwell (No. 23).
