IVAN SLAMS THROUGH: With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning in Tuesday's series opener against Omaha, Bats left fielder Ivan Johnson connected on a 372-foot opposite-field grand slam to left for his fourth home run of the season, breaking the game open against former Bats reliever Ryan Hendrix and giving the Bats a 9-1 lead. The grand slam was the Bats' first of the 2025 season and their first in 197 games spanning 608 days. Before Johnson, the most recent Bat to hit a grand slam was Jason Vosler on 9/6/23 vs. St. Paul's Ronny Henriquez at Louisville Slugger Field. The Bats went all of 2024 without a grand slam, the only team in all of Triple-A and one of eight out of the 120 full-season affiliates in MiLB to not hit a grand slam last season. The 2024 season was only the second slam-less season in Louisville franchise history, with the first coming in 1993. On 6/14/94, Darrel Deak of the Louisville Redbirds broke a 651 day slam-less streak, with the previous slam coming on 9/1/92 by Lonnie Maclin. Incredibly, after Deak's slam, the Redbirds hit another grand slam the next day on 6/15/94, this time from Phil Stephenson.
WHERE THERE'S A WIL(KERSON), THERE'S A WAY: One of the pleasant surprises early in the 2025 season has been veteran starter Aaron Wilkerson. After spending most of the past three seasons between Japan and Korea, Wilkerson signed with the Reds as a free agent and started the season in the rotation. His first start was rough, allowing eight runs on 3/30 vs. Memphis. Since then, he's been solid, giving up one or fewer runs in four of his next five starts, including a 11.0 inning scoreless streak from 4/5-4/12. He pitched five solid innings on 4/26 vs. Iowa in a no-decision before tossing the longest start from a Bats pitcher this season last Thursday in Memphis, allowing just one run over seven innings to earn his third win. Wilkerson has earned three of the five wins obtained by Bats starters. The Bats are Wilkerson's sixth Triple-A team after Pawtucket (2016), Colorado Springs (2016, 2018), San Antonio (2019), Oklahoma City (2021), and Las Vegas (2023). Of those six, Pawtucket (moved to Worcester), Colorado Springs (now in Independent Pioneer League), and San Antonio (Double-A Texas League) are no longer Triple-A clubs.
DOUBLES FOR DAYS: In addition to the turning two on defense, the Bats have been strong at reaching second at the plate. To date, the Bats' 59 doubles are 4th in the International League and 14th in all of Minor League Baseball. Of the 17 players to take an at-bat for Louisville, 15 have recorded at least one double. Only Austin Hays (3 rehab games) and Jacob Hurtubise (optioned to Louisville on 4/15, recalled on 5/6) did not double. On 4/20 at Columbus, the Bats ripped seven doubles en route to a 7-4 victory, with three coming off the bat of Levi Jordan. This marks the most doubles in a game for Louisville since they had seven on 5/18/23 vs. Jacksonville, and the most by an individual Bats player this season. Francisco Urbaez challenged Jordan's mark last night, doubling twice in the win over Omaha. The Bats team record for most doubles in a game sits at 11, recorded on 5/3/10 at Buffalo. This season, the Bats have recorded at least one double in 27 of 33 games and two or more doubles in 18 of 33 games.
BATS VS. CHASERS: The Bats are hosting the defending International League Champion Omaha Storm Chasers for the first time this season. This will be the second series meeting between the teams, with Louisville splitting a six-game set in Omaha in their first road series this season at the beginning of April. Despite finishing on opposite ends of the IL standings, the Bats fared well against the Storm Chasers in 2024. The two teams evenly split 18 meetings last season 9-9, going 6-6 at Werner Park and 3-3 at Louisville Slugger Field. Several members of the Bats were especially dominant against Omaha. P.J. Higgins batted .375 (24-64) in 16 games against the Chasers. Levi Jordan batted .350 (14-40) in 11 games, Edwin Rios hit .320 (1650) in 13 games, and Davis Wendzel hit .341 (14-41) in 11 games. For their careers, Higgins and Rios are both hitting exactly .333 against Omaha in 28 and 64 games, respectively. Incredibly, the Bats lead the All-Time season series over Omaha by just two games, 164-162.
THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE: In the second inning of last Tuesday's series opener against Memphis, the Bats made history on defense to get out of a jam. With Reiver Sanmartin on the mound and runners on first and second, a line drive from Matt Lloyd was fielded by Bats shortstop Levi Jordan on a bounce. He quickly fielded and stepped on second for a force out and threw to Edwin Rios first to retire Lloyd. Rios then threw to P.J. Higgins at third, catching the lead runner in a rundown where Jordan applied the tag to complete an elusive triple-play, ending the inning. The Bats' triple play is the first in Minor League Baseball during the 2025 season and the fifth in Louisville franchise history (third as the Bats). The full list of Louisville triple plays now reads:
1. 8/2/1989 at Denver - Doubleheader Game 2
2. 7/10/1993 vs. Indianapolis
3. 7/20/2005 at Pawtucket (Ground ball, 3B Edwin Encarnacion to 2B Alex Pelaez to 1B Ricky Bell)
4. 8/25/2022 at Toledo (Line drive, 3B Spencer Steer to 1B Colin Moran)
5. 4/29/2025 at Memphis (Ground ball, SS Levi Jordan to 1B Edwin Rios to 3B P.J. Higgins to SS Levi Jordan)
TURNIN' TWO: After leading the International League with 146 double plays in 2024, the Bats are picking up right where they left off. Louisville fielders have turned 32 double plays in 33 games to open the 2025 season, leading the International League and tied for 5th in all of Minor League Baseball. The Bats have turned multiple double plays in 10 games so far and have turned at least one in 21 of 33 games.
BACK (TO BACK) AT LAST: After going 593 days without hitting back-to-back home runs, the Louisville Bats have now accomplished the feat three times in three weeks. The first instance this season was on 4/6, when Edwin Rios led of the 10th inning with a two-run homer and Rece Hinds followed with a solo blast in the eventual 7-5 win. The back-to-back home runs in Omaha were the first for Louisville since Jason Vosler and Jose Barrero accomplished the feat vs. Toledo on 8/22/23. That was a span of 593 days and 187 games between back-to-back homers for the Bats, who did not accomplish the feat in 2024. Just 13 days later on 4/19 at Columbus, the pair of Rios and Hinds did it again, but in reverse order with Hinds leading the way as the pair of solo home runs turned a deficit into a tie in a game the Bats would eventually win. The Bats then accomplished the feat at home in Sunday's series finale against the I-Cubs, with Reds rehabber Tyler Stephenson hitting his first career Triple-A home run and Will Benson following with a solo blast in the sixth to turn a 3-2 loss into a 4-3 lead in an eventual 6-4 loss.
