SERENADE / CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES The first performance of Serenade was on June 10, 1934, by students of the School of American Ballet, at Felix Warburg’s estate, White Plains, New York.

Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance.

It is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature works of New York City Ballet’s repertory. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in blue costumes in front of a blue background. Originating it as a lesson in stage technique, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the choreography. When one student fell, he incorporated it. Another day, a student arrived late, and this too became part of the ballet.

After its initial presentation, Serenade was reworked several times. In its present form there are four movements — “Sonatina,” “Waltz,” “Russian Dance,” and “Elegy.” The last two movements reverse the order of Tchaikovsky’s score, ending the ballet on a note of sadness.

Balanchine had a special affinity for Tchaikovsky.

“In everything that I did to Tchaikovsky’s music,” he told an interviewer, “I sensed his help. It wasn’t real conversation. But when I was working and saw that something was coming of it, I felt that it was Tchaikovsky who had helped me.”

CAPRICCIO ITALIANO / CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES The first challenge for creating a unique work for United State of Dance was to find the right music.

We knew that Serenade was going to be part of the program, and using another work by Tchaikovsky was a little nerve wracking, but Capriccio Italien Op. 45 was so different from Serenade for Strings that I was convinced it was the right choice.

The second challenge was to find the perfect story and create a libretto that would go along with this remarkable work. I work very well long distance with my older brother Jose Angel who lives in Mexico City, as we have for a long time. We knew that it had to be an Italian tale and found the answer in Italo Calvino’s recopilation of Italian folk tales. In this amazing recopilation, one story stood out because it fit the music perfectly: “The Salamanna Grape”.

The costumes will be created by Susan Wigglesworth, and the sets will be a combination of hard drops and projected images on the screen. The images will be colorful and somewhat abstract so that we give the opportunity to the audience to use their imagination.

We inherited some drops from The London Festival Ballet (now The English National Ballet) and together with extra legs and borders we rented from the Lexington Children’s Theater, we have created a little gem we like to call Capriccio Italiano.

MODELS / CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTES MODELS began with an introduction to the sculptor, Matt Weir made by Louisville Ballet’s Artistic Director Robert Curran. Robert invited me to create a new choreography with Matt creating a scenic element.

Matt and I had initial discussions that revolved around landscapes, music and the aesthetic links we saw between his sculptures and my choreography. For our ballet, we decided we wanted to conjure a future place, a new idyll. It would be populated by a people without the baggage of history who would, gradually, become part of this new world.

Other elements crept in as the choreography took shape. Increasingly, puppet like movements and vignettes appeared. The counterpoint between these doll-like traits and more recognizably human gestures began to engage me more and more. These people carried with them an instinct to organize, swarm and form bonds. They could be anonymous or unique, emotional or neutral. They had carried something old into the new after all.

With the idea that Matt’s creation would be suspended, mobile-like, above the dancers and the increasing impression I had of the dancers’ manoeuvres being controlled like puppets, as though from an external force, I came up with the title of MODELS. The music is a run of six consecutive tracks from the album ‘Point’ by Keigo Ayamada a.k.a Cornelius. I had been enjoying this album since its release in 2001

for its eclecticism, fun and downright grooviness. It has been a reliable spirit-lifter and one of those few albums I was always happy to let play from end to end. For this project it seemed the right fit. It utilizes samples of other music that span many decades, giving it for me a classic appeal, despite its kookiness. It also takes wildly different music genres and weaves them into a coherent whole (could you get more divergent than a Frank Sinatra cover and speed metal?). It’s also just weirdly fun and fresh, something I wanted on stage with the dancers.

The costumes pay a small nod to my days as a boy scout in Australia. They symbolize the intrepid spirit of childhood alongside the uniformity often imposed on that spirit.

The final and most important element has been the dancers. I began the work with just 8 dancers from Louisville Ballet. They made such a team. We performed an excerpt of what would become the final ballet in January 2019 and there was already such coherence in the piece that I found it hard to imagine adding new people. Then in July 2019, dancers from Lexington Ballet came into the studio and MODELS expanded in length as well as in soul. The dancers have propelled the piece into unique territory for me. As they encountered the music or choreography they each reacted in unpredictable ways. And from day one, they’ve made it their own – sometimes to the point I had to remind them that I was still there! But as a choreographer you can create a dance but not a performance. That part is all theirs.
