Hello & Welcome!

When we started putting together this issue, we knew from the beginning that it would include conversations with and introductions to remarkable women of Louisiana. How much insight we would get from women in our community is something we couldn't know - but we are delighted that the ladies who joined in the "Ask a Lady' conversation spoke their minds.

We also got to know Amy Galliano, a Louisiana entrepreneur and insurance industry leader and we had the chance to catch up with Erica Ise, an actor and Louisiana ambassador - you can find highlights from our conversations with them in the ‘Louisiana Ladies’ section.

Being a fashion and cosmetics-loving lady makes anything having to do with these topics something I want to read and learn about. My enjoyment of creation, style, and design extends to living spaces too and I hope you enjoy what is shared here.

Since I am a Lady of August, please let me be among the first to wish all our ladies with birthdays in August a very happy, healthy, and prosperous season of life! It is going to be a remarkable year!

You might notice that our self-care article, weekly giveaway announcement, and book of the month work well together - this is a happy accident and I'm taking it as a reminder to pay more attention to my own self-care this month.

What Makes a Woman Beautiful

Beauty, and all the topic encompasses, has been a fascinating topic for centuries and it is not surprising that the perception of beauty varies depending on who you ask.

This made us wonder what the women in our community would have to say if asked ‘What makes a woman beautiful,’ so we decided to find out.

When the answers began to come in, we noted that not one of the responses mentioned make-up, hair, weight, or anything that had to do with a woman’s physical appearance. Instead, we read responses that spoke of a woman’s confidence, kindness, demeanor, wisdom, and compassion.

Then we decided to dig a little deeper into some of the characteristics and attributes these ladies found to be reflections of the beauty of a woman.

Before we get there, we want to say that taking care of ourselves, using cosmetics, and choosing hairstyles and products is something we do almost every day. We do them because we enjoy them and find personal benefits from our preferred products and practices. We understand that our beauty is not limited to the image we see when we look into the mirror –but that does not mean we cannot enjoy the results of discovering and trying ‘beauty’ products and services available to us.

Ladies in our community are great about sharing their thoughts and opinions, and their responses indicated they admire and appreciate characteristics and traits that reflect the beauty of a person, including:

Confidence and Self-Acceptance

We believe confidence and self-acceptance are two of the most captivating and powerful characteristics a woman can have. When you meet a confident woman, a woman who really accepts herself, you are in the company of a person who has learned from life experiences. She is a woman who chose to grow through difficult times, and she has spent time with and on herself.

These ladies know being confident has nothing to do with arrogance or seniority and much to do with understanding their worth. She knows she is empowered when she embraces her imperfections and acknowledges her uniqueness.

Kindness and Compassion

Having the ability to empathize with others, show compassion, and offer a helping hand is one of the ways a woman can show warmth and positivity.

Some say true beauty lies in lifting others up and nurturing relationships. It is likely you know many women who fit this description.

Kindness and compassion are qualities that come from having a genuine connection and concern for others. Women with these qualities are women to respect and value. It is likely that these women have many life experiences that have given them an understanding of what others are going through. You are a lucky person if you have a kind and compassionate woman you can talk to as you sort through life challenges and choices.

Curiosity and Intelligence

Does a woman’s beauty extend to her mind and soul? We think so! Intellectual curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, and a desire to grow and learn are all traits that add to the ability and spirit of a woman.

Having a thirst for knowledge and a love for learning demonstrate an active and engaged mind. When you are pursuing opportunities to expand your horizons, challenge your beliefs, and engage in meaningful conversations you are experiencing the beauty of personal growth.

An emotionally intelligence woman understands and manages her emotions, a strength that allows her to create deeper connections and enjoy harmony in her relationships.

Strength and Resilience

Women who have faced and overcome personal challenges have a special kind of beauty that can only be earned. Having the strength to make it through, and even rise above, in challenging times is a prime example of her inner beauty.

Learning, growing, and thriving in the face of obstacles and challenges in life may mean she carries scars, many of which you cannot see, these are reminders of her strength and resilience.

It is through struggles and hardships that a woman's true strength is revealed, and her ability to endure and adapt contributes to her beauty.

Passion and Ambition

Beautiful is the woman who pursues her passions and dreams! Ambition, coupled with a drive to make a positive change for herself and those she cares for, elevates a woman's beauty to a higher space. When she is enthusiastic about her pursuits her enthusiasm can become contagious and inspire others to follow their dreams as well.

Sense of Humor and Playfulness

A woman who can laugh at herself and find humor in everyday situations lightens the atmosphere and mood for her and those nearby. A genuine laugh is not only a stress reliever, but also a reflection of her ability to find joy in the little things and that is beautiful!

Embracing and celebrating all the elements that make a woman beautiful is important. When we do this, we empower women to embrace their individuality and to recognize and appreciate their inner beauty.

Counting on professionals who can provide us with the information we need to make decisions is something we do every day. This is especially true when it comes to finances, insurance, and planning for the future.

So, when we had the opportunity to ask Amy Galliano a few questions we wasted no time in putting together a handful of questions for this respected industry professional. We’re sharing our questions and her answers with you below.

Louisiana Ladies - Hi Amy, thank you for joining us today. Please take a moment to introduce yourself and let our readers know what area of Louisiana you’re in and what you do.

Amy Galliano – Thank you so much for this opportunity to speak with your readers. I really enjoy your magazine and social media posts.

I live in New Orleans but work with clients in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. I provide individuals, families, and small business owners with guidance on their health, life, and disability insurance needs.

Louisiana Ladies - You’ve been in the health insurance industry for more than a decade, why did you choose this industry and how have you grown professionally?

Amy Galliano – It has definitely changed over the last 15 years. When I started, we still had paper applications and long processing times. Today, most all of the applications are online. I would say my technical skills have improved as a result. Social media was fairly new at that time as well. Now it is a major part of marketing efforts and informational campaigns.

I have lots of insurance brokers in my family so I have been exposed to this industry for most of my life. My first professional mentors were family members.

Louisiana Ladies – Being in insurance for so many years means you’ve helped a lot of people find answers and solutions. Are there common questions you get when working with a person for the first time?

Amy Galliano – I would say the most common question is- “I do not know where to start.” Most clients are feeling overwhelmed and confused about their options once we speak initially. I like to reassure them that I work with clients in their position all the time and we will figure it out together. Sometimes just knowing that they have me to ask questions about their next step is a stress relief.

Louisiana Ladies – When it comes to insurance, and financial services in general, working with an insurance agent can feel somewhat transactional. Like we’re just another sale. Is there anything you do to make sure your clients don’t feel this way?

Amy Galliano – If I saw every client as just a transaction, I am not sure I would still be in this industry all these years later. Establishing relationships with my clients is one of the best aspects of my career.

After years with the same client, I really get to know them beyond their insurance needs. Clients call me with all kinds of questions not always insurance-related.

If I can serve as a resource, I feel like I have done a good job. It is also how I managed to build a business that is referral based rather than running lots of advertising and having to rely on leads.

Louisiana Ladies – Our next question comes from something you shared in one of our conversations. You said, “Life insurance is more than just financial – it’s really love insurance”, and that really hit home. Can you expand on that?

Amy Galliano – It really is. I wish more people understood this. So many people hear life insurance and automatically think their beneficiary is going to jet off to some island and be on permanent vacation. That is not the purpose of life insurance.

I use myself as an example. If something happened to me, I would not want my husband or children’s lives to change at all. I want them to continue to live in our house, attend the same schools, participate in all their activities, and continue with their dreams.

With my life insurance proceeds, their lives do not have to change. They can concentrate on grieving me (hopefully) and figuring out life without me. Their worry does not need to be how the bills are going to be paid.

It is comforting to know that even without me around- their lives can flourish. Now who will wash the dishes without me around is another concern.

Louisiana Ladies – We’ve been seeing information about ‘Medicaid Unwinding’ in the news and this has really been a hot topic lately with the Louisiana Department of Health. Do you have any insights you can share about this? What should we know if we received Medicaid during the pandemic?

Amy Galliano – Yes- thank you for asking about this. The unwinding began earlier this year and is a major concern.

When clients ask about this, my recommendation is to make sure that the Medicaid portal has accurate and updated contact information for them and to respond to any inquiries in a timely manner. Medicaid generally sends a letter about their coverage renewal so having the correct contact information is very important.

It is not unusual for a client to learn that they have lost their benefits while at the doctor’s office or trying to fill a prescription. I have had clients call me in tears after bringing their sick child to the pediatrician to learn that they do not have any coverage. I hate for that to happen to anyone.

If a reader has lost their Medicaid coverage, they can contact me anytime. I am happy to walk them through their next steps.

Louisiana Ladies – Personally speaking, what would you say has been the most rewarding and most challenging thing about being a woman in business?

Amy Galliano – When I hear the relief in their voice after the application is submitted and processed, that is enough for me. One of the best compliments that a client can say to me is- “you made this so much simpler for me.” That is all that I need to hear.

I suspect the challenges are similar to any other small business owner. The balance between communicating with clients and vendors, marketing strategies and just keeping business moving along is not always easy.

I find having a good calendar and task system really helps. A strong cup of coffee in the morning doesn’t hurt either.

Louisiana Ladies – And our last question, what are three things can you share with women who may be considering a career in the insurance industry?

Amy Galliano – I love this question.

Listen to the client. Know their areas of concern.

Be respectful of your clients’ time and information. Be on time for calls and meetings and keep their information secure.

Stay organized- establish a record-keeping system and stick with it. It will become second nature in time.

LOUISIANA ACTOR & AMBASSADOR

Erica Ise is a Louisiana actor with roles in the historical action thriller film, Emancipation, and the supernatural comedy film We Have a Ghost. She is also a Louisiana ambassador we had the opportunity to interview earlier this year. Today we're catching up with Erica to learn what's happening with her and the acting industry.

Louisiana Ladies - Hi Erica, thank you for joining us and letting us catch up! What's new for you in acting?

Erica Ise - What’s new for me is what’s happening for everyone. There’s going to be a big shift for actors and every job associated with the film industry since the newly announced strike by SAG-AFTRA.

It’s been a soul-searching year so far for me and for where I can use my acting talents and skills.

The number of acting jobs have been reduced, but it hasn’t stopped me from preparing for that next audition and role.

Louisiana Ladies - How are you preparing for new roles and how can others?

Erica Ise - The key word is practice, but I’m not looking for perfection. I’m practicing to improve my skill, enjoy the process and my performance.

Others can practice by doing readings with other actors, by taking classes, etc.

There are many local places that offer classes and that type of camaraderie may just be what’s needed right now.

Louisiana Ladies - I hear you have a birthday this month. Are you doing anything special?

Erica Ise - Birthdays are pretty special to me. I consider them the start of a new year for me.

As far as celebrating, I tend to do many things throughout the month to celebrate with family and friends.

I’m a busy mom as well so I’m not able to see everyone often. My birthday month gives me that opportunity.

Louisiana Ladies - What challenges do you face as a mother and a working actor?

Erica Ise - Probably the same challenges that most parents have who work. Acting hours, however, can be longer and not as consistent at times, which can be frustrating for the family.

Happily though, I have a daughter who enjoys acting as well and understands the demands. She’s a big supporter of me living my acting dream and I sometimes rehearse with her. The acting bug is in the family.

Louisiana Ladies - We love that acting is a family thing! Thanks for updating us about your acting and telling us a little more about you. Any final thoughts?

Erica Ise - Yes, Thank you for being a promoter of Louisiana as I am, and with all the changes happening in the film industry, here in Louisiana and around the US, I say to my fellow actors, stay strong through this shift in the industry.

Summer Workwear for Women

Summer in Louisiana means we can count on heat and humidity being at their peak and the need for cool and comfortable summer workwear for women. We can also count on having summer-like weather well after the end of August.

Fortunately, women wanting style and comfort in their workday attire have plenty of options to choose from. Selecting the right fabrics will ensure you stay comfortable during warm weather and having a variety of styles and materials to choose from can expand your styling options. Keep these tips and ideas in mind when selecting summer clothing and accessories.

Select Breathable Fabrics

If you want your summer workwear to be cool and comfortable you will need to select breathable fabrics. While natural fibers are excellent choices that allow air to circulate and wick moisture away from your body, fabric blends can expand your style choices since they have many benefits of their own.

Cotton is a natural fiber and an excellent choice in humid climates like ours because it makes the heat more tolerable. Cotton can, and in our experience does, shrink in the clothes dryer – so consider letting your cotton shirts, pants, and skirts hang dry to minimize shrinkage.

Linen is another natural fiber to consider since it has a light weave that allows for more air to circulate. Linen is known to have a lived-in kind of beauty that might take some time to get comfortable with if you enjoy a wrinkle-free look.

Chambray, which is made of cotton or linen, has a high thread count and a finer weave making it another fabric option to consider when you are looking to stay cool in a humid climate. Shirts with a soft-denim look are often made of Chambray, a popular alternative for someone wanting a denim look without the weight.

Blends are synthetic fabrics that are known for removing moisture (like athletic wear), which makes them another smart choice for our humid climate. Blends are machine washable and dryable, do not shrink, and require no ironing - which makes them a versatile and lowmaintenance choice.

Dresses & Skirts

Dresses and skirts are a great option for summer workwear, as they allow air to circulate freely. Look for knee-length or midi dresses in light fabrics. A-line dresses are flattering and provide a comfortable fit. Pair them with a light cardigan or an unlined blazer for a polished look.

Wide-Leg Pants

Wide-leg pants are trendy and a wonderful choice for summer workwear. Select pants in breathable fabrics and pair them with a lightweight blouse or a sleeveless top for a modern and comfortable ensemble that is comfortable and professional.

Select Light Colors

According to an article in sciencing.com, the adage that dark colors absorb more heat is true. This is not the best news for those of us who have built a wardrobe with dark colors as our primary style aesthetic.

That does not mean we have to forsake our favorite foundation color, but we do need to consider the fabrics we are choosing and consider the placement of darker colors.

Dark pants and skirts are still a workable summer wardrobe option, and they pair well with light-colored tops that are suitable for the workday.

In general, selecting light-colored clothing such as pastels or neutrals which reflect sunlight may help keep you cool.

Sleeve Options

While short-sleeved tops are rarely taboo in the workplace, some of the sleeveless options might be frowned upon. If your workplace allows it, summertime is a suitable time to add sleeveless options to your work wardrobe.

Stick with sleeveless tops and dresses that have a modest cut and appropriate length to keep it professional.

Shoes

If there is ever a time to choose comfort over style it is when you are selecting shoes, especially in the summer. Fortunately, there is no shortage of color, comfort, or style options to choose from.

If trying your new shoes on before making a purchase is a personal must, we recommend visiting a local boutique where you may find a higher level of personalized service.

Looking for a wide variety to choose from? Local department stores have plenty of options for you to try. If you have already found a favorite shoe and want to order it in more colors an online search is a good place to start.

Jewelry

What do you do on the days when it just feels too hot to wear a lot of jewelry and accessories? You skip it! Jewelry and accessory trends are only enjoyable if you are comfortable wearing them so if you need to pass on jewelry for a day or two you go right ahead.

If you still want to accessorize but you are not into stacks, bulky necklaces, and bracelets consider a statement piece.

Oversized pendants, cameo, and other eye-catching accents are on trend, and they are a clever way for you to show your sense of style and establish your look of the day.

Remember, we have a few more months before the weather really starts to cool down here in Louisiana, so it is not too late to discover or create stylish workappropriate outfits you will enjoy wearing.

I read this quote and the words ‘fulfillment of their nature’ stood out to me. What does that mean? I pondered the question, wondering if our ideas, the things we pursue, and the things we’re passionate about are a part of our journey to the fulfillment of our nature.

For me, the answer is yes, because part of our nature, our being, is to have natural talents and curiosity about topics that pique our interest. These can range from artistic pursuits like acting, singing, and music, and even fall somewhere in the world of science, business, or sports. Pursuing interests, improving skills, and learning to have a better understanding of any topic are all steps toward personal growth and intellectual self-care.

Does that mean you shouldn't pursue an interest in something you don’t have a natural affinity for? Not at all! You should remember and recognize the potential within yourself to cultivate new skills and pursue studies, projects, and hobbies that challenge us in new ways. Expanding your knowledge and areas of interest can be an important part of your intellectual self-care process.

For example, if I don't enjoy cooking but decide to learn more about a particular type of cuisine or method of cooking I'm allowing myself to learn something new and I might even find a new hobby to enjoy. Is it likely that the things I learn will have some level of interest to me? Absolutely.

Could it be that I still don't enjoy cooking even after I've spent time learning about cooking methods and styles? Again, absolutely!

Having the knowledge and ability to do something doesn't mean you will enjoy it. Sometimes, intellectual growth happens within the journey, despite the result, and you've learned something new along the way.

Take a class on a topic that interests you.

Watch a how-to video to learn how to cook something new.

Choose a musical instrument and learn to play.

Write a short story.

Do a crossword puzzle.

Contribute to a community project.

Watch a documentary about sharks.

Learn about the history of the town you live in.
